POPULAR ALEHOUSE LAUNCHES SECOND LOCATION OFF 96TH STREET Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Michael Durr

Following on two-plus years of success in Greenwood, Tried & True Alehouse owners John & Laura Gladish is off and running with a second location on Indy’s northside, in the space formerly occupied by long-time Indy establishment Moon Dog Tavern.

“We did a little bit of demo and turned the back dining room area that used to be a live music venue into a family dining space,” Gladish says. “My wife painted every wall in the entire restaurant, and we did some various things to make it our own.” Everything from the food to the music and atmosphere at both locations, according to Gladish, was formulated in honor of the establishment’s name.

All ages are welcome for lunch and dinner, and customers can watch one of the establishment’s 35 televisions while an ongoing soundtrack of mainly classic rock music fills the air. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights, and Tried & True recently began hosting live music on Fridays on the outdoor all ages patio (Weather permitting) or adult 21+ only bar area. More than 50 beers, with 24 on draft, are offered at any one time at Tried & True, including a range of local brews like Sun King, Three Floyds, Daredevil, Taxman and many more.

“We have the usual strong domestic sellers, but we also want to keep it as local as we can and rotate different local beers out,” Director of Operations Partner Nick Workman says. Gladish adds that in its first year Tried &True has gotten very positive feedback from northside patrons.

“We make everything that we possibly can from scratch, and I think customers can ultimately tell the difference when they taste scratch-made food versus something where there’s a lot of ingredients that have been frozen,” he says. “I think customers are appreciating that part of it.”

“When we opened the first Tried & True, our intentions were to create a successful concept to be able to grow in Indiana, in the Indianapolis area first and then outside of that over the years to come,” he says. “So far it’s going well here on the northside. Now that the roundabout is completed in front of our restaurant we are excited to see our sales grow week after week.”

Workman adds that Tried & True has wasted no time getting involved with the local community through food donation and charity partnerships, recently hosting a Kick

Eat The Frog Fitness, located at 12751 N. “The frog is your worst task, the thing you don’t want to do, but need to get it out of the way,” says Assistant Manager Daniel Frausto, Jr. “For many people, their frog is working out. It’s something they know they must do and once they do it, they not only feel better that day but feel better for life.”

Frausto’s father, Daniel Frausto, recently retired from Eli Lilly and Company and has a passion for fitness. The concept for Eat The Frog Fitness resonated with him and he decided to own a franchise. Developed by Olympic Decathlon Gold and Silver Medalist Bryan Clay, it is geared toward people of all fitness levels. The first class is always free and if individuals chose to join the studio, they are given a fitness level assessment based on their flexibility, upper body fitness, lower body fitness and endurance.

Your Story. Life happens fast, and you want to be able to remember the best parts of it. At The Real Estate Firm, we use our expertise to find you the perfect place to continue your story. We know that home is more than just a place to park your car and lay your head down at night. Home is where you make your memories, so it needs to be a place that you’ll love for years to come.

Then, based on age and gender, an eight-week program is created that educates as well as outlines training. Members rotate through different stations of bikes, rowing machines and weights during both live classes and virtual ones shown on the huge screens. The science-based sessions offered focus on strength, cardio and flex core. At the conclusion of a program, a post fitness evaluation is given to create another program geared to specific needs and goals.

“One thing that sets the studio apart from others is that it is open 24 hours a day,” Frausto says. “It’s perfect for people with crazy schedules like nurses. One member is a bar manager that gets off at 3 a.m. and he wants to work out before he goes home.” The studio has some other unique aspects. During both virtual and live classes, the studio has technology to track the heart rate of participants. down. Points are given for each class member that attends and for how hard they worked based on the heart rate technology. The points feed into a reward system where discount cards to business partners such as beauty salons or restaurants are earned. The studio offers different price points based on how many life classes are taken per month. Membership ranges from $99 to $159. All packages include unlimited virtual classes that are held at the top of each hour, day or night.

“We are excited to be one of the first franchises. There are even more Eat The Frog franchises set to open around the area,’ Frausto says. “It’s going to help more people recognize our name. Candles for a Cause LO CAL BRE A ST CANCER SURVIVOR R AISES AWARENESS THROUGH KAR M A CANDLES Writer / Julie Yates . Photographer / Glenda White

Instead of living in doubt and fear, I choose to live in light and create to share that light with others,” states Cari Hahn when speaking of the candle company she founded. Karma Candles is an example of conquering adversity by using creative energy to produce something positive that benefits others. After holding jobs in the public sector, Hahn has come full circle back to her college major of art therapy by creating a line of high-end candles that not only look lovely but also have wonderful aromas. Producing candles has been a healing process for her and a way to raise funds and generate in-kind donations for organizations that support breast cancer patients. In spring 2016, Hahn was happily living the life of a busy wife to her firefighter husband and a mom to her two, twin teenage daughters. Then her world turned upside down. At only 40 years old and with no family history, Hahn was diagnosed with stage two cancer in both breasts. “I had just had a complete physical in January,” she says. “In March, I was sitting at my computer when I scratched an itch and felt something. I went in for a mammogram and lesions were discovered on both sides. A biopsy determined I had cancer. And my journey began.”

During the eights months she was in treatment, Hahn only took three weeks off from her full-time job as executive assistant to the mayor of Westfield. The goal was to live as normally as possible

while going through the necessary surgery, chemotherapy and bilateral radiation. “I wanted to keep busy and keep my mind busy, but within a couple of months after finishing treatment, I needed to step back,” she says. “I realized I needed to focus on my health and my kids. I left my full-time job and began working part-time as a real estate assistant. But I needed something more. “When I was in treatment, I loved surrounding myself with candles. My daughters love expensive candles and I thought, ‘I bet I could make those!’ So, my daughters and I started making them together. I wanted to make the cleanest candle I could, that still had fragrance. Each candle is made of soy wax that is hand-poured and hand-wicked. The tops are reheated to make them smooth and the labels are handwritten.” The candles are infused with natural

essential oils, are phthalate and paraffin-free and the wicks are made of zinc-free cotton wicks. They are sold at Endeavor Boutique, AH Collection, Purse Strings, Reveal by Polish, Twisted Sisters and the online curated gift box company, Something Splendid. Customers can create their own candles by visiting the Karma Candles website. First, a lidded vessel ranging from $24 to $38 is chosen such as a colorful cut glass or cloche container. Then a fragrance is selected. Among aromas available are citrusy Good Karma, flowery Day Spa or cinnamon-scented Autumn Stroll.

“Currently, for each purchase of a pink pineapple Candle for a Cause, I donate one to a person battling cancer or to the Megan S. Ott Foundation,” Hahn says. “I donate $10 to the IWINN Foundation for each pink lace Candle for a Cause. I enjoy doing local fundraisers and have donated my time and supplies for pouring parties (group candle making) for charities like Cocktails and Chemo. And I donate to cancer foundations when they ask. “In May I decided to work full time on the business,” Hahn adds. “I feel so blessed to have this opportunity. I wake up happy every day because it gives me so much joy. I believe what we put out in this world we receive in return. Visit KarmaCandlesStore.com for more information.

MASTER YOO’S WORLD CLASS TAE KWON DO CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING IN CARMEL Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Tae Kwon Do has made a comeback in recent years and one of the most popular martial arts schools around Central Indiana now has a third location. Master Yoo’s World Class Tae Kwon Do is officially celebrating its grand opening with an open house event on October 19. The schools are owned and operated by Master Eun Soo Yoo and his wife Jin Park and are recognized as one of the best in the state in terms of quality of facilities and classes being offered. The first Master Yoo’s Tae Kwon Do location

was opened in Noblesville in 2007. After experiencing great success there, it wasn’t long before that location expanded in 2012 and a Fishers location was opened in 2014. Today, Master Yoo’s now serves Carmel and the surrounding communities, too. “We realized there was a huge demand for a good martial arts school in the Carmel area while we were attending many local community and school events,” Park says. “We are very excited about this location. We are excited about being able to better serve our current students who live in West Carmel, Zionsville and Westfield. We are also excited about the outstanding new facility itself and the possibilities it gives our school for future programming that we have 18 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

not previously been able to provide to the community.” Master Yoo began Tae Kwon Do training at just five years old. He later received his Bachelor of Arts in Tae Kwon Do from Yong In University in Korea. He was a Korean Army instructor and also a member of the Korean National Demonstration Team before moving to the U.S. Master Yoo has been teaching in the U.S. since 2000. His mentor, Grandmaster Sun Chong is a former head coach of the U.S. National Tae Kwon Do team and the founder of Master Chong’s World Class Tae Kwon Do in Buffalo, NY. From 2000 through 2007, Master Yoo served as Head Master Instructor

for the Headquarters of World Class Tae Kwon Do, honing his own martial arts skills. For Master Yoo’s, the goal isn’t simply to teach students martial arts. The training includes skills they believe are valuable to daily life like respect, focus, self-control and confidence. They hope to develop positive character in all of their students. “At Master Yoo’s we are a Life Skill School,” Park adds. “The philosophy of Tae Kwon Do is to teach the body and mind by placing great emphasis on building character. We do this by teaching our students those skills that they can use in their daily life and improving their body. While studying with our Master Instructors, children gain focus, confidence, self-discipline and respect. Adults improve their physical fitness, relieve stress and learn self-defense in a positive, encouraging environment. “Families are able to train and spend quality time together in an activity that everyone can participate in and enjoy,” she adds. “Our mission statement is to empower our students with valuables skills for their daily life by providing them the highest quality martial arts instruction, and we feel that our mission will meet the expectation of these Carmel families.” The new facility also boasts top-notch features and amenities. The space is a stateof-the-art, 10,000 square-foot facility that offers multiple training rooms with Olympic quality mats, a group meeting room for special events and training, men’s and women’s changing rooms and viewing areas for parents and families to observe. Classes offered start as early as four years old as well as classes from 6-12, teens and adults. Master Yoo’s also offers popular family classes where all family members train side-by-side. Master Yoo’s has had a positive response so far from the Carmel community. The martial arts academy has always been a strong believer in supporting the community and local organizations. They continue to partner with the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent. Since 2013, Master atCarmel.com / OCTOBER 2019 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 19

“OUR MISSION STATEMENT IS TO EMPOWER OUR STUDENTS WITH VALUABLES SKILLS FOR THEIR DAILY LIFE BY PROVIDING THEM THE HIGHEST QUALITY MARTIAL ARTS INSTRUCTION, AND WE FEEL THAT OUR MISSION WILL MEET THE EXPECTATION OF THESE CARMEL FAMILIES.” Yoo’s Board Break-A-Thon has successfully raised more than $168,000 for Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. That type of community support will only continue in Carmel. “We also will continue to participate in Carmelfest, Carmel Safety Day and various community events,” Park says. “Master Yoo’s Tae Kwon Do runs a Partners in Education Program that supports the local elementary schools by participating in PTO fundraising events, after-school programs, Show-andTell, school carnivals and donating auction baskets, too.” Master Yoo’s invites the community to join them at the grand opening open house event at their new Carmel location on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and includes three special classes and activities for the public to attend free of charge. First, at 10:00 a.m., Little Tigers (ages 4 to 5) will be able to learn some basic Tae Kwon Do kicks and punches. At 11:15 a.m. an Anti-Bullying seminar for children (ages 6 to 12) followed by the grand opening ceremony and demonstrations at 12:30 p.m. Then the final event at 1:45 p.m. will be an opportunity for families and friends (ages 4 and up) to join in for a special class together. Grandmaster Chong and other special guests will also be on hand to celebrate the grand opening. FRIGHTENING FESTIVITIES

CONNER PRAIRIE’S HEADLESS HORSEMAN FALL FESTIVAL RETURNS WITH TRICKS & TREATS FOR ALL

Writer / Annelise Hanshaw Photography Provided

The customarily calm prairie gets a hearty dose of Halloween during the month of October. Orange smoke puffs out from under the covered bridge as a jack-o-lantern light swirls overhead. One-third of the prairie land is combed back for a haunted corn maze, and the smell of kettle corn and apple donuts fills the air. Drawing in nearly 300,00 visitors, the Headless Horseman shocks visitors both young and old. The Headless Horseman combines a traditional fall festival with the spookiness of Halloween. Thrill-seekers and cautious guests alike can appreciate the event in a variety of activities and shows. Conner Prairie’s staff caters to all ages in details that go above and beyond other events. The hayride, a fall staple, is amplified during the Headless Horseman. The tractor zigs

through almost all of Conner Prairie’s historic grounds while lights, sound effects, animatronics, and actors awe riders. When the sun goes down, the ride gets spookier with creatures jumping out at the carts. To get more of a scare, a section of the corn maze is dedicated to adrenaline junkies. After dark, those who dare can enter the haunted maze and be spooked by costumed volunteers. These eerie actors follow and jump at the maze runners. It’s great for older children that want a bit of a thrill. There’s also separate long and short routes for those who prefer a traditional corn maze experience. Conner Prairie’s corn maze is ranked eighth in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Senior manager of programs Mark Wehlage says Conner Prairie’s setting sets the almost 12-acre corn maze apart. The prairie setting amplifies as the foliage glows orange and yellow. October is Wehlage’s favorite month at Conner Prairie. In fact, it’s become a family tradition. 22 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

“I couldn’t wait to bring my daughter to the Headless Horseman,” Wehlage says. “And now, she’s expecting, and I can’t wait to bring my grandkids to the festival.” Wehlage’s daughter and son-in-law helped out in the haunted corn maze last year, making it a family affair. He knows he’s not the only one sentimental about the festival. “Because this festival has been around for so long, I think people enjoy the nostalgia of bringing younger generations to this event,” Wehlage says. One of the kids’ favorite parts is sitting alongside their parents watching the marionette show. The show tells a 10-minute version of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” while incorporating modern pop culture. It puts a twist of unpredictability on a classic. “Parents walk away scratching their heads, but the kids say it’s their favorite show,” Wehlage says.

Other shows include a rhythmic experience for the little ones or a magician that always wows the crowd. Various characters tell spooky stories throughout the event too. In a craft called the “White River Monster Maker,” kids can make a popsicle-stick puppet or a refrigerator magnet. It’s customizable, so their monsters reflect their imagination. More hands-on activities are scattered in the Midway Games. Kids dive into a pit of thousands of corn kernels to dig for bones. Some just enjoy the sensory stimulation of the kernels running between their fingers. Others line up for the classic test of strength, hoping to ring the high striker bell. There’s a giant plinko board with a candy coin, pumpkin bounce houses, pirate ring toss, and graveyard mini golf. Everything is styled for Halloween, like the pumpkin bowling game. The pins look like zombies, and the bowling ball is painted to look like a pumpkin. Each win gives a raffle ticket for prizes like Conner Prairie memberships and gift cards. Rooted in Indiana history instead of Halloween is the 1859 Balloon Voyage, available for an additional fee at Headless Horseman. It commemorates Indiana inventor John Wise’s air balloon that brought the first successful airmail delivery in the U.S. Conner Prairie releases their helium balloon 370 feet in the air for guests to experience a piece of state history. Headless Horseman is a Conner Prairie favorite. Bring the little pirates, princesses, superheroes, and ghouls for an October adventure. The night will bring giggles, cheers, smiles and maybe even a few screams. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Rd in Fishers. The Headless Horseman runs on select dates throughout October. Visit connerprairie.org/explore/ things-to-do/headless-horseman/ for ticket prices and more information.

j.nicole jewelry CARMEL MOM CREATES HANDMADE JEWELRY FOR EVERYDAY WOMEN Writer / Megan Jefferson Photography Provided

Jennifer Adhlakha grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and has always been interested in fashion. She grew up attending Catholic school and wearing uniforms. Because of this, she had to express her personal style through accessories. One of her first jobs was at a fabric and crafts store, where she was able to identify different materials to assemble accessories and jewelry. Adhlakha moved to Carmel 15 years ago and started creating jewelry for herself and friends. She opened j.nicole jewelry in 2003

as she was seeking an opportunity to create edgy and effortless pieces that women felt beautiful wearing.

to work from home because I was always able to create my own hours around the needs of my children.”

As she began designing out of her studio, j.nicole quickly grew into a brand that can be recognized for its unique and elegant design.

The artist started by selling her jewelry to boutiques and doing home parties. She is a self-taught artist but often takes courses to learn about new methods. Most of the time, she learns by trial and error.

Adhlakha’s studio has always been in her home. She’s balanced her work and home life, being a busy mom of three children. “I started my business when my oldest daughter was six months old. She is now 18 years old, Adhlakha says. “I love being able 26 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2019 / atCarmel.com

“If I think of a design or see something that inspires me, I will try different techniques to recreate my vision,” Adhlakha says. The response from the Carmel community has been overwhelmingly positive.

“As a local woman-owned small business, I have had a lot of success working with other local small business owners. Says Adhlakha. “I have been invited to countless local events!” Adhlakha doesn’t get her inspiration from any one place. Instead, she says it really depends on what she’s feeling that day and her surroundings. She loves texture and mixing metals. “I recently visited Cabo and while I was there I was mesmerized by the vibrant stain glass, which helped inspired my summer collection,” Adhlakha says. The combination of leather, semiprecious stones, pearls, brass and silver gives her work an unexpected and uniquely original style.

Halloween Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treating Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Kids (and parents) love the magic of Halloween. Walking around at night, in costume, collecting candy, what’s not to love? But there’s many aspects of the evening that get parents feeling nervous, which is why safety for the evening is especially important.

layer up if it’s going to be cold because you don’t want to be frozen in the middle of your trick or treating route!

STAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN Join in on the fun and walk with them, even dress up if you like! At our house we take turns, one person hands out candy for an hour while the other takes the kids out and then we swap. If that’s not an option, maybe try to connect with a group of friends to Did you know only about one-third of parents trick-or-treat together. You might also try discuss Halloween safety with their kids? But to plan to have your kids go out with your keeping Halloween safe is very important, not neighbors, girl scout or cub scout troop, only for the safety of the kids, but also to keep or even cousins. Always make sure there is the magical feeling of the night. Here are a few some sort of adult supervision. tips to help keep your little ones safe while trick or treating this year: In case you do get separated from your CHECK THE WEATHER AND BE PREPARED Chances are it’ll be chilly, and if it isn’t when you head out, it will be by the time you head back as most fall nights are. reminders to practice and are important things to know for every day too. TRICK-OR-TREATING ETIQUETTE Make sure to only visit homes with a porch light on and only approach doors that are well lit. This one can be tricky these days with automatic lights and decor. Use your best judgment and always remind the kids to never enter a home or car for a treat! STAY VISIBLE If your kids are going to be out after dark then blinking LED safety lights are a great addition to the back of their costume or candy bag! Pick them up at any sporting goods store or order from Amazon. Not only will they stand out for you to see, but they’ll also attract the attention of others, keeping them extra safe. Reflective tape is another option that will make your child more visible when added to the back of their costumes or all sides of their candy bag.

BE COMFORTABLE While we know some costumes require the right shoe (hello Cinderella), let’s be real on Halloween night while trickor-treating, no one wants their feet to be uncomfortable. Most costumes can handle rain boots or tennis shoes depending on the weather. Remember, the longer your feet feel good, the more candy you can get! Also, try to keep props to a minimum. If it’s part of the costume, make sure they are easily carried and it doesn’t have sharp edges or points. Try adding a strap to a sword, shield or really anything, so they can be thrown over the shoulder or held on your child’s back while walking from house to house. ADVANCE PLANNING Decide what streets you want to hit and which you’ll skip before you head out. There’s nothing like walking a route that’s too far for a little and getting stuck carrying them home. Make sure the route you pick is manageable for whatever ages are heading out the door.
