MUSICALS ON THE MIND

ACTORS THEATRE OF INDIANA ANNOUNCES SHOWS FOR 2024-2025 SEASON

Actors Theatre of Indiana (ATI) has announced the shows that will be performed during their 2024-2025 season, which also happens to be their 20th anniversary.

The season will kick off on September 13 with “Ring of Fire.” The show celebrates the iconic Johnny Cash - the Man in Black - whose razor-sharp vocals and strippeddown country sound helped shape the American rock-and-roll landscape in the 20th century. The musical follows Cash’s early life in the cotton fields of Arkansas, and moves to Memphis as he launches his music career, hits it big and marries the love of his life, June Carter. Five actor-musicians deliver crowd-pleasing renditions of Cash’s musical catalog, from country rock and roll to searing ballads of love and faith, including “I Walk the Line,” “Folsom Prison Blues,”

“I’ve Been Everywhere” and, of course, “Ring of Fire.” A toe-tapping, soul-stirring musical biography like never before, “Ring of Fire” celebrates the music that has become a part of our collective experience.

To get us into the holiday spirit, ATI will present “She Loves Me: A Holiday Love Story” starting November 1. “She Loves Me” is a euphoric, holiday-themed romantic comedy with a soaring score that shares its source material with the classic movies “The Shop Around the Corner,” “In the Good Old Summertime” and “You’ve Got Mail.” Amalia and Georg work together at a modest Hungarian perfumery and have disliked each other from the very beginning. He thinks she’s stuck up, and she thinks he’s arrogant and mean. Each rapturously writes to a lonely-hearts pen pal when the workday is done, and it doesn’t take long for the

audience to see that they’re in love without realizing it. Inevitably, through some of the most iconic songs in the musical theater canon, (“Vanilla Ice Cream”, “She Loves Me”, “Will He Like Me?”), Georg and Amalia discover the truth, and rejoice in their love for each other at the story’s sweet and musically delightful conclusion.

Whodunit? Find out in 2025 as the season continues with, yes, “Whodunit: the Musical.” Beginning January 31, the musical by longtime Broadway actor and playwright Ed Dixon is a farcical musical mystery based on “The Circular Staircase” and “The Bat” by Mary Roberts Rinehart, often considered America’s Agatha Christie. A wealthy spinster and her cockney maid take a beautiful Connecticut summer home in 1931. When they arrive, all of the help has quit, except for a very odd butler who

warns that something strange is going on. They are soon joined by the spinster’s niece, who’s brought a friend - a “friend” who turns out to be a young man! After a night of attempted break-ins, the sound of gunshots and the discovery of a dead body - or two - the detective arrives and things get really strange. “Whodunit” is a tuneful, riotous romp that’s part mystery, part drawing-room farce and all musical comedy.

The season will wrap up beginning on April 25, 2025, with “9 to 5.” Based on the 1980 movie of the same name, the musical features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought provoking and even a little romantic. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasygiving their boss the boot! This musical is a celebration of friendship, empowerment and the pursuit of a fair and equal working environment.

Courtney Senousy is a big believer in the idea that access to the right resources can set people up for success…and she is on a mission to do just that.

As Senousy grew up, she always struggled with finding a sense of belonging, searching for anything she could grasp onto. At 19 she

gave birth to her daughter, and then raised her while attending college. As she tried to break the generational cycles that continued to make her feel as though she was hitting roadblock after roadblock, the pieces fell into place, and she found her purpose - to pave the way for others.

“At that point my entire life shifted,” says

Senousy, who began to address the pain and trauma she had experienced. “I became grateful for those experiences because they made me who I was becoming.”

She came to understand that belonging comes from within oneself, not from outside validation. As she worked to pull herself out of homelessness, she asked God

PARTNER IN PURPOSE

THE HOUSE: 1922 HELPS CLIENTS SHOW UP AND STEP UP

to place her where she was needed. She felt an urge to serve people in some capacity; she just needed to ascertain what that looked like.

She built her first business while using a cracked iPhone, held together with tape. When she used it, her thumbs would bleed. One week, instead of buying groceries, she

opted to purchase a coaching program to teach herself marketing skills. This led to learning how to build a website, and then transferring this knowledge to others in her community. As fate would have it, she wandered into the world of working with mission-driven individuals on journeys similar to hers, and eventually working for and consulting with major nonprofits

throughout the city.

Senousy found that a lot of nonprofits are born out of passion, but the people who launch them don’t always have access to the resources they need to amplify their voices. She launched House of Shamaiah (which means “God heard”) to provide one-on-one coaching for people who feel a purpose in their life but don’t know how to access it.

She was ramping up her business when her mother died unexpectedly, which was a devastating blow. For a time, she limited her clientele at the House of Shamaiah, focusing more on larger, more established nonprofit contracts. Despite doing very little marketing, people would always find her. She worked her way up the ladder in the nonprofit industry and studied at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, leaning into a strong skillset of fundraising and development through the realization she could help people accomplish more if they were properly funded.

“I started to get my momentum back and began to feel the urge to return back to House of Shamaiah full time,” she says. “I recognized quickly, this time had been a moment to sharpen my skills, heal on a deeper level and provide a higher level of services to those I served. I also recognized a need for bigger organizations to expand their growth, either through strategic planning, innovative change management, or professional development.”

This led to the rebirth of House of Shamaiah, now called simply The House: 1922. Named after her great-grandmother, who was born in 1922, The House: 1922 covers everything from inception, launching, scaling and, most importantly, sustaining. In business it’s common for people to feel overwhelmed, not really knowing where to start, what to do or how to focus their mission. Senousy and her team help define what a client wants to create, then dig deep to help them bring it to life.

“We ask our clients to reflect on what they are really passionate about so that

“ There’s a difference between doing it with you and doing it for you. We show them how to build it out.”
— Courtney Senousy

we can develop that into something that’s impactful,” Senousy says. “It all starts with reflection.”

The mission is to empower and equip those who are operating in a purpose-driven organization, whether that’s a nonprofit, a social enterprise, or a corporation that’s seeking to be more socially responsible. Senousy provides an arsenal of online tools, and she provides monthly group life coaching. In addition, she invites subjectmatter experts like lawyers and accountants to speak monthly so they can shed light on legalities or public relations.

The House: 1922 offers comprehensive programs that equip clients with the skills and tools they need to thrive as businesses. Services are offered through an online academy and community, including an app, a local nonprofit incubator and accelerator program that is entirely unique, and a bespoke professional development program that mixes comedy and professionals and offers in-person sessions coupled with comedy and personalized VIP experiences where strategy is king.

“From tailored professional development to expert-led courses, every resource we offer is designed to foster your team’s growth and enhance your organization’s impact,” Senousy says. “We offer a unique blend of community, coaching and consulting to address the multifaceted needs of missiondriven organizations. From our Altruistic Academy Collective to personalized VIP experiences, every offering is crafted to empower you on your mission.”

The Altruist Academy Collective, while robust, is affordable, which was important to Senousy, who wanted these resources to

be accessible to everybody.

“If you’re looking for a community of likeminded people who are experiencing the same journey as you in real time, that’s very powerful,” Senousy says.

For those who need intensive help, they offer the House VIP experiences, where Senousy’s team comes in for eight to 10 hours for three to five days, to work handson with folks.

“It’s like going to a bootcamp,” she says. “Our team becomes their team. We set them up for success with an extended strategy that will carry them through. What you leave with is so powerful.”

Sometimes an organization requires a complete operational overhaul, so Senousy and her team do a deep dive and identify the major gaps, and make sure their team is aligned in what they are doing.

“There’s a difference between doing it with you and doing it for you,” Senousy says. “We show them how to build it out.”

The final piece is the Professional and Team Elevation packages, where they build out packages that last between 12 and 18 months and include biweekly accountability check-ins. If organizations aren’t ready for this step, The House: 1922 offers an incubator and accelerator cohort that gathers individuals from several organizations for four to 12 weeks at a time to support their growth. This includes a mastermind and individualized partnership sessions where they work with individuals one-on-one.

“A lot of these organizations don’t know

how to get through to people, so I connect people by attending networking events,” Senousy says.

For example, she recently went to a women in business networking event where someone told her that, although they had been giving to a large nonprofit for years, they didn’t feel the impact they were making and longed to be more involved with the local organization.

“I happened to have a client who needed construction support, so I matched these two organizations and both were left incredibly fulfilled,” Senousy says. “Now they do staff volunteer days, employee giving programs, and company matches for giving that get their teams involved, so they can witness the impact they’re making locally in our city.”

The 30-minute strategic alignment call is free. During this call, Senousy listens intently so she can deliver an instant strategy. “We come up with a tight strategic development or marketing strategy,” Senousy says. “Then we can talk about building out philanthropic vehicles that are going to enhance and sustain the client’s vision.”

Senousy wants mission-driven individuals to know support is available for them, and wants corporations to feel like they are giving back in a way that emphasizes social responsibility.

“We see them and acknowledge the work they put in,” she says. “We’re here to empower and equip. However we show up and serve, it’s for the betterment of society.”

WESTFIELD PREMIER PHYSICIANS

Drs. Robert Habig, Mary Pat Forkin and Elaine Habig are board-certified physicians who have served families in Carmel and surrounding areas for years. As founders of the American Health Network (AHN), they aimed to provide high-quality, affordable health care through independent practices.

However, after AHN was acquired by Optum (UnitedHealthcare) in 2016, they became disillusioned with the corporatization of health care. They envisioned a model where doctors could prioritize patient care over corporate interests, spending more time with patients and providing accessible, comprehensive care without insurance company interference.

This led them to establish a direct

primary care practice, Westfield Premier Physicians (WPP). The practice operates on a membership basis, offering patients unlimited visits, 24/7 availability, and sameday or next-day appointments without the wait times. Forkin emphasizes that their approach is rooted in a direct, unmediated relationship between doctor and patient, free from the constraints of insurance companies.

To ensure the longevity of the practice, the doctors have welcomed Dr. Mazhar (Mo) Khan, a board-certified family physician, to the practice. Khan likens direct primary care to concierge medicine, but at a more affordable price point, making it accessible to a broader population. He highlights the shortcomings of traditional health care, where family doctors often manage 2,500 to 3,000 patients, leading to rushed

appointments and a lack of personal connection. At WPP, doctors manage a smaller patient load, allowing for 30-minute appointments or longer if needed.

Khan notes a growing cultural shift toward a more holistic approach to health, where patients seek to improve their lifestyle rather than rely solely on medication. He emphasizes the importance of patient education, helping people understand their conditions and the impact of their lifestyle choices on their health.

At WPP, continuity of care is a priority. Patients have direct access to their doctors through a secure portal, even outside regular office hours. This approach builds trust and ensures personalized care, considering each patient’s unique background, culture and circumstances. Khan is committed to maintaining this level of care, valuing quality over quantity, and believes that if more people had access to this type of care, it could significantly improve overall health outcomes.

BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER INDIANAPOLIS PRESENTS

2024 CENTIER BANK HOME-A-RAMA

September has arrived, and with that comes the 2024 Centier Bank Home-A-Rama home show, which features five luxurious show homes crafted by five of central Indiana’s premier custom home builders. This year’s show will span three weekends: September 12-15, 19-22, and 26-29, with tours taking place between noon and 8:30 p.m.

This year Home-A-Rama is at Henke Development’s Promontory of Zionsville, an upscale neighborhood that offers

residents the perfect blend of town and country. An equestrian-style community, Promontory has two-plus-acre estate homesites, rolling hills, beautiful trees, and an expansive 35-acre lake ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. While surrounded by nature, one is also minutes away from local attractions like the Grand Park Sports Campus, West Fork Whiskey Co., and Urban Vines.

This year’s builders are G&G Custom Homes, Kent Shaffer Homes & Randy

Shaffer Custom Homes, Old Town Design Group, Sigma Builders, and Wedgewood Building Company.

“This year’s show offers a unique experience with five fabulous builders and five very different showcase homes,” says Drake Branda, COO of BAGI.

G&G’s five-bedroom, five-and-one-halfbathroom, 8,000-square-foot modern European vineyard-style home features luxurious outdoor living spaces, including a

rooftop sky deck with glass doors, a covered porch off the great room with sliding pocket doors, a chef’s dream kitchen with adjoining catering kitchen, and lakeside views with a private boat slip.

A collaboration between Randy Shaffer Custom Homes and Kent Shaffer Homes offers a stunning, European cottagestyle waterfront home that’s 8,741 square feet, and includes six bedrooms, five full baths and two half baths. The house features a covered porch with motorized screens, lower-level bar and lounge with an outdoor pass-through countertop, gourmet kitchen with dual islands, custom backlit wine room, and large-scale glass that showcases floating stairs.

Old Town Design Group built a transitional European home with five bedrooms, five bathrooms and two half-bathrooms. The 8,000-square-foot home features timeless design elements including unique entertainment zones and open-concept spaces that enable an abundance of natural light and conversation, making the home feel big, bright and beautiful.

Sigma Builders’ transitional equestrian and Lexington contemporary design offers a 10,000-plus-square-foot structure with five bedrooms, five bathrooms and two half bathrooms. The home features a craft room, wine cellar, executive home office, and floorto-ceiling windows that highlight a view of the lake and an acre and a half of woods.

Wedgewood Building Company crafted a traditional, family-focused home, complete with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and one half bathroom. The 12,000-plus-squarefoot home boasts an extra kitchen and pantry, a fully finished basement with media area and theater seating, a game area, and a playroom. It also features a wraparound front porch and corresponding rear outdoor living area, complete with a fireplace, roll-up screens, a wet bar, and an upstairs loft and reading room.

During the show attendees can chat with the featured builders, in addition to mingling with suppliers and interior designers who helped bring these gorgeous homes to fruition.

Centier Bank is the title sponsor for HomeA-Rama. Additional sponsors include 84 Lumber, Lee Supply Corp., and McComb Window & Door Co., Inc. Bentley of Indianapolis is the auto sponsor. The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI) is pleased to collaborate with partners who are dedicated to putting on an incredible home show. From landscaping and lighting to the development of the streetscape and the parking lot, dozens upon dozens of hours go into the prep work of the site and the event.

“This show highlights the amazing market we live in,” Branda says. “We work hard to make Home-A-Rama an experience, not just a home tour. Home-A-Rama highlights the camaraderie and partnerships we

have in the market as well as the exciting neighborhoods in development.”

In addition this year, BAGI is offering several special events. They’re hosting Wine & Design on Thursday, September 19, which will include hors d’oeuvres and wine, while guests can hear directly from the interior designers of each showcase home to learn about the latest in home design trends. Plus, Thursday, September 26 is Hometown Heroes Day, during which they’ll offer discounted tickets to veterans, police officers, firefighters, military personnel, health care workers, and teachers.

We wanted to add an event to show our appreciation to these special members of our community,” Branda says.

In addition, Friday, September 13 is Realtor Day, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., when realtors are invited to enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at each show home.

Home-A-Rama tickets are sold in 30-minute time blocks, which helps to space out the traffic. Prices vary depending on your time slot. It’s $30 from noon to 3 p.m., $25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and $20 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Virtual tickets are $10.

As in past years, there will be food and drink vendors on hand. Plus, Hittle has created a relaxation area for attendees.

“You can make it a date night or bring your family for a great time,” Branda says. “You

can spend an hour walking through houses or hang out for three hours.”

Because the neighborhood is so expansive, homes are set back a bit further than usual. Therefore, the Centier Bank trolley will make its rounds, along with regular golf carts, to transport attendees, but be sure to wear your walking shoes.

Homebuilders, interior designers and potential homeowners alike can benefit from attending this magnificent home show, designed to provide attendees with inspiration and a greater appreciation for the talent in central Indiana.

“This home show is truly a celebration of the industry,” says Branda.

A RUNDOWN OF RECENT HOME REMODELING TRENDS

Carmel has experienced a surge in new construction in recent years, but existing homeowners are not being outdone. Instead, they’re investing in remodeling to transform their houses into personalized havens. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) of Central Indiana, the only organization that offers credentialing for professionals in its industry, shared some of the trends that have emerged this year.

Unsurprisingly, kitchens remain the heart of the home, as homeowners embrace modern designs for these significant transformations. Open-concept layouts, high-end appliances, and luxurious finishes like quartz or granite are in high demand. To optimize space and storage, walk-in pantries and functional islands have become essential features.

Beyond the kitchen, bathrooms are undergoing luxurious glow-ups as well. Carmel residents are creating spa-like retreats featuring walk-in, zero-entry showers, steam rooms, and heated floors. Freestanding tubs are also still on trend, adding both design and function to the en suite. The inclusion of high-end fixtures and dual vanities elevates these spaces into personal oases that would be at home in any boutique hotel. The elevations don’t end there; NARI leaders shared that homeowners are also paying attention to high-efficiency certifications and high-tech features.

These preferences suggest that sustainability is another growing trend, and NARI’s insights reflect that as well. Carmel residents are increasingly interested in eco-friendly upgrades, and not just the aesthetic variety. From energy-efficient appliances and water-saving fixtures to improved insulation and high-performance HVAC systems, going green is gaining traction.

Smart home upgrades go hand in hand with managing all of those sustainable installations.

Technology is playing a pivotal role in home renovations, and requests for smart thermostats and home automation systems are commonplace. Integrated home automation systems that control lighting, security, water and other home functions are gaining traction for their convenience and efficiency, both inside the home and out.

Carmel’s increasingly mild climate has spurred a trend of homeowners transforming their exterior spaces into extensions of their indoor living areas. Patio upgrades, outdoor kitchens and cozy fire pits are just the beginning. These aren’t just backyards; they are

outdoor living rooms that compete with the comfort and amenities found inside the home. Dining areas, conversation nooks and even TV installations make time outside comfortable and enjoyable.

As remote and work-from-home employment has become more common, it’s no surprise that Carmel residents want to spend more time outside. But those interior home offices are not being overlooked in the remodeling industry. NARI has seen more and more investment in functional and stylish workspaces to create the perfect environment for productivity - a trend that is expected to continue through 2025.

As a leading authority in home remodeling, NARI Central Indiana has witnessed firsthand the dynamic evolution of Carmel’s remodeling landscape. Homeowners are investing in their properties to create spaces that reflect their lifestyle and enhance their overall quality of life, and hiring industry-leading professionals to ensure that vision comes seamlessly to life.

Fields Market Garden is no average urban garden; it is a blossoming common space fostering community connection, both with one another and the earth.

Planted in 2019 on land donated by Old Town, the garden has flourished under the stewardship of urban farmer Kate Sexton. She is proud to have more than doubled the garden space since joining the nonprofit in 2023, and there’s still room to grow.

Beyond cultivating crops, Fields Market Garden is deeply rooted in the community. It provides employment opportunities for North End residents with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD), offering a chance to contribute to their

Flowering Concept

FIELDS MARKET GARDEN IS GROWING IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

neighborhood. The garden is a place for meaningful, accessible employment for those who may otherwise have none. “We encourage integrated engagement opportunities for our neighbors with ID/ DD,” Sexton says. “We usually have a mix of North End neighbors and outside community members for our volunteer times, workshops and events.”

There will be no shortage of those events this fall. Though temperatures will drop, Fields Market Garden will remain a hive of activity. The calendar is filled with workshops like seed-saving and dried flower crafting, as well as a seasonal Pumpkin Party and holiday ornament making. For those with a flair for the floral, a bouquet-making workshop

will teach you how to expertly arrange the garden’s array of flowers, like sunflowers and zinnias, into a stunning centerpiece. Premade bouquets are also available for purchase at Joe’s Butcher Shop, and just as lovely. Visitors to the garden can look forward to a bountiful harvest of fresh produce, including tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, beets, kale, broccoli and pumpkins.

The garden’s continued success would not be possible without the enthusiastic approval of Carmel residents. Sexton and her team have received very positive feedback as well as generous financial support. “We have received grants from Merchants Foundation Fund VII, The Rotary Club of Carmel, NRCS U.S.

Department of Agriculture, and IHCDA through their CreatINg Places program to fund the buildout of our operation space,” Sexton says.

Those funds, like the rest of the effort and energy at Fields Market Garden, will be put to good use. Up next: building a greenhouse. This project will extend the growing season and provide a new space for learning and gathering. “We are planning to build our greenhouse with the help of volunteers this fall,” Sexton says. “Once the structure is up, we will have a ribboncutting celebration for the space and may host another event in the winter to honor the greenhouse and the community effort in bringing it to life.”

Fields Market Garden is more than a place to grow food; it’s a place where people grow together. By combining agriculture with community engagement, the garden is cultivating a thriving ecosystem where individuals and the environment flourish.
