FALL

YOUR LOCAL GUIDE TO ALL THINGS FALL Writer / Elizabeth Choi Photography Provided

FALL FOR BROWN COUNTY

Brown County is to fall as pumpkin is to pie. Those who have been there understand that the two just go together. Brown County is one of the least populated counties in Indiana, and has more treecovered land than any other county in the state. The fall foliage in Brown County is nothing short of spectacular. The best time to visit for the brightest, most colorful leaves is generally the second or third week of October. Take in fall foliage while picnicking in Brown County State Park or while strolling through the town of Nashville. Downtown Nashville has more than 100 unique shops like Jack & Jill Nut Shoppe, featuring homemade fudge, and nuts roasted

in-house. Stop by Lawrence Family Glass Blowers. Here you can watch glass blowers in action and shop an assortment of original and detailed glass products. There are also dozens of restaurants to choose from. The nearly 95-year-old Nashville House, which recently reopened, is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Known for homemade fried biscuits and apple butter, the Nashville House now serves beer and wine, and offers outdoor seating. Brown County is also home to a variety of fall festivities. The “Slightly Haunted Puppet Show,” and “Ghost Stories Under the October Sky,” are ideal for those seeking a scare. The Brown County State Park will offer hayrides. This year’s Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival will include the Uncle Pen Festival, jam packed with music, camping and lots of fun.

Tip: Contact the Brown County Visitors Center before your visit, to learn more about what’s happening ahead of your trip. You can reach the Visitors Center at 812-988-7303, or via email at visitorscenter@ browncounty.com. You can also view a calendar of events at browncounty.com.

FALL FESTIVALS

Parke County Covered Bridge Festival: October 8-17. This is one of the state’s largest festivals, and features crafts and food. You’ll find 31 historic covered bridges. It is headquartered at the courthouse lawn in Rockville, and there are several other locations throughout the county. Each location offers something unique, like the town of Montezuma, which will have a hog roast. At Bridgeton you can find a gristmill, the 1878 House, a schoolhouse from 1925,

and a variety of vendors. Metamora Canal Days Autumn Festival: October 1-3. Located in Metamora Township along the Whitewater Canal, this is a small town with a population of less than 200 people according to a 2010 census. The town is reliant on tourism. The festival’s slogan is “If you can’t find it at Metamora’s Canal Days, you don’t need it.” The three-day event includes a flea market, art, antiques, handmade crafts and food. Oktoberfest: October 9-11. The German American Klub of Indianapolis is hosting its 47th annual Oktoberfest in German Park, located on the south side of Indianapolis. New at this year’s festival will be a large tent with seating set up to accommodate

18 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

any weather, as well as even more inflatables for the children. Oktoberfest is known for its live music, dancing and German food, as well as the Edelweiss Restaurant and MashCraft Biergarten. Admission is $5 per person - a price that has not changed in more than 20 years. Hoosier Fall Festival: October 16-17. This is a kid-friendly event located at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. There will be amusement rides, an exotic petting zoo, vendors and live entertainment.

PUMPKIN PICKIN’ AND MORE

The Apple Works: A family favorite in Johnson County, The Apple Works is located in Trafalgar and features a U-pick pumpkin patch.

It holds extended hours in the fall. On weekends expect live music and food trucks, as well as train, pony and wagon rides. Also check out Old McDonald’s Farm. Homemade baked goods and apple cider can be purchased in the country store. Adrian Orchards: Family owned and operated since 1925, Adrian Orchards is a convenient place for pumpkin picking, homemade apple cider, and more. Adrian’s is located on the south side, the orchard nearest the heart of Indianapolis. Waterman’s Family Farm: Waterman’s has two locations in Greenwood and Indy. Its Indy location hosts the Fall Harvest Festival with a corn maze, a hayride, Tyranny the pumpkinchomping dinosaur, food vendors and more. The Greenwood

location opens in October. There you can purchase pumpkins, apple cider and other fall treats. Anderson Orchard: Fall is a big time of the year at Anderson Orchard. Along with a U-pick pumpkin patch and hayrides, the orchard puts on two festivals throughout September and October. The Apple Festival and Craft Fair takes place September 25 and 26. More than 80 crafters will be set up, along with Dashboard Diner and its famous tenderloins and root beer. October Fest is a kid-friendly event taking place October 2 and 3. You can expect five inflatables, a trampoline, a train ride, face painting and a petting zoo. Kelsay Farms: Experience a working farm! Get outside and enjoy the fresh air by visiting a 6th generation family farm. Get lost in the corn maze, sit by a campfire, enjoy a signature farm milkshake, play in the corn, bounce on the jump pad, and climb Bale Mountain. Kelsay Farms is open Oct. 1-31 on weekends. Group events and field trips can be scheduled by emailing tours@kelsayfarms.com.

A LITTLE FRIGHTENING… A LOT OF FUN

Hanna Haunted Acres: With one location and six terrifying attractions, including names like the Blood Barn, Hanna Haunted Acres is located in Franklin Township and also features a hayride and haunted mazes. Tickets are available for late September through October.

Let Us Take It From Here!

ZooBoo: Here’s a chance to check out the animals at the Indianapolis Zoo when they are more active due to cooler weather. ZooBoo will feature a friendly witch who concocts special edible potions, a train ride, a live DJ and more. Kids are encouraged to wear costumes. Frightful Frontier Haunted House: The Children’s Museum Guild’s 57th Annual Haunted House has two options - lightson hours (for kids who are easily scared) and lights-off hours (for kids who are looking for a fright). Take a ride through the Frightful Frontier, where your child is sure to encounter the goblins and monsters of the wicked west.

TASTE OF EXCELLENCE ELLA’S FROZEN YOGURT OWNERS PASS THE TORCH Writer / Judy Clodfelter Photography Provided

“Faith, Family, and Froyo” may be a slogan that soon appears on the walls of Ella’s Frozen Yogurt & Candy Shop according to Allison Stewart, who, along with her husband Chad, is the new proprietor of the Greenwood business previously owned by visionaries Greg and Lorrie Gray. “Our faith, followed by family, are the most important things in our life, and what we are most devoted to,” Allison says. “Ultimately, when our time on earth is done, our legacy will be a reflection on those things.” Chad, who works for Cook Medical, and Allison, who works in pharmaceutical sales for Regeneron, are not strangers to the Center Grove area. Along with their three boys, Hudson, 14, Harper, 9, and Hendrix, 4, they have resided here since 2008 and are an active part of the community. Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi parish drew the Stewarts to the southside. Chad felt a sense of community the minute they entered the church. “We were welcomed from day one,” he says. “People recognized us not as regulars. They saw us for the first time and came up right away.” Indeed, many have become supportive friends and mentors for Chad as he steps into the role of a business owner. Having a strong faith and sense of community are values shared by the Grays. “Center Grove is a big area with a smalltown feel,” Lorrie says. “It is a faith-based community where everyone supports each other. Ella’s is known throughout the area, and people have been praying for our TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 23

business for over 10 years. We ran Ella’s to reflect and honor Christ.” Lorrie feels that Chad and Allison are younger versions of herself and Greg. “Handing off Ella’s is like a relay,” Lorrie says. “We are handing it off to the Stewarts, who are known and local. We want the best for them, and we want the best for Ella’s. We all have the same high standards. Owning a business was a lifelong goal of Greg’s, and we want it to succeed.” Business ownership was also a dream shared by Chad, who worked at his grandparents’ car dealership in Canada and envisioned taking it over one day. “At a young age, I mopped floors, took out trash and just wanted to be there,” Chad says. “My parents owned real estate, and it has always been something I’ve had in the back of my mind for a long time.” After looking into some other opportunities, a friend mentioned to Chad that Ella’s was for sale. They were getting ready to sign the papers when the unexpected happened the pandemic. While COVID paused the Stewarts’ acquisition, the Grays made sure the doors remained open. “We adapted,” Lorrie says. “We did patio pickup and tried to be as creative as we could be. We prayed like crazy and had an incredible, loyal customer base that helped us succeed.” On July 1, 2021, the sale became final and the

Stewarts officially took over. “It’s a mom-and-pop business,” Chad says. “The loyalty of their customers is humbling. It has become a piece of the community. They have done a great job getting it to this point the last 10 to 11 years. We want to continue to sustain it and grow it. We think it’s a great product, and we’d love to expand its reach.”

“We have an extraordinary product and extraordinary service,” Lorrie says. “Our employees have been exceptional. Many are high school students. This is a great first job for them. They define Ella’s and set the tone for what Ella’s is all about.” The Stewarts couldn’t agree more. “We are keeping it tried-and-true to its solid foundation,” Chad says. “The Grays have hired great people, and the manager and assistant manager have stayed on. They are a huge piece of the puzzle. Even Greg has continued to offer his help. How often do you see that?”

“Spending time with our five grandchildren is our priority now in retirement, but Ella’s will always be a part of us and so will the Stewart family,” Greg says. “That’s what this community is all about.” Ella’s is located at 520 State Road 135 A in Greenwood. Taste of Home

O U R TA B LE A MERIC A N BI STRO TO OPEN IN B ARG ERS VILLE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

Growing up, Joe Miller spent Sundays gabbing around the table while eating meals with his parents and five siblings. His wife Ginger, who also comes from a big family, did the same thing during her childhood. It’s the way Sundays used to be for a lot of us, but life’s pace has quickened through the years, causing those precious moments to get lost in the shuffle. The couple, now with five kids of their own, aged 5 to 12, have spent their marriage dreaming of a way to recreate those special weekend memories for families.

For some time, the couple had toyed with the idea of opening up their own restaurant. In November of 2019 Joe left Meridian Hills, and the idea become a reality. Then life threw a curveball in the form of a global pandemic. As eager as they were to get their restaurant rolling, they were forced to pump the brakes. Joe was offered an opportunity to work just 10 minutes down the road at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking, making daily lunches and dinners. The laid-back schedule afforded the pair the time to find the perfect location for their restaurant, which they named Our Table American Bistro. “Naming the restaurant was like naming our sixth baby,” Ginger says. “We decided on this one because it felt at home, as far as what we wanted to offer the community. It’s what we offer at our house, at our table.”

Joe, an Indianapolis native, has worked in the restaurant and catering industry ever since he was 14. After enrolling in Ivy Tech’s culinary hospitality program, he was connected with Chef Alex Darvishi, former chef at Meridian Hills Country Club. Joe Their vision is to get families and friends back around the table. became his apprentice, working his way up to sous-chef and executive chef. He worked at the club for 20-plus years. “People are eager to just sit around a table again and commune,” Joe says. “It got to a point where I was ready for our new chapter,” Joe says. When selecting a location, they were originally considering Old

Town Greenwood, but then their business partners and family members Laura and Ken Fikes led them to a brand-new building that was available in Bargersville. After a great meeting with the owner, Mike Duke of Duke Homes, they knew it was right where they were supposed to be. The stone fireplace, walnut bar and other furnishings provide a warm, inviting, upscale feel. “We want to be something different,” Joe says. “I don’t think

the southside is craving another pub. We’re looking to tap into that place that’s missing - a place where you can get chefcrafted specials including fresh Florida grouper, grilled lamb chops and fresh oysters to name a few. I’m excited to give that to Bargersville.” Joe adds that he’ll be making handmade artisan flatbreads from a recipe he’s used for many years. Also on the menu is

a caprese salad served with warm, crusty bread, and a grilled salmon fillet. Though not a steakhouse, the restaurant will offer a signature fillet, and char-crusted beef tenderloin sliders on toasted brioche buns with horseradish-garlic aioli and crispy Vidalia onion strings. They have a private dining room that offers a boutique winery vibe. “We want people to be able to come here with their children, but we still offer that Napa wine country, laid-back feel,” Ginger says. During the peak of the pandemic there was a spike in takeout, but dine-in business has slowly returned for eateries. “There’s nothing like that warm feeling you get when you walk into a restaurant for a great meal and memorable experience,” says Joe, who enjoys what he calls the “organized chaos” of being a chef. “I like the whole dance in the kitchen when it all comes together and everything is operating smoothly. Then I get to see people enjoying what my team and I made them, and that keeps me going.” Though owning a restaurant means long hours, Joe and Ginger aren’t complaining one bit. “Yes, I put in a lot of hours, but my kids can be standing right next to me in my own kitchen,” Joe says. The children, all of whom offer their two cents when it comes to menu items, like to help out in their own kitchen any chance they get. “On Sunday Joe made homemade focaccia bread and they helped, recognizing that it’s better than the grocery store bread,” Ginger says. Our Table American Bistro is located at 5080 North State Road 135 in Bargersville, and opens in October. For more information, visit ourtablerestaurant.com.

on Kephart Park. It will be the newest addition to the Parks and Recreation department for the town, and will feature walking trails, an outdoor event center and a future community center. This year work will also begin on trails connecting Kephart Park and surrounding new neighborhoods to existing parks and downtown Bargersville. Other parks in town include the newly renovated Windisch Park, Switzer Park and Witt Park. This year work began on the final section of the Interstate 69 expansion, which will include an interchange at Bargersville. In preparation for new restaurants serving increased traffic near the interstate, the town leaders recently created a riverfront district to encourage growth and development in the area. In the coming years, look out for new eating and drinking options near Interstate 69 and throughout the town.

New restaurants will complement the award-winning offerings already available to residents and visitors. Taxman Brewing Company and Johnson’s BBQ Shack have begun expansions. Mallow Run Winery offers popular outdoor concerts throughout the summer as well.

The town hosts its own events throughout the year. Preparations are already underway for 2022 summer concerts and the return of the Harvest Moon Fall Festival. Bargersville is also a popular stop for the Santa Train by the Indiana Rail Road. In the spring, the Easter Bunny makes a visit to the town at

an event featuring an Easter egg hunt and pancake breakfast. When choosing a location to open a business or build your family, we hope you consider the Town of Bargersville.

or the first time in 15 years, the First Internet Bank Home-A-Rama event will take place on the southside of Indianapolis, spotlighting an innovative neighborhood in Bargersville called Aberdeen. A Duke Homes community, Aberdeen is Indiana’s first-ever wellness lifestyle community featuring hiking trails, an orchard, a vegetable garden, a pumpkin patch, flowers, and a pasture for animals. According to Mike Duke, president and principal for Bargersvillebased Duke Homes, the company planned the neighborhood for 15 years and staff members were thrilled to see it come to fruition. “We were trying to be thoughtful about creating something that was ongoing, in the sense that it’s not just a community to join but a place where the natural beauty of the land stands out by tying in that agricultural component,” Mike says. Steve Lains, chief executive officer at the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI), maintains that from an industry standpoint, the pandemic has

encouraged homeowners to find a sense of place in developments. That’s precisely why he believes Aberdeen will entice people now more than ever. “The day of pulling your car into the garage, shutting the door and never seeing your neighbors is gone,” Lains says. “That’s all changed as development communities have adapted their way of connecting people and

neighbors with where they live and what they do.” Programmed activities, as well as ample woods, green spaces, sports courts, and community buildings for exercise classes, provide opportunities to socialize with neighbors and enjoy the benefits of outdoor spaces. For instance, nature hikes around the 100-plus acres of green space allow

neighbors to enjoy fellowship, fauna and fresh air. Aberdeen also offers planned community events such as lakeside sunrise yoga as well as wine tasting. In November the neighborhood will host a “Thanks & Giving” event that will give back to the community. The Dukes also created the Aberdeen Foundation, and for every lot that’s sold, $500 goes to the foundation to help assist local food deserts in the county.

organizers are carrying over from last year due to COVID-19 is the hybrid tour, which includes both in-person and virtual attendance. Due to capacity limitations last year, they had to limit ticket sales. Though that’s not the case this year, they learned that spacing out tour times for attendees worked great, as it spread out the traffic, ensuring no congestion in the houses or problems

with parking. They are doing the same this year, and those attending show up in hour increments with ticket prices ranging from $10 to $30. Those who buy a physical ticket will have virtual access as well. “[The virtual tour] was exceedingly popular for those who couldn’t attend the show for health or physical reasons,” Lains says.

When selecting a site for Home-A-Rama, BAGI leaders strive to show innovative home construction in terms of technology and design, as well as cutting-edge trends on the development side. This year’s Home-ARama, which will take place on Thursdays through Sundays from September 16 through October 3, will feature local vendors such as Mallow Run Winery and Taxman Brewing Company, as well as local restaurant vendors and food trucks. The Duke team will also give guided tours of the features and the development itself. A popular experience Home-A-Rama

This lifestyle community trend has been occurring in other parts of the country already.

“What you see with Aberdeen is people in different stages of life or affordability who are now able to live together in the same community,” Lains says. “We tried to be thoughtful about creating a place where residents can be connected to one another and connected to nature,” adds Isaac Duke, Vice President of Duke Homes. “We think when those things happen,

there is greater opportunity for people to care for one another. That’s all gone into the thought process of how we have crafted the development, the amenities, and the ongoing activities and spaces within the community.” Sections 1, 2, and 3 of Aberdeen are now open, and reservations are being taken for 4 and 5. Ultimately, the community will include at least 278 homes sites on close to 400 acres, 100 of which are wooded and green common spaces.

38 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

This year’s Home-A-Rama includes five builders and six homes, all fully landscaped and decorated. Each house includes multiple “wow factors” - from dramatic staircase entries to jaw-dropping outdoor living spaces. In addition, every home includes a view of a water feature, nature area or both. Whether you’re in the market to build or remodel a home and want to learn about the

latest trends and products, or you’re interested in checking out the latest and greatest inhome decor, the show has something for everyone. Earlier this spring, when houses were still under construction, Aberdeen and BAGI hosted the “Dusty Boots Home Tour” to give 325 people a preview, and Mike was at the front gate greeting every single person.

“We’re excited for potential residents to see Aberdeen, but also excited about what it means for the town, the greater community and local businesses, because we’re creating a community here,” Isaac says. “We want it to extend into the local community and benefit everyone in this area.” Home-A-Rama will take place Thursdays through Sundays from September 16 through October 3, from noon until 7 p.m. To order

else that touches our daily lives, have seen a revival in the importance of feeding both our emotional and physical needs.

Trends in home design and decor are often impacted by the world outside our collective front door. After experiencing the uncertainty and unknowns of the past 18 months, we as a global community have depended more intensively on our homes as a place of refuge and calm. Our homes have also become more multifunctional than ever before, as many continue to depend on their home as an office, school, gym and place to entertain family.

“This extended time at home has impacted every aspect of current home design trends, from the color on the wall, to the reworking of a home’s floor plan to allow for multi-use of spaces, to the creative blending of indoor-outdoor living spaces as a way to increase useable square footage,” says Regina Salas, architectural designer for Duke Homes.

As a result, design trends, like everything

While daily life has resumed with some sense of normalcy, there is still a demand for homes to serve multiple uses that originated during the pandemic

quarantine. With many still working or attending school remotely, homeowners are seeking custom home designs that provide for multiple home offices, separate areas for student study and school space, home fitness and sport areas, as well as dedicated arts and craft spaces. As a result, homes are being designed or renovated to be multifunctional with large open spaces for family and entertaining, while also providing private, cozy individual spaces for work and retreat. “The desire to find refuge and calm in our homes is also reflected in the move away from cooler, harsher color palettes and towards warmer, softer tones in both wall

colors and furnishings,” Salas says. While warm neutrals are still popular, beige is the new black, with cream following closely at its heels. This color trend carries over into the lighter wood tones of flooring and furnishings, as well as the move towards more use of natural fibers. When bold colors are used on walls, furniture or fabrics, it is a nod towards nostalgia, with patterns and colors you might find in your grandmother’s home. This “grandmillennial” or “granny chic” trend is an outward expression of our longing for a time when we felt warm, cared for and comforted. “Granny chic” can be seen in the use of modern decor mixed with vintage touches like antique art, chintz and floral wallpaper and fabrics, as well as classic but whimsical accent pieces to create a homey feeling. For those who prefer a more cutting-edge element to the design of their home, smart homes with technology-driven features are increasing in popularity. High-tech homes allow the homeowner to control features from an application on their phone or tablet. This goes

beyond just controlling the home’s thermostat. Today everything from lights, window blinds, door locks, appliances, faucets, security systems, and even the temperature of a pool or hot tub can be controlled with a few taps on a screen. Smart-home features are popular with homeowners who have a penchant for tech, and those hoping to reduce their carbon footprint by saving energy on heating, cooling and electrical use, especially when away from home. “Building a smart home can also include building with eco-friendly, sustainable and locally sourced materials,” Salas says. These building materials can include

recycled materials and those that limit the amount of off-gassing of chemicals, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Off-gassing occurs when building materials and furnishings release vapors or gasses into the air of a home that were previously contained in a liquid or solid form. These vapors can be released from paints, stains, glues and carpets. Off-gassing can aggravate illnesses like asthma, and result in allergic reactions and a host of other reactions. The Duke Homes staff specifically sources building materials that avoid products with VOCs, and has increased the use of heating and cooling systems that work to refresh a home’s interior air with filtered and preconditioned fresh air from

outside the home. “Duke Homes is also focused on sourcing building materials with a high insulation or R-value, Energy Star-rated appliances, energy-efficient doors and windows, and tankless water heaters that heat a homeowner’s water on demand,” Salas says. Another current design trend is the increased demand for creating connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces. This is

achieved through design elements such as expansive, operable glass walls that blur the line between the indoors and out, and allow for extended outdoor living space. Outdoor living spaces are also incorporating features such as interior living walls, container gardens and hydroponic gardens that allow the homeowner to enjoy the farm-to-table aspect of a small herb, vegetable or fruit garden.

DOWNTOWN VISION COMING INTO FOCUS FOR GREENWOOD

with a population now steadily approaching 60,000 residents - double that of 25 years ago.

Story Provided by City of Greenwood Photography Provided by Brandi Caplinger & the City of Greenwood

Throughout the past decade, the City of Greenwood has worked to establish and implement a vision for Old Town as a vibrant and diverse destination featuring residential, restaurant, retail and office development, including enhanced streetscapes and optimal pedestrian connectivity to surrounding parks, trails and other public assets. Since the establishment of a new vision for downtown in 2014, quality-of-life improvements throughout the city have skyrocketed, along with the addition of more than 80 companies and nearly 4,000 new jobs. Greenwood is now the fourth fastest-growing city in the state,

$83 Million Development Bringing More to Downtown Just this year, Greenwood leaders realized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to further advance their vision, and transform Old Town for current and future generations. With the vacancy of the former middle school property located downtown at 523 South Madison Avenue, the city broke ground on the 19-acre property and announced plans for the development, which will include retail and office space, new multifamily and single-family housing, and enhanced public spaces and

streetscapes. The new development marks an important milestone in efforts to revitalize Old Town, ensuring its future as a thriving core that is walkable and connected to trails, parks and dynamic public gathering spaces. This lively people-centric evolvement hasn’t been the only project on the City of Greenwood’s agenda. By driving community engagement through a collective sense of place, Greenwood has been proudly working on the following developments, which spread over 100 acres and serve as critical components of Greenwood’s downtown resurgence: Amphitheater: Recently renovated in

2017 with waterway terracing and new trail configurations, the Greenwood Amphitheater reigns as the area’s premier outdoor music venue. The Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department hosts approximately 10 events there annually, including a free summer concert series with local and regional acts, as well as a lighted holiday trail. Thousands of residents and visitors flock to the amphitheater year-round for these events and others, sponsored by local churches and businesses. Art on the Trail: The Art on the Trail program on the Polk Hill Trail continues to grow. The program puts the spotlight on select artists from around the country in the city’s own backyard. As additional artwork continues to be installed, residents and visitors are encouraged to take a stroll or bike ride through the outdoor gallery near the downtown area. Event Lawn: Recently completed and located in Craig Park, Greenwood added 100,000 square feet of open space to develop an event lawn with a permanent stage pad. The event lawn can host more than 20,000 spectators, and now anchors Greenwood’s Freedom Festival, Sertoma Club’s WAMMfest, and other musical and cultural events for residents and visitors alike. Greenwood Community Center: Undergoing its first renovation since 1992, the Community Center was completely reimagined in 2017 and now hosts Kid City, a two-story, year-round indoor play zone for children, with STEAM-focused activity centers that incorporate a variety of educational themes and a prized Luckey Climber. Seeking to be more inclusive in recreational opportunities, Kid City leaders began hosting Sensory-Friendly Fridays in 2019. The Gym is a modernized adult workout area featuring separate, spacious environments for fitness and yoga classes, and the latest in cardiovascular and weightlifting equipment. The Courts host basketball, volleyball and pickleball players of all ages. The Greenwood Community Center has more than 2,500 members and 50 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

welcomes thousands of visitors annually through day passes, and adult and youth programming. Greenwood Fieldhouse: The former Greenwood Middle School is being redeveloped into the Greenwood Fieldhouse, which will open later this fall. The fieldhouse will be a year-round recreational and fitness center for residents and will serve as a destination for youth sports teams. It will be equipped to host a variety of sports including volleyball, futsal, badminton, soccer, baseball, basketball and pickleball. Key features include golf simulators, an elevated running and walking track, multi-purpose turf fields and more. Madison Avenue: The Madison Avenue project provides a significant transformation of one of the city’s major north-south corridors. Initial work on the project, which encompassed the portion of Madison Avenue between Pearl and Noble streets, was completed in late 2018. The second phase of the project stretches north to Fry Road and adds an enhanced multiuse trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, marked pedestrian crosswalks, and several streetscape improvements. Old City Park: Open since last fall and located in the heart of downtown, Old City Park is a world-class park featuring a playscape plaza, event lawn, fitness circuit, bocce court and native prairie meadow. The playscape plaza is home to a 20’ triple cube tower, which is the first of its kind in Indiana and one of only three in the country.

Old City Park also contains other permanent outdoor games, a climbing wall with elevated landings and custom hillside climbing nets, a double pipe slide, urban porch swings and other modern playground amenities. Pickleball Courts: Pickleball has taken the nation by storm as the fastest-growing sport, and in 2020 the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department built three additional pickleball courts in one of Greenwood’s most popular parks, Craig Park, bringing the total court count to seven in the complex. The courts are home to the annual Greenwood Pickleball Open, welcoming more than 100 participants each year. On any given day, players of all ages use these courts during the park season. Pickleball courts are also available at the Greenwood Community Center and will be available at the Greenwood Fieldhouse. These developments and public amenities are just a glimpse into all the City of Greenwood has to offer. “I could not be prouder of the strides made

by Greenwood’s Parks and Recreation Department, especially this past year,” says Rob Taggart, executive director of Greenwood Parks and Recreation. “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we worked tirelessly to shift, adapt and provide safe programs and events to residents. Now, we are beyond eager to welcome residents and visitors back to our old and new facilities, like Old City Park, with a renewed sense of energy and purpose.” While many of the improvements beautify the city and encourage residents to become more active, they represent thoughtful and meaningful progress for a city on the move. “In Greenwood, we believe the quality of life offered to our citizens is a direct reflection of who we are as a city,” says Mayor Mark W. Myers. “Our public assets show we value family, community and quality of life for our residents. Our investments are already producing returns to our residents through rising property values and the addition of state-of-the-art public amenities.”

Navigating Medicare might sound like a nightmare to some, but for Jess and Sandra Carrasquillo, it’s a labor of love. They help seniors understand the process so that they may make educated decisions about their future healthcare needs. The husband-andwife duo, who own Easy Street Insurance, have been working in the health insurance industry for more than two decades. OXI FRESH CARPET CLEANING they think of steam cleaning where water is poured into the carpet, and then sucked back out,” says Owner Corry Stalcup. “This seems effective because you can see the dirty water coming out, but this can damage the padding and when it’s humid, it takes much longer to dry. That can lead to a world of problems, including mold.”

“Oxi Fresh attaches enzymes to dirt that breaks down the binding proteins, and then encapsulates the dirt with molecules, enabling a machine to lift out the grime. It’s safe for pets and children especially with our sanitary practices — all technicians wear gloves and masks, machines are disinfected and brushes are switched out between jobs. Each night brushes are sterilized for the next day.”

Oxi Fresh Carpet Cleaning beautifies and freshens rugs, upholstery and other surfaces without a soggy after-effect. Traditional methods use 40 to 50 gallons of water while cleaning which saturate materials and typically take at least a day or more to fully dry. Contrast that with chemistry-based Oxi Fresh, their method uses about 10% of that and leaves the cleaned area dry in about an hour. “When most people think of carpet cleaning,

Stalcup has lived on the southside since 2000. He and his wife Kelly moved to Center Grove four years ago. As the father of two teenagers and a toddler, Stalcup feels it was the right step to take. “I love the southside and the Center Grove area,” he says. “The school system here was a huge draw. My son Brayden is a senior and my daughter Avery is a sophomore at Center Grove High School.” After living through the downsizing of two companies, Stalcup opened an Oxi Fresh franchise as a way to be in control of his own employment options and achieve some longterm family goals.

“My eyes were opened to the lack of loyalty in corporate America,” Stalcup says. “Even people who have stellar performance reviews and longevity with a company can be let go on a whim. I did not want to be beholden to a business where my future was uncertain, so I talked with a career counselor. He came back to me with a handful of options and one was Oxi Fresh. “After learning about their business and growth model, plus the technology used, I felt it was a good fit for me,” Stalcup adds. “Since we opened, we’ve seen tremendous growth while maintaining the highest levels of customer service. We could not be more excited for the future.” Prices are dependent on the areas being cleaned. Quotes for commercial jobs are given after an onsite visit. Residential prices are given over the phone according to the number of rooms, stairways and hallways. No other costs are added on after the quote is finalized. Customers can take advantage of specials which are ongoing. “We are actually a service company that cleans carpets. Each employee is carefully selected and thoroughly vetted. We want the very best people in our customer’s home,” Stalcup says. Visit OxiFresh.com to schedule an appointment or call 1-877-OXIFRESH for more information.

CAREER CAPSTONE ERIC MOORE SELECTED FOR INDIANA FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

Writer / Kevin Conrad Photography Provided

Some coaches are good. Some are great. And then there are elite coaches like Eric Moore of Center Grove High School (CGHS). What Moore has constructed in his 22 years as the lead architect of the Trojan football program is nothing short

of a masterpiece. Under his leadership, CGHS has won three state titles and three state runner-ups. That’s six rings. Moore has added another ring to his collection an Indiana Football Hall of Fame ring. It’s a ring that symbolizes the culmination of a lot of hard work by many. “[CGHS football] Assistant Coach Joe

Siderewicz called me and wanted to be the first one to tell me that I would be in the Hall of Fame,” Eric says. “I was excited but it was so humbling, to think people thought that much of the work you had done. I immediately thought about every coach that had worked with me, from Florida to Indiana. They are all responsible for this. Then I went to the

players. If you don’t have the Jimmies and Joes, you aren’t going to get the Xs and Os. We have accomplished everything you could probably accomplish in high school football. It has taken a lot of work, but it has been very, very rewarding. Sharing it with my family was probably the most gratifying. My wife has allowed me to coach, with her dedication and sacrifice of everything to raise our three great kids.” Retired Hall of Fame Coach Bill Siderewicz from Martinsville High School has followed the Trojan football program closely. His son Joe is Moore’s top offensive assistant coach, and his grandson Joey was the quarterback for Moore’s 2015 state championship team. Bill Siderewicz says Moore’s program is successful year after year because he has the engagement and support of the community. “Eric’s program has to be the number-one program going in the state right now,” Bill Siderewicz says. “I haven’t seen a program that has it all together from first grade on up. His program has lasted over time with final fours, runner-ups and state titles. He’s definitely a top-10 coach and program of all time in the state.” The Center Grove program is not only one of the elite programs in the state, but also in the nation. The 2021 MaxPreps preseason poll has the Trojans ranked seventh in the nation. “He has put Center Grove football on a national stage,” says CGHS Athletic Director Scott Knapp. “We are continually ranked in national polls and that’s due in large part to his ability to consistently put forth an outstanding, disciplined team. In a community that has come to expect excellence, Coach Moore always produces. That takes a tremendous amount of work, expertise and sacrifice on his part, year after year. He has put Center Grove football on the map.” Kyle Neddenriep has seen a lot of great Indiana high school football programs and coaches throughout the years firsthand, as the high school beat writer for the Indianapolis Star. 64 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“I’ve talked to many coaches over the years who hold coach Moore in high regard for his commitment to a high standard and his ability to keep the program there,” Neddenriep says. “That is probably the most difficult part - not only getting to the top, but keeping the program there year after year. If you look at Center Grove, it is a true program. You see many of the same names, same families through the years. The kids know the system as they come up through the ranks, and are well aware of who the coaches are and the players who came before them. Moore clearly maximizes the talent that he has. I think that is probably the best thing you can say about any coach in any sport, whether they win state championships or not.” Prior to Moore’s arrival at CGHS in 1999, the Trojans struggled to win in the IHSAA State Tournament from 1973 to 1998, with only one sectional and regional title, both coming in 1987. Under Moore the Trojans have won 15 sectionals, 14 regionals, six semi-states and three state titles. Moore’s oldest son Tyson Moore, now in his second year as head football coach at Seymour High School, recalls his father coming to CGHS 23 years ago. “No one really knew about Center Grove football,” he says. “It was a little 5A school surrounded by corn and bean fields. My dad had come from a powerhouse program in Florida to a school that many people said would never be able to compete with the Indy-area schools that made up the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference. The best way to explain it to someone who has no idea is that my father took a hut and built an empire. He will be the first to admit that it wasn’t just him. He TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 65

surrounded himself with great people who believed in what he was doing. Over time this program has grown, that community has grown, and now you have Friday nights where everyone comes out and wants to be a part of the special things happening on the field.” For Moore, it’s more than just a game of football. It’s about impacting the lives of countless young men. “My dad has poured his heart and soul into this game,” Tyson says. “I always feel fortunate to say that I have learned from one of the best to ever coach this game, and it always gives me a sense of pride when I hear people talk about the great things my father has done and how he has helped build the game of football in the state of Indiana. His Hall of Fame induction is the capstone to an unbelievably successful career, and ironically, it isn’t over.”

LAPS OF LUXURY CGHS UNVEILS NEW NATATORIUM Writer / Kevin Conrad Photography Provided

A major project on Center Grove High School’s (CGHS) main campus is now a shimmering reality. A 50-meter natatorium, complete with more than 1,000 seats for spectators, a therapy pool, classroom space, and lockers and restrooms for teams and guests, opened for business in July. “We have so many great facilities here at Center Grove,” says Bill Long, Ed.D., Center Grove Community School

Corporation assistant superintendent. “We’ve been fortunate that the board has the vision to allow us to be able to improve existing facilities and build new ones, all without raising taxes. This project has been particularly enjoyable because of the need for expanded space for swimmers, including the physical education department.” The state-of-the-art venue provides the space needed by all levels of swimmers in the Center Grove programs. “Just the number of lanes and the amount

of swimming space we now have will allow us to grow our programs at all levels,” says Scott Knapp, CGHS athletic director. “We were having 10 to 15 kids in a lane to practice. That will no longer be the issue. Club and high school practice will be able to run simultaneously, yet separately. Just looking at this pool, the attention to detail, the amount of natural light - you can see that every part of this project was designed with the studentathletes in mind. It’s a beautiful place for these kids who put in countless hours to do the work.”

68 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“We know that our youth program, Center Grove Aquatic Club [CGAC], is already growing,” adds Jim Todd, CGHS varsity swim coach. “The tryouts for the club is over 200 swimmers and that doesn’t include the swimmers already on the team. The CGAC is the feeder program for our middle school and high school programs, and as it grows so will the middle and high programs. This is going to help a ton.” The natatorium was designed by Fanning Howey architectural firm - the same firm that designed the Student Activity

Center. Visitors enter the facility into an atrium adorned with graphics depicting the high school’s Mr. Baseball, Mr. Basketball, Mr. Football, and three Miss Softball honorees. Directly off the atrium is the spectator level with seating overlooking the pool. Visitors can travel through the atrium, down a staircase to the pool level where classroom space and locker rooms are located. The area opens into the entrance to the Vandermeer Gymnasium and the high school’s Hall of Fame. “It flows nicely with the rest of the high

school,” Long says. “The graphics just add to a great design, and highlight the achievements of our student-athletes. The pool is gorgeous. Every time I walk in there I am so happy for our studentathletes that they have the opportunity to swim in such a nice facility. The addition of the therapy pool is also something I am very proud to have included in this project. It will allow many students to have the benefit of therapy during the school day.” “The school corporation has worked hard to provide all of our student-athletes

TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 69

with facilities that match the level of hard work and dedication they exhibit, along with the competition they face every day,” Long adds. “This is the only indoor pool in White River Township, so hopefully it will bring more students into the swimming program and allow the community to use it as well. We know there is interest from

the collegiate and state level to use our natatorium for competitive events. We are still in the infant stage of developing more programming that fully utilizes the facility.” “Big thanks to Dr. Long and all those involved for having the vision in making sure we created a state-of-the-art facility

that will benefit the whole Center Grove community,” Knapp says. “I believe having the right people in place, quality coaches, and people invested in building the program at the youth level will grow our programs. I believe that’s the setup we have now. With the new natatorium, we will have the space to welcome this growth.”
