Build Your Core With Barre

Writer / Jennifer Magley

If you were inspired watching Simone Biles win four gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro or gasped in amazement seeing American Ballet Theatre’s Misty Copeland soar through the air in her iconic Under Armour commercial, then a barre class just might be for you.

The Anna Newcomb method of barre strengthens the neutral spine and perfect posture by challenging the core and other major muscle groups such as shoulder, arm, abdominal, back, seat and leg muscles. The method includes isotonic and isometric movements, focusing on fatiguing muscles and then toning them.

In fact, Anna Newcomb, owner of Studio RE in Carmel, shares that barre is for everyone. “Our non-impact, non-intimidating classes allow for all ages and genders to participate and excel. Motivation for taking the class ranges from wanting to lose weight, getting your body bathing suit-ready, recovering an injury or adding core strength and flexibility to your workout.” So what is barre exactly, and what should you expect? A ballet barre is used during class for support and to assist in correcting posture and alignment while achieving the components of class. These components include elements of dance, Pilates, yoga and resistance training all built around the common core, the same movements implored by Biles and Copeland. Additional challenges in the classes include light hand weights and balls. atCarmel.com / NOVEMBER 2016 / CARMEL MAGAZINE / 11

P

The 45-minute class fundamentally begins with the core 360, targeting all areas of the abdominals and correcting and strengthening back muscles and spinal posture. “Correct positioning leads to tightly constricted movements and to exemplary and rapid results,” says Newcomb. “The upbeat and oftenchanging exercises and stretches create momentum in the class.” Newcomb, a Butler University alum, left Corporate America after discovering her passion for barre while on the mend from a back injury “At first, I couldn’t do all the exercises to full potential. I simply wasn’t strong enough. But I was serious about helping myself,” she says “In just a few months of doing barre, my core was so strong that I had not one back issue the entire training for a marathon, and my first day, I ran three miles without despair.” Studio RE celebrated their first year of business, and Newcomb is most proud of the culture of approachability that they have created. “It is likely you will have people in your class ranging from ages 25-60+. The class has many modifications to accompany where you are in your core strength. We have the best clients that are motivating others in class and keep it so fun and lively.”

behind the scenes and in front of the crowds at all of the Indy Fuel games. He first started working at the Indiana State Fairgrounds when he was 14 years old. "I've spent an awful lot of time here and have met a lot of wonderful people over the years," Farmer said as he prepared to start up the Zamboni. "I come here and work part-time at the Fuel games and in the Youth arena. The crowds are always easy to deal with, and I like being a part of the fun staff that goes on here.” Farmer stressed that the biggest thing for him to remember is to just drive slow and turn right. “That's a big one,” Farmer said. “I'm really glad I don't drive this at the horse shows. That might get a little messy."

"I'm always having the best time of my life at these games," Allan said during a break from meeting the crowd before a recent game. "I'm blessed to be with this team, and I'm really enjoying this third season. We have the greatest fan base, and I love talking with them. There is a real party atmosphere before and during the games. There are a lot of interactive things going on such as the face painting, bidding for jerseys and hitting a tennis ball into a goal. It's a lot of fun." Allan, who is also the emcee for The Indianapolis Indians, said staying busy works for him. "It doesn't leave me with a lot of time to get into trouble," he laughed as he gave a fan a high five. "I enjoy talking to them and getting everyone excited about the games, the entertainment and everything we have to offer."

NITRO IGNITES THE CROWD

I'm excited from the time the doors open until they close."

No one gets Fuel fans riled up the way Nitro, the team mascot, does. He knows how to mingle and get everyone fired up about the games.

Nitro says he doesn't have any trouble getting around the ice rink or the coliseum.

"The best part of being Nitro is being a part of the game itself," Nitro said in a recent interview. "I love the noise, the crowds, the music, the team and the whole experience.

"I just use my eyes and look for fans," he laughed. "I am pleased that everyone is happy to see me. Kids are always excited to see me and want to chase after me. That's

great because I'm like a big kid myself." Nitro likes to keep his true identity as secret as he can. He says he's like a super hero. He wants to keep people guessing. He's usually good at getting around, but he does have a mishap now and then. "I fell down behind the Zamboni machine one night, hit the wall and fell down. I had a hard time getting back up, and the audience roared with laughter. They loved it. I grabbed on to the back of the Zamboni and was dragged across the ice. They laughed even more." Nitro, who graduated from the University of Arkansas, said he hasn't seen the Netflix comedy "Mascots" yet, but he says many of his mascot buddies appear in it. "I would really love to see it," he stated. "I've heard it's very funny. I hope it shows how much fun it is to be a mascot."

PILOTING FROM WAY UP HIGH

Spencer Stevens has a bird's eye view of all the Fuel game intermissions from his post in the rafters. He watches from a lofty position as he pilots a 16-foot blimp with his remote control. "The crowd loves it, and I enjoy looking for a fan who is not paying attention, so I can land the blimp near his or her head," Stevens said. "I also fill the blimp with prizes and drop free tickets, Chickfil-A gift cards and Community Health Network information. I also chase after Nitro and hit him in the back of the head with the blimp." Stevens works at Hobby Shop RC (Radio Control), 1102 S. Franklin Rd., Suite A, Indianapolis. He pilots the blimp with his dad, Marty, and John Gaither, who also pilots a blimp at the Indianapolis Colts games.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY CREATES STEM INSPIRED HIGH SCHOOL IN INDIANAPOLIS Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

On October 3, 2016, Purdue University announced the launch of a unique partnership between Indianapolis Public Schools and the city of Indianapolis that will result in a STEM focused charter school. Purdue Polytechnic High School which will be an IPS Innovation Network School, will open in the Fall of 2017. Purdue President Mitch Daniels said, “We thank IPS and the city for the partnership, which we hope will build a new pathway to Purdue and to successful careers for future students from downtown Indianapolis. Students enrolled in the school, which will be located in the former PR Mallory building at 3029 E. Washington Street but during renovation of that location, the inaugural class will have temporary residence nearby at 201 S. Rural Street.” Mayor Joe Hogsett is thrilled for the partnership and investment Purdue is making in the community. “When the doors to the

school open in a little more than a year, we will be doing more than merely putting Indianapolis kids in a high quality educational environment, we will be heling the Young mean and women from Englewood and other Eastside neighborhoods reach their full potential, prepared for today’s fast-moving economy.” IPS Superintendent, Lewis Ferebee is thrilled with the partnership and shared that, “it is certain to have a profound impact on IPS students, our educators and our community.” He further added, “With the expertise of Purdue’s faculty and research, we have the opportunity to inspire students and unlock their limitless potential.” The school has been in the development stage for over a year. The high school curriculum will mirror the Purdue Polytechnic Institute on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus and will serve as a pipeline to the college. Applications are available through the high schools website at https://pphsi.purdue.eud/(Https://pphsi.purdue.edu/) and are being accepted from October 3, 2016 through February 3, 2017. Students who live within IPS boundaries will have first preference for spaces.

Carmel's Cornerstone Lutheran Church

EXPANDING TO FISHERS Hinge Building (719 Virginia Ave.)

Writer / Janet Streibel

C

ornerstone Lutheran Church (formerly Carmel Lutheran Church) announces its new name as it continues to grow with two new locations including downtown Indianapolis and Fishers. Although Cornerstone Lutheran Church (CLC) has a new name, encompassing three settings, it shares one common congregation.

“God has blessed us with a new Fishers site built on 18 acres,” says Pastor Luther as he approaches his 24th year at the Carmel location. “This gives us influence to expand the Gospel in a new community. Our leadership has carefully planned to replicate much of the same culture and experiences at the Carmel site to each future location of our church.”

“We remain true to our mission as we reach out, care for and build people toward maturity in Christ as one congregation in several communities,” says Luther Brunette, senior pastor.

Cornerstone Lutheran’s reputation for engaging families in worship should come as no surprise since Pastor Luther is committed to family and faith. He and his wife of 39 years have three children and two grandchildren. Further, Luther, the oldest of seven sons, knew he wanted to be a pastor when he was just 2 years old. His father was a Lutheran pastor as well.

One unique feature of CLC is the luxury of having a real live pastor at each service for each location as opposed to a video on stage as seen with many growing churches. The Carmel site was established in 1976 and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Located at 4850 E. Main St., Carmel represents the original hub. The downtown Indy location has been around for a year and holds Sunday evening services at 5 p.m. in the

The new CLC Fishers site is located at 13450 E. 116th St. (behind Kroger Plaza off Olio Rd.) and is scheduled to open November 20 with a traditional service (organ-led worship) at 9 a.m., followed by education time for all ages at 10:15 a.m. and a contemporary

worship service (with praise band) at 11 a.m. “We believe in family worship, and our services encourage children to come sit in the front by the altar, so that the liturgical theme can be explained on their level,” says Pastor Luther. The Fishers location will provide the following highlights: • a large area with plenty of parking • a social gathering area for coffee and donuts • a significant indoor playground offering a safe clean environment • a special Christmas drive-thru nativity scene in December If you’re thinking of worshipping at the new Fishers CLC, then come to the Carmel site this month for Saturday evening worship, dinner and education time (beginning at 4:45 p.m.) where you’ll have the opportunity to meet others who will also transition in November. Pastor Luther says, “I’ve experienced lots of change and growth, and it’s been a real blessing. I welcome you to visit any of the three locations of CLC that fit your schedule and are convenient for your family’s lifestyle.” Visit cornerstonelutheran.church for more information or call 317-814-4252.

Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for atGeist.com for more than seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

Michelle Marocco Creating the

Unexpected In Carmel Writer / Lisa Mitchell Photos provided

Unexpected. That’s the word that first comes to mind when entering the Marocco Jewelry & Fine Art showroom in Carmel. Their designs let people know they are in for a truly unique encounter – from diamonds on exotic leather and hand-cast bronze and silver elements artfully paired with rare gems to one-of-a-kind pieces that have been infused with the artist’s energy through the act of hand-creating each piece. All are beautiful pieces of art, or as Michelle Marocco, the artist who gave life to the pieces, may say, they are “pieces of her spirit that have manifested on canvas.” Each work has its own energy, a story played out by paint, wax and other mediums finding their way to create a visual experience that she shares her soul through. Her style is as varied as her artistic interests. Pieces range from Tuscan landscapes to abstract works and every other style in between that feels right to her at the time. She’s not limited to or focused on one particular style of painting, and that makes for a beautiful and diverse body of work. Michelle describes her painting process as a conversation between herself and the canvas. She says, “First, I tell the painting what I want it to do, and then the conversation begins with the painting guiding and directing me into what it wants to do and ultimately become.” It’s a

push and pull, a tension, and it seldom ends up leading where she thinks it will. Marocco has been painting professionally for over 20 years with her passion for jewelry design emerging as another creative outlet eight years ago when she launched her business. It was a natural progression to include jewelry design as part of her artistic process. Marocco says, “I see designing jewelry as simply working with another type of canvas.” This explains the truly unique style of her pieces, many being one-of-a-kind creations that offer her clients something completely different than they can find anywhere else. She goes on to say, “I’m inspired by nature, different textures, conversations … inspiration can really come from anything, but the result is a new collection every time I sit down to create. The designs are constantly evolving, and that’s what keeps it exciting to me.”

Collectors and retail partners from around the world are always eagerly awaiting the reveal of her next design. Marocco can often be found in Aspen, Telluride, Los Angeles and New York, showing her latest custom creations and connecting with clients on a truly personal level. The personal relationship she has with her clients feeds her soul. She understands that for many of her clients, it’s not just about buying another piece of jewelry or a painting; it’s about celebrating a milestone, finding the perfect gift for a loved one or investing in a piece that will be a cherished addition to their collection.
