Owner Diane Cannon and partners Ken and Elaine Keltner
Juniper on Main Local Eatery Bursts with Southern Charm
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Michael Durr
In 2000, Carmel natives Diane Cannon and Kevin Keltner moved to Savannah, Georgia, where they lived in a bungalow neighborhood. During their six years there, they grew to love not only the trees and foliage but also the tasty southern fare. While there, Keltner and Cannon became friends with a fellow Hoosier chef who had attended culinary school in Manhattan. “We worked with her for a year at her restaurant in downtown Savannah where we catered lavish, historic-district weddings,” Cannon says. When Keltner and Cannon moved back to Indiana in 2006, they began talking to Keltner’s parents Ken and Elaine, who at the time ran the Herff Jones company out of a quaint house on Carmel’s Main Street. When they decided to retire, they wondered what their next step would be. “They’re not really the retiring type,” Cannon says with a chuckle. Though the foursome had been talking since 1996 about how great the Carmel spot would be for a restaurant, it wasn’t until 2017 when they finally took the plunge and transformed the building into a unique
eatery. They pulled inspiration from the restaurant they had worked at in Savannah, which was an old, abandoned garden shed covered with wildflowers. In addition, the area was adorned with giant oak trees and moss. “We wanted that same vibe so you don’t feel like you’re in a city,” says Cannon, who created a beautiful indoor-outdoor, open-air setting with a screened porch and an allcedar pergola decorated with soft twinkle lights. “Our outdoor setting is upscale but super casual,” Cannon says. “You feel like you’re on vacation and have stumbled upon a hidden gem in a little sea-coast town.” When the foursome was brainstorming landscaping ideas and someone suggested planting a row of juniper trees to block the parking lot, the name Juniper on Main was born. They opened in August of 2019 and are now open for both lunch and dinner. Their chef friend, originally from Franklin, had just moved back to Indiana, and she created the southern coastal menu. Since then, the team has attracted two additional chefs - one from Savannah and the other from Athens. They too have collaborated on the menu, which features fried green 8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atCarmel.com
tomatoes with green tomato jam, sweet cornbread and southern blackened catfish over heirloom cheese grits with sautéed garlic okra and pickled red onion, as well as southern coastal island favorites like chililime grilled salmon with sweet plantains, coconut rice and citrus black beans. “I wanted to transport the south to Main Street Carmel but tailor it to our community by including items I knew would fit well here,” Cannon says. “We took the fine-dining coastal thing and added fun tacos and sandwiches to the menu.” Their fastest-growing favorite is the Moon River burger, which is two smashed patties with pimento cheese, fontina, bacon jam and pickled red onion on Texas toast. “Our dueling shrimp and grits will forever be our classic favorites,” Cannon says. “Our heirloom grits are flown in from Edisto Island, South Carolina, from a small-batch farm called Geechie Boy Mills.” The indoor decor mimics the feel of Savannah and Charleston. The historic bungalow is a part of the community, so restoring the spot was a big part of creating the ambiance. The owners salvaged the old hardwood floors and painted them white. They also invited local artist friends to
create wall art, including seaside cattails and herons. Finally, they planted an herb and vegetable garden to give their guests a sense of their taste and heritage. Indoor and outdoor seating capacity is the same: 46. Due to the coronavirus crisis, they are utilizing the covered patio and 40-foot-long pergola space, which offers sixfoot social distancing and has been popular. The community appreciates the staff ’s commitment to quality. “It’s been remarkable the way everyone has pulled together to make sure that Main Street stays intact,” Cannon says. “It’s been inspiring how people have rallied around not just us but all the businesses on Main Street, to make sure we survive and that Main Street is the same when this is all over.” In this era of COVID-19, the staff uses paper menus and serves all condiments in containers. If someone requests salt and

They also sanitize the bathrooms every 30 minutes and wipe down all tables and chairs. Plus, hand sanitizer pumps are available throughout the establishment. “Honestly, I was born for this,” says Cannon, who has always been vigilant about cleanliness and sanitation. She says she couldn’t be happier with her busy lifestyle. “There’s something so fulfilling coming in and having what feels like organized chaos all day long,” says Cannon, who praises her staff for their commitment to the restaurant’s success. “In the short time we’ve been open, we have developed such a family unit here. I can’t wait to come to work every day.”

Nicole Busch has always loved a good transformation, whether it be physical, spiritual or emotional. Not only did she enjoy the makeover component, but she also loved being the person who sees greatness in others. After becoming a certified stylist, she launched Nicole Blair Wear and had the pleasure of styling clients like Olympic gold medalist Brandi Chastain. get stuck on what they are not or what they used to be, which keeps them from progressing to their next level. Stay-athome moms, for instance, often claim that they have lost all sense of style. As a result, they have an identity crisis. “I help my clients figure out who they are today and what their goals are for tomorrow,” Busch says. “I ask, ‘What do you want out of life?’” She’s been called a style therapist but says she’s mostly a cheerleader for women. “I want them to excel,” says Busch, who offers 20-minute phone consultations to see if a client is a good match. “I want to work with people who are invested to make the change and see the value in what I do.” Busch maintains that every woman should know three things about themselves body type, style personality and personal coloring.
Owner Nicole Busch
true passion lies in styling the everyday woman who has essentially lost herself due to motherhood, career or some other life transition. “I had a client - an executive who was going through a divorce - and she was wearing oversized t-shirts and sweatshirts, and just not seeing her potential,” says Busch, noting that this is not an uncommon sight. “I think that we, as women, are so hard on ourselves. We focus on all the things we are not rather than embracing the things that we are.” Busch asks her clients to identify their goals, whether they be financial, professional or personal.
“I take that, along with what I see, and put together a process or program that will help you get there, and make sure you are dressed for the part,” says Busch, whose clientele includes a woman under 40 years old who has been featured in Forbes Magazine twice. “The woman she was when I first started working with her is not the woman I see today,” Busch says. “Now she’s brave and bold, leaning in more, and asking for more in every aspect of her life. That all started in her closet.” According to Busch, what happens, particularly to women, is that individuals 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atCarmel.com
“When it comes to body type, it’s important to know what does and doesn’t work for you because without that knowledge, you will forever buy stuff that you don’t feel good in and not understand why,” Busch says. “Your personality style is what drives you into a store. You may see something that catches your eye, but the prints or patterns don’t fit your body type. Women experience this all the time. They’re drawn to a style, then experience dressing room drama and spiral out of control when the clothes don’t fit properly.” Color is the third important ingredient. “You should wear a color that complements your natural tendencies,” Busch says. “For instance, if you’re a wallflower I don’t suggest wearing red.” Busch says women often downplay the importance of their morning routine, thinking of it in terms of simply brushing their teeth, washing their face and throwing on some clothes - what Busch calls autopilot dressing. She insists, however, that assembling an outfit is one’s personal work of art.
“I wanted a signature scent that resonated with both me and my clients,” Busch says. “I’m also a firm believer in surrounding yourself with beautiful things.” In the long term, Busch wants her name to be synonymous with inspiring people, feeling great and proudly showing up as the best version of oneself. “You’re sharing your story of who you are even before you open your mouth,” Busch says. She acknowledges that fashion is forever changing, and asserts that this is a positive reality given that we as human beings are ever-evolving as well. “You’re not the same person you were two months ago or even two weeks ago,” Busch says. “We should grow daily.” Busch notes that while women can be naturally geared toward nurturing other
people, they sometimes neglect taking care of themselves. “Part of what I do is allow women to take time to invest in themselves,” says Busch, who works with some clients monthly and others seasonally depending on their needs. She offers packages that are customized to the client. As for Busch’s personal goals, she hopes to make a name for herself in Indianapolis. To that end, she recently launched a new lifestyle company called House of Blair that features candles and body care products.
“I think when you look good and you feel good, you take bigger risks and give yourself the permission to do the things you always wanted to do but talked yourself out of,” Busch says. “When you look and feel good, you show up as your authentic self and display who you were always meant to be.” For more information on Nicole Blair Wear, visit nicoleblairwear.com. Owner Aaron Vaughn
Half-Pipe Dreams Minus Skateshop Sticks the Landing in Carmel
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
Aaron Vaughn knows skateboarding. Originally from Lawrence, Indiana, Vaughn currently resides on the east side of Indy near where he was born and raised and, at 27 years old, he has already been skateboarding for more than 14 years. “I started in middle school and got into it through high school, so it’s been pretty much half my life at this point,” he says. “I was always a little skate rat and didn’t want to go to school or do anything except skateboard. It’s a lot of kids’ dream to be a professional skateboarder. I just buckled down and tried to skate as much as I could.” Several years ago, Vaughn moved to Los Angeles where he pursued structured skateboarding, and when he returned to Indiana he worked for nearly two years
at RISE Skateboard Shop in Carmel as manager. Eventually, Vaughn would purchase the RISE business and rebrand it as Minus Skateshop. “Out there in L.A. is where everything is as far as the industry goes, and skateboarding,” Vaughn says. “When I came back here is when things kind of shifted for me and I thought maybe I could be on the other side of things - to still be able to skate but be a part of skateboarding and provide somehow.” After purchasing RISE and rebranding it as Minus Skateshop, Vaughn moved his new business to South Rangeline Road, officially opening in February of last year. Since then, he’s been pleased with the support he’s received from those in the local skateboarding scene and the community in general. “We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback,” atCarmel.com / AUGUST 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 15
Vaughn says, adding that while his shop was branded in conjunction with the Minus Skateshop on East 54th Street in Indianapolis launched in 2017 by Nick Holub, his Carmel store is a separate business entity from the 54th Street store. Vaughn says the goal when formulating his business model was to create a concept that is part boutique and part classic skate shop. “I want to have that feel of a shop that has the staples and what you need but also carry some of the higher-end brands that are more boutique-style,” he says. “There are certain clothing brands I carry that other skate shops and the other Minus location don’t carry. Nick down on 54th is more of a classic, straight-to-the-point skate shop.” Minus customers will find a wide variety of skateboard decks, hardware and accessories, as well as shoes and apparel. Vaughn also offers full skateboard service and repairs at
People are picking up skateboarding more now than ever with everything going on. the shop, as well as new skateboard builds. “If people bring their boards in and don’t know too much about it, I kind of do an evaluation on it and see if the issue is the bearings or the wheels or if the board is just completely chipped,” he says. Aside from a friend who occasionally fills in for Vaughn at the store when needed, Vaughn runs the shop and all service and repair duties by himself. “Down the line, I’d possibly add some staff, but I’m not sure because I like to oversee
everything,” he says. “I’m a bit of a control freak, especially when it comes to this business - it’s my baby.” Vaughn is now seeing skateboard customers coming into the store ranging from seven years old up to those in their 50s and says this is at least in part due to the coronavirus-related shutdowns of sporting events and other means of physical activity. “People are picking up skateboarding more now than ever with everything going on,” he says. “Since there aren’t a lot of organized sports or anything going
on, people are picking up extracurricular activities. Before everything that’s been going on with the shutdowns, business had been pretty consistent, but after March and April it was like the floodgates were opened. We’re really starting to see a spike in income for the business.” As he continues to grow the Minus brand around the area, Vaughn says his greatest assets for the store are his knowledge of skateboarding culture and his desire to serve the local community. “This has always been a passion of mine, and I’ve always wanted to be involved in the community,” he says. “Between the brands that I carry, and what I’m trying to do for the community here in Carmel and the surrounding locations all the way down to Indy, I’m just trying to bring something different to the table as far as what we have in the shop and what I can do to help the scene, the kids, the parents and everybody.” Minus Skateshop is located at 622 South Rangeline Road, Suite F in Carmel. Integrity Automotive Looks Back on 25-Plus Years In Carmel Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr
Bob Waeiss knew the automotive industry was the right fit for him very early on in life. In fact, before he even finished high school he was studying cars in a formal setting and started gaining valuable experience working at a local auto service shop upon graduating. “It’s kind of the typical story - guys will start working on bicycles, then the lawnmower
and graduate to cars once you get big enough,” Waeiss says with a laugh. “That’s me.”
where I got my foundation, and while I was going there I got a job when I was 16 at the service station at the corner where North Central is. The owner there was my mentor, and I worked for him for probably 15 years.”
Waeiss grew up in Washington Township, and while attending North Central High School, he took classes at the J. Owner Bob Waeiss
Waeiss says. “He knew my girlfriends, knew my wife and watched my kids get born. A lot of the way I run my shop now, and my ethics, came from working under him.” After high school, Waeiss planned to continue his vocational studies at Bob Jones University, but soon found the school was teaching skills he’d already acquired. “J. Everett Light was so awesome, and Bob Jones was actually using the same textbook I used for my two years in high school,” Waeiss says. “I also had experience working with Tom, actually working in the bays for him. So I left school and came back to work for Tom.” Waeiss subsequently worked for his father for several years in the wholesale floral business, but before long he felt the call to return to automobiles.
“When I went back to work at another auto shop, I met a guy, Todd Taylor, who had the very same mindset as me, and we decided to leave where we were and open our own shop,” Waeiss says. Waeiss, his wife Linda, and Todd Taylor officially opened the doors to Integrity Automotive in 1994, and Waeiss and Linda co-own the Carmel business to this day. Initially, Waeiss handled the front office at Integrity Automotive while Taylor worked in the shop, and the two occasionally swapped roles as circumstances warranted. After a few years they added Randy Badger, an auto technician, to the Integrity team, and have brought on as many as three technicians at a time through the years. “My service advisor, J.R. Spoon, has been invaluable to the business,” Waeiss adds. “He assumed my role at the front desk and 18 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atCarmel.com
has been there for the past 10-plus years. He’s the honest, genuine guy that you want to talk to about your car.” Integrity offers a full suite of auto services, from engine repair and brake service to fluid maintenance, suspension repair and tire service. “We’re real strong on Asian and domestic cars, and we’re good on maintenance for European models like BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen,” Weiss says. “Our market is very much the regular family cars.” The Integrity staff strives to collectively educate itself on the latest technology featured in various vehicle makes and models. “The driver-assist technology, with cameras and automatic braking, is our big
challenge right now,” Waeiss says. “Collision avoidance is another big one. You’ve got to have the right equipment to handle that kind of stuff.” Waeiss says one other difference in the way Integrity operates now, compared to back in the 1990s and early 2000s, is the way the company markets itself. “It’s all social media now, and it’s so different today with the way my marketing has changed,” he says. “I have a person who handles all that because it’s so important now.”

and we have eight different ice cream flavors to choose from.”
Jessica and Kevin Lynch, co-owners of Birdies Miniature Golf in Westfield, are excited to open a new restaurant and rooftop bar at their establishment.
Customers at Birdies, meanwhile, have been able to enjoy great food at the Birdies snack bar since early July.
Lynch says she is happy that Birdies has been able to serve food outdoors at the snack bar, as it gave patrons a preview of the restaurant’s cuisine.
“If everything goes as scheduled, we will be able to open the restaurant and the bar at full capacity on August 1,” Jessica Lynch says. “We have had a lot of excited customers asking about it, and that’s been great to hear. It makes you feel good to
“We are already serving amazing, superfresh food such as sliders with American cheese and bacon, our signature slider, and our fried chicken sandwiches,” Lynch says. “The chicken sandwich is hand breaded and delicious. We also have great guacamole, 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2020 / atCarmel.com
“We weren’t able to open the restaurant at a larger capacity yet because of the COVID-19 restrictions, but our customers were still able to get great, high-quality food you would get at a restaurant,” she says. “It’s
safe to serve food outside, and it worked out for everyone. We have had a lot of really great responses from our guests. They love the food, and can’t wait for the restaurant and bar to open August 1.” The upstairs bar will be fully stocked with a large variety of drink choices. “We will have craft beers, mixed drinks, beers on tap, wine, and bourbon lemonade slushees, among a wide variety of other drinks,” Lynch says. “People are very excited.” Lynch says the restaurant will be a fun place to kick back after playing a round of miniature golf. “Everything here has a real casual feel,” she says. “The decor is finished. The bar is decorated with professionally-used hockey sticks in it. The restaurant is a very relaxed place with a family feel. It’s very kid friendly, and fun for all ages. We have food for kids, and straight lemonade slushees for them too.” Lynch, a Carmel High School graduate, says she and Kevin have been overwhelmed by the amount of support the Westfield community has given them since they opened the business. Kevin is a professional hockey player who signed a one-year American Hockey League contract with the Laval Rocket team for the 2019-2020 season. He previously played for the Syracuse Crunch. “The customers have really made the miniature golf course a success since we started in July 2019,” Lynch says. “They have told us we are a special place where they can relax with their families and have a good time.” Many recent customers were anxious to get out of the house during the coronavirusrelated restrictions. “People have told me it’s been nice to be outside in the sunshine,” Lynch says. “They have felt safe doing something with the family outside, and have not had to worry atCarmel.com / AUGUST 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 21

golf course.
Lynch says being located next to Grand Park has been ideal.
“The kids and their parents love the rock cave, the waterfalls, the flowing creek and everything else along the way,” Lynch says. “It’s a very relaxing and fun course to play on. We also have lockers customers love. They are memorabilia lockers with professional athletes’ names on them.”
“We have been very fortunate to be in a great location,” she says. “People who have been at Grand Park like to come by here after being at the park, and continue their fun. Our course is 36 holes, and it’s something we designed from scratch.” Lynch says she and Kevin worked with New Jersey-based Harris Miniature Golf Courses to design the course. “They worked very closely with us on both the construction and design,” she says. “We spent a lot of time planning it. One of the things people have told me they really like is having a choice between playing 18 holes or 36 holes.” Lynch has also heard many compliments about the unique features on the miniature
Lynch believes the restaurant and rooftop bar will enhance an already-successful concept. “I think the whole Westfield area has become a destination for family fun, and being able to add more things such as the restaurant and bar just makes the whole experience better,” she says.
