CARMEL MUSIC ACADEMY EXPANDS OFFERINGS For several years, local professional musician Jon E. Gee has been touring as bass guitarist in John Mellencamp’s band, and when not on tour, he has been offering serious musicians coaching and career advice along with bass guitar lessons. Many of you may remember Jon’s early location which was called Jon E. Gee’s Music Room. Now Jon operates his Carmel Music Academy at 13295 N. Illinois in Carmel. Gee just finished a long 80-city tour with Mellencamp and has made the decision to take his

Carmel Music Academy in a bit of new direction. Gee, along with his wife who goes by the name Mrs. Gee (a name given to her by Mellencamp’s accountant when Jon first joined the band), are expanding the types of instruction being offered at the Carmel Music Academy and have added six instructors and a studio coordinator. In addition to Jon’s bass guitar lessons, the Carmel Music Academy plans to offer lessons in guitar, piano, voice, drums, mandolin, banjo and violin. While Jon will still provide lessons to serious bass guitar players, the Academy will have instruction available to children as a young as 6 years old and to senior citizens. Recently, the Carmel Music Academy had a Grand Opening, ribbon cutting and Open House to celebrate their new business direction. It was a great time to meet a local music legend and tour their new state-of– the-art teaching rooms.

A visit or stay in a hospital tends to be a stressful and undesirable visit for any adult, and the affect upon a child can be even more traumatic. When a child expresses their discomfort by crying or acting out, it not only raises the child’s level of anxiety but also is distressing to the parent(s), caregivers and attending staff who is attempting treatment. There are a plethora of studies available that show how Distraction Therapy can reduce pain and therefore reduces the patients discomfort throughout the necessary procedure. At the invitation of Dr. Charles (Chuck) Dietzen, I recently made a few trips to the Riley Hospital for Children to visit Dr. Dietzen’s wing specifically and to learn more about a premiere project focusing on a revolutionary method of Distraction Therapy that is currently underway in the Pediatric Oncology Rehabilitation unit. “The old adage that ‘Coincidence is when God winks’ is my favorite way of explaining why people meet at the time that they do,” Dr. Dietzen explained. “I met the artist Jim Nash, whose company has partnered with us on this project, through a mutual friend. I was told that I needed to meet Jim and check out what his company Dreamakür was doing in other areas of the country. “I saw the potential for really great synergy and contacted Jim about the vision that I had for our unit at Riley. I had come back to Riley Hospital for Children to build a world-class pediatric rehab center, and utilizing my global connections that I’ve built over the last several years, make our unit the premier global center where people in our industry can learn to care for children patients all over the world. We have an outstanding staff who are developing programs and implementing these programs here at Riley.” It is Dr. Dietzen’s goal to transform the sparsely decorated and out-of-date wing that his patients are currently housed in into

a world-class, revitalizing and magical unit for his patients to recover and rebuild their lives in. “Visual Distraction Therapy incorporated with the sensory integration component of therapy that we do in rehab is what we are all excited about,” Dr. Dietzen expressed. “We are limited on space, and we want to create a better sense of community for our kids and get them out of their patient rooms. We need to enhance the hallways and common areas in addition to the therapy rooms. What makes our concept so unique is that we want to make the walls atCarmel.com / SEPTEMBER 2015 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 13

interactive.” The age range of patients that Dr. Dietzen and his staff work with spans from infant age to 18 years old. Their challenge was to create something that would benefit all ages and is beneficial to patients’ rehabilitation therapy. “Part of the therapy is ‘cause and effect,’ so for example having a child turning the mural’s street lights on and off, making the wheels turn or making the butterflies’ wings flap are important cognitive skills, and it motivates the child to use their fine and

gross motor skills,” Dr. Dietzen emphasized. “It becomes an active part of the child’s therapy.” During visits back to the unit, I was able to see the first of hopefully many installations in the unit’s main entry hallway. The once drab and dreary hallway had been transformed into a whimsical wonderland, portraying children of all ages and abilities, playing in parks, competing in sports and even enjoying a peppermint lollipop that was anointed with real peppermint oil to increase alertness and ease tension upon smelling it. The images show children who have learned to overcome their challenges and reengage with life.

who is recovering, regardless of their illness and or injury.” The rooms that Dr. Dietzen would like to see receive these treatments would include all of their therapy rooms and the common areas, including the connecting hallways. The cost to wrap a room is approximately $15,000. Nash’s company, Dreamakür, has donated $32,000 to date, and they have

wrapped the entry hallway, main corridor intersection and supporting columns. The prize jewel of the project so far is the custom-designed “Wheel-In Movie Theatre” that is a mockup of an old drive-in theatre but depicts children cruising in their wheelchairs to enjoy their favorite flicks and movie treats. I met with the artist behind these visions,

“The work has only just begun,” Dr. Dietzen said. “We currently have fireworks in our mural, and we are going to install LED lights so that they look as though they are going off into the sky. Having worked with this program for several years, I am thrilled to have the EPIC Program through Purdue University come out and help us design and build out these special functions into our murals. “The EPIC program is an outstanding elective program for engineering college students that focuses on helping us, so that we can help children with disabilities. They have done some really cool stuff for us in other places, and we are excited to have them on board with us for this project. These engineering students will take their mechanical, biomedical, electrical and civil engineering degrees and apply their knowledge and creativity to this project. “Our unit will be the first of its kind globally,” Dr. Dietzen said. “We have done sensory integration walls in the past, but we hand painted them, limiting us on what we could do with them. Now, thanks to Jim Nash and his company, we are able to take images that are created on a computer and apply them to a wall, giving us nearly unlimited potential to take this Visual Distraction Therapy and turn it into a multi-sensory experience for a child

Artwork at Riley Hospital by Jim Nash.

Jim Nash, who graciously flew in to meet with me and share his motivation to create this beautiful imagery. “I want to spread and offer these services to hospitals all over the country,” Nash humbly explained. “I enjoy working with Dr. Chuck. He’s a very special guy that does a lot of great things for people, and it was an honor to meet him and work with him. “I started out as a graphic designer here in Indianapolis, near Whitestown, Indiana. My boss moved to Pittsburgh to start a new company, Endograph, in 1992, and I moved out there to be a part of that. Three years ago, we started Dreamakür which specializes in hospital imagery.” Nash’s calling became clear to him after being hired to transform a patient room in the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh who had originally requested walls decals and something to cover the one window that looked out onto a graveyard. The end result was that Nash had created a translucent film that would wrap the room, covering but not extinguishing the natural light, and had created a Martian theme simulating the colors and visions of Mars. This escalated into Nash being commissioned to completing 65 rooms, paid for by fundraising and their local philanthropic community. The murals are guaranteed and have a 10year warranty. Each installation is a floorto-ceiling application that is completely covered with an overlaminate. All of the materials are eco-friendly and protect the inks and colors from sterilization and use of chlorine, alcohol and other cleaning

“Recently, I had the great fortune to make the acquaintance of Dr. Chuck Dietzen. Dr. Dietzen has dedicated his professional life to treating and caring for the most vulnerable in our midst. He has touched lives not only at Riley Children’s Hospital but also at numerous places across the world. The Rotary Club of Carmel looks forward to assisting Dr. Dietzen in his work and would urge other Rotarians to join in our efforts.” The difference between solid hospital decor and colorful artwork in children’s area.

compounds. “It makes me feel good to be able to do something like this, and I believe that it is my purpose in life,” Nash concluded. “When I am able to witness a child’s frown turn upside down because of something that I was able to create for them, it means the world to me.” Dr. Dietzen and his staff gratefully acknowledged the organizations that they are currently working with to garner financial support and awareness of this remarkable undertaking. They credit their partnerships with Dreamakür, the EPIC Program and the Riley Children’s Foundation where there is an established Rehab Fund that supports Dr. Dietzen’s unit for the incoming support and interest is that being generated surrounding their wing’s transportation into a world-class center. He also credited the Rotary Club of Carmel for their support and advocacy. The Rotary Club of Carmel’s president Brian G. Poindexter spoke about the Rotary’s assistance to Dr. Dietzen’s project. “I am very proud to call myself a Rotarian,” Poindexter said. “All across the world, Rotarians, with the support of the Rotary Foundation, work together to save young lives and improve children’s health. The Rotary Foundation enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

build our nonprofit and be competitive. We strive to find ways to stand out and still provide unique services. “One of our strategies is to develop and maintain strong corporate sponsorships that are looking to reach and assist communities that really are underserved. Companies like Bastian Solutions, American Structurepoint and the Indianapolis Colts organization have stepped in and offered not only financial contributions, but we will open up their businesses and give our scholars access with experiential learning trips where the students will learn about different jobs and job skills that are available to them. This allows our kids to dream beyond their circumstances.” Support from the local businesses is essential in sustaining organizations like DREAM Alive, and the business partners that support DREAM Alive engage because they share a philosophy with the

organization that the community’s youth is a community’s future. For example, Bastian Solutions will hire students from within the DREAM Alive program and place them in jobs within their corporation. In addition to the business community’s support, the DREAM Alive organization recognizes the importance of having positive mentors on board to work with and help raise up their scholars.

at Sullivan’s Steakhouse in Indianapolis. An annual event since 2004, Wishing on Stars was first hosted by former Indianapolis Colts Tight End Marcus Pollard. Fellow Colts players, Indiana Pacers, Indy 500 drivers and other local celebrities are expected to attend the event.

Dwayne Allen, Player Executive for DREAM Alive, has stepped into a leadership role within the organization to assist with Glenn’s mission. Allen, tight end for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, is making an impact in the lives of Indianapolis at-risk youth. Allen serves not only as the professional face of the organization but also participates in program development and implementation. “I grew up in the inner city of Fayetteville, North Carolina,” Allen said. “My story resonates so well with the children that we impact at DREAM Alive. I spend every opportunity that I get to spend with our kids. I see so much of myself in each and every one of them. I didn’t have anyone to look up to or have someone who looked like me, who came from similar situations as me, trying to inspire me. That is why I am passionate about wanting the kids to want more in their lives. “I want them to understand that regardless of where you come from, how you were raised or who you were raised by, you can’t allow your circumstances to dictate who you who are or who you want to be. That’s what our mission is all about. We educate the kids and provide resources and knowledge, so that they can go and be successful in their lives.” Allen will host the annual Wishing on Stars benefit on Monday, September 14 TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2015 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

The evening will feature a cocktail reception, followed by celebrity introductions, dinner and a silent and live auction. The players and other celebrities are willing to sign autographs, serve cocktails, personalize voicemails, perform guests’ favorite songs and spend time with attendees in a relaxed, enjoyable private environment of 150-200 guests.

In addition to Allen, numerous fellow Colts players are expected to attend. Past attendees include Glenn, Pat McAfee, Tamika Catchings, Anthony Castanzo, T.Y. Hilton, Coby Fleener, Matt Hasselbeck, Dallas Clark, Peyton Manning, David Thornton, Jeff Saturday, Ken Dilger, Roy Hibbert, Reggie Wayne, Marcus Pollard, Bob Sanders, Joseph Addai, Gary Brackett, Marlin Jackson,

Robert Mathis, Chris Lytle and more. “This event is our largest fundraiser for DREAM Alive, and all of the resources that are collected go directly towards the kids and to supply our DREAM coaches with resources that they need to impact their lives,” Allen explained. “Businesses can donate monetarily, and that helps to supply the necessary resources, but what

is most costly to the businesses and is most cherished by DREAM Alive is the organization’s time. “By them opening their doors to our programs so that we can take the kids to different businesses around Indianapolis and around the state, we can expose the kids to things outside of the inner city. Little by little, this begins to break down the barriers of their world. We take them for walks around university campuses or to a business like WTHR or a military base to expose them,so that they can begin to dream bigger. “As we continue to grow and obtain more funding, we can expand our reach and develop a model that is replicable in cities throughout the country. Our goal is to replicate the programs in all NFL host cities and team up with players from those teams who will then engage their local school corporations. “Here in Indianapolis, we want to expand in all IPS schools and surrounding areas, so that we can serve the underserved and fill in the gaps, so that no child falls in between. We want to see all children have opportunities to resources that they need to become successful adults. Ultimately, that is how it should be.” For more information about the DREAM Alive, visit dreamaliveinc.org.

Amidst the bustle of a thriving Hamilton County in 1915, Cassius M. Gentry and Frank S. Campbell opened the doors of their law firm, Gentry and Campbell. Their firm handled a variety of cases, ranging from property disputes, business contract negotiations, trial court and estate matters. Hamilton Circuit Court Judge Ernest E. Cloe joined the firm after the end of his term in 1921, resulting in the first of many name changes for the firm over the decades, to Gentry, Cloe and Campbell. In 1939, Frank W. Campbell joined his father and Cloe’s firm. The novice attorney, just weeks

after joining the firm, was hired by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company which bought a plant in Noblesville. Over the century, the lawyers of what is today Campbell Kyle Proffitt LLP, have represented a myriad of notable clients and newsworthy cases. In the early 1940s, the discovery of an abandoned car in a field allotted Frank W. Campbell a brief interlude with the ghost of the notorious outlaw, John Dillinger. Gunned down in 1934, Dillinger’s exploits and criminal activity had one particular insurance company, United States Fidelity and Guaranty, looking for restitution from Dillinger’s estate. The insurance company atCarmel.com / SEPTEMBER 2015 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 25

had insured several of the banks that Dillinger robbed. The abandoned car was registered to a Carl Helman, a known alias of Dillinger. Campbell opened an estate in Helman’s name, and the court appointed him administrator. He listed the car as Helman’s only asset and sold it for $5,000 to settle the estate. In 1940, the firm was hired by former Ku Klux Klan grand dragon D.C. Stephenson who was serving a life-sentence after being convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Madge Oberholtzer in 1925. The original trial took place in Noblesville, placing an undesirable national spotlight on the city. Upon exhaustion of all available appeals by 1940, Stephenson hired the firm

The members of the firm have and continue to this day to place a strong emphasis on community service throughout Hamilton County. The Noblesville Boys’ Club opened in 1953, and Frank W. Campbell was its first president. He, like his father before him, felt compelled to give back to the community that provided them with business and support over the years, a principle that is still emphasized in the firm today. John Kyle joined the firm in 1955, prompting another name change to Campbell, Campbell, Malan and Kyle. In 1958, Kyle was named Young Man of the Year by the Noblesville Junior Chamber of Commerce. to prepare and present a petition for a new trial. Campbell spent a good part of a year preparing and meeting with Stephenson, only to be dismissed by him. Stephenson had hopes of a deal with the governor for a pardon that would later fail to come to fruition. Stephenson would be later paroled but never received a pardon. Other cases of interest that the firm was involved in were the desegregation cases in the 1970s in what could have ordered the busing of students across county lines to achieve desegregation. More modern cases include the Baumeister case (Fox

Hollow Farm/serial killer case). Attorney Bill Wendling represented Baumeister’s estranged wife. Last year’s right to die/ feeding tube/living will case represented by the firm’s current managing partner, Anne Hensley Poindexter, earned national attention and a mention by USA Today. As the years went on, C.V. Malan joined the firm in 1952, making it Campbell, Campbell and Malan. It has been written that he was known as much for his “gregariousness as for his legal prowess.” He was an accomplished trumpet player and performed in a trio along with his partner, Frank W. Campbell, who played trombone. The partners and their attorneys were not 26 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2015 / atCarmel.com

Founding member Frank S. Campbell published his book, “The Story of Hamilton County,” in 1962 as his final contribution to his community. He passed away two years later. Lebanon native John Proffitt had moved from Kansas City, Missouri, where he had been practicing law to Noblesville and joined the firm. He is a past-president of the Indiana State Bar Association and is the chair of the firm’s Civil Litigation Practice Group. He and his wife, Judy, moved their residence to Carmel in 1968. Campbell’s son, Robert Campbell, joined the firm in 1971 and set up permanent operations in Carmel where he was accompanied by his receptionist Dottie Hancock who went on to become the mayor of Carmel in 1988.

Proffitt began practicing full-time in the firm’s Carmel office in 1984. It was located on Carmel Drive in the INB building prior to its current location in the One Penn Mark building on North Meridian Street. Today Campbell Kyle Proffitt LLP maintains a long-standing tradition of excellence, community service and a reputation for their personal connection between their lawyers and their clients. Several of their attorneys are AV Preeminent rated by the MartindaleHubbell peer review rating system, the highest rating for legal ability and ethical standards. Managing partner Anne Hensley Poindexter is a Carmel native and resident. She resides in Carmel with her husband, the Honorable Brian G. Poindexter, along with their daughter. Poindexter was elected as the Managing Partner in 2014. She earned her undergraduate from Ball State University and her law degree from Indiana University. She is the firm’s third managing partner in its 100-year history.

Proven expertise for uncertain markets.

“My mother will tell you that I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer when I was only 5 years old,” Poindexter said. “The most rewarding part of my vocation is helping people that are in crisis or have a problem and solving that problem to help them move past their situation. Our firm continues to place emphasis on the founding principles with unwavering commitment to community service and quality legal services. “We focus on the mentorship and development of our more novice associates and offer training with more tenured associates and partners. They are able to develop their own styles and techniques, so that they can be comfortable and present themselves effectively. No one lawyer tries a case the same way each time. Our firm invests in our new associates, so that we can continue to build on our tradition of excellence.”

Proffitt concluded with his personal insight about the essence of his firm, “I have always felt that if you care about your client(s) and do a good job, then you will succeed, and your firm will also succeed. Individuals whose primary focus is on making money lose sight of how you really make your living, and that is by taking care of people. I don’t think that as a lawyer, anything gives you more pleasure than having your past clients come up to you, years later, and thank you for what you did for them. It truly just warms you all over.” Campbell Kyle Proffitt LLP celebrated their 100 year anniversary on August 13, 2015, on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse in downtown Noblesville. Several founding partners’ family members and relatives were present. Current politicians and dignitaries were also in attendance, and the Mayor of Noblesville, John Ditslear, made a proclamation honoring the firm’s dedication to service and centurion anniversary.

THE CARR FAMILY KEEPS CLIMBING! Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Phil Carr

It all started over a decade ago inside a Galyan’s store when the girls saw the huge climbing wall. Megan Carr’s older sister, Kate, sprang to the top of the wall with ease. An employee commented that she should cultivate her natural abilities in a climbing gym. Kate excelled and soon began competing in the youth national series governed by USA climbing, and little sister Megan wasn’t far behind. Being four years younger, Megan enjoyed going to the gyms and competitions with her sister. It was evident that Megan possessed the same talent and skills as her sister.

For the competition of climbing, there are three categories of events. The first is called Sport which involves wearing a harness and rope and is based on how high you can climb a difficult route. The second type is called Bouldering, where climbers don’t need a harness or rope, and typically only climb about 15 or 20 feet up over mats. This involves amazing strength and mimics climbing out of a steep cave (think Spiderman). The third event is Speed where climbers race against the clock and each other on a slightly overhung route that is nearly 50 feet tall. “Speed climbing is done on a 15m wall with the wall being standard around the world,” shares Megan, who trains at Hoosier Heights climbing gym in Carmel. Megan’s fastest time to scale the wall is 10.25 seconds. Hoosier Heights has a 10 meter version which she has climbed in under six seconds.

one. “Climbing is huge in Europe, and we hope to see it become an Olympic sport in the next decade. Go Team USA! In order to compete at the Youth World Championships in Arco, Italy, Megan earned her spot on the U.S. National Team in Atlanta in July. For additional information,

Both girls have competed internationally with Kate traveling to France for the World Championships, and this year will be Megan’s third trip to the Worlds. “When I watched my sister earn a spot on the U.S. Team and compete in the Worlds in France, it motivated me to train really hard to make it,” shares Megan. “I’ve competed in Singapore, Canada, and this year Italy, which will be my last as a U18-19 competitor. After this year, I compete as an adult,” says Megan, who won the 2014 U.S. Open Speed Climbing championship in the adult category when she was 17 years old. Older sister Kate now climbs for fun and is in her second year of medical school at Marian University. Megan is a sophomore at IU studying accounting. As a family, the Carrs have enjoyed the competition climbing circuit. “It’s been a great community of other families with similar interests,” shares dad Phil. “We’ve taken outdoor trips for climbing and really had fun with it.” Climbing is not yet an Olympic sport, but there is a huge push for it to become

ST. GEORGE MIDDLE EASTERN FESTIVAL The St. George Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19 for the second time at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 10748 E. 116th St. in Fishers. The church sponsored the Middle Eastern Festival for 17 years at its prior location in Indianapolis, and the newly revamped festival builds on that Middle Eastern heritage, offering many popular features of previous events. “We’re still celebrating our Middle Eastern roots, but at the same time, we’re expanding the format,” explains Brad Tirey, festival director. “In the past, it’s been just food, drinks and dance. We are adding other activities, demonstrations, cultural events and more attractions for youth, including hot air balloons and a carnival area.”

Why change the name of the festival? Parish priest Father Nabil Hanna says, “We want to honor the various other traditions of all the people who have joined and make up St. George today. We are extremely diverse. We have people of backgrounds from many countries across the world.” What’s different about this festival? “Two things,” says Father Nabil. “One is that it’s at our new location on 116th Street with a new Byzantine temple and beautiful iconography. The Indianapolis Star called it ‘the number one thing to see or do in Fishers this summer.’ We are inviting everybody to come and celebrate with us.” Tours will explain the church’s unique architecture by award-winning Architect

Christ Kamages, as well as iconography that was hand painted on the walls and ceiling by Master Iconographer Dr. George Kordis of the University of Athens, Greece. “Secondly, we are trying to make the festival a little more interactive; not to just come, buy food and sit down with music playing in the background. You are able to move around, see different things, different demonstrations, try out different things while you are here,” explains Father Nabil. What’s going to be the same as previous festivals? “Fantastic food, live entertainment and all of the welcoming people of St. George who want our guests to see what we’re about,” says Tirey. “We hope to continue the spirit of hospitality for which we have become known.”

ABOUT ST. GEORGE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHURCH St. George Orthodox Church was established in 1926 and ministers to Orthodox Christians of a great diversity of backgrounds. It is a parish of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America. After worshipping together for more than 50 years at its prior location on Sherman Drive, the parish purchased land in Fishers and built a new Byzantine-style church building. St. George’s congregation began worshipping in their new facilities in November 2013 and held the official door opening ceremony in May 2014. “Last year was our very first festival in Fishers,” says Father Nabil. “We were still getting accustomed to the new location, but we were very happy to be receiving all of our guests. This year, we will be making it even better”
