There are times when the biggest challenge of publishing this magazine is the abundance of stories found in our community. We first became aware of Amy Hollowell, the subject of this month’s cover story, in late December of last year. But it wasn’t until about six weeks ago we had a chance to meet with this fast-moving young woman while she was running some hot laps at the New Castle Motorsports Park about a half-hour east of Indianapolis. I think you will be very interested in what we captured.

If I were Alex Trebek, host of the popular game show “Jeopardy,” I’d say “The answer is … It has 15 cameras, weighs 50 pounds and takes a picture every 2.5 seconds.” To which you would reply, “What is Google Trekker?” But that doesn’t really tell you much, does it? For the full story of how this unique technology is going to give you a better view of the trails of Johnson County, you need to turn to Page 12 to see what Jim Eichelman learned when he recently visited the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department.

On Page 24, you will find a story that’s been in the works for 200 years. Now I am not claiming that we’ve been working on it that long, but certainly the State has been. It’s Indiana’s bicentennial, and Johnson County is planning a party. The planning brings together seven communities and many other organizations. Much of the activity will take place in September in Franklin. This is one party you will not want to miss.

Finally, I want to call your attention to one of the latest services offered by the White River Township Fire Department. It is not uncommon for them to receive a call for help, and when they arrive, have no nondestructive way to enter the home and provide assistance. They now have a program that can allow them to enter without having to break any doors or windows. Check it out – the Knox HomeBox may be just what you need.

ETHNOBOTANY PLANTS AND PEOPLE Writer / Nancy Craig

Last month, my sister Liz and her friend Robin were visiting from Arizona, so we went to see the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. While there, we went on the Ethnobotanical Explorations in the museum garden. The garden plants are native flowers, trees and shrubs which were used in many ways by the American Indians here in Indiana. Read more here: www.eiteljorg.org/explore/outdoor-spaces/outdoor-gardens.

Ethnobotany is described by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as “the study of how people of a particular culture and region make use of indigenous [native] plants.” Plants provide us with food, fiber, medicine, shelter and tools. Plus, as we saw at the Eiteljorg, the plants are used by the American Indians in making and inspiring works of art. Birch tree bark was used in making wigwams, the Red Chokeberry tree can be seen in the designs of the bead work and several plants were used in making dyes. The Black-eyed Susan flowers were used for a yellow dye, and the Blue Wild Indigo, Baptisia australis, leaves were used to make a blue dye.

Nancy loves flower gardening almost as much as she does her great nephews and nieces. Her interest in gardening intensified while living in Holland and was perfected with Master Gardener courses.

The Baptisia, or False Indigo plant, is my favorite perennial plant in my flower garden. I love it for the beautiful blue sweet pea-like flowers, its silver-green foliage and the seed pods that turn black and stay on the plant over the winter. The American Indians and colonial settlers used this plant for dyes and medicines, but I just enjoy its beauty and how it attracts butterflies.

My great nephews and nieces know firsthand about many of the plants that we grow for food like blueberries, peanuts and edible flowers. We are going to use this book, “Nature’s Art Box” by Laura C. Martin with drawings by David Cain, to make some art from plants. Eli will like making the pinecone bark houses out of the birch tree bark. We have a river birch tree in our front yard and plenty of pinecones from our pine trees in our side yard.

The twins, Lindsey and Lauren, are going to try hammering to transfer images of the flowers and plants like Zinnias and the Chokecherry tree that are in their yard to make greeting cards.

Friday night football is getting a facelift this fall at Center Grove High School! The football stadium's 40-year-old bleachers are being replaced for the upcoming school year. According to Center Grove Superintendent Dr. Rich Arkanoff, the bleachers were in need of some serious work. They are inspected after every football season, so that if repairs are needed, they can be done before track season begins.

“The engineering report came back citing some serious structural and safety concerns,” explained Arkanoff. “We brought this information to our board in February, and they agreed with our recommendation to close the bleachers immediately.” When that happened, Arkanoff informed Mr. Skillman and IU Health of the plans to close the bleachers, since they both have naming rights on the field and stadium.

At that point, Mr. Skillman indicated Ray Skillman Automotive would be interested in a new agreement to pay for the cost of new bleachers. “We are so appreciative of his tremendous generosity,” says Arkanoff.

“This donation allows us to replace what we had with a new, safe structure.”

“Our students at Center Grove are known for great academic prowess.

Our Choir is off the charts. Our band consistently is near the top of the State. The goal should be to compete and be the very best in everything we do academically and in extracurricular activities. To continue that, we need to also keep our school's buildings and grounds just as competitive.

The new home side bleachers will feature a new press box, personally paid for by Ray and Ann Skillman. It will accommodate both home/visitor coaches, staff and media, along with two suites. One suite will be reserved for the Skillman family. The other will be used at the discretion of the high school administration.

more community involvement and an electric atmosphere. The home bleachers will increase by more than 1,000 seats, while the visitor side will have more than 800 additional seats.

The north stands are still in place, holding around 900, bringing the stadium's total capacity to just under 6,000.

Obviously, there’s innate excitement over something new and improved, but we’ve only really scratched the surface on how this impacts others in and around Center Grove. “Center Grove is more than just a school district in White River Township,” reveals Arkanoff.

“We are the unifying force, the heart of this community. It is wonderful to see so many people come out – from young children to senior citizens – on Friday nights for high school football games.

We want as many people as we can to come and experience what Center Grove has to offer. Our arts and athletics events are a great way to do that, even if you don’t have students in our schools.”

There is also a unifying sentiment when it comes to Ray Skillman’s involvement and generosity. Arkanoff was clear in wanting to acknowledge and express a sincere thank you from himself and the school board to Mr. Skillman, his wife Ann and Ray Skillman Automotive for their tremendous amount of giving.

TREKKING JOHNSON COUNTY PARKS next department in the queue. The Indiana Park and Recreation Association has taken requests from various parks departments around the state and have established a schedule, allowing 35 departments to utilize this technology to map their trails, greenways, waterways and attractions.

After the arrangement between the Park and Recreation Association and Google was finalized, the Google Trekker device arrived April 1 and will be available to Indiana until the end of August. A parks department staff member noticed information in the Indiana Park and Recreation Association newsletter promoting the lending program. The program carried no cost, and it fit nicely with an ongoing effort to define and map the county park’s hiking trails, so Johnson County decided to write a proposal and was one of the organizations selected to participate.

15 CAMERAS AND 50 POUNDS

So, actually, what is this technology called Google Trekker? It employs 15 cameras taking a set of panoramic images every 2.5 seconds, uses GPS capabilities to actually map the images and uses a smartphone to control it all.

To me, it looked like a futuristic robot stuffed into a backpack. In fact, it actually is worn much like a backpack. It stands nearly as tall as a person and weighs nearly 50 pounds, so it can be physically challenging for the operator to hike trails carrying this on their back over uneven ground, ducking under low hanging branches and such.

If you have ever wanted to see what hiking trails look like before you set out for a county park, the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department has a project underway that will give you that opportunity. Using a Google Trekker on loan from Google through an arrangement with the Indiana Park and Recreation Association, the Parks Department is creating images of their hiking trails that can be seen and enjoyed on Street View in Google Maps.

With Street View in Google Maps, you can identify a map location and click on a button that will take you to 360-degree images taken at street level. Street View then allows you to rotate your view up to 360 degrees and even move through the images forward and backward much like if you were driving down the street. With images taken by Parks Department personnel and processed into Google Maps, you will eventually be able to do the same thing for trails in either of the two Johnson County parks.

Parks Department Superintendent Megan Bowman is spearheading the effort in Johnson County with the help of various staff members. The Johnson County department had the Google Trekker from July 5-8 when they passed it on to the

The rather diminutive Megan laughed, saying, “This thing will make me very tall.” The light is more conducive to good images at certain times of day, and parks personnel had to keep the device out of the rain. Not an easy task in Indiana in the summer, right?

When asked about the benefits she expected for the community, Megan offered a large view as well as a local view. On the grand scale, she indicated that some of the areas already mapped and online (like the Grand Canyon) allow people to experience beautiful features of nature in ways that they are unable to physically, financially or otherwise. The technology “opens the door for people to access places,” says Megan.

People with physical limitations will be able to experience wonders of nature more viscerally than viewing still photos or videos since they can, to some extent, control where they go and what they view.

Children doing schoolwork will benefit because they can go to locations they are studying and “actually walk right up to it.” Finally, those planning visits to locations mapped with Trekker will be able to make more informed decisions.

On the local level, Megan believes this feature will encourage

Whether it is fitness hikers, patients recovering from injury or illness, those with physical limitations, mothers with young children or just citizens that enjoy being outdoors, people will be able to look online and find the county recreation facility that best meets their needs. They will be able to answer the question, “Can I really do that trail?” says Megan. Is that playground appropriate for my children, or are there necessary facilities at that location?

In the end, when asked why she was excited about this project for Johnson County parks, she said, “It’s really kind of a groundbreaking thing. It’s a great opportunity to be involved in something fresh and new.”

It will take 6-12 months to process and review images following the August 31 completion of the Indiana program.

PRECIOUS MINUTES IN AN EMERGENCY NEW WRTFD PROGRAM HELPS FAMILIES

The entire team including family and fire personnel involved in getting the Knox HomeBox installed

and lives. This time versus cost scenario happens all too often. The solution for WRTFD occurred with a new system setup spearheaded by Leslie called the Knox HomeBox program.

According to WRTFD Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Matt Partain, the program, named after the device it utilizes, significantly decreases the time it takes to reach the patient. In the event of an emergency, the Knox HomeBox could give the extra time needed to locate a scared, hiding child, help a disabled occupant out of the home or save a stroke victim from long-term paralysis.

Nothing cries out for compassion and concern like a fire engine and an ambulance screaming through a residential neighborhood. According to White River Township Fire Department (WRTFD) paramedic Leslie Cuma-Fontaine, precious minutes are often lost in residential emergencies due to no access into the home.

First responders struggle to prevent costly entry damage while protecting property

As a 16-year firefighter, Matt has experienced those times when intense seconds are uncertain. “We wanted to try the Knox HomeBox out on a residential home. I knew my parents who live in the township could benefit by the Knox HomeBox program,” said Matt. “Because of my mother’s physical limitations, my father worries about leaving her alone for extended periods. For me, getting a Knox

HomeBox for my parents was a no-brainer.

WHAT IS A KNOX HOMEBOX?

Talking with Sue Partain, Matt’s mother, she told her story as to why Matt obtained the Knox HomeBox. While driving to work in April 1985, Sue began experiencing double vision and stroke-like symptoms. A spinal tap and an examination of her brain resulted in a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Ten years later and still mobile, Sue and her husband Don built a home accessible for her future needs. Today, Sue functions with the use of a wheelchair.

WINE, ART, MUSIC AND MICROBREWS Many Indianapolis metro residents are familiar with Taxman Brewing and Mallow Run Winery. However, the wines and microbrews of Johnson County extend well beyond those two. The county is home to more than five microbreweries including Oaken Barrel, one of the original brewers in the state.

Nearly 20 brewers and wineries from around Indiana will come together to celebrate Indiana’s wine, art, music and microbrews at WAMMfest at Craig Park in Greenwood Saturday, August 20.

This year, WAMMfest features 10 breweries, nine wineries, a large number of restaurants, food trucks, live music and more than 70 artist booths in a juried art

fair. The juried art fair ensures that only Indiana’s finest artist and craftspeople will fill Artists Alley featuring jewelry, painting, sculptures, baskets, clothing and more. Live music includes acoustic acts, a string quartet, jazz and a selection of retro and contemporary bands.

In its first seven years, WAMMfest has become a wonderful way to spend a Saturday, attacking more than 6,000 people annually from all around the metro area. The event, organized by the Sertoma Club of Greenwood, has resulted in $450,000 being donated by Sertoma for local causes and charities.

A 200th birthday is a significant occasion, and beginning in December of last year, individual counties across the state have been celebrating. Indiana, the 19th state to join with the United States of America, turns 200 years old December 11, 2016. Johnson County kicked off a season of commemorating Indiana’s Bicentennial when a flag was erected on the courthouse lawn in December 2015 and will culminate in September with a big celebration.

JOHNSON COUNTY’S CELEBRATION Residents of Johnson County are invited to the Bicentennial Festival in Franklin, the county seat, September 23. The Bicentennial Relay Torch is being carried 3,200 miles across 92 counties, and the passing of the torch will kick off the opening ceremony. It is patterned after the Olympic torch to inspire and unify communities as “One” Indiana.

County officials will welcome the torch at 5 p.m., and Commissioner Brian Baird will speak on the south side of the courthouse. The celebration will conclude with a concert of songs reminiscent of Indiana life played by a favorite regional band, Tastes Like Chicken, from 7-10 p.m.

In between times, there will history, trivia and old maps for a peek at the past. The Johnson County Museum and Franklin College have created displays depicting life in Johnson County, and they will be shown in a mobile unit parked by the Johnson County Public Library ( JCPL) Adult Learning Center at the corner of Monroe and South Main Streets. Accompanying the torch is a Mobile Visitors Center of the history of the State of Indiana.

You won’t want to miss the public art project at the JCPL. Counties across Indiana have purchased white fiberglass life-sized bison and painted them in unique ways, naming this project the BisonTennial. It commemorates the bison on the Indiana state seal.

Johnson County Rotary Clubs purchased this one for $2,500, and Kira Brant of Art by Kira Studio has coordinated the painting.

Another feature of the festival is the County Marketplace on Monroe and Water Streets. Seven communities of Johnson County are coming together: Greenwood, Whiteland/ New Whiteland, Franklin, Bargersville, Trafalgar, Edinburgh and Princess Lakes/Nineveh. They will showcase notable effects from each community.

Tara Payne, Executive Director of Discover Downtown Franklin, says, “This is the first time we have had the entire county collaborate on one event.”

The camaraderie has brought the county together like nothing else, and she hopes they can do more together in the future.

As with any celebration, there will be food and drinks. A beer and wine garden will serve libations from the counties’ five craft breweries and two wineries. Food from the county will also be served with the lineup still open to applicants.

“So when do I get my own go-kart?” Posing this question to her dad, 5-year-old Amy Hollowell unknowingly launched her racing career.

SURPRISING BEGINNINGS

Having spent much time on the sidelines watching her brother race, Amy caught the racing bug early and has never looked back. “I grew up with an older brother racing, and he inspired me to start racing. I grew up at the racetrack so much that it has become like my home.”

Her first few driving experiences were in a parking lot. “They took me to an empty lot to try it and get a feel for it without other cars around,” she said. But as her father, Dave Hollowell, explained, “She never had any fear … even from the very beginning,” he said.

PROGRESSION OF A CHAMPION

Beginning with oval tracks, she made a name for herself, then moved on to road racing. Her road racing titles include fourtime National Champion, and more recently, the World Karting Association National Championship in both of her racing classes in 2015.

She’s raced on many famous road courses, including (but not limited to) Virginia International Raceway, Daytona International Raceway and National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. “It was a wonderful experience to move up to road racing,” Amy explained. atCenterGrove.com / AUGUST 2016 / CENTER GROVE COMMUNITY MAGAZINE / 29

“I was able to race on tracks that IndyCar drivers race on, and I thought it was really amazing to win at Daytona and Mid-Ohio. I was able to see what the tracks are like before moving into race cars.”

As she begins her sophomore year at Center Grove High School, she is currently in the midst of another transition in her racing – moving from Karting to Open Wheel Racing. At present, she’s participating in the Skip Barber Racing Championship Series, during which she will learn the process of shifting gears.

Her plans are to begin in the new Formula 4 series next year; in this Series, the average age is 17-19 years old, but Amy will be younger than the average. It’s not the only thing that sets her apart. “There aren’t many girls in this sport; I’ve only encountered five

in the past year,” she said. “And really not many Asian girls at all.”

However, Amy doesn’t feel those are the characteristics that set her the most apart. “You need determination, passion and commitment to be up top … to be the best. I think [my competitors] know it’s my determination that makes me different,” she said.

And although Amy loves to drive, she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty either.

Working on her kart, her dad has taught her how to rebuild carburetors and centrifugal clutches. “She loves everything about racing,” said her mom, Debbie Hollowell. “She even loves the smell of the gasoline.” Amy agreed with her mom’s assessment; however, she went on to add, “But my favorite part is going over 100mph at just an inch off the ground.”

Dave agreed. “The amount of commitment it takes is huge, but it is no different from other sports. And it is a sport,” he said.

MORE THAN A DRIVER

Being that it is a sport and treated as such, Amy trains outside the car in order to improve her driving. Her conditioning as part of the CGHS track team includes running and weightlifting, and it does double-duty to prepare her for time in the car as well. But not taking her position on the track team lightly, she’s shown her dedication to it too. Beginning in sixth grade, she began throwing discus; in her freshman year, she received a Varsity letter for it.

FAMILY COMMITMENT

As much as the family enjoys Amy’s racing, her parents did caution that it is not something to be jumped into easily or lightly.

“It is time-consuming as a family,” said her mom. “You have to be at the front of the pack and be passionate about racing; otherwise, if you’re always at the back, it’s not worth it.”

After a shoe collection and distribution last Christmas, the leadership of Bluff Creek Christian Church felt compelled that this was an on-going need in the community they should continue to serve. As a result, February 6, this 200-member congregation launched Shoes for Souls.

FOR THE WANT OF A SHOE Shoes for Souls is a “shoe pantry” located in Johnson County, and at present is the only known one in the area. Current statistics show that over one-third of school-age children in Johnson County qualify for Free or Reduced Lunches. And while there are multiple food pantries in the county to serve them and their families, Shoes for Souls is the only opportunity specifically for children and teens to receive a new pair of shoes each season.

Up to four times a year, families can take advantage of the pantry and get a new pair, or like-new pair, of shoes. With every pair of shoes that walk out the door, they are accompanied by a new a pair of socks.

SHOESTRING BUDGET After praying about the opportunity, Shaun Farmer offered to lead this innovative ministry, but he does not take credit for all the work.

“There are five of us on the team,” he said. “And there are several other congregation members who have given of their time on a Saturday to work in the pantry.”

Serving in the pantry is not the only way people can support this cause. Shoes for Souls gladly accepts donations of new and gentlyused shoes, as well as new socks. And while they accept all kinds of shoes, they have primarily focused on the more-versatile tennis shoe. “Our thinking on that is that tennis shoes can be used in any season,” said Farmer. “Other types of shoes aren’t as practical.”

Thus far, the ministry has received donations from multiple sources, but they are always able to accept more. As Shoes for Souls began taking shape in its early stages, they received an outpouring of shoes from their own congregation. Additionally, Walmart has given a sizable donation, as has The Blue Mile; The Finish Line provided a lot of socks.

One team member, Rebecca Finlay, commented on how quickly the ministry came together. “It was amazing to see the response from our church congregation and local businesses who donated shoes! It helped me see that something special was happening with this ministry…and with very little overhead costs to get it started!” she said.

ON THE RIGHT FOOT Not only concerned with shoes and socks, another need Shoes for Souls seeks to fill is through its prayer ministry. When people visit the pantry, they are asked if they have any prayer needs; the volunteers offer to pray with them there or come to their homes to pray privately.

Finlay, as the prayer coordinator for Shoes for Souls, describes her place on the team. “My role involves seeking out people who will pray for the ministry and sending specific shoe pantry prayer needs to the church members,” she explained. “I felt like God was leading me to this ministry after praying about it and considering the type of impact it could make in the community. I realized that not only could we provide for those who are in need physically and help lessen a financial burden (because new shoes for children, especially multiple children, can be expensive), but we could also meet a spiritual need as well.”

WALKING IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES “I think the community should know that we truly care about providing for the needs of our community, and want those who

have a need to feel like they can come without judgment. We want to provide an environment where people can feel comfortable, accepted and loved,” said Finlay. “We have over 500 pairs of shoes just waiting to be worn! Since we are just getting started, our biggest challenge has been spreading the word around the community to let everyone know that we are here. We know that there is a need, and I think we have felt like God has recently been opening doors for us to utilize resources around the community to get the word out.”

Shoes for Souls is open each Saturday morning from 9-12. Parents, grandparents, guardians and foster parents may all take advantage of this opportunity; teachers may also come to Shoes for Souls to receive shoes for students whom they notice have a need.

Requirements to receive shoes are a photo ID and a form that must be filled out at each visit. Families can visit the pantry up to four times a year.

With over 35 years of professional experience, Lee Cornell has set the stage in the world of ventriloquism. Combining his talents of comedy, voice, music and magic, Cornell has entertained thousands with his cast of witty characters, all the while keeping everyone thoroughly entertained.

When Cornell was 9 years old, he was bitten by the ventriloquism bug. Television variety programs, like “The Ed Sullivan Show,” often featured ventriloquists. One popular legendary ventriloquist was Jimmy Nelson. After seeing Jimmy on TV, Cornell knew he wanted to be a performer.

That year, Cornell looked through the thenpopular Sears Christmas catalog and saw a dummy he wanted (most ventriloquists use the term “dummy” or “figure” for their sidekicks).

He received that dummy and a magic kit as gifts which allowed him to combine two skills.

The dummy came with an instructional record album by Mr. Nelson, and Cornell learned from that record. At age 13, he was on his way, getting paid for his first performance, and as they say, the rest is history.

A TRICK OF THE EAR Thanks to popular shows such as “America’s Got Talent,” ventriloquism has made a big comeback. By entertaining audiences around the globe, ventriloquists use dummies as tools to make people laugh. Explaining that your hearing is the “easiest sense to trick,” Cornell says that almost anyone can pick up this art form and make it their own by practicing, having clever characters, comedic storylines and overall making a connection with their audience.

After years of performing, Cornell wanted to provide additional resources for those interested in the art of ventriloquism. In 1997, he became interested in the then-new Internet.

With an idea from his wife Cheryl, Cornell used his college degree in TV and Broadcasting and spent three months producing his “Ventriloquism 101” video, which teaches the art to everyday people.

He launched a simple one-page website. This course has evolved from a VHS tape to a DVD to a downloadable version. In its early days, Cornell put ads in The Linking Ring (the magazine of the International Brotherhood of Magicians) to attract customers.

Calls and checks started to come in.

To this day, his website, ventriloquism101.com, is one of the top 10 ventriloquist sites in the world and has grown from one static page to a site that includes many products and services. He also runs his performance site, leecornellshow.com, for a more holistic look at all of Cornell’s talents, clients and associations. Here you can find how to book shows for banquets, corporate events, parties and private events. Cornell also keeps students and followers informed by writing a blog at ventips.blogspot.com.

Cornell’s family life technically started when he met his wife, Cheryl, when he was 19. Their initial meeting at work was memorable, but they lost touch.

Fifteen years later, they met again while out with friends, and this time, they stayed in touch. A few years later, they were married.

Now a family man, Cornell is a father to a 20-year-old daughter, Heather, who graduated from Center Grove High School and attends Purdue, and a 16-year-old son, Austin, who is a junior at Center Grove. Cheryl is a hairdresser, and the two have been married 23 years.

children were in school. He has worked as a Technology Consultant for 19 years. This allowed him to be home for his children’s sports, band and school activities, all the while keeping his ventriloquist website going on evenings and weekends.

ONE OF THE GANG Every year in July, Cornell attends the annual Vent Haven ventriloquist convention near Cincinnati, Ohio. “It is a highlight of my year as I get to see old friends, and it is exciting to help get new talent started,” he explained. Each year, about 600 “vents” attend, and it is a gathering of like-minded talented people – some the largest names in the industry – and everyone is friends.

“People at the convention are so approachable, no matter what level, unlike stars in some industries,” Cornell stated. Near the convention site is the Vent Haven museum, venthavenmuseum. com. This historic and one-of-a-kind museum houses more than 800 dummies.

If you live in the unincorporated Johnson County area and have a problem requiring law enforcement, your first line of protection is the Johnson County Sheriff ’s Office, despite your Greenwood address.

Many are not aware of this fact or what the Sheriff ’s office does to protect the community every day.

That protection starts at the top with Doug Cox, Johnson County Sheriff. Cox is a lifelong resident of Johnson County. He started his career with the Franklin Police Department, coming to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. Cox has served in the Sheriff’s office totaling 35 years with five of those years being Sheriff for Johnson County.

He currently has two and a half years remaining in his second term as Sheriff. “I will be retiring from the Sheriff 's Office when my second term expires December 31, 2018,” said Cox.

HOW IS HE PAID?

Cox’s salary is determined by state statute. In a county with an excess of 100,000 citizens, the Sheriff ’s salary is to be set as a percentage of the Prosecutor’s salary. For 2015, his salary is set at $123,356.

In years past, Cox said, Sheriffs did receive extra funds from meal monies or tax warrants, but he does not receive funds for any of those activities.

By Indiana statute, the Sheriff ’s office is responsible for maintaining the jail, serving warrants and serving civil process papers.

The Sheriff ’s office employs approximately 150 people, divided into five different departments. These departments include enforcement, individuals who are road officers; investigations;

corrections; reserves; and civilian employees, including cooks, administrative assistants and others.

“Most of our enforcement manpower is in the White River area because that is where most of our runs occur,” said Cox. Most residents are not aware, but the Sheriff ’s office actually has quite the working relationship with the Greenwood Police

local level and be put in treatment programs to try and get them to stop repeat offending, he said. This would require them to go into our Community Corrections program here in Johnson County.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing people who can't follow the rules who are violating in large numbers,” said Cox. “Those people do not go back to the Department of Corrections. If they violate the program, they come to my jail. This is the reason we are seeing our jail numbers jump recently.”

Thirty-nine inmates are in the jail as a result of this law, said Cox. A long-term goal for the county is to build a new Community Corrections Center, said Cox. Space does not allow for room for classes or treatment for inmates, just housing. The County is looking to build a new Community Corrections Center.

“When I started at the Sheriff 's Office in 1987, it was not uncommon for the Sheriff 's Office personnel to tell the Greenwood Police Department personnel to stay out of our jurisdiction and vice versa,” said Cox.

“Land was donated by the Hospital here in Franklin to the county,” said Cox. “Unfortunately, Franklin's Planning and Zoning board will not allow the facility to be built on that parcel of land, so we are back trying to find a spot for the new Community Corrections Center at a time where my jail population continues to grow with no relief in sight.”

However, relations are much different today. “When we need each other’s help, we don't hesitate to ask,” said Cox.

Only time will tell how the chips will fall, but Cox is confident that they will eventually be able to acquire this new and improved center.

The territory the Sheriff ’s office covers has changed throughout the years, said Cox. They have lost areas they covered in White River Township to annexation by the Town of Bargersville and the City of Greenwood. Cox is curious to see if the I-69 construction will affect this as well.

JAIL CROWDING A CONCERN

The main area of concern for the Sheriff ’s office involves population management in jail, said Cox. The jail’s capacity is at 322 beds. The problem? Currently, they have 337 inmates in the jail.

“The State Legislature passed House Bill 1006 recently that moved people out of the State Prisons for Class "D" and "C" felonies and pushed those people back to the local communities. This has caused a problem here in Johnson County,” said Cox. Johnson County was in the top five of Indiana counties sending people to the Department of Corrections for Class "D" and "C" felonies. Here it is, the end of summer, and many kids are preparing to go back This may be a short-term interest, maybe not. But I did tell my guys to school in a couple weeks. In the last week and a half, I have seen more to always be together and be aware of their surroundings. Despite children outside walking than I did the entire rest of the summer. the news regarding crimes against players of Pokémon Go and people getting hurt from not being alert, I still want my boys to play.

The term Pokémon Walks has been coined in our household. Since the game came out, the boys want to go walk around and find Pokémon.

The other night, we went downtown to have dinner. The boys wanted to play Pokémon Go, and even their dad had downloaded it. I was skeptical, but after a while, the boys convinced me to download it and join in the fun.

In a couple of hours, I had collected many Pokémon. I moved from level to level, and by the time the night was done, I was at level 6.

Now, this is not an acknowledgment of my interest to keep playing long-term, but there certainly were some benefits.

One benefit was the interaction with the boys and to know exactly what they were doing. I was witness to the two collaborating and trying to determine which path to take to get to the next Poké-stop.

Another benefit is that they were outdoors. Most of the games my boys have played are on the Xbox console. That is definitely one system for sitting indoors and playing alone or with friends.

Pokémon Go requires one to go outside and explore.

As a family, how often can you play the same game and spend time together without an argument ensuing? This is not like other games where you would be attempting to beat an opponent. It’s a good blend of individual fun in a group setting.

As a mom, it makes my heart happy to see them get outdoors, hear them help each other and be excited for their captures as well as see them just get along. These are the moments that help build and strengthen their relationship ahead of adulthood.
