See it, Hear it, Believe it! Technology Interiors recently relocated its showroom to 8977 East 116th Street in Fishers, where customers can learn firsthand about its various video, audio and automation options and services. Customers will also be able to check out the company’s brand-new video wall, a first of its kind in the U.S., at the new showroom. “This showroom will have five movie theaters, a video wall, a grand piano and so much more than most people have ever imagined in an electronic store boutique,” says owner Rick Goren. Since 1998, Technology Interiors has served Central Indiana with home theater audio and video installations and is currently the state’s No. 1 seller of home theater screens and projectors, according to Goren. The company’s new showroom will also be home to the first JBL Synthesis in the Midwest — a 22-channel, 180-inch screen theater. “The new laser projectors will blow your mind when you see how spectacular the image is, and the new paradigm Personna, the pinnacle of the audio-video industry, will be prominently displayed in our showroom too,” Goren adds. Technology Interiors will also highlight the newest and latest technologies for video conferencing and huddle rooms. The camera system is a state-ofthe-art 4K analytic and forensic tracking camera system. “It’s a high level of learning every day to keep up with thousands of brands, as technology exponentiates,” Goren says. “We have to stay educated, and we do that through attending trade shows multiple times a year in San Diego and Orlando.” As for Technology Interiors’ new showroom, Goren says you’ll have to see it to believe it. “I really let the designer go wild with the showroom, and the creativity flows throughout the new facility from the moment you walk in,” Goren says.

THE LAST STOP HSE DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION JIM WHITE RETIRES RIGHT ON TIME

Planes, trains and automobiles. According to Jim White, who has been the Director of Transportation for Hamilton Southeastern Schools for the past 14.5 years, the logistics for each mode of transportation is the same. A former Air Force pilot, White says that when it comes to getting from one place to the next, safety is paramount, followed by schedule.

“In the Air Force, I had to make sure I took off on time and landed on time,” White says. “This job is time sensitive as well. I gave up airplanes and pilots for school busses and drivers.” White graduated from Purdue and immediately joined the Air Force, where he flew for 20 years before teaching aviation technology at Purdue. Then in 2003, he landed the job of Director of Transportation at HSE, where he had oversight for the purchase of busses, the garage and the atFishers.com / JANUARY 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7

routing of 16,000 students. During his tenure, he’s witnessed the area’s steady growth. When he first started, the school system had 130 busses. Now, they have 300, and they transport 22,000 kids daily. “We encounter glitches every day because there are so many moving parts — no pun intended,” White says. “It’s a mind game every morning trying to figure out how to make one thing work without impacting something else.”

Arriving at the office at 5:30 a.m., White starts taking calls from drivers who are sick or can’t make it to work. If the weather is poor (fog, snow, ice), he arrives closer to 4:30 a.m. so he can consult with the superintendent and directors from adjacent communities like Carmel and Westfield. Decisions regarding delays or cancellations must be made by 5:30 a.m. “We can’t wait any longer because if we do, parents start making plans and it causes a wrinkle in their day,” White says. But altering the daily routine adds an extra set of challenges as well. “A two-hour delay, for instance, requires planning for the special needs children who go from school to a work environment,” says White, who through the years has seen changes to the transportation system — most notably, the advancement in technology. Now they have routing software that’s more user-friendly. “We still do hands-on routing, but it draws all the information from the student database, so that we can see where students are and where we need to route the busses,” says White, noting that they also have high-definition cameras on busses, which has resulted in handling fewer discipline problems. In addition, GPS on the busses allows White and his team to see exactly where a bus is and what time it stopped and picked up a student. “This is nice because if we get a call from a parent who claims that one of our drivers went right by and didn’t stop to pick up their child, we can see if that’s really the case,” White says. Though he describes the job as being allconsuming, he’s loved every minute of it. Especially the funny conversations he’s had with students. “Elementary kids are brutally honest and will tell you exactly what they’re thinking,” says White, recalling the time he subbed for

unenthusiastically, ‘Oh, it’s you again.’ Cracked me up.”

“Are you a good driver?” the boy asked.

White is newly retired as of January 1 and still adjusting to the transition.

White nodded. “How long have you been driving?” the student inquired. “Since before you were born,” White replied. The following day a different substitute was driving, and the boy asked, “Where’s the man?” “I thought he missed me, but the next time I subbed, he looked at me and uttered 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2018 / atFishers.com

“When I gave up my phone to my replacement, Zach McKinney, it felt weird,” White says. “It’s been on my hip 24/7 for the past 14 years.” But White is happy to turn over the reins so that he can travel with his wife, Ann. “On my bucket list is to drive my Corvette down Route 66 just for kicks,” White says. “I’d also like to drive Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall.”

Building Hope CHRISTMAS IN ACTION OFFERS FREE HOME REPAIRS TO LOW-INCOME, ELDERLY AND DISABLED HOMEOWNERS

Writer / Jon Shoulders

repairs become necessary.

The Christmas spirit extends well past December in Hamilton County.

“There are stories that just make your heart cry because you see people who have been through some terrible things, and you realize they’re doing the best they can, and you’re compelled to help them out,” says Karl Lundberg, board president of CIA Hamilton County. “The volunteers certainly feel like they’ve made a difference because the homeowner is truly grateful to have help with things they just can’t afford.”

Each May on the weekend before the Indy 500, a nonprofit organization known as Christmas in Action (CIA) gathers a group of dedicated volunteers in Hamilton County and spends a Saturday making free repairs to the home of an elderly, low-income or disabled homeowner. Such individuals are typically on fixed incomes and struggle to pay for food, utilities and medication prescriptions, often leaving Back in 2001, New York native Lundberg nothing left over to cover costs when home relocated to Fishers and started a local

chapter of CIA, a faith-based nonprofit founded in 1972 by a church Sunday school teacher in Midland, Texas. Lundberg had launched a chapter in Olean, New York, prior to relocating to Indiana, and found the experience to be rewarding for everyone involved. “I had heard about it at a conference in New York, and it reminded me of my grandmother who was on a fixed income and didn’t have much money,” Lundberg says. “Basically, we have a blitz day with our volunteers where we come in and do repairs that are free to the homeowner. People can apply for help through our web site, and

we’ll visit them to look things over and then have them sign a waiver form and show us what needs to get done.”

below) also features a volunteer application form and a link for direct online donations, which are tax deductible.

Typical projects can include interior and exterior painting, window and flooring replacement and roof leak repairs. Volunteers are not required to have prior construction or home renovation experience.

In addition to individual volunteers, CIA receives assistance and support from Habitat for Humanity, SERVE Noblesville and several northside churches and businesses, in the form of supplies and money as well as food for volunteers.

“We typically take on projects that we can start and finish in one day,” Lundberg says. “So, if we see a house that needs a bulldozer or something extensive, that’s really beyond what our scope is. If you need your house painted, then we get 15 people or so together to paint in one day — that’s what our scope tends to be.”

“While the repairs are appreciated, I think sometimes knowing that there are people who care really has a meaningful, emotional impact on the homeowner as well,” Lundberg says. “I’ve seen people break down in tears because they were at the end of their rope, and then when people come in and rescue them it’s a big deal to them.”

Those in need of assistance can fill out a two-page application on the official CIA website, including contact information, monthly income and descriptions of requested repairs. The website (see URL

MARLIN JACKSON’S FIGHT FOR LIFE FOUNDATION IS MAKING A STRONG IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF YOUTH

Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Marlin Jackson grew up in the projects in Sharon, Pennsylvania to a mom who had addiction issues. Jackson did not grow up with a nurturing parent. He did not have positive social or emotional role models. He was not presented with a solid example of how to love himself or other people, but he persevered.

with law enforcement. Your foundation is so important to the fabric of who you become, seeds are planted, with a different environment, that goes with you.”

At the University of Michigan, Jackson was an All-American as a freshman and as a sophomore. Jackson was postured to enter the NFL after his junior year. His football career came into jeopardy when he had been engaged in an altercation. Jackson was not the instigator of the situation, but had “As a youth, I had a lot of grace,” Jackson been arrested nonetheless. Michigan Coach says. “I could have followed down the wrong Lloyd Carr told him that if he was found path but was able to escape altercation guilty, he would be off the team. For the first INDY METRO / JANUARY 2018 / TownePost.com

time, Jackson realized that this could all be gone. The feeling was devastating. The guy who had started the altercation later sued Jackson after graduation, Jackson countersued and won. He didn’t collect any money from the lawsuit, he simply wanted his name cleared. While Jackson was at the University of Michigan, his psychology class volunteered in inner city Detroit schools. As Jackson listened to the stories of the students. He could relate, for he had lived their life. When Jackson shared that he had the same

experiences, the kids didn’t believe him. “You’re lying, you’re Marlin Jackson, All-American,” said one of the students. Jackson had opened their eyes to possibilities and these kids had opened his. The kids could dare to dream, and so could Jackson. It was in this inner-city school that Jackson knew he would start a program to help kids like these, kids like him. The Fight for Life Foundation is the program that Jackson needed when he was young. When Jackson was drafted by the Colts, he listened to Coach Tony Dungy speak of faith, family and football, Jackson was surprised. It was the first time he heard a coach mention faith and family sequentially before football. “The positivity that Dungy and Bill Polian spoke of was something that I’d never heard before,” Jackson says. “They emphasized our role as a man in the community, our faith and our relationship with God. I was hungry for something that I didn’t know that I was starving for.” In his second year in the NFL, Jackson created The Fight for Life Foundation. As his football career was winding down due to injuries a few years later, he poured his passion into Fight for Life. Jackson made a commitment to himself and God and moved forward on his social entrepreneurial path.

Life. “It provides kids with a common language to express core concepts of accountability, integrity, self -worth and honesty. It also emphasizes the concept of volunteerism and being good citizens in their family, school and community. For many of these kids, these are concepts that they are not being exposed to at home.” Implementation happens in the classroom with a comprehensive curriculum that is age appropriate. The programming may be implemented from Pre-K to 8th grade and is currently in six schools. A plan is in place to roll it statewide in the next year, with the ultimate goal of nationwide impact. The first pilot for the program was adopted by Jackson’s alma mater,Musser Elementary. Early adopters in Indianapolis include Pike Township, Phalen Leadership Academy and IPS. “Fight for Life provides teachers with a program that allows students to feel seen, heard and valued every day,” Mitchell says. “In today’s society, we must create treatment programs for the opioid surge, but more importantly: prevention,” adds State Senator Jim Merritt. “Marlin’s Fight for Life program is exactly what we are in need of because prevention is a much-needed part of the solution. With prevention programs like Fight for Life, we all benefit.” For each $1 dollar spent on Social Emotional Learning programs, the return is $11 in total economic benefit to society. The real benefits in the lives of the children are immeasurable. For more information, visit: fightforlifefoundation.org. INDY METRO / JANUARY 2018 / TownePost.com

And if you own the food system… Well now, don’t get me started. Now, I am from a ‘Big Ag’ family, and I appreciate the great need to feed the world. wonderful. And in the home garden, where our small batches of food are grown, the organic path is easy to accomplish. Besides, who wants a GMO seed with Salmon DNA in your homegrown tomatoes? Yuck! This is an excellent month to search seed catalogs and find the type of plants you would like to begin indoors in the month of February. In Indianapolis, we are in Zone 5b. Hoosiers begin ‘sowing’ (placing seeds under the soil) seeds indoors around February 15. You can begin with your ‘cold crops’ like Kale, Spinach, Kohlrabi, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cabbage and more. These veggies are called cold crops because, you guessed it, they love the cold. Cool, fun fact, did you know Pansy flowers are in the Spinach family and are also edible? They are a cold crop too and you may begin sowing Pansy seeds really early. Organization is the key to excellent seed germination and success. Keep a journal and a garden calendar. Note when you started and when you see the first leaves emerge. The back of your seed envelope will have all the instruction you need, so keep them for further seasonal instructions. Keep your seed packets in an airtight container. I love a product called the Seed Keeper Deluxe. If you need help, ask your local garden center for instruction. Gardeners in general love to teach, and I love sharing these tips with you all to help you learn how to, “Grow a More Beautiful Life!” Happy planting!

Imagine this. It’s a Saturday evening in Fishers. You are visiting the city’s community arts center to attend a musical theater performance. Fellow theatergoers stroll across the plaza before the show. You pause to take a photo in front of one of the colorful sculptures outside. As you enter the arts center, you greet some people you know. They are season ticket holders, like you, who attend a performance here regularly. You present your ticket and enter the black box theater before the show begins. This type of community arts experience may be in Fishers’ future sooner than you think. Recently, a class of third-year Ball State University architecture students designed a Fishers arts center. Their class project was initiated and directed by the Fishers Arts Council, a local organization that brings arts opportunities to the community. and visions for seven different designs for Fishers’ future community arts center. Imagining a Fishers Arts Center grounded in a real-life community need. Ball State is dedicated to immersive learning and a Fishers arts center project was an exciting opportunity for both the students and the community.” “This has been my favorite project during my three years of studying architecture at Ball State,” says student Cassi Quissel. “I am from Plymouth, in northern Indiana. This assignment gave me chance to get to know Fishers for the first time and contribute to the real future of this community.” Each student-group offered a unique approach to a Fishers arts center. The students presented seven different concepts at an open show to the community last month. The event was held at Meyer-Najem Construction, a Fishers business with art gallery space. models. Local arts advocates, musicians, performers and artists attended the event as well as city government representatives including Mayor Scott Fadness, Deputy Mayor Leah McGrath, city employees and City Council members, David George, Todd Zimmerman and Cecilia Coble. “This is an amazing opportunity and partnership between Fishers Arts Council and Ball State University,” Coble said during the event. “Each of the students’ designs demonstrated innovation created specifically for Fishers. We need more art collaborations like this.” Geno Leser, a Fishers resident and a performer with Fishers Music Works’ Mudsock Jazz Combo, attended the exhibit to see what students imagined for a space where he could perform some day. Leser thinks about what it will take to make the arts center dream become a reality. “I see a three-legged stool approach to bring a facility like this to life,” Leser says. “Three equal parts need to work together. Local for-profit businesses, non-profit organizations and the community all need to collaborate to make an arts center a reality.” Although Leser dreams of a future arts gathering place in Fishers, he acknowledges that a creative scene thrives here already. “This arts facility will enhance the heart of arts that already exists in Fishers today,” Leser says.

Because timing matters. Nobody schedules a sprain or a twist. So the Central Indiana Orthopedics Walk-In Clinic in Fishers is ready and waiting. Walk or hobble in the next time you feel something pop, crack or tingle. Our highly skilled doctors, nurses and staff develop personalized treatment options and find the best course of action to get you feeling like yourself again. World-class orthopedic care is right here, in Fishers.

The Ball State students seem to share this heart for Fishers arts as they demonstrated their ideas to the crowd of attendees. Visitors at the event interacted with the students and asked questions about the future architects’ inspiration and ideas for a Fishers community arts center. There is no question about the level of interest in developing a community arts center in Fishers. The event was packed with intrigued residents. “People obviously like this idea” Musall says. “Together, we will keep imagining Fishers’ creative future.”

“YOU’RE AT A CROSSROAD AND IT COULD BE WORSE FROM HERE” That’s what I thought as I looked down at the scale and saw 198 pounds glaring back at me. If I wait for my husband to approve or to start a weight loss program together, where will that leave me? I needed help immediately, and that’s when I discovered Fit Chicks! I needed a program to call my own, where I could get in shape without feeling embarrassed, inconvenienced or confused. My trainers worked me out every session, every time. Plus, I got a lot of help with meal planning and my diet. Then something else happened that surprised me. I was happier. I wasn’t as fussy or worried all the time. Today, I’m 47 pounds lighter and love my body. J.R -Member Testimonial

Fit Chicks!’ concept is unique in that it provides a comfortable, convenient and all-inclusive 3-dimensional program for women: 1. Fitness – personal training, interval cardio 2. Nutrition – clean eating, meal planning 3. Well-being – accountability, tracking and fun “Fit Chicks is amazing! I really appreciate the personal connection I immediately made with my trainers,” says Teresa Smith. “If I miss a session or need to take time off, one of them always touches base to ensure I get back on track. The workouts are challenging but realistic for me, so I always walk away feeling good about myself. My blood pressure is down and I’m slimmer since I joined Fit Chicks, for sure.” Get in shape, without feeling embarrassed or confused ever again.

Nickel Plate Bar & Grill remains a local favorite more than 20 years later

Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Jamie Sangar

With the booming development of Fishers in recent decades, one locally-owned restaurant has stuck to a simple, locally driven formula. “We are Fishers — we are the local people here,” says Bob Pollock, co-owner of Nickel Plate Bar & Grill. “With all the new things coming in, I think all of those new people are looking for what we have to offer too.” Located in “old town Fishers” next to the former Nickel Plate Railroad tracks, Nickel Plate Bar & Grill features a casual, pub-like atmosphere with a full-service bar, private dining area, family area and an all-season patio. Initially home to the Parks Place Saloon, the original exposed-brick building was constructed in the 1880s and has housed many local watering holes over the years. “From what I know about the building, it’s always been a bar/restaurant, except

for during prohibition when it was ‘an ice cream parlor,’” Pollock says with a chuckle. “I wasn’t around for that, so I don’t know how much ice cream they sold in Fishers back then.”

already, so it was a great fit.”

An Indiana native, Pollock was first introduced to the restaurant industry decades ago. “I got a part-time job as a bouncer at a place called the Bulldog Lounge in Broad Ripple,” he says. “I started working there part-time, and somehow a year later, I was the general manager. I’ve been in the business ever since.”

“We have many key people who have been here a long time,” he says. “Managers, bartenders, servers and our chef, who have been at the Nickel Plate 15 to 20 years or more. It's been a great team effort. As a manager, I am really proud of our group.”

Having now been a co-owner since 1994, Pollock is thankful for the reliable team he’s had by his side for all these years.

The Nickel Plate Way

It was through the restaurant business that he eventually crossed paths with Nickel Plate Like one might assume, there’s a certain Bar & Grill founders Rick and Beth Lux, who charm that comes with being located in a invited him to come on as a partner. historic building. Having a staff that’s locally based helps too. “I had already been a manager of a restaurant in Indianapolis,” says Pollock, “I think it makes for a very comfortable feel who moved to Fishers with his wife in in the building — it’s got a local feel to it,” ‘93. “Rick and Beth, the original owners, Pollock says. “We are locally-owned, and knew me and were looking for help here everyone that works here is pretty much in Fishers. It just so happened I lived here from Fishers or northern Indianapolis.” atFishers.com / JANUARY 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 27

Although the restaurant keeps things simple, the menu at Nickel Plate Bar & Grill has evolved over the years to follow trends in the business. “We look for new things coming in that people are asking for, and we try to incorporate them into our menu,” Pollock says. Overall, though, they’ve made sure to stick to what they’re good at. “There are some basic items on our menu that have always been the same, and those are really our top sellers,” Pollock says. “No. 1 is the breaded tenderloin. We’ve won a lot of awards over the years for our tenderloin. It is probably about 30-40 percent of our sales. We’re also known for our fish and chips and our burgers.” As for their drink selection, the Nickel Plate Bar & Grill has also adjusted to the growth of craft beer as well. “We’re kind of limited in the amount of taps we have, so it’s not a whole lot in that regard,” Pollock says. “But in our bottle selection, we have a lot of craft beers involved now.” At the end of the day, Pollock ultimately attributes the Nickel Plate Bar & Grill’s success to a simple formula. “We serve really good food at a really good price in a really nice place,” he says. “It’s nothing fancy. We’ve never tried to be fancy. But it’s always been a local favorite.” In reflecting on the longstanding success of the bar and grill, he couldn’t be more thrilled that the people keep coming back. “It means a lot,” he says. “We’re very proud of what we’ve done here at the Nickel Plate and how we’ve been able to stay a popular spot in town all these years.” 28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2018 / atFishers.com
