By Tom Britt Tom@atGeist.com My, how things have changed in the last month. Just as Geist residents in Marion County were celebrating the end of duck hunting on the reservoir, a press conference on November 17th at the Fishers Town Hall put the Hamilton County residents on their own offensive.

As most of you have heard, the Fishers Town Council, led by Scott Faultless, announced their plans to annex over 2,050 homes on and around Geist Reservoir into the Town of Fishers. Property taxes would increase approximately 14% for the affected homeowners which results in a $600 per year increase for every $250,000 of value in their homes. Within a few days, a website was created at SayNOtoFishers.com as a platform to relay information about the issues, allow residents to voice their opinions, and communicate important dates and meetings for all homeowners.

Less than two weeks later on a snowy Tuesday night before Thanksgiving, over 160 concerned homeowners attended an organizational meeting at Fall Creek Elementary.

Following the meeting, over 25 residents offered to volunteer to serve on the board of directors which held a meeting one week later at Indian Lakes Country Club. At the end of this closed-door meeting, a nine-member board of directors emerged with two ex-military residents leading the charge:

Opposition to the annexation plans to have a public meeting in mid January. This break in the action gives both sides an opportunity to research the financial plans and spend time with family.

The next evening, the Town of Fishers hosted a “One Night, One Town” meeting on December 1st to introduce Geist residents to the services and leaders of Fishers. Over 300 residents attended and voiced their concerns about the tax increase. Town officials were asked the million dollar question throughout the night, “what is in this for me?” Most walked away feeling like the Town of Fishers was trying to sell residents a horse they already own since they have already paid for or privately contract these services.

“Mavrick,” which is what they call him on the show.

His TV series has gained popularity as it’s been on the air. It debuted on UPN 23, a local channel, and then 2.2 million other households were able to see it when WHNB 40 picked it up.

Another 20 million could view the show when a DIRECTV station signed on, station 321. Also it will debut on the Sportsmen’s Channel in 2006.

One of the episodes features the introduction of “Mavrick-cam,” a true birds-eye view of the hunting experience. Episodes also feature fishing trips, watching Brochin land a 200 pound Mako shark using catfish tackle, or a feature on the capture and training of his hawk.

“There’s nothing like blowing a whistle and your bird comes flying out of the treetops because he’s ready to hunt,” Brochin said.

With the growing audience and popularity of his outdoors show, Brochin recently returned home from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas where he filmed a pilot for another show series called the “Ultimate Outdoorsman.” On this show he persuades a group of people to go out in the wilderness where days in Texas can get as hot as 115 degrees and they have to hunt to survive. The people get points for various demonstrations of survival skills and hunting kills. The show, which is now in the process of marketing, is described by Brochin as “the biggest project I’ve ever attempted.”

In order to keep his pet hawk in his home, he had to train with Master Falconer Greg Thomas of Noblesville. When given permission, Brochin had to build housing facilities and secure the necessary husbandry equipment.

When that was finished, all of it had to be inspected by licensing authorities before he could even take state and federal tests required to trap and keep a bird.

“I really pride myself in their care,” he said. “I want to be able to entertain and also educate people about the reality of hunting and fishing, about the importance of the predator-prey relationship necessary for ecological balanceboth with myself as a hunter, as well as birds of prey.”

Brochin only uses a bow when he hunts and the challenge is what keeps him interested. Hunting with a bow increases the chance of a miss, which adds to the satisfaction when he gets a kill.

When I visited with Eddie Brochin, luckily enough his hawk was with him. He told me that they had been hunting earlier in the day and their truck got stuck in a cornfield. Everyone that came to help them out got stuck as well, so he had to walk to TKO with the hawk to give a Taekwondo class. He was leaving the next day for Mexico so his truck was going to have to stay in the cornfield for 4 or 5 days.

Kitchen Remodeling Tips

By Debbie Bracken Perhaps you live in a Geist area home built over a decade ago and would love to update your kitchen. In addition to enhancing the look and enjoyment of your home, most experts agree that a kitchen renovation project can return 100% on investment when the property is sold. Surveys by the real estate industry show that a kitchen is one of the most important features of the home for both residents and prospective buyers. The quality of the kitchen often makes or breaks the sale.

For some kitchens, all that is needed are new knobs/pulls on the cabinetry to provide an inexpensive, updated look.

While others could benefit from cabinetry in a different color, or perhaps new counter-

cabinetry, countertops, and flooring it is easy to become overwhelmed by the number of available choices. A kitchen designer will discuss the family’s lifestyle, desires and priorities to assist in the selection of products and finishes as well as create a detailed floor plan drawn to scale with elevations. Mud Creek Players: Not Your Typical Barn said Dottie.

By Lauren Fitzpatrick Lauren@atGeist.com If you’ve never seen a show at the Mud Creek Players’ barn, what are you waiting for? Like so many other Geist residents, I had driven past the barn, located at 86th and Mud Creek, on many occasions, always thinking, “I should go see a show there.” So, on a Thursday night in December, I finally entered the barn for the first time. Walking into the barn is like - well, walking into a barn. The atmosphere is rustic and cozy, and it seems that everyone knows everyone. If you don’t know anyone there, that will soon change.

At the refreshment window, I met Dottie Pierdos, a woman who has been involved with the Mud Creek Players for 45 years, and has become a verita-

Dottie and her late husband ‘came in’ in the fall of 1961, and she has been here ever since. “I was here when the barn burned down in 1963 and when we built the new barn,”

Dottie has been designing costumes since before there was even a stage at the barn, back when the shows were performed in a corner of the room.

She also bakes the famous cookies for the kitchen, acts as the resident historian and even was responsible for cutting the grass at one point. “Once you’re in, you can kind of jump into whatever you’re interested in,” said Dottie. She introduced me to many other members, all who have been involved with different aspects of the Mud Creek Players.

“You don’t have to be an actor to be involved with Mud Creek,” said member Kathy Meyer. “It’s great for people who just like to be around theater, as well as those who like to act.” Continued on page 10

Safety Officials Warn of Ice Danger

By Sgt. Gerry Hepp The Fishers fire & police departments warn that neighborhood ponds are beginning to freeze over, and are urging area residents to help prevent drowning this winter.

As ice forms on ponds in area neighborhoods, children, pets and even adults may be tempted to wander out onto the ice and explore. The results of this curiosity can be tragic.

“Young children and pets just don’t know any better, so they need constant and close supervision around ponds, not just in the winter but year-round,” warned Ron Lipps, Public Information Officer for the Fishers Fire Department.

“Older kids and adults SHOULD know better, but often don’t appreciate the danger.”

Continued from page 8. The Mud Creek Players provide opportunities for adults and kids alike with an annual summer program called Barn RATS (Really Awesome Theater School). RATS is geared towards kids aged 6-12, and covers everything from script writing to performing.

“Kids do a performance every Friday,” said Kathy, “and they very often write their own scripts.”

The constant freeze-thaw cycle in central Indiana doesn’t promote the formation of good, solid ice on ponds and other bodies of water. In addition, ponds and lakes have their own warm spots and undercurrents that create thinner areas of ice that are not easily detectable from above.

A person who falls through the ice can quickly succumb to the numbing cold water and won’t be able to get back out of the water and onto the ice without assistance.

I sat down with Kathy and her fellow members Carla Crandall and Liz Chandler to watch the holiday production of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ The show was hilarious, about a women’s theater group and their struggles to put on a traditional production of the Dickens classic. Everyone enjoyed themselves, from the audience members to the

actors on stage. Before the night was over, some unsuspecting audience members even found themselves involved in the production!

The Mud Creek Players are unique in the fact that a membership is required in order to participate in productions. “It definitely means that our members get a chance to be on stage,” said Kathy. “The nice thing is also that if things happen in your life and you can’t be active, that’s OK. You can drop out and then come back in when you are able to.”

Thanksgiving “Black-Out” Prompts IPL to Send Out Gift Certificates

By Tom Britt Tom@atGeist.com Like many of you, our power went out on Thanksgiving Day, right in the middle of the busiest day our oven has seen in months. Dinner was served about an hour late after the power came back on after an hour outage. Power went out again around 7:00 pm for about 30-40 minutes, forcing our family to have desert under candlelight. At first I thought the outage was limited to my neighborhood or maybe a few neighborhoods at most. When my daughter went down to Marsh on Fox Road to get some last minute supplies, the doors were locked and their power was out, too. That’s when I realized that this was a much broader problem.

that the power outage was due to the power grid not being up to par for the growing northeast side of Indianapolis. Stephen Avery of the Admirals just moved back to the area from South Carolina with his wife Mary Ann. “We are not happy to see power failures in this neighborhood since we had over $35,000 in damage done to our former home by South Carolina Electric and Gas,” Avery said. Power surges and outages were a result of the exponential growth in his former hometown and the local power company’s inability to keep up with the infrastructure upgrades.

Kim and Marissa Manlove Continue Their Mission With Blog

By Lauren Fitzpatrick Lauren@atGeist.com As I pulled up to the Manloves’ Echo Pointe house, I was a little bit nervous. Here I was, about to talk to a couple who lost their teenage son, David, to substance abuse. I have never before discussed the death of a loved one with strangers. Suddenly, a hawk coasted overhead, and I instantly relaxed. By reading Kim Manlove’s web blog, I had learned that their symbol for David was the hawk. It turned out that I had nothing at all to worry about. Kim and Marissa Manlove were open, honest and extremely easy to talk to.

Though they have undoubtedly shared their heartbreaking story countless times, they continue to do so, and it continues to resonate with all who hear it.

We first introduced the Manloves back in April, when they shared David’s story with atGeist.com.

Four and a half years ago, David

was a sophomore at Lawrence Central when his life was cut short after using an inhalant.

Since then, his family has only strengthened their efforts to educate others about substance abuse. “We’ve come to believe pretty strongly that this is a gift that David has given us the opportunity to share,” says Marissa. “He gave us the strength to share his story, and through the sharing of his story and our story, it might make a difference in somebody else’s life. For us, that’s a powerful reason to keep doing it.”

One recent development has been Kim’s new web blog, posted on The Partnership for a Drug-Free America’s website. “I don’t think that I anticipated how cathartic it could be. At first it was kind of hard for me,” admits Kim. “I had to set the time aside to do it.

Now it just comes. One of the things we talked about early in our grief, after David died, was

that we get blind-sided by things that happen to us, that take us right back to those early days.”

“Those things could be sights, sounds, smells, any number of things. Those have continued, but they have become less frequent over time. In some ways, now when those things happen, I try to turn them into blogs.

That’s why it has been very cathartic for me. It gives me a way to take those thoughts and those memories and, in some ways, kind of give them wings that help me with my own hope and my own joy.”

Kim and Marissa are very much a team, both agreeing that they are stronger together. They recognize that grief can be a destructive emotion and work to combat its negative potential. “We all experience grief and loss in different ways,” explained Kim. “To avoid getting upset at each other for not feeling it in the same way or expressing it in the same way, we make sure to discuss how we are feeling and why. Grief is a very individual thing.”

Constantly being asked to resurrect such painful memories could be draining, but the Manloves continue to use their experience as a way to help others. “We’ve made a decision not to shy away from telling our story, because we felt like we could put a real face on this issue,” said Marissa.

birthday, the Manloves bring a batch of cookies to three different locations: Fairbanks Hospital, David’s treatment center; the fire station that dispatched David’s EMTs; and the ER where David was taken. Through this tradition, the Manloves continue to express their gratitude to the people who helped David in his last moments.

“We have also started a new holiday tradition of sorts,” says Marissa. “Kim named a star in David’s name to mark the first birthday after his death.

I have gotten all new ornaments for our tree, and each one incorporates a star.” The family also continues a tradition that started when David and his older brother, Josh, were young. “Every Christmas Eve, the last thing we did before going to bed was to read The Polar Express,” said Marissa. “We still make it a point to do that every year.”

One of the amazing things about the Manloves is their dedication to using their personal tragedy as a way to help others. “Our focus is on education and prevention,” said Kim. He and Marissa are currently involved with The Partnership for a Drug-Free America and the Drug Enforcement Agency to increase awareness of substance abuse among teens. Plans are underway to hold a national candlelight vigil on June 8th, 2006, in memory of all of those who have lost their lives to substance abuse. “We wanted to help come up with a signature event that could then be replicated on the same night all across the country,” said Kim.

Whooping Cough is on the Rise - Vaccine Now Available to Protect Your Pre-teens and Teens, 11 to 18 Years of Age

By Dr. Elizabeth Beach Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. Right now, adolescents are most at risk of being infected.

Children in the United States ages two months to five years are immunized against pertussis in the diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine series. However, immunity against pertussis wanes five to ten years after the last early childhood vaccination. Until now, an adolescent and adult booster has not been available.

This situation has made adolescents and adults much more susceptible to being infected with pertussis.

Later, when they do see their physician, the antibiotic treatment then fails to have much impact on the severity or duration of the symptoms.

The symptoms in adolescents begin as a mild cough for a few days. In more than two-thirds of all cases, that cough will progress to classic pertussis, involving severe, paroxysmal coughing fits ending in a “whoop” when the infected individual tries to catch his breath (hence the name “whooping cough”). These coughing fits often lead to sleep disturbances, even vomit ing, and can last anywhere from three to four weeks to

Update on Fall Creek Sidewalk Extension In October, the GHPOA Board approved the extension of the sidewalk at the southernmost end of Masthead on Fall Creek Parkway to connect the walking trail on the dam.

Connection to the walking trail will not start until next spring when the final sections are finished by the Indianapolis Water Company.

My Personal Journal from an Alaskan Cruise ByKristin Thomas Kristin@atGeist.com In mid-August, my boyfriend Jay and I went on a cruise throughout southeast Alaska. I had so much fun that I wanted to share my trip with all of you.

I kept a journal throughout the whole week that I was there and I felt the best way to share my trip with everyone would be to share the actual journal.

We learned many things on our trip. For example, the winters in Alaska are actually milder than our winters here. The temperature stays in the upper 30s to lower 40s all winter. They get snow, but it usually doesn’t last long because it will snow and then get warm enough to rain so the rain will wash all of the snow away. As for everything else we learned, read the journal . . .

Wednesday August 10th, 2005- TRAVELLING DAY

Today was traveling day. Had to get up at 4:00 a.m. to head to the airport by 6. Got there and still had 2 hours to spare.

Finally got on the plane to Chicago. Flight only took 45 minutes and we were at

O’Hare. Shortly after rushing through the airport to get to our next gate we were on our flight to Vancouver. That flight took about 4 hours. From the airport we took a bus tour through Vancouver to the pier to get on

It was so foggy that you could barely see the land...and it was cold! Must have been in the 40’s. But it felt good. During breakfast we managed to see our first whale.

First tip for the cruise...whenever you see a group of people yelling and pointing ecstatically at something in the water... you probably want to get there quickly so that you can see something cool!

it was too foggy to even see the land which was probably 100 yards in front of us.

Because of this, they delayed getting into the tenders (the smaller, emergency boats) to go to shore for at least 3 hours until the fog cleared up enough to see land. So we had breakfast and hung out. The food on the ship is delicious.

Anyway, we finally got to shore in Ketchikan and Jay and I looked around at some of the shops. Wasn’t much there except a bunch of jewelry stores and a really neat place that sells things that change colors in the sun. We could hear a lumberjack show going on. Chainsaws and a bunch of people yelling…reminded me of hearing one of those cheesy Halloween haunted houses.

After coming back to the boat we had lunch and then relaxed until sunset when we went whale watching. It was so

windy I could barely stand up...and cold! I’m glad I packed my winter coat!

Juneau is tomorrow!

Saturday August 13th, 2005JUNEAU Slept in this morning and we were already docked in Juneau by the time we got out of the room. Had breakfast and then went ashore and walked around the city. At 2:00 we had our shore excursion. We got on a bus and went on a tour of the city and Mendenhall Glacier.

Learned a lot of cool/interesting/funny things about the city.

For example...Outside of the city hall building in Juneau, there is a statue of some pelicans diving into water. Well it turns out that some place in Florida was building their city hall at the same time and they ordered a statue of some diving pelicans, while Juneau ordered a statue of a nice, big bald eagle. Somewhere along the

Florida liked the eagle so much that they refused to give it back so now Juneau is stuck with the pelicans. The tour guide assured us that we would not be seeing any pelicans in Alaska.

The people here are so friendly! Jay was lining up to take a picture of me when a complete stranger came up and told him to get in the picture with me and he took a picture of both of us. This happened not once but twice today. Not to mention all the random people that just start talking to us. It is a very welcoming city. Saw quite a few bald eagles today and luckily no bears. Well, actually I would like to see a bear, but from far away please!

Sunday August 14th, 2005SKAGWAY Today we were in Skagway.

We decided at the last minute to book a shore excursion for today, so we signed up for a White Pass and Yukon Railroad excursion, but first we went out on the town to look around.

The town was about a half-mile up the road, so there were shuttles or you could walk. Jay and I saw a couple bikes with carriages on the back of them so we rode in this carriage up into town. The guy pedaling the bike was really nice, and he

told us some things about the town and asked us where we are from and if we are doing any shore excursions. Got into town and went in a couple shops. It’s really a neat little town because all of the sidewalks were wood. Found out that Skagway only has a population of about 600 people who live there permanently and another few hundred that live there only in the summer. Very small town!

Later we went on our shore excursion. We got on a train and went way up in the mountains and to the Canadian border. Learned a lot of things about the history of the railroad and the people who built it.

Most interesting history lesson I’ve ever had. 3500 men worked for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days building the railroad and only 2 men died.

They died because a huge boulder fell on them. The boulder was too big to move so they just left the bodies under there and placed a black cross on top of the boulder. The bodies are still under the boulder to this day.

We will resume printing highlights from the Classifieds in the January 2006 issue of the “atGeist Community Newsletter”.

Stan Eisenhooth: I want to know how becoming part of the town of Fishers is going to improve our neighborhood. Can anybody explain why this is a good idea?

Margaret Millar: Although I am not included in the 46256 zip for Fishers annexation, I am close enough to be appalled that my Geist neighbors would just sit back and let this happen without some conversation. The information I see on the news and in the Star indicate this IS going to go through with no opposition at all. Since when does a town have the right to make a neighborhood their domain? Someone needs to lead the fight to conduct further research before just allowing this to happen.

Tim Wade: There will be a fight over this annexation.

Maybe Fishers is not all that they think they are. Who died and put them in charge of our tax bills. It sounds like the newspaper is in their pockets but anyway you spin this Fishers is just trying to build its tax rolls. We pay enough taxes already. We need to get our Homeowners Associations working together to fight this. I am busy but not so busy I am going to sit back and let these guys get in my pocket for another 2 grand a year.

a home on Geist right now and can’t believe that Fishers wants me to call it home. One reason for my site selection was that it was in a township. Taxes in a city far exceed those in a township and the benefits are none.

So whatever has to be signed, I will sign and I hope all of you who live in the area do the same. We need to far exceed the 65% rate and show them we don’t want them. This is a clear tax grab and nothing else.

Tom and Sandy Kling: Just tell us what to do and we will do it! Fishers is using scare tactics. Also Realtor Dick Richwine seems to support this Fishers move, according to his quoted remarks in the paper, and that is very worrisome.

Joe Sobek: We keep hearing about the $600.00 tax for the first year, what’s going to happen to taxes after that year is up, they are not telling us the rest of the story once they get their hands on us. Say “No”, its the only way.

Steve Griesemer: Dear Carrie U, Thank you for a great opportunity to set the record straight.

A quick reference to the Fisher’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for 2004 (available online) indicates that NONE of the taxes paid to Fishers goes to pay for HSE. That’s right, 0%. Why? Because each school district has its own taxing unit, within which ALL residents pay the same percentage. Your message implies that Fishers funds HSE out of its own pocket, which is not true. Property taxes are collected by Hamilton County and disbursed by its Auditor. As Fishers notes its Annual Report, Geist homes are “some of the most expensive homes in Indiana,” so while we may pay the same percentage as Fishers residents within the same school district, in actual dollars we seem to be paying more than our share.

Sheila Fuzy: I just received my certified letter today. I live in Canal Place and I saw the carrier delivering to other houses as well. When I asked her if this was regarding the Annexation, she said yes and that I should hold onto the envelope as it is dated incorrectly. The town of Fishers did not pay enough for postage so they were delayed. I 26
