National Girl Scout Week Returns March 8 Through 14 Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
More than 100 years ago, Girl Scouts of the United States of America was founded in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Low. During a time when women did not have the right to vote, Low saw a need for an organization that enables girls to explore their interests and develop character. Although the Girl Scouts organization has kept up with the times, its leaders still follow its original goal of allowing girls to pursue their interests and improve their communities while having fun at the same time. Girl Scout Week is celebrated each year to raise awareness about the organization, and commemorate its history and traditions. “Traditionally, Girl Scout week always begins with a Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath in order for girls to be recognized when they attend services at their places of worship,”
says Katie Dawson, communications manager for Girl Scouts of Central Indiana. “It raises attention to the fact that Girl Scouts is about making sure that girls are prepared for a lifetime of leadership and adventure. This year the dates are March 8 through 14.” Leaders of the Girls Scouts organization focus on developing a lifetime of leadership by offering opportunities for girls of all ages - kindergarteners and first graders are Daisies; second and third graders become Brownies; fourth and fifth graders are Juniors; six through eighth graders are Cadettes; ninth and tenth graders are Seniors; those in grades 11 and 12 are Ambassadors. Beyond that, adults can become volunteers. “Parents are encouraged to get involved by becoming troop leaders,” Dawson says. “Other adults can volunteer too.” Within the various levels of participation, programming is carefully tailored to fit each age group. Girls are guided to develop a sense of self, display positive values, seek challenges and learn from setbacks, form and maintain healthy relationships, and solve problems in their communities. At the same time, science, technology, engineering and math are stressed along with the outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship. “Troops use their cookie money for community projects,” Dawson adds. “Each troop can decide on their own individual focus to make their community even better.” Recently, Greenwood Troop 1750 earned the Girl Scout Bronze
6 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCenterGrove.com
Award, which is the highest honor Girl Scout Juniors can achieve. The group worked with the Johnson County Animal Shelter to improve the quality of life for pigs. The girls researched grass and flower species that would be suitable to plant around a new pig enclosure. “Our girls harnessed their existing talents and interests, built new skills, and reached out to other community members to complete a project that exceeded their and the shelter’s expectations,” says Sandy Saha, Troop 1750 Bronze Award advisor. “As their project advisor, there was nothing quite so satisfying as standing in the pouring rain on planting day and hearing a girl say, ‘We did it!’” Most girls join troops at the beginning of a new school year, but leaders are always looking for new participants. A prospective member can join an existing troop within her school or find the closest troop’s location by visiting the official website. “Girl Scouting is a fun way to learn, acquire leadership skills and develop lifelong friendships,” Dawson says. “For over a century, it has been the premier organization that focuses on nurturing and developing girls.” Visit GirlScoutsIndiana.org for more information.

Christian Brothers Automotive has a new location in Greenwood. Located on the southeast corner at the intersection of Smith Valley Road and South Morgantown Road, this friendly automotive shop opened its doors on December 9, 2019, and is the third location in the Indianapolis area. After seeing an advertisement in a car magazine for Christian Brothers, owner Dave Barnett says he did some digging to find out more about the company. He figured that it was either a small company owned by two brothers named Christian, or it was a faith-based franchise. Luckily for
“Christian Brothers Automotive is a really strong franchise,” Barnett says. “In fact, I think Forbes Magazine ranked it as the number two franchise in the country, of all franchises, behind Freddy’s restaurant. It’s a fantastic business. It’s faith based, and a lot people describe us as the Chick-fil-A for auto repair.” For the last 12 years Barnett, his wife Colleene, and their two children lived in Lexington, Kentucky, where Barnett worked as a mechanical engineer and coowner at a manufacturing company. In the early months of 2019, Barnett decided he wanted something a little different that
would align his expertise, his faith and his passion for cars. That’s when he found Christian Brothers. Barnett sold his portion of the manufacturing business, applied to become an owner for the franchise and was ultimately granted the Greenwood location. “I got approved for the franchise in April,” he says. “We were moved here by June, the building was complete in November, and we opened December 9. It’s moved very quickly, and it’s been a whirlwind.” As a staple of the business, the Christian Brothers staff aims to make its customers comfortable. Each lobby features leather

chairs, a beverage and snack station, and a bar-high countertop that sits in front of a large window looking into the shop. “A lot of people who walk in say this looks more like a Starbucks than an auto repair facility,” Barnett says. “We have free WIFI. We have charging ports, so for those that want to wait, it’s a very comfortable place to wait.” Through text alerts, customers can confirm appointments, get notifications throughout the entire vehicle repair process, and receive complimentary inspections with detailed pictures and repair suggestions. To keep things running smoothly, customers can approve, decline, and pay for services right from their phone. If customers need a ride to and from work, Barnett and his staff offer a complimentary shuttle service. “People can bring their vehicle to us in the morning, and then we’ll take them to work, to school or home, or wherever they need to go,” Barnett says. “Then when their vehicle is finished, we jump back in the shuttle and go pick them up and bring them back. So they don’t have to worry about getting a ride or anything else. We provide all of that for them.” Barnett says the Christian Brothers staff views its role in the community as much more than just fixing cars. In fact, his mission statement for the Greenwood location focuses on loving people and helping them beyond just auto repair. “When someone walks through that door, fixing their car is ultimately secondary,” Barnett explains. “We’re going to love

that person. How can we serve that person? They’re probably having a bad day. How can we turn that day around? That’s really what we’re looking to do.” With help from his Carquest parts representative Harvey McCann, Barnett says he is able to get parts for repairs within 30 minutes, making him confident that his team can meet deadlines and get customers back into their vehicles promptly. Barnett says that if his shop ever misses a projected deadline, he’ll offer a free rental car. “You can trust what they say, and you will be treated better than any place you will ever go,” McCann says of the Christian Brothers staff. “Their mechanics do great work.” Christian Brothers Automotive is located at 4985 Smith Valley Road in Greenwood. Preparing your Lawn and Landscape for Spring Writer / Robert Pesto, Founder, Restoration Landscape Photography Provided
With the current lack of snowfall and mild temperatures here in central Indiana, you might have started to see signs of life growing in your landscape. Daffodils and daylilies starting to sprout, buds on trees looking plump and ready to explode into beautiful foliage, or even wildlife that would typically be in hiding until warmer days arrive. No one really knows what the remainder of winter will bring us, but it’s March - that time of the the season to start planning for your spring lawn and landscape projects. Here are a few tips to get your lawn and landscaping ready for spring. 1. Even though your lawn has been dormant since November, now is the time to finish cleaning up all the leaves and fallen limbs that you didn’t get to at the beginning of winter. Large quantities of leaf debris can cause lawn areas to die out due to lack of sunlight and excessive moisture. 2. Lawn aeration is important to allow roots to properly breathe - this stimulates deep root growth. Make sure the ground is not frozen so you can pull the deepest core of soil to the surface. Always aerate first before applying a pre-emergent herbicide so you don’t break the barrier that the pre-emergent herbicide creates. 3. Check your lawn fertilization equipment to make sure it’s operating correctly. If you have this completed by a professional, make sure you’re on their list to get the pre-emergent herbicide. This 12 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCenterGrove.com
is important to help fight off the pesky crabgrass that arrives in the early summer. 4. Fertilize! Fertilizing can be done with scheduled pre-emergent herbicide application, but remember - your plants are coming out of dormancy and they’ll benefit from some extra nutrients too. A 10-10-10 composition mix of fertilizer, or something similar, sprinkled around your trees and shrubs will soak into the ground and provide a boost to the color and overall health of plants. 5. Check your trees and shrubs for damaged limbs or branches that might be overcrowding other plants, gutters or building structures. Also, look to prune plants that might be too large for a given space, to allow air and sunlight into their interior. 6. Cut back any remaining expired perennials and dormant ornamental grasses. Grasses do provide some winter interest, but as we get closer to spring, it’s good to cut them back to at least threequarters of their original height. Watch out for any creatures nesting in them after you have cut them back. Geese and ducks love to settle down in fresh-cut ornamental grasses in the spring. 7. Take a look at your mulch. Hardwood mulches are beneficial to plants by providing nutrients as they start to decompose. Excessive mulch, however, has a harder time breaking down, and causes mold and runoff during spring rains. A good rule to follow is to always have between two and three inches of mulch cover in your beds to help suppress weeds and protect plant roots from drying out. If you do have thicker mulch in certain areas, remove it first before applying a fresh cover.
8. Dream about the possibilities for your yard and landscape space. This is a great time to consider the outdoor projects you’ve wanted to complete for so long. It might be a patio or maybe a gazebo for shade, or perhaps a fire pit for cool evenings to enjoy with friends and family. Maybe this is the year to get that outdoor kitchen you’ve always wanted. Now is the time to start planning these projects and searching for a professional company who can help make your dreams a reality. Get the year off to a good start by going through these steps so you’ll gain time this spring to tackle other to-do projects you’ve been putting off, like decluttering your garage or painting the trim on your house.

Jennifer
Within his first 16 weeks, Doug lost 47lbs! Within 11 months, Doug lost: • 61lbs • 14.5% Body Fat (over half of what he started with) • 37+ inches …And gained tons of strength! Since beginning the program, I have learned so much about nutrition. I have a much better understanding of what foods to avoid and which foods to enjoy, without guilt. I was previously a fast food and soda junkie, typically consuming 3 liters of diet coke each day. Now I routinely drink the same number of ounces of water as half my body weight, resulting in a tremendous improvement in my overall health. I have so much more energy and am more comfortable and confident in my body. My blood pressure and cholesterol have normalized, and I no longer require medications to manage them. I’ve dropped 61 pounds in 11 months and have gained significant muscle.
In just 12 weeks, Jennifer lost: • 30 lbs! • 9.3% Body Fat • 25 inches • Over 18 inches from her waist/abs/hips I wasn’t sure I was ready to commit to an intense, 12-week program but I decided to schedule a consultation to learn if this was for me. I discovered it was exactly what I had been looking for and needed to help me shed unwanted pounds, build muscle and improve my health through diet and nutrition changes. This program helped me do all of that simultaneously. I never imagined I could lose 30 pounds and shed inches while doing exercise that I look forward to and enjoy. I’m extremely happy with my results! This has helped my confidence tremendously! I used to be active and play sports and the heavier I got, the less I wanted to participate and put myself out there. Now that I have not only lost weight, but gained strength, I have started seeking out new challenges to tackle.

ld-school barbering with new-school techniques. That’s how Legends Barber Shop co-owners David Martinez and Justin Borton describe their southside Indy establishment. On October 28 of last year they welcomed their first customers on South Meridian Street, and have been growing ever since. With open ductwork overhead and plenty of lighting throughout, Legends features 1,600 square feet of old-fashioned barbershop décor. Twelve booths line the walls, adding to the old-school aesthetic and encouraging conversations among clients and barbers about sports, families and the community. “We put a lot into this shop,” Martinez says. “It’s top-notch in every fashion. That’s what we wanted. We wanted a top-notch shop with top-notch haircuts.” With 30 years of combined barber experience, Martinez and Borton spent eight years working side by side for another local barber, learning behind the scenes and figuring out what it takes to run a barbershop. It wasn’t long until they felt a desire to open their own location. They took the leap in August of 2019, and watched their shop come to life over the next three months. “It took a leap of faith from us and our wives,” Martinez jokes. Martinez is the first to tell you that his love for cutting hair started out of necessity, and before long he had a consistent clientele of friends and family. After some encouragement from his wife (then girlfriend) to attend barber school, Martinez realized he had a knack for cutting hair and enjoyed it. He now gets to share his passion with Borton and the rest of Legends’ eightman staff. To Borton and Martinez, surrounding themselves with the right group of employees at the shop is just as important as the ability to cut hair. The current staff ranges in age from 22 to 45, and Martinez says he and Borton look for barbers that have goals, families to support, and other 16 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atCenterGrove.com
passions outside of cutting hair.
coming to work at Legends.
“We have a good group of guys,” Martinez says. “There are eight of us that work. That’s really what we wanted to base the shop off of. You’re only going to be as good as the guys you work with. We wanted a good nucleus of barbers.”
“We had a big following before we got over here,” Martinez says. “There are some guys who had quit barbering and they came back, and now their clients are starting to find them again. Typically you develop a relationship with a guy. They know you and you know them.”
Both Martinez and Borton feel that creating a team atmosphere in the shop is important. Martinez says the duo prefers to talk about their staff as co-workers rather than employees, making sure they want to come to work and that everyone operates with a team mentality. While they encourage walk-ins at the shop, Martinez and Borton’s success thus far has come mainly from word-of-mouth referrals, as well as long-time barber colleagues
The Legends staff is familiar with several old-school barbering techniques like hot lathering, hot towels and straight-razor shaves, and these skills have come in handy for special requests from many Legends clients. While many of these skills are taught in school, certain techniques are learned on the job according to Borton. Nevertheless, Legends remains appealing for those who don’t have a special request
like a highly stylized haircut or a straightrazor shave - largely for its family-friendly atmosphere, customer service and lively characters. The shop offers haircuts for the whole family, beard trims, shaves and more. Martinez and Borton want their customers to feel like they can come in, be well taken care of, and not have to worry about anything else. “We put a lot into (the shop),” Borton says. “We expected (community support), but I don’t think we expected it this much. We’re super happy with how it’s going.” Legends Barber Shop is located at 8923 South Meridian Street in Indianapolis. Call 317-361-4018 and visit legendsbarbershopllc.com for more information.

Mayor Mark Myers Battles Parkinson’s Through Boxing & Community Support
“I’m not one to take anything lying down,” Myers says. “I look at this as a bump in life. I’m going to attack it head-on and keep going.”
heard about Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), an Indianapolis-based nonprofit gym with a mission to empower people with Parkinson’s disease. According to Juli Krizan, certified RSB coach, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates that 1 million people in the United States suffer from Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed annually. Research has found, however, that forced, intense exercise slows the progression of Parkinson’s. Therefore, a non-contact boxing-based fitness curriculum improves a patient’s quality of life.
Myers immediately began charting a course towards better health. He had

After two long hours of testing, Myers was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
A couple of years ago, when City of Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers was having issues with nerves in his neck, he underwent surgery to have four titanium implants put in. For a time, he seemed to improve, but then he began noticing numbness and tingling in his left hand, as well as some involuntary twitching in his left arm.
“Initially, it was a pretty big shock,” says Myers, who admits that he had a nagging fear looming in the back of his mind that Parkinson’s might be the culprit. But right from the get-go, he chose to respond to his situation with optimism.
“We thought it was related to the surgery so we didn’t think much of it,” Myers says. In October 2019, on his chiropractor’s recommendation, Myers saw a neurologist who specializes in involuntary tremors.

decided to join 9Round Fitness, which incorporates interval, cardiovascular, and circuit training regimens into an intense 30-minute workout in which every three minutes, members move from round to round, participating in activities such as jump rope, weights, moving bag, strength and resistance training, speed bag and core work. “At the end of 30 minutes, you’re dead,” says Myers, who has been going for three months and has been pleasantly surprised by how much he’s enjoyed it since he’s never been a big fan of exercise. “The last time I worked out was March 1, 1986, when I graduated from the Police Academy,” Myers says with a chuckle. In just three short months, he’s dropped 15 pounds, has built strength and stamina and has relished improved sleep habits. “I did karate when I was young, but this
is the first time I’ve boxed,” he says. “And the nice thing about this is that you’re just beating up a bag. Nobody is hitting you back.” Though boxing has been beneficial in numerous ways, the tremors remain — at least for now. Studies show that it typically takes participating in the activity for 4-6 months before noticing a reduction in tremors. Soon after getting the diagnosis, Myers and his wife Stacie (whom he calls his “rock”), chose to share the news publicly. He’s been blown away by the outpouring of support he has received from friends, colleagues and total strangers. “I’ve received hundreds, if not thousands, of notes, e-mails, cards and letters,” Myers says. “People I’ve never met from all over the state have

or balance difficulties. “I have a friend who is sharp as a tack and can talk with no difficulty, but his movements are very slow,” says Myers, who urges everyone to go to the doctor for annual check-ups.
“These days when I run into people, there’s a whole lot more, ‘How are you doing?’ and they sincerely want to know,” he says. “It’s pretty amazing.” Myers is hoping that his authenticity will give those who are struggling hope. And confidence to get checked out to those who are exhibiting symptoms such as trembling or numbness in the hands and fingers.
“And be honest with them. If you notice something, say something,” Myers adds. “If you chalk symptoms up to being no big deal and don’t say anything, it could be too late.”
Krizan notes that Parkinson’s presents itself differently in everyone. Some struggle with speech difficulties while others battle physical issues such as tremors, shuffling gait
Myers is a big proponent of honesty. Being candid with his community about his health was important to Myers, a Greenwood native, because he wants everyone to know that he’s not slowing down — and
neither is the city. He promises that work in Greenwood will continue moving forward. That work includes the downtown redevelopment, the new middle school site, and the purchase of properties on Main Street where they will tear down blighted buildings. “I want to see my vision come to fruition here in Greenwood,” Myers says. “I want to see downtown flourish more than it already is.” If you would like to send a note to the Mayor, write to 300 South Madison Avenue, Greenwood, IN 46142
