Each of us has a place that we go for a peace of mind. For some of us, it may be a far away place that we dream of at night. For others, it may be a place close to home. For one Carmel resident, her place of serenity is right outside her doorstep in the harmony of flowers, birds, trees and fountains.

WELCOME TO THE GARDEN OF SERENITY OF LILLIE GOLAY. Lillie and her husband, Dave, enjoy the peace and quiet of working in their bounteous garden that surrounds their home in Village Of West Clay. According to Lillie, “Flowers always make people feel better. “ She adds, “I could never live where there aren’t flowers, as they are a symbol of life.” With more than 100 species of plants, she delights in nurturing hostas, daisies, hydrangeas, sunflowers, hibiscus, mandevilla and cornflowers, along with her private grape vines. The perennials are scattered throughout the flowerbeds, and annuals are confined to the pots. Which is better— perennials or annuals? Both have their uses in the garden. Annuals are great for places where you want a lot of flowers, but they generally need more watering, fertilizing and other care than perennials. Planting them every year can be a chore, too. Perennials have a steady structure and form to a garden. Many gardeners delight in the anticipation of waiting for their favorites’ bloom time. Along with the flora, her gardens are filled with fountains and a dry bed stream. At every turn on her slate walkway, another glimpse of beauty abounds. Living among the flowers are a wide array of birds, ranging from hummingbirds to goldfinches to chickadees to purple headed finches to doves to cardinals to red headed woodpeckers, which the Golays enjoy feeding every day. The birds, in turn, propagate the various types of flowers, especially the sunflowers that dot her pathways.

Lillie Golay’s garden, complete with fountains and birds.

As a young girl, Lillie watched her mother tend to her own gardens and enjoy working in nature. It was a hobby that Lillie passed down to her own daughters years later and together they enjoy sharing their gardening adventures and triumphs. She even hosted a tour to the Zionsville Ladies Garden Club recently.

“My favorite thing to do in the morning is take a cup of coffee and stroll the garden,” Golay says. “Watering here and there in spite of the underground irrigation system, I find it relaxing to give them my own bit of water.” Lillie admits that her soil is poor for growing plants, as it is mostly mud and clay. Most gardeners agree that success is in the soil. Good soil — not too sandy, not

atCarmel.com / OCTOBER 2014 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 9

Carmel_10-14.indd 9

9/24/14 1:08 PM

too sticky, with enough organic matter to make it drain well and be inviting to plant roots — is essential for successful flower gardening, just as it is for vegetables. Lillie finds it necessary to add potting soil before planting her precious seedlings to give them the proper nutrients.

“I am looking forward to taking the Master Gardening Class offered by Purdue University this month,” she says. “I know that I can learn more about soil enrichment and look forward to learning even more about plants.” To learn more about the Master Gardening Class, visit hort.purdue.edu/mg.

Pause for a moment to find your own place of serenity. Whether near or far, take the time to nurture your place of peace and rejuvenation. Sometimes it takes effort to enrich the soil and to water our dreams in life. But in the end, fruits of our lives will be much richer and rewarding.

“Mat and his crew did a great job. We replaced all windows and a slider, and everything went very smoothly. Even the small hiccups were handled professionally and efficiently. Mat was very honest and straight forward, and we appreciated this greatly. I would recommend to anyone.” -Daniel M., Noblesville

Stark Family

DOUG STARK’S 40 YEARS OF BEEF & BOARDS Writer / Ray Compton Photography / JJ Kaplan

Have you ever thought about how many dining and entertainment options have vanished in the last 40 years in central Indiana? Gone are entertainment hotspots such as Market Square Arena in downtown Indianapolis, the Patio in Broad Ripple and Starlight Musicals at Butler University. Lost in time are dining stops such as Victoria Station on Keystone Avenue, King Cole in downtown Indianapolis, The Glass Chimney and the Stable Inn on 86th Street. Certainly, history has knocked out many of our once-upon-a-time favorite stops in the last 40 years. Habits changed. Places aged. But, perhaps surprisingly, there is one place that just keeps rolling along

on the northwest corner of Indianapolis and just a few miles south of Zionsville. Take an encore, Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, a business still serving a full menu of both entertainment and food for 41 seasons after opening in 1973. It has become an Indiana monument in College Park. The author of this long-running success story is Zionsville resident Doug Stark, who started his dinner theatre career with Ball State friend Robert Zehr in 1977. That was when the Indiana duo opened up a Beef and Boards near Louisville, Ky. Stark remembers two specific challenges he and Zehr faced.

12 / CARMEL COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / OCTOBER 2014 / atCarmel.com

Carmel_10-14.indd 12

9/24/14 1:09 PM

“We were in a dry county and we were located a long distance from Louisville,” Stark remembered. “That was when we were having a gasoline crisis. The market just wasn’t right. But we learned what people liked and what people didn’t like. It was a learning experience for both of us.” Three years later in 1980, the corporate office of Beef & Boards was looking for new operators in Indianapolis. Stark and Zehr raised their hands and took over the local shop. Eventually, Zehr, who owns Oak Hill Mansion in Carmel, sold his ownership share to Stark in 1998. “We’re still very good friends,” said Stark. “Bob was just ready to move on.” And the former Fort Wayne native who polished his theatre skills was ready to jump on the ride as a solo pilot. He has scripted a remarkable tale of success. Beef & Boards has consistently attracted about 150,000 visitors annually to his performances. That tally grows to more than five million customers since 1980.

Fiddler 1999

Public relations director Patricia Rettig targets the affable Stark as the driving force in the successful run. “Simply put, he knows what he’s doing,” said the former Ohio newspaper editor who joined the theatre in 2006. “He knows his audience and he cares deeply that their experience at Beef & Boards is enjoyable from start to finish. He is directly involved in every aspect of the theatre – from the business, to the creative and performance sides. Beef & Boards’ success absolutely starts at the top.” Stark learned the craft and the juggling of certain aspects of theatres during his tenure at the Hilberry Theatre in Detroit after a brief hitch as a teacher. “We were performance oriented,” he remembered. “We would have three different shows, three different plays going on at the same time. It was training by being under fire, but it was a terrific experience.” Geographically, Stark has stayed on the north side of Indianapolis, just a few stoplights from his theatre. He alternated between Zionsville and Carmel before recently returning to Zionsville. Stark has integrated two families into the theatre. The first is his blood family. His three children have been involved in acting, stage managing, house managing and serving as a director (daughter Elizabeth directed Oklahoma). Former wife Suzanne remains a stage partner, annually acting in one or two performances. “It is wonderful seeing my children being so successful,” said Stark. “They are carrying their own weight.” He is also a big fan of his other employees.

“One of the reasons why I continue to love what I do is how great the staff is,” Stark said. “A lot of them have hit their 25th or 30th anniversary with the theatre. They have become part of our family.” Rettig agrees on the family assessment.

“There’s no place like Beef & Boards,” she admiringly stated. “It’s fun. It’s friendly. It’s family. Not only is it a family-run business, but it’s incredibly family-oriented. We care about the people who come through our doors and we care about each other. The Starks are directly involved. They know their employees’ spouses and children.

Customized investment portfolios that perform.

They care about them. How could you not love working in a place like this?” And Stark, who turned 65, is not planning on bailing out soon. “I get mail from the AARP and Social Security,” he admitted. “But I am not ready to quit. When you get older, some things may take a little longer to get done. I can’t perform in as many shows that I used to do, but I love this business. It is truly rewarding seeing people have a good time night in and night out. We are not trying to change the world. We want people to have a nice dinner and be entertained.” Beef & Boards is Indiana’s only yeararound Equity dinner theatre and only one of seven Equity dinner theatres in the country. The theatre employs both Equity (union professionals) and non-Equity performers. Actors are discovered locally and in auditions in Chicago and New York. A new cast is selected for each show and Beef & Boards provides travel and living accommodations for out-of-town actors.

Casting director, producer, performer and director Eddie Curry will be dispatched soon to New York City to audition more than 500 actors for the 2015 season. “Being an Equity theatre has afforded us the opportunity to work with only the best actors, singers and stage managers,” Curry said. “We feel that has helped us ensure quality entertainment for our audiences.”

The Odd Couple 2001

Stark understands that quality is the bottom line of any business. “That is one reason why we are constantly upgrading the building,” noted Stark, who has implemented improvements on the theatre’s façade and carpeting. “And why we work on bringing in the shows that people want to see.” The owner also keeps in touch with his counterparts at Civic Theatre (Carmel) and Indiana Repertory Theatre (downtown Indianapolis). “Indiana has an interesting theater market,” he said. “I think our audiences are different. We each have our own niche.” And with Stark, family and employees at the front of the stage, you can expect audiences to keep rolling in at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre.

Fast and friendly emergency care. Why do some people choose St.Vincent Carmel over other ER’s? Maybe it’s because we not only have average wait times of less than 20 minutes, but we also offer some of the area’s friendliest and most compassionate care. Which explains why we’ve been named an Emergency Center of Excellence—the only one in central Indiana—multiple times. The next time you experience a health emergency, think fast. And choose St.Vincent Carmel for care that’s been repeatedly recognized as one of the best in the nation. For current Er wait times, text CArE to 41411.

FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE Writer / Devon Dean

Becoming a crime statistic is one of the worst feelings imaginable. It’s like a quick punch to the gut that leaves a nasty, empty feeling behind. I’ve been there. You may have too. The morning I realized my car had been stolen, I felt unlucky and possibly cursed (the same car had been burglarized a couple months prior). At the time, I told myself I needed to take more precautions to ensure my personal safety. Fast-forward more than a decade. On the way to work several weeks ago, I saw the aftermath of a shooting at the edge of my usually quiet subdivision. It was enough to refuel my desire to be proactive. I took part in a Women’s Self Defense Seminar hosted by Fishers-based Krav Maga Indy. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, we crowded inside a hot martial arts studio to learn the basics of self-defense.

Aged 18 to retirement, we took turns hammering our fists into boxing pads and pushing our partners off of us. Some of us giggled during sparring, feeling slightly embarrassed and hoping this will ready us in case the occasion should arise. “We love the groin,” Instructor Jeff Fredericksen tells us. “It solves a lot of problems.” The women around me share looks of bewilderment and surprise. “The eyes are another point to aim for when all else fails,” he continues, putting his hand over his sparring partner’s face. He goes on to demonstrate how to effectively strike those areas of the body in a myriad of situations. Fredericksen is an expert—he’s the Head Instructor at the state’s only official Krav Maga Worldwide training center. Fredericksen opened the center in 2008 and has trained law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels. Krav Maga originated in Israel in the late 1940s/early 1950s as a means of military

training in a short span of time. It was brought to the U.S. in 1981. Fredericksen offered the class several key takeaways, rooted in common sense: 1. Awareness: People often fall prey to criminals simply because they’re not

paying attention. Fredericksen says always be looking around, especially when you’re alone in a public place like a mall parking lot. 2. Body Language: Stand tall, walk with purpose, and look confident. The less fear you show in your face and body, the less likely you are to become a target.

ITS NOT TOO LATE TO START YOUR DREAM BACKYARD PROJECT. ENJOY THIS FALL WEATHER IN THE COMFORT OF YOUR NEW OUTDOOR FIREPLACE.

3. Have An Escape Route: Know where the exits are and how fast you can get to them in your home, school, or office. 4. Tell the Story: Fredericken says if you do end up in a hostile situation, tell the story. He likened it to bathing a cat. “When you try to put your cat in the tub, it becomes very vocal,” he laughs, but he has a point. Yelling and describing what’s happening to you can be the difference between life or death. The overarching theme is simple: “Get home alive.” Krav Maga Indy will be having another, more comprehensive self-defense seminar on October 11.

WALK FOR WOMEN’S LUNG HEALTH AWARENESS Writer / Kara Reibel

On Oct. 18, the American Lung Association is holding an inaugural LUNG FORCE walk to raise awareness for women’s lung health with a focus on lung cancer. “LUNG FORCE is a new initiative to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, to drive policy change and to increase research funding,” says Sheena Lee, Special Events Manager for the American Lung Association in Indiana. Lung cancer is the most deadly form of cancer for women, and prevention is a major part of the cure, but not always. In Carrie Aloisio’s case, she acquired a rare form of lung cancer without ever lifting a cigarette to her mouth, with zero family history, and without being consciously exposed to secondhand smoke or any other known factors. “It began with a cough,” she says. “The cough progressed, and before I knew it, I was having surgery to remove the majority of my right lung.” Her final diagnosis came only after surgery: mucoepidermoid carcinoma. She was 38 years old at the time. Luckily her form of lung cancer is rare, occurring in less than 0.1 percent of all cases and does not require chemotherapy or radiation. The surgery to remove her lung occurred in May of 2013, and as soon as she could, she went back to what she loved: running. She was a runner before the diagnosis, having just started running halfmarathons like the Geist Half. Of course, after surgery, and with TOWNEPOST MEDIA NETWORK / OCTOBER 2014 / TownePost.com

adapting to having only one lung, she was learning to walk again and slowly building up her strength. Aloisio was able to run her first half-marathon 11 months later, which occurred in April of this year. “I wanted to finish a race before the one-year mark of my operation,” states Aloisio. “That was my goal and I did it!”

picked the wrong diva! My one lung and I are doing just fine, because you CAN say “cancer” and “cure” in the same sentence.

Aloisio created the shirt she wore in her first half-marathon post-surgery: Lung cancer

Well said.

Diane Tetrick came from a family of smokers. Of course they smoked, with a family legacy of tobacco farmers from Kentucky. However, she has never taken a puff, but she had been exposed to secondhand smoke. Her dad died after losing a horrible battle with lung cancer. Tetrick’s sister, Barbara, died on the operating table because of lung cancer; she had been a smoker. Tetrick, now 63 years old, has been in remission for the last two years. The first symptom for Tetrick was also a cough—a nagging one that wouldn’t go away. Having a sister who had just died from lung cancer, she insisted on a CT scan. Two spots were discovered, so portions of each lung were removed, with her family by her side. Marvin, Tetrick’s husband who is retired from GM, and their kids, were there with her throughout the process. Their son, Marty, an Army warrant officer, and their daughter, Mindy, a teacher at Center Grove, are a source of pride and resilience for their parents. A spiritual woman with a strong faith and married 46 years to her high school sweetheart, Tetrick is tough and takes it as it comes—with optimism. And even though she found out that another surgery is required, she is ready. She has staying power and possesses all the signs of a positive outcome. These are only a couple examples of survivor stories. There are plenty of others who are running their own race of sorts. Tetrick has a “team” walking with her at LUNG FORCE. Aloisio does, too. For all runners and walkers, the goal is to cross the finish line. Aloisio wished to recapture that experience. She also wanted to prove to herself that she was capable of doing it with only one lung. You don’t have to

Carmel’s Model Business for 35 Years

s you enter the corporate offices of the Helen Wells Agency in Carmel, your ego suddenly starts shrinking when you notice the dozens of pictures of male and female models covering the walls that are gushing with beauty, overflowing with suaveness and sparkling with elegance. Admittedly, you have never claimed to be a twin brother to George Clooney or a looka-like older uncle to Brad Pitt. But, my, this is a tough confrontation for your self-esteem as it shriveled up when you walked through the front door. Suddenly, you feel as if your tummy is dripping with extra pounds from yesterday’s attack on double stuffed Oreos. You are reminded that your teeth should be whitened; your acne scars scream for attention; and you now clearly understand what Jack Trudeau is saying on his new hair commercial. (You think that maybe a toupee wouldn’t be a bad idea after all.)

in Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love and not all of the males are GQ cover boys-tobe. In fact, the 700 models and actors who were hired by the agency in 2013 were young and old; beautiful and plain; tall and tiny; and slender and a little lumpy.

Indeed, once you view these close-up pictures of the hundreds of models and actors who have walked through the Helen Wells Agency offices in West Clay, you are strapped to wonder what happened to your gene pool when it comes to comparing your pitiful self to these beautiful people who are staring back at your lackluster self. Is everyone a clone of Tom Brady or Scarlett Johansson?

“In modeling, there is a place for everyone in today’s world,” Wells said. “A few years ago, you looked for a certain type of person. But not today. We live in a very diverse world, and our partners are looking for all types of models.”

Your body-slammed ego whispers: Where are the comforting pictures of Igor from Young Frankenstein fame, Jaws of James Bond glory or the Dude of Big Lebowski stature? Does anyone else around here have a hair dangling out of his nose or lumpy abs?

Things have changed dramatically for the agency since it was started almost 35 years ago in Wells’ home in Indianapolis. After graduating from Indiana University and being a stay at home mother of five children, Wells took a nursing position at St. Vincent Hospital. But she was eventually attracted to Act One, a forerunner of her future talent and modeling endeavor.

Okay, let’s back up a step or two and note that Helen Wells, her daughter Nancy and their office cohorts have been one of the country’s top talent and modeling agencies since 1980 because they have unearthed all kinds of models, actors and faces. Not all of the females were the leggy backup dancers

“I loved the pace,” she remembered. “It was fun.”

Ayres, Hoosier Lottery, McDonald’s and Von Maur have tapped the catalogs of models and actors from Helen Wells. And a few years ago, a front office executive of the Colts sought Wells for advice on finding talent for the Colts cheerleaders.

“You look for new needs,” Nancy said. “Clients are interested in new talent.” Crucial needs today include Hispanic, Asian-American and African-American models. “We think of models being blond and blueeyed,” Wells said. “But that is not the case

at all. Our clients want to have diversity in their models.” And diversity stretches into all quarters. For example, one of the most popular models at the agency is 95-year-old J. B. Bowen. There are always needs for young children and families of all ages. Sometimes there is space for someone with a few extra pounds, expanding gray hairs or quirky physical traits.

There is a growing requirement for male models: height. “The girls are getting so tall,” Nancy said. “Some of our girls are almost six-foot tall. We have a need for taller guys sometimes.” Perhaps the most difficult episode of this Hollywood scene in Carmel is the time when the model or aspiring actor has to be told that his or her talents did not fit a client’s description. “The hardest thing to do is tell someone that they missed,” Wells said. “If they miss too often, they quit. Everyone wants to be a model, but it is hard to be turned down.” Most use modeling and actors as parttime employment. If modeling or acting fails, many return to their other world – everyday life. The field of talent at the agency comes from all corners of Indiana employment. Jobs behind the people can be attorneys, doctors, UPS drivers, policemen, farmers, construction workers, cheerleaders and tattoo artists. One current model drives an 18-wheel, semi-truck. “And she’s very pretty,” said Wells. Of course, the visitor thought. Of course.

efore entering the offices of athletic director Jim Inskeep, let’s take a quick assessment of his world at Carmel High School. Yes, THE Carmel High School.

THINK ABOUT THESE IMPRESSIVE FACTS:

• Did you know that Carmel is Indiana’s biggest high school in regards to student

enrollment? There are 4,650 students at the campus appropriately located on Main Street. Butler, a nationally recognized university, has 4,034 undergraduate students in 2014. Carmel is one big institution. • Did you realize that Carmel High school has expanded to 21 athletic programs – 10 boy’s and 11 girl’s teams? Butler, a member of the Big East Conference, has 15 athletic programs this year.

• Or did you know that Carmel has won more 100 state championships in its storied history, including titles in boy’s and girl’s cross country, boys and girl’s tennis, football, lacrosse, boy’s and girl’s basketball and men’s volleyball? Butler has yet to win a national championship. Now, to be honest, no one, especially the mild-mannered Inskeep, is trying to hang all of the successes on the current athletic

He has followed in the footsteps of several quality athletic directors, yet has created his own parallel path through his organizational skills, his vision and his determination to succeed.” The name Inskeep has been a part of Carmel athletics dating back to 1971. That was when father Roland took over as athletic director at Carmel and began a noteworthy 23-year run. It was the elder Inskeep who helped herd his peers in Indiana into modern day thinking in regards to organizing and running high school athletic programs.

There seem to be endless basketball courts on the campus. Inskeep understands the desires of his constituents. “They want to set the highest goals possible,” said the 40-year-old athletic director, whose sons Conner, Carter and Cooper participate in middle school and elementary athletic programs. The school has more than one million square feet in its facilities. While districts such as Lawrence Township (North and Central) and Hamilton Southeastern (Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern) splintered into two high schools, Carmel educators chose the one big school scenario.

It takes a dynamic communicator to balance and work all of those groups. Jimmy does it extremely well.”

For Inskeep, he has two secrets for success. “You have to be a good listener,” he assessed. “And you have to realize that being a high school athletic director is a lifestyle. You do a little of everything.” Or in his case a lot of great things.

The success on and off the competition field has also led Inskeep to become a stalwart among his ranks. “Jim is a great communicator,” noted Lawrence North athletic director Grant

10 INSIGHTS FROM CARMEL ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JIM INSKEEP 1. Do you get nervous when your team has big games or is playing for a state championship? “I get nervous every time. If I am driving to Fort Wayne or to Lucas Oil Stadium, I am nervous. It is a long day of anticipation.” 2. Who is the best male athlete you have had at Carmel during your tenure? “Probably Marcus Newton. He was a tremendous package of speed and strength.” 3. What about on the female side? “That one is really hard because there have been a lot of great athletes. But we have Amy Bilquist now on our girls swimming team. She has the potential to be in the Olympics.” 4. What fears do you have for high school sports? “What worries me the most is the trend of pay for play. Kids may choose to play in one

sport instead of two sports. It may exclude kids from participating in sports.” 5. Any other concerns? “Kids and families need to have time together. I worry that family time is at the soccer field or other playing fields.”

8. Do you use Twitter? “I do. I have over 5,000 followers. It is a great way to get our message out and I think there is more interest in our teams.” 9. What was your top moment as athletic director? “Probably when we won the 2012 boys basketball state championship. It was very special after what the program had been through.”

6. During a state playoff game last year, you had an official suffer a heart attack and the father of one of your players did not survive a heart ailment. What was that experience like? “It was just surreal. It was like a reality show. 10. Were there other memorable moments? But we had our emergency plans in place and “I will always remember our 2008 boys soccer team. We were highly rated and we lost in a we did everything possible.” shootout in the regional to Brebeuf. L-R: Kevin Kirkpatrick,Co-Founder of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services IN Realty Craig West, President of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Holly Martin, President of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services IN Realty John Dick, Co-Founder of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services IN Realty

Prudential Indiana Realty Group, a local force in real estate brokerage here since 1981, will become Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty this October. For nearly 35 years, Kevin Kirkpatrick and John Dick have led their real estate company with distinction, building it from a storefront enterprise in central Indianapolis in 1981 into an Indiana powerhouse with a wellearned reputation for excellence. On October 7 of this year, in a regional rollout bringing new energy and new signage to 18 offices and hundreds of yard signs, the company embarks on its next exciting phase of growth as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty. “Affiliating with Berkshire Hathaway with the full strength of Warren Buffet behind us is one more step in our proven commitment to innovation and quality service,” Kirkpatrick said. Craig West, President of the Affiliate Division, said the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brand will resonate well with clients in all market segments and with real estate sales professionals. “Our real estate network is one of the few organizations entrusted to use the Berkshire Hathaway name,” he explained. “We believe sales professionals will be proud to represent this world renowned brand, which was named the Real Estate Agency Brand of the Year recently by Harris Poll EquiTrend.” Stephen Phillips, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices president, welcomed Kirkpatrick and his company to the brand. “We are honored to add Indiana Realty to our network ranks,” Phillips said. “Kevin is a highly respected broker who holds industry leadership roles at the local, state and national level. Indiana Realty is one of the industry’s top companies and is a generous corporate citizen with strong support for local and national charities.”

Consumers will be able to search for properties nationwide from the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices website (BerkshireHathawayHS. com) and can even provide lender grade property valuations by showing off market data like Sold and Pending information when they sign up for Inside Access, giving them far more information than available elsewhere. The information available includes not only off market data, but consumers can also research details including commute times with the INRIX Drive Time plus Walk Scores to show proximity to parks, schools, restaurants, etc. for any property, giving them a far better feel for their ideal property. BHHS Indiana Realty is a full-service agency with a 30-year reputation as a premier Indiana company. “Our dedicated agents,” Kirkpatrick said, “most of whom can boast multiple years of market experience, are doing in excess of 5,600 transactions a year, and what really sets us apart, is our seamless and customized service in all segments of the market.” Especially well known for expertise in the high-end market, the company has become the leader for relocation expertise in the state as well as for the ancillary services offered. “Just as important,” Holly Martin, President of Indy Metro Division, said, “I think we’re recognized as a caring part of the community. We have proven leaders in all of our offices with numerous marketing partners and agents that have been recognized as Realtor of the Year for their service to both our industry and our communities, as well as President of the State Association of Realtors.” Consumers can look to BHHS Indiana Realty for continued top tier expertise and service for all their real estate needs, and with the backing of Berkshire Hathaway and its $200 billion in net worth, they will know the latest tools and technology will always be there to support their agents’ success in providing that excellent service. “When people are making the decision of the magnitude of buying a house, it’s the biggest decision a great many families will ever make,” according to Warren Buffett. “I would want to be associated with somebody where the financial strength was unquestioned and where the name stood for integrity.” Look for the new Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty signs in neighborhoods all across Indiana soon.

DICK WOLFSIE RELEASES NEW BOOK

THE RIGHT FLUFF Writer / Janet C. Striebel

Dick Wolfsie, the jocular word-slinging wizard, has just released his 13th book titled, The Right Fluff: Weightless Observations About Life on Earth. In this volume of lighthearted compilations you will understand how Wolfsie received permission from his wife to join a strip club, why he has only round numbers in his checkbook, why he is listed as female with Medicare, how he stole another man’s underwear, and how he got caught pandiculating in public. “I love finding things in life that are annoying to other people but strike me as funny,” says Wolfsie who has written more than 700 humor columns within the last 15 years. “I’m always delighted when I meet people who tell me that they have read one of my columns, clipped it out from the paper and put it on their fridge because they could identify with my entertaining reasoning.” Wolfsie has had a distinguished and varied media career in Indiana. His syndicated column is published in 40 newspapers and also appears twice weekly on WFYI Radio. If you haven’t read his work or heard him on radio, then you have most likely seen him on WISH-TV where he has served as a feature reporter for 25 years. His personal stories and video essays have been syndicated nationally. Although he was a former high school and college English teacher, he eventually shared his unique brand of humor across media platforms including more than 10,000 hours of television. His contributions have earned him many honors including a regional Emmy for best host, national ACE Award, and Casper Award for five years as host/producer of AM Indiana. Wolfsie lives in Geist with his wife, Mary Ellen, and their beagle, Toby. His other popular books include Mopey Dick: Deep Thoughts From a Shallow Mind, Indiana Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities and Other Offbeat Stuff and Mornings with Barney, a true story highlighting Wolfsie’s endearing relationship with his mischievous pet beagle. What if you were no longer able to sit at the bar of your favorite watering hole, sip a mildly hoppy craft beer on tap, and decompress with your colleagues after a long day of work? What if the law suddenly prohibited your occupation as the “corner confessional,” otherwise known as a bartender? Life suddenly becomes less tolerable in this scenario for some of you. And it was a lot less tolerable for many of our ancestors who endured Prohibition in the United States. Prohibition was a constitutional ban of the production, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages from 1920 to 1933. Spearheaded by social progressives from both the Democratic and Republican parties, Prohibition was mandated under the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It would not be repealed until December 5, 1933 with the ratification of the Twenty-First Amendment. The anti-prohibitionists, or “wets” as they were known, protested against the Prohibition as they felt that it was an intrusion on urban, immigrant and

drinking alcohol. Hamilton County women were the driving force around the county, and the desire for suffrage came out of the Prohibition movement. The women realized that if they couldn’t vote, then they were not going to have a whole lot of impact on a cause like this. The Indiana Historical Society has a traveling exhibit, “Hoosiers & Their Hooch: Perspectives on Prohibition.” The Carmel Clay Historical Society recently acquired this exhibit on loan and shared with local residents and visitors the era’s conflicting cultures through colorful historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana. Visitors will also see how Prohibition played out in Hamilton County. The exhibit will be on display through October 5, 2014 at the Monon Depot Museum, which is operated by the CCHS in downtown Carmel.

Prohibition affected leisure time for many nationwide, including the sports industry. Submitted by the CCHS.

“This exhibit is about Prohibition in Indiana and how Hoosiers experienced it,” Dill said. “The exhibit also demonstrates how it affected things now. Indiana has the strongest anti-alcohol laws in the nation. To a degree, elements of Prohibition are still a part of Hoosier history. It’s a great tie-in with what’s going on

locally with the opening and prevalence of many new local breweries, tap rooms and wineries. The after-story is that people are interested in drinking not to become intoxicated necessarily and cause havoc on the city and in their lives but as a way to relax and as a social engagement.” Prohibition was a failed political tactic that was used to deprive adult citizens of a freedom and the ability to moderate and make moral decisions for themselves. Honoring the history of Prohibition in Hamilton County, the CCHS proudly presents its “Flappers and Dappers” event this Oct. 10 at the Bridgewater Club in Carmel. The speakeasy themed event is celebrating the traveling exhibit and subject of Prohibition. “It’s going to be a great time,” Dill exclaimed. “It’s a fun and exciting way to support the CCHS and a great way for us to show people that history is exciting, relevant and it’s now.”

Guests of the Flappers and Dappers event can expect to walk in a back door kind of experience designed to make patrons feel like they are walking through the back room of a local venue to an undisclosed speakeasy. They will be offered signature drinks, cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, mock gambling and great music from Barometer Soup that will play modern dance music for non-Foxtrot types. A VIP experience will take place from 6-7 p.m. on the evening of the event. A specialty cocktail, souvenirs and special experiences that are not open to the general public will be available for the VIP ticket holders. Tickets are $60 for non-members and $50 for CCHS members. PROHIBITION FUN FACTS From the Carmel Signal, February 17, 1922, a Noblesville candy storeowner is arrested for selling candy flavoring containing alcohol. The Volstead Act allowed people to legally possess liquor, like whiskey, with a doctor’s prescription. However, Indiana’s “bone dry” law outlawed the possession of all alcohol, even for medicinal purposes. On October 28, 1919, President Woodrow Wilson vetoed the Volstead Act, which allowed for the enforcement of the Eighteenth Amendment and spelled out exactly what was and was not allowed. Congress overrode his veto on the same day.

During Prohibition, the Al Brady and John Dillinger gangs were patrons of The Slippery Noodle Inn in Indianapolis, one of Indiana’s oldest bars, established in 1850. The gangs used the rear building (originally the horse stable) for target practice. Today, several bullets remain embedded in the lower east wall. Hoosier vice president Charles Fairbanks, who married a Carmel woman, may have lost his chance to become president following Teddy Roosevelt because he hosted a political party at his Indianapolis home and served alcohol. A drink similar to the “Manhattan” was subsequently created and dubbed “the Fairbanks” in his honor. Carmel’s chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union continued its work even after the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. But not all locals were enthusiastic. A sign they posted on the edge

of town was defaced in 1934. Excerpts from the minute book of Carmel’s chapter of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union:

JANUARY 1931

“The WCTU met Jan. 16 at the library for an all day service as it was National Victory Day on the 11th anniversary of prohibition.”

AUGUST 10, 1934

Even after the appeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, the WCTU continued its efforts. Not everyone in Carmel appreciated its work: “A motion was made and carried that the prohibition sign, which was purchased and placed by the WCTU at the South edge of Carmel, be removed, on account of having been disfigured.”

PUMPKINS AND TREATS FOR A SWEET CAUSE:

RILEY HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN Your mother told you an apple a day kept the doctors away, but did you know pumpkins will get you an afternoon filled with IU Health physicians and a whole lot of special treats all for Riley’s Kids?

Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health North Hospital and RE/MAX Legends Group organizes a pumpkin patch event each year to raise funds for Riley Hospital for Children. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, and is free to the public. Drawing in an estimated crowd of 5,000 to 8,000 people, this annual event continues to grow in popularity, as do the donations they receive at the conclusion of this threehour event held in Carmel, Ind. All of the proceeds collected are donated to Riley. Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health North Hospital puts the area’s best children’s doctors within the reach of local residents. Bec Hunter, the event organizer and Realtor & Media/PR Director for RE/MAX Legends, has been organizing this event since 2003. “It’s hard to believe, but another year has rolled around and it’s time to plan our annual Pumpkin Patch Festival,” Hunter announced. “RE/MAX Legends Group is in general a big supporter of Riley Hospital for Children through the Children’s Miracle Network.” Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $5

billion for 170 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Their mission is to increase funds and awareness for local children’s hospitals.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are dedicated to saving the lives of kids in their communities. According to their website, CMN states “62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute — one child every second. Some are battling cancer. Some are suffering from a traumatic injury. Others require constant care because they were born too early or with a genetic disease.” Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are steadfast in their commitment to serve their communities and always have their doors open. “The total contributions to the CMN, from our RE/MAX of Indiana agents in 2013, was an amazing $174,909.87,” Hunter said. “Our agents can donate out of commissions that we make.”

“Together we can make a difference,” Hunter concluded. “Along with the public’s help, we can touch the lives of families who benefit daily from the care provided by Riley Hospital for Children.” The event will feature fun and educational activities for the whole family in the North parking lot and Atrium of IU Health North and will include fun games such as a life size “Operation” game, surgical services booth that teaches first aid and procedures, caricature artist, petting zoo, face painting, lunch tent, bounce house, train rides, prize giveaways and a free pumpkin for each child (while supplies last). Monetary donations for Riley Hospital for Children are accepted. The event will be from noon to 3:00 p.m. at IU Health North located at 116th and Meridian in Carmel, Ind. For more information about the event or how to make donations, contact Bec Hunter at RE/MAX Legends Group at 317-849-7653.

RE/MAX of Indiana honored their RE/ MAX associates and offices for their donations to the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals last year at an awards celebration at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis.

strangers very long. According to Gladwell, Roseto was an outlier.

In the introduction to Malcom Gladwell’s bestselling book, Outliers, he tells the story of Roseto, Pennsylvania, a small remote community in the eastern part of the state, where there was no suicide, no alcoholism, no drug addiction, and very little crime. Not many kids left the town as they grew up and no one was on welfare. People died of old age. Incidence of heart disease was so abnormally low that it prompted a medical study of the town and its residents. The study concluded that this anomaly of good health wasn’t diet or exercise or genes or location, but that it could be traced back to the paesani culture of the small village in southern Italy from which most of the families in Roseto descended. A culture where social interaction was a constant in the villager’s life and people were not

In sponsoring our first Community Night event in Carmel, it is our hope to do a small part in making Carmel such an outlier, like Roseto, by increasing the social interaction in our great community. One of our magazine’s goals is to bring Carmel residents closer together and gaining a sense of community by sharing their stories on a monthly basis. This event is just an extension of that purpose. As the title implies, we are having the event in a community or family table setting, which means long tables with everyone sharing food and conversation. This is not to be confused with a networking event where you collect ten business cards and feel you have satisfied your job obligation and are free to go or an alternative for Match.com. This is intended to be an opportunity to get

to know some of your neighbors in a setting that is conducive to enjoying good food, good drink and great conversation. We have picked Crust Pizzeria as our first site for this event for its exceptionally high quality food and atmosphere and the fact that its layout is conducive to a family table setup. The evening starts at 6 p.m. on October 16th. There will be complimentary wine tasting and 50% discount on bottles of wine. The cost for the event is $15. As you might imagine space is limited. To RSVP, go to goo.gle/HrzU5V. We will be including pictures of the event in our November issue. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

MEET RICK HARRISON: SENIOR FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR SYM FINANCIAL IN CARMEL Writer / Neil Lucus Photogrophy / JJ Kaplan

Rick Harrison is a 25-year veteran of the investment advisory industry and is also the senior financial advisor for SYM Financial Advisors in its Carmel office. Harrison has an unique commitment to his faith and community. For those unfamiliar with SYM Financial Advisors, it’s the second largest Registered Investment Advisory firm in the state of Indiana with an office in Carmel, which provides full-service wealth management, portfolio management and retirement plan management services to clients throughout the United States. SYM also has $1.5 billion of assets under management.

After working for 15 years with another wealth management firm located in Fishers, Harrison, in 2012, accepted a challenge to be the CFO of a church located in Little Rock, Ark. The church sought out a seasoned financial professional to temporarily help as it looked to move to an abandoned Walmart building. The move to the new space had the potential to put the church in significant financial trouble. With Harrison’s guidance the church successfully made the transition to the space while securing its financial future. With the job complete and the church’s finances secure, Rick acceptable his position with SYM. Upon returning to Indiana, Rick continued his commitment to his community and his

faith. Rick regularly participates in a local prison ministry that requires him to regularly meet with inmates at the local Pendleton facility. In addition to his involvement with the prison ministry, Rick is active in the Epilepsy Foundation of Indiana, as both treasurer and board member. Jerry Yeager, CEO of SYM, recently commented that SYM looked for quite a while to find just the right person to head its Carmel office. However, as soon as they met Harrison they knew he had the exceptional qualities they had been searching. If you are looking for an experienced financial advisor with deep roots and a commitment to his community, call, Rick Harrison.
