MAYORAL CANDIDATE
MILES NELSON A VISION FOR CARMEL'S FUTURE Writer / Natalie Gargiulo Photography Provided
R
aised with a strong ethos of community service and entrepreneurship, Carmel mayoral candidate Miles Nelson's upbringing has greatly influenced his vision for the city as well as his decision to run for mayor. “I grew up in a family where giving back to the community was very important as well as speaking up for people whose voices often go unheard,” Nelson says. “Championing different communities, advocating for them and standing up for one’s principles were fundamental values instilled in my family.”
Reflecting on his family's entrepreneurial spirit, Nelson shares the inspiring story of his father, who started working in a funeral home as a young boy and eventually purchased it at the age of 26. His mother, a small-business owner herself, instilled in him the values of hard work, community service and financial management, shaping his commitment to public service and economic development. “Our kitchen-table conversations were always about community service,” Nelson says. “Watching my parents work hard to make ends meet really influenced me and my sisters.”
8 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2023 / TownePost.com
Marked as the first time a democrat has ever won a seat on the Carmel City Council, Nelson, who was elected in 2019, has focused on issues that directly impact residents' lives, transcending political affiliations to prioritize the greater good. “Issues of safety, roads, infrastructure and schools are issues that affect the lives of people,” Nelson says. “These issues are not red or blue issues. These are people issues. Politics should be left at the door.” Pledging to continue the legacy of Mayor Brainard’s vision for Carmel, Nelson emphasizes the importance of building a city with a strong sense of community and identity. “Mayor Brainard has been a friend and a mentor to me,” he says. “One thing that binds us all together is the sense of community when living in Carmel, and I want to keep the city moving forward.” His dedication to community involvement has been a driving force throughout his career. With a history of serving on the Carmel City Council and numerous boards, Nelson's commitment to giving back is a central pillar of his candidacy.
With his focus on inclusivity, transparent governance and sustainable development, Miles Nelson's campaign for mayor embodies a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes the wellbeing and aspirations of the Carmel community.
“I've always been a big thinker - how can I contribute and how can I get involved?” Nelson says. “I get a great deal of pride and a sense of accomplishment by being a community contributor. People always ask me why I want to be mayor, and it's always an easy answer for me. This is what I wake up every morning thinking about. It’s my passion.”
“I want us to partner with our sister cities in Hamilton County, Boone County and Marion County,” Nelson says. “Competing with each other is thinking too small. The real competition is Nashville, Denver and Austin, among others, and I want to make sure that we can compete toe to toe with those places.”

MAYOR MINDED MAYORAL CANDIDATE SUE FINKAM OUTLINES “ELEVATE CARMEL” COMPREHENSIVE PLAN Writer / Alli Donovan Photography Provided
Meet Sue Finkam - local business owner, community leader, She is excited to be running for the mayor of Carmel to lead wife and mother all wrapped into one. She has been a crucial residents and businesses to greater heights. part of Carmel’s success in her past 12 years on the Carmel City Council, and she is ready to push Carmel into further What is Finkam’s plan as mayor of Carmel? success by becoming its next mayor. Finkam has developed a plan that allows Carmel to continue Finkam is the founder and chief executive officer of being recognized as a great place to live, work, raise a family FireStarter LLC, a certified woman-owned, full-service and retire, but this plan will also create an opportunity for marketing agency headquartered in Carmel. Carmel to become the best-run city in America. Finkam took a job in Carmel in 2005, and she and her family moved to the city in 2007. She has seen firsthand the commitment to excellence that the community of Carmel has, and she is dedicated to keeping it special. She has served in various roles on the city council, co-founded LetsTalkCarmel.com, a community transparency portal, and she serves as a member of the Hamilton County Solid Waste Board. She has previously served as the vice chair for the Hamilton County Economic Development Corporation and co-founded Carmel PorchFest.
Finkam has thoughtfully listened to residents, business owners and visitors of Carmel to develop a list of priorities for what people are needing from the next mayor, and incorporated these ideas into her comprehensive plan. Her plan is called Elevate Carmel. This vision plan provides strategic ideas and next steps that involve public safety, community engagement, fiscal discipline, strong neighborhoods, schools and more.
TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2023 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 13
LET’S WALK THROUGH SOME OF THE ELEVATE CARMEL PLAN: WORLD-CLASS PUBLIC SAFETY
INSPIRED QUALITY OF LIFE
“We absolutely have to make safety a top priority,” Finkam says. “Our crime statistics are low but they have increased, and the statistics don’t matter if you’ve been a victim of a crime. You just want to be safe.”
Another priority of Finkam’s Elevate Carmel vision plan is continuing to develop the high quality of life in Carmel.
Action items for Finkam’s plan are to establish a Mayor’s Advisory Council on Public Safety, which will involve members from all aspects of city government. Public safety members will receive top-class training and accessibility to exceptional equipment. She also has a plan to increase the number of mental health resource officers in the community. Finkam and her public safety plans have received endorsements from the Carmel FOP Lodge 185 and the Carmel Professional Firefighters Local 4444.
FISCAL EXCELLENCE Finkam will prioritize fiscal discipline by budgeting responsibly and preparing Carmel for the future. She plans to achieve this by completing a comprehensive financial audit of all city-related entities, committing to a fiscal plan that will improve Carmel’s financial position, and understanding all expenses.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Through community engagement, Finkam will leverage the community’s voice and use data to create the city’s first community-endorsed strategic plan. There will also be opportunities for residents to participate in city activities, including newly formed committees that will focus around transportation, arts, financial investments and more. Finkam will also engage students in her efforts through the Mayor’s Youth Council.
“I love how [Carmel community members] are all united around contributing to making our community great, and giving our kids and families a better future,” she says. Finkam’s plan aims to ensure the quality of life in Carmel remains among the best in the country, and continually attracts talent, visitors and growth. The plan includes implementation of more trails and multi-use paths, continued investments in amenities, and working with local businesses on providing sponsorship and philanthropic support of arts programming. CITY SYMBIOSIS CARMEL FORMALIZES SISTER-CITY PARTNERSHIP WITH JELGAVA, LATVIA Writer / Jeff Worrell Photography Provided
Carmel recently became a home away from home for a visiting delegation from our newest sister city, Jelgava, Latvia. The mayor of Jelgava, along with other elected officials and government leaders from the central part of Latvia, spent an amazing 10 days exchanging ideas and learning as much as they could about governing a modern, central-Indiana community.
there he met the Latvian ambassador to the United States, who asked him to take on the role of honorary consul to Indianapolis. He said yes, and was on his way to making connections with government and business leaders, while assisting people from Latvia who were integrating into Indiana life. Mayor Brainard happened to be one of the government leaders Berzins reached out to, not realizing that someday Carmel would become the center of Latvian attention.
After Berzins was elevated by Governor The man who brought Carmel and Jelgava Holcomb to the position of honorary consul together is Carmel resident Andris Berzins. for Indiana, he began discussing a more Since 1987 Berzins has called Carmel home, formal relationship between Jelgava and but his family has deep roots in Latvia, Carmel. In June of 2022, exchanges began. The Carmel Fire Department Auxiliary coordinated the shipment of hospital medial supplies and scrubs to Jelgava for use in Ukraine. In 2022 the Gazebo was the site for a Latvian-themed Christmas tree display along with the other Carmel sister cities. The Jelgava and Carmel libraries have exchanged numerous books and cultural gifts. In 2023 the exchanges ramped up, with Jelgava Police Chief Viktor Vanags and Carmel Police Chief James Barlow each sending two officers for two weeks of immersive training. Artists from Jelgava attended the Carmel International Arts Festival with the most recent exchange, with Jelgava government and city leaders staying in Carmel. This month the American Latvian Association Congress held their annual conference in Carmel to honor the newly found, blooming relationship.

Berzins now helps to coordinate the Carmel sister program, helping the five sister-city organizations with growing their interactions. Berzins says there are more sister-city relationships in the works. “Carmel is beginning to be viewed around the world as a multicultural community with an appeal to the international community,” Berzins says. “There are so many ethnic groups who live here, contribute to our community and send their children to our schools. It makes sense to celebrate that richness.” And so we do.

CARING BEYOND COMMUNITY WALLS hen CarDon & Associates highlights its “communities,” the organization is not only calling attention to its senior living campuses but to their surrounding towns and global sense of fellowship as well. CarDon cares for communities beyond its own — from neighborhoods just across the street all the way down to exotic locales like Guatemala. Paoli Health & Living, CarDon’s community in Paoli, Indiana, just recently added a service to its meal delivery program for a nearby senior housing complex. Now, in addition to delivering meals every Wednesday, CarDon staffers are hosting monthly cookouts in the complex’s courtyard. “What started out as a program to meet the nutritional needs of this vulnerable group turned into so much more,” said Paoli’s Clinical Liaison Sandra Hatton. “Seniors are greeted with a smile, a hot meal and a care check to make sure they are doing okay. They started out as our neighbors and are now part of our family.” CarDon’s family serves people on the other side of the age spectrum as well. Solarbron, CarDon’s Evansville community, serves as a sponsor of the Tri-State BackPack Hero program in an effort to provide nutritious meals to local students throughout the school year. The program gives free bagged meals to students K-12 on the Friday of each school week to feed them over the weekend. They also receive these food bags through holidays and summer break. “Healthy aging starts when we’re young, so this partnership gives us an opportunity to invest in our youth in a tangible way,” said Solarbron’s Director of Residential Marketing Ashley Mayo. “A full belly makes for a focused student, which leads to a better education experience and healthier life choices. So, by the time they’re walking through our senior living doors, they’ve lived a long and healthy life and are ready to enjoy all they’ve worked toward. It’s a simple effort but a vital part of a healthy community.”
2023 marks the third year Solarbron has hosted the “Lemonade Stand fundraiser” to support the efforts of the Isaiah 117 House, which provides loving homes and everyday needs for children across the country as they await foster care placement. A Solarbron resident’s great-grandson informed the community about this cause when he was just seven years old. “He designs the flyers for our site each year and gives a presentation to our residents,” Mayo said. “This fundraiser is a great opportunity to unite the generations and raise money for a worthy cause. The slogan is ‘Love, you’re not alone.’ The mission is to let each child who stays at Isaiah 117 House know they’re loved and not alone in what can be a difficult situation. Love transcends generations, making this a universally appealing event for our residents, staff and community.” Love transcends borders as well, as evidenced by a CarDon team member’s recent efforts in Guatemala. On a Friday that would have normally found CarDon Chief Growth Officer Kendra Fauth-Edwards delivering meals for Hamilton County Meals on Wheels, she and her family were delivering meals to seniors in Guatemala. They joined the philanthropic traveling group The Village Experience in this effort. “If you know me well, you know how passionate I am about serving seniors,” Fauth-Edwards said. “I love what I do, so this opportunity was extra special.” THE LANGUAGE BARRIER WAS VERY REAL, BUT LOVE IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.” At the end of the day, whether it’s serving senior living residents across Indiana, helping children around the nation or caring for people outside the U.S., CarDon is simply about “family caring for family.”

rime 47, an upscale restaurant in Carmel’s Clay Terrace, has seamlessly blended fine dining with philanthropy, creating a dining experience that leaves a lasting impact.
Beyond its exceptional dining experiences, Prime 47 has etched its name in the community for its philanthropic endeavors. Over the past decade, Founder and Chief Marketing Officer Nessa Hamman has partnered with various charities, raising close to $2 million for causes close to her heart. “Nessa’s passion is to leave every person and organization she touches better than she found it,” says Co-Founder Jeremiah Hamman. “Whether it’s a warm and genuine smile, a helping hand, words of encouragement, or planning and executing a $250,000 fundraising event, Nessa is all in on making that person or organization’s day brighter.” By channeling proceeds through events, the restaurant has managed to make a significant impact on charities such as Food For the Poor, Dinner on Union in Westfield and, most recently, the Eric Medlen Foundation, just to name a few. When asked about the motivation to contribute to charities, Nessa says she and her husband, Jeremiah, are grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the community.

2020, after defying the odds by testing negative for the BRCA gene mutation. People who test positive for a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation have a higher-thanaverage risk of developing breast cancer. “I was tested in 2012 and didn't have the BRCA gene,” Unser says. “My twin sister thought we were safe because I was negative for the gene until she did a self-exam
and found a lump. She was immediately diagnosed with breast cancer and found out later that she also didn't have the gene.” Both sisters witnessed their own mother's battle with breast cancer, which ultimately claimed her life in 2004. The event dedicated 20% of its sales to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a renowned breast cancer advocacy organization.

“The boutiques Lily & Sparrow and Uplift are true influencers for breast cancer awareness,” Childers says. “Their willingness to make a donation makes our events possible.” At the heart of this event was a paper wall that the sisters tagged as the “what we wish we knew" wall. “There are so many things I wish me and Liz had known that no one talks about,” Unser says. “I didn't know what I would go through after choosing to get breast implants after my mastectomy, or what the recovery after the mastectomy would really look like.” The wall gave a platform for the twins to share what they wish they had known before their own breast cancer diagnoses, highlighting the importance of knowledge and aiming to guide and support those who, like them, have faced the unexpected reality of breast cancer.

The Twins for Tatas fundraiser has since evolved into an annual event. The most recent event was held this fall, focusing on the decision women face to get breast implants after a mastectomy. “I ended up having nine surgeries due to infections and my sister had seven,” Unser says. “I started wondering why no one

decision for implants,” she says. “Women need to be told what they are actually going to go through and experience.” By sharing their own experiences, Norma and Liz recently paired up with Lissa Sears, founder of Flat Out Love, an organization that encourages women to love themselves without implants. “The mission for Twins for Tatas is, after women have been diagnosed, to educate them on what actually happens after a double mastectomy and what it means to get implants,” Unser says. “I want to do something good with this newfound platform.” Twins for Tatas serves as a reminder that the fight against breast cancer goes beyond the diagnosis. It encompasses a journey of hope, resilience, and the invaluable lessons learned by survivors. Norma and Liz have several more events planned in the future, to continue their mission of supporting and educating women. The twins are both cancer free.

The goal of Crimson Wholistic Fitness is to improve mental health through fitness training. Owner Tambryn Crimson-Dahn found a need within the mental health industry and created the concept after gaining certifications in personal training, fitness coaching and nutrition. Also certified as a drug and alcohol recovery specialist, Crimson-Dahn knows firsthand how improved fitness, nutrition and mindfulness techniques can change lives. “In 2016 I weighed 216 pounds and wore a 3X in shirts,” Crimson-Dahn says. "I never wanted to exercise. It was not on my radar,
CRIMSON WHOLISTIC FITNESS and I was addicted to cigarettes and anxiety pills. I came from a broken home with a toxic environment and knew many people dealing with the same thing. At that time I was sexually assaulted, and a switch flipped. I started going to the gym to fix myself and salvage what health I had left. I vowed I would never be a victim again. I figured out what worked as I went, and today I wear a size extra small.” After experiencing her own transformation, Crimson-Dahn felt a calling to help others achieve overall mental health through exercise. Besides her work at Crimson Wholistic Fitness, she is also a contributing writer for the Medical Fitness Network. Her fitness and wellness programs offer clients several options. At no charge, Crimson-Dahn provides Tambryn’s Tip Seminar, which provides attendees with guidance on nutrition, anxiety management and relationship coping skills. A one-on-one Zoom consultation session to explore goals is also free. There are a variety of packages
and price points for bundles of 55-minute sessions, which include a free assessment. Both small-group and individual relaxation sessions, which include meditation coaching and yoga, are offered. “This is a safe space,” she says. “I’m a good listener and whatever anyone says to me in a one-on-one session stays here. People coming out of treatment centers need something else besides just therapy, and often they find they are addicted to their anxiety medication. Food addiction is something that is never talked about, but the ‘why’ behind it needs to be charted. I love being a part of helping people figure it out. I did it myself with no one to turn to, but people don’t have to do it alone. There is somewhere they can go. They have a choice to become all they can be.” Call or text 317-699-8311 for more info, and visit Crimson Wholistic Fitness on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
