FITNESS CLINIC OF INDY FOCUSES ON FUNDAMENTALS
Writer / Ely Ayers
Photographer / Michael Durr
For many resolute Americans coast to coast, New Year’s Day is the annual symbol of an important and self-empowering lifestyle change - “New year, new me.” At least that’s what the intention is, right? America’s multibillion-dollar fitness industry comes with no shortage of promises to help renew us in a multitude of ways. While the renewal sounds promising, the road to the ultimate goal or achievement is often complex to navigate.
Sam Woodworth, exercise physiologist and owner of local health and fitness center Fitness Clinic of Indy, knows the challenge firsthand, both as a business owner and as an industry consumer.
“What I tell people is that the industry is very unique because there is a great deal of different information, pseudoscience and parttruths, which do confuse people,” Woodworth says. “It leads people to ask themselves, ‘Who can I trust? Is the paleo diet in? Is the keto diet in? What about this specific technique? What about that vitamin brand or supplement?’ It’s a lot to take in at one time.”
Sam Woodworth - Exercise Physiologist and Owner of Fitness Clinic of Indy.
Often in professional sports, the complex nature of the game and the high frequency of pressures that the sport comes with cause players or teams to become self-defeating by what many describe as “getting in your own way.” Much like professional athletes, fitness beginners looking to succeed in their renewed health-focused lifestyle can often get caught up in the high number of moving parts, options and methods. At the end of the day, the most common solution across
the board is a simple one. That solution is what Woodworth explains his facility’s identity is based on - the fundamentals.
“No one is going to debate whether or not broccoli or other vegetables, for example, are good for you, today or tomorrow,” Woodworth says.
“That’s pretty much settled. No one is going to debate whether or not we need six to eight hours of sleep. That’s pretty much settled. We need

exercise, strength training, growing flexibility and things of that nature. It’s all settled that we need those things, and for us, we are here because we aim to become a trusted source that helps people figure out exactly what they need at this stage in their life.”
In a world where corporate gym chains, supplement companies, health magazines and fitness models hold a great amount of leverage, the consumer seeking validation and self-worth through a physical change can become vulnerable and easy to sway in the process. A quick-fix search for six packs, beach bodies and a sense of self-esteem is often thought to be related to the amount of dollars one is willing spend, and the amount of supplements one is willing to consume. First-time fitness consumers often rush to their nearest gym chain in hopes of finding the answers, or a facility that is invested in them and their community. During that process, consumers often overlook local health and fitness clubs whose entire aim is to help local consumers, and has been since the start. Woodworth takes pride in not breaking morals for anything.
“We stick to our moral compass, which is more valuable than any kind of extra money we could bring in by partnering with supplement or equipment companies,” Woodworth says. “Our goal is to build long-term relationships with our customers to earn their trust. I’m perfectly fine with doing a really great job in impacting the people in our community that we can affect, and if we are bursting at the seams later on and have an opportunity to expand and make the reach even greater, we could talk about that later on.”
Woodworth’s business model is focused almost entirely on personal relationships with trainers, their clients, and the importance of their progress and health. It houses local personal trainers like independent contractors who are looking for a private, comfortable and spacious place to train the clients they bring in and help. The facility also hosts various fitness classes with in-house trainers that may include indoor cycling, a fitness bootcamp, group classes, and rotating classes throughout the year.
“We want to take the judgement out of this journey for people, and allow them to take their guards down a bit,” Woodworth says. “We want clients to know that we are on the same team, and are aiming to avoid things that can be packaged and sold from an ideas standpoint. Though we stay in our lane, if our clients do need things outside of our scope of practice, we want to partner with local business to bridge that gap for them, but still not overcomplicate the fitness journey.”
For Woodworth and Fitness Clinic of Indy, it’s imperative that local fitness consumers feel that their goals are valued, and that they understand that they’re not just a gym application or an account number. Integrity with clients is important to Woodworth, and if by the end of December clients have achieved what they intended in early January, he will have felt he did his job, all through the common thread of it all - the fundamentals.

NEW JOINT IN TOWN
QC KINETIX OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT FOR JOINT ISSUES - WITHOUT SURGERY

new business has come to Carmel. Introducing QC Kinetix, offering treatment for joint pain - without the surgery.
Carmel is their third location in the Indianapolis area, and they officially opened in early February.
QC Kinetix is bringing exciting and modern treatments to their patients. The company offers regenerative medicine as an alternative to those who have been told surgery is their only option.
Your body has an innate ability to repair and heal any tissue.
But what exactly is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine addresses the underlying problem, not just the symptom. Providers will collect a patient’s blood or bone marrow and take it to the in-house lab. At the lab, QC Kinetix will separate the vital cells concentrating it in a way your body isn’t anymore and reintroducing it back into the affected area so it can finally heal. These are important cells that address the damage in our bodies - platelets, stem cells and proteins.
QC Kinetix repairs and restores patients’ injuries through all-natural therapies, and these procedures are customized to the patient. Dr. Frank Kearse, the medical director and a board-certified physician, is able to address many different joints, most commonly knee, shoulder and hip.
Kearse has spent more than 15 years in the

emergency and family medicine fields. He routinely practices in a hospital setting, but has a dedicated passion to pursue the alternative-treatment therapy.
“As an ER doctor in a hospital setting, it’s a lot of quick fixes and not much follow-up with patients,” Kearse says. “With this clinic, I get to see patients as soon as six weeks later who are feeling so much better, and that’s really cool to see.”
The company is owned by Drew White and Mike Sample, who handle the operations of the business.
With a background in medical sales and orthopedic products, White and Sample have seen the solutions and relief that these treatments have brought to patients. They explored the possibility of franchising a business to bring their passions to life. Timing played a vital role in this process, and eventually the two were able to pursue QC Kinetix and bring an amazing opportunity to Indy.
“When opening a franchise, we had a checklist we referenced,” White explains. “One box we had to check off was a business that would make a difference in people’s lives and make a difference in the community.”
So what does this process include?
When a patient decides to move forward with QC Kinetix, they will schedule a consultation with a patient-care advocate. This person reviews the expectations and overview of the process with the patient. The next step is for the patient to meet with

a medical provider who completes a full evaluation, to confirm if the patient is a good candidate for the treatment. If so, the medical provider will recommend a treatment plan. The patient will meet with their patient-care advocate to confirm if this treatment plan is a good fit for the patient.
The best part? Patients can start treatment the very same day as their consultation, and they are in and out in 45-minute appointments.
“Many clients of ours are trying to return to jobs, their hobbies or their lifestyles as soon as possible after treatment, and QC Kinetix can give them that option without the downtime of surgery,” Sample says.
Change the way you think about nonsurgical treatments. Consider your options regarding your next step to better health and quality of life.

ULTIMATE NINJAS STRENGTHENS AND INSPIRES ALL AGES
exercise it takes to compete in the show’s extreme challenges.
Contestants Michael Silenzi and Jesse Labreck have appeared on the show for nine and seven seasons respectively. They love what they do and are determined to expose others to the passion and positivity that comes with the process.
“I started on the show 10 years ago and that was before there were gyms where you could practice this kind of stuff,” Silenzi says. “I immediately thought it was amazing and I wanted to see this become a new sport. I instantly had the idea that we needed a gym so people could try it out.”
to grow, Labreck came on board, and today the three own and manage five gym locations, including their newest at the Hamilton County Sports Complex in Noblesville.
The Noblesville gym looks like what Silenzi calls a “jungle gym on steroids with lots of safety pads,” and it’s attracting all ages to the unique combination of exercise, challenge and fun.
If you’re familiar with NBC’s hit television show “American Ninja Warrior,” you might have an idea of the type of training and
Jeff Piejak had a similar idea and partnered with Silenzi to open the first Ultimate Ninjas gym in Chicago. As they continued
“We have adult fitness classes in the morning, a Little Ninja program for ages 3 to 5, and classes after school for ages 6 to 18,” Silenzi says. “I think initially I wanted to open a gym for selfish reasons. I wanted to train for the show. What I didn’t realize at the time is how many kids would watch the show and become obsessed. The kids want to be ninja warriors and we’re training the

next generation for competition.”
Labreck loves watching the students grow and challenge themselves.
“It’s honestly pretty incredible,” Labreck says. “The confidence these kids are building, particularly the ones that might not connect with traditional sports - they really feel empowered. There’s always another goal or obstacle to achieve.”
Silenzi loves the training aspect.
“It’s such a challenge to overcome something you didn’t know you could do,” he says. “There’s a lot of adrenaline, and we’re using our body the way it’s meant to be used by running, jumping, swinging and other physical outlets. It’s like a great workout without it feeling like work.”
In addition, the unique workout complements other sports kids are involved in, from baseball to football, and many students continue participating on the ninja team through high school.
“There’s nothing like it in the area,” Silenzi says. “We watch the kids have fun, get stronger and learn new techniques every single day.”
For those interested in taking their ninja skills to the next level, ninjas as young as 6 to 8 can join a league and compete across the country.
“If you aren’t old enough to get picked for the show, there are several leagues out there to compete against,” Labreck says. “We’ll host our own World League competition in Noblesville this January, giving people the option to compete right now.”
Labreck will appear in an upcoming Valentine’s Day episode of “American Ninja Warrior.” Catch Labreck and Silenzi on previous seasons of the show.
Ultimate Ninjas is located at 9625 East 150th Street in Noblesville. For more information, call 317-473-7480 or visit ultimateninjas.com.

Tim and Stephanie C. selected Carrington Homes to build their twostory Greenfield home.
“When we were looking for a premier builder to build our dream home, we thought word of mouth was the best way to find one,” Stephanie says. “Our question to former Carrington Homes customers was always, ‘Would you build with them again?’ Every time we heard a resounding, ‘absolutely!’ The building process was streamlined, efficient and professional.”
Doug and Ally K. share a similar positive experience. The couple used Carrington Homes to build their 6,000-square-feet Fishers home.
“We have built several homes over the years and naturally every process has their inconveniences,” Doug says. “With Carrington Homes, regardless of our question or inquire, they were responsive and thorough. They always were quick to address anything we needed, and they did so with personal touch and care.
“Everyone at Carrington, from Carl the owner, to the superintendent to the cleaning crews, are awesome people. It can be cliché, but they treat everyone like family and always go above and beyond to exceed expectations.”

the Islamic Center of Muncie before changing his course after members of the mosque welcome him with open arms.
For as long as she can remember, Bibi Bahrami has made compassion a priority.
“I was blessed to be born to a family who were always helping others in the village where I was born,” Bahrami says, an Afghan refugee who has called Muncie home for several decades now.
Bahrami’s kindness is on full display in the short documentary, “Stranger at the Gate,” which is up for an Oscar in March. Directed by Joshua Seftel, “Stranger at the Gate” tells the story of Richard ‘Mac’ McKinney, a former Marine from Indiana. He plots an attack on
Before moving to Muncie in 1986, Bibi Bahrami and her family were faced with traumatic circumstances following the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.
“At age 13, my life changed to a nightmare,” Bahrami says. “Our country was taken over by the Soviet invasion, and our peaceful life changed. We had to leave our home with the clothes on our back and go to the refugee camp in Pakistan. It took us two days, and my mother was eight months pregnant. We then lived in the refugee camp and tried to survive.”
Bahrami met her husband, Saber Bahrami, at this refugee camp. He returned to the U.S. prior to Bibi and was able to pursue a career in healthcare. After finding stability as a doctor at Ball Memorial Hospital, Saber brought his wife Bibi to Muncie, where they still live today. Upon arriving in Muncie, Bibi quickly started looking for ways that she could make a difference in the community.
“It was my personal mission to make where I lived a better place,” she says. “We invested in our community and helped in any way we could.”
As co-founders of the Islamic Center of Muncie, Bibi and Saber made it even

more of a priority to be involved in their community following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
“After 9/11, this became a double and triple priority because of the misunderstandings and Islamophobia,” she says. “Our religion was attacked. Our identities were attacked. We were concerned about our children and our grandchildren. This was the country where we chose to live. We came to have peace here and ran away from all this trauma.”
Featured in “Stranger at the Gate,” Richard ‘Mac’ McKinney is just one example of someone who has been touched by the Bahrami family. As the short documentary details, McKinney initially began visiting the Islamic Center of Muncie with the intent of plotting a terrorist attack on the mosque. Eventually, however, his plans change after getting to know the Bahramis and having dinner with them at their home.
“Usually, if there’s a concern or misunderstanding, I invite those people over,” she says. “We have dinner, and I break the ice to start a conversation about the mission of our organization.”
“McKinney loved the authentic Afghani food that I cooked for him,” Bahrami says. “Then, I sat down and I bluntly said to him, ‘I heard this rumor, and I wanted to talk to you in person to see if it’s true.’ He put his head down, and it took him a while, but he said, ‘I’m ashamed, but that’s true. This is what I had planned.’”

director Joshua Seftel eventually reached out to Bibi Bahrami to see if she would be interested in being a part of a documentary. At first, admits she was a little hesitant. Following a near-death experience, though, Bahrami agreed to take part in the documentary in hopes that the story could impact generations to come.
“I said, ‘God gave me a second life. By helping this documentary, this message will live. And hopefully, humanity can benefit from it,’” Bibi says. “That was my prayer with my own creator.”
Much to her delight, “Stranger at the Gate” has now reached viewers far and wide, thanks to the excellent work of Seftel and his team.
