The Tools for School event is an immense undertaking. It requires a little more than 1,000 individuals to put it on. From the setup and teardown to working the event in many areas, the center relies on the local parishioners, service organizations and the general public for volunteers. Those who wish to learn more and sign up to volunteer can visit the center’s website and register through a link that is highlighted on their site. Starting July 30, school supplies will be available during regular food pantry hours as long as supplies last. The Tools for School 2016 registration form for families who wish to participate must be completed by July 12 by 7 p.m. Appointments are filled on a first come, first served basis until all slots are filled. LIFE’S A BEACH WHISKEY
Writer / Janelle Morrison
Coming soon to a liquor store near you, the smooth and exceptional Beach Whiskey brand will be debuting “re-imagined” whiskey in the Indiana markets by the end of summer. Beach Whiskey LLC Chief Executive Officer Smoke Wallin is a Carmel resident and is a well-known “serial entrepreneur.” Wallin is also CEO of Carmel-based Taliera. He has a successful track record in the beverage industry. He created Cameron Springs Company, the bottled water company that was eventually sold to Nestle Corporation in 2000. Among many of his accomplishments, Wallin was the founder of eSkye.com, a software company designed specifically for the alcohol industry. eSkye.com ended up being the largest provider of winery
production and sales software in the world and was headquartered in Carmel. It was sold to a publicly traded company from Canada in 2007.
Wallin received his BS in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University and his MBA from Vanderbilt Business School. He led the wine and spirits industry in Washington, D.C., as Chairman, President and Director of the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) 19962004. He also served on the Government Affairs committee for the Craft Brewers Association. Wallin served the Young Presidents’ Organization as Chairman of the Global Beer Wine and Spirits Network for 2010-2013 and serves on the board for the Food and Beverage Network with over 1,700 CEOs. The creation and launch of Beach Whiskey has Wallin and his co-founders excited
for their “re-imagined” whiskey brand. Beach Whiskey, founded in 2015, was the collaboration of a group of entrepreneurs who represent the beverage, entertainment, lifestyle and business service industries. The initial launch and rollout of Beach Whiskey Island Coconut and Beach Whiskey Bonfire Cinnamon will first appear in the Southern California and Florida markets, and according to Wallin, it should make its debut in the Indiana markets by late summer. Wallin and his co-founders ended up raising approximately $8.5 million in their Series A round. Prior to their launch, the Beach Whiskey Facebook page had well over 30,000 “Likes”. Beach Whiskey is produced in an old Seagram’s plant in Lawrenceburg, Ind., and bottled in Louisville, Ky. “I’ve been working on lots of new brands

over the years,” Wallin said. “I became interested in the whiskey category and began thinking of ways to re-imagine whiskey aside from traditional aged-whiskey that people sip on while lounging in their chair along with a cigar. I began to think of ways to make whiskey fun and relevant to today’s consumers, specifically on how to make it attractive to the next generation, Millennials. “Co-founder Andrew McGinnis shared a story with me, prior to creating Beach Whiskey, where he had noticed the dusty whiskey bottles on the shelf at a beach
“We went to work on creating a new concept of whiskey that was made for the beach, for some fun in the sun and that would be relevant to the Millennial markets. My generation, Gen X, grew up in the shadow of the Baby Boomers and is a smaller generation by population. We didn’t mind drinking the volume brands that were out when we came of age. What I think makes the Millennials different and unique is that they are as big as the Baby Boomer generation. They have been brought up around technology and social media. They are savvy to having endless choices and how to access things quickly.
club bar he frequented in Santa Monica. The vodka, rum and tequila bottles were perpetually flying off of the shelves, and he wondered why not the whiskey?
“We have followed the wine and craft beer trends over the years. The spirits industry has been grossly behind beer and wine until recently. We are not a huge conglomerate.
We are an independent producer who has a different take on the market. I think that the timing has never been better to be innovative in creating new products, how we brand our products and how we reach our target markets in traditional and non-traditional ways. We have to connect in more natural and organic ways that make our consumers feel like they discovered us, and we have to make sure that we are positioned in a way that we can be discovered.” Wallin has packaged the whiskey in a way that reflects the values of Beach Whiskey. The bright and colorful sea glass bottles reflects the company’s affection for the beach and its belief in sharing the responsibility for preserving the world’s water and beaches, while promoting a fun and relaxing beach lifestyle.

HISTORICAL HAMILTON COUNTY SETTLEMENT RECEIVES MARKER Writer / Janelle Morrison
In June 2014, we brought you the riveting history of Roberts Settlement located in northern Hamilton County and of the families’ annual homecoming celebration. The ancestors of Elijah Roberts, Hansel Roberts and Micajah Walden are celebrating the installation of a historical maker received by the Indiana Historical Bureau at their July 4th Homecoming gathering. The Indiana Marker Program Manager Casey Pfeiffer spoke on behalf of the Indiana Historical Bureau. “On Saturday, July 2, 2016, the Indiana Historical Bureau welcomed the addition of a new historical marker to the Indiana State Historical
Marker Collection when we helped commemorate Roberts Settlement in Atlanta, Indiana,” Pfeiffer said.
will appropriately take place during the Settlement’s annual homecoming celebration.
“Roberts Settlement was one of several early rural settlements in the state that was established by free people of color. In the beginning of the 19th century, racial tension in the South greatly jeopardized free blacks’ economic, social and religious rights. As a result, many migrated north in search of greater freedoms. “Free African Americans founded Roberts Settlement in 1835. The Indiana Historical Bureau is excited to help unveil this new marker for Roberts Settlement at the upcoming dedication ceremony, which
Brenda Myers, the president and CEO of Visit Hamilton County, is dedicated to assisting the families and related organizations to ensure that the history, the Roberts Chapel and its future will be preserved for all of time. “The Roberts Chapel and settlement story is iconic for Hamilton County,” Myers expressed. “This marker will showcase how important this location is, but I encourage those interested in the county’s history to use this as an opportunity to dig deeper. The settlement is about opportunity, access, connectivity and community … family.

WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS PROJECT: HONORING VETERANS WITH JILL FEWELL
Writer / Kara Reibel Photography provided
Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans is an initiative created by the Department of Defense to honor those who fought for our country during the Vietnam War. 2015-2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the homecoming of our troops from this unpopular war. Their return was far from celebrated, and these recent efforts are better late than never. Marking this historic anniversary is the creation of a Commemorative Gift to be given to all seven million Vietnam veterans with 150,000 of these brave
men and women in Indiana. The gift is the first of its kind to be given to our veterans and includes a 160-page hardbound book, feature documentary and an interactive eBook. The organization of this effort extends to the states to take on local fundraising and personalization of a portion of each book, which is a gorgeous, hardback coffee table book specific to each state. She’s a member of the World War II Roundtable, and if there is an event for veterans in central Indiana, it’s almost guaranteed she played a role in it. “It’s all about the Veterans, not me,” says Jill, who always spells Veterans with an
“After Mom died, we all began worrying more about Dad.” —Kate Weese “Having raised 10 children in our family, our Mom and Dad were always busy and very active socially, even after we all left their home. When Mom died suddenly, we knew it would be difficult for Dad to transition into a “new normal” in an empty home. With the help of all the kids, from coast to coast, we sought a retirement community that would provide Dad with a safe and active life. uppercase “V” out of respect. “They come first to me!” Actor Gary Sinise, Lee Greenwood, Jon Voight, Elizabeth Dole, Paul Page and many other nationally-known celebrities support this effort. Jill’s job is to bring that focus locally to fundraise in order to provide the Commemorative Gift to all 150,000 Indiana Vietnam veterans.
“It’s about time,” says Ponytail Paul Cauley, a Vietnam veteran and President of the World War II Roundtable of the long-awaited honor for those who served in Vietnam. Cauley served with the 101st Airborne, Infantry 3rd of the 506th Currahee. Cauley just returned from a 13th reunion with his unit. reunions since 1995. “I used to not wear anything indicative of my service to my country, but I wear something daily that displays with honor that I served my country, and every day, I have people come up to me to thank me for my service." Cauley returned home from Vietnam in November of 1971 to a rude awakening. That year was marked by public displays of hostility towards the veterans who fought. This included horrific accounts of actions by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam by Senator John Kerry on Capitol Hill and anti-war protests across the country, culminating in the killings of protestors on Kent State campus. Cauley noticed sentiment was changing a couple decades ago during Desert Storm, and the U.S. was starting to support our military. That’s when he began to proudly wear evidence of his service. Indiana is an early adopter state for the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans effort; however, many states have raised their funds and are distributing the Gift. In Mississippi, their Governor is spearheading the effort. Clearly an important effort by all states, the support for this project is unsurpassed. “We hope to experience a similar success in Indiana,” says Jill, who is hopeful that our State Legislature will create a bill allocating a portion of the necessary funding. Upcoming Vietnam veterans events include the Kokomo Healing Fields reunion in September, which is the largest of its kind. SUE ELLSPERMANN IS LEADING BY EXAMPLE Writer / Kara Reibel Photography provided
We teach what we’ve been taught. We help others in the manner that we have experienced. Sue Ellspermann shares her mentors and those who have impacted her life along with her plans for leadership of Indiana’s largest public postsecondary institution and the largest singly-accredited statewide community college system in the entire country. The new President of Ivy Tech Community College, Sue Ellspermann hails from the beautiful town of Ferdinand where she’s lived since the age of 2. One of six children, Sue and her two sisters worked in their father’s small jewelry store after school and on weekends through high school.
Ferdinand,” shares Sue, who confided only in Sister Kathy, aside from her husband, Jim, about the upcoming Lt. Governor run for office. The St. Benedict rules consist of community, prayer, hospitality and work. “Sister Kathy helps me to remain grounded.” While serving as Lt. Governor, Sue became involved with the Indiana Conference for Women. Now as a member of their Advisory Committee, Sue continues to promote the conference across the state. Conference co-founder Billie Dragoo served on an Indiana Bicentennial committee with Sue for “Big Ideas,” which not only celebrates Indiana, but it provides a strong vision looking forward to our next 100 years of statehood. The full reveal of this plan will be announced in September.
While studying industrial engineering at Purdue, Sue’s keen interest in unstructured problem-solving and strategic planning began. While working for Frito Lay in Dallas, she met Dr. Min Basadur, a thought leader in the applied creativity realm of corporate innovation. “Dr. Basadur became not only a mentor, but after leaving Frito Lay, I joined him as a consultant on a colleague level,” shares Sue. Basadur was the founder of the process she used, and it was his research that provided the foundation Sue expanded upon through her own consultation experience. While Sue was building her consultancy business, another key mentor was Kathy Kleindorfer. “Kathy was an excellent leader,” says Sue. “She emphasized the importance of under-promising and over-delivering.” Sue’s first big client was Kimball International. Jim Thyen, CEO of Kimball International, had a leadership style that Sue admired. “He always did the right thing, even if that meant lowering profits in lieu of laying off workers,” states Sue of Thyen. “He took care of people and was not overly focused on the profit motive.” Later, Thyen would serve as a friend and trusted advisor while Sue was making the decision to run for State Representative. After 20 years of consulting and strategic planning, Sue founded and served as Director of the Center for Applied Research and Economic Development at the University of Southern Indiana. Shortly after leaving this position, Sue received a call from then-Congressman Pence to be his Lt. Governor. “My spiritual director is Sister Kathy Huber (member of the Huber Winery family) and a Prioress with St. Benedict’s Monastery in TownePost.com / JULY 2016 / INDY METRO
“I am beyond excited that one of my initiatives for women was considered,” says Dragoo, who recently attended The Global Entrepreneurship Summit with President Obama and other international business leaders. “Billie is an amazing leader and role model,” says Sue of Dragoo, who also serves as CEO of RepuCare. “I feel very strongly that
the Indiana Conference for Women is an excellent opportunity for women to network and get inspired to do more.” Speaking of doing more, as President of Ivy Tech, Sue brings with her a powerful agenda designed to facilitate success for their students. As Lt. Governor, she served as Vice Chair of the Indiana Career Council, which focuses on aligning

education with workforce needs. The committee set the goal of 60 percent of our Hoosier workforce having postsecondary credentials/degrees by 2025. This means an additional one million Hoosiers need to skill up, and the bulk of those degrees will come from community colleges, such as Ivy Tech. Currently, there are 20,000 graduates with certificates and/or associate degrees from Ivy Tech Community College each year. That number needs to more than double to meet the goal. Sue intimately understands the needed flexibility with earning degrees. It took her eight years of commuting to Louisville from Evansville to complete her doctorate in industrial engineering. A high level of patience and persistence, along with family support, carried her through. The importance of increasing flexibility for degree completion, accompanied with courses that assist with skilling up our workforce such as Ivy Tech’s partnership with Eleven Fifty Academy, are a few ways Ivy Tech is working to elevate the graduation rate for their students.

“There will be one million tech jobs in 2020,” says Eleven Fifty Academy President John Qualls. “The number is staggering, and the opportunity is there for students to enroll in coding classes. The partnership with Ivy Tech opens the door for students to reach their potential and bridge this gap.” At various growth stages of Sue’s life, she has had the pleasure of being around inspiring mentors. She believes strongly in giving back and in being a mentor to others. Before leaving office as Lt. Governor, Sue left a legacy by being a part of many amazing programs. She is walking into leadership with Ivy Tech Community College with the skill set to create, perhaps, her most meaningful impact. For more information, visit ivytech.edu or in.gov/ibc. A SUMMER GUIDE TO BETTER HEALTH Writer / Stephanie Carlson Miller
Do you want to feel energetic? Prevent illness? Ease chronic pain? Relieve stress? Remove toxins and heal naturally? Get moving on the path toward improving your quality of life by transforming your mind, body and spirit. Dive into goal setting and commit to wellness, a habit-forming, motivating way to live a more balanced and productive life. Regardless of your current level of fitness or age, from young mothers and seniors to cancer patients and those who suffer from serious ailments, a community of competent coaches and specialists are lined up to help jumpstart your sprint or marathon race to a healthy lifestyle.
TEAM FIT LIVIN’
“Support and accountability creates a platform for success,” says Matt Shade, founder of Team Fit Livin’ who firmly believes individuals are responsible for taking ownership of their health. “In my 20 years as a personal trainer, I found that being part of a community of support encourages and motivates people, especially those who might feel intimidated or unsure of what activity to participate in. We organize group workouts, swims, runs, training rides, team racing and social events,” Shade said. “Whether your goal is to run your first 5K or you dream of completing an Ironman triathlon, crossing the finish line is inspiring at any level.”
INWELLIGENT
Inwelligent is a unique healthcare clinic that delivers personalized holistic wellness solutions including therapeutic yoga, Pilates,
acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition counseling, health coaching and corporate wellness programs. Many services may be covered by health insurance. Practitioners collaborate closely with physicians to integrate care complementary to other treatments. The clinic is open to everyone and offers the most successful clinically-tested therapeutics. Practitioners work with patients and individuals to customize personalized plans for overall healthy lifestyle experiences. “Yoga’s benefits extend across the spectrum of human need,” according to Emily Frank, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and bone health at St. Vincent and yoga instructor at Inwelligent located in the St. Vincent Carmel Women’s Center. “The care of a patient means to help them with their entire wellbeing. My class targets the older individual who might have concerns about their bones or joints. I use a multi-faceted approach to keep my patients upright, moving and injury-free. The benefits are nearly immediate and far-reaching.” Kate Downes, licensed acupuncturist and trained in life sciences, integrated and herbal medicine, administers acupuncture at Inwelligent’s clinic. This form of traditional Chinese medicine stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities using thin needles applied to specific points on the body. “Acupuncture improves blood flow and circulation that heals tissues throughout the body, reversing the negative effects of stress,” Downes said. “I really get to the root of the issue by getting to know my patients. Fertility issues, pain, stress relief, digestive problems, sleep deprivation, weight loss and more, my goal is to help your system function properly.” To get a better understanding of the benefits of acupuncture, Downes shares her expertise at katedownesacu.com. Downes works closely with oncologists to determine proper treatments for cancer patients and with obstetricians to implement plans that help pregnant women find relief from the stress of growing a human prior to delivery. In fact, Inwelligent’s mission is to build partnerships with hospitals and healthcare providers in order to complement a patient’s treatments, thus enhancing their ability to heal from an illness or injury and calm anxieties. “Modern science has clearly demonstrated the relationship between physical activity and good health,” explained Joan O’Kane, a certified yoga instructor. “Yoga takes this understanding a step further by explaining that even a few moments of yoga allow the central nervous system to shift from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest, heal, and digest.’” Ancient yogis knew this, and modern scientists and medical professionals now agree. “At Inwelligent, we blend Eastern medicine with traditional Western practices, treating acute conditions and providing people, in general, with well-rounded health solutions.”

KOKO FIT CLUB
Like Inwelligent, Body Outfitters, located in downtown Zionsville, also takes a one-on-one approach to taking care of clients. Personal trainer Mark Moreland believes people who are strong and healthy are able to more fully engage in life. “Skilled coaches are effective and hold you accountable,” Moreland said. “Programming encompasses all areas of fitness designed specifically to suit the individual’s needs and goals.” Considering the variety of wellness opportunities, Indianapolis (including Carmel and Anderson) ranks as the least fit city out of 50 metropolitan areas across the nation in the 2016 American College of Sports Medicine American Fitness Index. The data in this report reveals “a composite of personal health measures, preventative behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions as well as environment and community resources and policies that support physical activity.” The Scientific Snapshot of the State of Health and Fitness at the Metropolitan Level is available at americanfitnessindex.org/report.
Koko Fit Club also closely watches workouts using technology to coach. The club is nothing like traditional gyms. A quiet studio encourages members to engage in short 45-minute workouts tailored to desired fitness accomplishments. Coined Smartraining, the facility features around-the-clock access to audio-coached fitness sessions and guided, high-intensity interval training that automatically tracks and records progress, emailing results after each workout. According to certified FitCoach H.B. Hayes, the gym was founded to change lives – to help people get fit and stay fit. “Smartraining encompasses three components: strength training, cardio and custom nutrition plans,” says Hayes, describing a 13-week program that teaches healthy habits that enable people to train their minds to make healthy living a way of life. “In 30 days, our clients feel so much better without enduring the intimidation of a traditional gym setting. Fit checks measure lean muscle and Enhanced BMI early on to motivate, create accountability for personal fitness and gauge success of each individual.”

In addition to individual health, Inwelligent and Fit Livin’ believe in engaging corporations in wellness solutions, promoting preventative healthcare maintenance, overall fitness, lower healthcare costs and improved productivity for their employees. “The longer term benefit is you lead by example, and making this world a better, healthier place is inspiring,” Shade said. Fit Livin’ has designed an IOS and Android mobile app to be launched in July with the mission of helping users make fitness a reality. Ultimately, the right dose of exercise and healthy lifestyle choices will help you achieve your fitness, wellness and corporate health goals. Treatments focused on ailing patients or seniors as well as those new to workouts or fully engaged in fitness, blended with the customized healing and stress-busting wellness offerings at Inwelligent’s integrative healthcare clinic, are literally just what the doctor ordered.

The Art of Artomobilia Writer / Janelle Morrison • Photographer / Anthony Ross Tyler
Each year, Artomobilia features a distinct gathering of collector cars, automotive enthusiasts and recognized artists that are showcased on the streets of the Carmel Arts & Design District. Artomobilia boasts one of the most eclectic gatherings of original period-correct automobiles anywhere, including Supercars, Exotic, Sports Cars, Classics, Racers, Historically Preserved, Indiana Built, Sedan/Coupe and more. The event brings in an estimated 20,000 spectators and enthusiasts into the heart of the city of Carmel. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 27 and feature approximately 400 cars, an impressive array of musical talent performing at the West and East stages, a plein air painting event that spectators can watch and a live photo shoot exhibition with internationally renowned photographer Anthony Ross Tyler.
participate in the exhibition will be parked in a group near the Main stage, and their cars will be individually photographed in an “industrial” setting. “Having attended numerous shows, I can say that Artomobilia is unique because it blends the art and the engineering in a way that I have never seen any other show do,” Tyler said. Tyler, a resident of Nashville, Tennessee, has family in Greenwood and visits Indianapolis often. Through contacts and associations made over the years, Tyler was connected with John Leonard, and the two began brainstorming a new concept to include during Artomobila.
CAPTURING THE ART OF METAL
Each year, the Artomobilia celebrates automotive art and design, and there are few photographers that more clearly capture this than internationally recognized photographer Anthony Ross Tyler. Tyler will be shooting the Artomobilia Best in Show and the Artomobilia Penultimate. He will be taking reservations from select car owners that wish to have their car photographed before, during or after the Artomobilia August 27. Tyler will present a “live photo shoot” exhibition throughout the day that features both his past work as well him actively applying his art. Those who wish to
“John and I wanted to encapsulate the art form of the car as well as what I am trying to do when I shoot photography and put it into an event-type of stature that felt right for the show,” Tyler explained. “We came up with the expedition concept. It is a totally new concept for me and so not what I typically do, and that’s what makes it cool. It is highly experimental, and I have no idea which way this will go, but that again is part of the fun and excitement. “I will have my examples of my large print 30 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / JULY 2016 / atCarmel.com
work that I do for my commercial and private-owner clients. I will also have a few hardbound books of my work, so that people can see what I do. I’ll spend approximately 30-45 minutes on each car and will produce roughly four images per car out in the open, so that people can watch it all happen. Hopefully, they will enjoy watching the process.” Learn more about Anthony Ross Tyler and see more of his work at arosstyler.com.
EXHIBITS EN PLEIN AIR
The Carmel Artomobilia is designed to celebrate automotive art and design, and there’s no better way to do celebrate this than to highlight recognized, as well as up-and-coming, artists and their work. In 2015, Artomobilia and the Hoosier Salon partnered to feature a plein air paint-out and invited a collection of Indiana arts to paint in and around the cars of the Artomobilia. The work of Wyatt LeGrand was selected for our annual commissioned painting to be used on our poster and program cover. For 2016, the Artomobilia will feature a number of artists and their art in the months preceding the show as well as on the day of the show. Jim May, Executive Director of

A stronger voice. A significant presence. A new business advocate in an ever-changing marketplace. The Carmel and Fishers Chambers of Commerce have joined to become OneZone. The Carmel and Fishers Magazines have partnered with OneZone to produce a quarterly overview of what is important to our members, our businesses and to our communities. If you have a story or a topic of discussion that you would like see shared with over 45,000 residents and professionals, please contact Janelle Morrison, janelle9496@me.com.
OneZone’s Value Proposition Expands we have in common is our belief that strong businesses make strong communities. We interpret that as meaning what’s good for local businesses will be good for Carmel and Fishers.” Merhoff explained Carmel and Fishers are able to market their communities and attract business investment, thanks to enviable infrastructure, high-performing schools, expansive parks and recreational opportunities, arts and cultural activities and an overall appealing quality of life.
Mo Merhoff Photo by JJ Kaplan Writer / Janelle Morrison We sat down with OneZone president Mo Merhoff to discuss new programs and opportunities for members. Since the merger last year, OneZone has continued to expand their menu of offerings and business-centric programs. “There’s an old chamber saying – ‘If you’ve seen one chamber of commerce, you’ve seen one chamber of commerce,’” Merhoff said. “Chambers are very diverse organizations, depending on the business communities they serve. What
One of the things OneZone has done to assist businesses is to focus luncheon programs on topics important to continued community growth. “We want to bring in speakers and topics related to things you need or want to know to ensure there’s a business takeaway.” A second emphasis has been on being a business information resource. “For example, we want to be the place businesses looking for sign information can call for direction and help.” A third emphasis, Merhoff said, “is advocacy. The first line on our merger collateral piece says ‘A stronger voice.’ We believe Hamilton County has exceptional business leadership, so we asked ourselves, ‘Why shouldn’t we be more vocal at all levels: local, state and federal?'” Toward that goal, OneZone kept both of their respective advocacy committees in Carmel and
Fishers post-merger. Both meet on a regular basis and work toward business-friendly issues. The City of Fishers is in the throes of planning for the U.S. 31 project, so that committee is working with the City to ensure information is shared and local businesses have input. “The Carmel advocacy committee is focusing on many of the rapid-fire ordinances that have taken place in 2016, many involving legislation to make doing business in the city easier,” Merhoff explained. “OneZone also created a state advocacy committee made up of leaders from both communities who establish our agenda at the statewide level. We are also participating in the Indiana Chamber’s ‘fly-in’ in September, bringing OneZone members to Washington, D.C., to meet with our representatives. We’re anxious to learn what federal-level issues can help us here in Hamilton County. Meanwhile, we haven’t lost sight of providing engaging activities for people to meet people. While that’s an important part of what we do, it can’t be all of it. The advocacy, the educational opportunities and the events are central to our work as well. “This spring, we’ve been able to add additional services, thanks to a new relationship with the Indianapolis chapter of SCORE. SCORE is the

“We haven’t lost sight of providing engaging activities for people to meet people.” — Mo Merhoff oldest business mentoring organization in the nation. Vera Bradley, a former SCORE mentee, is only one of their success stories. Our SCORE relationship will provide three things to our members. First, SCORE conducts educational workshops on issues pertaining especially to small businesses. Secondly, they provide oneon-one mentoring from men and women who have experience in start-ups and successful small business operation. Mentoring sessions will be available at the OneZone office.
“Thirdly, SCORE will facilitate small business roundtables. Our roundtables – and we’ve had a very successful one operating for the last four years – are peer-to-peer groups who, over time, build trust and rely on one another for business advice. These are not networking groups. They’re about building relationships with a group of peers, so that the group becomes their own board of directors, in a sense, for one another.”
With the collaboration of SCORE, OneZone is planning to create two new roundtables by year-end: one for women business owners and another for mid-sized businesses. “Finally, chambers can be in a unique position to serve as conveners. When business leaders, government officials and community members collaborate on a shared vision, amazing things can happen. We want to be paying attention to those opportunities, so that we can ensure the strong business environments our communities have created don’t just continue, but expand.”

Deviating from the Status Quo of Commercial Design Mitsch Design, the award-winning Certified Woman-Owned design firm, is a leading commercial interior design, architectural design, procurement and branding firm known for its innovative thinking and expert implementation of design. Founded in 1989 by principal designer Jeryl Mitsch, the design firm continues to grow in downtown Carmel. The firm’s areas of expertise include: corporate, healthcare, higher education, hospitality, faithbased, industrial and multi-family. Working on its 27th year in business, Mitsch Design has survived the ebbs and flows of the economy over the decades. Mitsch adapted her business to sustain the changing economic climates and has weathered the storms. “After 9/11, we were mostly corporate design,” Mitsch said. “Citizens Energy Group and Dow AgroSciences are a couple of our clients. After the recession, I noticed that companies that were really healthy were more diverse in their client base. I strategically switched and started going after more higher education projects. We work with Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame and Vincennes Universities. We’ve also worked with IUPUI in Indianapolis. We work with medical and healthcare organizations such as Eskenazi Hospital, Community and St. Vincent Hospitals. The firm has worked with the Delta Faucet Company on its interior design and worked with the Indianapolis-based architectural design firm, Architura. “Another segment of our business that is
absolutely exploding is the multi-family. We are working with the apartments at Penn Circle; we do the interior designs and usually the amenities spaces and the models for projects like Penn Circle Apartments. We also usually do the exterior amenities. An award-winning project for us was The Depot in Fishers. We did the Solana Apartments on 79th Street too. We are in 10 different states, working for 24 developers and probably 50 projects that are coming up out of the ground around the country. “We are focusing on the multi-family sector, and we work with probably 80 percent of the local multi-family developers. In commercial design, typically here in Indianapolis, a designer will specify the furniture and bid it, but in the multi-family world, a designer is expected by the developers to work the entire project from start to finish. So a designer is doing the space planning, designing, selecting, quoting, buying, sending it to the site location and installing it. In the local corporate sector, it is very different. Typically, corporate designers will do the space planning and do what is called the construction document set (CDS), but when it comes to the furniture, they usually spec it and bid it. In the last couple years, we’ve been asked to do the whole project because it really is easier that way, and we have so much history in the multifamily sector.” Mitsch Design is also expanding its services as a furniture dealer in the commercial world.
atCarmel.com / JULY 2016 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 35
Mitsch Design recently aligned itself with Tayco, a Canadian-based office furniture company out of Toronto. They compete with the top five products that most corporate endusers have an opportunity to use here in Indiana. “This has been well received in the last two months,” Mitsch enthused. “We can do the entire package. We can start with the space planning, get through the design, order the furniture, be there when the trucks arrive and help with the installation. We also offer branding for our clients too.” In addition to the cities where the firm is currently designing, Mitsch Design is making a big push in the Atlanta area. It is concentrating on the developers in that city, particularly in the multi-family sector, and senior care and university housing that is growing substantially in that market and submarkets. Currently, the firm employs 25 people, 18 of which are designers. Many of the designers are cross-trained and do the procurement, furniture segment and design work. Mitsch said that she would likely add five more associates to her team by next year, maybe more due to the firm’s addition of furniture dealership. For more information on its menu of services and furniture line, visit mitschdesign.com or stop in at their showroom located in the Indiana Design Center in Carmel.

Chris Scherzinger, CEO of Jarden Branded Consumables
Its Business is Brands Jarden Home Brands, a subsidiary of Newell Brands, Inc. (formerly Newell Rubbermaid Inc.), is enjoying growth and prosperity just a little over a year since its relocation to the city of Fishers. Jarden Home Brands was previously a subsidiary of the consumer products giant Jarden Corporation until mid-April of this year. Jarden Corporation and Newell Rubbermaid Inc. merged, creating a $16 billion entity that continues to trade on the New York Stock Exchange as “NWL.” Jarden Home Brands offers its consumers a litany of products among its portfolio of over 120+ brands. Under the guidance of current senior management, Jarden has grown (organically and through acquisitions) into a globally recognized company. In May 2015, Jarden Home Brands relocated to its current 637,000 square foot distribution center in Fishers from Daleville, Indiana. Chris Scherzinger, CEO of Jarden Branded Consumables at Jarden Corporation, spoke with us about some of the better-known products, the relocation and the growth that the company has experienced in the last year. “The origins of Jarden were originally a spinoff of the Ball Corporation into a consumer products company call Altrista in the mid-’90s that eventually became Jarden Corporation in May 2002,” Scherzinger said. “Jarden Home Brands shares a common ancestry with the Ball Corporation, though the two are completely separate companies. We partner with Ball Corporation through a
license of the Ball trademark to continue the consumer business. We maintain the sales and marketing for Ball brand fresh preserving products such as canning jars.” Scherzinger shared that the company has just over 300 employees to date and growing. The company had originally forecasted that they would have 300 employees over a period of three to four years in the early discussions with local officials regarding their relocation. They have exceeded that benchmark within the first year post-relocation. “We are growing faster than originally anticipated in terms of both the business performance as well as the staffing,” Scherzinger said. Growth was the catalyst for the company’s relocation from Daleville to Fishers. It had outgrown its facility. Scherzinger explained that the city officials, then town managers, and members of the Economic Development Commission were incredibly welcoming. “Mayor Scott Fadness, the economic development group and a handful of other individuals, were super welcoming and talked with us about where Fishers was going and the visions that they had for the city,” he shared. “We got a positive vibe from the leadership within the community. We had the right building at the right price, a local government that was engaged and eager to help us meet our needs and the amenities of the community. Our employees also benefit from the amenities from the surrounding Carmel and Noblesville areas. It is important for me and for the other members of the Jarden Home

Brands leadership to make the connections between our company and our community. We are proud to showcase the infrastructure, education and quality of life that we enjoy to our prospective employees.” While many might not be as familiar with the Jarden Home Brands name, they may recognize the vast catalog of brands that they sell and that people use in their everyday lives. Brands such as Diamond Brand Cutlery, Pine Mountain Fire Logs and Bicycle Playing Cards are just a few of the better-known labels. “Our brands are most successful when we’re bringing new and innovative products that matter most to the end user’s lives,” Scherzinger concluded. “We are always working to get the word out about our brands. For me personally, I am an avid canner, and I enjoy cooking. My wife’s a gardener, so I am particularly jazzed about the Ball canning jar business and what Jarden Home Brands can do to create new experiences for the consumers of Ball canning jars and for all of our products and consumers. “We are constantly monitoring consumer satisfaction and want the people using our products to be delighted with them. Our brands have to be able to deliver a level of excitement to the marketplace in order for us to thrive and grow. We succeed and fail by our brands. The consumers’ satisfaction and the discovery of new and innovative products are always at the forefront of our minds.”
