No Chain. No Gimmicks. They are an authentic ChicagoStyle deli and pub, with Chicago comfort food and great craft beers and wines.
“Fat Dan’s has a menu full of popular items, but if you haven’t been here before I would suggest the Dirty Tots, Smoked Wings, Smoked Brisket, Smoked Meatloaf (Wednesday Only), Hand-cut Fries, and, of course, a Chicago Dog,” Segerson says. “You will not be disappointed whichever direction you choose to go.” Segerson’s favorite food at Fat Dan’s is a full
meal, rather than just one single menu item. “Start with the Smoked Wings and Dirty Tots, move to the Italian Beef extra wet with fries, and finish it with a bottled Coca-Cola,” she says. Fat Dan’s is also serving a variety of burgers, hot dogs, deli sandwiches and smoked meats.
Some time down the road, Segerson says Fat Dan’s will eventually be appearing at community activities. “Right now we’re just trying to open our doors to satisfy the people of Carmel,” she says. “As we get more acclimated with the events around town you’ll see us popping up at local events.” Segerson believes Far Dan’s has increased in popularity at all three of its locations. “In my opinion, I think Fat Dan’s brings people together,” Segerson says. “Families, friends, sports fans and strangers, all get to come in and leave their worries on the doorstep. We’re strong in our community and believe that our number one job is to make you feel like you’re coming home every time you walk through our doors. It should feel like you’re in your basement or hanging out with your buddies or your kids just enjoying life. I think we’ve done a
pretty good job of making that happen.” Segerson says that all of their locations are different in their own way. “Our Carmel location will be just the same way,” she says. “In addition to the full Fat Dan’s menu, we will be incorporating things from the pizza oven. Paint It! Kids Brings Color to Life
Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photography Provided
Architect turned artist Kate Jones has created a colorful job for herself in the community with Paint It! Kids. Jones has taken a talent and turned it into a business that doesn’t feel like work but more like a chance to live out her passion. “It’s not a job to me,” she says. “I’m playing around. I still can’t believe it. I’m just having fun. I’ve been very lucky that this
opportunity fell in my lap like it did.” Jones instructs kids and adults in the art of painting both in her studio and out in the community.
Background In Architecture Jones has always been interested in art. At Carmel High School, she discovered architecture, taking all the CAD, architecture and design classes she could. 10 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atCarmel.com
She went on to have a successful career as an architectural designer in Chicago before she quit her job to raise a family. Ten years and four children later, her father William Smock decided some time out of the house would benefit her. Smock is an accomplished artist himself. While completing two tours of duty in Iraq, he created military art to help pass the time. CNN picked up on his story, and today one of his paintings hangs in the White House. He also taught art in IPS for almost 40 years.
Make a Deal
Paint It! KIDS owner Kate Jones with her family: Karina, Nadia, Travis, Eli & Nolan Jones
Smock made a deal with Jones: he would pay for her to get her master’s in art at the University of Indianapolis if she would commit to taking the program with him. Jones agreed, applied to the program in 2009, and was accepted. She credits her dad with keeping her focused. In 2012 when her youngest started kindergarten, Jones realized she didn’t know what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. She had been mom for 10 years. She had her master’s degree. She didn’t want to go back to architecture. Who was she? While Jones absolutely loved art, she didn’t yet see how it could be a career. One phone call in 2012 changed that. A friend called and asked her to lead a painting party she was hosting. Jones eagerly accepted and posted about the experience on Facebook. Not too long after that another friend whose family owns Heartland Hall Child Development Center in Carmel called and asked her to come in one day a week to teach preschool art. A business was born. Soon other schools started calling.
“I didn’t mean to start this. It really just kind of fell into my lap, and it was exactly what I needed at that time because I didn’t know what I wanted to do.” - Kate Jones -
“I didn’t mean to start this,” Jones says. “It really just kind of fell into my lap, and it was exactly what I needed at that time because I didn’t know what I wanted to do.”
Move to Acreage In 2014 Jones and her husband bought an old home in need of repairs on 2.5 acres in Zionsville. The original log cabin of the home was built in the 1830s and the barn is pre-Civil war era as well. Jones wasn’t exactly sure about undertaking such a job until she saw what was in the lower level: an art studio. That clinched the deal. Paint It! Kids is based out of that art studio and Jones has developed a thriving, mobile multi-faceted business that includes the following: atCarmel.com / JUNE 2018 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 11
BUILDING WEALTH. One personalized portfolio at a time.
• Birthday painting parties • Studio classes • S chool enrichment activities for the Carmel, Westfield, and Zionsville school systems • Summer camps • Artist in residence program • Public events • Adult corporate events and fundraisers
Art Is for Anyone Jones’ encouraging can-do style makes art possible for even those who don’t feel they have a shred of artistic talent. She chooses projects that lead to success. “Anyone can do this,” she says. “Everything can be broken down into simple shapes. Once you do it step by step and your eyes start seeing those shapes and how they work together, nothing is hard.”
High client satisfaction = over 90% client retention.
Thanks to her dad, Jones can demonstrate the process of art come full circle to her budding artists. Smock kept all of her childhood artwork, so when her students get frustrated with a project, she’ll whip out one of her own preschool drawings and set it next to a current painting of hers. “This and this were painted by the same artist,” she’ll say. “What do you think happened between here and here? And they’ll say, ‘Lots of practice.’”

Knocking on doors trying to get anyone to take a chance on his business took a while, but once he did, he was able to build one of only a few jewelers that had a full-time staff dedicated to creating custom jewelry, working on repairs and creating custom molds. Once his wholesale business was developed, he took the next step of opening up a retail store in 1998. Achieving his dream of creating a successful jewelry business over a 20-year period is what gave him the ability to recognize the hard work, vision and effort that Mann was doing to fulfill her dream. The partnership was formed and along

The social media contest will result in one lucky winner receiving a $500 shopping spree at Master Jewelers. The contest was announced on Facebook and is also on Instagram and Twitter. Mann has selected seven different pieces of jewelry that she will be wearing throughout May. All that the public needs to do is “catch” Pippa wearing jewelry in the month of May and snap a photo. These pictures or videos can come from any media outlet, including news, websites and Pippa’s social media networks. The only catch is that the picture or video must have been posted or published in the month of May. Most important, the entries must include the hashtag #SpottingPippasPicks to be eligible. In addition to providing beautiful jewelry to one of the most widely recognized female race car drivers in the world, Master Jewelers is also dedicated to offering beautiful jewelry, custom and designer, along with modifying any custom jewelry that you already own. CARMEL WELDING CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
In an age of big box stores and online shopping, one Carmel business has stood the test of time. Bill Wiggam was only seven years old when his father, F. Keith Wiggam, started Carmel Welding in the small farming community. Today, the family-owned company is celebrating its 70th anniversary as the oldest business in Carmel. “It is fantastic to celebrate 70 years,” says coowner Bill Wiggam. “Being in business this long is pretty hard to come by nowadays. I know when my dad started this, I don’t know that he assumed it would still be here 70 years later. It means a ton to me, and to have my son involved in it, a third generation, is great.”
“There are generations of people now that have been coming in to see us,” adds Bill Jr. “I don’t ever want to take that for granted. It is an amazing feeling when you see those people come in and talk about the way it was when they first started coming to us.” Bill Jr. grew up around the family business and says it was always something that was familiar to him. An interest in the community side with regular customers as well as a passion for the outdoor, lawn and power equipment part of the industry kept him involved. Today, he co-owns the business with his father.
South Rangeline Road in the same building, albeit with some changes and expansion. When Carmel Welding first opened in 1948, South Rangeline Road was a simple, two-lane gravel road, far from the five-lane main road that now runs through the city.
“With everything going on around us and changes throughout the city, we are still here, which is pretty unique,” Bill Jr. says. “Now, we are showing our age a little with the newer buildings around us, but it has been great to be a part of Carmel’s growth as a city. We are right in the heart of it. There are many people coming into town and a lot of opportunity for us with projects and our The store still stands at its original location on business to gain new customers.” 22 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atCarmel.com
As the industry evolved and big box stores popped up over the years, Carmel Welding has also shifted and adapted. Long gone are the days of being a general blacksmith shop. Today, the store has evolved into a supply company as well. The welding side remains its bread and butter as Carmel Welding offers full repair services on just about anything that is made of metal from farming, lawn and construction equipment to everyday household items like lawn or patio furniture.
or need a specific part, Carmel Welding can do it. Over the years, the company has been asked to repair or complete some interesting projects. “One of the most recent ones we did was a rework of the Lombardi Trophy,” Bill Jr. says. “Now, I don’t think it was an original one. It was a replica that looked just like it. Several years ago we did work on the Colts Fanbulance. It was an old ambulance that the guys converted into a Colts tailgate. We built a collapsible goal post for them, which was a lot of fun.
More than that, Carmel Welding & Supply Co. has dove head first into the lawn and landscaping industry as a multi-line dealer of brands like Toro, STIHL, Grasshopper and more. If you have a lawnmower problem “We’ve even had some special projects

with the Indiana Office of Defense making specialized parts for tanks,” he adds. “Now, that probably wasn’t top secret or anything, but we still had to follow some pretty strict guidelines.” Staying in business for 70 years obviously doesn’t come without hard work and dedication. The key for Carmel Welding, much like any other successful business, has been great customer service and employees. Their team, the Wiggams say, is what sets them apart. “We have surrounded ourselves with the best people and do the best we can with our work and that is why customers continue to come,” Bill says.
“We don’t have much turnover with the team that we have working here,” Bill Jr. adds. “We look for customer-service oriented people. We also spend a lot of resources each year on training our guys. Our team appreciates the small business feel, too. They’ve got a voice and they are empowered with making decisions. Each one of our guys has a following of people, customers that come in and ask for them specifically for a project.” As the weather starts warming up for summer, Carmel Welding hits its busiest season with customers flocking in for lawn mower parts and repairs, patio furniture repairs and more. Looking back over seven decades in business brings a sense of pride for Bill and Bill Jr. and its something they certainly do not take for granted. “Throughout my life, I’ve seen many businesses come and go, so to be around

this long makes me proud,” Bill says. “I’m proud to be here this long and service the Carmel community and also to have been able to put my daughter and son through school because of this. My son being a part of this with me is a great feeling as well.” “When I was younger I’m not sure I really appreciated how involved our business is in the community,” Bill Jr. says. “But having daughters of my own who now see and hear about the business and us being a part of the

community for this long is great. When you have customers come in saying they’ve been coming to us for years and years, that is a great feeling. Seventy years is a long time for a business to be in one place. landed in the real estate industry. David started his career in the financial industry and then moved on to a large advertising firm. They were enjoying life in the big city and corporate jobs, and then something changed. “Julie’s dad called and convinced us that the real estate industry in Carmel was the place to be,” David says. “We were starting our family, and as they have always said, Carmel is a great place to raise a family. So, we left our corporate jobs in Chicago and moved back home to Carmel.” When the Mortons returned to Carmel at Christmas in 1992, they dove right into the residential real estate market. Julie settled into her career in real estate while David
launched into home building and land development. The couple noticed the change in demographics drove changes to the Carmel landscape and the real estate market. “What we once knew as a city with traditional neighborhoods lined with what we affectionately called the Carmel Box (a two-story home with four bedrooms upstairs and two and one-half baths), was now starting to offer buyers incredible options,” David says.
So, the couple has created Carmel Homes Realty capitalizing on what the pair does best and making a statement of their dedication to the local community. “Julie brings her expertise as a broker to the table, and she’s the captain who walks the client through all the steps and processes of the transaction of buying or selling a home,” David says.

We live in a city filled with exciting summer activities for all ages. Whether you like to spend time wining and dining, a night under the stars, or a combination of both something for everyone is available here in Indy. I’ve compiled a list of 10 things to keep you, your family and your friends entertained this summer.
1. VISIT A FARMERS’ MARKET
Make your grocery list and check out the farmers’ markets in your town. Local vendors bring their best produce, meats, wines, flowers, baked goods and everything in between to these markets. I’m planning to check out the Fishers market a few times this summer. 28 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atCarmel.com
2. P ICNIC CONCERT SERIES AT MALLOW RUN
This is one of my favorite ways to spend Saturday night on Indy’s southside. Mallow Run always has great bands, delicious food trucks and, of course, amazing wine. This series runs through September, and you can check out the concert lineup at mallowrun.com.
3. EXPLORE MASS AVE
The Mass Ave area is constantly changing, adding new restaurants, wineries and local businesses. You could easily spend an afternoon enjoying brunch, visiting the shops and stopping for wine tasting. It’s a lively area that’s great for a girl’s night or a date night. 4. VISIT CONNER PRAIRIE
Conner Prairie has always been a favorite for me. My family and I used to go every Fourth of July when I was younger, and last year we started the tradition again. This is another great way to get the kids out of the house, learn some history and enjoy a beautiful summer day. 5. R UOFF HOME MORTGAGE MUSIC CENTER
The name of the venue may change many more times, but the music will always be great. The lineup for summer looks especially tailgate worthy. Pro tip for experiencing concerts at Ruoff: arrive early and stay late. Beat the traffic by packing a picnic and plan to stay well after the concert ends so bring snacks for that too. 6. CHECK OUT AN ART FAIR
We are fortunate to be a city filled with artistic events including art fairs. Talbot Street is coming up June 16-17 so if you’re looking for handmade pottery, unique paintings or handcrafted jewelry add this to your summer calendar. 7. SPEND A DAY AT GEIST
Did you know you can rent a pontoon boat at Geist? Spending a weekend on the water is one of my favorite ways to soak up the summer sun. We always like to do a pitchin and have everyone bring their favorite appetizers. Grab a group of up to 10 friends and reserve your boat for the day. atCarmel.com / JUNE 2018 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 29
8. E NJOY DINNER IN DOWNTOWN GREENWOOD
This area has been revamped over the years and it is home to some well-known local businesses. One of my favorite places to dine is La Trattoria. Their steak is so tender and pairs nicely with a glass of Pinot Noir. I’d recommend reservations for the weekends.

9. H IKE AND CAMP AT TURKEY RUN
My husband and I love to spend summer nights in the woods, making hot dogs and s’mores over a fire. Turkey Run is one of our favorite state parks in Indiana with some great hiking trails. You can reserve a campsite and enjoy a night under the stars. 10. VISIT COXHALL GARDENS

Take a day trip to Holiday World While this isn’t exactly local for those of us in Central Indiana, Holiday World makes for such a great day trip at any age. We like to spend a day in the water park every year with a group of friends. It’s about a 3-hour drive from Indianapolis and the weekends are insanely busy so plan accordingly. I suggest going during the week if possible.
