ART ON MAIN CARMEL GALLERY & GIFTS SHOP INSPIRES & ENGAGES COMMUNITY THROUGH NEW EXHIBITIONS Writer / Jennifer Brugh Photographer / Glenda White
In the fall of 2017, Art on Main Gallery & Gifts opened its doors to the public after renovating the space that once held ArtSplash Gallery. Nestled along Main Street in the Carmel Arts & Design District, Art on Main’s mission is to expose the Carmel and Indianapolis communities to a wide range of styles and mediums created by artists
around Indiana. Together, Marie Reamer, Nancy Keating, Kim Greene, Randall Scott Harden, and Deb Slack have built a business that focuses on displaying and selling artwork with a mission to “engage, inspire and instruct,” the surrounding community. “We wanted to keep a gallery going, and we wanted to bring in different local artists and include 3-D work, which hadn’t been in the gallery in the past,” Marie Reamer says, coowner. “So, we have a whole new business plan and a wide variety of art available.” 8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com
With approximately 2000-square feet of floor space to fill, Art on Main mixes things up regularly. At the start of each month, the gallery hosts a themed reception to showcase an exhibit of a different local artist in the main showroom. Sometimes, artists will pair up and share the space, but for an entire month, each of them has the chance to show off new pieces of their work related to the theme. Keating says the changing of the art exhibits every month is an excellent time for the
other artists to bring in new original pieces and spruce up their smaller showcases with fresh artwork. “We like to keep it fresh, different, and keep people coming in,” Keating says. “All of our artists are professional artists. This is how they make their living. This is not a hobby.” In July, oil paintings by Harden lined the walls in the main showroom of the gallery. As the featured exhibit for the month, Harden’s “Fields and Barns” paintings depicted everything from old, run-down barns to fields full of hay bales from around rural Indiana. The beginning of August brought about a change for the gallery as Anastasiya Combs and Sylvia Gray teamed up for the “Canvas & Silk: Fine Art for Walls and Wardrobe” exhibit. Gray is famously known for her hand-painted silk scarves that depict stunning and colorful pictures of flower arrangements, animals, or patterns. Combs’
oil paintings will hang from the whitewashed walls of the main room to give guests something further to admire when they visit in August.
the City of Carmel.
“We have people come from not just Carmel, not just Indiana, Chicago…I have met people in the gallery from, I would say, at least 20 states in the last several years,” Reamer says.
On the second Saturday of every month, the city hosts a public event that’s full of live music, face painting, caricatures, and gallery walks with businesses staying open until 9 p.m. It’s a big event for not just Art on Main, but all of the businesses involved. However, according to Reamer and Keating, all of their artists do well all year long.
In addition to having their receptions each month, Art on Main participates in the “Meet Me on Main” campaign put on by
“We do curate our artists,” Keating says. “So, we have a mix of styles, and a mix of price points.”

Reamer says the number of pieces an artist sells varies from month to month. Sometimes Keating, a contemporary mosaic artist who works mainly with glass, does well and in other months, the painters do well. Even Reamer, a fine art photographer, sells her vivid pictures of the travels she’s shared with her husband around the world. In September, Reamer will get the chance to display a “photographic tour of New Zealand” as the featured artist of the month, an exhibit she is working hard to put together and is excited for people to see.

Papa Fattoush Co-Owners Elham Alhassoon and her husband Ahmad Al-Maaitah

lham Alhassoon, and her husband, Ahmad Al-Maaitah, co-owners of Papa Fattoush, 15 E. Main St., Carmel, have made a lot of new friends since they opened their restaurant this past fall. They knew their prime location on Main Street, and the delicious taste of their food, would bring customers through the doors.
“We decided to move here after we read a great review about Carmel Clay Schools on the internet,” Elham says. “Our main goal was to support our kids with a good education since they speak English as a second language. After three years, we realized that Carmel not only has a great school system but is also a safe place to live and raise kids. It’s a beautiful and clean city, a great community and neighborhood.”
“We made a decision to open for the public just one day after we passed the final inspection on Sept. 14,” Elham says. “We received a lot of support from the Carmel Art & Design district, on our Facebook page and from some other popular Facebook groups in Carmel. We also had friends help us promote our soft opening day, which was very successful. Our first order was Saganki, our fried cheese.”
Elham and Ahmad, who are from Jordan, say their children also enjoy the Carmel schools.
Elham adds that they want every guest to be satisfied with their meal. She says a team of experts serves only the best.
“We have two kids who attend Carmel schools, and our little one will attend next year,” Elham says. “Our mission is to support Carmel schools as an appreciation for their greatness.” Elham stressed that Carmel has also been a great place to start a business. She and Ahmad opened Papa Fattoush on Sept. 15, 2018.
“The secret of our great food is the homemade recipes, fresh ingredients and healthy cooking procedures,” Elham says. “We have ingredients delivered to us fresh every day from local vendors. We also have highly-trained chefs that want everyone to enjoy their meal.”
THE COMMUNITY HAS SUPPORTED PAPA FATTOUSH AND HAVE LIKED THE ADDITION OF NEW BUSINESS TO DOWNTOWN CARMEL. 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com
Elham believed there was a need for a restaurant like Papa Fattoush in the area. “We chose Carmel because it is a lovely city, and there were no similar Greek and Mediterranean restaurants in the area,” Elham says. “The community has supported Papa Fattoush and have liked the addition of new business to downtown Carmel.” Customers already have their favorites. “The most popular selling item is the Gyro and Lamb Kabab,” Elham says. “Customers also like to build their own options in the menu, since they have a choice to pick Carb, Protein or a salad, or fries (which have a delicious, smoky crunch). Our Hummus and Falafel are the best in town.” Papa Fattoush also has delicious baklava, chicken shawarma, tabbouleh, Turkish coffee, a rice platter, and lentil soups, among other menu items. Elham adds that customers have told her they enjoy the large variety of choices. “The good thing about our menu is that it has many options for meat people, vegetarians and vegan, too,” Elham says. “We picked the menu items carefully to assure the satisfaction of a wide range of customers.”
Papa Fattoush is located at 15 E. Main Street, Suite 100 in Carmel. You can give them a call at 317-564-8782 or visit them online at papafattoush.com for more information.

They also did a wedding for an NBA player where the bride requested that the cake be as tall as her groom. “We’ve had cakes that are so tall we’ve had to bring a ladder with us to put the top tier of the cake on the table,” Ritz says.

“Most artists want their art to live on for a long time. Ours is gone in 20 minutes,” Ritz says. “It’s kind of exciting, though, because you get that big rush of people who love the cake. They cut into it and destroy it, which is not something you usually do to art. Then they eat it and it’s equally delicious. In that way, we get that reward twice.”
“Weddings aren’t what they used to be,” Ritz says. “There are no rules, which means brides and grooms can choose fun flavors like, say, pumpkin cake for a fall wedding.”
Classic Cakes offers gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, vegan, sugar-free, soy-free, nut-free, and dye-free menus. They also offer complimentary cake tasting by appointment for brides and grooms. Newlywed Melody White purchased her wedding cake from Classic Cakes and couldn’t have been happier with her choice. “The design and flavors were delivered exactly as promised,” White says. “And we received rave reviews all night from guests about the great flavor and perfect texture.” When Daniel Waschow stepped into Classic Cakes in search of a birthday cake, a staff member offered him a variety of samples. Ultimately, he selected the raspberry cake, which was a big hit at the party. “Most bakeries only offer made-toorder cakes and need 48-hour notice, but Classic Cakes had a wide selection of cakes and cupcakes ready to go,” Waschow says. “I wish we would have taken a picture of the cake before our inner gourmands devoured the heavenly treat!”

CLEAR BRA INDY 1071 3rd Ave SW Carmel, IN 317-752-4151 clearbraindy.com
Writer / Mandi Cheesman
We all know it’s important to take steps to protect our house from the ravages of winter weather, but how many of us think about protecting our next biggest investment — our cars? The professionals at Clear Bra Indy in Carmel have made protecting cars their business since 1999 when owner Kyle Owen turned his passion for protecting paint into a business when he began applying paint protection film (PPF) on aircraft. In 2003, he literally took his love on the road when he began applying PPF to cars in their own driveways. Fast forward to today, and Owen has 17 employees applying PPF, ceramic coatings, window tint and vinyl wraps inside a spotless facility housed at 1071 3rd Ave SW. On any given day those employees might be working on a car owned by an Indy 500 legend, an NFL coach, or an ordinary car lover, including the one whose $400,000 car was slated to arrive any day from California into their trusted hands. “My dad and brothers were painters, and I always had a passion for protecting paint and this film is perfect for that,” Owen says of the film which was created to protect helicopter blades during the Vietnam War and later converted for use in the automotive world.
“Really, what you should do to protect your car in the winter is what you should be doing to protect your car year-round,” Meyer says. Here are some tips:
•R emove all stains from your upholstery and carpeting. •O nly use touchless car washes to prevent damage.
• Always store your car inside if possible.
•P rotect the exterior of your car with a spray wax at least three times a year.
•O nly use quality detail products. “You definitely get what you pay for in this business,” Owen says.
•C onsider a paint protection film (PPF) to protect against dings and other impact damage.
PPF Magazine named Clear Bra Indy one •G et a quality, professional detailing at least of the nation’s top PPF dealers in 2018, once a year. “This is the type where they use and Owen and Clear Bra Indy President specific tools to get in all of the nooks and Eric Meyer attribute that growth to their crannies of your car to get out all of the dirt unyielding attention to detail. And that and dust that you can’t even see,” Meyer attention to detail is what can help protect adds. “It should take several hours, and your car from the damaging effects of winter nothing should be left untouched.” and of daily use. 18 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

BEHIND THE SCENES GREG SORVIG IS LIVING HIS DREAM AS DIRECTOR OF FILM PROGRAMMING FOR HEARTLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Michael Durr & Heartland International Film Festival
Greg Sorvig lived in 10 different states before his family moved to Indiana when he was a high school senior. “I had no intention of staying here,” says Sorvig, though he admits that he found one wonderful thing while residing in Avon — his future bride Rachel. “The girl I took to prom later became my wife,” he says. They’ve been married for 11 years and have two daughters, Leona and Elise, as well as a wiener-dog named Tootsie.
Before he became a husband and father, however, Sorvig studied Communication & Culture (with a focus in Film Studies) at Indiana University. A fan of movies since he was a boy, Sorvig hoped to one day carve out a career in the film industry. He just didn’t know quite what that would look like.
number of jobs, including graphic design, website development and marketing. Then in 2011, he started working with the Heartland Film Festival, reviewing movies and doing marketing before becoming the Director of Film Programming for Heartland Film and its Academy Award-qualifying Indy Shorts International Film Festival.
“In college, I wrote an atrocious comingof-age screenplay,” says Sorvig, who completed two summer internships with Walt Disney World in Orlando. Both experiences sharpened his interpersonal communication skills.
“I think many people picture me with my legs propped up, kicked back, watching movies,” Sorvig says. “They forget I lead a nonprofit, as well.”
In the years to follow, Sorvig delved into a atCarmel.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 19
And that’s no small feat. He’s in charge of studio relationships, picking out what they show and what they market.
“The heart of Heartland is the films and these relationships so I’m definitely busy making calls, meetings and providing organizational guidance,” Sorvig says. When deciding on which films to premiere he studies the artistic quality of the film, including its story, technical aspects and how it will resonate with audiences. He considers what audiences expect or hope to see, which includes those films with predictable endings, but he also balances those out with movies that are progressive in content. Even if some films have that “love it or hate it” quality, he likes it when people say, “You know what? I didn’t like it, but I understand why it’s here.” Much like an extensive menu selection at a restaurant, Sorvig provides something
for everyone at Heartland, which typically attracts around 20,000 people. “Film is such a change agent,” Sorvig says. “It broadens people’s horizons to other topics and cultures.” According to Sorvig, this year Heartland received 3,100 short films from more than 98 countries to review, which is a record number. The review committee whittled that number down to 152 films, less than 5%. “Getting Oscar accolades and nominations is like finding multiple needles in global haystacks,” Sorvig says. Yet, since 2011, seven short films programmed at Heartland have gone on to win Academy Awards® with a total of 19 nominations.
“We used to be ancillary, but we’ve spread our wings,” says Sorvig, who has had the opportunity to serve as a panelist at different film festivals. This past December, he was one of the 30 grant panelists for the National Endowment for the Arts where he encouraged funding for media arts programs across the country. Though he always wanted to be a screenwriter or filmmaker, Sorvig says he found a dream he didn’t know existed and feels custom-made to do it. “Serendipitously, this career path found me, and I’m so glad it did,” says Sorvig, who though he once swore he’d never stay in the Midwest is so glad he chose to settle in Carmel, a town that embraces the arts.
Sorvig encourages locals to attend the Heartland International Film Festival to see what it’s all about. “If you don’t go, you don’t know,” he says. “Come dip your toe in the water. Hopefully, once you experience it, you’ll love it enough to jump into the pool with us.” For one thing, there’s the chance to rub elbows with some stars. “If you want to feel like you are part of the film industry on an intimate yet casual level, where you can actually meet and interact with people, the Heartland Film Festival is a great one to attend,” Sorvig adds. “At Sundance, Toronto and these huge festivals, you might be lucky to catch a glimpse of somebody on stage. Here stars partake in panels with Q&A sessions.” In fact, Sorvig has moderated many of those Q&A sessions, having shared a stage with a bunch of showbiz Robs — Rob Reiner, Robert DeNiro, Robert Downey Jr. — “The Avengers” star graciously tweeted about the Heartland Film Festival. “He didn’t need to do that, but those are the connections that are made here,” Sorvig says. “It all comes down to our Hoosier hospitality. We have a great reputation for treating people right.” The 2019 Heartland International Film Festival will be held October 10-20. For more information, visit heartlandfilm.org.

GREEK TONY’S
POPULAR FAMILY-OWNED PIZZA & SUB SHOP CELEBRATES 35 YEARS IN CARMEL Writer / Matt Keating . Photographer / Michael Durr
he owners and employees at Greek Tony’s Pizza & Sub Shop, 1732 E.116th Street, Carmel, have been serving the Carmel community for 35 years and plan to keep making their delicious food for years to come. Sally Harris, co-owner of Greek Tony’s Pizza, says she has enjoyed meeting so many wonderful customers over the years. “My husband, Hugh, and I opened Greek Tony’s in June 1984,” Harris says. “We have always been located in the Woodland Shoppes on the southeast corner of 116th and Rangeline Road, just in different locations within the plaza. First, we were in a small space of just 1,500 square feet in the back corner.” Eight years later, they moved into a premier space in the front of the plaza, and that’s when the restaurant really began to grow. “A few years later we added the space next door, our ‘Party Room,’ which seats 80-90 people,” Harris says. “It’s great for business meetings, sports banquets, birthdays, fundraising events, and we’ve even had several wedding rehearsal dinners.” Loyal customers at Greek Tony’s have continually responded to the restaurant’s delicious ingredients. “We are family-owned and operated (three generations of the Harris family have worked at the restaurant), for over 35 years,” Harris says. “We make our dough and sauce every day. We cook all of our sausage and bacon on site daily. We have been around for so long that some of the staff members that worked for us in the 1980s and 1990s now have kids that work for us at Greek Tony’s Pizza.” Harris adds that Carmel has been an ideal location for the restaurant. “Hugh and I bought a house in Carmel while he was playing with the Indianapolis Racers World Hockey Association (WHA) hockey team,” Harris says. “We decided to stay in Carmel after he retired because we
had kids and loved the idea of raising them here. Our location was ideal in proximity to our house. There were very few restaurants in Carmel at the time, and there were not many developments or locations to house a restaurant. We felt as though this community would grow and create great demand for a family pizza joint.” Harris notes that her daughter, Sara, has worked at Greek Tony’s Pizza for several years. “Sara has grown up at Greek Tony’s Pizza since she was four years old,” Harris says. “Nobody knows the business better. She started pouring drinks and refills (back when there wasn’t a self serve soda dispenser), washing tables and filling parmesan containers at age 11. Funny enough, her daughter, Maggie, who is seven, loves to come help at the ‘pizza store’ as we call it within the family. Hugh and I have retired, and Sara has decided to take over as the General Operational Manager.” Harris says the transition at the restaurant has been very easy. “Sara was already running the shop for several years, along with our other amazing managers,” she says. “She has a great team. Kim Johnson, our daughter, and Amy Lukowski (who has worked for us for 33 years, and is like a daughter) have been
long-term managers as well. We are very happy to have staff members Lucas, Taylor and Hailey (our granddaughter) as well, to help lead the managing team.”

Harris still helps out at Greek Tony’s.
“Breadsticks are a fan favorite,” she says. “They are a must-have. We are sorry in advance because you will crave them. Other favorites are our Chicago Italian Beef and our Greek Salad. The Oil & Vinegar dressing
APPRECIATION TO CARMEL Harris has been overwhelmed from all the community support Greek Tony’s has received over the years. “I feel that opening this restaurant led to a great future with our four children, instilling in them a business mindset and entrepreneurship,” she says. “Sara and Kim are leading Greek Tony’s Pizza into our 36th year of being open for business and growing it every day with their hard work and commitment to quality and service. With all the choices of restaurants and developments in Carmel, we are very appreciative to the community to still be a staple for more than 35 years.” Greek Tony’s Pizza & Sub Shop is located at 1732 E. 116th Street in Carmel. Owner Lois Fisher
YOUR CBD STORE OWNER EDUCATES POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS ON BENEFITS OF CBD Writer / Mandi Cheesman Photographer / Belinda Russell
Your CBD Store owner Lois Fisher cannot remember the last time she had to take a pill for pain relief, and it’s her hope that everyone will soon understand her reason why - CBD. Changes in the 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp from the Schedule I Narcotics List which made the sale of hemp by-product CBD (cannabidiol) legal. CBD stores could officially open this year, so Fisher and her sisters jumped at their chance to bring the product to market because of the life-changing results they had seen after using CBD themselves. Fisher, who recently opened a store in Westfield, and her sisters all had backgrounds in the medical profession. They also had the aches, pains and, in Fisher’s case, the arthritis that can sometimes come from the rigorous demands of her former nursing career. “Nothing I was prescribed pharmaceutically had ever helped,” Fisher says. “But I started using CBD a year and
a half ago, and I was blown away by the results. I thought to myself, ‘I have to get this into the hands of people.’” Her store opened at 17435 Carey Road, Suite A, in April, just shortly after her sisters, Della Hutton and Rebekah Grandi, opened a store in Carmel at 255 E. Carmel Drive in March. Another sister, Margo Battenberg, opened a store in Alabama in June. And all of the Your CBD Stores have one primary mission — to educate. “Education about CBD is key in our stores,” Fisher says. “We chose to partner with Your CBD Store because it is a high quality, boutique-like store that aims to remove the stigma that has been associated with CBD — that stigma of a smoky, seedy-type vape shop. Our brand does not allow anything like that.”
the compound found in hemp’s cousin plant marijuana and that is responsible for the “high” associated with the drug. To legally sell CBD products, the products must contain less than .3 percent of THC. Some of Fisher’s products have no THC. “I’ve had some elderly clients come in and sit for more than an hour just asking questions and that is what I love,” Fisher says. “I’m all yours when you’re here.” Fisher does not make any medical claims about CBD and is quick to point out the store’s disclaimer that says CBD has not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration nor are the products “intended for the cure, diagnosis, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease in man or animal.”
“But I can speak to the positive results of family, friends and former patients who just keep telling me about their positive results,” Visitors to Your CBD Store will find a welcoming, comfortable place to sit down she says. and be educated about CBD products and Currently, there are no licensure guidelines how they might help them. “The FDA is working on guidelines, and I am glad,” she adds. Until then, CBD sales are a buyer-beware arena. “If you order online, really do your research and always go with a reputable resource,” Fisher advises. How can you tell whether your CBD products come from a reputable retailer? One way is whether your product contains a certificate of analysis, which Fisher says is the law in Indiana. A COA is a testing procedure that is done by an independent, third-party lab that tests to see what is in the CBD oil. If there is a COA, there is a QR code on the bottle that you can scan that will show you the ingredients the lab found. Those ingredients should match the claims made on the bottle. “If there’s no COA, there’s no way to know what’s in the bottle,” Fisher says. “The COA
is the hallmark of a good company.” Fisher adds that the CBD her company sells is third-party quality tested three times — while it is growing, when it is harvested and in its finished form. There are many opinions about the effectiveness of CBD, but Fisher says she believes one of its greatest strengths is as an anti-inflammatory. She says customers have also reported positive results using her products, which come in oils taken under the tongue, topical pain creams, gummy bears, skin products and pet products, to treat anxiety and sleep disorders.
The Your CBD Store franchise started in Florida less than a year ago and already has almost 400 stores selling the Colorado“And the best part is, you don’t have to make radical lifestyle changes to see positive grown hemp. results,” she says. Brewer says attendance has grown steadily each year from approximately 1,200 in 2012 to nearly 6,000 in 2018. According to Brewer, the City expects at least 6,000 attendees to join in on the dancing and dining festivities this year.
“Oktoberfest is an opportunity to celebrate German music and food while discovering everything City Center has to offer, all while watching a beautiful sunset over the Palladium and Center Green,” she says. “It is often seen as a last-chance musical blast of
