THE 12TH ANNUAL GUILDED LEAF BOOK & AUTHOR LUNCHEON Writer / Janelle Morrison
The Guild of the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation will proudly host its Writers at the Pavilion evening event on Wednesday, October 19 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Ritz Charles Garden Pavilion and the 12th Annual Guilded Leaf Book and Author luncheon on Thursday, October 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Ritz Charles in Carmel. The Writers at the Pavilion and the Guilded Leaf Book and Author Luncheon are annual fundraising events that support the programs offered by the Carmel Clay Public Library. The Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation Guild was formed in 2004 by Donna Adams, Marianne Brocke, Mimi Brookie, Julianne Hunter, Karee Petruzzi, Jan Stanich, Karen Vanneman and retired foundation director Ruth Nisenshal to assist with developing and hosting a signature fundraising event for the benefit of the Library. The Guilded Leaf Book and Author Luncheon is a popular and engaging event for its attendees and its guest authors.
The Carmel Clay Director Elizabeth (Liz) Hamilton credits the Guild for their dedication and extraordinary efforts in organizing these two events. “The Guild is an amazing group of volunteers who value the library and what the library does for our community,” Hamilton said. “Out of the goodness of their hearts, they have the willingness to be an event arm of the foundation. This is their way to give back to the Carmel community and to the library to make sure that we can continue to offer the depth of programming that we can. While the library is funded by tax dollars, there is no way to sustain the depth of our programs with tax dollars alone. Last year, we had just over 1,700 programs that we offered to the community. “The Guild works all year long planning these two events to raise as much money as they can to support the library’s programs. This year, the Guild started the Visiting Authors Series that they host at the library. It has been very successful and people are enjoying it. I support the Guild in any way I am able to help them be successful,

Last year’s outstanding group of authors
working on the various pieces that make up the events, such as selecting the guest authors, ordering copies of the authors’ books to be sold at both events, organizing the silent auction and several other tasks leading up to, prior to and during the events. “We invite authors that are releasing new books just prior to our events and want to be able to offer hardback versions of their books for sale. We invite authors representing different genres to have something that appeals to everyone, and of course we have to have authors who are willing to come here and donate their time to speak with our guests. When we explain to the authors that we host these events to support the library, we find that many of them grew up in libraries, and it was their love of books and writing that led them to become authors, so they often jump at the opportunity to give back to local libraries.”
but they really are the driving force and the ones working in the trenches to make these events successful and enjoyable.” The Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation Guild President Ginny Purvis is immensely proud of the 90 volunteers that work as a conglomerate to host the two upcoming events. “We, the Guild, could not exist without the overwhelming support and time of all our volunteers. [We] have 90 … volunteers who all have different skills and talents,” Purvis said. “We have committees
Purvis and her family moved around a great deal due to her husband’s career, and she said that the first thing that she and her children would do would be to get their library cards from the local library. Only then would they feel that they were a part of their community. “I actually got my library card before we even had our house here in Carmel,” Purvis said. “I was just so excited to be a part of this community, and it was a way for me to get involved and meet new people. My kids used it as resource when they were in high school and would walk across the street all the time with their study groups. We, as a family, are huge readers, and it was just a way for all

of us to get involved. “This year, we are looking forward to hosting for the second year the Writers at the Pavilion evening event at the Ritz Charles Garden Pavilion. We added the event last year as a way to broaden our demographic. The same authors are present and speak for a shorter period of time but are able to socialize with the guests a little more than at the luncheon. The evening is more of a cocktail/social event that appeals to younger adults and couples.
Approximately 150 people attended that evening and enjoyed a wine auction, art auction, craft beers and an opportunity to purchase copies of the authors’ books. “The next day, guests can expect to hear the authors speak for 15-20 minutes about their books and their experiences while enjoying lunch at the Ritz Charles. The authors’ presentations will be different from what they will discuss at the event the night before. We are very excited to be hosting both of these events again. Ultimately, our

Bob Nichols was a visionary who knew that in America, dreams can come true if you work hard and never give up! When he got out of the Marine Corps in 1958, he had no car, no money and some would say no future. What he did have was a dream of being successful, and the willpower to make it happen. He borrowed ten dollars from his mother and with the help of Orville “Ducky” Love, an Indianapolis car dealer who sold him a car, a Curtis key machine, some key code books, and keys on credit, he was in business. Mr. Love asked him to cut 18 keys at a dollar each and became his first customer. Bob wentup and down Virginia Avenue cutting keys and repairing locks all day long. His most frequent customer was Ed Clark, who was known as the used car king of east Washington Street. Mr. Clark would call Bob every morning and then he’d call him back all day long. Finally, Bob said “Ed, I’m coming back so much all day long, I’m losing money.” Clark replied, “You should charge me a service call charge when you come to cover your costs of making a trip. How about you charge me a $3.50 trip charge?” With that, Bob was on his way. Bob’s
TEN DOLLARS AND A DREAM B
son Mike started working for the company when he was 12, cutting keys and delivering them on his motorbike. Bob’s business grew so much that he opened his first shop on Shelby Street. Business really took off and his customers were impressed with his knowledge of locksmithing and safe repair. As the business grew, he and his son ran service all over the city and surrounding areas. Bob adopted his slogan “Don’t get robbed, call Bob!” and the company still uses it to this day. Bob and Mr. Maurice Bornman, who owned Bornman Safe and Lock, were instrumental in forming the first locksmith association in Indiana, the Associated Locksmiths of Greater Indiana, ALOGI. Mr. Bornman was the first vice president and Bob was the first president from 1972 to 1974. After a series of moves to larger and larger locations, Bob and Mike later opened a shop at 5631 Madison Avenue in 1981. The store featured a vehicle bay, a warehouse, and two safe showrooms. Bob later left the lock shop in the capable hands of Mike while he moved to Sevierville, Tennessee. When he got to Sevierville, he started the Golden Carat jewelry store and Nichols Properties and INDY METRO / SEPTEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com
became a successful real estate developer. His first love was always the lock shop. In 2013 Bob learned that he had cancer. Mike came to visit and later died unexpectedly in July of 2013. Bob came back to Indianapolis to attend his funeral. Bob died three months later. The business was closed for several months and many thought that the dream had died with the passing of Bob and his son Mike. Bob Nichols
Tim Young, Bob’s youngest son (who had worked in the business as a teenager) purchased the business in 2013, buying a new location at 5651 Madison Avenue (two doors down from the one that Bob and Mike built) and opening a second location in Fishers at 8240 E. 96th Street, in front of the Walmart. Tim has expanded the staff to 10 and has introduced many technological innovations into the business, such as GPS dispatching of service vehicles, as well as adding additional capabilities to the company’s product and service offerings, such as access control products. For 58 years Bob’s Master Safe and Lock Service has provided the best security hardware and services for homes and businesses at a great price. Each location offers many types of safes, and the company’s website offers an online safe store where customers can get free shipping on safes. Safe combination changing and safe opening are also offered.
In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.
The company is also proud to offer restricted key systems from Abloy, DOM and Medeco….with these patent protected systems, only Bob’s can cut the key, and only the customer can authorize the key to be made, saving the customer the expense of rekeying locks when employees are terminated or keys loaned out. The company can make the transponder chip and laser cut keys that are on the new cars, as well as make keys by VIN for most vehicles at both locations. The company also sells and services designer door hardware from EMTEK in both stores. And of course, they still offer rekeying and key duplication services both in their stores and in their trucks. Tim’s goal is to continue Bob’s vision of treating customers as family and providing the best possible products and services at the best prices, keeping Bob’s dream a reality for generations to come!

WHO DO YOU CALL WHEN YOUR ACHING BACK IS TELLING YOU TO SEE A DOCTOR? IU HEALTH NORTH’S NEW SPINE PROGRAM FOCUSES ON CONSERVATIVE CARE OF ACUTE AND RECURRING BACK PAIN patients in need of services for acute and recurring back or neck pain,” says Sheldon Weiss, MD, MHCM, Chief Strategy Officer for IU Health’s North Central Region (IU Health North Hospital in Carmel, IU Health Saxony Hospital in Fishers and IU Health Tipton Hospital). “What sets us apart from other spine centers in the area is how prompt you’ll have access to our clinicians.”
With 80 percent of Hoosiers experiencing acute or recurring back pain at some point, Indiana University Health North Hospital recently launched its new Spine Program with a focus on conservative care of back and neck pain. Studies show that people who pursue more conservative treatment for back pain tend to have fewer complications
than those who end up rushing into MRIs, X-rays, epidural injections, narcotics and even spine surgery long before truly necessary. “We developed the IU Health North Spine Program to provide coordinated care through a multidisciplinary approach for 14 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK / SEPTEMBER 2016
The Spine Program at IU Health North allows patients to self-refer by calling the center directly. Within 24 hours, a Spine Program Navigator will conduct an initial triage assessment via phone and schedule the patient with a spine program physiatrist or refer them back to their primary care provider. Physiatrist appointments usually take place within two to three business days, and imaging is not required before seeing a clinician. Patients of the IU Health North Spine Program are under the care of an IUHP physiatrist – or a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) physician who treats a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and

include low back pain alone or with the radicular pain that goes down the legs,” says Tiffany Thacker, FNP-BC, RN, BSN, IU Health North’s Spine Program Coordinator. “Conservative care typically starts with physical therapy. It is most appropriate for the patient that has had
As a general rule, surgery for back pain is considered only after conservative treatments have failed, and the pain persists over an extended period of time. Dr. Weiss stresses, “We’re not looking at all patients as a spine surgical patient. We’re looking at them with an injury to their back that needs to be treated.”

CHATEAU KITCHENS
Families live in their kitchens. It is a place where memories are made and bonding happens. Bob Moore, owner of Chateau Kitchens knows kitchens are a special gathering place and strives to provide a positive experience for his clients. “ Most people get totally overwhelmed with all of the choices available,” Bob says. “My designers have personality, connect immediately with customers and are really talented at pulling colors together.” According to Bob, remodels are huge. “There are thousands of homes in Hamilton County that are in desperate need of remodeling. We don’t just focus on kitchens, we can rework any space in any home. Big decorative showers with lots of glass are in. Corner Jacuzzi tubs are out.” After decades in the industry, Bob admits he can walk into a home and pretty estimate the costs of desired updates. “We do a lot of work, drawings, 3D design and estimates before we even charge a dime.” Chateau Kitchens will complete about 150 projects this year. Even so, Bob knows it is crucial to educate people about budgets, quality and the ability to turn designs around quickly in order to meet the demands and timeline requirement of customers.
HOUSEWURKS OF ZIONSVILLE
Feeling the pain of a diving market, small home builder, Jim Barber took a break from the housing industry. However, he recognized that Zionsville’s new build lots were limited and many older homes could not be sold, torn down or renovated. Fortunately, Barber found opportunities that reflected his urge to address a niche market that realized remodeling could be more costeffective than building a new home.
Jim Barber, Housewurks
“We don’t like to do total teardowns, but want to use the foundation of the existing home intact in order to build a more up to date attractive house. We take significant issues that require a lot of work and turn them into an attractive architectural structure that is pleasing to the eye. In September 2015, Barber started looking for homes that required extensive work, remodeling and flipping them. “We did barebones renovations where we took designs down to the studs, changed floor plans and created functional homes.”

MARVELOUS WOODWORKING
Doug Marvel, owner of Marvelous Woodworking, is a third generation woodworker with a passion for crafting custom designs that fit into existing architectural features. “We try to match the look of the current space to employ functional designs, old or new, taking in visual clues to determine aesthetically pleasing results.”
“Spruce up your home.” That mantra is what sets Catherine Strong’s design talent and services apart from the competition. Not only, does she make sure her clients get the best price for their window coverings, she adds in personal attention to detail and excellent customer service.
Doug explains, he witnesses many homeowners desire to redo staircases by taking out wood balusters and replacing those with wrought iron, a practice that is currently trending. So many styles, from traditional to shakerstyle to contemporary, multiple conversions and trends pave the way for Doug to create unique products in a niche market to promote his diverse services. Doug explains that his shop works with a plethora of talented designers, architects, homeowners and renovators to design high quality, built in furniture that “solves issues that daunt others.” According to Doug, “If someone tells me it cannot be done, then we find a way to do what what the customer wants.”
“Some people want privacy and others want a desirable look,” Catherine explains. “I can visit a house and tell what people need. We have hard products such as blinds provided by Allure in Lafayette or shutters that offer a more upscale, classic look.” A small family owned business, the company employs several in a local workroom producing draperies from scratch. “I visit homes daily to measure windows and my installer, part of the family, is totally focused on installing for our customers.”
M/I HOMES
The latest products and consumer desires are always a critical factor in inspiring today’s homeowner to move to something new. Some examples of the latest styles are more open kitchens with painted cabinets, furniture like islands with striking solid surface countertops, subway tile backsplashes, distressed wood or tile type flooring, large open walk in showers with exquisite tile work, waterfall and multiple shower head designs, and multi-functional spaces from bonus rooms to in-law quarters. These are just a few important details that Jarrod Klein, Regional VP of M/I Homes shares, but there is more: “Our green features are the result of our relentless pursuit of the ultimate, energy efficient home. We wrap every home in a weathertight envelope. We seal every seam and caulk every crevasse. We have each home independently rated to certify the energy savings. For an M/I home, our homeowners save up to 30% over the cost of a home built to standard code. Our ratings even beat Energy Star targets. As a part of our commitment to quality, M/I uses 2”x 6” exterior wall construction, Zip Board, and multiple other industry leading construction practices with an end result of the strongest warranty commitment in the business…a 15 Year Transferable Structural Warranty.” 20 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK / SEPTEMBER 2016

THE HENKES A FAMILY DEVELOPING A HOME FOR OTHER FAMILIES
Writer / Stephanie Carlson Miller Contributor / Adriana Rich
Lush rolling terrain, peppered with bountiful woodlands and trickling creeks that weave through spacious farmlands, have been passed down through eight generations, naturally creating a place to preserve history, discover futures and create traditions. Looking beyond the pastures of these Westfield family farms, Steve Henke, a Carmel attorney and developer, envisioned a residential community that “embraces and preserves” history and the gifts provided by Mother Nature for future generations. After years of buying properties and formulating plans, Chatham Hills was born. “As farms became available, we purchased them. We recognize that many of the farms are owned by families whose ancestors lived and worked the land,” 24 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK / SEPTEMBER 2016
visited job sites and employed them during the summer months. “I never pushed the kids but did give them a variety of jobs working with the organization, tossing them bits and pieces of what it takes to run a business.” Steve wanted his children to develop a good sense of self and appreciate their talents. Working with him was an extra bonus. He recalls teaching Betsy to parallel park at The Bridgewater Club, a country club community he developed in Westfield on the southwest corner of Carey Road and 161st Street, and turning over a big responsibility for her to handle on her own. “Betsy designed, developed and built the playground at Bridgewater.” And he chuckles at the memory of Brad cleaning debris out of a pond on the golf course at Bridgewater. “His boss was the maintenance director, so Brad had a variety of jobs like cleaning sump pumps, painting the basement and cleaning up debris.” Steve adds, “Brad even worked in the kitchen making salads.”
Steve says. “We respect their heritage, and we are maintaining the integrity of these family stories.” Incidentally, Steve invited his daughter, Betsy Garfield, and son, Brad Henke, to join his team in developing an 800-acre property – a choice that perpetuates his own family story. “Dad is the best mentor I have ever worked with,” Betsy affirms, flashing a smile at her father. “He has handed me a lot of responsibility, and that has led to exposure in so many areas I would not have had the opportunity to experience otherwise. He has a high level of expectation for me and my brother.” Betsy attended Carmel High School and graduated from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business with the notable achievement of being student body president. Upon graduation, she worked as an investment banker at JPMorgan Chase
in Chicago where her clients included homebuilders. Two years later, she returned to Carmel armed with experience and enthusiasm to join her father’s firm, Henke Development Group. According to Brad, who is two years younger, “My sister and father were already working together, and when I finished college, I knew it would be an amazing opportunity to work with them.” Holding a degree from IU’s Kelley School of Business and competitive skills gained playing baseball for the Hoosiers, he stepped up to the plate bringing his best friend and classmate, Doug Fleenor, along to solidify the team. Brad says that he doesn’t believe in job titles, and that together with Doug and Betsy, “they are all equal parts to the whole, and one is just as important as the other.” When the siblings were youngsters, Steve took them when he looked at properties and SEPTEMBER 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK / 25
The trio wear many hats. While Betsy is far more involved in the financial aspect and implementing creative marketing campaigns, Brad is very sales-oriented. He takes care of customers interested in the home plots and the commercial properties. But all agree, there is a lot of responsibility that overlaps, and they have a good mix of compatible skill sets, strengths and abilities. Akin to Frick and Frack, Betsy and Brad have found respect for each other, like spending time together outside of the office and enjoy their successes together. Growing up the small town of Holland, population 500, in southern Indiana, Steve never dreamed that he would be creating special places that families would call home and offering peaceful, amenityfilled lifestyles. As a young lawyer, his firm grew quickly, and he needed more space. He purchased land from the owner of the Carmel Racquet Club along Carmel Drive where he developed and build his first commercial property. Following that initial experience, he moved on to a few small residential and commercial developments while still working as a corporate lawyer.
“Back then, I started looking for properties that would be prime for development in three to five years. During lunchtime, I would grab a sandwich and sit at an intersection making checkmarks to count the traffic. I would check the same place a year later and try to anticipate growth and trends,” he explains. That perseverance, research and patience paid off. Henke Development Group has been on the cutting edge of cultivating and establishing premiere communities in Hamilton County over the last decade. The firm provides services that include the “acquisition and disposition of real estate, capital formation, zoning and municipal procedures, operations, project management and turnaround while maximizing clients’ value in their property.” Most recently, Henke played a key role in the development of Grand Park, a 400-acre sports campus located in the northwest quadrant of SR 32 and US 31 in Westfield.
Given the fact that the 2016 Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis HomeA-Rama takes place at Chatham Hills in September, he will have the opportunity to show many families to their new home sites. Thousands of people will attend to get ideas for their new builds or remodels by visiting 11 custom homes that feature the latest trends in indoor and outdoor living. In addition, the Henke family will have the chance to share their innovative vision, appealing Pete Dye designed golf course, unique lifestyle amenities and enchanting setting with the public in a way that showcases what they have to offer at Chatham Hills. “The upgrading of US 31 has opened the door for us to create this high quality development,” Henke says.
is so excited. This is truly a family affair.” Even wife and mother, Kathy, is active in the business, coordinating events and volunteering for whatever is needed. “We work hard. We have passion. We have humility, and we have integrity,” Steve smiles fondly. “It is an honor to work alongside my children. Both are very good at taking on responsibility and eager to learn. And, I get to see them all of the time.” Steve firmly believes in family first and has taken steps to preserve the integrity of those families who called these farmlands home before him. Thus, small pieces of history are left in place such as an original fire pit nestled just along the tree line, an old milk barn sitting just outside the welcome center and the stately Lindley house built on the property in the 1800s, which was the first brick home in Washington Township. Historically, there is evidence that the home was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and family friend and famous poet James Whitcomb Riley recited stories to children by the fireside.
“Westfield is now closer to Indianapolis time-wise. Residents can drive down Tomlinson, merge onto US 31 and drive to the airport without a stoplight. Adjacent to the sports complex, Grand Park Not to mention, the Monon Trail is in Village is in the development and design phase development and will be brought through with plans to offer commercial space, retail the community, so people can jump on their According to Brad, when Steve researched shops, waterfront dining and entertainment bikes and ride to Carmel or all of the way to the Lindley’s heritage, he found that the along an East Coast-inspired boardwalk. downtown Indianapolis.” family originated from Chatham, New Jersey, hence the name Chatham Hills. WHITE’S ELECTRICAL IS TRULY A FULL SERVICE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR It seems in today’s world the term “full service” has several different meanings. There are businesses that have a large array of products and services and claim to be full service, but when you call them after business hours, you get a voice that is barely recognizable, and a promise to contact you within the next 48 hours. Alternatively, there are the locally owned and operated businesses like White’s Electrical that truly are committed to being “full service” by offering a large number of services and products and then backing them up with prompt 24-hour service provided by competent and capable service personnel. Shawn White, the owner of White’s Electrical, has been in the business long enough to know what works for his customers and what does not. One of the lessons White has learned over the years is that there is no substitute for having quality people on your team. White recognizes that hiring quality team members may cost more and reduce profitability in the short term, but long-term growth is dependent on having high quality people. Because of this long-term view, White’s Electric has enjoyed double digit growth each year to where they now have 31 full-time employees. White emphasized their commitment to customer service includes a commitment to show up when they say they will be there, complete the job on time and always call ahead to let the customer know exactly when they will arrive. White and his management
team continually instill these principles of customer service into the entire team. For White’s Electrical, “full service” also means being large enough to provide all the services his clients might need, whether a large commercial project or doing the wiring for the construction of a new home to helping a residential customer wire a new ceiling fan. Large commercial businesses like Best Buy, Menards and Pilot truck stops regularly hire White’s Electrical to help manage their electrical needs for new construction and maintenance. White’s has become particularly popular for realtors who are always in a time crunch and need their client’s work done right, on time and within budget in order to get a home sale closed. If you purchase something from Lowe’s in the Indianapolis area that requires electrical work, there is a good chance that White’s, as one of Lowe’s preferred contractors, will get the call to provide the service. A real growth area for White’s in the past few years has been residential customers who want to have the peace of mind that a backup home generator provides. As our lives become more dependent on technology, and the weather becomes more and more unpredictable, the safety and security of a home generator is quickly becoming more of a necessity to many people. White’s offers several manufacturers and models of home generators.

What many people don’t realize, until it’s too late, is that their natural gas furnace will not function without electricity. So, when that ice storm hits in February, and the electricity is out for three days, not only will your Internet be out, but your house will also be freezing without a backup generator. If you’re looking for a full service electrical contractor, call White’s Electrical. They have the size and commitment to service to truly be your “full service” contractor.

Rubaroc Basketball Court
RUBAROC: BOUNCES LIKE RUBBER WEARS LIKE ROCK Are you tired of the concrete around your pool deck always cracking, or the kids slipping on it when its wet or burning their feet in the hot summer? Fortunately, Rubaroc provides an attractive and affordable solution to the danger of slipping and falling caused when concrete is used on pool decks and other areas around the house like garage floors and driveways. Unlike concrete, which is a hard impermeable surface that causes water to puddle and create a dangerous area that can be slick as ice, Rubaroc surfaces are made from rubber and are air and water permeable and slip resistant. Because it is air and water permeable it is also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Recently we spoke with Alex Zehr and Landon Harner, owners of Landex Development, a certified installer of Rubaroc. Zehr and Harner explained that the Rubaroc surface begins with manmade EPDM rubber granules that are ground and colored and then mixed onsite with a high polymer UV resin that is applied to the surface and then hand troweled down to the proper thickness.
This surface can be installed indoors as easily as outdoors and in numerous colors and designs. Several professional sports teams have installed Rubaroc surfaces in their locker rooms. In addition to creating an attractive non-slip surface, a Rubaroc surface, due to its porosity, does not get as hot as a concrete surface in the summer. Importantly, a Rubaroc surface is long lasting and won’t crack like concrete. According to Zehr, Rubaroc has been offering and improving its surfaces for over 30 years. Harner noted that, “Rubaroc has numerous applications around the house like patio decks, basketball and tennis courts, driveways, garage floors, porches and outdoor living areas. Surprisingly it is also an ideal surface for horse stables.” In the stable setting, a Rubaroc surface is slip resistant, provides a softer surface than concrete and, unlike sawdust, can be easily cleaned with a pressure washer. If you would like to know more about how a Rubaroc surface could make your house safer, more attractive and reduce maintenance costs, call Alex or Landon.

AT&T PRESIDENT
BILL SOARDS
ON INNOVATION
Entering the office of Indiana’s President of AT&T is a step back in time to the days of Mad Men. The woodwork and furnishings are of a different era. Yet regardless of the resurgence in popularity of mid-century furniture and design aesthetic, the offices are being updated to reflect a change in the times.
who owned a vending machine company and four retail stores, but is best known for serving twenty years as a state legislator. There’s no doubt the influence his father had on Bill’s own civic engagement and career mindset. At the age of twenty-three, Bill was elected and served for four years on the Indianapolis City County Council. After moving to Zionsville with his wife and daughters, he served for an additional five years on the Boone County Council.
As President of AT&T, Bill Soards brings a unique element of youth and energy to his position. Progressive and forward thinking, his leadership comes at a critical time. While all of his predecessors have looked toward the horizon, Soards embraces change like no one before him.
Perhaps the influence of staying current and ahead of trends is what drives him, yet this is someone who is not afraid to take risks. With the dynamics of technological evolution, AT&T is keeping up by supporting tech startup communities to foster STEM.
The remodeling efforts in the building reflect the evolving culture of a company as it strives to stay ahead of the technology of tomorrow. While Bill appreciates the nostalgia and history of his office, he welcomes change.
One way is through sponsorship of Eleven Fifty Academy’s classrooms located inside Launch Fishers. With demand for careers in the technology field, cultivating these students now is critical to Indiana’s tomorrow. “Innovation drives what we do,” says Soards. “A shift in innovation creates change and with the pace of technology, this is a constant. Supporting Eleven Fifty Academy is a natural partnership for us.”

Bill grew up on Indy’s north side and graduated from North Central High School and then studied at Butler University where he majored in political science and telecommunications. He’s fortunate to have known at a young age where his interests lie, and not only majored in them, is living them daily. Bill’s father was an entrepreneur
“The need for a skilled tech workforce cannot be overstated,” says John Qualls, President of Eleven Fifty Academy. “We are grateful that AT&T shares our vision, for it’s TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / INDY METRO
partnerships such as theirs that will enable us to skill up Hoosiers to meet the demand for jobs in this field, which is increasing exponentially.” The AT&T Engagement Center inside of Launch Fishers also includes an AT&T space for product demos and prominent advertising to their members. Bill refers to the partnership with Launch Fishers as “an experiment”, which is fitting since experiments are what lead to innovation. ”A presence inside of Launch Fishers is equally beneficial for internal as well as external reasons. We are a global, integrated communications company providing wireless and broadband access but our industry is changing rapidly,” states Bill. “We are creating innovation internally and we want our employees to be a part of the innovative community as a whole.” “AT&T has been an awesome partner with Launch Fishers. From conducting hackathons with our community, to their support of our Launch Fishers High School Fellowship, they have proven their interest in helping our innovation economy continue to grow and thrive!” says John Wechsler, Founder of Launch Fishers. AT&T was once a startup. Alexander Graham Bell was inspired by his mother. In spite of the fact that she was deaf, she
became an accomplished pianist, inspiring young Alexander to take on great challenges throughout his life. The Bell Telephone Company filed for corporate status in July of 1877, 139 years ago. Alexander Graham Bell was an early entrepreneur whose love of invention started a company that is today the world’s largest global communications company. Bill Soards is technically President of Indiana Bell.
“Communications is continually disrupted - by devices, technologies - we are moving faster, smarter, trying newly innovated projects and ideas, and while I appreciate the nostalgia of the history of our company and industry, it is entirely based on change. That’s why we support new initiatives like Eleven Fifty Academy and Launch Fishers,” says Bill.

AT&T Brand Ambassador, Vanessa Cretsinger, works a few days a week inside of Launch Fishers where she coordinates vendor events and networks with members of Launch Fishers. “By learning about community entrepreneurs, we can explore what AT&T can do to help their businesses grow,” shares Vanessa. “When you align with a vision of technology and entrepreneurial innovation, good things happen,” says Bill, who is open to the happy coincidences of unintended results. Inspired by Launch Fishers, AT&T created their own co-working space for their employees. AT&T has owned the 220 Meridian location since 1907. “Having been with the company for over sixteen years, it means something to be back in your home town doing something special,” says Bill, who has moved around the country with AT&T, recently living in Denver before moving back to his home state.

"This isn't an AT&T store,” says Vanessa of working inside of Launch Fishers. The AT&T corporate-owned retail stores are known internally as CORE. “The intention is for Launch members to discover what AT&T does and for us to discover what they do and how we can work together,”

“Denver is a great city. We spent four and a half years there, but it’s made it even better to be home,” says Bill. “We can't be Austin, Boston, Denver - we need to be authentic to Indy.” Bill insists that every co-working space needs it’s own brand of authenticity, true to its local roots.

TALENT SEARCH KICKS OFF FOR 54TH CIRCLE OF LIGHTS
Indianapolis gospel group Zions Joy!

Magic and excitement will again permeate the air around Monument Circle during one of Central Indiana’s most treasured holiday traditions – the Circle of Lights®. Presented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481, the 54th Circle of Lights® will kick off the holiday season, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 25. The celebration will include acts from around Central Indiana, a performance from the cast of the 2016 Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s “IPL Yuletide Celebration” and a visit by the big guy himself – Santa Claus. The evening will culminate with the mesmerizing lights from the 284-foot Christmas tree on the ground while fireworks dazzle overhead. The show is set. Now onto the search for entertainment. Downtown Indy and members of IBEW #481 invite all entertainers, singers, musicians, dancers, choral groups and more to the Circle
of Lights® talent search auditions held at the IBEW #481, 1828 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. Auditions welcome performers on a first-come, first-serve basis. Performers should choose only one of the following audition times and plan several hours for the audition process:

in case you receive the invitation to return. The Alex, Jeffrey and Wilson Trio suggests going as far as having a third number ready. The trio did an exceptional job with the song, “Mary, Did You Know?” for their first audition. When they received the callback, the trio performed a fun number called “Santa Buddies,” a twist off the rendition of “Santa Babies.” With the final auditions complete, the judges announced the winners. The trio had indeed claimed a spot in the grand finale. Why the suggestion for a third number? ”We, as a bunch of teenagers, didn’t want to upstage Sandy Patti’s version of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’” said baritone Alex Milligan, supporting a mischievous smile. “We were all told to use familiar holiday songs for our stage performances. While ‘Santa Buddies’ was an exhilarating number, it wasn’t a familiar holiday song. We ended up singing, ‘The Christmas Song.’” Whether planning two songs or three, audition rules highly advise against singing a capella. Instead, performers bring a CD or an accompanist to the auditions. (A keyboard will be available for auditions.) How do performers choose between the two options? According to the 2015 gospel group Zions Joy!, they keep in mind factors such as the style of the song, the amount of pre-audition practice time and the feel you want to portray to your audience. Zions Joy! President Kay Insley clarified by saying, “If you're singing a big, uptempo song and don't have a full band backing you, it's probably best to sing with a CD. If an accompanist comes to every practice, live music is always a plus.” In closing, Insley humbly said, “The bottom line is that you should feel incredibly comfortable with your musical selection before your audition. You want to walk in feeling confident, prepared and ready to have fun. Whether or not you make it to the big stage, you are gaining experience and memories that will last a lifetime.”

CONGRATS TO OUR “HELPING HANDS AWARD” WINNER AL ERICKSON Our Helping hands winner for September is Al Erickson Al Erickson and his wife Carole came to Carmel in 1990. They decided to stay after retirement in 2007. With retirement, visions of golf, travel, tennis and tending his property danced in Al’s mind. However, the call to help others was stronger. While Al plays golf and tennis and occasionally travels with his wife, Carole, he spends a great deal of each week volunteering in his community. He found his passion volunteering for a wheelchair ramp building ministry called SAWS. SAWS is short for Servants at Work. SAWS is a not-for-profit that builds wheelchair ramps to provide persons with disabilities and conditions of aging with the freedom to remain in their homes. Al serves on the Board of Directors, is its Secretary, Chairman of the Finance Committee and a Project Manager who leads ramp building projects for SAWS. Congratulations Al and thank you for your service to the community! atCarmel.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 51
