| Kate Rhoten here’s a myriad of workout options in the Center Grove area. One has quietly grown from mostly word of mouth as well as receiving the Indy A-List Award for Best Boot Camp this year. (http://bit.ly/atCGKettleBell) It’s the Center Grove School of Strength Kettlebell Boot Camp at Center Grove High School.

Marty Mills is a weightlifting and conditioning teacher at Center Grove High School who works before, during, and after school to help people become stronger and healthier. He works with athletes and non-athletes alike. He is passionate about physical fitness and helping people become stronger and healthier. Mills’ athletic background is in football and wrestling. He attended college on a wrestling scholarship, but when he was done, he missed competition so he began powerlifting. As he started teaching, he was competing in powerlifting where he set state records, won national championships, and made the world team. Mills felt that there was more to being a great athlete than weightlifting or sport-specific activities. Mills said, “I researched what the best athletes were doing. Russians dominated sports, and it goes back to Russian training systems. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, the Russian kettlebell workout was making its way into training programs for weightlifters, U.S. Olympic athletes, and the military as more coaches from Russia and elsewhere were hired to train people here in the U.S.”

“Russian Kettlebell training is a philosophy of big whole body, total body athletic movements on your feet,” Mills said. He has taken this holistic approach and incorporated it into all workouts for the student athletes and the boot camp. With terms like snatch, clean and press, swing, it can be intimidating; and it is a hard workout. Mills tested this workout himself before gradually adding it to the workout routines from 2004 to full integration in 2007. In his classes, Mills would state, “You can do this the rest of your life; it’s the best training system. There was a great run for about 2 years in a variety of sports at Center Grove with more championships being won than before,” stated Mills. In 2008-09, students would tell Mills he should offer this before school for the community. It took 1 ½ years for Mills to feel ready. In the summer of 2010, Mills offered a 6 a.m. boot camp via three emails to the CG Staff, Power Club, and a person at Eli Lilly and Company. “If 20 people showed up, it would be worth doing. I had no idea that 40 people would show up for that first class,” Mills said. “Then it doubled until it sold out.” He started hearing that some people would like to come earlier, but he wasn’t convinced more than five people would show up for a 5:15 a.m. class. He added Tyler Small, a former student and a certified Russian Kettlebell Instructor, to help when the additional class started. “I was surprised at the number of people at the 5:15 a.m. workout; there hardly was room to work out,” states Mills. After six months, both classes were sold out. Recently, four more participants have become certified Russian Kettlebell Instructors. Mills has a lot of support from the administration, staff, students, and community members. Mills says, “What’s it like before school? It is a whole bunch of really good people that work hard, do their best, get better every day, care about each other; that’s just the culture in here. We have people coming from different backgrounds; they create that small community good feeling within the school. And I like that.” Mills said, “I am proud that I have more people doing this than anybody. I got way more people doing this stuff than anybody, I have somehow created an environment where people want to come in and do a really hard training system, and I’ve convinced them that it’s fun. And they like it.” To learn more, visit kettlebellbootcamps.blogspot.com. cg Kate Rhoten is a wife, mother of 2 boys, financial coach/owner of 4 Walls Financial, columnist & freelance writer for CG Newsletter, and living our dream debt free. j a n u a ry 2 0 1 3

Keeping Children Active Many children are finding a lifetime of skills in fun activities that get them out and moving. In this article, we look at three programs where children of different ages, backgrounds, and abilities are exercising, having fun, and learning life skills along the way.

TFL Kids

Rainbow’s END

Another program engaged in supporting the whole being is The Gathering Place’s Totally Fit Life (TFL). This program utilizes biblical scripture verses to help in the transformation of six fitness behaviors: Spiritual, physical, nutritional, mental, emotional, and directional. This approach brings about healthy relationships, spiritual growth, and living a purpose-filled life.

Stephany Jenkins founded Rainbow’s END (Enabled Not Disabled) after two of her physical therapy patients, Molly McGeehan and Christopher Tritch, asked if a swim team for special needs children could be started. After a lot of planning and hard work, the dream became a reality. In 2000, six students, along with their personal instructors, splashed in the water for the first time. Today, 33 volunteers swim alongside the class of 27 swimmers of all different needs and abilities.

“The kid’s program is a simplified version of this approach,” said Pam Mroz, fitness director of The Gathering Place. “We use a lot of encouragement, and we make it fun.” Every Monday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., TFL Kids serves the needs of home-schooled children, ages 7-12. During my visit, the 45-minute class mixed cardio exercises with kid-sized hydraulic resistance machines. The cardio activities were fun – and sometimes outright hilarious. For instance, after stretching, the children were taught a team sport called noodle hockey. Each player was equipped with a swimming noodle for a stick and told to get the ball to their team’s net. However, the children found out the sticks didn’t want to cooperate — they kept bending. Giggles could be heard from both sides of the court. They did eventually figure it out. After the team time, the children went upstairs to work out on the resistance equipment. Mroz explained that the equipment allows for all strength levels. Each child worked with an instructor to know the appropriate positioning for each machine. Once each child had rotated and practiced on all seven machines, they gathered in a circle for prayer and devotions.

The organization’s philosophy is a come-out-and-try-it approach. If it doesn’t seem to work after the first class, the student does not have to commit to the program. Rainbow’s END teaches taekwondo, biking, dancing, kite flying, swimming, and running. “Our focus is to provide individual sports that can be used for a lifetime,” Jenkins said. “For instance, our newest class, Lose the Training Wheels in Five Days, has given many families the chance to bike together for the first time.”

At the end of class, I asked Rachel Horn, one of the students, what she wanted other children to know about this class. “You will grow. You will reach your goals. God made us all different. We just need to be humble and patient. Come have fun … join in!” 8

center grove c o m m u n i t y n e ws l e tt e r

CenterGrove_January_2013.indd 8

Rainbow’s END nurtures positive selfimage and working with others. It also challenges children to overcome limits and boundaries. Center Grove resident Nikki Miller agreed. “Our daughter, Sydney, wants to be like everyone else and feel included. Here, it doesn’t matter what special need these children have. These swimmers are all equal,” Miller said with a smile. “Sydney enjoys swimming, the camaraderie, the swim meets, and the awards banquet. The swimming program has allowed Sydney to have pride in her accomplishments and boost her self esteem.”

Rainbow’s END changes lives. It teaches and gives a gift that helps the student’s mind, body, and spirit…every step of the way.

Special Olympics of Johnson County Stories of children reaching a milestone are shared every day at the Special Olympics of Johnson County (SOJC). Fun activities guide their programs. This organization has many opportunities for a child with intellectual disabilities. Starting at age two, parents can take advantage of Play Skills, a unique program run by therapists who begin introducing sports skills to the children.

Once a child turns eight, SOJC suggests a child goes through the class called Testing Recreational Activities and Improving Nutrition. “This class helps discover a child’s strengths and weaknesses. With this information, the parents can help guide their child into a sport that better suits them,” said SOJC County Coordinator Rita Abell.

Special Olympics provides year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of sports, explained Rita. Presently the organization is hosting basketball and cheerleading. Starting in March, swimming, along with track and field, will be on the roster. “Becoming a coach for the SOJC was a very eye-opening experience for me. These athletes blow me away with their determination to learn,” said Center Grove teacher and SOJC Swim Coach Samantha Dikeman. “They share their abilities, not their disabilities. We all have fun.” cg

have some exposure before they get to the middle school club sport level. That is where Crosse Your Heart comes in.

Center Grove Junior Alyssa Fuller Creates Camp for Girls | Dann Veldkamp Lacrosse is the fastest-growing sport in North America, and women’s lacrosse is fast becoming a standard program in America’s middle and high schools. In Center Grove schools, lacrosse is a club sport in both middle school and high school. Last year, Center Grove Junior Alyssa Fuller recognized this as an opportunity to reach out to younger girls. She started Crosse Your Heart, a lacrosse camp for girls in the first through fourth grades. 10

Played on a field similar in size to a soccer field, lacrosse teams operate on the field more like hockey players on ice. There are three defined positions: defense, midfield, and attack. Player position determines location on the field and the acceptable actions. The game is played with la crosse or “the stick,” and is played in two 15-to-20minute halves. Fuller says that onfield communication is essential for a team to be successful. Being a relatively new sport in the area, it is an opportunity for young athletes to learn new skills and perhaps excel in ways that they would not in other sports. Alyssa noted that kids often know more about the sport than their parents. This results in friendlier games, with less parental coaching from the sidelines. However, it is still beneficial if the players

center grove c o m m u n i t y n e ws l e t t e r

CenterGrove_January_2013.indd 10

Last year, Alyssa and her five assistant coaches served 18 young girls using the field near Mount Auburn United Methodist Church on Stones Crossing Road. They also had access to the building in the case of inclement weather. The Center Grove Lacrosse Club and U.S. Lacrosse, the national governing body of lacrosse, loaned equipment to the program. Crosse Your Heart provided the girls with Bibles, snacks, and Crosse Your Heart pens, journal, tee shirt, and hair ribbon. Sponsors, and a personal contribution from Alyssa herself, provided the funds for these additional items. Last year, the camp met twice a week between mid-June and mid-July. The cost was $15 per girl. The girls arrived at 10:30 and spent 45 minutes in lacrosse drills. They then enjoyed a snack for 20 minutes and concluded with a Bible lesson. Many of the participants plan to return this year. To help extend the program beyond the mechanics of lacrosse, Fuller also gave each girl a pink ball imprinted with a special word, such as happiness, hope, prayer, or caring.

| j a n u a ry 2 0 1 3

12/31/2012 3:46:18 PM

The girls were then encouraged to think about the word on their ball for a week and then to share with the group what they learned as they thought about the word throughout the week. Alyssa also prepared a “Life Choices” road map to help the girls understand that their choices have consequences. Different paths had different results, revealed only when someone “went down” that path. This year Crosse Your Heart hopes to expand into Franklin and Mooresville and register 50 girls. Registration is $30. Of course, the ministry requires facilities in these locations and Alyssa is currently searching for places that offer both a suitable playing field and an accessible building for protection from any possible bad weather. The organization has written severe weather procedures, based on the national standards established by U.S. Lacrosse. They also carry liability insurance through U.S. Lacrosse. Planning for this season is in full swing and the organization is looking both for new girls to join the program and for sponsors to help insure a quality experience. If you are interested in attending, have a location in Franklin or Mooresville that might work for the ministry, would like to make a donation, or simply want to learn more, you can visit their web site at CrosseYourHeart.com, call Aly Fuller on her cell phone (650-799-0378), or email her at alyssa@crosseyourheart.com. cg

the climb: Relief for Parkinson’s Disease | Dann Veldkamp

Assistance is available for those who need it.

An estimated one and a half million people in the United States have Parkinson’s Disease (PD). According to the National Parkinson Foundation (www.parkinson.org), this is “more persons than those diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, ALS (or Lou Gehrig’s disease), muscular dystrophy, and myasthenia gravis combined.” The average age of onset is 60 years, but it can affect younger people as well. The cause is unknown, and there is currently no cure. However, those with PD are not without hope. In 2007, David Zid published his book Delay the Disease. It demonstrated that particular exercises, performed on a regular basis, could slow the progression of the symptoms of PD such as tremors, loss of flexibility, stability, and strength. These proven exercises are at the core of a faithbased program in the Center Grove area. Doug Springer, who has PD himself, started The Climb – Greenwood. A program he heard about in Noblesville, affiliated with the Indiana Parkinson Foundation, inspired him to start the same program on the south side of the metro area. Indiana Parkinson Foundation is a nonprofit organization with the goal of improving the lives of those with Parkinson’s Disease. Don Waterman and his family formed the organization based on Christian values. In particular, they support research for a cure that does not use or harm human embryonic stem cells, educates and connects individuals with Parkinson’s Disease, and increases the public awareness and education of PD.

“Without having it [PD], God would not be able to use me in the way He has. I find myself able to once again do things that I thought I had lost,” such as jumping rope, playing pingpong and riding a bike.” - Doug Springer The twice-a-week class is led by Lindsay Conn, a certified physical therapist who is certified in the special exercises defined in Mr. Zid’s book. Evidence-based research shows that exercises, especially those that focus on mobility and balance, have a positive effect on the symptoms of PD. While some of the exercises require assistance or some space to conduct, many can be done while seated or simply standing. Participants in the class vary greatly in

their flexibility, strength, and stability, but all can benefit from the exercises. Springer says he is “fortunate to have PD. Without having it, God would not be able to use me in the way He has. I find myself able to once again do things that I thought I had lost,” such as jumping rope, playing ping-pong and riding a bike. The weekend class meets on Saturdays at 9 a.m. at New Hope Church on West Fairview Road, just west of Pleasant Grove Elementary school. The weekday class meets on Tuesday afternoons starting at 4 p.m. at Greenwood Christian Church, 2045 Averitt Road. Participants are encouraged to bring someone to assist, but volunteers are always on hand to help those who attend alone. The group also sponsors a Caregivers Support Group that meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Bob Evans restaurant on State Road 135 in Greenwood. They are also looking for a single location that is large enough for the group and can provide an area to store the equipment needed for the class. Those interested in the class can contact Doug Springer at 317-946-5340 or via email at douglas. springer@att.net.
