PUBLISHER’S WELCOME It was an incredible year for the Center Grove High School football team. Coach Eric Moore celebrated his 200th career victory. By the end of the season, the team had captured the IHSAA Class 6A State Title! The coach calls it “The Perfection,” and that certainly seems to apply to this year’s performance.

In this month’s cover story, One for the Ages, Kevin Conrad shares a discussion with Coach Moore and his thoughts on some of the outstanding seniors on the team.

But football is not the only sport in this month’s issue. We also introduce you to the Genesis United Soccer Club. Comprised of homeschooled students, the club is a member of the Indiana Homeschool Soccer Association, but their completion is not limited to other homeschool teams in the association. They also regularly play games

against public schools who are a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association.

It’s a full-fledged program that includes programs for men, women and JV teams. Kris Parker has the honor of introducing you to this team with a mission.

Families are another recurring theme in this issue. Many new parents can feel overwhelmed by the arrival of a single child, but imagine the challenges of two, three or more infants! That’s where SouthSide Parents of Multiples comes in. It’s a support group for parents of multiples of all ages, not just little ones. Kris Parker brings you the stories, and Forrest Mellott’s photos capture the diversity of the group.

“The Perfection.” That’s how Center Grove High School head football coach Eric Moore describes the Trojans’ 2015 undefeated 14-0 season. Coach Moore’s team had its most historic season ever: winning the IHSAA Class 6A State Title, winning the powerful Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Championship, securing the number-one ranking in the state and rising into the top 10 in the national polls. DON'T CALL THEM CHIA PETS Writer / Nancy Craig

When it is so cold here and I miss being outside gardening, I call my sister Judy in Florida to see what is blooming in her garden. This time, she had a surprise: little blue flowers growing in the mulch just off her patio. Judy had tossed out some chia seeds into her yard, thinking maybe the birds would eat them, but instead, they sprouted into a bright green mass of chia plants, Salvia hispanica. She was surprised by the plants, but the bigger surprise was the flowers.

Yes, this is the chia plant that was made popular in the 1980s as the “Ch-ch-ch-Chia Pets!” We are not going to make Chia Pets, although you can probably still buy the kits in stores. My great nieces and nephews are going to make Grass People and Grassy Garden Gnomes. The gnome’s idea is in the garden book we used all last year, “Gardening Lab for Kids: 52 Fun Experiments” by Renata Fossen Brown. My great nephews, Max and Eli, will particularly like the googly eyes we will use in making the faces for the gnomes. The steps to making the garden gnomes are very easy and use knee high nylons to hold the soil and grass seed. We will use Burpee cat grass seeds and not the chia seeds.

The twins, Lindsey and Lauren, will like the Grass People idea in the book, “The Gardening Book” by Jane Bull. This project uses sawdust instead of soil and leaves more space to make the faces, plus even shows how to make a nose. Lindsey can make purple glasses out of pipe cleaners for hers, and Lauren will like being able to “cut” the grass into different “hair” styles. The grass seeds sprout in about a week, so they won’t have to wait long for fun.

The chia plant is in the mint family, so my sister will want to contain it, or it will spread and take over her garden! Next time Judy is not sure if her chia seeds are good to eat, she may want to recycle them in a different way. Use your chia seeds in your smoothies instead of planting them. And don’t blame me if you are now singing the “Chch-ch-Chia Pets!” song!

Nancy loves flower gardening almost as much as she does her great nephews and nieces. Her interest in gardening intensified while living in Holland and was perfected with Master Gardener courses.

In the past, there were a limited number of activities geared toward and available for homeschoolers only. However, as the number of families choosing homeschooling has increased, so too has the number of activities available. Homeschool sports, for instance, is an area that has gained momentum in recent years.

SPIRITUAL FOUNDATION

Genesis United Soccer Club is one such opportunity on the southside of Indianapolis. Founded in 2011, their mission is to develop Christ-like character through the disciplines of competitive soccer.

“A group of parents desired to start a club that was board-directed which allowed the coaching to be separate from the administrative aspects of the club. It is a ‘club’ in the sense that we offer varsity men’s and women’s teams and a JV team,” said Steve Dyer, player parent and assistant coach for the men’s team. “We belong to the IHSA [Indiana Homeschool Soccer Association] which is a homeschool fall league, but we also play about half our games against IHSAA teams.”

“The strength of Genesis is the spiritual foundation of the organization,” explained Matt Hogan, the Club’s manager. “Genesis is intentional in providing an environment where an athlete can grow both spiritually and physically. Life principles are taught through a sport while also providing leadership opportunities for all players.”

For instance, midway through each practice, a player leads the team in a brief devotional about a life-applicable topic. Each player is given this opportunity at least once during the season, which “is not only an opportunity to lead their peers but also enables spiritual growth to occur together as a team,” said Hogan.

KICKING DOWN HURDLES

As one might imagine, there were obstacles at the beginning of the Club’s creation. “First, new organizations have to develop their mission and purpose. Genesis has had to determine how competitive we should be,” said Dyer. Playing against stiff competition throughout the Indianapolis area, the Genesis teams consider themselves to be on par.

Hogan went on to explain, “The teams compete against many public and private high schools at the JV and Varsity levels. In addition, we play in the Indiana Homeschool State Tournament and National Homeschool Tournament for varsity homeschool teams.” This past fall, the Genesis women’s team finished second at the National Homeschool Soccer Tournament, and the men’s team finished ninth.

Another obstacle Genesis faced early on was how the Club was perceived by other teams as well as by the community. “Genesis has also had to deal with our outside reputation,” Dyer explained.

“Most people don’t understand that homeschool clubs can be very competitive. When we played a U17 team from Zionsville recently, their coach came over at halftime, and said, ‘I don’t think our guys expected your team to be this good.’

Launched in 2013 as a program of Johnson County Development Corporation, Aspire Johnson County’s promotion of the county and its communities has yielded tangible results. It is staffed by interested volunteers who have a sincere love for the area along with the dedicated leadership team of Co-chairmen Larry Haydon and Brent Tilson, Cheryl Morphew, Dana Monson and Gail Richards.

Having the foresight to realize that employers want to locate in communities that attract potential employees is something that Monson credits Morphew for. “Cheryl knew from her research that companies are aware of the mindset of Millennials,” Monson explained. “This age group looks at regions and then chooses where they want to live. Quality of life is important to them as well as finding a great place to raise children.”

She further elaborated, “Johnson County has six wonderful school corporations that collaborate and work together. There is also a wide variety of housing in several diverse communities ranging from the executive homes in Center Grove, rural residences in Bargersville, small starters in Greenwood and the historic houses in Franklin.”

LIVING AND PLAYING

Several successes have been achieved in communicating the diverse amenities and amusements that the county has to offer.

Although residents know the area is a great place to live and play, many people outside the county do not. The Placemaking Team solved the problem by tapping into resources on the Internet.

“Three years ago, it would not have been possible to find anything about Johnson County on the Internet. Today, there is the Aspire website and a Facebook page,” said Monson.

Four hundred people attended the first Community Career+Education Forum in 2014, and the event grew to 900 participants in 2015.

The emphasis of the forum is advanced manufacturing, health sciences and information technology. Area manufacturers and post-secondary educational institutions set up booths and activities to inform students how they can train for a job located right in the region with minimal debt.

Recently the Talent Team met to plan a panel discussion of former Ivy Tech and Central Nine students. This future meeting will promote the value of career and technical education for students.

LEARNING ABOUT ISSUES

Bringing people together for the purpose of imparting knowledge to enable better planning is one of Aspire’s strengths. The organization does not advocate for one side or another but aims to foster communication that enables the community to consider long range plans involving businesses, residents and visitors.

“We have the unique opportunity to plan for future growth, so it will benefit the community and add to its strengths,” states Monson.

The Infrastructure Team has been active in researching the proposed I-69 expansion. A large community meeting was held, and residents had the opportunity to ask questions about such things as how the project would be funded and the implications of land use.

Although many of Aspire’s successes are noticeable today, the full results of the program’s work may not be visible for several years. “We are planting seeds now and putting a foundation down,” says Monson. “We don’t know how far reaching our work might turn out to be.”

SOUTHSIDE PARENTS OF MULTIPLES

Caring for a single child can be a difficult and sometimes stressful prospect; caring for more than one child can add to the anxiety and strain. Further that with multiple children who are the same age. This is why SouthSide Parents of Multiples (SSPOM) exists: to offer support and encouragement to parents of twins and higher-order multiples.

OPPORTUNITY FOR SUPPORT

“When I had my twins, they were my first babies. I was terrified as a new mother, even more so as a mother of two babies. I wouldn’t take them many places at the beginning because of the hassle of having to take pretty much two of everything,” said Susana Haywood, mother of four and SSPOM member and coordinator of its Children’s Events. “Joining SSPOM made me realize that others were in the same boat, and I was able to get great advice on making outings easier from the other moms that had older twins.”

SSPOM Vice President Nichole Elizondo was driven to find a network of parents who understood what she was going through.

“A lot of us joined because we needed to find someone we could relate to; it makes the biggest difference,” she said.

Each group member comes in with her own experiences at parenting and the chance to offer support and encouragement to other members. Even for those who have twins but also have singletons, they can often relate to those with higher-order multiples.

“I’ve never had the chance to just have two. I had one and then twins, so I’ve mostly been outnumbered … so I can sympathize with parents of higher-order multiples,” said Laurel Castelot, copresident and mother of six boys, ranging in age from 7 to 21 years old. “I can relate to not being able to grab all the kids at once.”

SSPOM is not simply about support and encouragement.

Through it, many friendships have begun and deepened over the years. “SSPOM has been a blessing to me,” said Rebecca Jones, copresident and mother of 8-year-old fraternal BG (boy/girl) twins.

“I have met some wonderful people and now have friends that I will have for the rest of my life.”

OPPORTUNITY FOR EDUCATION

After joining the group, Haywood realized there was another opportunity awaiting her in the public realm: the chance to educate others on twins. “Once I gained the confidence to go out with the twins by myself, it became easier and easier. It was then when I learned another challenge of being a mom of twins: the many stares and questions from curious people. I took that as an opportunity to teach people about twins. It’s even funnier when we have play dates in public places, and there are several sets of twins in the group. People are fascinated by it!” she said.

OPPORTUNITY FOR CONNECTION

Meeting once a month at St. John’s United Church of Christ (just off East Street in Indianapolis), SSPOM runs the gamut on its topics and activities. “It may be as simple as a craft, making freezer meals, Zumba, essential oils or guest lectures on schooling or financial planning. We welcome outside speakers for certain topics. The board determines a tentative schedule with input from members for the year that includes specific programs for each month,” said Jones.

“For example, every year around Christmas, we have a cookie or brownie in a jar program. We always make a lot of extras to hand out to St. John’s Church. We will also have random hobby nights.

Initially founded in 1956 as “SouthSide Mothers of Twins Club,” the group changed its name a few years ago to include higher order multiples and fathers as well.

SSPOM, however, is part of something much larger than itself; this nonprofit is the local club of the national group “Multiples of America” (which can also be found under “National Organization of Mothers of Twins Club”). MUCKY DUCK GRILL AND BAR CENTER GROVE When Center Grove resident Todd Johnson opened the Mucky Duck Grill and Bar at the corner of State Road 135 and Stones Crossing Road, he brought a new vision for a gathering place in the Center Grove community.

Johnson describes it as a family-friendly restaurant atmosphere balanced with a local sports bar offering many large screen TVs for a variety of sporting events. Johnson is working to provide something special every night. Tuesday night is a trivia contests and Thursday is Ladies’ Night.

A recent expansion has added more dining space in a room that includes a dance floor and stage area. On weekends, the room will host Karaoke for all ages with DJ Phat Katz on Friday nights and Saturdays feature live music and dancing. The room can be closed off for private parties or special events.

RepuCare Founder, President and CEO Billie Dragoo has an office so heavily decorated with awards and accolades that it appears to be a trophy room at a Hall of Fame museum.

Dragoo is honored to have received every award proudly displayed in her office.

When asked about her most coveted achievement or award, Dragoo doesn’t hesitate to say “the Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame Junior Achievement Award I received alongside fellow Laureates David Simon (SIMON Group), Dave P. Lindsey (Defender Direct) and Michael Smith (Anthem) the same year.”

Make no mistake, Dragoo is a champion.

She is a celebrated champion of her efforts to help others, namely women business owners. Dragoo’s story is inspirational of course. As a single mom of two young children, she started a business based in her home providing healthcare staffing which has flourished over the years.

But it’s not the struggles she has experienced or a sad tale that defines Dragoo. The truly compelling nature of why crystal trophies litter her office space is simple. It’s Dragoo’s method and her mindset that has brought her success. She didn’t trip the prom queen and throw the PTO moms under the bus; she has simply lived a life of service by reaching out to

help other women around her achieve their dreams.

“You help one woman in business, you help a thousand,” says Dragoo. Her friend, Deborah Collins Stephens, bestselling author and former Silicon Valley venture capitalist, adds. “The ripple effect of helping just one woman cascades to others. The outreach is profound.”

There is still a long way to go with measurable statistics supporting why companies should support diversity in business. Studies show that women-led teams in large companies outperform those led by men. Women-owned businesses give back more to their communities and are found to be more efficient.

“You help one woman in business, you help a thousand.”

When Dragoo was looking for funding to expand her business, she was rejected. “I had a solid pitch deck, and there was not a single institution wanting to invest in my service-based company,” says Dragoo, “until Carol Curran stepped in and put up her own money.”

Carol Curran, CEO of Phoenix Data Corp, created a ripple with her investment in RepuCare, for the money enabled RepuCare to expand and subsequently purchase another womanowned business. The ripple turned into a wave.

This experience propelled Dragoo to facilitate profound policy change in regards to venture money for women.

Most service-driven companies are owned by women. Finding capital for service-based businesses has been nearly impossible. Dragoo takes credit for the start of the Indiana Diversity Investment Fund as she should.

“I believe that if you are in a position to extend your hand and bring someone forward, you do it,” says Curran. “My investment in Billie’s company enabled her to help someone else directly. We are all proud of that.”

Collins Stephens adds, “Billie has opened doors for so many women in this state.

STATE ROAD 37 NOT A SURE THING Many people are under the assumption that the route will obviously be along State Road 37. While, yes, in 2004, State Road 37 was the approved route, by the time they got to Section 6, Holliday said a lot of expansion and development had occurred along State Road 37 which made previous arrangements different, and route options had to be determined.

The area was divided into sections, and general meetings were held with the public and two separate committees to discuss options. Two separate groups have been formed to help provide input to the team, said Holliday. The Stakeholder Working Group (SWG) includes individuals who represent local government agencies within the Section 6 Study Area, individuals who are involved in planning, engineering and public works departments.

The Community Advisory Committee (CAC) includes individuals who represent other organizations in the community, such as homeowner’s associations, school corporations and logistics companies. Both play a part in advising on Section 6.

The Interstate 69 project has been an ongoing discussion since its inception in 2004, starting in Evansville and slowly working its way north.

Now that the project has come to its stop in Martinsville, Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has shifted its focus to Section 6 of the project. This section will take the Interstate from Martinsville to Interstate 465, said Lamar Holliday, Public

They had great success, Holliday said, and the public came up with 27 different alternatives.

The 27 alternatives were then narrowed down by the project team to 14. These 14 options were discussed at additional public meetings, and comments were presented to the team. They took those comments into consideration and further scrutinized the 14 to come down to five options. These five were introduced in June 2015 via news conference.

They are currently taking that information and moving through Tier 2/Phase 2 of the process, which is the environmental study.

It is no small feat, Holliday said, as they have received well over 1,000 comments regarding the alternatives. The alternatives will eventually be reduced to three and included

in a lengthy Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) to be officially handed over to the Federal Highway Administration.

The report is anticipated to be completed in the first quarter of 2017. The Federal Highway Administration will have through 2018 before releasing their final stamp of approval of INDOT’s recommendation.

All routes go through Martinsville and branch off at the continuation at Interstate 69. Alternatives K3 and K4 will utilize current roads while Alternatives B and D will essentially be new terrain. Both Alternatives B and D branch off near Henderson Ford Road and go through Mooresville, connecting to Interstate 70.

State Road 37, otherwise known as Alternative C, is still being considered as an option, and this option, Holliday said, will not be eliminated until the DEIS has been submitted to INDOT. Only the federal highways assessment will eliminate Alternative C if that route is not chosen.

Other alternatives such as Alternative K3 will branch off State Road 37 off State Road 144, while K4 branches off at State Road 37 between Cragen and Perry Roads.

Eventually, the two alternatives meet up near Mann Road where they essentially overlap, said Holliday.

INDOT is asking the public to submit any questions regarding proposed access roads, interchanges and proposed overpasses/ underpasses. All of these changes affect your property or business, and INDOT wants to know your comments as well as any other proposed alternatives.

The next phase will be design and construction, Holliday said. Not all five preliminary alternatives will be carried forward in the DEIS. Cost, environmental impacts, performance measures and public comments will help bring these down to three.

The Johnson County Public Library has been a part of the county since 1911. First establishing on the second floor of another building, the library now has four branches.

After 104 years in service, many small and large changes have been made, most recently the hiring of new Library Director Lisa Lintner after the previous director retired.

“I carry the vision of the library,” Lintner said. “I am responsible for making sure the strategic plan is being followed, and that we are using technology and resources in the best possible way for our patrons to get all the information they need. I am also responsible for the fiscal management of the library. I make sure if we are paying a bill, that we are getting a good deal, and that we are spending taxpayers’ money very wisely because that is very serious to me. I am a taxpayer too, and I expect when my taxes go to an organization, that the money’s well spent. I oversee pretty much every aspect of the library, but I do it with a team of really talented folks.”

Lintner was hired by the Library Board, a staff of nine that works to maintain and better the library services. Her extensive past experiences imply that Lintner is ready and qualified for the job.

“When I was 16 years old, I got a job at the Jasper County Public Library shelving the books in the Children’s Department, and I have to say that was where my love for literature really blossomed,” Lintner said. “I just fell in love with children’s literature. I decided at 16 that I wanted to be a children’s librarian … After college, I got a job at the Louisville Free Public Library as a Children’s Programmer.”

“I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH CHILDREN’S LITERATURE. I DECIDED AT 16 THAT I WANTED TO BE A CHILDREN’S LIBRARIAN … AFTER COLLEGE, I GOT A JOB AT THE LOUISVILLE FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY AS A CHILDREN’S PROGRAMMER.”

After going back to college for a master’s degree, Lintner went back to the Louisville Free Public Library and worked through several jobs. She was the head of the Children’s Department, Teen Services, branch manager, head of Office of School Support, Manager of Branch Services, Assistant Director and finally Interim Library Director before she came to Johnson County.

“I’ve done pretty much everything you can imagine in a public library before I came to Johnson County as Director,” Lintner said.

Growing up a Hoosier and graduating from Ball State, Lintner was not originally planning to move back to Indiana from Kentucky. She applied for the job, but was unsure if she was actually going to take it. Having family here helped make the decision, but her mind was ultimately swayed by something else.

“I am here because of the people who work here and the people who are on the Board. I had three interviews for the job, and I was so impressed with the Board and their passion for this library system. The staff here, I use their expertise all the time to get the job done every single day,” Lintner said.

Jessica Kelly is the middle daughter of Kip and Julie Kelly.

She has lived in the Center Grove area for most of her life and is currently a junior at Center Grove High School.

“The Perfection.” That’s how Center Grove High School head football coach Eric Moore describes the Trojans’ 2015 undefeated 14-0 season. Coach Moore’s team had its most historic season ever: winning the IHSAA Class 6A State Title, winning the powerful Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Championship, securing the number-one ranking in the state and rising into the top 10 in the national polls.

The magnitude of what the Trojans accomplished on the gridiron this past season is not lost on the veteran coach.

“Capping everything off with an undefeated season with a state championship, you just don’t write stuff like that. You never write that on a goal board. Everybody wants to be undefeated state champions.”

SENIOR STRONG

It’s clear that the credit for the Trojans’ amazing season is shared among many, but Coach gives most of the credit to his seniors. “Even though we have 100 kids on the football team, we don’t really have 100 players, so you turn your attention to the senior class. To see what 36 kids [seniors] accomplished is a tremendous task. Your season starts.

You go over and beat Warren Central at home. What a way to start a season!

“Then you go up to Carmel and win the Copper Kettle back, so you now beat the two top teams in the MIC conference at their stadiums already, and now you’re rolling. You beat Ben Davis at home. You win the MIC conference undefeated for the first time for our school. And then you beat Cathedral at home to finish a perfect season. And then you win a sectional, you win a regional, you win a semistate and then you win a state championship!”

Center Grove had seven seniors start and help anchor the defense, which was rated one of the best in the nation. AllAmerican linemen Jovan Swann and Cameron Tidd led the way, creating havoc for opposing offenses.

“The highlight show” is Coach Moore’s nickname for Swann.

“He has a big heart. He loves Center Grove football. He loves his teammates. Traits he brings to the field: great surge up the field pass rush, big long arms to knock balls down. He’s an excellent student, character, role model. He’s a great leader. The kids followed him. They all believed in everything he said and did. He believed we could win. He’s an All-American.” Swann has verbally committed to play college football at Stanford.

“For 33 years, I’ve been involved in high school football, and I came close a lot of times, probably nine, 10 times, but never was able to get over the hump and really complete ‘the perfection’ that we call it. Thinking back on it now, you really start to appreciate the blue medal the kids got and the rings the kids ordered and the plaques that say ‘Undefeated’ on them and all the articles written about them. It’s very much deserved. Is it a little bit overkill?

No, it’s not. It’s never happened here before.”

Tidd has also committed to play Division I college football at Vanderbilt. Moore appreciates Tidd’s quiet strength. “Not much comes out of his mouth. Positive always. He’s a winner. He’s stoic.

He never gets too high or too low. He did his job. High character.

Just a champion.” Tidd was also a state champ during the spring 2015 track and field season with a school record throw in the discus.

But the depth of the Trojans extended well beyond Swann and Tidd. Coach Moore had a smile as he described the strengths of his seniors: DEVON WILSON, Defensive End: “He’s a savvy player. He’s not the fastest player, but he’s very strong. He really understood football. Just a solid football player. He’s going to Division III to play football. I think he’ll have a great career.”

BLAKE MORAN, Cornerback: “He’s very tall, very athletic.

He’s a hurdler in track as well. He would go up and catch the ball.

He had an interception or two. His open-field tackling was an improvement more than anyone in our program. He carries himself well and is a fine young man.”

TYLER PENCE, Cornerback: “Voted by our kids as the most improved defensive player. He’s a ballplayer. He knows how to play football. He made some key interceptions. His open field tackling was unbelievable. It was good enough to be recognized as all-state.

Very proud of his effort, and hopefully he’ll continue to play college football.”

CONNOR STEEB, Safety: “Anything that came from the back end physically was Connor Steeb. He looks like he plays. He’s muscular. He’s tough. He’s fast. And he’ll hit you. He really pounded some people this year. He’ll go to college and play Division II or III football. An excellent student-athlete. He’s a champion on the field as far as attitude and commitment.”

JACKSON SODREL, Linebacker and Defensive Captain: “The heart of the defense. He was a two-year starter, three-year player. Good speed. Excellent athleticism. Unbelievable hands.

Understood the game. He breaks his leg in game nine. Got back on the field for the state championship game. It did my heart good to see your captain of your team run around out there with his team.”

WILL SMITHEY, Defensive Back and Punt Returner: “Punt returns – solid hands. He was like the duct tape on defense in the secondary. He can play any of those spots. For the first time, we had a kid that would stop punts, catch punts. He really kept the field position turned upside down for the offense. Will is a spectacular baseball player as well as over a 4.0 student. He’s going to play college baseball somewhere.”

JOEY SIDEREWICZ, Quarterback and Offensive Captain: “This kid loves football. Joey knew his job and role every day: Help us win; don’t try to do things you can’t do; keep plays alive; be smart; and control the football game. He just did that for so long.

His team leadership, his focus, he’s a champion and broke some [school] records. He’s probably going to a Division III school to play football. I think he’ll have a great college career as well.”

He wasn’t ready to play, but he deserved it for being there every day for four straight years never missing a practice. Being able to send him out there to take that last snap is awesome. It really pulled on my heart.”

NATE SNYDER, Kicker: “Snyder is crazy and full of energy.

He was a great distance kicker. Very precise on field goals. Could kick the long field goals. Got a real shot in college to continue to do that.”

“The snapper, the punter and kicker probably worked harder than any three I’ve ever had at their spot, so when we go out there, we

can punt 45 yards; we can kick off to the end zone, and we don’t have to worry about snaps. Our special teams were phenomenal because of that.”

THE PERFECTION

While the players may not truly understand what they’ve accomplished, Coach Moore encouraged them to take it all in.

“For 33 years, I’ve been involved in high school football, and I came close a lot of times, probably nine, 10 times, but never was able to get over the hump and really complete ‘the perfection’ that we call it.

“Thinking back on it now, you really start to appreciate the blue medal the kids got and the rings the kids ordered and the plaques that say ‘Undefeated’ on them and all the articles written about them. It’s very much deserved. Is it a little bit overkill? No, it’s not.

It’s never happened here before.”

VISION THERAPY SEE BETTER WITH OUR BRAIN

It is commonly believed that 20-20 vision means perfect vision; however, there are many vision problems unrelated to clarity.

These include lazy eyes, visual processing problems and vision problems resulting from strokes or concussions. These problems cannot be fixed by glasses or contacts. Prescriptions typically just correct clarity of vision and not how the eyes team or focus, but one way to help is through the process of vision therapy.

“Vision therapy is similar to physical therapy or occupational therapy, but it’s therapy for the eyes,” Developmental Optometrist Erin Buck of Greenwood Vision Development Center said. “What most people may not realize is that vision actually takes place in the brain. We actually do not see anything until our brain tells us what we are looking at, so with vision therapy, we actually are rehabilitating the brain, so that it is helping the eyes work more efficiently.”

Not every patient comes in with the same problem, but there are many different types of problems that vision therapy can correct.

“We see a wide range of patients,” Developmental Optometrist Jenna Liechty of VisionQuest Eyecare said. “Each practice will have maybe a different patient base that they are most comfortable with, but we get referrals from many different places that are seeing children and adults. That’s a common misconception that vision therapy is just for children when in fact it can be very valuable

for adults as well, especially the ones that have sustained a concussion or any form of a brain injury. Vision therapy can be very important for any patient that has had a neurological event.”

However, it is more common for a child to need vision therapy than an adult, especially since the vision problem can be taken care of while the patient is still a child. Many parents and teachers have trouble catching a vision problem in a small child though because many of the symptoms correlate with that of ADHD, ADD or dyslexia.

“A lot of the kids that we work with are misdiagnosed as ADHD, and it’s really just their visual system getting in their way,” Buck said. “Vision is your dominant sense, and you gather the majority of information through your visual system. So if you’re not able to do that, then you have to rely on other means.

“So we’re going to talk to our neighbors and use our auditory system, or we’re going to use our tactile system and feel things and want to touch. Also, when the eyes are not working well together, it makes the print on the page kind of jump around, and it is just not comfortable to look at. So instead of trying to force their way through that or get a headache or get sleepy, children just kind of give up and then they are dazing off, appearing like they had ADHD.”

“Since awareness is so key in this, I always will recommend to parents that if they have a struggling student, they need to see a developmental optometrist, someone who specializes in vision therapy and the development of the vision system,” Liechty said. “They need to see a developmental optometrist for an evaluation to rule out vision problems that might be contributing to their difficulty. This is where it gets hard because there are a lot of optometrists out there, and most of them do not specialize in the visual system. They specialize in glasses and contacts and all different types of eye diseases, but they do not specialize in vision therapy and the functioning, comfort and ease of the vision system.”

“I think vision therapy offers hope for struggling readers and their families,” Buck said. “So many times when I sit back here in my office and I have the consultation with the parents, their kids have been struggling for years, and they’re kind of at the end of their rope. They have tried so many different things, they are spending hours at night working on homework and everybody is just frustrated. The nice thing is these vision problems that we see are very correctable with the vision therapy program. It is very successful. So, if parents think there is a problem, then I would highly encourage them to get what I call a Developmental Vision Evaluation.”

After the evaluation is done, vision therapy can start for the patient. Therapy eventually helps the patient read and see more efficiently.

LADIES OF THE HARD COURT Behind every Center Grove High School team or club, there is a community. The community consists of the coach or leader, assisting staff, student athletes/participants, parents and fans. The coach with his or her staff, the students and the parents all bring a level commitment in making memorable and successful seasons.

The Lady Trojan basketball team is not any different from the other sports or clubs.

They are a chosen family, brought together for four years by a sport and a team of girls that love it.

The girls’ basketball team is under the leadership of head coach Shawn Sanders.

Coach Sanders is appreciative of the support that he receives from his parents.

The support helps bring fun to the season and strengthens the basketball family.

One way that the team builds relationships is by having several gatherings for the girls and their families. While other teams may have dinners, the Lady Trojans have socials. The socials are gatherings filled with traditions that do not just consist of the athletes and parents but also all the coaches.

An example is the preseason social that serves as a meet and greet for the new season. It is a gathering of all teams which are the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams. The team gathers for socials to celebrate Christmas and the end of the season.

Sanders also expresses his appreciation of the support of the team parents, or Parent Club, because he is able to focus on his job of coaching. He states, “I am very satisfied with the help we get from our Parent Club.

They meet regularly and looks for ways to help the coaching staff and me to focus on other things.”

It culminates especially when the basketball team celebrates a sectional championship with senior parents after the four years of working together with the common goal of successful and enjoyable seasons.

While Sanders fully appreciates the support of the parents, he does express a desire for an increased fan presence, specifically from the student body. Sanders states, “Girls’ sports in particular have a hard time drawing interest from the students.” Even with his hopes that student body support increases, he is grateful for the loyal fan base that never fails in showing pride in his team.

Kelli Luallen understands the foundation of the CGHS Women’s basketball team.

Daughter Lauren Rau is a senior varsity player, while her older daughter Alex is a former player and former assistant coach.

She even has the treasured memories of Lauren’s freshman season as daughter Alex was an assistant coach. “That season was so much fun for me as a mom watching two of my daughters involved in something they both love.”

Lauren committed earlier this year to play basketball at Lipscomb University. Luallen recalls that as Lauren began to first walk, she began to dribble a basketball as well. Playing

at the collegiate level is a longtime dream coming true. “Every parent wants to see their child accomplish a tightly held goal,” Luallen reflects with pride.

With all of the years cheering for the Trojan Women’s basketball team, Luallen has a balanced perspective that all parents, of daughters particularly, should emulate.

“Be a great listener and your daughter’s biggest fan. Most daughters are naturally very hard on themselves, especially at this level of play. I’ve encouraged all of my daughters to have a short memory where mistakes are concerned and to not stumble over something behind them.

Tomorrow is a new day. I have found that encouragement and remaining positive goes a really long way!”

Leigh and her husband, Mike, have called Center Grove their home for 14 years. They chose Center Grove as the ideal place to raise their two children, Eric and Julia. She is an active member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church where she writes an online Bible study.

The local chapter of the DAR gathered these items together and began the official museum in a room at the county courthouse, moved it in 1963 to the Suckow home and again in 1989 into its current building where the Historical Society is now its guardian.

The county budget pays for the operating expenses of the Johnson County Museum of History, including maintenance, utilities and the salaries of two full-time and four part-time employees. The museum is largely maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers. Other expenses are paid with donations and endowments.

“As spring approaches, the nights remain cold while the days get longer and warmer. This fluctuation in air temperature assists sugar maple tree sap to ‘run’ from the branches down to its roots. By tapping a tree, sugar makers can gather the sap, boil the liquid and bottle the sweet delicacy into what we know today as maple syrup.”

— Description of the maple syrup season by a sugar maker hobbyist The last gasps of winter brings our state’s first harvest of the year — Indiana maple syrup. In celebration of the maple-sugaring season and the coming of spring, the National Maple Syrup Festival (NMSF) will host a three-weekend event in Indiana. The quaint town of Nashville hosts the first two weekends, “Tap the Town” and the “Festival” with the last weekend, “Indiana Maple Weekend,” being held statewide.

Tap the Town: February 27-28

Nestled in the heart of Nashville, Indiana, the Village will sprout into a sugar bush (maple syrup farm) for “Tap the Town” February 27-28. Participants become sugar makers for a day, learning to capture the tree’s sap by a technique called “tapping the tree.” For the length of the Festival, the tree’s identification will then be by the name of the individual, group or family who tapped it. In anticipation of a large number of participants, early registration for this event is required on the Festival website.

To open the Festival weekend, Nashville High School invites the public to the school’s cafeteria for a high flippin’ pancake breakfast extravaganza both Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6, from 8-11 a.m. “John Young, the owner of Louisville’s Chris Cakes, will again delight customers with his famous pancake grilling and flipping expertise,” said NMSF director Eric Freeman. “John and his pancake-making machine produce 120 pancakes every five minutes.

He then wings each pancake through the air and onto your plate … as long as you keep your plate still.”

No matter what the weather forecast, the Festival in Brown County State Park is the place where it’s ‘sappening. The 1930 two-story, fieldstone shelter house plays host to the 2016 Festival.

With its warm and inviting fireplaces, visitors can come and go as they please, immersing themselves in everything maple. Back by popular demand, visitors can experience the Maple March, a 30-minute interpretive walk. Leaving every hour on the half-hour from the shelter’s lower level, park naturalists exhibit such topics as recognizing a maple tree in winter, tapping the tree sap and (my favorite) tasting the sap right from the tree.

Before or after the Maple March, visitors can step back to a time when this land was still wild and unbridled. Descendants of the Delaware and Shawnee tribes, who lived in this area, lead festivalgoers back to the 1700s.

How many types of identity theft exist? Are data breaches that significant? Lately, known data breaches abound. Our family has been notified of three breaches this year alone. How about you?

There are currently at least eight types of identity theft that apply to individuals. Businesses and government agencies are also targeted.

We’re heard the news reports. Multiple large-scale data breaches have affected millions of individuals with Personal Identifying Information (PII) stolen. To get a handle on this growing issue, we’ll focus on personal IDentity Theft (IDT) and what options exist to deal with the legal and financial problems IDT can cause.

FINANCIAL IDENTITY THEFT

First, consider that there is a proven, dark underworld striving day and night to get your personal data, preferably gleaned from a single data mining campaign reaping millions of individuals PII. Why? Money. Lots and lots of money.

Credit card fraud or money being scooped from bank accounts often comes to mind when first thinking about IDT. However, Kroll, a leading risk consulting and mitigation company, states their investigative and restoration work for financial IDT accounts is not the most reported type of fraud.

“Information management is big business,” notes Cindy Tollar, Greenwood resident and a Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist for 11 years. Her observation is verified by multiple companies in cybersecurity.

The five most common ID complaints in 2014 were: 1) government documents or benefits fraud, 38.7 percent; 2) credit card, 17.4 percent; 3) phone or utilities fraud, 12.5 percent; 4) bank fraud, 8.2 percent; and 5) employment-related fraud.

Trustwave Global Security does forensic investigations on threat intelligence and actual data breaches. Their 2015 annual report is based on studying 574 data compromises across 15 countries during 2014. The report can be downloaded online for free. Here are a few lowlights:

Credit freezes are urged by some experts. That type of freeze has pros and cons. One key factor to consider is a credit freeze only takes care of new financial accounts; they do not protect your established accounts. Nor do they protect you from a thief taking control of your current bank accounts. However, a Kroll blog writes, “With a freeze in place, any application for credit or other services will likely be denied, thus reducing the chances of an identity thief successfully using your identity to obtain some sort of credit.”

A hacker may “invest” $5,900 in a malware campaign. Thirty days later, the hacker could have earned $84,000. The Return on Investment is a tidy 1,425 percent. And what about business data breaches that could affect you? Trustwave found that the average length of time from intrusion into a business system to containment MEDICAL IDENTITY THEFT is 111 days.

Stamm researched the websites, particularly the Summary of Benefits and Breach Plans links for LifeLock, AllClearID (think Anthem), ProtectMyID (with Experian), Identity Guard, IDShield (with Legal Shield and Kroll) and what a rider on homeowner insurance policies offered. Plus, Stamm searched for credible news about each business.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website states LifeLock made a $12 million penalty settlement to them in 2010 for false advertising. The FTC again slammed LifeLock this past summer for false advertising.

An AllClearID representative on the phone claimed that the coverage Anthem set up covered medical, criminal, tax and financial ID theft.

Stamm pointed out to the representative that the fine print on the website about the benefits stated that only financial accounts tied to a person’s SSN were covered. After checking with her supervisor, the representative agreed that the fine print was accurate and apologized.

A TINY OBSESSION Last month, I purposely did not write about resolutions. Did you make a resolution before New Year’s? It’s early February and it is OK to start your resolution now.

According to a list compiled by Newsday, the most common resolutions in 2015 were: 1. Lose weight/exercise more 2. Quit smoking 3. Eat Healthy 4. Learn something new 5. Spend less, save more

6. Drink less alcohol 7. Travel 8. Give back to the community 9. Spend more time with family 10. Relax

Did you select a similar resolution? How are you doing? Are you doing it alone? If so that makes it more challenging to keep the resolution. I have found it is best to find someone to join me in the resolution to keep me honest.

Inviting your spouse, friend or co-worker can help with accountability. This individual can help with getting to the gym, support efforts to reduce smoking, or help review a budget to reduce unnecessary expenditures.

It is important to be realistic with your expectations. This includes the initial decision to make the specific resolution. Some thought should go into the what, how, when and why? We will use the first resolution as our example.

‘How’ is the next consideration. For example, for some people joining a gym may be the solution to losing weight. Before committing to a membership, be sure the classes and equipment matches exercises you would like to try. Ask for a trial membership.

Many places provide a trial period. It’s hard enough to find the right environment, let’s not throw money away unnecessarily.

Local churches and schools have facilities and programs for the community as well.

Your personal schedule should also be considered. How busy is your life? Between work and home, do you have time to stop somewhere to work out? ‘When’ can be hard to narrow down if you feel overwhelmed with your existing schedule.

‘Why’ are you doing it? This is the one word that we should be honest when answering. Are you doing it for yourself or for others?

If you are doing it for yourself, you will find that you will continue to work out. It’s not wrong to do it for others, but you benefit first and foremost, family and friends secondary.

It is OK to falter and regroup. If your approach isn’t working, look for others. Check in with your accountability partner when you’re losing motivation. The accountability partner should help you regain your focus or help find an alternate approach.

Resolutions don’t have to start at New Year’s; so don’t feel that you can’t start now. Better late than never, right?

The ‘what’ is easy on a broad level. But it is important to narrow the focus. Specificity is key. If you are exercising, what are the one or two areas you want to improve or is there a running distance you are trying to achieve? Goals should be measurable; you must have a method to gauge your progress.
