Tis the season to visit four residences with an historic flair, beautifully decorated with festive accessories. Take a step back in time with the Carmel Clay Historical Society during its 15th annual Holiday Home Tour. According to Katherine Dill, Executive Director of the CCHS, the homes are either historic or display special heirlooms from bygone eras. “One home features an extensive collection of Blue Willow china and others feature historic collections and unique antiques. Guests will enjoy seeing Carmel-related memorabilia and a special hotrod show.” Participants meet at Carmel Christian Church on Main Street and travel by bus to each home. En route, a guide shares stories of the various homes and furnishings. Guests tour at their leisure,

Ghosts & Goblins Haunt the Streets of Carmel’s Arts & Design District By Stephanie Carlson Curtis

A few ghosts, some super heros, a couple of bag ladies, zombies and princesses, pounded the pavement of Carmel’s Arts & Design District Saturday, October 29 during the 3rd annual Ghosts and Goblins 5K/2K. More than 900 runners, walkers, and costumed characters of all ages haunted a course running through downtown, starting and ending at Carmel High School.

Photos by Jesse Morton and Stephanie Carlson Curtis

According to, Diane Schussel-Klein, event chairperson and Carmel Education Foundation board member, the run is a fun way to raise money for the CEF and it takes a dedicated team to pull it off. “We were thrilled to promote student involvement having the CHS student radio station, WHJE, provide sound for the event as well as volunteers from the CHS Key Club and National Honor Society out on the course, at registration and packet pick-up. And a member of the Ambassadors Show Choir sang the national anthem,” said Schussel-Klein. In addition to the student volunteers, several CCS teachers helped out as well as the Rotary Community Corps, and school superintendent, Dr. Swensson.” Andrew Fritz won the 5k with a time of 17:01, followed by John Evelo in 2nd place and Denny Priest in 3rd. In the female division, 12-year old, Kenzi Wilson crossed the finish line first with a time of 20:46, followed by Gabrielle Stephens and Renae Murphy. In the 2k, the top five finishers, 11 and under, received awards. Those speedy goblins were Darren Yates, Chris Perry, Emily Hand, Matthew Moon and Nathan Enfield. The winner of the elementary school traveling trophy was West Clay for the second year. Participants from West Clay will receive a certificate for a free Orange Leaf frozen yogurt. Carmel Middle won the middle school banner and those participants will also receive Orange Leaf certificates. “We had over 20 vendors at the wellness fair,” said SchusselKlein. “I would like to thank the CHS custodial staff who set everything up in the cafeteria and then cleaned up after the event. In addition, we had 2 CCS bus drivers help by driving busloads of course marshals to their stations.”

Stratford Garage Sale Benefits Carmel Clay Library Reading Program

consignment,” added Winner.

As the saying goes, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Residents at The Stratford in the Village of West Clay proved that true by selling their unwanted goods in a community wide garage sale the last weekend of October. The twist to this shopping experience is all proceeds were to benefit the Carmel Clay Public Library Foundation.

And they did. At a special reception, The Stratford residents presented a check totaling $8,000 to the CCPL Foundation. “We are so pleased,” said Meeker. “It took a conglomerate of people to make this happen and many neighbors from the village came to help us.”

According to event organizer Mary Jane Meeker, the residents wanted to organize something to build a sense of community and contribute to a worthwhile cause, so she and Margaret Shaw started planning and collecting merchandise. “We chose to support the library and its Ready-Set-Read program that teaches literacy to preschoolers so when they get to kindergarten they can read,” said Meeker. “We thought we might raise $500.”

Mayor Jim Brainard and Foundation Board president, David Temple both complimented The Stratford residents on their efforts and thanked them for choosing to support the library – turning their trash into a valuable lifelong treasure for children learning to read.

The team of Stratford volunteers started collecting items in July, picking up donations at residents’ apartments. “A lot of people come to The Stratford with too much baggage. This was a chance for them to get rid of some things for a good cause,” said Meeker. Library Guild Member, Joyce Winner, who owns a company called Good Riddance, helped price items and organized furniture and decorative pieces for consignment with Consigning Women. “Some of the furnishings from the models were too nice to sell in a garage sale. I knew they could raise more money through 12

Six Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday Season By Melissa Webb It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? Sure the hustle and bustle can be fun, but what happens when the excitement of the season gives way to stress and exhaustion? As a yoga teacher, I encourage my students to make time for relaxation every day. That can be hard work on a good day and almost impossible during December. Here are some tips to minimize the stress of the holidays. Maintain as much of your normal 1 routine as possible. Try to keep to your regular sleep schedule. Follow an evening of too much food and drink with a day or two of a balanced, healthy diet. Don’t abandon your workouts completely. A few minutes each day of any physical activity will go a long way. Play with the kids or walk the dog. These activities help lower your blood pressure while they bring a smile to your face. Any opportunity to be with

2

people you love in a casual environment should relax you. Take a tea or hot chocolate break. Sipping a warm beverage will slow you down. Ten or fifteen minutes to enjoy a cup of tea while you people watch or sit by a fire could be just what you need. If it’s close to bedtime, choose decaf or warm milk.

3

Use aromatherapy, put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball then put the cotton ball in a small plastic bag. Leave it in the car, your desk, or carry it in your purse. When your stress level goes up, take a few quick sniffs. It’s guaranteed to change your mood. Lavender and chamomile will relax you. Use peppermint as a pick-me-up. Geranium or sandalwood oils are perfect when you’re under emotional stress.

4

Be still and follow your breath. You can do this just about anywhere. Sit with your

back tall and bring both feet to the floor if possible. Close the eyes. As you exhale, envision the breath moving down the spine from the top of the head to the tip of the tailbone. Inhale to bring the breath up the spine. Repeat for 10-20 breaths. Instant refreshment! Laugh often! Laughter is a great stress reliever. It’s fun, it’s free, and it’s contagious. Let the laughter flow.

6

When you’re frazzled from all the holiday hoopla take a minute to remember what the season’s really about. Happy holidays! Melissa Webb is a certified yoga instructor with a studio in Castleton. For more information, visit her website www.breathlifeyoga.com.

Mary and Martha’s 111 W. Main Street Carmel, IN 46032

317-848-2624 www.maryandmarthas.com Laura Shattuck, Owner, and her daughter Lillian Bernard, Store Manager - Mary & Martha’s Exceedingly Chic Boutique.

Mary and Martha’s: An Exceedingly Chic Boutique Story and Photos by J. Andy Murphy

Laura Shattuck wanted to open a retail store based on the philosophy that fashion is about textures, color and movement. She also wanted women to embrace their own body with wonder, no matter what size is marked on the tag. That’s one of the reasons Mary and Martha’s clothing inventory carries sizes from 0 to 20. The name of the store is unique in that it was conceived from a biblical reference from the book of Luke. “I wanted the store to have a focus not only for the business, but for me to live by as well. My life is truly about honoring my faith and my family. Fashion should be something that enhances your personal story. What you wear should enhance how you feel inside as well as on the outside,” Laura states in a quiet manner. Lillian Bernard serves with her mother as the store’s manager. Knowledgeable in all areas of the store’s inventory 14

it is a good pairing for this chic Carmel boutique located at 111 W. Main Street which opened on July 22, 2005. The fashionable store carries many lines of clothes from formal wear to casual blue jeans, jewelry, purses, scarves, hats and mittens and, Aquiesse candles (Made from soy that can also be used as a moisturizer for the hands. When the wax melts and is warm to touch, just rub it in with no need to peal). “We love bringing new styles and merchandise to the Carmel area. With all the new construction that has taken place over the last few years it hasn’t always been easy, but we dedicated our efforts to doing whatever it took to keep the business open and growing. In the end, it has put the Midwest in the spotlight in a very positive way. Carmel is now a destination city and Mary and Martha’s is in a super location,” said Laura. “There are so many new events taking place every week

…Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

now in Carmel that present an opportunity for our customers to take advantage of our inventory and for us to help them find their own personal style. If we don’t have something they want, we will go the extra mile to find it for them. We hand select every piece of our merchandise with 40% of our stock exclusive to Carmel. For instance, we carry the Masterpiece line of Brighton (there are 3 lines attached to this brand). Workmanship on the Masterpiece line is exquisite and hard to find in some areas,” adds Lillian. Customers are inclined to shop and then sit down on the comfy couch to touch base with each other and Laura and Lillian. It’s obvious that customers appreciate the extra service and warm atmosphere present in Mary and Martha’s. That’s a sound endorsement for a business philosophy based on a higher purpose.

Toni turned to Nyla Kurtz, a decorator who had staged Toni’s former home when they put it up for sale a few years ago. “I trusted her enough that I could turn her loose, says Toni. “Being an artist, myself, I understand how constraints affect your creativity, she adds. Nyla knew Toni’s clients usually come in pairs to sample the music, so she opted for chairs instead of the traditional couch for the living room. Nyla Kurtz with Enhancements by Design turned to a local Geist consignment store to find the perfect chairs for a Carmel project.

The living room is often underused in homes today, but for one Carmel resident, the living room needed to take center stage. Toni, a talented musician who performed at the grand opening of the Palladium in Carmel, made her Yamaha black piano the focal point of her living room. It was easy to entertain family and friends but, she noticed as

Finding those chairs posed quite a challenge. “The ceilings were high and the fireplace mantle was nearly 6 feet off the ground, which dwarfed all the furniture I had considered for the room. Since a lot of today’s furniture is low in the back, I knew consignment shopping was the only way to go, Nyla stated. The designer pulled two high-back, burgundy and green chairs with ottomans right out of the 80s from the Consigning Women’s shop located in Carmel.

“They were the perfect size, but the fabric had to go!” laughs Nyla. She chose “shades of grey” for her color palette on the walls, for the furniture and even the window treatments. The room was then topped off with a dash of purple, which is Toni’s favorite color, in pillows and throws. The nearby dining room, also painted in shades of grey, needed a little help in the furniture department as well. Nyla hit another consignment shop, this one Consigned by Design located in the Geist area. She found a Bernhardt blonde wood dining room table at a fraction of the price that it would have cost a few years ago. She took one of the chairs to Toni who admittedly said she couldn’t see it, but Nyla had a vision for the dining room. The blonde wood was all painted in the same grey tones, the hutch was painted to match an oversized flower arrangement which sat on top of one of her signature silk scarves. “I loved it!” says Toni. The end result is a stylish, yet comfortable atmosphere that greets you the minute you enter the home. And now, when Toni sits down to tickle her ivories, she is also tickled to know that her guests are enjoying their surroundings as they enjoy beautiful music

Late Carmel Attorney Leaves Legacy to Help Cancer Patients By Jennifer Alderman

In early 2010 Stephenie Jocham was a successful attorney running her own law firm, and a busy mom to two young sons. A rare cancer diagnosis changed all of that. Stephenie began a wild ride that included multiple surgeries and a mile-long list of therapies and treatments all in an effort to eliminate the cancer from her body. One might assume that a person battling cancer at that level of intensity would be completely consumed by the fight, but not Stephenie. Although Stephenie lost her battle in June of this year, her priorities to the end remained the same, caring for her children, running her practice, and keeping her faith foremost in her life. “Her faith was unbelievable”, says Stephenie’s sister Angie Daniel. “Everybody has bad days, but her good days were 99% of the time. Even during her most difficult treatments she had a huge smile on her face.” Stephenie considered herself lucky in a way that she had created a life for herself that allowed her to be financially solvent during her battle

Angie Daniel (front) heads up the nonprofit “Christ is My Big C” in honor of her late sister, Stephenie Jocham. with cancer, which allowed her to focus on her faith and family. She knew that many others were not in similar situations and became determined to help other cancer patients by starting the Christ is My Big C Foundation. This organization aims to provide funds to local churches benevolence funds to help relieve the financial burden of cancer patients with their congregations. Says Daniels, who is now the foundation’s executive director, “She kept Christ above cancer in her life and she really wanted to provide that assistance to other cancer patients so they could spend more time with their families.” Stephenie believed so fully in her vision that she made a large donation to Christ is My Big C before her passing, which covered all of the administrative costs of the foundation for the first year, allowing all funds raised to go directly to cancer patients. The foundation’s first fundraiser was a golf outing at The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club near Geist Reservoir. Over $24,700 was raised through a silent auction, registration fees, and donations. Plans are in the works for a fashion show on April 28, 2012. For more information about Stephenie and Christ is My Big C, please visit www.christismybigc.org. You Could Be a Pet Pal, Too By Patty Spitler

When you think about it, it’s pretty incredible just how much joy a pet can bring to your life. I should know. Louie is the man of my house. He’s a Bernese Mountain dog and he’s 120 pounds of love. Maybe you recognize Louie. He helps me host Pet Pals TV each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on WNDY-TV 23. Indiana’s weatherman, Paul Poteet, also co-hosts this wonderful show devoted to pet adoptions and the bond between pets and people.

This little puppy has grown into a handsome Bernese Mountain Dog who’s by my side today. Louie gave me the confidence to get out and enjoy life again. We want to know how a pet has improved your life! Share your stories with me and our Pet Pals team at PetPalsTV.com. Join us each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on WNDY-TV 23.

Paul Poteet and Patty Spitler co-host Pet Pals TV every Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. on WNDY-TV 23.

We spotlight dogs like Raymond, a stray starving Basset Hound who was taken to the Humane Society in Hamilton County. Turns out, he couldn’t swallow. We followed him as he got the surgery he needed. Today, Raymond is in a loving home. Our show truly saves lives. We can also make your pet a star! Share your photos and stories with our online community at PetPalsTV.com. We pick the best ones for upcoming television segments.

Let us orchestrate your dream.

We also pair local businesses with local animal rescue groups. Businesses get television advertising while the rescue groups share their critical needs to our television audience. It’s truly a win-win.

For the perfect products for your kitchen or bath, stop by a Ferguson showroom. It’s where you’ll find the largest range of quality brands, a symphony of ideas, and trained consultants to help orchestrate your dream.

I know how much a pet can improve your life. I retired from television after 23 years as an anchor and reporter at WISH-TV Channel 8. I have Meniere’s Disease which causes severe hearing loss and vertigo. I was depressed, isolated and alone. I thought, “what would make me happy?” I stumbled upon an old photo of me as a child with my father and our family dog. Just then, I decided to get a puppy.

Zionsville High School Marching Band highlights the Christmas in the Village celebration every year.

“We hope to make visiting Main Street a family tradition,” said Lesley Hunt, owner of Lesley Jane’s and a member of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce board. “In the past we held a tree lighting and festivities in one weekend, now we have expanded the celebration. There is something for everyone and we want to encourage family and friends to spend time together since that is what the holiday is all about.” Capturing the merry moods of revelers, holiday themed photo opportunities are set up around town at sites featuring the architectural character of the area and are available for individuals and groups. Residents and visitors are invited to enjoy the menagerie of magical moments in the village highlighted by entertainment and themes planned each weekend.

Celebrate the Arts Highlighting numerous galleries, Zionsville merchants dedicate each weekend to their talented artists – many of whom will perform live demonstrations of their work, painting in public and sharing artistic tips. Lesley Jane Built on Savvy Fashion Sense Story and Photos by J. Andy Murphy

esley Jane Hunt wanted to own her own business in Zionsville. She loved the area and the main street appeal of shopping. So she bought an existing business called Captain Logan, which was a furniture and home décor store. It wasn’t long until she started sneaking in clothing, which sold almost immediately, that she discovered the kind of store she really wanted to own. In 2009, she changed the name of the store to Lesley Jane and the birth of a savvy “Wear IT and not let IT wear YOU” approach to timeless fashion was put in motion. “My friends encouraged me to use my own name for the store. I have found that if you put your name on something, you are constantly reminded of every aspect of your business. Customers like the fact that I am on site every 30

day and can help them make decisions that best suit their personal style,” she said. “I love the opportunity that allows my customers to also become my friends. When I go to the clothing markets, I buy in limited quantity and select many styles produced by emerging new designers. I want clothes that have a timeless look. Not something you would find in a big box department store where they buy in bulk. Our styles lean to the European flair of design. Lesley Jane is also known for clothes that look expensive, but are very reasonable in price point,” Lesley adds. Her past experience working in visual merchandising and fashion with the very popular Paul Harris stores gave her the foundation to build on with this philosophy. With such broad fashion sense, Lesley Jane’s merchandise

appeals to all ages and blends together beautifully in store display. In stock, you will be able to find the newest fashion trend, vintage or retro-designs. Pants, skirts vary across the board and include one-piece rompers (we used to call them jumpsuits). These today rompers are elegant in style and very popular. If you have a special event on your calendar, this store offers an array of elegant evening wear (long or cocktail length) that is sure to please. Add to this, the opportunity to discover accessories from reader eyewear, to purses, scarves, coats and unique jackets. If you have a weakness for jewelry, make time to wander the store as this category of fashion will amaze you.

estled in the charming town of Zionsville, renowned for its quaint brick street and Victorian charm, you will find a successful framing and art operation that has been in place for over 25 years. In 1986, Barbara Jennings was working in the advertising industry when her parents proposed a business partnership in acquiring a custom framing business. The opportunity to manage a creative operation appealed to the daughter and so she found herself emerged in learning two separate operations: Custom framing and masterful art.

This business model works because art, no matter what the style or price point, is always enhanced when surrounded by a custom frame designed to complement the visual work of the artist.

Katie Harris (left) and Kelly Fuller (right) are custom framing designers at the Corner Vise Gallery & Frame Shop.

“I love our business. It has allowed me to indulge myself in the exploration of discovering new artists and the craft of framing, which is really art in a different format,” said Jennings. “I love to help our clients locate those special pieces that are just the right fit to go into their homes or businesses; or pick out the perfect custom framing selection to enhance their artwork or priceless mementos – all within their personal budgets,” she adds. Today, Jennings has a team of friendly, helpful staff associates. Kelly Fuller is the assistant director capable of art and frame consulting, as well as custom framing. Katie Harris is the full-time custom framer and Milo Popovich is a part-time art consultant. It’s a team that works well together. The Corner Vise staff offers no-obligation consultations, expertly honing in on the ideal combinations from the thousands of possibilities available in the custom framing operation. Craftsmanship and personalization are extremely important. Exceptional service is their goal, which they exceed based on stellar client referrals and comments. It’s obvious they have built a business that stands on an excellent reputation known for service and quality well outside their Zionsville zip code. “We offer an ever changing collection of original fine art, limited edition prints and unique gift suggestions. On display you will find a wonderful cross selection of artists such as the worlds’ most collected artist, Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light; Thomas Arvid, arguably the world’s foremost, wine painter; and romantic realist, Pino,” adds

Jennings with a warm smile. The variety of displayed art work covers a broad selection of art personally selected by Jennings in her travels across the country. “I was born in Jamaica to Chinese descendants. Needless to say, I feel lucky to be able to travel and discover new artists. Art is meant to feed your soul. I feel truly blessed to have this career. I owe it to my Mom. She saw the frame shop for sale and predicted it would be a great fit because of my love of art. It has been such a gift – here I am still thriving in this business after 25 years,” said Jennings. Visiting Corner Vise is indeed a gift. One you should give yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

Valierie Swack and Ellie Brown are co-chairing Zionsville’s Z-bowl Winterfest efforts during Super Bowl 2012.

Story By Joe Wadlington Photo by Jesse Morton

Zionsville Going the Whole Nine Yards for Super Bowl 2012 Indianapolis will not be the only place bustling with Super Bowl madness this February. With over 150,000 people flooding to the Circle City, the suburbs are stepping up to shoulder some of the burden. These 150,000 people need places to stay, eat and entertain themselves—Zionsville is answering the call. Z-bowl Winterfest, a four-day calendar of fun sponsored by the Zionsville Town Council will keep visitors (and locals) enthralled. The big game takes place on Sunday, February 5th, but fans will begin arriving several days beforehand. Winterfest activities will begin that Thursday the 2nd and continue until kick-off. If the Z-bowl Winterfest is answering the call, then Valerie Swack is holding the phone. Valerie, a 36

Zionsville town council member, co-chairs Winterfest with Ellie Brown and Ellen Butz, President of the Zionsville Parks board. Their hope is to benefit Zionsville by showing the nation what a great town it is—the economic boost shouldn’t hurt either. “Ellen and I were talking about the Super Bowl a few years ago in Miami and thought we should do something for Zionsville to pull some visitors our way,” said Swack. “This is a true grass roots effort, but we pitched our plans to the Super Bowl Host Committee and they selected us as a Super Celebration Site. We’re pretty excited!” The event’s website (www.Zbowl2012. com) features an extensive list of all the places to eat, shop, and event calendars for the four-day super weekend in Zionsville. This directory

is sure to move visitors through out the city and hopefully spread the Super Bowl business wealth. Z-bowl Winterfest boasts a variety of events. All ages will be roped into the festivities, as the menu is notably family friendly, a common theme in Zionsville. “It’s a natural fit,” added Swack in regard to the flavor of Zionsville and Z-bowl Winterfest. “We didn’t have to re-invent ourselves [for Winterfest] we are just doing what we do well.” Starting on Friday, participants can go ice skating in Lion’s Park. Whatever the weather, it won’t get in the way of the synthetic ice rink that Z-Bowl is boasting. The rink is made out of an ice-mimicking polymer, so even if it is 80 degrees and sunny (a possibility with Indiana’s fickle weather), Winterfest will skate on. They’ve also prepared an 80’ dual toboggan run for the next day. This run has snow cannons ready to make faux flakes even if Mother Nature doesn’t. The Walk & Roll Football Camp is one of the main events of Z-bowl Winterfest. This day camp is for children K-8 of all physical abilities. 200 children with and without special needs will get to play football alongside high school, college and NFL football stars. Taking a step in the philanthropic direction, Z-bowl Winterfest will be sending all the profits from this event to benefit more special needs programming in Zionsville. Z-bowl Winterfest is an impressive attraction put on by a fabulous section of our city. It is sure to leave tourists and locals alike thinking great things about Zionsville. More information regarding Z-Bowl Winterfest can be found at www.Zbowl2012.com and their Facebook page. There is even a Z-bowl blog to cover all the preparation.

Watts Fine Art: Bringing Comtemporary Masters to the Midwest

Story and Photos by J. Andy Murphy

W

hen John and Shannon Watts retired from Wellpoint, Inc., they wanted to find a second phase for their energy and passions in life as a couple. In their search, they discovered that their own interest in art most always took them out of the Midwest. They took note of this. “When we began our search for just the right location for our new business, we kept coming back to the village of Zionsville, where we live. Our search did indeed take us to multiple areas, but we both discovered that Zionsville was where we wanted to live, and work. When this site opened up, we went for it,” John said. “We felt that we wanted to focus on bringing nationally recognized artists to our town. It was a niche we believed would enrich and expand both communities of collectors and national artists. Business has been strong since day one, and there’s not a day that goes by that we don’t feel like sponges soaking up everything we can in the world of contemporary art. To us, we are fortunate to be able to do this,” John adds. Watts Fine Art represents a range of painters and sculptors. ”We host a lot of artists that we have in our own collection. It’s a true labor of love,” he says.
