But there are still plenty of summer activities to explore and our Events Calendar will help guide you to the many events that are coming up in Carmel in August. There’s a new professional sports team in Indianapolis and the coach is a longtime member of the Carmel community. Ray Compton sat down with Juergen Summer and talked about the Indy Eleven professional soccer team. It’s a team you and your kids will want to get behind. There’s a backyard conservation program in Hamilton County that you might not be aware of that helps you improve your very own backyard. We have the ﬁrst of a regular feature in this month’s issue. Our own personal chef Lori Goldsby visits the Carmel Farmer’s Market and has fresh recipes for the summer, and John has info for all you amateur golfers. There is a Hamilton County Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament being held at two of the area’s premier courses that you might want to try your hand at. Hamilton County Men’s Amateur | John Cinnamon You might have bragging rights as the best golfer in your regular foursome. You might even be your local club champion. But are you the best amateur golfer in all of Hamilton County? That will be determined September 14th and 15th when 72 golfers tee it up at the 10th Annual Hamilton County Men’s Amateur. And it truly is a county championship. The number one rule of eligibility is that your home residence must be in Hamilton County. Tournament Chairman Alan Hinds likes to say, “No one from Crawfordsville is going to be our county champion.” Since its inception, the 36-hole event has been contested over the same two courses, Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel and Noblesville’s Purgatory Golf Club, with the ﬁrst and second rounds alternating each year. For 2013, the ﬁrst round will be at Prairie View. While Hinds says the tournament has a friendly, collegial atmosphere, he maintains that it’s “serious” fun. Entrants are required to be at least 21 years old and have a current USGA handicap index no higher than 9.9 (seniors age 55 and older can have a handicap as high as 14.) Being mindful of the golf widows left behind during this two-day men’s event, Hinds has seen to it that the prizes and tournament favors are things the whole family can appreciate. For instance, the first day of the tournament is referred to as “Chardonnay Saturday”, where each player gets a bottle of chilled wine as they turn in their first day scorecard. Coming home with a bottle of wine in hand goes over a little better than with a new box of Titleists. Other favors have included restaurant gift cards and miniature golf passes for the kids. The entry fee of $140 covers both days of golf with GPS cart, range balls, door prizes, flight prizes, and tournament favors. Hinds said, “If this wasn’t already a great tournament, it would still be a great golf coupon.” Past champions of the Hamilton County Amateur have come from Arcadia, Cicero, and Westfield, as well as Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville. In addition to crowning a county champion in both the regular and senior divisions, Hinds said an All-Tournament Team will be selected, made up of the top eight finishers in each division. “Hey, where else can a 68-year-old be proud of making his All-County team?”

CHS Class of 1983 Reunion Celebrates Good Times

Thirty years later, organizers want to celebrate those memories and are planning a class reunion to be held over Labor Day weekend. “We are using social media, word-of-mouth, local press and a post card mailing to invite the Class of ’83 to Saturday’s reunion dinner. However, the Friday evening events are open to anyone who attended Carmel High School,” said Tom Melangton. The party kicks off at the Carmel High School football stadium at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 30. “Sheri and I are

planning a pitch-in style tailgate to be held in the parking lot at the south end of the stadium,” said Mike Conner. “All CHS grads are welcome to stop by to ﬁre up for the big game against Trinity.” Organizers are looking forward to showcasing the Arts and Design District for those traveling from out of town. According to Keari Allen Troutman, a block party and bar crawl will welcome alums to Old Town. “All Carmel graduates are invited to participate in the bar crawl and block party at Muldoon’s but will need to purchase a $10 wristband to join in the fun,” said Troutman. “I sing with the Jennerators and our band will be providing live entertainment all evening.” The bar crawl also includes Woody’s Library, Detour, Old Town Tavern and Nippers. On Saturday night, the Class of 1983 will celebrate good times at the Renaissance Hotel with a reception, open mic for classmates to share stories, dinner,

dancing and entertainment. “We are spreading the word and hope to have a tremendous turnout for our thirty-year reunion,” said Melangton. “If anyone has any interesting news or achievements to share, please let us know.” Attendees are encouraged to dress in cocktail attire or in their favorite 80’s fashion. A block of rooms has been reserved at The Renaissance Hotel for those traveling from afar. Coach from Carmel Leads Indy’s Newest Pro-Sports Team | Ray Compton t probably would not have been a surprising inquiry if the coach in question had a ﬁrst name such as Frank or Chuck. Or, a last name like Vogel or Pagano. Or, was employed by a professional team called the Pacers or the Colts. After all, this is central Indiana and the natives have had longtime admiration for their locals in the National Basketball Association and National Football League.

But in this particular situation the fascination of a waiter in a downtown Carmel coffee shop did not center on the possibility of gazing at a coach in the NBA or NFL. His intrigue involved the once unheralded world of professional soccer. “Was that the coach of the Indy Eleven,” admiringly questioned the waiter. When informed it was indeed new Indy Eleven coach Juergen Sommer, the smiling waiter responded quickly, “I wish I could get season tickets.” That is exactly what Eleven owner Ersal Ozdemir and team president Peter Wilt hoped to hear after they selected the personable Sommer as the franchise’s first coach for the journey into the North American Soccer League in 2014. Ozdemir and Wilt nabbed one of the state’s top soccer landmarks when they chose the former Indiana University goalkeeper and longtime coach in the Carmel United Soccer Club. “We made as a commitment to hire a local coach who would connect to the people of Indiana,” said Wilt, a tireless soccer pioneer who previously constructed the Chicago Fire into a major success story in Major League Soccer (MLS) and has adopted a similar blueprint for the Eleven in Indiana. “In Juergen, we have a coach who is locally connected and in no way compromises the values or goals to build a team soccer fans in Indiana will be proud to call their own.” Already, the Eleven has scored big at the box office. The team has captured deposits for almost 5,000 season tickets to date and it has garnered an enthusiastic fan group called the Brickyard Battalion. The Battalion has over 1,000 members and regularly partners with Wilt’s front office to hold soccer viewing parties around the Indianapolis area. It is grassroots marketing at its best. Sommer, 44, may be new to the Eleven mix, but he has been a torchbearer for soccer since his high school days at Culver Military Academy in northern Indiana. It was at Culver where Sommer, born in New York but with German and Danish background, polished the goalkeeping skills that he originally learned from his father Willi, once a goalkeeper in Germany. “My first year at Culver was difficult,” admitted 16

Sommer, who left his parents and the family delicatessen business in Naples, Fl. “It wasn’t the Marines, but it is geared toward leadership and it took a while to get used to that life. But I enjoyed it.” If soccer were to be his ticket for college, Sommer found a bumpy ride. Indiana high school soccer was not on speed dial for most college recruiters. After pursuing future collegiate homes, Sommer had it down to one viable possibility. It was Brown. “I was scrambling,” he conceded. But then an idea came. Sommer remembered as a youth watching legendary Indiana coach Jerry Yeagley and his Hoosiers win an NCAA championship in Florida. He contacted Yeagley and received an invitation to walkon at Indiana. “Once you get in the door, everyone starts over,” remembered Sommer.

for eight years in the English Premier League, becoming the first American goalkeeper to play in the storied league that will have its game televised on NBC Sports this fall. Sommer played five years in the WLS for the Columbus Crew and New England Revolution before a myriad of injuries ended his playing days in 2002. After a tour as an assistant at Indiana, Sommer was called upon by school athletic surgeon John McCarroll to coach the Cosmos in the Carmel United league. It turned into a perfect partnership for the Cosmos and Sommer, who doubled as a realtor in

And, quickly, good fortune and great skills elevated Sommer in Bloomington. After starting off as the fifth goalkeeper for the rebuilding Hoosiers, the 6-foot5 freshman edged past his peers and became the Indiana starter in the third game of the season. Sommer never returned to backup status. Instead he etched his name into the Indiana soccer record books. Sommer tallied 57 victories, the third most in the storied program’s history. He also helped steer the Hoosiers to their third NCAA championship in 1988 and another Final Four appearance before ending his collegiate career by being named Soccer America’s Goalkeeper on the Year as a senior in 1990. “Juergen has overachieved at every level and has wonderful tactical awareness of the game,” Yeagley said. “He is extremely good at building personal relationships. As the coach of a new professional team, you need someone who can pull everything together and create the chemistry needed to make your club a championship caliber program. Juergen is the ideal choice to do that.” And leaving Indiana, Sommer was a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team, eventually being selected as an alternate for the 1990 FIFA World Cup squad. Meanwhile, Wilt learned a lot about Sommer when he visited Indianapolis last fall as he pursued putting a professional franchise in the Hoosier state. “I knew Juergen as a fan of the U.S. National Team and when he played against the Fire in Columbus and New England,” said Wilt, “but I didn’t meet him until I began meeting with members of Indiana’s soccer community to assess the viability of pro soccer here. It was clear from our first meeting that he

Sommer speaks glowingly of Wilt and Ozdemir, whose firm Keystone Construction is firmly in the ground in Carmel’s growing downtown sector. “They want it done right and that has impressed both the fans and me,” Sommer said. “If they did not want to do it right, I would not have gotten involved. But if the ownership and management are committed, it trickles down through a team.”

Sommer realizes a key for any coach in any sport is winning and uncovering talented players to accomplish that objective. He is tapping into every source he can use to find players for the inaugural Eleven season. “The rubber is hitting the road now,” he noted. “With the West Coach factor and players coming from places in Europe, Mexico and Argentina, it is not a 9 to 5 job. You are talking to every coach and soccer executive that you can.” Meanwhile, Sommer and his wife, Susie, are active parents in the Carmel youth sports community. Sons Tommy and Noah are budding athletes in soccer, baseball and swimming. And Sommer says he would like to be a father of sorts when it comes to professional soccer in Indiana. “All of us with the organization want to create an atmosphere that will make soccer a new sports experience for the fans,” Sommer said. “Our stadium (Michael A. Carroll Stadium at IUPUI) seats 13,500 and we want to fill every seat for every game.”

Every spring I look forward to the return of the Farmer’s Market. As excited as I am for that ﬁrst Saturday, nothing beats that summer Saturday when the market is in full swing and there are corn and peaches available! While my spring menus revolve around the tender shoots of asparagus and fresh green herbs, I know summer is about cool and refreshing dishes that are best served al fresco on the deck with friends! While your best canine friend can’t join you at the Carmel Farmer’s Market, you can pick up a nice treat for him at the Becker Farms Cattle stand. Along with some tasty treats for your grill, you can buy a smoked beef bone for $3 and buy a little forgiveness…. There are vendors selling beef, lamb, chicken, goat and beefalo at the market this year. Check out a new vendor this year, the Fassnacht Family Farms from Delphi, Indiana. They are selling a bison cross bred with a cow (beefalo) that is lean and delicious. At the Grabow Orchard stand, you can pick up some apple wood chips for your grill. The combination is really something special! There are many wonderful desserts for sale at the market. To me, the most “worth-it calorie splurge” is the hand held deep fried pies from the Amish

Kuntryside Bakery stand. I almost feel guilty eating it as I pass the De/Tox Me stand. Of course any do-it-yourself baker can make a wonderful cobbler or pie with the fruit available, but I know I’m going to use the peaches in the main dish for an unexpected twist…so I’m looking for something different for dessert. At Preservation, Melanie Miles sells her homemade jams and jellies. Earlier in the season I grabbed a jar of her hibiscus jelly which I’ve been slathering on grilled chicken breasts. When I tell her how I’ve been using it, Melanie says, “It’s not just for toast anymore!” But I’m thinking of toast and a riff on Bananas Foster by using her banana butter spread on some grilled pound cake with a caramel sauce drizzle and toasted cashews. That caramel sauce recipe is on my blog lorigoldsbycatering.weebly.com The peaches are in! I almost give the kid from Pete’s Peaches a hug, they smell as sweet as they look! I’m very excited to try them grilled with a side of bloomy rind cheese available at Caprini Creamery. Kristy Kikly tells me that the Chevre base molds the cheese similar to brie. I pick up some greens and then make my way to My Dad’s Corn. We always stop here last because I don’t want to carry it around with me while I shop. Shopping at the farmer’s markets not only supports the local economy, but it allows you to interact with those who produce the food we consume! Truly this is the idea of “farm to fork”… Many of these farmers are artisans and craftsmen who are trying to create sustainable products for us; I hope you get the chance to enjoy nature’s bounty this summer with friends and family!

Grilled Peach Ranch Salad

- 4 peaches - 1 large Vidalia onion - 4 chicken breasts - 4 oz. Chevre - ¼ c. @ of mayo, sour cream and real buttermilk - 2 T. @ of mint, parsley and chives - 1 t. apple cider vinegar - salt & pepper - 4 pcs. applewood bacon-thick - ¼ c. brown sugar - 1 t. sambal oelek (thai chili paste) - Baby Kale & spring greens or your favorite lettuce mix

 Prep the bacon. In a microwave, cook bacon until almost crispy (4-5 minutes). Mix sambal oelek and brown sugar to form a paste. Dip bacon in and rub oﬀ excess. Line a pan with foil and bake at 400 for 4 minutes, turn and bake for another 5 minutes.  Mix together herb mixture, apple cider vinegar and mayo, sour cream and buttermilk for the dressing. Refrigerate until ready to use.  Grill chicken breasts. (I like to use hibiscus jelly or BBQ sauce at the end of cooking to add ﬂavor)  Slice Vidalia onion into ½” slabs, slice peaches in half and remove seed, then slice in half again through the thickness (not quarters!) Brush onion slabs and peach halves with a neutral oil and grill. You want to see grill marks on the peaches.  Arrange chicken, peaches and onions on top of the lettuces. Sprinkle the bacon and Chevre cheese and drizzle dressing on top.

- 4 ears of fresh corn - 2 cucumbers - 1 “overripe” red pepper - ½ of a small onion or 2 green onions - 1 bunch of fresh dill - ½ t. celery salt - 4 oz. greek yogurt (2%) - 4 oz. buttermilk (Real!) - fresh cracked pepper

 Remove husks and silks from the corn. With a knife, slice the raw kernels oﬀ the cob. Turn the blade around and using the back of the knife, “milk” the corn cob. You will see the corn milk release.  Peel (if desired) and halve the cucumber lengthwise. Using the back of a spoon, scoop out the seeds and discard. Dice the remaining cucumber.  Dice the red pepper. Finely dice the onion.  Mince the fresh dill to make 2 T. (If substituting dried dill, use 2 t.)  Mix together buttermilk and greek yogurt. Add celery salt and pepper to taste.  Add veggies to dressing, stir to combine. Chill. Flavors just keep getting better on this one!

Barcelona and Rome, and plan to visit Thailand in the near future. “In each book, a child greets Molly and Michael and serves as a tour guide. We wanted to focus on the places and sites that would be fun for children, not just museums and historical places,” said Amy. As co-owners of COLOR Design and Marketing, the Olers make working with one’s spouse look easy. Chris is the president and lead writer, and Amy is the creative director. “We’re used to working as a team in our business, so our book projects really do go pretty smoothly,” said Amy. Both are quick to say their areas of expertise complement each other’s. “I like the research and the writing, and I hate to draw,” said Chris. “And, I’m not a writer, and I love to draw,” added Amy. After the initial three picture books, Amy hopes to draw two each year while Chris plans to grow the characters into chapter books for older children. “We received feedback from second- and third-graders who might want to move on from picture books,” said Amy. Chris looks forward to writing lengthier books about the characters, possibly moving into the mystery genre. Chris, a former teacher at the International School of Indiana, begins his research based on conversations with friends and former

colleagues. “I have contacts in Barcelona, and for the Rome book, Amy had a friend who grew up there,” said Chris. John “Two Gun” Brunson, a Carmel legend

From the archives of the Carmel Clay Historical Society Remember “Two Gun”? This colorful local character whose real name was John Brunson was well known to everyone in Carmel. He lived in Home Place and collected trash in the area. Despite his dirty appearance, legend has it, that he had a lot of money and buried it in his backyard. Dennis Burnett recalls “Two Gun was a Carmel icon. As a little kid he was scary. But everyone knew him and he knew everybody.”

Craig Hutton says “he bought bikes for children who couldn’t afford them and helped pay tuitions to college to some kids in Carmel.” Robert Thornberry remembers, “Two gun would buy my brother, Tom, ice cream at the pharmacy when we were little.”
