EMPOWERED LOCAL WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES GEEK IN PINK COMPUTER REPAIR

Regina Miller 317-882-1606

My passion is making people’s technology work for them. Whether it’s fixing account lockouts, printer problems, or smart home & computer help, it’s very satisfying to see frustrations lifted and customers enjoying the convenience and quality of life improvement brought by working technology. Many people learn to live with the little hiccups that accumulate over time or they simply stop using their computer. Our customers are often pleasantly surprised that we not only fix the problem they had us out for, we are ready to tackle their whole laundry list. Needless to say, we love our job.

THE WORDSMITH VA Teresa Clark 317-883-9116

My colleagues always asked me to proofread their work before it was published. I tend to easily spot spelling and grammar errors in printed materials. And mistakes published publicly by companies really irk me! It was only natural that I become a professional proofreader. As The Wordsmith VA, I use my top-notch proofreading skills to help business owners polish their written creations, including blog posts, articles, eBooks, brochures, and more. I use my eagle eyes to help business owners make their words shine and reach their target audiences.

FORWARD D SOUTHSIDE FOOT CLINIC CELEBRATES 50 YEARS

r. Wendy Winckelbach fondly remembers accompanying her father, Dr. J Winckelbach, to the hospital to see patients when she was a little girl. As they went on rounds, Wendy carried her dad’s medical bag and he lovingly referred to her as his “bag lady”. Wendy spent her summers through high school and college working at her father’s practice, and was always struck by how podiatrists are often able to alleviate a patient’s problem or suffering in one office visit. “Being able to make an impact like that for people on a day-to-day basis is a really great way to spend your working life,” she says. Wendy chose to follow in her father’s footsteps, becoming a third-generation practitioner as her grandfather also practiced podiatry. J had originally planned to become an archeologist. He took medical courses and 28 hours of Spanish so he could work in Mexico and Guatemala. Ultimately his cousin, a podiatrist, persuaded him to switch gears. “Instead of working on dead bones I worked on live bones,” says J, who opened the Southside Foot Clinic in 1970. J moved the office in 1973, 1976 and 1981. Several years later a group of physicians asked J if he wanted to join them to build an office on County Line Road, east of Shelby Street. J was there for nearly 15 years before moving to an office west of that location. At that point Wendy joined her father in the practice. The pair were there for five years, and then moved to the company’s current location at County Line Road and Old Meridian Street.

“Each time I moved, the practice increased significantly in size,” J says. “Plus, I had to move every so often. It’s the only way I’d clean off my desk.” Father and daughter worked together for 11 years before J retired in 2013. Dr. Michael Carroll joined the practice in 2008. A former classmate of Wendy’s, Carroll chose the field after shadowing a podiatrist and noticing that his patients were always happy to see him as they left his office received of pain. As the years have gone by, the field of podiatry has dramatically changed. “It’s amazing the changes that have occurred in the modernization of care,” says J, noting that when he first started, there were no lasers, power surgical equipment or scopes for surgeries.

how much the patients at Southside Foot Clinic loved their doctors. Dr. Michael Carroll

Carroll says the staff handles most closure procedures with a plastic surgical closure, where the sutures are under the skin. They place different tapes over the incision to protect it. Carroll jokes that gone are the days of telling patients to spray themselves with Febreze for two weeks in lieu of a shower. Depending on the type of surgery, patients can potentially get their foot wet after two days. “Thanks to advancements made in podiatry, what used to be an amputation can now be salvaged,” Carroll adds. “That’s life-changing for a patient.”

Carroll says recent progress made in surgical instrumentation is considerable. “Even doing arthroscopic work, going in and cleaning out someone’s ankle with a scope, the visualization that you can get far exceeds what it was 10 years ago,” he says.

Dr. Kathryn Alleva joined the practice in July, and has trained with more than 30 podiatrists in the area. She met the Southside Foot Clinic team through her residency, and the team members were impressed with how she matched up with their surgical, professional and personality standards. She was equally impressed with

Physicians at the clinic are board certified. They can handle reconstruction, various types of injuries, and treatment for all ages. “There isn’t anything in the foot and ankle that we can’t fix,” Carroll says. Alleva says the staff approaches each patient holistically. “Our goal is to not only manage the patient’s foot pathology, but allow the patient to participate in decision-making and feel comfortable with their treatment plan,” she says. The doctors also help to train podiatry residents at Community Hospital in surgeries each week. J served for 40 years as podiatry section chief at Community and St. Francis hospitals. When he stepped down, Wendy was voted in as section chief at St. Francis, and Carroll was voted in as section chief at Community South.

“It’s nice that we have a say in what happens with our profession moving forward at the hospitals,” Carroll says. J’s father was president of the Indiana Podiatric Medical Association. J later became president, and in 2018 Wendy assumed the role. Carroll will serve in that capacity next. Wendy, a Greenwood native, is grateful to be able to deliver quality care to people on the south side, where she makes her home. “I feel privileged to have the opportunity to interact with patients who were my father’s, as well as the occasional patient who saw my grandfather back in the day,” she says. J’s wife Susan lends her baking talents to the practice as well. It’s a tradition that dates back to 1973, when she found a cookie cutter in the shape of a foot.

Our goal is to not only manage the patient’s foot pathology, but allow the patient to participate in decision-making and feel comfortable with their treatment plan.

“We started making foot sugar cookies with red and green icing, and distributing them to doctor’s offices who referred patients to us as a thank-you for their support every Christmas,” J says. Each December Susan spends five days baking, during which she whips up between 3,500 and 5,000 foot-shaped cookies. Though it’s a lot of work, receptionists throughout the area are ecstatic when the treats are delivered. The Southside Foot Clinic is located at 33 East County Line Road, Suite B in Greenwood. Photographer / Amy Counts

Simply Chic is more than the name of this modern resale boutique, it also perfectly describes the selection of women’s fashion you’ll find here. Opened in July in the Smith Valley Shopping Center at SR135 and Smith Valley Road, it is the newest of the six Indy-area stores owned by Andy Burtner. “For ten years, Center Grove shoppers routinely visit the Fishers Simply Chic store. They always mention how much they’d love to have a Simply Chic closer to home”, says manager Kim Richardson. “We’re beyond excited to bring the Simply Chic experience to Indy’s southside.” That experience is the philosophy of focusing on the customer. “We deliver an experience from which each customer knows we appreciate that they are shopping with us and our

wide selection of ultra high-value fashion”, says Burtner. “We want them to want to come back.” Simply Chic buys and sells thousands of like-new apparel and accessories. Unlike consignment, customers are paid cash on the spot for items that Simply Chic is able to accept. Buyers handpick every item by style, brand and condition. The Simply Chic store is modern, clean and bright and has something for everyone -- teens to Baby Boomers. Amanda Wilcher is already a frequent customer. “I’m always so impressed with what I find here. Look at this -- a Burberry blouse! See my Prada purse? Found it here last month. I love that the store is clean and organized. It’s easy to find what I’m looking for and discover other fabulous finds I didn’t know I wanted”, she says laughing. “It truly is boutique shopping but at a significant savings.” “Sizes range from X-Small to 5x or 0 to 32”, says store manager, Maddie McQueen. “We carry everything from high-end brands like Louis Vuitton and Kate Spade and popular brands such as Anthroplogie and Free People to everyday brands like J-Crew, Loft and more. All are gently-used current styles and are a fraction of the retail price.” Accessories include belts, shoes, jewelry and designer handbags. A free Rewards program stretches the savings even further. For every dollar spent or earned by selling to the store, the

rewards member receive a point. Once 300 points are accumulated, the member receives a 20% Off Shopping Spree. This shopping spree is good for any of the six stores, unlimited times per day for 7 days. There are no exclusions, even designer handbags can be purchased using the 20% Off reward. Savvy women shop resale. Simply Chic provides the opportunity to shop the latest styles, save money, earn rewards, and enjoy the experience. Emma DeJong is an Equestrian World Champ at Age 14

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Counts

Emma DeJong was first introduced to horseback riding when she was four years old. “My grandma got me riding lessons with our neighbor,” she says. After a year of lessons, DeJong’s neighbor had a suggestion for her mom. “It’s time to buy a horse and build a barn,” the neighbor said. DeJong’s neighbor saw something in her

that many others would come to see, including her trainer Tommy Sheets, a professional All-Around Horseman with four decades of experience. He began training DeJong in 2019 and immediately knew she was something special.

the horse was a good fit for DeJong because he was aggressive, which can lead to riding difficulties. DeJong, however, loved Houston’s strong-willed nature as it mirrors her own.

“He had this fire in him, and I wanted a “She had so much raw talent,” he says. “You challenge,” DeJong says. can’t create that. Her talent just shines, but she had a lot more talent than she had It took a lot of work and patience taking horse power.” Houston from a two-event to a sevenevent horse, but the pair did it, and Sheets proposed that DeJong get a new DeJong has had an incredible year in horse, one with little training so they circuit wins, having won titles at the Youth could develop the horse they wanted. Horses are my life. -Emma DeJong-

“Winning Youth World was a dream come true,” DeJong says. Sheets has never had a student win at the world level for equitation prior to DeJong. Typically, a youth rider will elect to focus on one event in order to excel in that particular field. DeJong, however, wanted to excel at English, Western and Trail. “Tommy is a good trainer for All-Around and one of the best in the nation for Trail,” says DeJong’s mother, Amanda Cottingham Johnson. DeJong enjoys equitation because of its flowing patterns. “There’s not a lot of stopping and turning,” she says. “You’re following the pattern and doing different things. Houston loves it

because he gets to run faster. I like Trail because every pattern is different, as well as the different obstacles.” DeJong’s favorite part of the sport is simply being with the horse. “I like communicating and connecting with them - building trust,” she says. That trust is crucial, given that the horse doesn’t know a given pattern and the rider must guide them every step of the way. “You have to have a bond to be able to do that,” says DeJong, now a high school freshman at the Indiana Agriculture & Technology School in Morgantown. She transferred there from the Center Grove school system because she travels so frequently to shows in Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Arizona, Florida and Oklahoma. Many of the shows are 10 to 14 days long. At the Agriculture &

Technology School, she can do all her schoolwork online. “It’s like a charter school,” Cottingham Johnson says. “Every Tuesday she goes to the farm in Morgantown to learn everything about the 600-acre farm.” In a few years DeJong hopes to attend a Division I college on a scholarship, and ride on an equestrian team. “I want to go to a college that’s going to support my horse riding and my academics,” says DeJong, who plans to pursue a degree in sports medicine. According to DeJong, to excel in this sport, one must have strong calves and thighs, a strong core, and be extremely driven. It’s also important to keep anxiety at bay, as horses can pick up on how a rider is feeling.

16 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atCenterGrove.com

“They’ll feed off of your emotions so if you’re tense or scared, they’ll try to take advantage of you and do what they want,” DeJong says. When it comes to training, Sheets sometimes has his students work around the clock. “At these shows, he’ll have the kids get up at 2 or 3 a.m. and practice when the arena is empty, then show all day long,” says Cottingham Johnson, owner of the Barn at Bay Horse Inn in Greenwood. “It’s exhausting. When Emma gets home, it takes a couple of days for her to get rested back up because she’s worked so hard.” DeJong doesn’t mind the grueling practice schedule. “Horses are my life,” she says. To some degree, horses are her family’s life by extension, because there is no

off-season. The discipline involves yearround showing, usually every other week. In between shows, DeJong gets driven to Louisville to train with Sheets. Her stepdad, Dallas Johnson, drives DeJong across the country in their RV for shows. “My husband has been so supportive of Emma, and so have my parents, who go to almost every show,” Cottingham Johnson says. “I was gone for almost a month when she was at her world shows. It takes a village to do this.” However, they wouldn’t have it any other way. “I will always show and ride,” DeJong says. “It’s who I am.”

BARE WAX AND SPA

Local Couple Helps Clients Feel Their Best Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Garro

Visiting a spa is supposed to be a selfindulgent experience full of relaxation and restoration. Years ago, however, Paula Barger had a horrific waxing experience that left her skin burned and ripped. The incident lit a fire within her. “I never wanted another person to endure something so awful, so I decided to alter my career path,” says Paula, who was attending medical school at the time. She promptly switched gears and enrolled in esthetic school. “Not only did I love the work, but loving on people was the business model I wanted to follow,” says Paula, who became determined to eventually open her own spa.

Owners Paula and Dean Barger

It was a tough road however, as Paula, a mother of five (two of her children are biological and three are adopted from Ukraine), was going through a difficult divorce and struggling to make ends meet. Armed with a fierce love for her family and a driven spirit, she was determined to see her vision through to fruition. In early 2012 Paula met Dean Barger, a divorced father of three who was hesitant to open his heart to love again. Though he was not looking for a romantic connection, he couldn’t deny the spark between them. “I literally realized after our first date that this was the person I wanted to spend my life with, do life with and dream with ” Dean says. The two admitted their true feelings and

began dating exclusively. In the meantime, Paula realized her dream and opened Bare Wax and Spa in September of 2013. Dean, who had worked in the corporate world for 32 years, helped out behind the scenes with the Bare logo, the web site, marketing and social media. Over time, word spread and Paula’s client list crew exponentially. Bare Wax and Spa began to grow quickly and currently offers unisex full body waxing, lash and brow services, facials, skin care and semipermanent cosmetics. In 2014 Paula moved to a storefront boutique and hired four additional staff members.

“At that point, Dean made the decision to leave corporate America,” Paula says. “Because we needed him full time at the spa.” The latter decision worked out well, and Dean, who has a background in art, became licensed and certified in microblading and semi-permanent cosmetics. In July of 2014 Paula and Dean were married on the shores of Key West, Florida, and the couple wrote the names of their eight children - Kelsie, Lake, Sydney, Natasha, Chase, Vika, Colin, and Anya - on seashells placed by their feet during the nuptials. When they returned home to Greenwood, they threw a big celebration for family and friends. In 2017 Bare Wax and Spa moved to its

current location on East Main Street in Greenwood, and in 2018 Paula and Dean added the Lash Lounge. The couple, along with the help of Paula’s father Charles and Dean’s best friend Mark built out the space, which included the addition of several service rooms, painting, decorating and much more. “My daddy, Mark and others were amazing assets to help us out,” Paula says. “It was tough. Through all of that we still had the spa open, so we were working 90-hour weeks.” All of their hard work has most definitely paid off. The spa attracts clients from surrounding areas including Avon, Shelbyville, Columbus, Muncie, Brown

County, Bloomington, Bedford, Terre Haute, Lafayette, Richmond and Cincinnati. Paula even has a lash client who travels from Washington, D.C., twice per year. People come not only for the top-notch products and services, but also because they appreciate the heart and soul of the staff. “We have a heart for our clients and that’s the key to running a successful business,” Paula says. “If you’re in business for the right reasons, every day is a great day! Maybe I’m a romantic, but I truly believe that.” Paula also believes in transforming lives. She refers to the spa as her outreach ministry, and says she regularly sees people come into the spa downtrodden

and leave completely changed. She recalls a lady who came to the spa to have her lashes done. Afterwards the lady was crying, and when Paula asked if she was OK, the woman said she was crying happy tears and that her spa experience left her feeling pretty for the first time in a long while. “She was welling up with pride because she felt so much better,” Paula says. “That’s the most beautiful feeling in the world.” Bare Wax and Spa is located at 916 East Main Street, Suite 106 in Greenwood. Local Residents and Longtime Friends Become Authors

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

Two longtime residents of the Center Grove area, Valdena L. Navratil and Beverly Scellato, recently released their own respective written works. “An Invitation” is a collection of poems inspired by Navratil’s life experiences and deep spiritual reliance. Scellato’s novel “Gum Tree Lane” is a mystery full of intrigue, family values and faith. Both women have known each other for many years through their church. “For 25 years I wrote and taught Bible studies at Gracepoint Church, and Val attended them,” Scellato says. “She is a giver. She would always tuck her poems in papers she handed me.” Navratil says she used to put her poems in Christmas cards and hand them out at gatherings. “People would say, ‘You should get these published,’” she says.

Friends Valdena L. Navratil and Beverly Scellato recently released their own respective written works.

Navratil was born and raised in Maine but settled in Center Grove 46 years ago when her husband accepted a transfer with GTE. She has always enjoyed writing and throughout many years has accumulated a substantial collection of

written work. In the spring of 2019 she reached out to Christian Faith Publishing, who accepted her manuscript. “The book came out right before Thanksgiving last year,” Navratil says. “Overall it was a good experience, but a lot of work. The editing process and cover design went back and forth several times. My goal was to get it published so my kids and grandkids could have it, but mainly I want to spread the word and invite people to come into a relationship with the lord.” Scellato’s work is of a different genre, but the theme of faith is woven into the writing. The concept of her novel is based on history and actual places in Australia, but every character is fictional. Scellato and her husband Robert have been involved in Australian agriculture since the early 1990s. They moved to Union Township in 1968 and for the last 30 years have lived in Bargersville. One of their neighbors was the former owner of a large potato farm in New South Wales. “We went on a three-week visit to Australia and our friend took us all over,” Scellato says. “At that time, his farm was on the market again and up for auction. That put us into the potato farming business. Throughout the years, we visited many towns and got to know the Australian 28 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atCenterGrove.com

INTERIOR people. I wrote the first chapter of “Gum Tree Lane” on a plane in 2011 while flying back to the United States. I was looking for something to do and was scrolling in my computer when I found it and starting adding to it. The more I got into it, the more I enjoyed it.” Scellato’s resulting novel was published by self-publishing company AuthorHouse in the spring of 2020. Set in Australia, the story centers around a prominent family and the unexpected death of their grandfather. The patriarch’s cause of death is ruled as murder when the results of an autopsy are revealed on the day of his funeral. As the tale unwinds and surprising developments are revealed, the reader can’t help but question their own understanding of faith and life after death. Both “An Invitation” and “Gum Tree Lane” are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Readers can choose a traditional bound format, or go with the e-reader option. The books can also be purchased through several online book sellers.

Scellato was able to host a book launch at her church the week before the coronavirus pandemic shutdowns were mandated. Meanwhile, she has completed “The Everlasting Arms”, a second mystery novel for fans to look forward to. atCenterGrove.com / OCTOBER 2020 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 29
