The New Normal By Jennifer Alderman

The house is quiet now, which is a very rare occurrence. The silence provides me with a chance to think and reflect uninterrupted without someone asking for more milk or asking where their Han Solo action figure is or rubbing yogurt on my jeans. And my mind naturally wanders to this time last year, a time that has become divided into two sections – Before Cancer and After Cancer. Where was I this time last year? Was I sitting in a doctor’s office, clad only in a paper gown and my socks, waiting for him to change my life? Or was I blissfully unaware of the cancer growing inside me while I finished up making a Halloween costume for my little girl? A matter of days, seconds really, separate the two events, and that separation became a cosmic shift in my life. I remember feeling this way about my wedding day – that time was split between the time before and after – and in that sense, I almost feel as though I am now married to cancer. I feel like the diagnosis itself was the engagement, the surgery my wedding day, and chemotherapy was our honeymoon. That is all over now, and we are left to argue over who put the empty milk container back in the fridge and who left their dirty socks on the floor. Now we are simply an old married couple, my cancer and I, bickering and nagging, just existing in the presence of each other. Leaving the past for a minute, I begin to think about the present. Where am I now, one year, four surgeries, 16 rounds of chemo, and countless pills later? I am healing. Physically I will be recovering for some time from the effects of chemotherapy, and I still have a few small procedures left to

complete my reconstruction. I receive compliments almost daily about my “sassy” short hairstyle, and most people who give those compliments have no idea that it is really more of a “hair grow” than “hair cut.” Poor old “Maple Sugar,” my trusty wig, has been banished to the top of my closet. She sits there on top of her blank faced head and looks down at me, almost scolding, “Hey! I’m sassy too! Put me back on!” I’ve tried, but when I look in the mirror, I know that Maple Sugar is who I was six months ago, not today. One of the most important lessons I have learned over the past year is that life is too short to be anything but completely you. Life has returned to a crazy, breakneck pace, but I still manage to think about cancer all the time. Sadly, I have become a complete hypochondriac. I’m convinced that every headache is a brain tumor and every cough is cancer in my lungs. I’m hoping that this is a phase that quickly passes, because it is exhausting. And when I feel fatigued I’m pretty sure it’s because I have developed leukemia as a side effect of my chemo treatments. Surely at some point this will fade, and a runny nose 4

will just be a runny nose, but for now my poor oncologist remains on speed dial. I catch myself waiting for life to return to normal, to begin to feel normal again. And what I am slowly realizing is that there is a new normal now, and I have to stop expecting normal to resemble what it used to be. And that is a hard thing to reconcile, especially on those days when I’m having a bad reaction to some of my medications. On those days I find myself frustrated and angry and wishing cancer had never entered my life. I try very hard to be Zen and enlightened, and to be thankful for just being alive, but honestly it’s damn hard to be Zen when you feel like crap. But dwelling in a place of frustration of anger doesn’t get me anywhere or make me feel any better, so I have learned to move on. I have no choice but to accept the new normal, good and bad, better and worse. Just like that old married couple, my cancer and I are in it now in sickness and health, until death us do part. And since I plan on that being a very long time from now, I suppose I better start picking my dirty socks up off the floor. j a n ua r y 2011

Designer Labels Mean Better Community for Carmel High School Graduates By Michelle Momper

If shopping for designer clothes, contributing to your local community and cleaning out your closet sound like a great combination for the holidays, then you’ll want to know about Syleta.org, an online marketplace for designer clothing targeted exclusively for students, young adults and parents.

The more Zhang thought about it, the more inspired she became. As possible business opportunities began to form in her head, she approached fellow Carmel High School graduate Le Wang, current senior at Indiana University, to brainstorm the possibilities.

The concept is the brainchild of Yifan Zhang, a Carmel High School graduate and Harvard University alumnus, who saw an opportunity to “go green” with fashion and help good causes, both at the same time.

“Once I talked with Le, we got so excited,” says Zhang, who currently lives in Boston. “We ultimately wanted to create an online marketplace that would rely on completely donated pieces, with proceeds going toward amazing causes benefitting women’s initiatives,” she says.

Throughout her college career, Zhang increasingly realized that so many consumers, particularly college students and fashion-forward women, had designer clothes collecting dust in the back of their closets. “I saw so many successful, wealthy women with no place to donate their designer clothing,” she explains. “For many, the experience of dealing with consignment shops is frustrating, so these great clothes just end up hanging in the closet indefinitely,” she says.

“I was immediately interested in the idea,” says Wang. “Our vision turned into Styleta.org, which brings the hottest designer labels to our market audience at prices that students and parents can afford,” he says. So how does it all work? Say you have a closet full of designer clothes that no longer fit, or that just aren’t agreeing

Welcome, New Year! Bug Off, Resolutions! I love bringing in the New Year. I love the optimism, the idea of starting out fresh, and the anticipation of good things to come. I do not love, By Michelle Momper however, the question that fellow humans can’t resist asking: What are your New Year’s Resolutions? Asking someone what they plan to accomplish in the New Year is akin to asking one’s astrological sign: it doesn’t mean anything and nobody actually cares. I mean really, what qualifies as a good response? “Oh, I’m setting glorious goals that will improve my life, make me a better person and positively influence those around me!” You might as well run for Miss America.

The next time you’re at a party or socializing, and someone asks you, “What are your New Year’s Resolutions?” simply choose one of the following responses: 1. I’m hoping to cut down my drinking habit to just a case a day. 2. As long as I avoid Juvie, I’m good. (This is particularly effective for those over 40).

And then, and this is important, you simply sip your drink, bat your eyes and turn and walk away. You might not make any more friends, and you certainly won’t impress or positively influence your companions, but you’ll get a really good chuckle out of it. And perhaps most importantly, you won’t likely be asked that question again until, well … until next year. By the way, I’m a Scorpio.

3. Yes! 4. To get George Clooney to quit calling me. 5. Finally getting my Star Trek collection cataloged. 6. Getting to a Justin Bieber concert! I love him! 7. Convincing my (spouse/partner) to purchase a much larger life insurance policy.

Kids will be kids.

What the question really should be is, “What are your short-term goals that will undoubtedly last for a maximum of six weeks, and how will you make ARRISON yourself feel better when you don’t LAW FI know, IRM, LLC reach them?” I know, bah humbug(317) and all842-8283 that. So I took it upon myself to help out all of those who www.GarrisonLegal.com dread the same question that I do.

8. Hiring a better lawyer.

9. I’mget gettingin a Brazilian. What do And sometimes, they can trouble. you think?

Our Lady of Mount Carmel By Jonathan Haag

Our Lady of Mount Carmel held its first Mass in 1955 with a congregation of about sixty families. Fast forward to today. With nearly 14,000 members Our Lady of Mount Carmel is striving to minister to the spiritual and physical needs of not only the residents of Carmel but the entire world. I recently had the opportunity to talk to Father Richard Doerr about the mission and heartbeat of this Carmel congregation. Father Doerr states that the mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is to “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of time.” This mission, found in scripture, is lived out daily in the life of this church. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is first and foremost a Catholic Eucharistic community. Father Doerr explains what that entails, “We are known for our adherence to Catholic Church teaching as well as our fine liturgies thanks to our many liturgical ministers. We are obedient to the teachings of Jesus Christ and his Church and I think are a very welcoming community. We also have a special chapel where men and women gather 24 hours a day and seven days a week to adore our Lord in prayer and contemplation.”

the community in their traditional black and white habits. The Matthew 25 Center, located on the property of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, seeks to provide free to low cost solutions to those struggling physically and financially. Father Doerr explains, “Many simply believe that poor people do not exist in our affluent community. Yet, particularly in today’s economy, there are many families that are in crisis. We serve them through our Matthew 25 Center for the Poor with a large food pantry that assists hundreds of families each month, countless emergency assistance programs, a school supplies drive, and several assistance programs throughout the year (Christmas, Thanksgiving etc.).” As the new year starts, so do new classes. Father Doerr wants to inform the community that Our Lady of Mount Carmel is sponsoring a Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University that starts on January 18 and meets every Tuesday through April 12 from 7-9 p.m. They also have an abundance of adult education programs such as a Bible study on St. Matthew that begins on January 6.

Father Richard Doerr of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Beyond all of the programs and events that happen at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Father Doerr desires that everyone in the community know that “God loves them abundantly and his Church is here to serve you and invite you into the ministry of Jesus Christ. When we reach out to others, then we find happiness that the world cannot give!” Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located at the intersection of 146th Street and Oak Ridge Road at 14598 Oak Ridge Road in Carmel. You can also visit them online at www.olmc1.org or contact the parish office by telephone at 317-846-3475.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is also home to an outstanding school of nearly 700 students. The vision of the school is to be “a vibrant Catholic learning center where respect and responsibility are integral parts of the school culture.” The school also employs a wonderful staff that includes the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecelia. tired of looking tired? Sagging brows and eyelids can cause people to think you tired when you feel great. Sagging of the lower face, jowls and cheeks often makes you look older than you are. Surgery can turn back the clock very softly and naturally and is a frequent holiday gift for loved ones (or just for you!). Cost varies depending on the extent of surgery but ranges $3000-8000 (total). The photo above is a brow and mini-lift with chin implant.
