SALUTING LOCAL HEALTH CARE WORKERS ON THE FRONTLINES FIGHTING COVID-19 Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Remember the days when the notion of shaking hands with a rock-n-roll star or rubbing elbows with an NBA player made your heart aflutter? Remember the way your children watched superhero movies with their eyes wide and their mouths agape as they sat, mesmerized, at the notion of being able to fly, deflect bullets and neutralize the bad guys? Remember the times you had a random encounter with an A-list Hollywood actress at an airport or a legendary musician while vacationing in an exotic location? We remember such encounters because we, as a society, have elevated Hollywood superstars, sports icons, music legends and fictitious comic book characters as heroes in our minds.
We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a way that perhaps we never have been in our lifetime because we know the blood, sweat and tears that these men and women have It wasn’t until this spring when an insidious, shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic highly contagious disease swiftly and that has swept through our country, leaving jarringly upended our routines, our lives, our confusion, uncertainly, and blind fear in its families and our world that our definition of wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair “hero” was sharply redefined. Suddenly we salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls looked to doctors, nurses, hospital staff, first and other businesses shut down, those on responders and emergency personnel with the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, fresh eyes of gratitude and a renewed sense of many put in overtime, both physically and awe as we recognized the grand and personal mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow sacrifices they were making, daily, for the man. sake of their communities. This strange and surreal experience has
brought many lessons, the greatest of which is that we have heroes living among us. And for that, we are all eternally grateful. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank these beautiful people for their ceaseless sacrifice, unwavering commitment to serve and boundless love of humankind. According to Brenna Lee, PA with the Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) Emergency Department (ED), everyone has stepped up to adapt to changes that are occurring daily. “The front-line health care workers are getting a lot of praise, but it truly takes an

extensive team — from environmental service workers, respiratory therapists, the lab and radiology department, administration, security guards, pharmacy staff, and the list goes on,” says Lee, who decided at a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in health care by watching her grandmother work in the ED. Though Lee says she went into medicine to be able to help people during their most vulnerable time, recently the paradigm has shifted, leaving health care workers feeling extremely vulnerable themselves. “We are dealing with something we never expected. With increased protocols, social distancing and a general sense of uneasiness, I feel challenged daily,” Lee adds. “My coworkers are some of the most amazing people I know, and I’m so lucky to have them by my side to help ease the fears, show up daily and care for our patients with confidence and compassion.” Dave Van Remortel, Immediate Care Center/Occupational Health at JMH, has also noticed how difficult times like these
can bring out the true goodness in people. “I value the ‘yes’ culture in that when a request is made of you, say ‘yes’ and figure it out rather than finding reasons why you cannot or should not help,” Van Remortel says. “During this pandemic, people are saying ‘yes’ and that’s awesome. My hope is that many of the values that are learned during this pandemic do not fade.” Ryan S. White M.D., M.S. ED Medical Director, Emergency Medical Services Medical Director, Medicine Chairman at JMH ED, maintains that COVID-19 has sparked a renewed awareness and enthusiasm for what it means to be a health care provider committed to the wellbeing and safety of people. “It has breathed life back into what drove us here to begin with — caring for the patient,” says White, noting that a silver lining to the pandemic is the rebirth of the intimate and trusting relationship between health care provider and patient. “Shortly after the first cases of COVID-19 hit Johnson County and Franklin, I had the pleasure of witnessing atCenterGrove.com / MAY 2020 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 9
our community go the extra mile to show their appreciation to the doctors, nurses and supporting health care staff.” In addition, the Johnson County community has showered the staff with warm sentiments, cards, masks and hats, homemade treats and meals. “Most may not realize that we very seldom stop to eat when on shift in the ED. Most either skip eating or grab a quick snack while at their station,” White says. “When food is sent to the ED, it gives us a reason to take a few minutes away from all the chaos to sit in peace and enjoy.” When the world looks back on 2020, White imagines it will be the year we recall sitting with our families without distraction and really listening, playing games and meaningfully connecting in a sincere and completely connected sense. “I will remember 2020 as the year society was forced, by some fate of irony, to reevaluate and reset our values,” White adds.
And that’s good because perspective can be eye-opening. Michelle Bisesi RN MSN, Director of COVID 19 Unit at JMH, says that in her 42 years of nursing, she has never experienced the heartbreak of having to see her patients die without their loved ones present. And watching families tell their loved ones goodbye via Skype will be something she says she’ll never forget.
“I’ve seen staff cry who never cry,” she says. “But I’ve also seen staff step in and be that person who holds their patient’s hand when they pass so they won’t be alone. So for those families who have lost someone they love and couldn’t be with them, you can know that a nurse was there crying over them for you. Thankfully, Bisesi and her colleagues take comfort in knowing this situation won’t last forever. “[On my way] to work one morning, I realized that my normal had changed. And that many of the things that mattered so much yesterday were not as important today,” Bisesi says. “But as I drove to work, the sun was coming up and downtown Franklin that I love so much looked golden. For a minute, my life felt normal, and this COVID-19 virus didn’t seem real to me. But then I pulled into the hospital parking lot and put on my N95 mask and got ready to fight a battle that we can’t see. After 10 hours, I drove home with the windows down and the breeze blowing in and I felt normal again.” She contends the importance of paying attention to the normal moments so as to not get lost in the scary.
“We have to stay focused on the beautiful,” she says. “We’re noticing [it] more now because [in the past] we’ve taken it for granted.” When every day brings a new series of harrowing headlines, it can be easy to slip into sadness or flounder in fear. But I assure you, there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to this army of men and women as they are the heartbeat of hope that now, always has, and always will work tirelessly to relieve pain, save lives and restore health. These individuals dedicate their lives to helping us, as a society, live our best lives. Because as the saying goes, “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.” Thank you to all our health care heroes for what you do each day!

of the year on March 28, then another on April 8. For Rees, these two large storms within one week of each other meant it was time for his company to hit the ground running. “People need us, especially now,” Rees says. “During this time of year, we’re out here every day, seven days a week, going to bat for homeowners.” Given the circumstances, he’s had to make a few adjustments to keep his customers safe and protect his team from exposure.

we’re arguably the best in the business.” But things are far from business as usual. In the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Indiana saw its first hailstorm
“No-contact roof inspections, basically, we don’t even have to have contact with the homeowner,” Rees says. “We can inspect the roof, take pictures, take videos, email them and meet with their insurance adjuster on their behalf. Once the claim is approved, homeowners can just go straight
Rees lives in Bargersville, with his loving family including 12-year-old son Mason and two-year-old daughter Mila. “We settled in Bargersville because my family is here and I love this area,” Rees says. “There is not a better place to live anywhere around Indianapolis than right here. Center Grove has a great school system, people are warm and welcoming, and the area has everything you could possibly want while raising a family.” This same Hoosier hospitality is why Rees started Gladiator Roofing and Restoration. “Our community really cares about trust and commitment — that aligns perfectly with why Gladiator Roofing and Restoration wants to be an integral part of our community,” he adds. “What I’ve done is I’ve built a dream team with more than 100 years of combined industry experience,” he says. “Everyone here is the best at what they do. to our website and pick their shingle covers from there.” “I can’t even get out of these neighborhoods because people were just hit with hail and they need us to look at their homes,” Rees says. “We’re getting flagged down because everyone is home. I’ll go into neighborhoods to look at one house, and the next thing you know, everyone’s out in their front yards saying, ‘Look at ours, look at ours!’ And I do, I tell them, ‘You got it, I’ll be right there.’” At a time when many states are questioning whether to restrict general contract work and some others have already declared it nonessential, Rees begs to differ. Luckily for him, Indiana State Legislatures and the Department of Homeland Security are on his side. “We’re out here because we’re essential,”
he says. “Once a roof starts leaking, that home is compromised. We’re here to make sure people are taken care of, to help them get what they deserve out of their insurers. So we’re out here for the economy, too — we’ve got to keep the money circulating. And who’s got all the money?” Rees asks, laughing. “Insurance companies.” He’s halfjoking, of course. But he isn’t wrong either. In all fairness, filing an insurance claim is the easy part, it’s getting approved that takes skill. For instance, plenty of roofers are all too eager for customers to file a claim but then won’t show up to meet their adjuster and see it through, which is a real problem for homeowners. Whether that claim is approved or not, it counts. That’s right, even if there was never any damage at all there may as well have been — at least according to their insurance premium. And this is precisely the kind of thing that gets Rees going.
14 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atCenterGrove.com
For his customers, Rees pulls out all the stops. Take, for example, most roofing companies charge extra for securities like ice and water shields, synthetic felt, drip edge and gutter apron. Meanwhile, at Gladiator, everything gets installed on every roof whether the insurance companies agree to pay for it or not. “It would be nice if every insurance company paid for this stuff. But if they won’t, oh well.” Rees says, throwing his hands up in the air. “It’s worth it to guarantee our customers won’t have to call us back in two years. “If there’s a good, better, best, we put on the best and we put it on the front end of every job,” he adds. “We’re the professionals, they’re the homeowners, and it’s our responsibility to help them give their home what we know is going to last.”
“They know us,” says Rees about his vendors. “They’ve been working with us for years, and they know what I and everyone on my team are capable of. They know we treat everyone fairly, that we’re out to do right by everyone — the people we work with and our customers.” And so far, his business model is working. “I’d been ready for a long time to go out on my own, be independent,” Rees says. “Me and everyone on this team, we are driven by our customers’ complete satisfaction of a job well done using the best products available today.” Essentially, for anyone who’s in the business of prioritizing money over people, Rees has a list with their name on it. It isn’t a short list either, and that’s okay with him. “War is long,” he says, adding with a grin, “and this is “#Roof Warz.” For more information about Gladiator Roofing and Restoration, visit them online at gladiatorroofs.com or give them a call at 317-360-ROOF (7663).

academic potential to qualify for National Merit recognition from their junior year PSAT.

Preparing for college might be difficult to consider before one even receives their driver’s license. Center Grove High School wants to make sure sophomores do not miss out on the incredible scholarship opportunities available to them through the National Merit Scholarship Program. The key to unlocking these and other opportunities lies in the students’ scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). High school leaders found many students were unaware of the importance of the PSAT. In the 2017-2018 school year, they introduced the Trojan Contenders program to increase this awareness and, in turn, increase the number of students who qualify as National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists. The Trojan Contender program identifies sophomores who have demonstrated the

“I think Trojan Contenders is super cool for the kids. It brings positive attention to a test that some kids don’t take as seriously,” says Guidance Department Chair Meaghan Krukemeier. In February 2018, 19 students were selected as the school’s first Trojan Contenders. Students were treated to a complimentary lunch, while administrative staff and school counselors shared an overview of scholarship opportunities. Contenders viewed a testimonial video featuring past school scholarship winners and were advised to take practice tests. Assistant Principal Jennifer Perkins said the school also offered fun reminders, such as a Crush soda with a note encouraging the students to “Crush the PSAT.” School leaders hope the recognition and support raises awareness

with students and their families about the opportunities they can strive for the following school year. Though it is still too early to gauge the school program’s success, CGHS announced 11 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists this year, the highest number in the school’s history. In February, all 11 learned they had advanced to Finalist status. Trojan Contenders are identified based on their Selection Index score from a practice PSAT administered sophomore year. The Selection Index is a scoring system calculated from the Reading, Writing and Language and Math scores and used to assess National Merit Scholarship eligibility. Of the 1.6 million participants this school year, about 16,000 qualified as Semifinalists based on their Selection Index score. Semifinalists must then complete an application and fulfill specified requirements to qualify for Finalist status. Finalists are eligible to compete for Merit Scholarship awards which include $2,500 National Merit Scholarship and corporate and collegesponsored Merit Scholarship awards. These awards are based on the students’ high school academic record, activities and leadership. The PSAT not only serves as preparation for the college admissions test, the SAT, but can lead to other valuable scholarship opportunities. The Trojan Contender program acknowledges academic ability and also raises awareness to potential college scholarship money and national distinction. This insight and recognition provide support that cannot come too early for a high school student.

CENTER GROVE HIGH SCHOOL BOYS GOLF SENIOR TRIBUTE The IHSAA canceled the 2020 High School Spring Sports Season on April 2 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This concluded the high school careers for five Center Grove boys golf seniors, Alex Heck, Peyton Short, Caleb Tidd, Jonah Tracy and Kyle Bachmann. We acknowledge these outstanding young men with this special tribute. CG boys golf head coach, Matt Rodman, had the following praise for his seniors.
ALEX HECK “Alex and I have been together for seven years of golf. He was on my middle school team for three years and then the high school team for four years. It has been a pleasure watching his journey the last seven years. He is an absolute wonderful all-around young man. Hard worker both on and off the golf course. Alex is a really hard one to see graduate, but I am so very excited for the potential he has in everything he sets his heart and mind to. He has left a tremendous legacy and impact on the Center Grove High School golf program.”
PEYTON SHORT “Probably the biggest impact Peyton has left behind is his hard work and persistence. He has become such a motivated and mature young man in the four years we have had together. He has done such a great job reaching out to the younger classes as they have come in behind him. He has been a tremendous leader for the program and will have very big shoes to fill.”
CALEB TIDD
KYLE BACHMANN
“Caleb is probably the most athletically gifted athlete I have had the chance to coach. Once Caleb rediscovered his passion for golf his freshman year, he took off. Caleb is probably also the most competitive person on the team. I will miss his fire and passion. His positive attitude and drive to succeed are things that will always stick with me and I hope with him also.”
“Kyle always impressed me with his ability to be well-rounded. He was an active member in show choir, had a part-time job and was still a member of the golf team. In this day and age, that is something very hard to do. Kyle always gave 100% in whatever he was currently involved in. He has a tremendous work ethic.”
JONAH TRACY “Jonah has about as big of a heart as any young man I know. I can’t think of a single time when be brought a negative attitude to any practice or competition. He never would get down on himself and is such a good teammate. His attitude on the course is one that everyone should strive to emulate.”
20 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atCenterGrove.com
“This senior class is a group of program setters,” Coach Rodman adds. “They were my first group of freshmen when I took the job four years ago. Through their leadership, hard work and dedication, we have been able to push the program to the levels and heights that I wanted it to get to. They have left a profound impact on the future of the CG golf program for many years to come. This is a hard group not to get to go into battle with one more season. They will be a group of young men that I will never forget for the positive impact they have had on my life.”

CENTER GROVE HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS SENIOR TRIBUTE The IHSAA canceled the 2020 High School Spring Sports Season on April 2 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This ended the high school careers for six Center Grove girls tennis seniors, Holyn Aukerman, Jenna Boha, Gracie Bridgewater, Abby Hoard, Meg Strickland and Rachel Zheng. We are honoring these outstanding young ladies with this special salute. CG girls tennis head coach, Debby Burton, had the following praise for her seniors.
HOLYN AUKERMAN “Holyn is a feisty athlete with a tiny stubbornness streak. She brings a lot of energy to the team. I knew she would make an impact on Center Grove tennis, and she did helping her team reach the State finals three years in a row.”
JENNA BOHA “Jenna is bright, calm and confident. Jenna has a ton of grit and is one of the best mentally tough players I have ever coached. She is an extraordinary leader and will make a big impact to all those around her in the future.”
GRACIE BRIDGEWATER “Gracie is dedicated and always smiling. She handles adversity well, smiles and laughs frequently. She joined the team as a novice her junior year and made great strides in learning the game.”
ABBY HOARD
RACHEL ZHENG
“Abby is a quiet, dedicated leader. Abby is a rock for the team. She is willing to do whatever her team needs of her. She has been a wonderful role model to other girls on the court. She has been a three-year varsity player that has helped her team make it to the state finals three years in a row.”
“Rachel is quiet and bright. She joined the team as a novice her junior year and made great strides in learning the game. She was dedicated to the team and works very hard. Her communication skills are great which will help her succeed in her future.”
MEG STRICKLAND “Meg is helpful and willing to do whatever her team needs. She is bright, artistic and does not realize how great she is. She was a behind-the-scene rock star in practice as we prepared for the state finals the last two years. She will rock her next adventure in life with her grit, dedication and commitment to excellence.”
22 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atCenterGrove.com
“I love each group of seniors. When a group of girls becomes seniors it is their turn to lead the team,” Coach Burton says. “We meet multiple times before the season to plan and prepare. These girls were on it, and I was really looking forward to their leadership this season. They willingly took ownership of the plans we made. These ladies are full of smiles, kindness, quiet leaders, vocal leaders, dedication and care for others. They were ready to lead this team through a great season. My heart breaks that they do not get this season to make memories and leave an imprint on the Center Grove girls tennis legacy.”
