publisher’s welcome | Jody Veldkamp Mother’s Day, or is it Mothers Day? According to Hallmark, it is singular possessive, but I like it plural. Why, because in May we don’t just celebrate our mom we celebrate all moms. If we had the room to publish every entry you would see many things contribute to being a mom. Sometimes it is the ability to get through a crisis and sometimes it is as simple as Oreos and milk. There is no doubt that our Mom of the Year is a special mom, but my mom, and your mom are special too. So here’s to “moms” where ever they may be. I want to mention a mom who is no longer with us, Sherrie Buchanan. Sherrie did not just help her kids, her work with the Center Grove Education Foundation help many of our kids. In her honor the first “Sherrie’s Ride” will be held for June 15. The event is a scenic country bike ride and the proceeds go to the “Sherrie Buchanan Scholarship Fund.” Details are coming together as I write this but by the time you read it you can find all the details on our website, AtCenterGrove.com. Look for the “Sherrie’s Ride” logo on the right side.

May is also the start of the “golf outing season.” This month you can help raise funds for the Johnson County Humane Society, the Rotary college scholarships from the local Rotary Club or support Greenwood Christian Academy. You can find details on the events page of our website. Looking ahead to June I want to make you aware of a special issue, “Our Communities 2020.” We are going to look at the great things happening in Greenwood, Bargersville and the unincorporated area of Center Grove. We also are going look ahead at opportunities and challenges in the years to come. For June we are going to expand our distribution area and we will be giving away copies of the magazine at the Greenwood Freedom Festival. In the middle of the issue will be a fourpage, tear-out, take-along, guide to the Greenwood Freedom Festival. The guide will be available at the Festival as well. If you own a business and want to reach people from all over the area, the guide is a great advertising opportunity. Yup, a shameless sales pitch right here in the Publishers Welcome. If you want to learn more, give me a call, 317-507-4334. One final plug for a mom, Dann’s mother-in-law Lucy Stravers hand-makes all of our word search puzzles. Last month we dropped a line from the puzzle and drove many puzzle people crazy. Sorry about that, but please don’t blame anyone’s mom. cg

ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNERS The Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce honored six outstanding business people and companies at its April 16 Annual Chamber Celebration. The Chamber presents the awards in order to recognize outstanding business achievement, remarkable construction, and extraordinary Chamber engagement. Mike Kensill of Lee & Associates Real Estate Services was named Ambassador of the Year. Garnet Vaughan of The Marketing Department was awarded Member of the Year. Randy Faulkner and Associates received a Pride and Progress Award. Pilsung ATA Martial Arts, Simons Bitzer & Associates, and Endress+Hauser each earned a Salute Award. “This year’s award winners prove that a positive attitude and confident vision are the foundation to business success. They chose their destiny. We are grateful for the way they have

improved our business community by creating jobs and helping to build a stronger sense of place in Greenwood,” said Christian Maslowski, Greater Greenwood Chamber of Commerce executive director.

Ambassador of the Year

Ambassadors are volunteers who proactively coach members on how to navigate their membership services and help make introductions to other business leaders. The Ambassador of the Year Award is given to the outstanding Ambassador based on the volunteer’s merit and involvement throughout the previous calendar year. The 2013 winner, Mike Kensill, is a commercial real estate broker with Lee & Associates Real Estate Services. A Purdue graduate, Mike has over 25 years of experience in commercial real estate in central and southern Indiana. He has been involved in sales, leasing,

The Ambassador of the Year award winner is determined by a vote among peers. Other volunteers noted Kensill’s dedication to helping other businesses’ success and energy made him a standout.

Chamber Member of the Year

The Chamber Member of the Year Award recognizes an engaged, passionate, and committed business person who goes above and beyond to activate his/her company’s membership and to promote the Chamber. The board of directors named Garnet Vaughan of The Marketing Department the 2013 winner. She has been an active and engaged Greater Greenwood Chamber member since 1998. Garnet graduated from Butler University and began her marketing career with Melvin Simon and Associates, now Simon Property Group, where she wrote and produced the television and radio advertising for the company’s malls across the country. She has traveled the country teaching concepts in marketing to new marketing directors and has received the International Council of Shopping Centers’ highest honor for excellence in marketing, the “Maxi Award,” as well as their “Distinguished Service Award” for her industry contributions. Garnet is as a member of Greenwood’s Redevelopment Commission and serves on the marketing committee for the Johnson County Community Foundation. At the Chamber, Garnet has served on countless committees for communications, events, membership, program development, and strategic planning. She served on the board of

Friends and colleagues have used words like “giving,” “dedicated,” “creative,” “smart,” “committed,” “insightful,” and “tenacious” to describe Garnet. She is also a connector of people, finding solutions and referring members wherever able.

Randy Faulkner & Associates, Inc., wanted to keep intact a piece of rich Greenwood heritage; about 80% of the 1907 brick was retained during the renovation. While conserving a piece of history, the restoration of Polk Place helps foster a positive image of the Greenwood community.

Pride and Progress Award

The Pride and Progress Award celebrates a business that made outstanding design efforts in the construction of a new business or renovation of an existing property because they have positively contributed to their business success and improved the community’s overall appearance. Salute Awards

The Chamber’s Salute Award recognizes a Chamber member business that has demonstrated success in one or more of the following areas: growth and stability; commitment to quality; creative/unique solutions to

challenges; and entrepreneurial spirit.

Pilsung ATA Martial Arts took the Salute Award in the small business category. Rose Myers accepted the award. The Salute Award (small business category) was given to Pilsung ATA Martial Arts. Pilsung ATA Martial Arts is a leadership school with the mission to create quality leaders and prepare our community for a better tomorrow. The school started in 2003 in a single room with 6 students. It has grown to occupy a 3,100-square-foot facility with over 140 students ages 4 to 64 and has grown staff by 50%. This growth occurred during the recession when families eliminated recreational programming and other schools failed. Pilsung is active in the community, providing leadership development programs and speaking to schools regarding bullying prevention, goal setting, respect for teachers, and much more. Local Church Chooses Arts Story and photos | Amanda DeBusk Fade in on the Arts Institute at Southland Community Church (SCC), located at the old West Grove Elementary School at Smith Valley Road and Mullinix Road. In the first repurposed classroom, Sarah McVey practices Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy on a polished grand piano; she is practicing for the Arts Institute’s upcoming recital. In the room next door, her younger brother, Samuel, practices his violin; he follows his teacher, Sarah Page, and tries to mimic the inflections as she plays. I sit and listen to Sarah until she completes the movement; my grandmother and I used to go to the theater every year to watch the Nutcracker, and the song always takes me back in time. The Arts Institute at Southland Community Church is a new kind of offering here locally. Many local churches including Community Church of Greenwood (the parent church from which Southland Community began) and Mount Pleasant Christian Church have spectacular athletic offerings, but SCC chose to put their focus on the arts. The McVey family mentioned above is just one of the many families who began taking lessons at the Arts Institute and who have now become members of this rapidly-growing church community. 10

Samuel McVey practices violin with his instructor Sarah Page. Southland Community Church is still young, as churches go, but it is gaining members quickly. After a brief foray at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home, SCC moved to Sugar Grove Elementary for a summer, and was then given an opportunity to move into the then recently-vacated West Grove Elementary – all of this, by the way, with a cumulative age of less than four years!

… difficult to find. So after graduation, Jenna began volunteering weekly with Southland’s Worship Pastor, Jim Dodson. Eventually Pastor Dodson asked Jenna if she would be interested in creating an arts center associated with the church! After some tweaking of her original proposal and several months of prayer from the church elders, the Arts Institute was finally a reality in October of 2011.

After two years at West Grove, the church has put in an offer to purchase the school. They are currently waiting on a reply from the school board on whether the option to purchase is going to become available. Senior Pastor Steve Schellin is very enthusiastic about this location, as all of the available classrooms are very conducive to offering artistic instruction.

Jenna says that the Arts Institute started with “a vision to be a place where artists can come and produce their art, can teach, and can be a community Jenna Page of artists who do what we do for the glory of Jesus Christ.” The Arts Institute was able to draw from its rich store of musicians already associated with the church to introduce its music program first. Currently, students are enrolled in private lessons for piano, violin, flute,

Jenna Page, the Art Institute’s director, graduated from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelors Degree in Music. As a part of her senior studies, Jenna spent her final semester creating a proposal for a Christ-based arts program. Now, as many of you who are artists may know, gainful employment in the arts is, shall we say

With the wide variety of classes offered, it is hoped that the Arts Institute will have many students. Private classes have enrolled students from elementary school age through adults. With a concentration on private instruction, Jenna hopes to “focus on that relationship building. The time that you have with students that is one on one is really quite incredible. I think that really fits with our vision of wanting to not just care about them as musicians but also to care about these kids and adults as people and really help them grow in that regard.” The youngest (and arguably most adorable) students of the Arts Institute get to visit with Heather. She teaches a class for the littlest of musicians: infants through preschoolers. Parents get to be involved in this one, too – it is a “Music Together” class. This is

Currently, art classes are being offered through Southland Community Church, although not directly affiliated with the Arts Institute. them. Pastor Schellin said, “Help you paint them? I mean, none of us are artists, or if we have any, I don’t know who they are!” And Ed said, “I’ll teach them.” So far, four of the twelve paintings are in progress: The Garden of Eden, Abraham and Isaac, Moses coming down Mt. Sinai with the 10

Commandments, and Noah and the Ark. Next month, Ed is heading to Las Vegas and the Bellagio to photograph fountains to use as elements in the image for the parting of the Red Sea. He is also covering all his own expenses for this project. The creative process for these paintings

is unique. Ed uses models and landmarks and takes several pictures, and then merges all the images together into a giant 6 x 8 foot photograph. Each photograph is cut into three levels and then into miniature strips, maybe an inch wide. Then, students are responsible to reproduce their strips in paint. The painting is done in four layers, with Ed being very engaged in the last layer to help create the detail of the painting. As knowledge of the Arts Institute grows, Steve and Jenna hope to be able to offer more classes based in the aesthetic arts as well as music, drama, and dance.

Notice how the strips of photograph in front are recreated in paint on the second layer.

It’s planting time!! Finally, we can start our Fairy, Moon, and Rainbow gardens referred to in my previous articles. Before we plant our Wonder at the Yucky and the Fairy! flowers, we need to start with good dirt and good dirt has earthworms. My great nephews, Max and Eli, look for the wiggly critters in our gardens. Earthworms are fun to watch but more important they improve our garden soil. The book, Yucky Worms: Read and Wonder, by Vivian French, illustrated by Jessica Ahlberg, tells the story of a young boy learning all about worms from his grandmother in her garden, even how their “poop” or “cast” helps fertilize plants. I can’t tell you how many funny stories the boys can tell involving poop!

My great nieces, Lindsey and Lauren, will have fun making a fairy garden. The book, Fairy Gardening: Creating Your Own Magical Miniature Garden, by Julie Bawden-Davis and Beverly Turner will get you hooked on a fairy garden hobby that is so popular right now! The authors point out one of the key features of

fairy gardens is that they should tell a story. This will give me a way to tell Max, Eli, Lindsey, and Lauren about their Grandma Alice (1951-1999). Their Grandma Alice and their Nana were once young girls with a special pet duck, Sally, and Sally can tell a story because everyone knows that animals talk in fairy gardens. I have found a way to involve the boys in that project by having them help make twig furniture for their cousins, the twins. Pinterest is full of ideas for things to make for fairy gardens, but I recommend this link to create a simple fairy garden in a container. I’ll use a variation of this with the twins: bit.ly/atCG_FairyGarden. In, July we will be visiting a local bonsai grower. We’ll be sure to get more miniature garden ideas. cg The Gardening Nana, Nancy Craig Nancy loves flower gardening almost as much as she does her great nephews and nieces. Her interest in gardening intensified while living in Holland and was perfected with Master Gardener courses.

Brooke Magdzinski | Kate Rhoten Moms are busy people by nature. However, sometimes life throws moms a curve ball. How a mom handles that can really be a testament to the strengths women can bring to motherhood. Center Grove Mom of the Year had many wonderful candidates. The title can only be given to one mom, and it was the public that decided the winner. Without further ado, the inaugural winner of the Center Grove Mom of the Year is Brooke Magdzinski. Chris, her husband, nominated her as well as her friend, Nicole Zapp. Chris sent an email to friends to let them know what he had nominated his wife, and Nicole responded by stating that she had already nominated Brooke as well. It was quite a surprise for Brooke, and she was happy to share more of her and her family’s story with us. In 2011, Chris and Brooke were like any other Center Grove family. They were busy working and raising their young family. Chris is a teacher and coach at Center Grove High; Brooke owns Dottie Couture Boutique in Greenwood. They have two children, Taylor and Max (now 3-1/2 and 20 months, respectively).

In early 2012, Brooke discovered a bump in her daughter’s stomach. They met with doctors and had it removed. It was a two-pound tumor. Just two days later, they found out it was stage 3 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerous tumor of the muscles that are attached to the bones. It is the most common soft tissue tumor in children. The journey through their daughter’s cancer treatment started with that diagnosis in February, 2012. Last year was tough. Brooke said, “Taylor has finished a year of treatment. Forty-six rounds of chemotherapy, 25 rounds of radiation, multiple infusions, transfusions, and a few surgeries.” Isolation is how Brooke described the last year. The family couldn’t participate in the normal activities that other families were doing. Germs were to be avoided; the neighborhood pool not swam in. The family had to be isolated from each other at times as well. Brooke would stay with Taylor in the oncology unit, and Max would have extended stays with Brooke’s mother. Chris would be there for all of them at different times. “It was constantly about Taylor’s care,” Brooke mentioned.

Being a business owner gave her the flexibility to be with her kids when they were healthy and even more so when little Taylor became ill. Brooke said her two great managers allowed her to be home with the kids before and especially during this last year of fighting for Taylor’s life. Rather than let negative creep in, Brooke focused on the positive. She reminded herself that God would not give her more than she could handle. Faith kept her going. Some days were tougher than others. At times, taking it in day by day seemed too daunting, so she would say to herself, “Just make through this hour.” Then she would focus on the next hour. One time, Taylor asked her mom why she was sad and Brooke explained, “When you hurt, I also hurt.” Brooke believes that by being honest with Taylor, it gave Taylor the strength to be brave through all the chemo, radiation, and operations. Brooke learned that she had four little eyes watching her and they would follow her lead. If she was upset, they were upset; if she was happy, they were happy. Another way for Brooke to focus on the positive during the last year was to help others. She found a way through what is called “Shop for a Cause.” This allows people to

buy items and designate the proceeds to help those in need. Help can be for local families or for disasters like the Haiti earthquake. “I believe in helping others through their difficult times,” and she did just that during her daughter’s cancer treatment. Even one of her business vendors got involved. They donated headbands for the girls in the oncology unit at the hospital. “Activities like that kept me from playing the ‘poor me’ card and falling into that rut of self pity.” Now out of isolation, “Life is about freedom, healing. Really, there has not been a day that has gone by after chemo ended that I just don’t feel so thankful for every single day, especially every single day with her [Taylor].” It means everything to spend time with family and friends. Having a sick child and a healthy child is hard. Brooke said that Max would ask why Taylor was laying there not playing. It was hard for him to understand. Now she knows having two healthy toddlers is also hard because they are both active. Taylor isn’t completely out of the woods yet. She will have scans done every three months for the next three years. That will be followed by scans every six months for two years. At the five-year mark, if nothing has changed from where

Taylor is today, she will be in remission. All the little things that they couldn’t do as a family last year are the most cherished moments they are currently experiencing. Brooke especially enjoys this time while they are still little and sweet. Reading stories to Taylor and Max, tucking them into bed, and talking about their day are what fuels Brooke. She loves seeing them together and how they were sitting in the back seat of the car holding hands. This summer, they will get to go to the pool together like other families and enjoy walks around the neighborhood. “It will be about just having fun, anything, walking around, I’ll be happy. Doesn’t take much anymore for me to have a good day,” Brooke stated. Taylor was granted a Make-a-Wish trip to Disney this summer where new family memories will be made. Brooke created a blog to chronicle Taylor’s journey through her diagnosis and treatment. She states that she has a tendency to forget things she would rather not remember but the blog will tell the story later to Taylor. Taylor will get to read about how amazing she is and that she fought hard against cancer. If you would like to read more about their journey, the blog address is OneMamasJourneyThroughCancer.blogspot.com.

However, she doesn’t let that stop her from being there for her boys for everything from baseball practice to homework to just playing around the house. She also runs her husband’s business, and volunteers in her boys’ classrooms whenever possible. Ambrosia is truly an inspiration to mothers everywhere.

Amanda Sparks Amanda exemplifies Proverbs 31:25-31. She assured our son had an enjoyable childhood and learned to be a kind-hearted, respectful individual who strives to live a Christ-like life. Tony Alderson: From Broom to Boom | Joyce Long After graduating from Center Grove High School in 1984, Tony Alderson found himself second guessing his next step. With a scholarship to Herron Art Institute in hand, Tony quickly decided right-brain creativity wasn’t his forte. Soon he transferred to IUPUI to pursue architecture. As life goes, that goal took a detour. Marriage and fatherhood prompted him to get a job selling appliances, later waterbeds, and finally lumber. Then in 1989, Tony’s father, Dave, hired him for $7.50 an hour to write purchase orders for his employer, a local commercial development company. With the building boom of the late 1980s, Tony soon found himself leaving his “broom technician” role to become a site superintendent. He soon graduated to management roles, including projector manager. Eventually, Tony served as the commercial group president for six years. When that relationship ended, Tony’s passion for construction, real estate, and arranging business deals culminated in the start-up of Alderson Commercial Group. Not only was it a risk, its inception started as the building boom was bottoming out in late 2007. “I didn’t receive any pay for a year and a half. But it was a real blessing that my cousin, Brent Tilson, had enough faith in me to partner with me and my brand new company.” Their first project, called the Signature Building, houses Tilson HR and MedTech College as well as the Alderson Commercial Group. Other properties owned by Alderson include County Line Medical Pavilion and the soon-to-be-completed Stones Crossing Health Pavilion located just south of Marsh on State Road 135. Not only does Tony enjoy construction, but he also enjoys building companies. Currently, he is investing in other businesses such as an in-home health service, assisted by his sister, Lisa, a 1983 CGHS graduate. His 25-year-old daughter, Cassie, will soon lead Alderson Residential Group, whose boutique office will be located near Fountain Square at I-65 and Virginia Avenue. “I’m trying to teach my kids the power of working on their own.” Another of Tony’s passions is team building. Business

development necessitates teamwork. Previous companies he worked for modeled hierarchy rather than the team concept. “I like to lead from the back. A good owner of a company supports his staff and grows them. We empower, challenge, and reward our team.” Each year, Alderson Commercial Group employees receive raises. Company growth from one-half million dollars in 2007 to $20 million in 2012 supports this philosophy. “When you’ve been blessed, you’ve got to bless back twice. It keeps everything in balance.” Business partner Chris Hoffee is also Tony’s neighbor at the recently-developed Abaco Estates off Banta Road in Johnson County. Named after his favorite island in the Caribbean, Abaco Estates still has a few three- to five-acre parcels for sale. Moving back to the Center Grove area was somewhat bittersweet. Before the Stones Crossing Health Pavilion was started, Tony’s father, Dave, passed away. What began with a broom has come full circle in establishing both a solid work ethic and a legacy. cg Joyce Long, Greenwood Middle School language arts teacher from 1992-2000, has called Center Grove home for the past 25 years. Currently Joyce works as the communications coordinator for Center for Global Impact and is passionate about engaging people to empower the poor.

A Hoosier Vacation: Yes, there is more than corn in Indiana! | Ann Craig-Cinnamon Indiana is not known nationally as a vacation state, but there are many things to see and do here, whether you are looking for family fun or just a nice adult getaway. Let’s start with summer outdoor fun:

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

• Holiday World and Splashin' Safari in southwest Indiana has been picked as one of the best theme parks in the country by numerous organizations over the past few years. The Raven was voted the #1 wooden rollercoaster in America several years in a row. • In Monticello in Northern Indiana, Indiana Beach with its amusement park and man-made beach is popular. Indiana has a wealth of great parks:

Brown County State Park 22

center grove c o m m u n i t y

CenterGrove_May_2013.indd 22

• Brown County State Park near Nashville is renowned for its fall colors, campground and its hiking and horseback riding trail, not to mention covered bridges • The Hoosier National Forest in the hills of south central Indiana is extensive and is known for its great hunting, fishing and camping • Turkey Run State Park in Parke County in West Central Indiana has sandstone gorges that were carved out by glaciers hundreds of millions of years ago that you can hike and camp in • Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell in south central Indiana is a beautiful park with a lovely inn, caves to explore, and a pioneer village. It was also the home of astronaut Gus Grissom and there is a memorial to him there. newsletter

• Indiana Dunes State park is in Chesterton in Northern Indiana and is right along the shore of Lake Michigan. There’s hiking and camping and, of course, Lake Michigan • Mounds State Park near Anderson is known for its historic series of mounds built by a prehistoric Indian tribe dating back to 160 B.C. There’s great history, hiking and camping too. • Pokagon State Park near Angola in northeast Indiana has an inn that is open year round and is especially popular in the winter with its toboggan run and cross country ski trails Other places that are worth a weekend trip include: • Amish Acres in Nappanee in north central Indiana features an actual Amish community and nearby Shipshewana, a quaint town with lots of great shopping • Nashville in south central Indiana is known as a tourist spot and art colony with lots of great shopping and beautiful colors in the fall • French Lick is about 100 miles southwest of Indianapolis and has two beautifully restored historic hotels, a casino, and several golf courses including the world-class Pete Dye Course All this and we didn’t even discuss Indianapolis with its Children’s Museum, NCAA Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, Speedway museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Indianapolis Zoo to name just a few sites. We tend to take it for granted, but Indiana does have a lot to offer on all fronts and is worth spending some time exploring this year. cg

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Websites Are Marketing Tools

| Jody Veldkamp ou may think that every business has a website, but a 2012 U.S. Census Bureau study says only 25% do. Maybe it is the numbers of truly bad websites that make it appear there is more than that. Scott Hopper of Mouse Wiggling Media says websites are marketing tools; bad ones hurt your business. “Small to mid-size businesses that are ready to move into the next phase of growth need their marketing materials, including their websites, to reflect that they are growing.”

Y

Scott’s father was a self-declared computer nerd. Scott learned programming in elementary school, but the interest waned. He joined the Navy, served our country, saw the world, left the Navy, and then moved into retail sales and marketing. His Naval leadership skills served him well. He advanced quickly up the ranks and then moved into the business-to-business and education marketing. In 2009, he decided to set out on a new career path. His sales and marketing experience fit well with computer skills in the website development arena. His belief that a website is marketing, not just technology, brings a fresh approach to website development.

Handyman Services of Indianapolis is a good example of affordable problem solving. The owner’s brother-in-law created a website that was “amateur at best.” The owner lost the brother-in-law and control of his website in a divorce. Mouse Wiggling Media was able to regain control of the domain and create a new website that accurately reflects Handyman’s quality work. The new site showcases their work, allows and encourages new clients to easily request a free estimate, and helps customers stay up to date with special offers and promotions. The site utilizes cutting-edge technology called “responsive layout,” allowing it to look great on small devices like smartphones, medium devices like tablets, or large monitors on desktops and laptops.

The White River Rotary Club funds the scholarships for Center Grove High School. Since 1988, Greenwood Rotarians have been raising money through club meetings, donations, and an annual golf outing to provide these scholarships for area students. Each student receives $1,000/year for four years.

oNLY $45/HouR

“The program started with a 50/50 drawing each week at the local Rotary meeting,” said Jim Oxley, one of the Rotarians who helped get the program off the ground. “The initial amount was $250/year for four years. Then one year there were three very well-qualified applicants, so they divided the money three ways, netting each student $83/year. That’s when we decided we had to do more,” Jim said, and the golf outing was added.

Since that small Dye’s Walk Golf Pro Andrew Craft at the start in 1988, many 2012 outing changes have occurred. Lilly Endowment, Inc. provided matching grants that turned $25,000 of club money into $50,000. The Johnson County Community Foundation manages that money. The White River Rotary Club was organized and became the second club in the Greenwood and Center Grove communities. Both clubs now organize and support the May golf outing. Last year, a little over $14,000 was raised. That amount was split between the two clubs. All proceeds go to the scholarship fund, and all money is spent and/or committed to student scholarships.

Making ¢ents Oh, the Cost of Convenience

| Kate Rhoten Growing up, I remember hearing the saying, “You can’t get something for nothing.” This was my mother’s way of reminding me that life is full of give and take. You can’t expect to get what you want without working for it or paying some sort of cost to receive whatever it is that you desire. Recently, our kids wanted to stop by Gene’s Root Beer stand on our way back home from visiting my mother-in-law. While we were waiting in our car for the carhop to take our order, I was reviewing the menu.

cycle. By establishing a minimum, it allows the business to determine what price point is best for the business to accept the card. On the flip side of a minimum purchase, a discount for cash is starting to make a comeback. Recently, I was making a purchase at a consignment shop. As I laid my purchase on the counter to check out, they asked if I wanted to pay cash and receive a discount. I happened to have cash and my debit card. I chose to pay cash; and by doing so, I reduced the buyer’s remorse that usually sneaks in when I buy myself clothes. I suffered no buyer’s regret with this purchase. A third option is the surcharge for paying with a debit or credit card. The businesses that typically charge this fee

That’s when I saw in small print, “$8 minimum for credit card purchases.” This wasn’t a big deal since we usually spend that much, or I have fun money for situations such as this. As Visa and MasterCard became more common on debit cards, businesses have had to evolve with their payment offerings. Not all business or government entities are designed to receive their payments via these instruments, and it got me to thinking: What are all the ways that businesses try to control their expenses as it relates to the use of debit or credit cards? One option is what is what Gene’s does. By establishing a minimum purchase for product, the business is able to lessen the cost of running the bank card. Paying with a Visa or MasterCard costs the business money. You may not think about it, but they actually have to pay for the convenience of the customer to buy their goods or services with this payment method. The amount the business pays is determined by the amount that is processed over a billing

are not retail chains. They add the surcharge to the amount the customer owes on their bill. I researched some of the businesses that serve our area and discovered the following add a surcharge: the county treasurer for your property tax bill, the water company, gas company, sanitation services, energy company, associations with annual fees, and many others. Some call this a convenience fee; and it may be a flat fee regardless of the amount of the bill, or it may be a percentage. Property tax bills paid online are added 2.95% of the amount owed when paid using a debit or credit card. If you overlook a bill in your budget and need to pay last minute or want to pay something that renews automatically on an annual basis, plan for the fee. The business prefers payments made in other forms; but for your “convenience,” the company will take your bank card as payment. Just don’t let those fees throw the budget out of whack. You’ve been warned; you don’t get something for nothing, just like my mom said. cg Kate is a financial expert of what to do and not do with money as well as owner of 4 Walls Financial, A Coaching-Focused Company. LEMONADE DAY | Jami Marsh, Director, Lemonade Day Greater Indianapolis “Get a cool glass of lemonade here!” will be echoed by thousands of lemonade stand owners in Center Grove and other communities across the Greater Indianapolis area on Saturday, May 18, Lemonade Day. These “budding entrepreneurs” are participating in a free, national initiative called Lemonade Day that teaches kids of all ages how to start, own, and operate their own business: a lemonade stand. Last year, 15,000 kids throughout the ninecounty region participated; and the goal this year is to engage a whopping 20,000 kids. The big “reach-for-the-sky” goal is to inspire the next generation of Hoosier entrepreneurs. Houston entrepreneur Michael Holthouse, who is also a native Hoosier, founded Lemonade Day in 2007 after helping his daughter set up a lemonade stand so she could earn money to buy a pet turtle. Holthouse realized through this experience that the process of setting up a stand and selling lemonade provided valuable lessons in entrepreneurship, and an idea was born. By 2009, Holthouse had expanded the program to other cities and approached Carmel inventor and entrepreneur Scott Jones about bringing the program to the Indianapolis area. Jones had many businesses as a kid, including lemonade stands; and because he understood the transformative power of this experience, he immediately signed on. And the community has responded. Indianapolis is one of the top three cities around the country in terms of the number of kids participating in Lemonade Day. The program works like this: kids sign up to participate at their local library, YMCA, or through another youth-serving organization like the Girl Scouts. Upon signing up, kids receive a bright yellow backpack that contains two workbooks: an “Entrepreneur’s Workbook” for the child and a “Mentor Guide” for the adult who will help the child prepare for Lemonade Day. The kids work through 14 entrepreneurship lessons in the workbook and ultimately “open up shop” and sell lemonade on Lemonade Day, May 18.

Serial entrepreneur Scott Jones helps some neighborhood kids get their stand in order. The best way to truly understand the impact of this program is to hear from the kids and families who participate. “We are so thrilled with our Lemonade Day experiences,” said Stephanie, the mother of one of our veteran participants. “Our son is 6-1/2, and this year was his 2nd Lemonade Day. This year, he opened his first savings account. He deposited 10% of his proceeds from his lemonade stand to open the account. We have made two additional deposits since then, and each time he brings his deposit slips home and proudly pins them on his bulletin board to remind him of his hard work. Both years, he has taken a portion of the proceeds from his sales and given them to his school library to purchase books for the library collection. He is thrilled when the books arrive at school and he is the first person to check out the books. They are a very tangible symbol of his hard work and philanthropy.” Everyone has a role to play on Lemonade Day. You are either a lemonade stand owner selling lemonade or a customer buying lemonade [smile]. Support these budding entrepreneurs on May 18, and help inspire the next generation of Hoosier entrepreneurs! cg

WORD SEARCH: Words from the Gettysburg Address Presenter | Chambers Agency . Creater | Lucy Stravers

Last month’s puzzle confounded many. It seemed unsolvable. It was unsolvable. Between submission and printing, a line was deleted, our apologies for the confusion. If you would like to try the puzzle again, please visit the puzzle page on our web site where you can find a correct copy, with the solution key. This month we focus on words from President Lincoln’s Gettysburg address on November 19, 1863. This puzzle can be tricky, because a number of words are repeated, e.g. “that” and “that this.” Words in the list below are in the puzzle and may appear in any direction in a straight line. O
