Lady Hounds Par-tee to a Victory | Stephanie Carlson Curtis On the cover, we have featured Carmel Senior Makenzie Curtis who led her Lady Greyhounds to the IHSAA State Golf Championship after shooting 75 and 71 over the two-day tournament. After being on the runner-up team her freshman and junior year, Makenzie and her teammates finally reached their ultimate goal of a state championship in record fashion.

FROM THE PUBLISHER I’m back! After relinquishing the reins of the Carmel Community Newsletter for the last year, I decided to re-purchase the publication back and put more focus on our largest market area.

When we decided to expand into Carmel back in 2009, admittedly we underestimated the amount of work it would take to gain the acceptance and trust of Hamilton County’s largest city. After volunteering at the Palladium opening, CarmelFest, Carmel Library and at the Carmel Clay Schools, we started getting some traction. What we need to do going forward is to get back to what was working and re engage with the community. Our network of hyper local publications continues to expand (see our announcement on page 34). We recommit to all of you that we are putting the highest priority on making the Carmel Community Newsletter the keystone of Indy’s north side. Phone lines and emails are now being opened up to your story ideas and local news of interest. No story is too small. All feedback is welcomed. Best regards, Tom Britt, Publisher (317) 496-3599 NOVEMBER 2013

hen years of experience, practice, victories, disappointments, determination and grit harmonize with physical and mental performance, an athlete is said to be in the zone. Such is the case with the Carmel High School Girls Golf team as the four varsity players peaked to find their ideal zone and win the IHSAA State Championship.

After closing out the girls golf season as runner up three out of the last four years, the golfing greyhounds were determined to switch that routine. It was game on for the girls from the first match of the season. All four starters were back armed with the skill and desire to drive long, sink putts and card low scores. The team practiced diligently to prepare physically and mentally for each match, leading up to the grand finale and closed the season with a winning record of 12-1.

On day one of the state championship at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin, teeing off in a cold drizzle did not deter the hounds as the four girls all shot in the 70s, and the team finished in first place.

In the second round, competitive pressure was on to maintain their lead. In the midst of soggy weather and sporadic heavy rain, the golfing greyhounds found their mojo, broke away from the pack and claimed the title of 2013 IHSAA State Champions. “My freshman and junior year, we were runner up, but being state champion means so much more,” said senior Makenzie Curtis. “It’s a whole different feeling of accomplishment, winning as a senior and shooting my best scores. Every one of us had the skill. It was just a matter of time before we figured out our game and peaked at the right time.” According to Coach Ken Kelly, this team dominated the field and never looked back, leaving runner up Penn High School in a 27 shot deficit against the Hounds. “No team in the history of the IHSAA tournament has shot a better score,” said Kelly. “I am very proud of these girls as I have been all season long. As a player, you dream to be a part of something great and make a difference. Champions have a unique way of making that happen. Champions make history.” The Lady Hounds made IHSAA history with a score of 304-300 for a total score of 604 and the tournament record. Curtis led the Hounds with a 75-71 two over par 146 to finish third out of 100 players. Maggie Rees shot a 72-75 three over par 147 and tied for fourth place. Both Curtis and Rees made the IHSGCA All-State Team. Alyssa Cook turned around a slow start the first day to shoot a 78-73 seven over par total of 151 to finish tied for 15th. Sophie Kelner fought hard to shoot 79-81 sixteen over total of 160 sharing 31st place. Freshman Angie Kavanaugh was initiated with an 86-89 to total 175 and tied for the 64th spot. “Winning state this year is amazing not only because it’s been 33 years since our last state championship in golf, but

e Curtis

“We had three girls shoot below their average for both days,” Kelly said. “I had asked the girls how they wanted to be remembered. I think I got the answer loud and clear. They want to be remembered as CHAMPIONS!”

rust Pizzeria Napolentana, a new addition to The Shoppes at Providence located at 12505 Old Meridian St. and the corner of Carmel Drive on Carmel’s west side, is the creation of Owner Mohey Osman. Mr. Osman, a former old Chicago pizzeria in Washington, D.C. and the Egyptian cafe in Broad Ripple and West Lafayette, brings a vision of fresh, authentic and organic ingredients to casual Italian dining. As you walk into Crust, you will notice the sound of Sinatra or Édith Piaf circulating through the air and the aroma of fresh dough baking. Look around and you will see walls paneled with distressed recycled wood. Osman’s vision of a restaurant emphasizing healthy and sustainable principles was incorporated, not just in the menu items but also in the décor. As to Crust’s menu, it offers traditional Italian items such as paninis, calzones and a different pasta dish each day. However, its specialty is pizza. The pizza starts with the finest flour imported from Italy known as Caputo 00. From there, they ladle on a pizza sauce specially made in-house. The tomatoes used to create the pizza sauce are imported from

Italy and are packaged there within two hours of being on the farm. Crust uses only the finest of Italian and Wisconsin cheeses. The meats used by Crust are all imported from Italy except for its chicken which is locally raised organic. The pizza is then baked in an open stone pizza oven that reaches a temperature of 700°. You can match your pizza or calzone with one of their 28 different wines or six craft beers. A vast majority of the wines offered are from vineyards that are organic or ecologically sustainable. In fact, two of the wines actually have programs where they plant trees for every bottle of wine sold. On Tuesdays, Crust’s special is half off select bottles of wine. Crust is the perfect place for small groups to meet. They have three “community tables” that seat up to 25. In addition, it also has a small semi-private dining area that can seat 10. So if you’re looking for something special in authentic Italian casual dining that uses only the freshest authentic ingredients, stop by Crust Pizzeria Napoletana.

A Dream Comes True for the Marching Greyhounds | Stephanie Carlson Curtis As Carmel’s Marching Greyhounds tune their performance for the 125th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, parents are working diligently to raise funds necessary to make sure the dream

comes true for 250 students involved in the high school band. “After winning the 2012 Bands of America Grand National Championships, we received an automatic invitation to march in the Rose Bowl Parade,” said Michael Pote, Director of Bands at

Carmel High School. “We came out of semifinals in first place and knew it was a possibility. We had to sign a document soon after our win to accept or decline the bid. The minute we looked at our parents, they said, ‘Yes, we are going to do everything in our power to make this happen.’” NOVEMBER 2013

According to Tim Dawson, President of the Carmel Band Booster, the volunteer parent organization that supports the band’s activities, “The cost of getting the kids and trucking their equipment to Pasadena is a large ticket. We need to raise $600,000 which amounts to $2,350 per student. About 19 percent of the students will not be able to pay for a trip like this, and we want everyone to be able to

attend this experience of a lifetime.” Thus, the band booster organization has composed creative community partnerships. Car dealer Dreyer & Reinbold developed a car contest and contributed a discounted BMW to be raffled off this fall. The winner, Nancy Funk, drove off in her new car at the Homecoming football game. Mayor Brainard agreed to start a street musician program where students

volunteer to play their instruments in the Arts and Design District or at Carmel City Center in one-hour shifts on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. They earn $10 an hour and tips from the community which funds their portion of the trip. In addition, many local businesses have contributed. While an invitation to perform in the Rose Bowl Parade is what Dawson calls “the Granddaddy of them all,” Carmel’s band program has cultivated a tradition of excellence which has opened the door to national recognition. “The strength of the band is a result of consistency,” said Pote, a trumpet player and former student of former director Richard Saucedo. Pote joined the program in 1993 and was promoted to the lead role when Saucedo retired this spring. “My staff and I agree on what is important. We don’t talk about competition. We focus on music education.” Saxophonist Chris Kreke has been instructing at Carmel for 18 years. “We have the hardest working kids. Band is a huge time commitment, but the kids understand the requirements and our tradition of excellence,” said Kreke. “Our performances tell a story, and this year, we are stacking ideas and representations from cultures all

L to R: Chris Kreke, Associate Director of Bands; Mike Pote, Director of Bands; Andy Cook, Director of Bands; Kyle Young, Director of Bands over the world.” Throughout football season, the band has performed a progressive tribal-themed show titled “Totem,” executing unique components like 36 totem poles decorated with colorful designs consisting of a flight motif, snake and war concepts as well as rain dancing. The band will present this musical story during Bandfest which features outstanding marching

bands selected to perform the field shows that led to their success. According to Kreke, the band is composing a special routine for the parade which will be held at 8 am PT on the New Year’s Day broadcast by ABC. “We are working on a performance using music that fits the Rose Bowl Parade theme, ‘Dreams Come True.’” Seniors Leslie Mills and Stephanie Caress know they have worked hard to get to the top but feel blessed to have the opportunity to participate in such a highly visible and prominent event. “Not many people get the chance to participate in a national parade, and we are working hard so we represent Carmel with style,” said Caress. “Our parents have done so much for the band, making props and fundraising. Their support has been awesome. We would not be where we are without them,” said Mills. According to the Tournament of Roses, the theme, “Dreams Come True,”

reminds us that not only is it possible to attain the seemingly unattainable through extraordinary focus, effort and belief in the probability of success, but that it has been done. Throughout all of human history, we have achieved “the impossible” by believing in the power of our dreams. “The theme is appropriate to how we feel,” said Pote. “Representing the city of Carmel, our school and the state of Leslie Mills, flutist, Indiana is a and Stephanie Caress, huge honor percussion, feel blessed to for the kids. have this opportunity their More than senior year. 100 million people tune into the broadcast. f you take a drive on Highway 32 east of Michigan Road, you can’t help but notice a field on the south side filled with unique metal artwork, including 15’ dinosaurs, various animals and even a rotating wind sculpture with hearts gyrating in every direction. You want to slow down to take in the sights and appreciate the creativity that is on display. As you stare in amazement, you can’t help but think, “How did they think of that?” Welcome to the farm of Ernie and Dottie Taylor, owners of the largest privately owned collection in the state of Indiana. Visitors come from all around the country and even abroad to enjoy the clever way that Ernie welds things together. From the Red Hat Ladies and buses of second graders to FFA and motorcycle clubs, people have come from far and wide to experience unique sculptures that bring a smile to your face. Everything here is made from recycled machinery and is welded into something new and treasured. The Taylors are proud to say, ”Everything we do is for others’ enjoyment.” Ernie and Dottie are adamant that nothing is for sale. There is no admission fee. Their source of pleasure is derived from the people that they meet. “If you make a product to sell, it isn’t fun anymore,” Ernie explains. “It becomes work.” The dinosaurs are some of the largest and most attention grabbing artwork in his field. Using oil pans for the heads, sickle bars for the teeth, pipes for the spines, disc blades for the humps on the back, vehicle frames for the legs and then customizing the claws and ribs by hand, the pieces are carefully welded together and become something bigger than each individual part. This charming couple has been married almost 57 years, and their relationship still glows with love, support and a great sense of humor. It is truly a Romeo and Juliet story of how true love really should be. Through many years, both thick and thin, they were and still are best friends. The twinkle in their eyes illustrates their support and enjoyment of one another. The young Taylor family started from humble beginnings. Ernie supported the family working for a mechanical contractor as a pipe welder. He was employed at various power plants, including Rock Island Refinery on West 86th Street in Indianapolis and the old Harding Street Powerhouse. Welding was his life and livelihood. NOVEMBER 2013

It’s just stuff. Stuff can’t make you happy. It’s joy you bring to “others that brings peace to your heart.” -Dot & Ernie Taylor Dottie ran the household and kept a small jar for excess money. If there was any money after the bills were paid, they determined if they could use it to go out to eat or do a bit of shopping. Life was of modest means, and they worked together for the good of the family. They worked hard. They appreciated what they had. Ernie has always been an optimistic and creative individual who loved his craft. Even after spending a full day at work welding, he would come home to tinker in his barn and put things together in a whole new way. When he gets the “blues,” he goes to the shop. Dottie knows the value of giving him some space. Occasionally she is asked to draw something for Ernie, such as the angel that supports their mailbox. The Taylor family is one of great faith. The years have been good to the Taylors, although Ernie suffered a heart attack 12 years ago, and Dottie almost lost him three times. Ernie’s symptoms seemed to indicate heartburn. However, he was admitted to the emergency room and received life-saving treatments after a heart attack.

day. One year for her birthday, Ernie asked her what color of jewelry she preferred. When she mentioned “gold,” he went to the shop and created a 2’ diamond ring sculpture. She hasn’t worn it too many times though. It just may break her finger or perhaps her arm! But she beams with joy of this thoughtfulness. Ernie is now the proud creator of a can-jo that he plays with great talent. Using an empty spinach can, piece of wood and metal string, he created a musical instrument similar to a banjo. However, there is only one string. Ernie has mastered “Red River Valley” on his homemade can-jo, and to be honest, it sounded pretty good! Today the Taylors exude internal happiness and contentment. They don’t carry cell phones, own a computer or even have air conditioning in their home. A lot of things are nice to have, but they are not

During the last episode, Ernie confides in me, “I heard a strong booming voice very clearly and distinctly tell me that I was going to be alright.” And so he was. Ernie and Dottie also embrace the phrase, “We won’t slow up, back up, slack up, look up or give up until we are taken up.” It was primarily after his retirement and heart attack that he was able to spend more time adding to his ‘field of dreams.’ Ernie’s devotion to his charming wife is endearing to this

really necessary. They do not believe that they are missing out in their lives. Their motto is “keep it simple.” Letters of appreciation abound from the countless people that have visited. Volumes of notebooks illustrate the appreciation and enjoyment of others. This brings immense enjoyment to the Taylors. If you wish to visit their farm at 10985 E. State Road 32 and witness one couple doing what they love to do, why not leave a note in their mailbox? Dottie can then contact you with their availability and convenience. You will come away with a sense of wonder and appreciation for simple things. In leaving their driveway, a posted sign encapsulates the Taylors’ philosophy of simplicity and humbleness: “It’s Just Stuff. Stuff Can’t Make You Happy. hough Susan Goodman Komen fought breast cancer just as many women and even some men do, she is remembered as one who made an effort to make life better for others instead of focusing only on herself. Today Susan G. Komen represents the largest mass movement against breast cancer. Since 1982, Komen has invested $2 billion in community outreach and global research studying the causes, treatments and cures of breast cancer. Komen Central Indiana is one of four affiliates in the state. Of the funds raised, 75 percent of proceeds stay within our community, implementing grant programs aimed in helping 30,000+ low-income Hoosiers within 21 counties. The remaining 25 percent of funds are applied to global research grants seeking specific causes, improved treatments and lifelong cures for breast cancer.

COMPASSION CAN BE CONTAGIOUS

Born and raised as a Hoosier and now a Carmel resident, Dana attended Hanover College. She studied chemistry/ biology, thinking she would become a microbiologist, but fate drew her to the nonprofit world instead. She admits, “I have always had a passion for caring for those with low income.” She recalls an unforgettable moment as she was volunteering one morning with onsite registration for “Race for the Cure.” She asked a participant if she was running as a survivor, and the woman replied with tears in her eyes, “Well I thought I was, but I just found out I’m not.” She had been to the doctor the day before to learn that her cancer had metastasized. Dana felt an instant emotional letdown and gave the woman a hug, reassuring her that she would be a survivor. This incident marked a turning point in Dana’s life as she recognized the crucial timeliness for taking action, being proactive and catching the cancer before it’s too late. NOVEMBER 2013

want to raise money and awareness. We believe you should be proactive and catch it early when survival is the highest. Surprisingly, most that get breast cancer don’t have a family history of it. My story isn’t any different than so many other women, but I had insurance. Not everyone is as lucky as I was.”

- Dana Curish, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Central Indiana & two-time breast cancer survivor

Photo Courtesy of Toni Folzenlogel When Dana was first diagnosed, she remembers seeing a poster with four women, one of whom was fading in clarity. Its intended message was that only 74 percent of those with early diagnosis would survive beyond five years. Fortunately, she lived as part of this percentage. Unfortunately, a few years after she was appointed as the executive director for Komen, she developed cancer in her other breast which was unrelated to her first diagnosis 16 years earlier; it was discovered in the early microscopic stage. By the time she faced her second diagnosis, she was amazed at how far we’ve come because the current survival rate jumped from 74 percent to 98 percent with early diagnosis.

“My mother is the strongest, most inspirational woman I know,” says Kim Capelli, Dana’s daughter. “She has been a strong leader in her personal and work life for as long as I can remember. In our crazy, busy lives, we don’t often take time to reflect, but each and every time I walk with my children to the Race in April and look at all the signs on the backs of the walkers and runners, I can’t help but think about my amazing mother. She is a survivor in the true sense of the word. When I wear the pink ‘in celebration of’

oliday Mart isn’t a craft fair, nor is it a hobby show, says Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) member Tina Hayes of Center Grove. Instead, it’s a one-of-a-kind shopping experience where people can find some of the most unique gifts for the upcoming holiday season. “You’re literally walking into the most unique mall you’ve ever been to when you come to Holiday Mart,” Hayes said. “It’s shopping at its finest. Holiday Mart is absolutely

worth driving to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for.” Beginning on Wednesday, November 13 and running through Sunday, November 17, JLI will host its 43rd Holiday Mart 2013, featuring more than 100 merchants from across the country. Buyers can peruse women and children’s apparel, men’s specialty items, gifts, holiday décor, gourmet food items, jewelry and more. Holiday Mart serves as the primary fundraising event for JLI, an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing

the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Funds raised at Holiday Mart benefit various projects and programs, says Mica Wilson, JLI president-elect of Zionsville. JLI estimates it will net around $300,000 from the event, and all the proceeds will go back into the community. This year, JLI is focusing on preparing students for academic success and is working with three local organizations:

A Holiday Tradition You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into 32

carmel C O M M U N I T Y

Carmel_November_2013.indd 32

In our fast-paced world where nearly everything is obsolete the moment it comes out, there is something very reassuring and endearing about our holiday traditions. Traditions remind us that some things are truly meant to last. For some, the holiday means traveling to see loved ones, pumpkin pie, stuffing and turkey roasting in the oven, while for others it means lying around watching football games or planning for Black Friday sales. Why not try a new tradition that will truly make a difference? Consider participatin g in the 11th annual Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash! The 2013 Drumstick Dash will be held in Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28 at 9 am for the 4.6 mile competitive run/

walk and the 2.5 mile fun run/walk. The Lil’ Gobbler’s Run is at 10:15 am. Wheeler Mission is expecting around 18,000 participants. Brian Crispin, Director of Marketing for Wheeler Mission, says the race “was the first Thanksgiving Day event in the state and is now the third largest organized run in the state with participants from not just Central Indiana but also from 48 states." The event is hosted by Blue Mile and will benefit homeless men, women and children in our community. According to the Coalition for Homelessness and Prevention, an organization dedicated to tracking the number of homeless men, women and children, the number of homeless in Indianapolis will be around 1,600 in 2013.

| Neal G. Moore She was a good student at Delta High School in Delaware County. She was an excellent speller, had a great vocabulary and wasn’t struggling with poor grades. But something wasn’t quite right with Lauren Dybwad, now 19, and a freshman at the University of Indianapolis. “I didn’t like to read,” Lauren recalled. “I didn’t like being called on in classes.” And the hours Lauren spent doing homework were piling up, sometimes until 2 am.

number grids as well as memory games like tic-tac-toe with a math twist. Within weeks, Lauren’s reading comprehension improved significantly, and she was participating in classes. Indeed, the training was so successful, she was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and received a full college scholarship. “Don’t feel like you can’t change. There’s always help for you,” Lauren advised. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Mom and dad believe the investment of time (driving from Muncie) and money was more than worthwhile. “The most valuable thing we ever did was bring Lauren to LearningRx. There’s no “Whether you or someone you know question about it,” Steve said.

The problem? Lauren wasn’t visualizing the words and concepts on the pages of textbooks. “It never dawned on us that she had a reading problem,” explained her father, Steve Dybwad.

A chance conversation led the family struggles with learning, or you’re looking Lynne McCauley noted that there to LearningRx, a brain training to be faster, smarter and more efficient are enormous long-term benefits for center that helps adults and children students like Lauren. “We are able improve how they process, recall and in a competitive world, brain training is to improve the strength, accuracy retain information. “Brain training a solid investment for anyone.” and efficiency of a student’s thinking is a simple but powerful way to ability by fine-tuning how the brain enhance a student’s core ability assimilates, processes, combines, stores and retrieves to learn faster, easier and better,” said Lynne McCauley, information and outputs that information as knowledge executive director of LearningRx. “Our brains are like or learning. It’s their most important ‘computer’ while in muscles. They function better when all of our ‘intelligence college,” she smiled. “Whether you or someone you know muscles’ – memory, auditory and visual processing, struggles with learning, or you’re looking to be faster, attention and speed – are equal in strength and working smarter and more efficient in a competitive world, brain together well.” training is a solid investment for anyone.” The Dybwads drove Lauren to LearningRx’s Geist office for one-to-one training three hours a week over 12 weeks. Another three hours of home instruction each week helped reinforce training strategies. Steve conceded that he was skeptical at first. “But what Lynne was explaining to us made sense. We decided to give it a try.” Lauren’s transformation started with visualization exercises. She was instructed to create an imaginary white board in her mind and to “place” items on it that she encountered while reading. The purpose was to develop her visualization skills to help strengthen her ability to “see” what she was reading, associate it with auditory information and then transfer it to longterm memory. Other tasks included visual pattern and number cards used to match similar shapes and remember and manipulate NOVEMBER 2013

SEASONAL BREW REVIEW - with Hans & Joe Editor’s note: With the explosive growth of craft beers as evidenced by some local restaurants and bars offering over 10 different taps and a multitude of bottled beers, we thought it was time to have an expert provide some insight into the world of craft brewing. For that we present Hans Maldonado, a bartender at Patrick’ Kitchen & Drinks in Zionsville and a certified beer judge, and his sidekick, Dr. Joe Lauer, a local cardiologist who has developed a great deal of knowledge on craft brewing from self-study and frequent tastings. Our plan is to have Hans and Joe write periodically on the seasonal brews being offered locally during the year.

Seasonal Beers of Fall

As the sun sets earlier and the nightfall comes sooner, that usually signals the appearance of malt-driven and sometimes higher alcohol beers. Since the choices available to today’s beer consumer are vast and can vary greatly in character, I hope this guide will be helpful when selecting one of the seasonal craft beers.

OKTOBERFEST/ MÄRZEN History of the style

The first Oktoberfest celebration began on October 12, 1810 and was not a beer festival. It was a celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. During this first Oktoberfest, the citizens of Munich were invited to partake in the festivities

Upland Oktoberfest

which featured a horse race at the end of the celebration. The party was such a grand time that it was repeated on an annual basis. Over the years, the festival was moved to an earlier date to assure better weather, the horse races were dropped and the celebration was lengthened. Today Oktoberfest in Munich is a modern example of bacchanalian revelry taken to the extreme.

Joe and I got our hands on a few of the Oktoberfests available locally, and here is some of our resulting conversation as well as a couple of reviews:

The modern version of Oktoberfest/ Märzen beers took form around 1841, and a significant portion of the credit is due to the Spaten Brewery. A proper Oktoberfest is brewed as a lager and should possess great clarity. Hop character is mild, and the initial flavor should be malty in nature, although the beer should finish dry. Mouthfeel should be of medium body and moderate carbonation. “Smooth” would be a proper description of the drinkable nature of these beers. Alcohol content should range between 4.8% and 5.7% ABV.

JOE: I can see your point, but when I want a beer that will inspire me to contemplate the meaning of existence, Oktoberfest is not the style I would look for.

Upland’s Oktoberfest is a golden copper color with excellent clarity and a constant flow of bubbles traveling from the bottom of the glass to the top of the beer. The aroma is a combination of proofing bread dough and baking bread that is about 3/4 of the way finished. The flavor is of toasty bread and some caramel malt with the addition of a faint hop bitterness and flavor. The beer is medium bodied with a dry finish.

JOE: Oktoberfest doesn’t usually excite me as a style. It is too simple. HANS: It is exactly that relative simplicity that I appreciate, especially in these days of over-the-top ales being produced quite extensively here in America.

HANS: You could get there if you drank 10 of them! JOE: I guess I can appreciate the approachability of Oktoberfest. HANS: As a bartender who does not always deal with rabid beer consumers looking for the next greatest and most revolutionary beer of all time, I know that Oktoberfest is usually a beer that I can recommend and pour for almost any beer drinker with little risk of rejection.

Sun King Oktoberfest

Sun King Oktoberfest is a light copper color with the total clarity demanded by the style. It possesses a steady flow of CO2 going from bottom to top. Aroma is mildly earthy, perhaps from the noble hop varietals with a hint of toasty cereal grains. There are some toasty notes and very little hop bitterness. The beer finishes cleanly with a light-medium body. NOVEMBER 2013

Upland and Sun King are not the only local producers of the Oktoberfest/ Märzen style. BIER Brewery makes a world class Märzen, and there are plenty of other excellent examples of the style made in the Midwest.

PUMPKIN ALES Modern pumpkin ales are a distinctly American creation. In this Golden Age of craft brewing in America, there are no limits recognized by our maverick brewmasters. Therefore, to use what is, for many, the key ingredient in a much beloved dessert and to use it in a perhaps unusual medium is a logical step in the evolution of the American craft beer scene.

In the time when America was still comprised of British colonies, pumpkins and other vegetables were used as a source of sugar in the fermentation process; however, the end result would have been quite different from the pumpkin ales found at your local craft beer store. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, pumpkin ales are almost sure to evoke one feeling or the other. If you are looking for a sometimes spicy, often complex and usually robust and filling beer, then this may be a style worth investigating. Joe and I sat down over a few pumpkin ales, and here is a snippet of our conversation along with a few reviews:

Schlafly Pumpkin Ale

Pours a true copper color with a high level of clarity. Clove, cinnamon and nutmeg abound on the nose. The flavor in addition to the pumpkin pie spices reveal the distinct but subtle sweetness of pumpkins. There are hops in this beer, but they are relegated to the role of background noise; the spices fill the role typically played by hops which act as a counterweight to the sweetness of the malted barley, and in this case, the pumpkin. You will perceive very little, if any, hop character in this beer. Mouthfeel is full bodied and moderately carbonated although the fullness of body mitigates the perceived carbonation. Finish is long and complex. The drinkability of this beer is tempered only by your tolerance for spice and alcohol, as it clocks in at 8% ABV. 40

carmel C O M M U N I T Y

Carmel_November_2013.indd 40

HANS: I am very hot or cold towards pumpkin ales. I am likely to be ambivalent to most pumpkin ales; however, I always taste with an open and subjective palate. JOE: Actually I am often fond of the style. Pumpkin ales usually bring big and spicy flavors that remind me of pumpkin pie, and as you might expect, these beers usually pair pretty well with pumpkin pie. HANS: That brings up an important point in this discussion. Some pumpkin ales do not contain any pumpkin in their production, but rather they simply use spices typically used in pumpkin pie. I prefer those pumpkin ales that use pumpkin in the mash and take a soft approach to the use of pumpkin pie spices. JOE: I agree with you about the use of pumpkin, but I enjoy the spices, even when used liberally.

Rivertown Pumpkin Ale

Pours a deep brown with shades of red around the borders. The nose is full of pumpkin pie spice. The flavor is definitely tilted towards the spice end of the pumpkin ale flavor spectrum, but the pumpkin flavor is there. Just barely. The finish is drier and more crisp and clean than many offerings in this style. This may be due to the light body and moderately high carbonation compared to other samples of this style. Other local pumpkin ales to look for include Flatjack Pumpkin Ale from Flat 12 Bierwerks and an offering from BIER Brewery. If you look beyond the borders of Indiana, there are pumpkin ales worthy of tasting from Brooklyn Brewery, New Holland Brewing Company and Southern Tier Brewing Company among others.

A note for hopheads

Hops are harvested once per year. In the Northern Hemisphere, this occurs during the fall, and that means there will soon be wet hop IPAs (India Pale Ale) available. Hops are very susceptible to mold, so they must be dehydrated quickly after harvest. Some are left as whole cones while others are processed into pellets or plugs. The drying process protects the hops from spoilage, but it also removes some of the fragrances and flavors from the hops. To take advantage of a recent hop harvest, a very small percentage of hops are hustled from field to brewery, where brewers await with kettles lit, hoping to utilize the precious ingredient that is the wet hop. For many breweries, there is little guarantee of acquiring these hops, and as a result, many do not produce a wet

hop IPA every year. Even the ones who do produce such an IPA cannot produce a substantial amount. Since hops are mostly water, and the removal of water tends to concentrate flavors, brewers must use more hops to achieve the desired effect. Using more wet hops also means adding more water which (L) Dr. Joe Laue must be accounted for in the r & Hans Maldon ado (R) recipe. Brewing with wet hops can be a technically difficult undertaking, to say nothing of the effort, expense and sometimes luck Sometimes wet hop IPAs are called involved in acquiring the ingredients. harvest ales, but be careful as the term There are a few breweries that produce “harvest ale” does not necessarily a wet hop IPA every year. Some of imply the use of wet hops. these include Three Floyd’s Broo Doo, I hope this has provided, at least, a Founder’s Harvest Ale, and perhaps starting point for your exploration of the largest producer of wet hop IPA in the craft seasonal beers you will find the Midwest, Two Brothers Brewing locally this fall. Enjoy! Company’s Heavy-Handed IPA.

CHRISTAMORE HOUSE GUILD’S MAD FOR SCIENCE GALA

On Friday, October 11, the Christamore House Guild held its “Mad for Science Gala” fall fundraiser at The Bridgewater Club in Carmel. Those attending this benefit heard from Keynote Speaker Steve Downing, former IU Basketball great and current Marian University Director of Athletics. A receiver of Christamore House benefits, Mr. Downing listed the reasons he has stayed involved with the organization. Gala Co-chairs Megan Evans and Lauren Selerno put together a wonderful evening of dinner and dancing to music by Endless Summer Band. Attendees also were able to participate in a silent auction as well as a live auction that included items such as a Napa Valley Wine Adventure, Cabo San Lucas Ocean Getaway and a fur trimmed shearling coat donated by Day Furs. Every dollar donated at the event supported the Christamore House’s STEM Lab, a new educational enrichment program for students in grades 5-12 who live and/or attend school in the Haughville area on Indy’s west side. The Christamore House Guild wishes to thank its generous sponsors of this event: Emmis Communications as the Title Sponsor, Apparatus, Moyer Fine Jewelers, Mi-Tech Metals, BKD, BMO Harris Bank, Nefouse & Associates, David E. Simon & Jacqueline S. Simon Charitable Foundation and Pinnacle Oil.

For over 100 years, the Christamore House and Christamore House Guild have partnered together to make an impact in the lives of residents in the Haughville neighborhood.
