over what was formerly JFIT training studio and created Stockton Training Grounds. Every day Stockton is able to work towards his goal of transforming his members into the best people they can be. “There has been significant growth in our community over the last year,” explains Stockton. “We have also seen more positivity throughout our gym in the last year. Members are getting to their goals

faster and sustaining those goals longer.” Stockton trains about 20 to 30 clients himself, and he has three additional trainers who have clients as well. He starts his process with a one-on-one conversation with new clients. He evaluates their goals and what they hope to get out of their program. He then explains their options for workout plans and assigns them with one of his trainers. Workouts include personal

fitness training, boot camp classes, fitness competitions and more. All clients start at a baseline workout. This allows the trainer to see what their client is capable of and what the goal is, in order to develop a specific workout based on those results. The staff knows that not all bodies are the same, and Stockton explains that the gym focuses on applying workouts that are designed and intentional for the individual, not just a general workout.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT HAZEL DELL ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Dr. Emily Cornwell

Furthermore, the hospital now boasts an upgraded dental space with all the newest technology and equipment for dental and surgical procedures. Writer / Natalie Gargiulo Photography Provided

The team at Hazel Dell Animal Hospital, a long-standing pillar of care for pets in Carmel, welcomes its newest addition, Dr. Emily Cornwell. A Carmel native, Cornwell brings a wealth of expertise and a passion for animal welfare to the practice. Cornwell studied animal science at Colorado State University before earning her doctorate in veterinary medicine. “I always knew as a young kid I wanted to be a veterinarian,” Cornwell says. “I just moved back to Indiana in May and I’ve been a veterinarian for a little over six months. I was looking for a place that had experienced vets but also had experience in teaching new graduates.” In tandem with the arrival of Cornwell, the hospital has undergone a transformation, both in appearance and services offered. The recent renovations have not only given the facility a fresh, modern look, but have also expanded its capacity to better serve

the community’s beloved animals. The increased space allows for more animals to receive top-notch veterinary care, reinforcing the hospital’s role as a trusted partner in the health and happiness of Carmel’s pets. “We basically doubled the size of our building,” Cornwell says. “We took over what was previously part of Subway and added new surgical and dental suites, more exam rooms, offices and an expanded treatment area, in an effort to get as many people in as quickly as possible.” Among the enhancements is the addition of a state-of-the-art surgical center. This cutting-edge facility is equipped with the latest advancements in veterinary surgical technology, ensuring that pets receive the highest standard of care during procedures. “The veterinarians here at Hazel Dell have the passion and excitement to learn the up-and-coming innovations in pet care,” Cornwell says. “A new medication for arthritis in dogs was just approved and the hospital jumped on it right away. We’ve also started talking about using AI for medical records. Everyone here is very adaptable.”

For those who have long relied on Hazel Dell Animal Hospital, these changes mark an exciting new chapter in the facility. Cornwell’s presence and the enhanced facilities highlight the hospital’s dedication to evolving alongside the ever-changing landscape of veterinary medicine. Whether it’s routine check-ups, advanced surgeries or specialized dental care, Hazel Dell Animal Hospital remains at the forefront of compassionate and comprehensive pet health care in Carmel. The team looks forward to continuing its mission of providing exceptional veterinary services with the addition of Cornwell and the revitalized hospital space. “I’m excited to be back in Carmel and excited to be part of the Hazel Dell team,” Cornwell says.

Each nominee including Karras will receive up to a $55,000 donation. The winner will be granted a $250,000 donation to the charity of their choice.

Fans can cast their votes on social media platforms using #WPMOYChallenge along with the nominee’s name, or by voting directly at nfl.com/honors/man-of-the-year. More than anything, Ted spends time with the people we support and that means so much to everyone.” To watch the nomination video “It takes a Village,” visit the Cincinnati Bengals Youtube channel. SENSE OF CIVILITY

UPCOMING EVENT AT CARMEL CLAY PUBLIC LIBRARY TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING CIVIL Writer / Jeff Worrell Photography Provided

As I reflect on the recent election and current state of our republic, clearly, respect for government is at an all-time low. As a person who asked the people of Carmel to vote for me instead of my opponent, I find myself wondering, can we do better? Is it possible to shift the attitude in Carmel towards a greater respect for all? Could Carmel not just be known for roundabouts, but just as famous for a community that values, promotes and practices a greater sense of civility? Can we join hands and make a change? The first step towards reaching that distinction will take place at 6 p.m. on January 10 at the Carmel Clay Public Library. It is there that we will gather and turn the microphone over to Alexandra Hudson, author of the bestselling book, “The Soul of Civility.” She is eager to share her wisdom, and provide the tools necessary to make corrections and implement a cultural shift. But what is civility? Many people, myself included, get civility confused with being polite. Civility is not just about being nice to people. Hudson advocates for her view that we can disagree and carry out brutally honest conversations with people we perhaps don’t even like. But while doing so, we must see every person as our moral equal and worthy of respect, with our conduct motivated by seeing others as beings, endowed with dignity and inherently valuable. Not to make this too simple, but if we respect and appreciate those with whom we disagree, the urge to harm, punish, win or embarrass disappears. Instead, I can more easily seek common ground and understanding. 16 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

Influenced by curiosity, I can participate in a constructive debate, to learn and become enlightened without exhibiting anger. I am going to ask Carmel to rediscover a general regard for our fellow citizens. “Civility demands that we revive the basic respect we are all owed and that we owe to one another as members of the human community,” Hudson preaches. And I fully agree. I firmly believe our children and grandchildren watch us closely. I hope they will witness our sincere efforts to change the way we treat one another, not just locally and regionally, but perhaps even nationally. I hope you will take this first step with me, and together we can reinvigorate a community where civility becomes the norm and sets an example for others to follow. To register for January 10, please go to carmelclaylibrary.org/event/9772501.

TRANSFORMATION GET TO KNOW HAMILTON COUNTY COMMISSIONER MARK HEIRBRANDT Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Justin Sicking

When Mark E. Heirbrandt was elected as Hamilton County Commissioner in February 2013, it was baptism by fire – via water. When he took office, 30% of Sheridan was flooded, so he spent his first week meeting with citizens with water-filled basements, trying to rectify the problem. There were, and always are, a host of issues to address as county commissioner. “Most people don’t realize what this job entails,” Heirbrandt says. “I’m the executive of the county.” This means he’s responsible for the government center, which houses judges, prosecutors, clerks, and surveyors. He’s also in charge of the courthouse, fairgrounds, jail, probation, community corrections,

coroner, and all countywide parks. Plus, Hamilton County owns Riverview Health, which means the commissioner’s office appoints the entire board. In addition, they are responsible for the sheriff ’s office and therefore collaborate with police forces to ensure community safety. And did you know that half of what they do is drainage? “That’s important because every project that gets built, you have to understand where the water’s going,” Heirbrandt says. During his first three months on the job, Heirbrandt seriously considered quitting. After six months, however, people started thanking him for listening to their needs and positively impacting their lives.

Over the past 10 years he’s been involved in numerous transformation projects in Hamilton County. For instance, there’s the State Road 37 Improvement Project as well as the historic Bell Ford Covered Bridge, which is currently being brought to Hamilton County. Built in the 1800s, this post-truss covered bridge is the only one left in the world. Obtaining it was quite a feat. When Heirbrandt first called one of the commissioners in Jackson County to express interest in the bridge, Heirbrandt was told, “You and everyone else want it.” A local historian encouraged the Jackson County commissioner to give it to Heirbrandt because, the historian said, the bridge would be constructed properly.

TownePost.com | January 2024 | 19

“WHEN YOU HAVE MORE CONSTITUENTS MOVING INTO THE COUNTY, YOU NEED MORE RESOURCES TO SERVE THOSE PEOPLE ADEQUATELY.” — MARK HEIRBRANDT

With the population growth, he also wants to add more judges to the government center. “When you have more constituents moving into the county, you need more resources to serve those people adequately,” he says.

At a lunch meeting between Heirbrandt, the Jackson County commissioner and Al Patterson, Hamilton County parks director, a deal was made. After receiving close to $3 million in federal funds, construction commenced. The bridge is expected to be completed next year.

“Our main goal was to protect businesses along that corridor, and to provide safer transportation for our constituents,” Heirbrandt says.

Heirbrandt worked on the State Road 37 project with Mayor Scott Fadness. Back in 2015, State Road 37 saw a lot of accidents. Since it is a state road, the pair met with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to ask them to make it safer. Initially, INDOT leaders told them they had no money, but Heirbrandt and Fadness kept pushing. Finally, INDOT officials said they could invest $100 million to put in J-turns (referred to as Michigan lefts) along the corridor. Many constituents detested J-turns, so Heirbrandt and Fadness left the meeting disheartened.

“The large transformational projects we do take a long time, but what we do well with the explosive growth we deal with is that we plan ahead to get these projects in the queue,” Heirbrandt says.

The good news, however, was that they knew INDOT had $100 million to invest in the project, so they leveraged that money and inserted their own portion to create full-blown interchanges that enabled traffic to flow easily. 20 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

Now it takes only 10 minutes to get down to Interstate 69.

As for future aspirations, Heirbrandt is working on opening a women’s domestic shelter in Hamilton County. He’s also in the process of a U.S. Highway 31 corridor transformational and economic development project for northern Hamilton County. “That’s taking shape now,” he says. “We’re putting water and sewer in Bakers Corner. The reason there hasn’t been development up there is because there’s been no water and sewer. They’ve been on septic systems and wells.”

Heirbrandt says he feels like God put him in this position for a reason. He says he gets signs from time to time telling him so. For instance, in 2019 a man showed up in his office to tell him that 28 years earlier, the chance encounter they shared hugely impacted his life. In 1991 Heirbrandt found this man sobbing in the lobby of Riley Hospital for Children and asked if he was OK. The man shared that his son had just died. Heirbrandt had offered to pray with him and the man declined because in that moment, he was furious with God for taking away his child. Heirbrandt encouraged him to pray at some point when he felt up to it. “I saw you on TV last night, and I drove all the way from Martinsville to tell you that I took your advice 28 years ago and prayed every day,” the man said after showing up at Heirbrandt’s office in 2019. “Three years later my wife got pregnant with twins. When they were born, you were the first person I thought of. I thought of you again when they graduated from high school and college and when I walked my daughter down the aisle last month. I just wanted you to know what an impact you made on my life.” As for his tenure as Hamilton County Commissioner, Heirbrandt maintains that when he first started in the position, he crawled. Over time, he learned to walk, then jog. Now he’s in full sprint mode.

GREY MATTERS OF CARMEL SPECIALIZES IN NEUROFEEDBACK TO ADDRESS A RANGE OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Writer / Alli Donovan Photographer / Sarah Browning

Grey Matters is a neurofeedback clinic that helps and supports both children and adults, to mitigate symptoms related to various neurological and mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), apraxia, migraines and more.

These sensors are only reading electrical signals produced by the brain and transmitting them to a computer. Whether clients are asked to watch images, read or simply close their eyes, the staff at Grey Matters is tracking brainwaves and developing training protocols with their specialized brain-mapping software.

But what is neurofeedback?

During neurofeedback, patients can actually hear the sounds of the brainwave patterns in real time as the brain responds to sounds.

Neurofeedback is a powerful technology that trains the brain on what to do and uses its own reward system, thereby teaching and practicing optimal performance for long-term or permanent change. This technique teaches you how to identify counterproductive brain activity patterns, so you can consciously disrupt and replace them with healthier, more balanced brain activity patterns. Neurofeedback ultimately helps you and your brain self-regulate more efficiently and effectively in virtually any situation. What does a session at Grey Matters look like? Good news - it’s really simple. While complex brainwave activity is happening inside the head, patients are able to sit comfortably in a chair and let the sensors placed on the scalp do all the work. 22 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

When the brain produces favorable brainwave patterns, patients will hear special musical tones. When their brain is not as harmonious, the sounds distort. This instantaneous feedback notifies each patient’s brain what it needs to do to make the music more harmonious. With each session, the brain is able to practice efficiency, coordination and balance. After each session, patients are able to noticeably improve the control over their thoughts and actions.

“At age 2 Grey was diagnosed with apraxia, so from age 2 to 5 we were in speech therapy and we weren’t really making any progress,” Reimmuth says. “Within the first couple of weeks of neurofeedback, Greyson was making eye contact - something we had never gotten before,” she says. “Words were starting to come out - granted, they were choppy and missing some syllables - but he was making sense.” Grey had 30 to 35 sessions at that clinic before Reimmuth was presented with the opportunity to open her own clinic in Carmel. “That same exact clinic encouraged me to open my own clinic in 2020, so with their help and encouragement, I opened Grey Matters in January of 2021,” she says.

Brian Martin was a police officer at both the Warsaw and Carmel police departments for 16 years. Through his police service he experienced many traumatic events. After seeing disturbing scenes, he had learned to block out his emotions.

“Devin and Courtney told me to trust the process,” he says. “I kept going and I started to feel so much better.”

“You have nothing to lose,” he says. “My communication is better and my sleep is better. It’s worth it.”

Martin had only built up a tolerance for so much. His body struggled to handle the stress, and he began to have bad anxiety and PTSDrelated symptoms throughout the rest of his tenure. In 2018 Martin was at home and saw a news story on TV about a car crash on the west side of Carmel. This brought Martin to a dark place and he was on the verge of taking his own life. He saved himself, and he quickly enrolled himself in a 30-day treatment facility to get help.

HEALTHY HABITS TO CREATE A NEW YOU FOR 2024 Story Provided by CarePatrol Photography Provided

A new year full of wonder is on the horizon. Instead of thinking of typical resolutions, this could be an exciting time to bring some joy, inspiration and healthy choices to change your life. This is a fantastic opportunity to incorporate some new possibilities, and team up to help a parent, grandparent or other loved one to make 2024 a wonderful year to remember! Strategizing on ways to fill the new year with happiness can be empowering and a lot of fun, especially during the holiday season, which can be a challenging time emotionally for older adults. Let’s explore some tips to create an amazing year for you and your loved ones.

TRY A NEW ACTIVITY TO INCREASE WELLNESS EACH MONTH. Finding the right healthy activities can add happiness to your life, as well as build resilience - the ability to bounce back and recover from difficult situations. Give yoga or tai chi a whirl, to connect you to your body. Meditation can promote a sense of calm and peace. Love to dance? Take your first Zumba class! Start a walking club with friends or neighbors, and commit to a 30-minute walk three mornings a week.

JOURNAL TO HELP YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.

INVEST 60 MINUTES A DAY TO COMPLETE A MAJOR GOAL.

You don’t need a fancy book to write down your thoughts. A notebook will do just fine. Taking the time to express and understand your emotions proactively can help keep depression at bay. It doesn’t need to be a formal process. Just jot down whatever comes to mind. By doing it at the same time each day, you’ll be able to create a healthy habit.

If you’ve always dreamed of learning to play a musical instrument, bake French specialties or write the novel that has been kicking around in your head for ages, now is the time to make it a reality. Wake up early to devote an hour each day to expand your skill set in a chosen area. By the end of 2024, you’ll have devoted 365 hours to this endeavor! Think of the progress and joy that will accompany your journey.

TREAT YOUR TASTEBUDS. Expand your horizons and delight your palate by experiencing new food items weekly. Whether you and your loved ones enjoy a wide variety of foods or are picky eaters, it is exciting to experience new options, and you may just find a new favorite. By opening up your choices, you’ll shake up your regular routine. Start out with vegetables and fruits that you’ve always been curious to try.

Let’s celebrate the small victories and major accomplishments this year, as well as gather our family members, especially older adults, to experience the journey together. Wonderful experiences are even better shared with those who mean the most to us!

ICE OR HEAT

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PAIN RELIEF Writer / Dr. Patrick Siparsky, Orthopedic Surgeon, IU Health Methodist Medical Plaza North

Whether you face an injury to your bone or muscle or even arthritis in your joints, orthopedic experts are ready to help. However, slight to moderate pain does not always require a trip to see your doctor. In certain situations, an ice pack or heating pad can help you feel better more quickly. But it is important to know which to use in which situation to prevent further pain or even injury.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE COLD THERAPY?

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE HEAT THERAPY?

Cold therapy, such as a cold compress, should typically be used for recent injuries that have occurred within the last 48 hours and in which swelling is a problem. Apply the ice pack or even a bag of frozen food from the freezer to the injury. Make sure to wrap the frozen item in a towel or some kind of cloth. Applying a very cold item directly to your injury can cause damage to the skin and tissue. Make sure you use cold therapy as quickly as possible after the injury occurs, but only use it for short periods of time throughout the day. Stick to around 10 to 15 minutes at a time to prevent damage to your nerves, tissue and skin. For best results, elevate the injured area while using cold therapy.

Heat therapy should be used if you have pain or stiffness in your joints or muscles. Ten to 15 minutes of heat therapy can help relieve minor pain. Moderate to severe stiffness or tension can be helped with a longer session, such as a hot bath. For this level of pain, you can apply heat therapy from 30 minutes to up to two hours. A bath or sauna can also be used to treat full body pain. Small heat packs can be used on smaller areas of pain. For larger areas, you can use a larger heating pad, heat wraps or even a heated towel.

WHEN SHOULD YOU AVOID COLD OR HEAT PACKS? Do not use cold therapy or heat therapy for open wounds, rashes or infections. Consult your doctor on other pain relief methods if you have poor sensation to heat or cold, if you have poor circulation or if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF THE TREATMENT DOESN’T WORK? If cold therapy or heat therapy does not work or makes your pain worse, immediately contact your physician to discuss other treatment options. You should also let your doctor know if you develop any bruising or skin changes after using cold or heat packs.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR FOR PAIN INSTEAD? If you have severe or persistent issues with your upper body, including the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, or the lower body, including hips, knees, ankles and feet, it’s time to consult a physician. IU Health can help treat your muscle and joint pain so you can move through life at your own pace. Our orthopedics experts are here to help you.
