Story & Photos Provided by Painting with a Twist

After the stress of a global pandemic, everyone could use a night out with friends, a loved one, or just a night away from the house, add a glass of wine, beer or soda, music, throw in paint and a canvas, and you have Painting with a Twist. Painting with a Twist, located in Carmel, is America’s original and largest paint n’ sip franchise brand. “We’re an instructor-led party with paint, canvas or wood board and a beverage,” says Kerry Sawyer, owner of the Carmel location. “We have studio painting classes that are open to the public that includes family classes, blacklight, trivia nights, ladies and date nights, as well as offering private parties, team-building events, virtual classes, take-home kits, and off-site events. Guests, after reserving online, come in, have a glass

perfect match for Ms. Sawyer.

“Our private parties are a great way to celebrate birthdays, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, anniversaries, company parties or team-building events,” Sawyer says. “They get to choose their painting from our art gallery of more than 11,000 paintings. Then our instructor guides them step-by-step through the entire process.”

“Once a month, my studio hosts a painting event that raises funds for local nonprofit organizations,” Sawyer says. “It’s a fun and creative way to give back and support the causes I love.”

Sawyer knows from experience that teambuilding events are a great way to improve company culture and engage with them outside of work. Prior to purchasing Painting with a Twist, Sawyer was one of the studio’s best clients. Sawyer owned 45 haircut locations and would host her Team Appreciation Events at the studio. She not only brought her team to the studio, but her children, family, cheer moms and friends. “Every Time I was at Painting with a Twist, it was always an amazing experience,” she says. “My guests and I always had a blast painting and socializing. We left happy and with a painting that we created.” After unforeseen life-changing events, Sawyer sold her haircut locations and wanted to pursue something that makes a difference in people’s lives, something she could make profitable but also make her soul happy. Painting with a Twist was a 4 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

She found another surprising benefit of ownership, Painting with a Purpose.

Painting with a Twist has donated more than $5M to nonprofit organizations across the nation. Sawyer is committed to giving back to the local community, one painting at a time. “Painting builds self-esteem and is very therapeutic,” Sawyer adds. “Painting with a Twist produces a relaxing, open environment where painters feel safe to explore their own creativity. We truly are helping people. “Customers come into my studio, and they literally transform in the two hours they’re here. They come in unsure, not thinking they can create the artwork chosen and they leave ecstatic, relaxed and revived. We’re creating a carefree escape for people to reconnect, de-stress, rejuvenate and rekindle spirits, at the same time I’m allowing artists that I employ to pursue their passion.” They also offer Twist at Home kits. “With COVID, we wanted to continue

to extend that sense of peace to our community by offering them the opportunity to do that from home,” Sawyer says. ‘Our kits allow our customers to paint from the safety of their own home. Whether you choose to have a moment to yourself, plan a date night, or make it into a familyfun event, Twist at Home kits are a great way to shift into that imaginative mode where worries seem to fade. Inside your Twist at Home kit, you’ll have everything you need to create your very own masterpiece including an instructed video. Painting with a Twist also offers many different outlets for people to escape from the daily grind. “You can find all of our information online at paintingwithatwist.com/carmel,” Sawyer says. “It’s time to plan something fun, therapeutic and out of the ordinary. Sip, socialize and create. Come in and give your night a Twist.”

The team at Rusted Window, a flower market, home decor shop and gift store, recently celebrated its two-year anniversary at the Indiana Design Center on South Rangeline Road. Stacy Molander, owner and creative director, strives to procure unique design elements that make her business different than a traditional flower and decor shop. Besides offering items that can’t be found in typical retail stores, Rusted Window specializes in design planning for weddings and other events. Although Molander studied interior and floral design at IUPUI, she worked as an account manager for Pulte Homes of Indiana. A 2003 cancer diagnosis made her reassess what she truly wanted to do, and with the support of friends, her career began to move in another direction.

“At that time, I decided I needed to embrace a creative outlet,” Molander says. “I started dabbling in floor design. A couple of girlfriends pushed me on. In 2009, out of my home, I started doing weddings in Carmel and Fishers. At first I missed a steady paycheck, but I kept going. [Two years ago], we moved the business from East Carmel Drive to the location we have now.” Molander is enjoying her current location in the Indiana Design Center, where she says a spirit of collaboration abounds. “I love being at the Design Center,” she says. “I appreciate the marketing and cultivation they do for the businesses there. find themselves entering many of the stores since the businesses complement each other.” One type of product that sets Rusted Window apart is curated gift baskets for all ages and occasions. The baskets are assembled in a thoughtful way, using information about the recipient provided by the purchaser. The result has personal meaning and doesn’t give the impression that it was grabbed off of a shelf in a big-box store. Likewise, the shop’s design services strive to give clients a result that stands apart from their neighbors. Offerings include silk arrangements, candle holders, pillows and wall art that are not common or stale. Also available are creative, upcycled pieces that contribute to a home’s unique and personal look. “COVID affected our walk-in traffic, but during the time we were shut down we still did local deliveries for gift baskets and flowers,” Molander says. “Many of the weddings we had booked were rescheduled or postponed. The upside is that our online business tripled.” Customers are drawn to Rusted Window through word of mouth and social media. Others who frequent the shop are recipients of flower arrangements or gift baskets. Some customers take advantage of the flower subscription service, which has a variety of price points and is offered on a weekly or monthly basis. “Our customers get our personal attention,” Molander says. “Suggestions are made according to the information about their lives and their preferences that they give us. We want people to come back because they are happy with their purchase.” Rusted Window is located at 200 South Rangeline Road, Suite 120B at the Indiana Design Center. Rashad and Brittany Cunningham

MEET THE

CUNNINGHAM FAMILY Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Justin Sicking

Since meeting at a Brownsburg carnival back in 1999, Brittany and Rashad Cunningham have experienced all kinds of ups and downs in their relationship. “Things got extremely difficult out at TriWest for me after I started dating Rashad,” Brittany remembers of her high school years. “I was getting death threats, and the school system wouldn’t intervene in any kind of way. I begged my mom. I was 17 and I said, ‘Mom, please, I need your signature to just sign me out of school.’ I was absolutely miserable.” After going through this early rough patch, Brittany and Rashad’s relationship didn’t get any easier. The couple married in 2004 and had their daughter Genesis, but Rashad was dealing with his own demons.

“I was an alcoholic,” Rashad says. “I was addicted to porn. You name it. I cheated on my wife and was a deadbeat father for the first five years. We were just up and down from 2004 to 2011.” It wasn’t until the Cunninghams attended a church in the Brownsburg area that things really started to turn around for the family. Rashad was first drawn to attend an event at the church called Soulful Saturday because of his love for hip-hop, but the family found themselves returning for more services at the church after an initial positive experience. “I ended up surrendering my life to Christ, and my whole world got turned upside down in 2011,” Rashad says. “We switched around and became this Christian family. A short four years later, we were pastoring a church in Brownsburg called Church on the Rock.” 12 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

While serving as the pastor at Church on the Rock, Rashad saw his congregation grow from 20 to 300 over a five-year span. Eventually, he was asked to guest preach at Mercy Road Church in Carmel, which led him to the latest chapter of his life. “The message was very well received, not just by the church but by the community,” Rashad says. “The lead pastor, Josh Husmann, reached out to me and asked if we could have breakfast. He said, ‘We could really use somebody, A, to preach the way you preach, and B, to come and start making moves in the community - moves that will stretch our community but also help it heal in ways that we’ve never seen before.’ ” Mercy Road wound up offering Rashad a new position as the church’s teaching and community pastor. Initially, he says he and Brittany were wary about moving from

Brownsburg to Carmel. “We had our reservations about the north side,” Rashad says. “We grew up on the west side, and there’s a stigma about Hamilton County.” After taking some time to pray on the matter, however, they concluded that the teaching and community pastor role at Mercy Road was perfect for Rashad. “We came to the conclusion that the stigma was the exact reason we needed to be there,” Rashad says. “We believe in breaking barriers of all sorts - not just racial barriers but socioeconomic barriers, education barriers, tax-bracket barriers and anything that separates people. We feel like God has raised us to help people meet in the middle and see what it feels like to see people and not politics or Facebook posts.” Since moving to Carmel, Brittany and

Rashad have made their fair share of adjustments. While she’s enjoyed getting out to restaurants in the area such as Blaze Pizza, Brittany admits she’s not a fan of roundabouts. Rashad, on the other hand, loves them. “After about three weeks of being out here, I was like, ‘This is the most amazing thing. There is never traffic,’” Rashad says. Additionally, Brittany says she’s had to get used to the fast-paced culture of Carmel. “When it comes to the people, it is a lot different,” Brittany says. “I feel like everywhere I go, whether it be the grocery store, Walmart or whatever, everybody’s in a rush.”

area thus far, Rashad has worked to meet Carmel residents where they are, in hopes of bringing them closer together. “When there’s racial tension, I’m the one that goes in the middle to bring people towards each other,” Rashad says. “When people are fighting over vaccines or no vaccines, mask or no mask, Trump or Biden, I’m the guy that goes in the middle with no political agenda and no bent in any way.” As the Cunningham family continues to make an impact in Carmel, they hope to leave a legacy rooted in bringing people closer to each other.

“I want to be remembered for showing the light,” Brittany says. “We’re different. We’re peacemakers. We’re not on one side of the In addition to his role at Mercy Road, fence. We’re not about the politics. We’re Rashad has also gotten involved with Synergize, a local group dedicated to making not about how much money is in your bank account. That’s just not us. SIGN OF THE TIMES YARD CARD QUEEN BRINGS JOY IN BIG PACKAGES

Christina Campins-Schneider Writer / Megan Arszman Photography Provided

The pandemic has changed the way many families celebrate milestones, holidays and birthdays, often bringing the celebration back home. Large birthday parties are replaced by some families with large celebration cards adorning front yards across Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield. By day, Christina Campins-Schneider works with her husband, Josh Schneider, at their realty company, Schneider Reality.

In the early morning hours, however, she operates Yard Card Queen, decorating front yards of families who are looking for a different way to celebrate events such as birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and homecomings.

card in a front yard to celebrate the season.

“As soon as I saw what yard cards were, I knew that this was perfect for me,” Campins-Schneider says. “I love kids, I love to entertain and I love to make people smile. It struck a chord in my heart.”

Children have a special place in CampinsSchneider’s heart. She was a running coach for the Pup Running program at Cherry Tree Elementary for four years. Last year was supposed to be her official last year as the coach, but the pandemic shortened that final season. Her work with Yard Card Queen has helped fulfill her love of encouraging children and their families.

Yard Card Queen was launched in Texas in 2020, and now has a presence in seven states. Campins-Schneider started her local Yard Card Queen business in August, and she averages around 50 cards per month already. She started a special card in December called “You’ve Been Elfed,” and she would plant a small, Christmas-related 20 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“I started the elf cards because I knew kids weren’t going to be able to see Santa like they’re used to, and I wanted to bring a little bit of the holiday spirit to them,” she says.

“This whole thing was born from the pandemic, but it’s been a blessing,” she says. The messages, phone calls and emails

Campins-Schneider receives from family members, after her Yard Card services have been rendered, bring her fulfillment. “I get the biggest high out of doing the cards because I’m bringing joy to everybody,” she says. “I don’t enjoy waking up at 4:30 in the morning, but once I’m out there and doing it and I see the finished product, I’m excited and can’t wait to see the pictures and hear the reactions.” The avid runner and mother of three seems to have an unending supply of energy that serves her well, balancing two businesses and family life. Because Carmel Clay School District leaders changed school scheduling due to the pandemic, Campins-Schneider can prepare a house with her yard cards in the early hours of the morning and be back in time to get her kids ready for school without too much worry. Sometimes the cards are a family affair for Campins-Schneider and her children. Isabella is 22 years old and a senior at Purdue University. Sophia, 13, and Amelia, 11, both attend Clay Middle School. “My 11-year-old loves to do the ding-dongditch with me when I’m staking a house,” Campins-Schneider says. Each card typically costs $95 (birthdays for multiples are extra) and remains planted TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 21

in a yard for the whole day. There is an additional charge for cards to stay in a yard for an extra day. Campins-Schneider typically spends about an hour planning and pulling cards, and then 30 to 60 minutes planting them in a customer’s front yard. She takes great care in getting to know each card recipient, and strives to personalize everything including the colors and accessories. She feels that this highly personalized touch makes the experience special for her customers. Campins-Schneider says she’s had an uptick

in grandparents gifting cards for their grandchildren as a special way to celebrate.

is all about Carmel and the communities surrounding it.

She’s done a few cards to thank first responders and essential workers, and feels such gestures are important given the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I moved to Carmel when I was 13 and graduated from Carmel High School,” she says. “I moved back here after college and we are raising our family here. There’s just a lot of great things about Carmel, and I’m proud to be part of that.”

“I feel those people should be recognized, especially during this time of year, and this is one way I can help do that,” she says. If it means helping to support the community she loves, Campins-Schneider

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT THE ROI SEARCH GROUP PROVIDES A ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR RECRUITMENT, CAREER TRANSITION & TRAINING Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Robby Berry

Four years ago, Stacey McCreery organically built ROI Search Group (ROISG), a local, women-owned recruitment and executive search firm offering permanent placement, contract staffing, outplacement services, and training. She had no problem choosing a name for her company.

100% qualified, plus have the diversity representing that community. Last year, they placed 49% diverse candidates. While that’s nothing new for ROI Search Group, McCreery emphasizes how important it is to represent the communities served. “If you have a Burmese population, for instance, you need to have representation of that population in the candidates you supply to the client,” McCreery adds.

“I wanted people to know when you do business with us, there will always be a return on your investment,” says McCreery, who started the firm after working for a decade as a hiring manager at a large academic health system. Having been in the shoes of hiring managers, she knew their struggles firsthand.

Over the past four years, the company has continued to expand their services as clients’ needs have grown. Their core services include providing a 360 solution with talent management in regards recruiting both Permanent “Recruiters are a dime a dozen,” says McCreery, President. “What Placement and Executive search makes us unique is that we’ve spent time on the other side.” (for specialized searches or VP and above), Contract Services (with When clients ask for help in locating just the right candidate, the a specialization in Revenue Cycle ROISG team is proactive in finding the best individual for each and IT, Epic & Cerner, Software position. This is why since the firm’s inception they have only had a 1% turnover in all of their placements. When they reach out to candidates, they get to know the person. “People want you to care about them before you pitch a job,” McCreery says. “Strong communication leads to really good outcomes when you listen to people and understand what’s important to them.” At ROISG, it’s not just about checking a box. “We’re not just going to check a box when the person doesn’t meet any of your criteria,” McCreery says. It’s important candidates meet 100% of the requirements of the position they are being recruited.” For instance, if a company is seeking a technical or nursing candidate with ample experience, ROISG will find somebody

Kelli McLaughlin

Writer / Stephanie Dolan Photographer / Linda Oldiges

When one thinks of giving back, an upscale boutique doesn’t always come to mind. However, a roughly 3,000-square-foot space in Clay Terrace is breaking the mold for what constitutes a great way for consumers to shop high-end items, while also contributing to local organizations that are doing great work in the community.

“I had no experience in fashion or merchandising,” she says. “Several years ago my brother and his wife adopted two brothers from China. I watched them go through the process of raising tens of thousands of dollars for each boy that they wanted to bring home, and it kind of got my mind spinning about how I could help people like that raise money for things that are important to them.”

McLaughlin says her kids were all in Clothes With a Cause was founded by Kelli performing arts at the time, and that she’d McLaughlin, who grew up in Carmel, only bought every candy bar and garden gnome temporarily leaving town to pursue a college possible for various fundraisers. degree in special education. 24 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“That’s not practical,” she says. “Then I started thinking about what people would want to buy. That’s when I started considering opening a clothing boutique and donating 10% of the profits, but my brother challenged me to think bigger. He said people are looking for donations from people with more zeros than just one.” That’s when Clothes With a Cause was born - a fundraising vehicle that would donate 100% of its profits to charitable organizations and causes. “Literally we started three and a half years ago with one rack of clothing in my living

To me, it doesn’t make any sense to write a check at the end of the month to support someone if I can’t support the process for the clothing creation, from how it’s made to how it’s distributed. I try to vet very carefully to make sure everyone is taken care of along the way.” Above all, McLaughlin is thankful to be able to give back within the community in which we was raised. “I’ve built my business from the beginning, one person at a time,” she says. “The Carmel community has embraced me for sure. It’s been a slow build and I’m okay with that. Carmel is my hometown, and I love it here. I wouldn’t want to raise my kids anywhere else, and I wouldn’t want my business to be anywhere else. Diverse Destination CLAY TERRACE PROVIDES FOOD, FASHION, FALL FUN AND FABULOUS ART

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Mariah Krafft

Clay Terrace is Carmel’s premier open-air shopping destination. The town center is home to more than 80 national and local retail, dining, specialty grocery, and entertainment options, as well as numerous events and activities throughout the year. Guests can visit national retailers and unique local boutiques alike, including

Whole Foods, Dry Goods, Lovesac, Lululemon and Sephora, as well as Luxe Home Interiors, Meridian Music Company and more.

Guests can choose from a variety of dining options to satisfy every palate, from fun, fast-casual eateries to local, premier restaurants including Cafe Patachou, Java House, Jimmy John’s, Pies & Pints, Kona “Visitors routinely share that they appreciate Grill and Prime 47. This fall, Harmony Poke the variety of tenants at Clay Terrace, which and Bubble Tea will open at Clay Terrace. makes it a convenient, one-stop destination that meets all of their needs,” says Jennifer “We want our guests to feel like they’re Jones, general manager at Clay Terrace. spending time in their own backyard, and we’ve designed the town center with this 28 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

in mind,” Jones says. “From the way tenant buildings line the sidewalk, to convenient up-front parking and spaces for bicycles, to the landscaping elements, soft seating areas and parklets, we want to evoke a friendly, neighborhood atmosphere.”

The 11 featured artists include Deonna Craig, Fitz, Gary Gee, Courtney Blayne McCrary Jr., Ess McKee, Amiah Mims, Ashley Nora, Nathaniel Kyng Rhodes, Rebecca Robinson, Harriet Watson and Kevin West.

As Clay Terrace prepares for pending developments, the leaders wanted to find creative ways to leverage transitory spaces at the town center. That’s precisely why they partnered with GANGGANG, a cultural development startup backed in part by the Central Indiana Community Foundation, whose mission is to promote and invest in cultural entrepreneurs. When Jones reached out to Malina Simone Jeffers, cofounder of GANGGANG, and told her that Clay Terrace leaders were working on a renovation project, Simone Jeffers proposed doing an art walk.

“My favorite part of installing this mural has been the opportunity to paint outdoors while meeting new people,” says Deonna Craig, president of XVIII Art Collective. “I love to paint and love to talk. Having an opportunity to share the story behind my artwork is just as fulfilling as actually creating it.”

“I suggested covering the boarded widows with art and culture instead of just ‘coming soon’ signs,” Simone Jeffers says. “I think that culture and creatives are what makes our cities the place we want to live, work and play.” GANGGANG commissioned 11 artists from XVIII Art Collective, which is a group of like-minded and civically engaged black visual artists in and around the Indianapolis metropolitan area, to install murals along the Art Walk. These artists come from professional and artistic backgrounds including graphic designers, digital artists, muralists, professors, art instructors and more. The art is a display of individual interpretations of family, entertainment and shopping with intentional pops of bright, vibrant images.

Rebecca Robinson, a mixed-media artist, focuses on figurative and abstract subjects, and especially loves working with nontraditional materials like concrete and tar. For the Art Walk, her mural, titled “Shopping Zen,” depicts a woman in a yoga pose holding two shopping bags. “My inspiration was to encourage people to enjoy being back outside, reconnecting with nature and enjoying the shopping experience,” says Robinson, who loves seeing how public art facilitates conversations. “Some people have never set foot in a gallery or museum. When you take artwork on the street and make it for the public, you reach an entire society. That’s essential in preserving the culture and our communities.” Amiah Mims, a conceptual artist, loves interacting with passersby as she works. “I enjoy the little moments exchanged between myself and a person I’ve never met before when I’m working,” Mims says. “It’s moments that may not have ever happened if the art wasn’t there to break the ice.” TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 29

This can be especially important in today’s world. “Artists are essential workers, and they’ve been called on a lot in the last 18 to 24 months,” Simone Jeffers says. “Maybe that’s because society knows to go to the creatives to lift our spirits. Maybe it’s an innate thing. Experiencing art reminds us of our humanity and our connection to one another.” “If everything in 2020 is about what separates people, whether that’s the pandemic or social justice and racial movement, culture is what brings people together,” adds Alan Bacon, co-founder of GANGGANG. “It’s through food, through storytelling, through experiencing art. That’s the focus of GANGGANG and why we appreciate this partnership with Clay Terrace.” Mims has seen firsthand how art can affect people simply by being present. “It has the power to bring perspective and understanding to topics such as race and inclusion, but that can only happen if and when the art reflecting these topics is being seen,” Mims says. “The narrative will always be the same if the same people are the only ones allowed to tell the story. In order for the narrating voice to change, the speakers have to change, meaning artists - and people in general, from various backgrounds and walks of life - need to have a place at the podium.” Clay Terrace is providing that podium, and it’s an ideal spot for the Art Walk because it’s a natural meeting place for shopping, eating and connecting.

STEP INSIDE A WORLD OF

PURE IMAGINATION

“That means it’s already a place that’s ready for more culture to exist,” Simone Jeffers says. Common-area amenities are a key element of Clay Terrace. Comfortable seating areas and parklets throughout the town center provide a place for guests to rest and relax while visiting. The seating area between Prodigy Burger & Bar and Pies & Pints, with the fireplace active on cooler days, is a fun location for families and friends to gather after a great meal. “We’re always looking for fun, exciting ways to engage the residents of Carmel,” Jones says.
