TWO FRIENDS LAUNCH BADASSERY LIFE PODCAST CELEBRATING WOMEN’S STRENGTH & RESILIENCE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
believed in their mission and offered to volunteer time to edit segments.
Last fall Kelly Young realized that she missed writing, so she decided to start a blog called “Badassery Life”, all about connecting with ordinary women doing extraordinary things.
“This is a personal passion project for all involved,” Young says. “None of us are getting paid.”
thing with my badass friend?” says Young, president of Baise Communications.
They launched the podcast in January of 2020 and began sharing stories of resilience, strength, bravery and transformation. One story chronicled a domestic violence survivor whose estranged husband came to her house “I didn’t care if anybody read it,” Young and asked, “Are you ready to die today?” says. “It was more for me because I get He proceeded to brutally murder their so inspired, motivated and moved by toddler, then came after her. She escaped women’s stories.” and has since become an advocate against gun violence. Stoesz Kersh was all in, and in uplifting females. As for the podcast “These women are impactful and are the pair set out to bring their idea to life. partnership, it seemed like a natural fit from effecting positive change holistically,” Young They gathered equipment and recruited the start. says. “They are badasses in many different like-minded females to help them in their facets of their life. empowering women. If we can change one life or impact one person by a story we’ve told, that’s the purpose.” The initial idea for the concept came after Young wrote her first blog highlighting a friend’s accomplishment of running three half-marathons in three days, in three national parks. Her friend confided that being an accomplished runner is not what she felt made her a badass - that came from the fact that she had overcome sexual abuse as a child. “If you want to share that story, I think that makes me more of a badass,” the friend said. Young and Stoesz Kersh believe that every woman has a story, and they are happy to provide a platform in which females can share those stories. They keep the podcasts between 30 and 35 minutes in length so that commuters can listen on their drive to or from work. The podcasts are aired every two weeks on Monday mornings.

In one of the podcasts, a woman chronicles leaving her job and volunteering her way around the world for an entire year. In another, a mother talks about her son, who had been a victim of gun violence. Shot in the head at the age of 16, his skull was shattered, taking away his ability to walk or talk again. Young maintains that the greatest thing about the interviews is the way listeners connect with the females in purposeful, relatable, meaningful ways. Young and Stoesz Kersh’s hope is that they are not only empowering the women they are interviewing, but also empowering those experiencing the podcasts.
“
October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and these friends are proud to celebrate such an accomplishment. “Women play so many different roles,” Young says. “We are entrepreneurs, coaches, moms, taxi drivers and advocates. Each role is equally important, but to be a womanowned business is a challenge that should be celebrated and recognized.” Born in Savannah, Georgia, Stoesz Kersh was raised by her grandparents in Linton, Indiana, after her military father died in a helicopter crash one month before she was born. Young, a mother of two, is glad her podcast serves to inspire her daughter. “She’s even opened my eyes to some girls and women we should feature,” Young says. The pair feel the podcast may be especially healing right now, when people might be suffering after months of social isolation. “People are feeling alone,” Stoesz Kersh says. “Hearing these stories enables women to identify with others on some level.” Young adds that feel-good stories are perhaps what many people might need at the moment. “We want to find the positive beauty in the world,” she says. COFFEE & THE ARTS
Owner Vivian Lawhead
SOHO CAFE & GALLERY OPERATES WITH ARTS & COMMUNITY IN MIND Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Linda Oldiges
SoHo Cafe & Gallery on South Rangeline Road in Carmel is truly a hometown establishment that supports the arts. Besides being longtime residents, proprietors Vivian and Larry Lawhead have deep roots within the Carmel community. As a result, the family-owned cafe not only serves up tasty beverages and treats, but also promotes local artists and causes.
“We feel such a part of the Carmel community, especially the old Carmel,” Vivian Lawhead says. “My dad, a builder, moved my mom and me to Carmel in the late ‘50s when I was a preschooler. My husband was born here. My first job was in downtown Carmel at my dad’s real estate office. Our four kids were born here and all six of us are Carmel High School grads. I taught in Carmel Clay Schools for years - first, fourth and fifth grades. Then I was media specialist at Carmel Middle School, 10 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atCarmel.com
where I attended years before.” Ten years ago, Lawhead inherited what was then called Mohawk Shopping Center. At that time the brick-and-frame center, which was built between 1970 and 1973, was 75% occupied and needed a facelift. The Lawhead family realized it could be a great opportunity for growing businesses as well as a way to promote Carmel. “One of our sons is in commercial real estate,” Lawhead says. “He told us, ‘It’s an

old building but look what we could do with it.’ We did all the work ourselves. Our goal was to fill the center up and we did. People started paying attention, and gradually I began hearing people give directions by saying, ‘It’s over by the SoHo Cafe.’” Recently, the cafe’s SoHo To Go coffee vehicle has been traveling to neighborhoods, schools and offices. After not being used for more than four years, the Lawheads spent the early part of the summer fixing it up, and it was on the road in early August. Along with high-quality pastries and bagels, the truck has a full espresso bar
on board. It visits locations within an approximate radius of eight to 10 miles. A two-hour time slot can be requested by calling the cafe. Popular times have been mornings and around 3:00 p.m. to beat afternoon slumps. Since one barista operates the truck, it is best used for small groups. “Using the SoHo To Go coffee truck again was in response to this time of COVID,” Lawhead says. “We were shut down for almost eight weeks. We aren’t a big carryout restaurant - besides organic espresso beverages and over 20 varieties of brewedonsite teas, beer and wine, we serve sandwiches and salads. We are fortunate to have a big patio and old-time retail space atCarmel.com / OCTOBER 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 11
inside the cafe. In May we sponsored a Mosaics and Wine class. Everyone was able to spread out and wore masks.” From the beginning, the concept behind the business has been to give back to the community by way of the art world. Pieces are sold on consignment, and the entire gallery side of the cafe is covered in works by Hamilton County artists. Greeting cards, photos, jewelry and large pieces from local artisans are available for sale. “Many of our relatives are artists, musicians and singers,” Lawhead says. “Larry is on the boards of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and the Indianapolis Brass choir. We wanted to pull in the
arts by having live music and showcasing artists. There is a waiting list for artists to have their work hung on the gallery wall. Many of them have never had their pieces displayed anywhere else.” The cafe’s Facebook page and Instagram feed keep customers informed about upcoming events. Besides art classes for children and adults, SoHo also allows nonprofit organizations to hold events at the facility. The Carmel Arts Council, which promotes student art, has held its annual local art fundraiser within the cafe’s large interior space. The facility has hosted music on the patio, birthday parties, class reunions, rehearsal dinners and even a wedding.

“We do all we can to promote the community but still sustain ourselves,” Lawhead says. “We don’t charge nonprofit charities for space. We let them cater in as long as the food is from a commercial kitchen, and they buy the drinks from us. This fall, plans are in the works for the Carmel Symphony Orchestra to hold concerts in the middle of the center’s large parking lot. It will be sort of like going to a drive-in movie. We will have the coffee truck out.” Lawhead is quick to praise her staff. “They are loyal, hardworking, friendly and willing to help in any way,” she says. “Our baristas know people’s names and their orders. So many customers make it a point to stop and tell me what great staff members we have.”

MS. SEW AND SEW SEWING STUDIO AND PRESCHOOL Amy Crispin 317-313-2462
I’m driven to teach kids and adults ways to tap into their inner creator. A way to find themselves by expressing themselves through working with their hands. For so long if you were artistic or crafty or enjoyed the home arts; cooking, sewing, crafting, home decorating, and woodworking you were looked down upon. You were considered too domestic, simple, or antifeminist. But there is nothing more powerful for women than the ability to create something out of nothing with their own hands. The same goes for children. As we emphasize math and science we have de emphasized the use of our hands to create. Children are struggling to use scissors, hold a pencil, sign their names, or thread a needle. I am elated to empower young kids with the ability to do all of those things and more! I love teaching children to create and be independent!

Rachel Priddy 317-459-3553
“If you can be happy doing anything else in the world besides opening a coffee shop, then do that.” I gulped the first time I heard these words, but I have embraced them and feel absolutely confident at their truth. We received our Certificate of Occupancy to open our shop on March 19th, the day Governor Holcomb announced the closure of dining indoors. We opened our drive thru anyways, but there would be no grand opening celebration; our sales were a fraction of what I had hoped for; and I would be serving my customers while wearing a mask — trading smiling, warm greetings for emotionless, mask-wearing faces. Still, the reasons I aspired to opening a café have not changed… it is a microcosm of life to be shared with our community, our baristas, and my family, teaching work ethic, character, service, and experiencing joy.

JOY IN A BASKET
Goodness Gracious Picnic Basket Catering is a Big Hit Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Kelli White
When Tobi Mares moved to Carmel, she was impressed by all the community had to offer - especially outdoor events like concerts in the park. A season ticket holder to Conner Prairie’s Symphony on the Prairie, she began putting together picnic baskets to take to the popular event. Fellow concertgoers soon noticed her baskets and asked if they could purchase one.
When people learn of her picnic basket business, reactions tend to be positive. “They’re in love with the picnic and the whole idea behind it,” Mares says. “That motivates me even more.”
Mares has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, and began doing apprenticeship work in local eateries to learn the ropes. Last spring she was set to sign a lease for her own place when the coronavirus led to government-mandated shutdowns. Though the restaurant dream was temporarily on hold, she continued Mares delights in crafting dishes like lemon making picnic baskets all summer for folks who were eager to have picnics in their dill tuna salad sandwiches, teriyaki tofu front yards while socially distancing club sandwiches, Italiano skewers, Greek with neighbors. salads and more. Every sandwich comes with fruit, a side, and a fun, fancy fortune cookie with an inspirational message. Side With fall approaching, Mares has launched a new line of homemade soups, which she choices include sweet potato chips, white delivers to customers’ doors in glass jars bean hummus, German potato salad and so they can simply heat and eat. Options more. include Hungarian mushroom, a ketofriendly sweet potato puree, chicken and Mares, who can easily spend six hours pasta, a dense beef bourguignon, and her a day in her own kitchen creating food, grandpa’s recipe for cream of onion. maintains that simple is better when it comes to cooking. In addition, Mares has a wellness basket that includes a homemade, high-nutrient “I’m not into foo-foo cooking and while I bone broth, which can be enhanced with appreciate culinary cuisine, honestly one noodles, chicken or vegetables. This basket of my favorite meals is a fried bologna sandwich,” Mares says. “But I do add Cajun also includes coffee cups, antioxidant green tea, vitamins and more. seasoning.” “Families were getting off of work and grabbing something quick at Kroger to take to these outdoor events,” says Mares, who was eventually inspired to launch Goodness Gracious, a picnic basket catering business.

“I took the concept of mind, body and spirit, and put it in a basket,” says Mares, who credits her husband Brad for providing the love and support she needs to always forge ahead. “Honestly, 2020 would have been disastrous were it not for Brad, my biggest cheerleader.” During the pandemic, Mares has used her spare time to pen a book called “Goodness Gracious,” which is a memoir about food, struggle and perseverance. She hopes the launch of her book will coincide with the opening of her restaurant, as she’s considering opening her own eatery after all - at 146th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway. It would offer breakfast, brunch, lunch and baskets. For Mares, Goodness Gracious is about keeping her grandmother’s spirit alive with picnics and comfort food, by way of old family recipes. “The whole concept of Goodness Gracious is really about keeping the quilt of America alive through the sharing of food,” Mares says. Owner Suzanne Deason
VILLAGE HOME ZIONSVILLE PROVIDES HOME DECOR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne
From 1999 until 2006, Suzanne Deason owned and operated At Home in the Village, a furniture store located on Zionsville’s Main Street in a historic church space. In 2006 she and her husband Dion, who is also her business partner, moved to Dion’s home state of South Carolina where they renovated the former mayor’s mansion. “It was the whole ‘Designing Women,’ Suzanne Sugarbaker life,” says Deason with a chuckle. Though they enjoyed the charm of living in the south, the couple always knew they wanted to come back to Zionsville as they appreciated the deep sense of community, and the way residents support local businesses.
“We missed Zionsville a lot and still had friends and clients here,” Deason says. Last year the pair returned to their roots and reopened their furniture store during Thanksgiving weekend in a different location. Since they are now located on East Cedar Street they changed their name slightly, to Village Home Zionsville. Though the name is different, the concept is the same. Customers can buy off the floor in the shop, or custom order items. “Most of our vendors are designer oriented so you have options of fabric, finish, sizing - things you might not get in a big-box store that has just the name-brand stuff,” Deason says. Deason does full-service interior design as well including kitchen and bath, and the business offers carpets, rugs and 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atCarmel.com
flooring. Because they buy direct from a manufacturer, they can save customers money while putting a comprehensive look together. “From A to Z we can do it all, though a lot of people don’t know that when they first walk into the store,” Deason says. “They think we’re just a little furniture shop, but they soon realize the scope of what all we can do.” That scope includes new construction, renovations, and both commercial and residential projects. When working to create an interior design concept, Deason asks her clients to share color and style preferences, as well as likes and dislikes. “Sometimes people know what they don’t like more than they know what they do,” she says. “That helps too. I just like to get that communication going. Sometimes
people will say, ‘I don’t care what you do as long as it fits my lifestyle.’” Though the showroom is not huge, the business carries more than 150 lines of furniture, accessories and lighting. Deason can access inventory information at any hour of the day to see what’s coming. Many of Deason’s clients have their own professional location or office space, and once Deason has worked on a house, clients will sometimes invite her to help enhance their work environment. She has also worked on branding for clients. For example, one of Deason’s clients wanted to open a yogurt shop but had no clue where to start. “They requested that we do something fun and funky so we branded their color, style and all of their machines,” Deason says. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Deason had to adjust like many other business owners. Though she was forced to close her doors, she made herself available to the community by putting a sign in her front window that said, “If you need to get in to look at something, call and make an appointment or reach out on Facebook.” She continued to sell furniture, and many people were grateful because they were forced to start working and schooling at home, and as such needed chairs, desks, and tables big enough for kids to sit around. “None of us saw it coming so we all had to think on our feet,” Deason says. One endeavor that has helped Deason through this season of uncertainty is her involvement with the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce. “I’ve experienced chambers in other areas, and the Zionsville Chamber is spot-on,” Deason says. “They are always asking what they can do for us businesses and how they can help.” She references the weekly “Night on the Bricks” event that the Chamber quickly atCarmel.com / OCTOBER 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 21
organized this summer to increase foot traffic to downtown establishments during the pandemic. “You can’t make somebody shop or spend money, but you can expose them to what makes up Zionsville so that down the road when they need that lamp or that dress, they will think of downtown Zionsville stores,” says Deason, adding that the Chamber has also done a great job of drawing attention to women merchants in Zionsville. Deason is proud to be one of them. “I love what I do,” Deason adds. “I’ve managed through the years and survived running a business through a pandemic, so obviously something is clicking and we’re doing something right.” Village Home Zionsville is located at 27 East Cedar Street in Zionsville. THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN RIDES AGAIN AT CONNER PRAIRIE FALL FESTIVAL It takes a lot more than a pandemic to keep the Headless Horseman down. He rides again this year at Conner Prairie in Fishers, just in time to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This Halloween season, however, the Headless Horseman will have to follow the social distancing guidelines in place at Conner Prairie’s annual fall festival. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Conner Prairie has made several changes to Headless Horseman operations in order to ensure public safety while still delivering a fun family event,” says Christine DeJoy, director of public affairs at Conner Prairie. “These changes have been made in accordance with CDC guidelines, and have been approved by the Fishers Department of Health.” The Conner Prairie staff has multiple activities planned. “Guests will receive a complimentary bag of a ball and a ring necessary to play games,” DeJoy says. “Bounce houses, the corn sandbox, karaoke, and other games and activities not conducive to social distancing have been replaced with more suitable activities.” The Apple Store at Conner Prairie is currently closed, but apple cider slushies will be available in select food tents. “Access to the corn maze and haunted corn maze will be limited to groups of 10 every three minutes, to ensure adequate spacing,” DeJoy says. “The crowds will only be a maximum of 2,000 people per night.” Guests, staff members, volunteers and vendors are required to wear masks except when consuming food or drinks. All shows at the festival will be performed on open-air stages or in open-sided pavilions. atCarmel.com / OCTOBER 2020 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 25
“Guests do not have to submit to a temperature check, but are asked to stay home if they are sick or part of a vulnerable population,” DeJoy says. “Staff, volunteers and vendors are required to pass a daily temperature check and health questionnaire.” Guests are required to purchase tickets for specific event dates. Tickets are only available online in advance of desired event dates. “There’s always a lot of excitement for our Headless Horseman festival,” DeJoy says. “This year we had to make revisions to festival staples, but we think the outcome will leave our guests happily satisfied with some of our changes.” DeJoy says this year marks the 37th Headless Horseman fall festival. Festival activities will run throughout the month of October. Many families enjoy the haunted hayride, during which they are chased down by the Headless Horseman. Attendees can also check out a Legend of Sleepy Hollow theatrical show, a monster museum and much more. The midway will feature games including Ghost Pitch, Cauldron Toss, Pirate Ring Toss, Plinko, Monster Long Jump and Soccer Putt-Putt. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers. Fore more info, call 317-776-6000. For festival event dates, ticket info, an activities list and more, visit connerprairie.org.

LILY + SPARROW Women-Owned Boutique Celebrates Grand Opening at Carmel City Center
Writer / Shelly Sack Photographer / Amy Payne
Jen and Steph Miller always dreamed of opening their own women’s clothing shop. That dream came true in 2014 in Fishers, when a commercial space became vacant and they saw an opportunity to open Lily & Sparrow Boutique. Nearly seven years later, the sisters have relocated to the Carmel City Center, with a soft opening in early September. According to Jen, the move came with several benefits for a small business - a storefront and street signage to attract passersby and motorists, along with customer traffic in the walkable business district. “We had a great relationship with everyone in Fishers and leaving was definitely bittersweet, but this is where we needed to be,” she says. Jen says it’s been nice joining the community, in part because the building is home to many other small businesses including several owned by women. The 1,630-square-foot space has white walls and a mix of modern and bohemian design elements.

on pieces that are trendy yet enduring and have classic styles and shapes. For those who struggle with putting an outfit together or choosing a look for a specific event, Lily & Sparrow offers personal styling sessions.
“It’s a very clean setting with natural elements,” Jen says. “We want it to feel light and bright in here. We worked really hard to create a safe space so you can feel inspired and at peace. It’s an escape from day-to-day life.” Lily & Sparrow offers a selection of women’s clothing in sizes extra small through large, balanced out with shoes, belts, hats, jewelry and other accessories. The sisters make an effort to procure brands made in the United States and items from companies that contribute to charitable causes. The sisters both participate in product buying. They select inventory with a focus
Heading into the colder season, Jen says women’s clothing trends are headed toward different colors than previous seasons. “There’s a lot of brown and earthy tones, which we haven’t seen in a couple years,” she says. “We’re seeing faux-leather trends in shorts and tops - more than a leather jacket. A return of animal print trend and tie-dye, which we’ve seen all year long, is being transitioned with fall colors.” Jen adds that the work-from-home boom has people looking for more basic and cozy items, including slippers, socks and lounge collections. For holiday gatherings, she says sequins remain popular. 28 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atCarmel.com
The sisters are strong business partners who both bring their own strengths as co-owners. “She’s wonderful with people,” Jen says of Steph. “She keeps us on track with everything. We get along so well. It’s special that we get to work together, build this business together and live out our dream. She’s my best friend.” Steph says that while she may take the lead on behind-the-scenes responsibilities, Jen excels at creative aspects. “She works on display and merchandising, and I do more of the business end, so we balance each other out very well,” Steph says. “She has a way of making people feel at home and comfortable, and her personality is sweet and welcoming.” As they continue to settle into their new location in Carmel, the women have plans that include hosting pop-up shops, private party bookings and possibly extended hours for the holiday season.

rand Champion Janel Keesling knows what it’s like to walk into a car dealership as a woman and feel pressured and overwhelmed.
I LOVE HOW EASY AND CONVENIENT IT WAS. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE AND VERY INFORMATIVE. - DEBRA
“We’d like to think the world treats women equally, but there are presumed biases,” says Keesling, who, along with her husband Cole, owns CarSnoop, an innovative way to buy, lease or trade-in a vehicle from your phone, or computer. The beauty of CarSnoop is that dealerships don’t have any idea of the customer’s gender or race—only the city in which they reside. Hence, the buying experience is simplified. “In light of the pandemic, we’ve all changed the way we buy everything,” says Keesling, noting that consumers would rather browse for cars while relaxing on their back porch than wander countless dealerships.
I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW EASY IT WAS. I DOWNLOADED THE CARSNOOP APP FROM MY PHONE, PICKED OUT MY CAR AND CHOSE THE LOWEST PAYMENT. THE DEALERSHIP DELIVERED IT TO MY HOUSE.
“We do all the legwork and even have a full concierge service to find the car you desire,” says Keesling. “Want a blue 2020 Honda Accord with XYZ features? We’ll find the best offers from dealerships.” CarSnoop enables the buyer to do all the paperwork from home and then they deliver the car directly to your home.
- AMY
CARSNOOP MADE THE PROCESS SO EASY AND MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS IN CONTROL OF BUYING MY NEW CAR! FINALLY A WAY TO BUY A CAR WITHOUT ALL OF THE HASSLE!” - TRAE
“You literally don’t have to go anywhere,” says Keesling. “It’s a stress-free experience all the way around.”
