GRACE COUNTYCROWNEDMCCARTYJOHNSONFAIRQUEEN

The Johnson County Fair Queen Contest is a long-standing tradition. Each young woman selected must be an active member of 4-H, poised and well-spoken. Grace McCarty, a 17-year-old senior at Center Grove High School, was chosen as the 2022 Johnson County Fair Queen on July 17. Grace is a nine-year member of 4-H, and shows pigs. Each year she raises pigs from February or March until fair time. McCarty raised two from the same litter this year. Wilbur and Bubbles, both spot pigs, are about 250 pounds each.

Each potential queen must prepare a speech. Grace’s speech was about something very close to her heart - her relationship with her pigs. The well-spoken teen gave a relatable and confident speech about how animals are treated.

“In today’s day and age we lose sight of how important animals really are in our society,” Grace says. “I made it clear in my speech that these animals deserve care and respect, the way human beings do. That was something significant to me.”

The Greenwood resident grew up admiring the Johnson County Fair Queens. Her parents were thrilled when she was crowned. They watched how hard she worked throughout the years and were proud of her commitment.

“When Bubbles was little she would blow bubbles, so I thought the name Bubbles fit her,” Grace says. “I treat my pigs very well. To me they’re like humans. Every Sunday I would get them doughnuts. I trained them to walk using marshmallows. They were probably some of the best I’ve ever had.”

Her queen responsibilities include handing out ribbons at the animal shows, taking photos with fair guests, handing out popsicles on the midway and participating in a princess tea with young Atchildren.theend of the fair, all the pigs go to auction. The animal meat goes to a food pantry to provide food to those residents with food insecurity. Grace says it’s tough letting them go each year, but knowing they go to a good cause makes it a little easier.

Grace plans to participate in 4-H throughout her last year of high school. As the Johnson County Fair Queen Contest winner, she will participate in the Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant.

“She put in so much hard work, and she pursued it with so much grace and competence,” says Jennifer McCarty, Grace’s mother. “She set her mind to it and leaned into it through her faith. We were thrilled for her.”

“I will have to prepare another speech about a given topic,” Grace says. “I don’t know the topic yet but I’m just getting ready. is such a great opportunity and a dream of mine. I’m really looking forward to it.”

HOOSIER

“The best thing about being crowned was all the good friends I’ve made,” Grace says. “It’s really nice meeting people I wouldn’t have otherwise met. I want to inspire younger girls to be themselves. I want them to know they’re equal to everyone else, and encourage them to join the contest. It’s so much fun and you gain great skills you can use outside of 4-H.”

Grace plans to graduate early from high school. Her number-one school choice is Liberty University in Virginia. She says she’s undecided on a major, but is considering business or animal science. She’s grateful for the opportunities and the friendships the queen contest has provided to her.

Grace says she had a great support system from her family and friends throughout the entire process. She celebrated with hugs and pictures with those who showed up to cheer her on.

Long weekend road trips are becoming a more cost-effective way to get away. Bloomington offers scenic views, outdoor adventures, and dynamic arts and food.

“Obviously, Bloomington is home to Indiana University so IU football is always a great idea when visiting the city,” says Erin White, director of leisure marketing and media for Visit Bloomington. “We also have the 4th Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts, the 10th Annual Kiwanis Indiana Balloon Festival, and many other festivals all fall long.”

It’s a great place to spend a few hours with the family. Hoosier Heights is an indoor climbing facility, so if your kids are really rambunctious and need to expend some energy, spending a couple of hours at Hoosier Heights is a fun way to get the whole family out and get them active. This includes creating meaningful goals, understanding your audience, determining what distribution channels and content formats to choose from, and measuring your content. Music Minded TRACE THOMPSON LETS MUSIC MOVE HIS SOUL Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Brandi Caplinger

In 2018 Thompson released his debut album, called “Get It Right.”

Music has always been the undertone of Trace Thompson’s life. As a little boy, he frequently pulled out his parent’s vinyl records and got lost in the sound. In middle school he began to learn how to play the piano but quickly fell in love with the sound of a guitar, even though he didn’t have one himself. In the summer of 1989 he purchased his first guitar from HeGuitarworks.playedmusic

“I was eating them when they announced my name and I almost choked,” he says. “Now my fans bring peanut M&M’s to our show sometimes as a good-luck charm.”

The pair arrived early to ride rides. When they got to the ceremony later that day, they were “Ifamished.wentto get us some corn dogs, and when I came in I saw that people were dressed to the nines so I was trying to sneak in the back door, corn dogs in hand,” Thompson says with a chuckle. The awards show ran long so he got up to grab some peanut M&M’s, and that’s when his name was called for winning Modern Country Male Artist of the Year.

all through high school, winning the Johnson County talent competition two years straight and placing well at the Indiana State Fair finals with just his voice and guitar. He even played with a southern rock band when he was allowed to do so, as a backup singer and rhythm guitarist. Thompson really got the itch to perform after standing on stage at Brown County’s Little Nashville Opry when he was a teenager. During his junior year he started writing music, and in his senior year he submitted a song he wrote to a national creative arts competition and won. After graduating from Center Grove High School in 1993, he went to Nashville to see if he could make something happen but quickly learned he was too naive to the business of music. He came back to Indy and worked three jobs, including a firefighter emergency medical technician position at the Bargersville Fire Department, and put himself through college. After a 15-year break, Thompson started writing music again while living in Texas. Due to family reasons he moved back to Indy in 2015, and a couple of years later formed the band called Trace Thompson & Another Round, which consists of Jason Smith (lead guitar and background vocals - also a 1991 Center Grove grad), Mike England (drums) and Ken Nicholson (bass guitar).

16 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2022 / TownePost.com

“I figured worst-case scenario, my grandkids might listen to it someday and think it’s cool,” Thompson says. The album hit national syndication from New York to Los Angeles, and he had three number-ones on independent charts for more than 14 weeks. He also charted in the United Kingdom and Australia. His first single, “Jesus & Me,” took him just 45 minutes to write. He followed that up with “In My Rearview.”

Both songs landed on several streaming radio services. In 2018 he got a handful of nominations for the Josie Music Awards (JMAs). He and his wife Dana traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, to Dollywood’s amusement park for the awards ceremony.

Through the course of his career, his band has opened for many artists including Chase Rice, Justin Moore, Randy Houser, and the band Midland. Last year he experienced a “pinch me” moment when he opened for Billy Dean and Neal McCoy at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Instead of hanging out in his trailer, McCoy watched Thompson’s entire show from the backstage staircase to avoid being seen. McCoy told Dana, “I’m staying back here because I don’t want to take away from Trace’s performance. This is his show.” Thompson was surprised when he turned to see the headliner watching his “Theshow.schedules those guys are on is grueling, like a 2 a.m. bus call for a show at 10 p.m. in another state, so the fact that he took the time to do that meant a lot to me,” says Thompson, who appreciates each and every opportunity, as well as his fans. “When I first started I was playing for the bartenders and waitstaff,” Thompson says. “Now we’ve got people making table reservations before the show and packing local venues out, more often than not.”

Each year the band puts on a number of charitable events as well. Thompson has supported the Indianapolis Firefighters Emerald Society and the Wounded Warrior Project, among others. Plus, for the past three years he has put on the Trace Thompson & Another Round Give Back Jam, a benefit concert that helps a local business, cause or family in need. The idea was birthed during the pandemic when everybody was stuck at home. Thompson invited Smith to come over and do a live stream. They then donated the proceeds to local restaurants and created tabs for first responders to enjoy lunch on the community, in thanks for what they were

“Wedoing.had an initial goal of raising $700 and ended up making $2,400, so we split that between Johnson’s BBQ Shack, Campbell’s Highland Grille and The Corner Bar,” Thompson says. “We even went up to help hand out lunches as the police officers rolled through the parking lot, which was really Thehumbling.”second Give Back Jam benefitted a little boy in the community named Colton Darst who has arthrogryposis, a congenital joint condition that limits his ability to use his arms and legs. The Darst family used the funds to purchase some much-needed special equipment for him, including a new desk and chair to help with virtual learning at Lasthome.year they donated proceeds to Hands of

“We got a really cool song out of that session, and we’re coordinating some time in the studio to cut a demo,” Thompson says. “I’ve had the pleasure of writing several songs with Jeffrey. He taught me to celebrate everything.”

Thompson has even gotten to write with some of his idols from back in the 1990s. For instance, he wrote with Brady Seals from Little Texas, and Steve Dean, who has written for Rick Trevino, Tim McGraw and George “It’sStrait.cool to get to meet the heroes who helped form my sound,” Thompson says. These guys are happy, too, because Thompson brings new energy to the writing sessions. A lot of prep work goes into being a professional songwriter. Thompson goes into each meeting with multiple hook ideas, each with a unique twist that’s relatable yet unexpected. He also comes in with cool guitar riffs, chord progressions and/or finger-picking sounds that help set the vibe for a song. “If you can do both, you’re considered a heavy writer because a pro writer appreciates the new ideas and doesn’t have the entire burden of coming up with something fresh day in, day out,” Thompson says. “If you and the pro click, you may get another shot at writing with them again, but you have to impress their publishers too. There’s a lot more to it than just writing songs.”

18 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2022 / TownePost.com

Though he still performs, these days he focuses primarily on writing songs, often collaborating with top songwriters in the industry. For instance, he’s written with people who have written recent numberones for Jason Aldean, as well as hits for Brad Paisley, Alabama, Rodney Atkins, Kelsey Ballerini and Brantley Gilbert.

Thompson was excited about a writing session he had in June with professional writer Jeffrey East out of Los Angeles and Tedd Swormstedt from Ohio.

Hope Indiana to provide Thanksgiving meals to 300 foster families. This year’s Give Back Jam will take place on Thompson’s birthday, November 12, and he’s still praying over which charity will be the beneficiary.

“There’s nothing more gratifying than having an audience sing your song back to you,” Thompson says. “It’s a rush like no Thompsonother.” has hinted at a release of some new music this fall. Follow his socials for more information, or visit tracethompson.com.

Thompson genuinely appreciates his fans, who have been along for the ride and continue to be supportive.

He’s written with up-and-coming hitmakers of today, for artists like Jackson Snelling, a contestant on American Idol, as well as powerhouse country singer Heather Victorino. This year Thompson is up for 10 JMA nominations, six of which are for songwriting. The awards ceremony will be hosted at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville this “WhatOctober.anincredible moment it would be to hear my name called and stand on that stage,” he says. “That’s sacred ground, for sure.”

WellBridge Surgical is disrupting the healthcare model for surgery in Indiana.

6300 Technology Center Dr. Zionsville,

Writer

Hoosiers pay the fourth-highest surgical costs nationwide according to a 2020 RAND Corporation study. WellBridge aims to make a difference with the uninsured, individuals with high-deductible insurance plans, and those with self-funded plans.

Local business owner Jeff Williams noticed the cost of health care was rising tremendously for his small business.

Williams didn’t want to increase his deductible for his employees, nor did he want to increase his rates by a high margin. Instead, Williams partnered with longtime friends Dr. Ron Piniecki and Dr. Eric Inman, both anesthesiologists, to revolutionize the way patients pay for their surgical care.

“Dr. Piniecki and Dr. Inman have worked at some of the biggest hospital systems, so they know most of the surgeons in Indianapolis,” Williams says. “We’ve partnered with some of the best surgeons in the city.”

“Our first surgical patient was a smallbusiness owner,” Williams says. “He and his wife were so thankful to find us. They have insurance but they never knew what they would pay for care. It made us feel like we were proving our theory right.”

SURGICALWELLBRIDGE

The country’s second-ever cash-pay surgery center offers Hoosiers fixed and transparent pricing for surgery.

The fixed payment method means patients know their all-in total cost for surgery prior to the procedure and don’t receive a surprise bill in the mail. Pricing includes the facility charge, surgeon fee and anesthesiologist fee. Patients pay a one-time consultation fee of $150 that is credited to the cost of the surgical procedure.

Not only is the pricing up-front and transparent, but patients also pay, on average, 30% to 60% less than they would at other facilities in Indianapolis. Williams says WellBridge can offer their patients those savings by not adding hidden facility fees. For instance, the WellBridge cost for ear tubes is $2,380, while the Indianapolis average is WellBridge$6,804.Surgical offers general surgery, orthopedics, gynecology, otolaryngology, urology, podiatry, and gastroenterology procedures. Patients contact WellBridge and are paired with a surgeon based on their specific surgical needs. The prices of surgical procedures are listed on the WellBridge Surgical website. The patient will know their total cost immediately.

At its core, Medicare was designed to help seniors access medical care while also helping to control their costs. It covers individuals aged 65 and over, individuals under 65 with certain disabilities, and individuals of all ages with end-stage renal disease. If you are confused about how Medicare works, you are not alone. Figuring out when to enroll in Medicare and which parts to enroll in can be intimidating for even the savviest retirees - but there is help. First you need to understand the ABCs - and Ds - of Medicare. Think of these as building blocks of Medicare. At the foundation is original Medicare, which consists of Parts A and B.

Ask a senior what’s important to them, and somewhere at the top of their list is having reliable and affordable health coverage. They may be facing worsening health issues, visits to specialists and increased medications. This can add up to considerable expenses, and usually at a time when they are on a fixed income or wondering if their retirement savings will last. Most seniors understand that turning 65 equates to eligibility for Medicare, and as their 65th birthday approaches, they experience a constant barrage of Medicare mail, commercials and phone calls that leave them with a sense of urgency, but also with a great deal of confusion on how to make sense of it all.

BE WARY OF UNSOLICITED PHONE CALLS. Unsolicited calls may result in your enrollment into a Medicare plan that you did not intend. Be careful when talking with a caller. If you did not ask them to contact you, you should end the call. Just as you would not give out your Social Security number, do not give out your Medicare number.

WORK WITH AN EXPERIENCED MEDICARE AGENT. Working with a trusted and knowledgeable agent can save you time and money. A good agent listens to what is important to you, educates you on your options, and helps you select a plan that fits your needs. They can also help customize your options as your medical needs and financial resources change in the years ahead.

UNDERSTAND THE COSTS. Medicare is not free, and recipients should expect to pay a monthly premium, deductibles and copays depending on the parts of Medicare selected. As mentioned above, even though Part A is free to most, the cost for Part B premiums is tied to taxable income. The higher your modified adjusted gross income, the higher your Part B premium. The same goes for your Part D premium.

One such local agency is Easy Street Insurance. Specializing in Medicare for more than 25 years, their agents help you customize a Medicare plan that suits your needs. Meeting with their agents comes at no cost or pressure to you. In the process, you will gain an advocate that can partner with you in the years ahead, and help you navigate the ever-changing Medicare system. TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2022 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 23 HELPS COVER SERVICES OF MEDICARE PARTS A AND B (YOU MUST STILL BE ENROLLED IN PART A AND PAY FOR PART B). FOR MANY, A PART C OR MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN RESEMBLES GROUP COVERAGE SIMILAR TO WHAT THEY MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING THEIR WORKING YEARS. * * * It’s certainly not an easy program to understand, but even in its complexity, Medicare successfully serves the needs of more than 60 million people, and that number is growing. The trick is understanding how to customize the program so that it fits your needs. At the heart of the Medicare challenge is understanding that Medicare is tailored to an individual. What may be the right coverage for your friend or family member may not be the right coverage for you. To help you make that determination, there are a few things to keep in mind. ASSESS YOUR MEDICAL NEEDS. Think about your medical needs, the number of doctors you see and the medications you take. Are you relatively healthy, or do you have a chronic illness that has you visiting several specialists each year and undergoing multiple tests and procedures on a regular basis? Do you spend several weeks or months in another state? Your answers can help evaluate which Medicare options will service your needs. KEEP AN EYE ON THE CALENDAR. Timing of Medicare enrollment is crucial. The enrollment window generally opens three months before the month of your 65th birthday and closes seven months later. There are exceptions to enrolling when you are 65, especially if you plan to keep working and have credible group coverage, but if you don’t understand this exception, missing the enrollment window can be costly. There is also an Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 to December 7, when Medicare recipients can make changes to their Medicare coverage that are effective for the coming January. In addition, you may switch Medicare coverage at any time due to special circumstances (such as moving to a different service area, receiving Medicaid assistance or loss of retiree health coverage).

From a 2015 state championship to an appearance in the 2022 Women’s College World Series, Center Grove High School (CGHS) graduate Jordyn Rudd’s impressive softball career is not over yet. Last spring Rudd was instrumental in helping the Northwestern University (NU) Wildcats to their best softball season in school history.

Rudd had a career-high four hits, three runs batted in, and scored the go-ahead run in a pivotal game-three win over Arizona State in the NCAA super regional to send NU to the 2022 Women’s College World Series. It was the first time NU had advanced to the “Thisseries.season

was expected,” says Rudd, a 2018 CGHS grad. “Our team knew we would get that far and we were glad that we had so many people in the stands, on TV, on social media, etcetera, that cared for and supported us. This season we fought and never gave up because we truly believed in one another, which is a reason we were successful. Our road to the Women’s College World Series was hard but so bittersweet.”

Rudd played for the late Hall of Fame Coach Russ Milligan at CGHS from 2015 to 2018. As a freshman, Rudd helped the Trojans win the Class 4A state title in 2015, the fifth and final state championship for Milligan. Milligan retired from coaching following Rudd’s senior season in 2018 and passed away in 2021. “Center Grove helped prepare me for college softball by allowing me to play with and against talented players that were able to push me on the field,” Rudd says. “Coach Milligan was instrumental in helping me with having a tough mentality for college softball, and dealing with my

2022 NCAA Defensive Player of the Year 2022 Softball America Third-Team All2019,American2021, 2022 First-Team All-Big Ten Rudd was caught off guard when she found out she was the first female catcher to win the Gold Glove award.

“We were at the Women’s College World Series and just finished up media day and practice, which was a long day,” Rudd says. “We’re heading back when my head coach and my pitching coach, along with our media team, said I needed to go back for one last interview. As we got there I walked into a room and there was an entire press conference with some of the best players in the game, past and present, holding a Gold Glove. I was stunned and it was an amazing experience. One of my Major League Baseball idols, Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals, has won the award multiple times and it was another piece of my childhood that felt complete after receiving this.”

Hall of Fame inductee and former Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench presented Rudd with the Johnny Bench Award for being the best collegiate defensive softball catcher in 2022.

“My family is the entire reason I am the person and player I am today,” Rudd says. “My sister is a pitcher at Southern Illinois and she would pitch to me, hit with me, and she pushed me and supported me along the way. My sister is my best friend and is one

“My father is a huge Johnny Bench fan and he taught me a lot from his style of catching,” Rudd says. “When I got the call from Mr. Bench that I had received his award, my dad freaked out and was so excited. He was amazing and the experience was a dream that I have always had, and a dream my dad has had too. It was great for us, after all these years of learning Mr. Bench’s style of catching and mimicking a lot of what he does, to be able to say that I won an award from my childhood idol.” Rudd credits her success to her family, friends, coaches and teammates. One of her best friends and former CGHS teammates, Abby Herbst of the University of Wisconsin, is extremely proud of what Rudd has “Jordynaccomplished.hasalways been a hard worker,” Herbst says. “She always used to talk about how much she would hit on her own at home. She deserves everything she has gotten and after playing against her in the Big Ten, that hard work has continued. She always steps up in the big moments. That’s how you can tell she is a real competitor and is the best kind of athlete. She never quits when it gets hard.”
