ON THE MEND PAWS, WINGS & OTHER THINGS RESCUES AND REHABILITATES NATIVE INDIANA WILDLIFE Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Katja Kimball, president of Paws, Wings & Other Things, has a special place in her heart for wild animals, and goes out of her way to help them. She says the mission of Paws, Wings & Other Things is “to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned, injured or sick native Indiana wildlife and return them back into their natural habitat, as well as educate the public about wildlife and promote their conservation.” It’s a mission that requires a lot of time and dedication. Kimball often works 17 hours a day to help wild animals. She is fully committed to helping creatures in need. “I am state and federally licensed to rehabilitate mammals and birds,” Kimball 4 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
says. “The public can reach out to me for injured and orphaned wildlife, and I take in the animals to provide the care they need. When they are ready, we return them to the wild.” Kimball gets medical help for the animals when they need it. “I have a licensed veterinarian that comes to my facility to ensure the proper care for the animals,” Kimball says. Kimball also educates the community on how they can help wild animals. “I give educational talks when groups or places reach out,” Kimball says. “These talks are free.” Kimball has rescued and rehabilitated

“We received several foxes with mange, which is caused usually by stress, because these foxes have a lowered immune system and have underlying infections,” Kimball says. “They get treatment for mange and antibiotics. We get many raccoons throughout the year. The most recent ones had injured feet and legs. One was hit by a car and had internal injuries. We currently have four barred
Kimball says Paws, Wings & Other Things always needs financial help.
Kimball plans to stay dedicated to Paws, Wings & Other Things for many years to come. She says she has been dedicated to helping animals since she was younger.
“People can mainly help with donations and ordering from my Wish List on Amazon,” she says. “We need money, old towels and blankets, toys, stuffed animals, and meat donations. We currently have meat eaters. To raise money, we also have Facebook fundraisers. We need money
“I’m from Germany,” she says. “I started caring about animals as a child. I moved to the United States in 1989. I was one of the founding members of Paws, Wings & Other Things. The name was my idea. I’ve been with

“My life revolves around wild animals,” she says. “I have four vacation days in the summer. This life is not for everyone. The animals can scratch because they are scared. It takes a lot of knowledge to take care of them. If people want to help the wild animals here, financial donations are the best way to help. We have had people with great intentions reach out to us wanting to help, but this isn’t a cute place where you take care of little puppies and kittens. The wild animals don’t want to play. They are scared, hungry and hurt. We work with animals with claws and beaks. You must be able to read their body language and know when they want to be fed, or when to clean out their cages. We do appreciate the positive support we get from people though. It means so much.”

Kimball says working at Paws, Wings & Other Things is worth it because she helps numerous animals each year. “We rehabilitate around 1,000 animals a year and we are very grateful for the support we have received from our followers,” she says. “We couldn’t rescue this many animals without their support.”

BEAMAN HOME IMPROVEMENT
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Unquestionably, 2020 was a crazy year as a result of the pandemic. During that time, people began spending a lot more time at home, whether it was to work, study or just relax. As a result, suddenly home improvement experts saw a spike in their services because folks wanted to turn their homes into personal sanctuaries that spotlighted the features that were important to them. For years, Jon Beaman and his wife, Olivia, had tackled remodeling jobs in their own homes. In doing so, the pair found they had a passion for it, making 2020 the perfect time to open up their own home improvement business. Part of the reason the couple started Beaman Home Improvement in 2020 is because they were seeing a drop in quality craftsmanship in the home improvement industry. Because this is where they excelled, they were eager to raise the bar in this market. “I can relate to wanting to change up a part of 8 | February 2024 | TownePost.com
your home and the feeling of satisfaction you have when you see your vision come to life,” says Beaman. “Improving functionality, visual appeal or both can really make your house feel more like a home.” When they launched Beaman Home Improvement, they asked customers to share their two primary frustrations when it comes to dealing with contractors. Number one was lack of communication, as contractors refused to call them back. Number two was a lack of professionalism, as contractors simply didn’t show up when they promised. “We set out to change both those things,” says Beaman. Olivia, the project coordinator, handles all the phone calls, and schedules estimates and bids. If she can’t take a call when it comes in, she returns the call right away. When she schedules the team for a job, they arrive promptly and without fail. “I’m proud of our communication,” says Beaman. “When we say we’re going to be there, we’re there. That’s important to people.”
Beaman lives by a set of values that he holds dear, both personally and professionally. This means standing by his word, being transparent with communication, and ensuring an excellent caliber of work that is superior to others in the business. “No one works like me and my team,” he says. “They are good, clean-cut guys who are the best at what they do. People like having us in their homes.” Although Beaman and his team can take on work of any kind, they specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, basements and general interior remodeling.

“Those are the spaces people use all the time, and we pay close attention to detail because details matter,” says Beaman, who has an expert eye for spotting potential in projects and spaces. “Bringing a client’s vision to reality allows me to share in that rewarding feeling when they see the finished product,” he says. Starting a home improvement business was a natural step for Beaman, as it allowed him to blend his creativity, expertise and love of detail. “I enjoy turning outdated areas in people’s homes into beautiful and practical spaces that will serve them for years to come,” Beaman says. Although they try for quick response times, since they are a small, niche team, their schedules fill up quickly, so it’s best to book a couple of months in advance. Because people value their time and space, Beaman does his best to not start a project until he knows he can finish it in a timely manner. As such, clients don’t have to live with messes in unfinished areas for extended periods. Not only is Beaman Home Improvement located in Center Grove, but Beaman and his wife have also been Center Grove residents for years. “We love living in this community and serving this community,” he says. When it comes to his business, Beaman is most proud of the quality of work that he and his team provide. “We have integrity, we’re honest and we’re not trying to make a quick buck,” he says. “We’re here for the long run.” This is precisely why they see so many repeat clients. “We have a lot of customers now that we are doing second and third projects with,” Beaman says. “Repeat customers is a good sign to me that we’re doing something right.” Visit Beaman Home Improvement on Facebook @HammeringTilHome. Dampier’s Aunt, Mother and Father with 50 Cent
LOCAL SEAMSTRESS HAS A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE JOINING 50 CENT TOUR Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Jamie Dampier with a dancer from the ‘50 Cent Final Lap Tour’

amie Dampier, 39, has had a needle and thread in her hand ever since she was 5 years old. Now a master seamstress and owner/founder of Hous of Dampier, a premier sewing shop and clothing alteration service, Dampier can add a new line to her vita: a member of 50 Cent’s touring entourage. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came as a surprise, but also seemed to be kismet. For years, Dampier has worked as part of the local wardrobe team at Ruoff Music Center to help when artists such as Rod Stewart and Janet Jackson come to town. In this capacity, she preps garments for shows, washing, drying and pressing costumes, as well as inspecting each of them to be sure there are no rips, holes or tears. Because Dampier is such a seasoned seamstress, she’s been asked by some artists to do more. For instance, when Shania Twain performed at Ruoff last summer, she asked Dampier to make her a rhinestone dress right there, on the spot. “I could not have been more excited,” Dampier says. The 50 Cent concert was a huge show that included 10 dancers and five wardrobe changes. In total, Dampier and her team were responsible for prepping more than 100 pieces for each show. “Before the July 27 show, I had to immediately fix things because some of the costumes were falling apart,” Dampier says. The management for 50 Cent noticed TownePost.com | February 2024 | 11
how professional she was, dubbing her ‘The Magic Maker’ for her keen eye, quick work and incredible talent. They were so impressed by Dampier’s abilities they asked if she would join them for the remainder of the tour. She chuckled and said, “I wish,” to which they replied, “We’re serious.” She had 30 minutes to decide if she was going to upend her life for the next five months. The U.S. tour ran until September 22, followed immediately by an international tour, which concluded on December 14. Dampier had brides and other clients who were counting on her, not to mention her two children, aged 12 and 4. While it was not an easy decision, she knew she couldn’t pass up the opportunity, although she admits to being an emotional mess when she had to kiss her sleeping boys goodbye at four in the morning before leaving on the tour in late July. “I criss-crossed all of North America with this tour,” Dampier says. “Places I’d otherwise never see in my life.” Each member of the four-person wardrobe crew was given a primary task, although they also had to know everyone else’s jobs so that they could step in, if needed, should someone become sick or incapacitated. Dampier was in charge of anything that had to do with the dancers, such as getting their dressing rooms ready

and ensuring they had towels, water, mirrors and air conditioning. She also reconstructed any garments when they got destroyed, which occurred regularly. “The dancers worked their tails off every night,” Dampier says. “After every show we had things to fix on their costumes busted zippers, missing buttons, holes and tears.” She was also responsible for setting up wardrobe changes for the next show. This is where her work with the Center Grove Show Choir for the past 19 years came in handy. “I’ve learned how to do a lot of MacGyver-ing, using unique materials and coming up with crazy reveals, and ways to layer costumes so performers can do quick changes,” Dampier says. “That definitely set me up for the fast wardrobe changes on tour.” Dampier also wasn’t fazed by late nights or long hours. “I’ve always managed to balance work and time with my children,” she says. “I make sure I get dinner for my kids, put them to bed and come back to work. That dedication and determination, not to mention working crazy hours and running on little sleep, all paid off. But I tell you what - going on tour is not for a person who likes a nine-to-five job.” Despite a grueling tour schedule, Dampier notes that management took care of

everyone’s mental health. “If we needed a break, they made sure we got it,” says Dampier, who was treated like part of the family as soon as she joined the tour. “I tend to get along with most anyone,” Dampier says. “My sister says that spending all those years working with interns honed my teaching skills and developed my patience.” Interestingly, just four months before Dampier was asked to join the tour, 50 Cent was in Greenwood doing a bottle signing for his alcohol brand at a liquor store across from the mall. Dampier went to the event, but the lines were crazy long and it was freezing outside so she didn’t get in. What she did do, however, without realizing it at the time, was manifest her future by saying, “Man, 50 Cent would be a great tour to be on.” “It’s crazy that I said that, and then later that year I was standing five feet away from him on his tour,” Dampier says. “He couldn’t have

been any nicer. What a pleasure to work alongside those professionals who are also among the kindest and coolest people on earth. That includes Busta Rhymes, too.” She admits that while this opportunity was presented to her at the perfect time in her career, it would be hard for her to repeat it because she doesn’t want to leave her children again. Instead, her goal going forward is to establish connections and get recognition for her design skills, not just her sewing skills. “If I’m the designer, I could design clothes for artists but not have to go on tour,” she says. Her ultimate plan has been to turn her business into a boutique and showroom so she can feature her own designs in addition to other people’s designs and artwork. Bringing this dream to fruition is now a reality. “I’m so excited for this evolution,” Dampier says. “I invite everyone to come to the open house.” Details are coming together on a date
and time and will be announced soon. She aspires to eventually grow a trade school. “I feel that’s something we really need, because this line of work is a dying art,” says Dampier, who is years younger than the majority of those in the alteration business. Dampier is now back in Greenwood and ready for business, so stop by to see her. “It’s good to be home,” she says.

She’s not going to be hopping on a tour bus any time soon. “Unless,” she says with a chuckle, “Beyoncé, Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga is asking.” For more information on Hous of Dampier, call 317-500-4560 or visit housofdampierin.com.

SENIOR LIVING COMPANY
GOES VIRTUAL Reaching senior status is a major milestone, and it comes with questions and challenges for older folks and their loved ones. Navigating the worlds of healthcare and senior living can be overwhelming. That’s why senior living management company CarDon & Associates created the Senior Resource Hub — a virtual space uniting seniors and their families with industry experts on topics like navigating Medicare, recognizing the signs and symptoms of early memory loss and understanding senior living options, to name a few. An ongoing series of Q&A videos housed on CarDon’s website, the Senior Resource Hub was partly a response to COVID, and it developed in 2021, as people were still isolating and social distancing. “As the rest of the world went virtual, so did we, allowing us to fulfill our overarching mission of serving the greater community outside the walls of our campuses,” said CarDon Vice President and Chief Growth Officer Kendra Fauth-Edwards. “We thought, ‘Let’s bring all our resources together and have casual, open video conversations that we can share with anyone, even those who don’t live in our communities or have loved ones who are residents.’” The Resource Hub videos range from one-on-one interviews to virtual roundtable discussions with several experts in various fields. And they often bring out personal, relatable insights. For instance, in the video on medication management, CarDon Director of Clinical Coordination Angie Scally talks about how she helped her grandfather sort his medicine when he was having age-related difficulties. “My grandfather had slight dementia, and when he was at home, he had his meds on a coffee table, in a cabinet, on his bedside table, etc.” she said. “I worked with him on putting all his medicines together in one place, discarding the ones he no longer needed to be taking and color-coding the ones he was currently taking. Having a meds list that breaks down the how, why and when you take those medications is also helpful. You’ll want to keep that in your purse or your wallet for medical appointments because it helps healthcare providers give the care you need.” In addition to CarDon representatives, the videos feature outside experts such as elder law attorneys, registered dietitians, dialysis providers, veteran benefit providers and more. They tackle tough questions, such as how to talk to loved ones about moving into senior living, what signs of memory loss to keep an eye on, where to look for respite care, etc.
We want seniors and their families to feel comfortable coming to us for help. Fauth-Edwards
Best of all, the Senior Resource Hub allows people to broach these sometimes sensitive topics from the privacy and comfort of their homes. Viewers and those interested in learning more can send questions for future videos to InfoCD@cardon.us. You can find new and archived videos at https://cardon.us/senior-resource-hub, or scan the QR code below. “Visiting the Senior Resource Hub is a great way to find answers to difficult questions and get advice for approaching sensitive topics related to aging seniors, “ Fauth-Edwards said. “We’re approachable, we’re online and we’re here for whatever you need along your own journey.”
