CEO REBECCA STEVENS HAS LED THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE HUMANE SOCIETY FOR HAMILTON COUNTY’S FACILITY AND PHILOSOPHY Writer / Natalie Gargiulo Photography Provided

The story of Rebecca Stevens, chief executive officer at the Humane Society for Hamilton County, has unfolded as the love for a dog created a pivotal moment that reshaped her path and charted a new course for the shelter. Her journey from the world of marketing to the forefront of animal welfare is marked by what she refers to as a “divine” moment, with the unconditional love for a fourlegged friend. Stevens, initially hesitant due to her limited experience in nonprofits, found herself at a crossroads when the shelter approached her to lead the humane society. “The decision to become part of the shelter was weighing heavily on my heart,” Stevens says. “While I always loved marketing and the financial rewards that came with having a successful career, I was never spiritually fulfilled. My checking account was full, but my soul was on empty.” However, fate intervened in the form of her dog, Maggie, an American bulldog who

8 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

became the catalyst for a profound change in both her life and the shelter she would soon lead. Maggie, tragically becoming a paraplegic, became a compelling reason for Stevens to embrace the role of executive director. Maggie’s need for constant care ignited a passion within Stevens, steering her towards a path of empathy that would redefine the shelter’s mission. “Maggie was my whole life,” Stevens says. “The job that I was currently in was very demanding so I wouldn’t be able to be with Maggie. There was a moment after her injury that a calm came over me, a sense of absolution where I knew what I was going to do. I took the job.”

had a lot of time to dream about the facility that we would design one day - a facility that would mitigate all of the things that we had struggled with throughout the years,” Stevens says. “We made sure the animals had windows and light, and a better quality of life. We finally were able to get the new facility in Fishers, and moved in in 2021.” This created a nurturing environment that was not just about a new shelter; it was recreated with Stevens’ belief that every animal deserves a chance no matter what condition the animal is in, just like Maggie. “I credit my dog, Maggie,” Stevens says. “She never did walk again. However, she singlehandedly influenced the philosophy that I have established for this organization for all of these years - a no-kill shelter that gives every animal a chance.”

Under Stevens’ visionary leadership, the Humane Society for Hamilton County underwent a metamorphosis. The change came in the form of a purpose-built facility designed to provide each resident cat and dog with ample room and access to sunlight. Stevens says donations play “Since being with the humane society, I’ve a crucial role in

funding the care provided by the shelter. The shelter’s impact extends beyond adoptions, encompassing support through fostering, volunteering and corporate partnerships. Stevens aims to spread the message to residents about the desperate need of the shelter. “I implore our supporters and the citizens of Carmel to know that we are your shelter,” Stevens says. “If you love animals and want to support them, please support your local shelter. Rescuing an animal can be so impactful, like Maggie has been to my life. We have so many animals waiting for someone to come and give them a chance.” To donate or volunteer, visit hamiltonhumane.com.

TALK OF OUR TOWN

GAINING PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT MAKES CARMEL A GREAT HOMETOWN Writer / Jeff Worrell Photography Provided

I am originally from a small, typical suburb in Iowa call Urbandale. It is just north of the capital of Iowa, Des Moines, and I have always said it reminds me a lot of Carmel. I am proud to be a native Urbandale boy and I have fond memories of growing up there, in the state known for pigs and corn. I always look forward to heading west for visits with family and attending special occasions. While I am there, things are pretty much the same, as I remember the community while growing up. I don’t recall ever being impressed by anything spectacular or wishing I could bring my friends from Carmel to see my hometown. So it struck me as unique and curious when I had the opportunity to talk to some Carmel graduates over the holiday break. During these casual conversations with sophisticated, successful, flourishing Carmel High School graduates, I noticed a theme. These visitors to Carmel were gushing with praise for their hometown. They were proud to be from here, and excited to tell me about how they found something new, different or improved since their days growing up.

10 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

Once such Carmel alumnus is Sarah Urbanski. She is now happily a southern girl, having lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and now Athens, Georgia, successfully sharing her skills with students at the University of Georgia as a graduate school student affairs administrator. She was especially kind about how she sees the place where she grew up. “I always look forward to coming home to Carmel because of the nostalgia of my hometown, of visiting my family and community, and the places that I grew up alongside,” she says. “But a trip home to Carmel also always brings with it the excitement and anticipation of seeing how the city has changed and grown while I was away, and exploring the new spaces and places that Carmel has to offer.” Urbanski pointed to Midtown as an example of a place she likes to go when she visits Carmel. “I was amazed by the vibrancy of the area surrounded by Allied Solutions, Sun King, and Fork and Ale,” she says. “I see families together making it feel like a small town. It is so easy to walk to another part of Carmel

and have a completely different experience, just like in a big city.” I routinely heard the group praising how easy it is to get around in Carmel due to roundabouts and no stop lights. Urbanski compared her current home of Athens to Carmel. “I am spoiled when I am in Carmel for a few days and then have to go to the Target in Athens,” she says. A trip in Carmel that would take minutes turns into a stop-wait-go, stop-wait-go frustration in Athens. “It takes a while to get over the convenience and efficiency of [roundabouts] after experiencing the luxury of constant movement, when I return to stoplights,” she says. I couldn’t help but think about the difference between my hometown visit conversation and these former Greyhounds. When Carmelites come home, they too see family and friends, but they also get to enjoy a Carmel they didn’t grow up with, offering something new to do, see and enjoy. I hope that makes their visits many and often. Welcome home.

he Modern Collective is a luxury hair salon that provides out-of-thisworld hair transformations.

At The Modern Collective, they provide cuts and colors. But their specialty? Handtied hair extensions. Gabrielle McDougle has dreamed of the opportunity to own her own salon since she was a kid. “I have always said, ‘I want to be the extension girl,’” she says. “I wanted it to be my concentration, and now I’m here owning an extension-specialty salon.” But what exactly are hand-tied extensions? Hand-tied hair extensions involve meticulously hand-tying individual wefts of high-quality hair onto a flexible base. This technique allows for flexibility and movement, ensuring a comfortable and undetectable fit. They offer a seamless and natural-looking solution for clients seeking voluminous, luscious locks. This method allows the extensions to lay flat against the scalp, seamlessly blending with the natural hair, giving it a natural appearance. Hand-tied extensions are a customizable, comfortable and realistic solution. TownePost.com | February 2024 | 13

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

DENNIS, WENGER & ABRELL

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Brian Brosmer

For over 40 years, Dennis, Wenger & Abrell (DWA) has built a reputation for excellence in central Indiana by providing clients unmatched, individual attention in the areas of family law, estate planning, probate law, corporate and business law, civil litigation, and personal injury law. DWA is strengthening their connection to the greater Indianapolis area by opening a new office at 356 Gradle Drive in Carmel. David Karnes, Tara Smalstig, Michael Foley, Anthony Oliveira and Mary Wisehart are each experienced, knowledgeable and skilled attorneys. As a team, they handle nearly every legal issue. “One of the keys to our firm’s longevity is the focus that we put on our relationships with our clients and our community,” says Michael Foley, an attorney with DWA who focuses on the areas of estate planning, estate administration and corporate law. “We want all our clients to know that if they need a will, are starting a new business or have any other legal problem, they have someone who they can trust to advise them. We look forward to building those relationships here in Carmel.”

CARMEL, INDIANA, IS THE LOCATION OF THEIR NEW OFFICE AS THE FIRM EXPANDS. “We searched all over Hamilton County before we found this space a block west of the Palladium,” says Anthony “Tony” Oliveira, a second-generation attorney who focuses on personal injury, workers’ compensation, home improvement fraud, and firearms trusts. “Our proximity to U.S. 31 and Keystone Avenue provides a convenient location for our clients.” “I have practiced in the Hamilton County area since 1993,” adds Mary Wisehart, whose two areas of focus are family law as well as end-of-life planning. “I joined the firm when the Carmel office opened. The firm’s ethics, excellent reputation, as well as the abilities and personalities of the attorneys, were what attracted me.”

Family law, which includes issues related to divorce, paternity, children, support, pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and guardianships, is dynamic as family situations change over time. Those family changes may require modification of The practice of law runs in Wisehart’s family. existing court orders. a judicial officer for four years, presiding over family and probate law cases, such as estate administration and custody disputes. “That experience gave me the perspective from the other side of the bench,” she says. “I have a passion for children, specifically considering what is in their best interest and how that can be accomplished. I have also been trained as a mediator, arbitrator, collaborative law attorney and guardian ad litem. I find in family law cases involving children it is better for the parents and, most importantly, their children, to resolve issues before litigation. An agreement can be crafted for a family’s specific circumstances that may be better suited for them than a court order.”

“It enables people to make important, personal decisions for themselves, rather

than a court making those decisions for them,” says Wisehart, when asked why estate planning is important. “Estate planning sets your wishes out in writing so that there is no confusion about your decisions. Everyone needs to have a power of attorney, advanced health care directive, and most importantly a last will and testament. Most people only associate a will with deciding who will receive your assets. However, a will is about much more than just distributing assets. By appointing a trusted personal representative or executor, you can reduce family conflict. You are also able to make one of the most important decisions of all, determining who will be the guardian for your children if you die.” There are many estate planning options, and the laws change periodically. New tools available to transfer certain assets outside of the court process should be considered in your estate planning. Meeting with an attorney may also dispel inaccurate information that clients get from the

internet and other sources. One area where misinformation runs rampant is trusts. “A trust may offer advantages in some circumstances but may not always be the right choice,” Wisehart says. “Reviewing your estate planning documents periodically is essential, especially if you have had a major life change such as a divorce, death of a family member, significant illness, major injury, or birth of a child.” “Our attorneys are happy to meet with you and explore the legal options for your situation to help you make informed decisions,” Oliveira says. “We offer an hour of consultation at a reduced rate for family law and estate law, and do not charge for personal-injury consultations. When you call us, you are talking and interacting with an attorney, not a paralegal. You won’t get that level of service at a big law firm.” “As a firm, we take a collaborative approach,” Wisehart says. “Each attorney is ready and available to assist each other or discuss

issues in a case. This team approach provides access to the expertise of five attorneys to better help our clients navigate their legal challenges.” “It is such an asset to be able to talk through complex issues with the other members of our team,” Foley says. “I have access to Tara and Mary’s wealth of family law knowledge. If I need to talk through a complex business or civil litigation issue, I can do so with David Karnes. David, Tara, Mary and I all practice in the areas of estate planning and estate administration, so there is always someone to run things by.” Call today at 317-789-8988 to schedule a consultation, and visit dwapc.com for more information.

MAGNIFICENT MOVEMENT

F3 INDIANAPOLIS CHAMPIONS FITNESS, FELLOWSHIP AND FAITH Writer / Lyndsey Brown Photography Provided

F3 Indianapolis is a unique fitness group, as distinctive as its name suggests. Started in Charlotte, North Carolina, F3, which stands for Fitness, Fellowship and Faith, has gained popularity among likeminded men globally. F3 is not affiliated with any religious organization; the leaders define faith as simply a belief in something bigger than yourself. It has grown from a few individuals in a parking lot in Charlotte to approximately 89,500 members since its inception in 2011, with the F3 Indianapolis region consisting of 150 active members. Brian Tullis, a member and leader of the local F3 group, found himself recruited by a neighbor after being spotted walking through his neighborhood carrying a rucksack with a 25-pound weight inside. 20 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

Tullis, now known as Skippy in the group, says the group provides a solution to male isolation. As a transplant to the Carmel area from Chicago, he found himself with a few friends, but had a busy life with a young family. Balancing home life and work, along with the change in residency, he wasn’t as engaged as in previous years. Growing up as a runner, he spent much of his time devoted to a solo exercise routine. F3 changed this. The group, known for its body weight, boot-camp-style workout routines, became much more than a 5:30 a.m. workout. Tullis says the group attracts members through an “emotional headlock,” inviting men to participate in high-intensity workouts led by peer members, with the motto of “Leave no man behind, but leave no man where you found him.” There are

currently 4,336 free peer-led workouts happening every week worldwide. This group of men meets multiple times per week in different locations, early in the morning, always outside - rain or shine. The mission is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men, for the invigoration of male community leadership. The goal is to provide space for men to get fit, make friendships, develop deep community connections and serve others. Each member is encouraged to provide extra energy and support fellow members. The Indianapolis group, known for its unique lingo and nicknaming capabilities, has attracted dozens of “FNGs” (friendly new guys) to the group since 2017. Upon joining the group, members embark on the journey

to develop close meaningful relationships, serve the community and exercise, all at no charge. There is no sign-up - you just show up. The group meets Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. Tullis says the only requirement for membership is to ask yourself, “Will I wake up and show up and give this a chance, even if it starts early?” Carmel has 11 weekly workouts at locations across the city. Each location has a nickname, including Northview Church (The Hill), Carter Green/ Veterans Memorial Park (The Vet), and Clay Terrace (Sesame Street). More information can be found on the F3 website map, or a filtered map on the F3 Indianapolis site, to find locations and times near you. F3 is also active in neighboring communities such as Westfield, north Indy, Noblesville, Fishers and Zionsville. Beyond fitness, the fellowship and faith/service aspects of F3 are crucial components. If you attend, you’ll make new friends through the F3 concept called Coffeeteria, where the leader will sometimes bring coffee for post-workout discussion. In colder months, the group meets at a coffee shop. Someone on the leadership team will randomly assign meetups, which can include outings like lunch or coffee, and give two men an opportunity to get to know one another. In 2024 the local F3 members are hoping to expand and grow their ability to serve Carmel and the greater community. In any given month, they might have one or two service projects organized and led by members. They spread the word about opportunities during workouts and through their social networks. Sometimes these are affiliated with a food pantry, church or other organization. They also put together a team for the 2024 Carmel Winter Games on February 10.

What women need to know about heart disease

Writer / Dr. Sujoy Phookan, cardiologist at IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals

February is American Heart Month, an annual observance that encourages people across the country to focus on their

cardiovascular health and live a more hearthealthy lifestyle. Historically, there has been a misconception that heart disease primarily affects men. However, the truth is starkly different. Heart disease, including coronary

artery disease, is the leading cause of death among women globally, surpassing all forms of cancer combined. It is important to know the risk factors and recognize the symptoms of heart disease in women.

To learn more about heart disease and treatment options, visit iuhealth.org/heart. 22 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

KNOW THE SYMPTOMS.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE.

Coronary artery disease and heart attacks often present with chest pain in both women and men. These atypical symptoms can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment.

Conditions unique to women, including pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and preterm delivery, can increase the likelihood of heart disease later in life. Other conditions that predominantly affect women, such as breast cancer and autoimmune diseases, also increase the risk. Additionally, post-menopause, when estrogen levels decline, women’s risk of heart disease rises.

Addressing the risk factors of heart disease involves a multifaceted approach. Everyone should strive to get regular aerobic exercise and adopt a hearthealthy diet which limits processed carbohydrates, excess sugar and saturated fats, while including plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Smoking cessation and stress management are also highly encouraged. Everyone should see their primary care physician yearly for routine screenings and discussion of their heart disease risk factors. Women should discuss any of their female-specific risks with their provider. Anyone who has significant concerns about heart disease can ask for a referral to a cardiologist.

There are several common risk factors that contribute to heart disease in both men and women. These include age, diet, genetics and other coexisting conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. Smoking, lack of physical activity, obesity and high-stress levels also heighten the risk substantially.

EVERYTHING’S WORKING OUT FIT IS THE FOCUS AT EXERCISE INC Writer / Michelle Kaufman Photographer / Justin Sicking

The team at Exercise Inc is helping each client increase their strength, through one weekly 20-minute workout. Founder Bo Railey has been a personal trainer since 1993, and brought the training method, called the SuperSlow program, to Zionsville 15 years ago. “I like to help people and personal training is a great way to help people change their lives,” Railey said. “Your physical, mental and spiritual health are all very intimately 24 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

connected. When you help somebody improve their physical health, you improve every aspect of their life. That’s why I enjoy personal training.” Clients range from teenagers, including high school athletes, to adults in their 90s. “There’s a number of reasons why people come in,” said Manager Sid Morris. “Helping clients reach their goals is the greatest achievement that we can do, and it’s what drives my passion.”

Exercise Inc employs personal trainers and each person works out one-on-one with a coach. Coaches will set up the routine and machines for that day’s workout and help the client through. “My client doesn’t have to think too much,” Morris said. “They just have to go in there and perform and give it all they’ve got. It’s a high-intensity workout. You’ll do about five machines within the session to address all the major muscle groups of the body.”

There’s no music playing and no mirrors on the walls, and trainers wear dress shirts and slacks. “When you go back in the room, the most you’ll have is three to four trainers at one time with their client,” said Morris, who just started his 19th year with the business. “We have our machines and we’re there to get the job done. We call it your personal, private, professional environment.” In addition to the workouts, clients also receive a nutrition plan, regardless of what their goals are. Tracking is available for those who want to lose weight, while others may use the plan to learn about and adopt healthy habits.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

RENEWAL HEALTH and well-being,” Reilly said. “The name Renewal Health reflects my desire to help people move from our conventional health care approach, which treats chronic disease - usually in a silo - to treating the person in a holistic manner and not just as someone with a given illness.”

Writer / Michelle Kaufman Photographer / Krystal Dailey

For more than 20 years, Mary J. Reilly, MD, FACEP, DABOM, IFMCP served patients as an emergency physician. Reilly was known as the doctor who would spend extra time listening and talking to patients who might have needed that more than additional testing. Through her work, she saw opportunities where the health care system could do better and developed a desire to improve patient quality of life with a different approach. In August Reilly opened Renewal Health in Zionsville. The business name reflects Reilly’s desire to treat people in a holistic manner and, as the practice’s motto runs, “Taking you from sick care to well care.” “I opened this practice because I feel like I

can offer a lot to people to improve not only their lifespan, but their health span,” Reilly said, adding that telehealth appointments are available after initial patient visits. “I want to help people discover what good health looks like to them and then make a plan to get them there.” Renewal Health offers weight loss and functional medicine services - two areas where Reilly has spent the last several years training and getting certified. Reilly’s approach to both groups of patients is holistic in nature with a focus on five areas: sleep, diet or nutrition, emotional health, exercise or movement, and pharmacotherapy and supplements.

Patients start with an initial consultation with Reilly, which lasts from 90 minutes to two hours. Patients go through a body composition and metabolism test as well as an exam. From there, Reilly focuses on a personalized patient experience and drafts a treatment plan. She works with individuals on areas like food, sleep and emotional health. Reilly also has her CrossFit L1 certification and offers strength training programs. “I feel like I’m seeing a really great variety of people right now, from the person who wanted to make sure that they were as healthy as they could be to the person who had recovered from cancer to the people that come to see me for weight loss,” Reilly said. “This is really fantastic for me to be able to follow people in time, and see the change that they’re making and how their hard work pays off.”

“Functional medicine takes a comprehensive approach to prevention, health,

CARMEL RESIDENT OFFERS SKIN CARE EXPERTISE THE SKIN IS THE BODY’S LARGEST ORGAN — AND CARMEL RESIDENT DR. MELANIE KINGSLEY BELIEVES EVERYONE NEEDS TO HAVE AN EFFECTIVE SKIN CARE REGIMEN. However, for a long time, she couldn’t bring herself to wholeheartedly endorse any products out there. So, the board-certified and fellowship-trained dermatologist founded SkinTherapyMD, which operates out of Zionsville and manufactures her own formulations for treating the most common skin care concerns. “Throughout my career as a dermatologist, the two most common concerns I heard from patients were about acne and how to slow or reverse the aging process,” Dr. Kingsley said. “After years of trying different products and various treatment regimens, I just wasn’t satisfied with the options available. That’s why I created the CAMU skin care lines — natural, high-quality skin care products that are effective, simple to use, free of unnecessary chemicals and gentle on the skin.”

by combining the most effective ingredients into one formulation to give patients the desired results. “Both regimens consist of two simple steps — an exfoliating pad to help remove the dead skin cells and allow the nutrients into the skin; and then a serum to deliver and seal in the essential ingredients,” Dr. Kingsley said. “It is the power duo.” The CAMU ClearSkin Bundle is now available with the serum and wipes — with or without a cleanser. And the CAMU Anti-Aging Bundle is now available with the resurfacing pads and moisturizing serum — with or without the gentle hydrating cleanser. “It’s been so rewarding developing this skin care line and seeing the benefits it has brought to so many people,” Dr. Kingsley said.

These products use ingredients Dr. Kingsley found to be most effective across nearly 20 years of treating patients.

Dr. Kingsley stands by these products professionally and personally, offering them not only to patients but also using them to treat friends, family and herself.

CAMU ClearSkin is specifically targeted toward acne-prone patients with oily skin, clogged pores or inflamed acne bumps. The product line helps treat acne, exfoliate the skin and seal in hydration while promoting a healthy skin barrier.

SkinTherapyMD is continually updating formulations and adding products for all skin types, which are available for customers to purchase as needed or on a monthly subscription basis. These products can be found online at skintherapymd.com or in local medical spas and dermatology offices as they expand throughout 2024.

CAMU Anti-Aging helps slow and reverse the signs of sun damage and aging, lightens brown spots and softens fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps adult acne, rosacea and keratosis pilaris and reduces the visibility of pores. Both the CAMU ClearSkin and CAMU Anti-Aging lines remove several steps from your skin care routine
