Greenwood was first known as Smocktown, in honor of brothers and early settlers John B. Smock and Isaac Smock. Another set of brothers have honored Greenwood’s roots by naming their new brewery after those first settlers. SmockTown Brewery opened in mid-October.

“The owners are brothers-in-law,” says Cynthia Ader, assistant manager. “They both have full-time jobs other than the brewery. One has done a lot of small brewing for the last 20 years. He’s been interested in brewing for a long time. The other owns the building, and when he saw the opportunity to open this wonderful brewery, they took it. It all kind of just fell together.” The space is an old historic building located in the Riverfront district on Pleasant Creek. “The building was built in the early 1900s,” Ader says. “There was significant work that needed to be done to get the building up to code. A lot has been done inside, but the outside of the building is still original. Almost all of the walls inside are exposed brick to keep that authentic feel. We didn’t want anything to cover that up.” There is plenty of space inside and outside for guests to enjoy. “Inside, we have our main bar,” Ader says. “You can sit right next to our brewing equipment. The only barrier is a fence, but you can see everything with the brewing process. Outside we have a beer garden to enjoy when the weather is nice.” Guests can watch one of five televisions inside the brewery. “Four of the TVs can be one giant screen or four different screens,” Ader says. “We’ll use TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 7

“With the pretzels, we offer different cheese options such as queso and pepper jack cheese,” Ader says. “Once we have our own beer, we’ll do a custom beer cheese with our beer. We have multiple charcuterie boards to pair with the beer or wine. We have sandwich options like pulled pork, grilled ham and cheese, and chicken panini. The sandwiches are served with a variety of different chips. We also offer soups like tomato and broccoli cheddar, along with some rotating salads.” Future plans include a bourbon bar in the upstairs area. “We do have a three-way liquor license, so we will have a bourbon bar upstairs,” Ader says. “The atmosphere up there is going to be a little different. There will be more couches, and an area to sit down, relax and hang out. It will be more of a restaurant feel.” The establishment was built and designed with a focus on individuality.

“Our environment is a lot different than other breweries,” Ader says. “We have so many different spaces for people to enjoy. Our food is amazing.” Currently the brewery serves those 21 and older, but Ader hopes that changes in the future.

Alyssa Andrews is back home again in Indiana after a three-year stint at the ABC affiliate station in Lexington as the weekday morning meteorologist on “Good Morning Kentucky.” A 2021 graduate of Mississippi State University where she earned her master’s degree in meteorology, she can be seen covering the weather on both Fox 59 and CBS4. As an alumnus of both Center Grove High School and Indiana University, her heart never really left the area. “I’m so excited to get back home,” Andrews says. “It was always a goal. This is where I belong. I found myself driving three hours to go to my niece’s soccer games. I could see where my priorities were. Home happens to be a pretty big place. There are eight meteorologists on staff and we are called the Weather Authority. I do the weather on the CBS side every Saturday and Sunday night, and fill in on Fox 59 as needed for Chief Meteorologists Brian Wilkes and Chris Wright. They are so knowledgeable and I soak up what they share like a sponge.” Andrews, who began her career as a sports broadcaster, never thought she would become a meteorologist. While she was at Center Grove High School, she was a competition cheerleader and followed her mom’s footsteps by playing a bit of softball. One of her teachers suggested she participate in Center Grove TV (CGTV), so she thought she’d give it a try. “It was basically reading off announcements and student news,” Andrews says. “At first it felt terrible, but I eventually got comfortable with it. ‘Good Morning Indiana’ anchor Lauren Casey and I were a year apart at Center Grove, and we were on CGTV together. We enjoy talking about it now. When I was at IU, I majored in telecommunications and socialmedia journalism. I’m still a newsie and I love to edit

video. While at IU, I did sideline reporting for the student Big Ten Network crew and gained live shot experience, which was really important towards getting experience for a job.” During her senior year at IU, she coached both the basketball and football cheer teams. She learned to drive a school bus so she could drive the girls to away games. She had to give it up when she got her first job at NBCaffiliated Channel 2 in Terre Haute.

since she was 4 years old. “Call of Duty” is her favorite game, but she stays in touch with her nephews by playing “Fortnite” with them. In addition, she stays involved with the IU Media School by visiting the campus and giving talks to students.

“Being back in the Indianapolis area is my first job with a meteorologist degree under my belt,” she says. “I love my family, and I love my home teams, Center Grove and IU, so I’m so happy to be back.”

“I did everything,” Andrews says. “I was a news reporter, and covered city council meetings and local politics. I would work 3 a.m. to noon for a couple days, then do dayside reporting and at night cover high school sports. One day no one was available to do the weather - everyone was sick or something and the station manager asked if I would cover it. I kept being asked to cover the weather and I began to do it more and more. Before, I never really found myself paying attention to the weather. I had to call my mom and ask, ‘What do people wear when it’s in the 60s?’ Meanwhile, I never thought I’d go into meteorology, but I just loved it.” When the regular morning weather anchor left the station, Andrews was offered the job. The station had never hired a nonmeteorologist before. She found a mentor in Channel 2 Chief Meteorologist Jesse Walker. “Most people who do the weather always knew they wanted to do it,” Andrews says. “I felt I could present and fill in, but I really loved the science and wanted the credentials. Once I got the daily position, I enrolled in Mississippi State. Since I did not have an undergraduate science-based degree, I had to take classes in physics and calculus to get into the graduate program. I thought I would just try to take a couple courses at a time, but I ended up taking a full load while working. Jesse really helped when I had questions and made it so much fun. In January 2019, I left Terre Haute for Lexington because they offered to pay for my degree. I couldn’t pass it up.” While Andrews was away from the area, she stayed connected to home. Her whole family enjoys gaming and she has been playing 12 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

“That’s exactly what I found at F45. I got not just a workout plan that provided me totalbody fitness, but a community of people who celebrate each other when we succeed and push each other when we need it. Everyone, the trainers, the management and the members, all make F45 an extremely enjoyable and rewarding place to continue my fitness and wellness journey.” F45 stands for functional 45, meaning workouts last 45 minutes and are designed to maximize your workout in a short amount of time. “We like to describe F45 as personal training in a group setting,” says Chris Hasse, Assistant Director of Training. “We have dedicated cardio days, dedicated weight-training days and dedicated hybrid days. Each workout is different.”

With so many options in gyms, workouts and nutrition, it can be difficult to tell what works best for each individual. J.C. Wogomon joined F45 Center Grove because he was bored of the same old routine at do-it-yourself gyms.

The concept boasts 35 branded workouts, and those exercises are different with each class. The certified personal trainers guide clients through the workouts, offering modifications for those who need it. “With F45, you’re getting the best of both worlds when it comes to cardio and strength training,” Hasse says. “We’re trying to make you as well-rounded as possible in your fitness journey. We’ll always adjust the workout, not to make it easier, but so you’ll get practical training without getting hurt.”

“The community was extremely supportive during that time,” says co-owner J.T. Metzger. “People came out and tried the workouts. They told their friends in Center Grove and Greenwood about us, and we were able to grow a core group of people who are our mainstays.” Metzger, along with co-owner Chris Jeter, attributes the client retention rate to the welcoming environment. “There are no mirrors in our studio, so people feel comfortable working out,” Metzger says. “You’ll see folks hanging around after the workout chitchat and talking about their kids, talking about what’s going on in their lives.” F45 even offers nutritional guidance with meal plans and grocery lists. “We offer a diagnostic, three-dimensional body scan that assesses their overall body composition,” Metzger says. “We also provide a fitness challenge each quarter.” New clients can take advantage of a free seven-day trial. “We offer the seven-day free trial so that they can try a variety of different classes,” says Natalie Pesto, Director of Admin and Sales. “They can get some one-on-one time with our trainers, too.”

Brian Alvey jokes that all through high school, he successfully avoided every military recruiter. Following graduation in 1991, however, he wasn’t sure what direction his life was headed, so his grandmother facilitated a meeting with a retired Army colonel who turned out to be quite persuasive. “I met with him on a Tuesday and enlisted on Thursday,” says Alvey, who was in the military for a dozen years before he ever deployed. “We had so much peacetime throughout the ‘90s.” That all changed after 9/11, at which point his active duty skyrocketed. “I was glad to have the opportunity to let the rubber meet the road and do the job I was trained for when I went to Afghanistan,” Alvey says. He was a paratrooper for most of his career, working in a long-range surveillance unit. Those interested in finding out precisely what that is can go to 16 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

Wikipedia for the definition. Alvey wrote it. He was medevaced out of Afghanistan when he got slammed hard in the back of a vehicle. He received an active duty military medical retirement in June of 2012, serving a total of nearly 21 years. Once he was medically retired, however, he went back to Afghanistan as a security and intelligence contractor for the Department of Defense where he served shoulder-to-shoulder with phenomenal leaders. Alvey, who has four children, Dominic, 23, Joseph, 21, Marco, 13, and Sophia, 11, is currently a business consultant who works primarily with local bars, distilleries and wineries. Plus, he’s the founder of Warrior 110, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds to help combat veterans who are struggling with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Alvey himself suffered a TBI. “Post-traumatic stress has fallen into a horrible category similar to sexual assault victims, in that there is a stigmatization attached to what happened,” says Alvey, who notes that 22 veterans per day commit suicide. “It’s not a disorder. It’s a wound.” This is why he and others participate in ruck marches, for which they strap on 45

pounds and march 110 miles in five days. As a medic in the military, he frequently saw men for blisters, splinters and ankle twists. “They’d come to me for these injuries but when the most sensitive part of their body, the mental mechanism, needed a bit of a tweak, they were like, ‘Nah, I’m good,’” Alvey says. “That’s insane.” Reid Storvick served seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time, he was part of a project in Texas for border patrol and did deployments in Afghanistan and Central America. He joined at 19 because he wanted to be a combat engineer and was told he would get to build living quarters and bridges with the bonus of blowing stuff up. Now Storvick is an Indianapolis firefighter and is grateful to have the same kind of brotherhood in his firefighting unit that he had while serving in the military. He, too, feels passionate about making

sure those who serve have access to mental health services. “The fact that we’ve lost more veterans to suicide than we have lost in the 20-year war in Afghanistan and Iraq is mindblowing,” says Storvick, who once had a friend tell him that he was researching how to shoot himself in the head and still have an open casket for his family. “Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness,” adds Storvick, who lost a Marine Corps buddy to suicide following his deployment to Central America, and recently had a firefighting colleague take his own life. “So many people loved these guys,” Storvick says. “It hurts knowing that they felt that there wasn’t a solution. I want anybody who feels that way to call someone. Call me. I don’t care if I know you or not.” Storvick feels that the transition to civilian life, post-deployment, is the hardest part of serving.

in three workouts per day, logged their meals, and participated in fitness and nutrition classes. Some soldiers saw tremendous results, including one 23-year-old man who went from living at home with his parents with no car, no goals and no ambition, to finishing the program, passing the physical fitness test, and landing a fulltime job with the National Guard.

In the summer of 1996, Erin Betron was a poor college student trying to make ends meet when she came across a flyer that read, “ARNG Opportunities: $18 an hour, part-time.”

“You go from being trusted to handling millions of dollars of equipment and explosives at 19 and 20 years old, to coming home and landing a regular job where you’re not trusted with anything,” Storvick says. In 2020 he opened The Smoke Pit, a cigar bar located in downtown Greenwood. It’s a business inspired by his time spent in the military when he would congregate with other soldiers to chat and smoke in an area called the smoke pit. Storvick and his wife Jessica have four children, Dominic and Ryder, 11, Dahlia, 8, and Axel, 6 months. He suggests that anyone contemplating joining the military should talk to all of the branches. “There are different jobs in every branch of the military, so search those avenues,” he says.

“That was a lot of money back then,” says Betron, who joined the Indiana Army National Guard, making it through the enlisted ranks to E-8 Master Sergeant. Betron has a fervor for physical fitness, and in 2017 her adjutant general asked her to become a Master Fitness Trainer and build a program for soldiers who struggle with their Army physical fitness test. Despite having no building, no budget and no equipment, she co-created a 15-day program for this population of troops, with three other soldiers. “It was like ‘The Biggest Loser,’” says Betron, noting that participants engaged

She credits her military experience for molding her into the person she is today. “It gave me confidence and grit that I didn’t have growing up,” Betron says. She resigned her active duty position in March of 2020 to begin working at Eli Lilly and Company as a leadership development consultant. She still, however, serves part time in the Indiana Army National Guard as an ambulance platoon leader at the 215th Area Support Medical Company at the Johnson County Armory. Betron, who has two daughters, Izabelle, 18, and Anna, 14, says some young people join the military because they don’t know what else to do. It’s wise, however, to enter with some sense of direction. “I suggest either choosing a position you absolutely love or try something that will help you find work in the outside world when you’re done serving,” Betron says.

“I want to take this opportunity to express my extreme pleasure in working with the F.C. Tucker Company and Mike Cagle. I have experienced selling a home 15 times and have to say that Mike was the best agent I have ever worked with. He went far above what I expected in communication and looking out for my interests.” – Gus K.

When terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, Jason Newbold, a high school senior at the time, felt inspired to enlist in the Army. Five months later, he was headed to boot camp in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was a parachute rigger. “I wanted to do something in aviation and my recruiter suggested this because he said I’d get to jump out of airplanes and helicopters,” Newbold says. “I was young and adventurous, so it sounded fun.” When he returned from his first deployment to Iraq, his parents were excited, but he wanted to go back.

SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS!

“I felt more at home there than I did here,” Newbold says. Two months later, he got his wish. During his second tour of Iraq, Saddam Hussein was found. “All of the Iraqis were shooting their guns into the air celebrating, and we’re standing there thinking, ‘These bullets have to come down some time,’ so we went running,” Newbold says. He says the military helped him mature and give his life direction. Ever since he was 5, Newbold dreamed of becoming a pilot. Now he owns BOLDJets, a jet buying and selling brokerage firm based at the Greenwood Airport. Something else came to fruition as a result of the military - Newbold met a lovely lady at the end of his time serving. They have a 14-year-old child together. “That’s the best thing that happened from my time serving,” he says. When it comes to choosing to join the military, it’s important to know that anyone who enlists is making a difference. “We can all say, ‘I’m just one person. What can I do? What can I change?’” Newbold says. “But there’s a level of pride when you can look back and say, ‘I spent time serving our country.’”

CGHS FOOTBALL HAS SIGHTS SET ON ANOTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Writer / Kevin Conrad Photography Provided

Senior Caden Curry with the Copper Kettle TownePost.com / NOVEMBER 2021 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / 21

T

he unparalleled success Center Grove (CG) enjoyed on the football field the past two seasons has been scary good. Hence earning the moniker, ‘Monsters of the M.I.C.’ (Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference). The Trojans are the first team in the M.I.C. to go undefeated in conference play in backto-back seasons, capturing the conference championship trophy in 2020 and 2021. Center Grove went 14-0 last season and won the class 6A state title. CG concluded the 2021 regular season with another undefeated record at 9-0 which included victories over Cathedral, Carmel, Warren Central and Ben Davis. “It is almost unprecedented in the largest class to see this type of sustained excellence,’’ says Kyle Neddenriep, Indianapolis Star newspaper high school sports writer. “There have been dominant teams for a season, but it usually cycles through to the next team the following year. I know (CG head football coach) Eric Moore was concerned with complacency going into the season, but it seems like – if anything – this year’s team is even more dominant.” The CG football program has been elite the past two seasons, ranked not only the number one team in Indiana, but ranked number one in the midwest and top 10 in the nation. “I thought last year the Trojans were in the discussion in terms of the best team of all-time,” says Greg Rakestraw, ISC Sports Network high school football announcer. “The only one that I’d say from a numbers and historical perspective that might have topped them, would be 2006 Warren Central, who CG is trying to match as the last team to repeat as state champ in the state’s largest classification. I thought this year’s CG team wouldn’t be as good but would still be the best team in the state. The latter part is clear, now it’s simply a matter of comparing this group to a season ago. But to potentially be the first team to repeat in the history of 6A, and the first to three championships at the 6A level is clearly something Eric Moore and staff can hang their hat on.” 22 / CENTER GROVE MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2021 / TownePost.com

Moore’s first season coaching at CG was in 1999. He is now seeing his former players from teams in the early 2000s return to the community and volunteer to coach in the CG Bantam Football League. “That’s the full circle,” Moore says. “Football is extremely important to the Center Grove community because of what has happened with it. With the success of so many kids (former players), it helps

you create a family atmosphere and a true program as we are still doing the same things that we did in 1999 in 2021.”

fathers. It’s been a great ride for everybody and the last two years have been a lot of icing on the cake.”

Another key ingredient to Moore’s successful program is his ability to keep his coaching staff intact year after year.

This year’s team has not one but two Mr. Football candidates, seniors Caden Curry and Tayven Jackson. Curry is a four-year starter on the defensive line and Jackson is a three-year starter at quarterback.

“Since the 2000 runner-up team, very few coaches have come and gone,” Moore says. “Most have stayed and I’m very proud of that. They are good teachers and good

“It’s been a blessing to watch Tayven grow and learn and continue to learn,” Moore adds. “I can’t believe it’s going to be over in four weeks. If things go well, it could be a third time he goes to the state championship and that is unprecedented as well.” Acct. Serv.

sideline making plays,” Moore recalls. “This kid is legit. It’s hard to start in the M.I.C. conference as a freshman in a line position. He’s just never had a bad game. It’s been our privilege to watch him do so many things. This year he caught a touchdown and ran for a couple of touchdowns. It’s been fun to watch him on the red zone offense.”

No quarterback has led an Indiana high school football team to three consecutive state championship games. Jackson could be the first if the Trojans make it back to Lucas Oil Stadium for the 6A state title game on Thanksgiving weekend.

“Anytime you have a two-way threat, it creates a problem for the opponent,” says Paul Condry, President of Indiana Football Digest magazine. “Tayven is that guy. He can beat you in so many ways. Jackson has committed to play football at the University of Tennessee.

“Jackson really came on to the scene as a sophomore when he had one of his best games in the state championship loss to Carmel,” Neddenriep says. “He had another big-time moment as a junior when he led Center Grove down the field in a win over Cathedral in the final minute. His ability to run and throw is a weapon not a lot of teams have. Because of his position, it helps his

schools, Alabama, Clemson, Indiana, Ohio State and Oregon.

Curry could arguably be Center Grove’s greatest football player of all time. He has narrowed his college football choices to five

“I think Caden Curry is the best allaround football player in the state of Indiana,” Condry says. “It’s a very unique dynamic when a defensive player is at the

centerpiece of your opponent’s game-plan. The times that I have seen him play, his motor is always in overdrive. I sure hope he goes to play at Indiana (University). He is a once-in-a-generation type of athlete. In my opinion, Caden Curry should be named Mr. Football.”

“If there is an opportunity for a defensive player to win Mr. Football, this is it,” Neddenriep says. “Curry’s impact goes well beyond his numbers, which are impressive for his career. Curry is probably the best defensive lineman I have covered since Sheldon Day at Warren Central, who was similarly quick and strong. I think it will help Curry’s chances that he has played some offense this year, too.” “Curry’s one of the three best Indiana high

school football players I’ve ever seen,” Rakestraw adds. “I marvel at his ability to run sideline to sideline for a player of his size. I think back to the tackle he made in the semi-state game his sophomore season against Ben Davis where he lined up over center and made the play on the far sideline for a gain of two or three yards. I just started laughing on the air when that happened. You’re not supposed to do that at his size. Then you add what we saw again against Ben Davis with a one-handed touchdown

catch this season. The sky’s the limit for that young man.” The Trojans have won 10 straight Sectional titles, the longest current winning streak in the state. CG also looks to become the first team to win back-to-back 6A state titles. “This Center Grove team could go down as one of the best high school football teams in Indiana history,” Condry says.
