EXPLORING THE UNEXPLAINED NEW SHOW TACKLES LOCAL STORIES OF THE PARANORMAL
Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided
Losing a loved one is an unfortunate part of life. Some people claim to feel their loved ones communicating with them even after they’ve died. A new, all-female show called “Paranormal X Road” aims to help bring peace to alleged paranormal experiences. Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn co-host “Paranormal X Road.” Duncan is an author, writer, producer, director and paranormal researcher. McGlinn is a local radio personality who uses her voice to help the local community. Tiffany Rice, a spirit medium, rounds out the cast. “In the first episode, I had some things happening in my home,” McGlinn says. “I was pretty sure it was my grandmother coming through. I don’t want to give too much away, but it ended up being way more than just my grandmother communicating with me.” Being an all-female show was essential to both women. Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 9
“First and foremost - girl power,” Duncan says. “I believe females, in general, are a little more empathetic. I feel like the female energy helps the spirits communicate. Paranormal shows are all over television. I feel like it’s time for an all-female team. We’ve gone into homes of people we don’t know and received messages that we don’t necessarily understand, but it makes complete sense to the homeowner. That’s been pretty cool. We understand how meaningful it is to them.”
McGlinn, an Indianapolis resident, felt compelled to put the normal in the paranormal, as she says. “When I moved to Indy, it was really a lastditch effort,” McGlinn says. “To be here 20plus years later in a community that I love, seeing them embrace this new show, is just amazing. I feel like the community trusts in me, and that was important for this show.” The duo funded the show through a Kickstarter campaign, meeting their goal in
just three days. “The beauty about Kickstarter is the person who gave $5 has the same effect as the person who donated $500,” McGlinn says. “It’s all or nothing, which is terrifying. If you don’t hit your goal, you get nothing.” Duncan’s vision for the show is to help as many people as she can and provide a sense of comfort. “I got into this because I was missing my
10 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
dad,” Duncan says. “Bringing these people peace has been magical. I want to help people all over the world.” Duncan and McGlinn are hopeful for a second season, to bring even more paranormal stories. “Right now we’re just enjoying the show airing,” Duncan says. “We’re really hopeful we can create a second season with an even bigger budget so we can help even more people.” While Season 1 is almost done filming, KJ & Kitsie continue to be available to assist homeowners experiencing the paranormal or just hoping to make a connection with a loved one who’s passed. A contact form is available through their website. The show airs locally on WNDY-TV 23 on Saturdays at midnight, and on YouTube. For more information, visit paranormalcrossroad.com.

GOATS ON THE GO A HERD OF GOATS HAS BEEN DEPLOYED IN ONE CENTER GROVE NEIGHBORHOOD
Story & Photos Provided
One Center Grove neighborhood is proving that everything old is new again. A herd of goats has been deployed to perform ‘targeted grazing’, a method to help manage unwanted vegetation in a sustainable way. Waters Edge subdivision is the current site of the former Center Grove Lake. Built by the Pennington family in the 1950s, Center Grove Lake was a popular place for residents to swim, fish and picnic all the way into the early 2000s. History eventually gave way to progress and that area was developed into what is now Waters Edge subdivision. Today, along with decades of memories, the lake and the dam remain. Jim Wikel, caretaker of the dam, explains the conundrum which led to this natural conservation effort. “Every two years, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources requires an inspection of all dams,” he says. “They’ll walk the slope of the dam looking for structural issues, gopher holes, slippages, trees — anything that would compromise the integrity of the dam.
Normally, we mow this and control the natural vegetation growth with weed-eaters and bushwhackers, but the presence of poison ivy presented a new challenge.” Wikel recalled an article he read years ago that piqued his curiosity. After further research and a few phone calls, Goats On The Go Indy was hired. Goats are one of nature’s purest forms of weed-eaters and bushwhackers. Chomping and chewing their way through dense vegetation, they open up overgrown areas and help to restore native landscapes without the use of herbicides. Goats deal with steep slopes and rough terrain with little erosion and with much less safety risk than humans. Honeysuckle, multi-flora, little trees, thistle and even poison ivy are just some of the vegetation that are favorable to goats and the protein content of some of these plants far exceeds that of the very best hay available. No other animal can consume, digest and make use of those nutrients other than a goat. At Waters Edge, Goats On The Go Indy ringed the targeted area with a solar-powered electric fence and 23 female goats were delivered. For five days, these ‘ladies’ feasted their way through
TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 13
the area easily accomplishing what would have been a hazard to humans. They were monitored every day of their assignment and were provided plenty of fresh water and mineral supplements. “They’re doing a great job,” Wikel says. “They really like the slope.
The difference in this vegetation in just a few days is remarkable. Aside from the ‘nature at work’ aspect, I’ve just really enjoyed watching them every day.” To learn more about Goats On The Go Indy, visit goatsonthego. com/milanohossom.

GOT YOU COVERED! AffordaShare Offers Simple, Affordable Health Care Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne
Jeff Frey used to sell traditional health insurance, but with an increase of calls from clients with complaints and questions about their current health insurance plan and the constant changes, confusion about networks, monthly premiums skyrocketing and deductible amounts going up he thought, ‘there has to be another option’ for his clients. Jeff determined there really were only a couple options out there. He also realized, “You really don’t need health insurance, what you need is a way to manage and pay for your needed health care,” Jeff says. Ultimately, he found that medical cost sharing is safe, fast and straightforward. It’s kind of how health insurance started many, many years ago. Therefore, six years ago he launched AffordaShare. AffordaShare is not insurance but a private medical association. “Once you become a member with AffordaShare, you no longer need traditional health insurance,” Jeff says. His wife Lisa, also works for AffordaShare as the Operations Manager and member services liaison. Jeff says his target market is primarily Small Business Owners, Independent Contractors, Real Estate Agents, Roofers, Landscaping Companies, HVAC, anyone that does not have access to a large group plan or that works for themselves and obtains individual health insurance on their own. “Clients usually save about 30 to 50% individually or on their small group health insurance cost as well, all while still receiving great health care coverage and great customer service,” he says. A lot of people think they can only change plans once per year, but that’s not always true. Typically, you can call or email your current health care provider and cancel any time throughout the year, they just don’t want you to do that. Health care plans and health insurance plans generally are month to month and can be canceled throughout the year with a couple weeks advance notice. “At AffordaShare, we take new enrollments all year long,” Jeff says.
“THEY WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS AND, AFTER EVALUATING THE COVERAGE, TALKING WITH A LONG-TIME MEMBER AND LOOKING AT THE SAVINGS, THEY USUALLY DECIDE AFFORDASHARE IS THE BEST OPTION.”

They do, however, see an upsurge in enrollments towards the end of the year as people and small businesses are planning for the upcoming year. Fall or open enrollment is an important time for you individually and for small businesses. This is the time you are trying to assess the next 12 months of your health care cost. “This is a great time to compare AffordaShare to your current health care plan,” Jeff adds. “If we can save you money, still offer great health care protection and give you great customer service, why not do it? It’s a head’s you win, tails you tie. There is nothing to lose by simply comparing cost and coverage regardless of what time of the year it is.” AffordaShare offers many different packages of various levels, with slightly different features and benefits to fit everyone’s needs and budgets, regardless of age or medical conditions. In addition, AffordaShare serves all demographics, from younger people who just got off of their parents’ plans, all the way up to those who are ready to switch over to Medicare. “We have clients of all ages, married, single and families with children, and we are currently in 19 states,” Jeff says. If you’re not sure if AffordaShare is a good fit for you, it doesn’t hurt to check them out. You can call them up or go to the website at AffordaShare.com click on the “Get-a-Quote” tab in the upper righthand section. Just complete the info there and hit “SUBMIT.” Within 24 hours you’ll have multiple options and prices to review.

“This way you can make a well-informed, thoughtful decision on what’s best for you, your business and your family,” Jeff says. Of course nothing in life is certain. The Freys know this well. A few years ago, they got a call from a young man, 28-years-old, who was inquiring about AffordaShare because his mother wouldn’t stop telling him to obtain some type of coverage. He told Jeff he was healthy, worked out, didn’t smoke, and wasn’t sure he’d ever need or use the coverage. He wanted the cheapest plan possible. Jeff set him up with the least expensive package that did not cover annual exams, dental or vision. However, if he had a major medical event, the most he would be responsible for paying was $6,000 a year. As fate would have it, this young seemingly invincible man was diagnosed with cancer six months later. “His care and treatment extended out for
almost two years, so he paid a total of only $12,000 out of almost $150,000 in medical expenses,” Jeff says. “He is very grateful he contacted us, and so is his mom.” Jeff says a question he often hears is, “What am I not getting with you that I am getting with my current plan?” “We do not cover ongoing serious mental health issues like severe depression, mental health hospitalization or drug and alcohol rehabilitation,” Jeff says. “Virtually everything else is covered, including broken bones, stitches, ultrasounds, maternity, cancer, strokes, heart attacks and anything in between.” Though they don’t cover mental health rehab and therapy, they do cover office visits for things like depression, anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. “If you need to go in and consult with your doctor a couple times per year about your
medication, well that is just a simple office visit and we cover that,” Jeff says. Lisa finds that potential clients will often want to talk to current members to ask how easy the process is. “We have many members that have used us for years and have experienced various medical issues,” Lisa says. “I find that they are happy to share their thoughts and experiences of having AffordaShare with new or prospective members. “They weigh the pros and cons and, after evaluating the coverage, talking with a longtime member and looking at the savings, they usually decide AffordaShare is the best option,” Lisa adds. AffordaShare is located in Fishers, Indiana. For more information call (317)-431-7541 or visit affordashare.com.

CAR CARE
VEHICLE MAINTENANCE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER
Writer / Dave Barnett, Christian Brothers Automotive Photography Provided
We live in unusual times. This is evident in the market for new and used cars. With a global shortage of computer
chips driving shutdowns of automotive production lines, the supply of new cars and trucks has slowed to a trickle. New car dealerships lack inventory to fill their lots, and a significant portion of the few cars they do have are incomplete, awaiting
delivery of control modules to make them operable. With no new vehicles to buy, consumers have turned to the used market. As demand for used cars has surged, so
have prices. Used vehicle prices are up approximately 30% year-over-year. Many owners have had offers on their cars for more than they originally paid for the vehicle but have wisely declined to sell, knowing that while they might turn a quick profit, they could not buy a comparable car with the revenue.

QUALITY ASSETS.
Now is also a good time to consider any upgrades or performance enhancements that could not be previously justified. Vehicle modifications make more sense when a car or truck will be kept for a long time. If a vehicle is going to be in the family for a while, why not make it more attractive and enjoyable to drive? This situation has left many drivers in older cars when they otherwise would have traded for newer models. Keeping an existing car or truck is simply the right financial decision for many today. This means that maintaining that old car in top shape is more important than ever. Repairs that drivers may have previously passed off to the next owner must now be addressed. Maintenance schedules, too often ignored by owners who intend to trade their cars every couple of years, can no longer be safely dismissed. Preventative services such as fluid flushes, which prolong the useful life of essential vehicle systems, not only keep vehicles running at peak performance, but also have a positive financial return by reducing the risk of breakdowns and costly repairs.

The part shortages at the heart of these market conditions are likely to take many months, if not years, to resolve, and once resolved, pent-up demand will likely keep car prices high for the foreseeable future.
is no reason an old car has to look old or drive poorly. A new set of custom wheels, a high-performance suspension system, or power-increasing engine components can breathe new life into an old car or truck, making a stale vehicle exciting to drive again. In these unusual times, it is wise to re-evaluate one’s finances and budget, including money spent on personal transportation. Funds that had been budgeted for payments on a new car may now be better slated for properly maintaining and enhancing an older one. Fortunately, such budget adjustments usually lead to financial benefit. Keeping an older car in good condition is generally much less expensive than buying a new one. Life can be quite enjoyable in an old car. Keep it well maintained, invest in some fun upgrades and enjoy the ride. 22 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

FOND FAREWELL REMEMBERING JASON MUELLER, “THE VOICE OF THE TROJANS”
Writer / Kevin Conrad Photography Provided
Jason Mueller will forever be remembered for his impact on many people in the Center Grove community. He was a husband, father, son, friend, teacher, teammate, classmate and “The Voice of the Trojans.” The Center Grove High School (CGHS) graduate and Walnut Grove Elementary physical education teacher passed away in July after a long battle with colon cancer.
“Jason had a way to make everyone feel special,” says Hannah Mueller, Jason’s wife. “He had a special gift of memorizing small details about people and being able to connect on a personal level. I always knew Jason was bright and beautiful, but I didn’t realize the magnitude of how many students, staff members, athletes, friends, teammates and community members he had impacted over decades. The stories continue to pour in about how Jason made them a better student, person, co-worker and friend. It has been
overwhelming in a wonderful sense to see all of the qualities I knew he had carried over into his everyday life.” “Jason was such an incredibly loyal member of the Center Grove athletic family,” adds CGHS Athletic Director Scott Knapp. “He stepped in and found his niche as ‘The Voice of the Trojans’ and became a vital part of Friday nights. Jason was happy to fill this role because he simply wanted to contribute. His loyalty to Center Grove was evident as a dedicated

classroom teacher, a youth coach, student council sponsor and more - all because he thought Center Grove was the best place in the world.” Many of us in the Center Grove community just knew Jason as the public address announcer for CGHS football, basketball and softball games, but there was so much more to Jason than just his dynamic, booming voice. “Jason was a loud, silly and loyal family man,” Mueller says. “He worked so hard to make our blended family feel loved and cared for. He went out of his way to connect with each child throughout their different stages in life even when he was incredibly ill. He was the husband every woman dreams of. He treated me like a queen and loved me for who I am.” Center Grove resident Sean Guilfoy was Jason’s best friend, dating back to when they were middle school classmates and teammates in Center Grove Little League baseball. “I loved him like a brother and miss him daily,” Guilfoy says. “Center Grove lost a great person. Everything he did was always to help someone.” Guilfoy and Mueller were also CGHS baseball and football teammates in the 1990s. Guilfoy recalls his favorite high school story about Jason. “We played pool until 4 a.m. the Thursday night before a football game,” he says. “We were off of school that Friday, so we played pool. His dad woke up and came out

That Friday, we played our best game of the season and we were named players of the game.” Jason and his family received tremendous support from many in this community during this very difficult time. “Center Grove Community School Corporation has been wonderful to Jason and our family during his health crisis,” Mueller says. “The Center Grove community itself has rallied behind us, and has ridden the waves of good news and bad right along with us during the past three years. The love and support gave us the sense that we were never alone. This was so important during hospital stays, surgeries and COVID times.” The tremendous support for the Mueller family has continued. “So many people have stepped up and have supported our family during Jason’s illness and now during a time of loss,” Mueller says. “We have been blessed by donations, memorials, tributes, cards and letters. Jason had a passion for education. The Center Grove Education Foundation has set up a scholarship fund in his name. Continued thoughts and prayers are needed for Jason’s parents and children during this time of loss.” “We are honoring him as every football player in Center Grove from the high school to the middle school, down to our Bantam youth league, has a Jason Mueller sticker on their helmet this season,” Knapp adds. “Jason was the definition of friend,” Guilfoy says. “Jason is what a best friend should be. He was kind, a listener, blunt, quirky, loved you no matter what, full of advice if you needed it, not afraid to show emotion, stubborn and loyal. He made a huge impact on everyone he came into contact with. The amount of love that has been poured out over the last couple of years and recently isn’t surprising to me. He will be a Center Grove icon and legend forever. He loved his kids and students and this community, and they loved him back. Most people got to know him as Mr. Mueller or ‘The Voice.’ I just knew him, and always will, as my best friend, loyal to a fault to his buddies. We are going to miss him.” 26 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com

SWINGING FOR PARKINSON’S
TED KITCHEL SCORES A HOLE IN ONE WITH ANNUAL GOLF FUNDRAISER Writer / Kevin Conrad Photography Provided
Being diagnosed with a progressive disease for which there is no cure is unimaginable to most of us. It’s a reality that Center Grove resident and former Indiana University AllAmerican basketball player Ted Kitchel has been living with for five years. He is among the nearly one million people in the United States who are living with Parkinson’s disease. Every year, 60,000 people are diagnosed. The disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. It can cause tremors, stiffness and slow movement. Kitchel, an IU Hall of Fame basketball player, refuses to let the disease slow him down. In fact, he’s joined the fight to find a cure. In August he hosted his second annual Golf Outing to help raise funds for Parkinson’s research. Kitchel scored another “hole in one,” generating nearly $55,000 to support education and research of Parkinson’s disease in the Department of Neurology at

the Indiana University School of Medicine. “It was a fantastic day,” Kitchel says. “We had a great turnout and a great time. A big thank you to my wife Kristi, and my daughter Mackenzie, for all of their hard work in organizing this wonderful event.”
SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS!
This year’s charity golf event at Valle Vista Golf Club was a Who’s Who of former IU basketball players, current IU assistant basketball coaches, former Purdue players, and Kitchel’s closest friends. IU men’s basketball head coach and Kitchel’s former IU teammate, Mike Woodson, was unable to attend due to a prior commitment, but didn’t let that stop him from lending his support. “I’m at home in my recliner the night before the golf outing and I get a call from Woody,” Kitchel says of Woodson. “He says he can’t attend but he wants to donate $5,000.” Coach Woodson also sent two IU assistant coaches to attend and play in the golf outing. Despite a rainy day, Kitchel’s inaugural golf outing in 2019 raised more than $40,000 for Parkinson’s research. With this year’s total, Kitchel has raised more than $95,000, and he plans to keep it up.
There’s nothing worse than a traumatic injury, infection, new wound, or ingrown toenail and being told the next available appointment is 10 days out. We can treat you TODAY! 33 E County Line Rd, Suite B, Greenwood, IN 46143 (317) 882-9303 | Southsidefootclinic.com
NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
“I’m doing fine,” Kitchel says. “I have good doctors that take good care of me. I’m active, and I do Rock Steady Boxing and play golf. I think it’s a slower-moving type of Parkinson’s. I don’t have many problems any different than what I had five years ago. My Parkinson’s is fine. I encourage everybody who has Parkinson’s to get out and stay active. Whether it’s walking, doing Rock Steady Boxing or playing golf, don’t sit home on the couch, as it will only get worse. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. You die with Parkinson’s. You don’t die because of Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s is something you can live with, so deal with it. Get out, and stay active.” To make a donation or for more information, go to swingingforparkins. wixsite.com/tedkitchelgolfouting.
