THE BRIDGE PEOPLE LOCAL COUPLE’S ROMANTIC ANNUAL RITUAL HAS DRAWN LONG-TERM INTEREST Writer / Fredda Kovacs Photography Provided

When Robin Boggs painted a little message of love at the base of the Fairview Road train trestle, he had no idea it would also leave an indelible mark in the hearts and minds of so many others. That spontaneous message - and the Boggs’ love story - has endured and enchanted for over 50 years. “It was 1972,” says Robin. “My best friend, Keith, and I had just painted a couple of rooms of my family’s new house in Carefree North. We were getting ready to rinse out the brushes when inspiration 4 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

struck. I walked to the trestle and painted ‘Robin + Debbie’. I was simply a teenager in love.” Robin Boggs and Debbie (Morgan) Boggs grew up in Perry Township. “We went to church together from the time we were 9 years old,” says Robin. “She ‘liked’ me in fourth grade and in seventh grade, but I thought she was a little dorky. By the eighth grade, though, I took notice. I thought she was cute, but by then she thought I was kind of a jerk.”

But, as fate would have it, at some point that year he won her over. Their first kiss was shared under the bleachers in the gym at Perry Central Junior High School. Their budding romance continued all through high school, even as Robin transferred to Center Grove High School in 1972 for his junior and senior years. Like most high school couples, they

Both graduated in 1974, Debbie from Southport High School and Robin from Center Grove High School. College sent them in different directions. Debbie attended Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis) to study

“I just couldn’t stand being that far from her,” says Robin. “I transferred to Indiana Central and we got married in December of 1975, our sophomore year. We were 19 years old.”

“19 - it sounds so young now,” says Debbie. The Boggs were blessed with a daughter, Stephanie, in 1978, and a son, Ryan, in 1982. In between these years, inspiration struck again and Robin added the number 5 next to their names on the trestle in honor of their fifth anniversary. He did it again with the number 10 as they celebrated their first decade as husband and wife. There was never a master plan to any of this, let alone a plan to update the number of years on a consistent basis, but as the years ticked by and their children grew older, Stephanie pointed out that perhaps it was time. Robin and Debbie both laugh as they relay her pleading, “Dad, you have to change the number! I’m 13 years old but the number on the bridge says you’ve been married for only 10 years!” The anniversary number has been

consistently updated ever since. “I used to change the number every year on our actual anniversary, but it gets cold out there in December,” says Robin. “Now I do it around Thanksgiving. People will drive by and yell, ‘Good job, buddy,’ and offer compliments. One time I was out there and a long-haired fellow pulled up and said, ‘Hey dude, did you make it another year?’ I nodded my head and he said, ‘Awesome man!’” On another occasion, they were pleasantly surprised to find a greeting card on the trestle addressed to “The Bridge People.” It was from a young girl, 11 or 12 years old at the time. She wrote that she was thrilled they found true love and hoped that she, too, would be so fortunate someday.

The Bridge People, as they are affectionally known, are surprised by the community’s overwhelming interest in learning the story behind “Robin + Debbie.” They were somewhat hesitant to share their story, as it was just an innocent declaration all those years ago - a simple gesture from a teenager inspired by love. But a recent post in the Center Grove Chatter Facebook group proved that “Robin + Debbie” is deeply woven into the fabric of many local lives.

always find him with at least one of his many toy airplanes in his hand.

“I was the first person to get the Outstanding Student in Aviation Award,” West says.

Although they had never met, Anthony West and Davis Cunningham traveled similar paths, having grown up in Center Grove and attended Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic School (OLG) and Roncalli High School. Those trajectories would finally intersect in the cockpit of a Republic Airways flight from Indianapolis to New York, with West as captain and Cunningham as first officer.

“I learned to read because of flying,” he says. “I was fascinated with books about airplanes. The school library even opened a special section on aviation just because of my intense interest in anything having to do with flight.”

Not wasting any time, West earned his basic pilot’s license three days after graduation in 2013, then headed to Vincennes University Aviation Technology Center. He earned his commercial license in 2016, joined Republic Airways in 2019, and was recently promoted to captain.

West was born to fly. His father, also a pilot, took him flying from the time he could sit upright. When he was a toddler, you could

That passion stayed with him all through elementary, middle and high school. As if it was written in the stars, Central Nine Career Center launched their aviation program in 2011. West transferred to Whiteland High School, enabling him to attend Central Nine, and was among the first classes of future aviators.

“As captain you are responsible for everything in and around the aircraft,” he says. “It requires constant monitoring of everything - conditions, for example. Do we delay? You’re telling air traffic control what the aircraft is and is not capable of. TownePost.com | January 2024 | 9

Mathematically, you know it adds up, but a hunch tells you it’s not the best idea right now. These are big decisions. With first officers, there’s more to it than just flying together. There’s a certain amount of responsibility in helping them develop their skills. It’s coaching, teaching and managing.” Regarding passengers, West says he likes to provide as much information as possible. “I want them to be comfortable,” he says. “I truly love to hear their stories about why they’re traveling. Maybe it’s a honeymoon or maybe it’s a long-overdue vacation. It feels great to play a part in their lives in this way. I also want them to know how much I appreciate their trust in me, in the crew and in the airline.”

Anthony West’s first flight as Captain

Cunningham’s natural talent was soccer, but he was no stranger to aviation. Those roots run deep in his family, with five members earning pilot licenses. Among them is his maternal grandfather, who administered flying lessons at the Greenwood Airport for 18 years, and, most notably, his mother, Jennifer Mullett, who is a commercial pilot for American Airlines. “I was exposed to the world of flying my entire life,” Cunningham says. “I guess you could say it’s in my blood.” Cunningham’s path to flight took off during a high school soccer tournament in Milwaukee during high school. As the games concluded, his mother suggested they go to the Oshkosh Air Show, which features thousands of planes, since they were so close. In addition to the latest show planes, there are vintage aircraft, homebuilt aircraft, warbirds, ultralights, seaplanes and amphibians, aerobatic aircraft, and rotorcraft. Cunningham was hooked. Before they even left the show, his future in aviation came into sharp focus. After graduating from Roncalli High School and earning his private pilot license in 2017, Cunningham headed to Indiana State University’s Professional Aviation Flight 10 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

Technology program. He earned his commercial license in 2020 and joined Republic Airways in 2022. Even though there is a nationwide shortage of pilots, Republic Airways still employs nearly 2,000 of them across 10 U.S. hubs. It is not uncommon for a pilot to enter a cockpit and meet a fellow crew member for the first time. Such was the case for West and Cunningham. “While passengers are boarding and luggage is being loaded, we are on the flight deck going through procedures,” Cunningham says. “With that, we’re also getting to know more about each other. ‘Where are you from? How long have you been flying?’ Those kinds of things.” “We immediately started putting the pieces together,” West says. “That someone else from OLG is also a pilot - what are the chances? And at the same airline, and also went to Roncalli, and lives in Center Grove. It was so cool to discover how closely our lives paralleled. It was like meeting an old friend I didn’t know I had.” Soaring smoothly across the sky at 30,000 feet, they reminisced about their years at OLG and Roncalli, as well as life in Center Grove. Amidst clouds and conversation, it was evident that they were destined for careers in flight. “I absolutely love this career,” Cunningham says. West agrees. “I can’t imagine not flying,” he says. I couldn’t do anything else.” TownePost.com | January 2024 | 11

HEALTH TAILORED TO YOU LOCAL CG FAMILY-OWNED WELLNESS CENTER TAKES PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE, WEIGHT LOSS, PEPTIDES & MORE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographers / Joelle & Lyndon Bradfield

Down to Earth Wellness Center, a family-owned health and wellness clinic, was born out of a family crisis in 2021 when Sarah Godsave’s husband, Matt, became severely sick. When traditional medicine didn’t provide a full scope of answers or a full recovery, Godsave, a nurse practitioner for the past 20plus years, looked to functional medicine. As she began learning more about nutrition, immunity and intravenous (IV) therapies, she recognized that sometimes traditional medicine only gets one so far in terms of healing and recovery. “I had a big aha moment when I realized that there are some things people can do to fill in the missing blanks,” says Godsave, the clinic’s medical director. “Down to Earth Wellness was born as result of that.”

Dylan Godsave & Sarah Godsave

As Godsave dove deeper into functional medicine, she learned that people don’t get all the proper nutrients from food, which is where IV therapy for nutrients comes into play. Around that same time she met Marlana Hitchings, who brought to the table knowledge about IV therapy and sourcing IV ingredients. She realized that depending on the source of an IV ingredient, clients had differing reactions. As a result, Hitchings, who now serves as Down to Earth’s IV room manager, began creating all the IVs in-house.

“It’s not a one-size-fits-all bulk order,” says Katya Knapp, Down to Earth’s office manager. “We curate everything so that it’s specifically designed for a client’s health.” This is also true when it comes to weight loss, which is why at Down to Earth Wellness, they offer a range of services to aid in that effort, including IV pushes, peptides, vitamin injections, bioidentical hormone therapy, and ozone and ultraviolet light therapy. “I can help my clients lose weight for an event if that’s what they want,” Godsave says. “My goal, however, is to help people really change their lives. “It’s not unusual for us to see frustrated people come in and say that they’ve tried everything under the sun to lose weight and have had no success,” Knapp says. “They feel like they’re failing at life. Down to Earth can be the game changer.” Godsave takes a close, comprehensive look at a client’s health, because often their roadblocks to weight loss have to do with more than just their eating habits. The team at Down to Earth Wellness gives clients the tools to reset their body’s metabolic cycles. As a result, the body establishes a new set weight, making it long-term and more effective. Down to Earth’s weight-loss program includes an intensive, 40-day human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) program. During those 40 days, clients consume just 500 calories daily. Clients simultaneously take HCG, which acts like an appetite suppressant. “Beyond those 500 calories, whatever other calories your body needs for energy is pulled from your fat stores,” Knapp says. “That’s how the weight drops off.” Throughout the entire weight-loss process, clients come in for weekly monitoring. “We check on how they’re feeling and answer any questions they may have,” Knapp says. Peptide therapy can also aid in weight loss as peptides improve one’s ability to burn TownePost.com | January 2024 | 15

fat, increase muscle mass and optimize the cardiovascular system. “Peptide therapy is a great option for someone who doesn’t want to do a diet program,” Knapp says. Peptides can also improve sleep, enhance cognitive function, increase bone density and strengthen the immune system. Whether a client is looking to lose weight or is seeking help for some other issue, one of the most frequent comments Godsave hears from clients is their desire to get to the root cause of whatever is going on with them physically. People might want to know why they can’t lose weight or feel consistently tired.

Whether for peptides, weight loss, or wellness care, Godsave analyzes a full lab panel to get to the root cause of the issue.

wasn’t the right age. Therefore, he didn’t test her; it turns out that she had the autoimmune disease.

During a client’s initial consultation, Godsave listens to their concerns. Often following this consult, clients express relief because many of them have sought help elsewhere only to be told that their issues are insignificant or even nonexistent.

“People know their body best, so always listen to it,” Godsave says.

“They hear, ‘Oh, you’re in menopause so this is just how it’s going to be for the next six to 10 years. Sorry you’re uncomfortable, but that’s life,’” Knapp says. “Then they come here where they are finally seen, heard and validated. This is why Godsave is often described by clients as “a breath of fresh air.” After seeing so many doctors who have not believed them or heard them out, they appreciate Godsave’s compassion, communication and commitment to care. For instance, one client’s doctor told her that she couldn’t have an autoimmune disease because she

She is in no way discounting traditionalmedicine doctors. Traditional medicine is geared to diagnose and treat problems, whereas functional medicine focuses on the root causes of those problems, to resolve them completely and prevent future issues. Also, traditional medical schools do not teach functional medicine.

How about The Nauti Yachtys with the winner of season six of NBC’s “The Voice” Josh Kaufman, Grammy winner Sandi Patty, or perhaps one of Indiana’s most famous musicians, John Mellencamp? What you may not know is that on the stage behind each one of them is local resident and keyboardist Troye Kinnett.

His early days in Muncie, Indiana, and attending a high school of 500 students might lead one to believe his options were few. The high school didn’t even have a football team, but Kinnett remembers plenty of opportunity. “We performed in the Macy’s Day Parade as a marching band,” he says. “I really found New York City inspiring. “My dream gig would be to play for ‘The Voice,’” he says. “Imagine all of those singers from all different genres of music, with all the different styles.” On his journey, the husband and father of one son has had the opportunity to see the world at least many stages around the world. With Mellencamp alone, Kinnett has traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Canada, not to mention every state in the U.S. with the exception of Alaska.

In 2005, one musician’s call changed his career forever. “Right after Hurricane Katrina, my brotherin-law and I had plans to go down to New Orleans and move the grandparents back up to Indiana,” Kinnett says. “I got a call on Thursday to record with John [Mellencamp] on Monday morning. They were recording for the Stephen King musical ‘Ghost Brothers of Darkland County’ and at the time were working with two guitars, a violin and an accordion.” Though Kinnett knew how to play the accordion, he sat in the back seat of the moving truck and practiced for hours. “Everything went great and six months later I got the call to start touring,” Kinnett says. His road to playing in the band for one of Indiana’s most popular residents is a testament to the hard work Kinnett put forth for years. Like in most professions, band members know each other, play together and often call on each other when someone needs a specific musician. “I’ve worked with everyone in John’s band in some way or another,” Kinnett says. “Dane Clark [the drummer for Mellencamp’s band] is who I’d call in for a recording session if we needed a drummer. We’ve done lots of 22 | January 2024 | TownePost.com

sessions together. In the same way, when they’re looking for a keyboardist, they call me.” In fact, Clark, Kinnett, bassist John Gunnell and violinist Miriam Sturm all have roots in Indiana. Compared to Kinnett’s Christian tour with Patty and the instruments used in her softer sound, the six-month Mellencamp tour earlier this year was on the other end of the spectrum - 77 shows between February and June with a plan to resume the tour in March of 2024. Kinnett plays harmonica, organ and keyboards for the band, and it’s safe to say that Mellencamp fans have heard a different sound on the star’s recent albums, giving audiences - and the band members - an eclectic list to choose from. “John’s style has changed over the years,” Kinnett says. “He’s stretched into areas like jazz piano on ‘Strictly a One-Eyed Jack.’ That album has three songs with Bruce Springsteen and, for example, the song ‘Gone So Soon’ has a cool, dark, jazz vibe.” A darker tone is emerging on albums such as “Orpheus Descending” and tracks like “Amen,” which Kinnett says deals with gun violence in America. Still, Kinnett and the band have a blast playing Mellencamp classics like “Jack and Diane” and “Hurts So Good.” It’s the variety that Kinnett enjoys the most.

“It sounds very exciting and romantic, but I’ve seen the back of a venue or theater and the inside of a tour bus quite a bit,” Kinnett sats. “You miss a lot of that beautiful scenery but we do try to catch as much as we can while we’re there.” He’s missed birthdays and sporting events, and other times with family. He’s also shared a Thanksgiving meal in Australia with catered food, alongside Mellencamp, Sheryl Crowe and the band members for each musician. “It’s strange at times,” he says. “You are on the other side of the world from your family and you have to work to stay connected and communicate, yet experiences like that allow the band to bond, so you make the best of wherever you are.” Despite his travel and mingling with some of the world’s most popular musicians, Kinnett is very much rooted in Indiana and enjoys sharing his skill with others. When not on tour, we can still catch the keyboardist on stage at local events or venues. “We just finished Farm Aid at Ruoff Music Center with John, and I got to see all the sets with Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews and Bob Dylan among many more,” Kinnett says. “That was a great event. This winter I’ll be out locally, with several artists throughout the holidays.” Visit troyekinnett.com for an updated schedule and more information.
