TIJUANA FLATS HAS BEEN A FISHERS FAVORITE FOR NEARLY 15 YEARS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ron Wise
The taco fans of Fishers make it fun for John Rowe to go to work every day. Rowe, owner of Tijuana Flats, 7834 E. 96th Street, Fishers, says he is continuously overwhelmed with positive feedback from his neighbors. “The Fishers Community has always welcomed us with open arms,” Rowe says. “It is really exciting when regulars bring a friend for the first time. I love how proud they are to show off ‘their’ restaurant.” The popular restaurant has been a big hit for the past 13 years.
“Tijuana Flats opened on May 2, 2005,” Rowe says. “I bought my partners out on Feb. 1, 2007.” Rowe has been busy ever since. He noted that the tacos are by far the most popular item on the menu. “We have the biggest tacos around,” Rowe says. “On Tuesdays, we sell two tacos, chips and a drink for only $5.99. We also have a ‘Fan Faves’ Board, which features all the best selling items the guests are eating up the most. The Street Tacos and the Steak and Cheesy Tacos are by far the best sellers.” Other great menu options include 6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas, tostadas and more. Rowe has his own personal favorite. “I love our Blackened Chicken Flautas,” Rowe says. “Coming in a close second are the Ground Beef Nachos with all the toppings.” Over the years, Rowe has also developed a special taste for the restaurant industry. “I have always loved the restaurant business,” Rowe says.” I decided about two years into college that if I was going to school for Hotel and Restaurant Management, why not just jump in and get started?”
Rowe started his restaurant as a delivery driver in 1992 for Krusty’s Pizza in Phoenix City, Alabama. “I learned the business from the bottom up,” Rowe says. “In that time span (since 1992), I have managed for Dominoes Pizza and later Noble Roman’s Pizza. Then I went to Papa John’s, before owning Tijuana Flats.” He loves it when his restaurant is crowded. “I soon realized that I loved the rush of people, and the challenge of serving all the guests as they choose to spend their hardearned money in my restaurant,” Rowe says. “I wanted to treat them like they were a guest in my home. We never had excuses (in my home or restaurant). We just did the best we could.” It’s a work ethic that has paid off handsomely for Rowe in a place he is thrilled to be in. “What I love about Fishers is the people,” Rowe says. “Fishers is a growing city with a small-town feel. This is a place where your kids can grow up to be whatever they want. It’s a great place to raise a family, and grab a couple of tacos.” Rowe’s family includes his wife, Shannon, daughter, McKenna Rose, and his work family. “Of course, I have my awesome crew, who are truly my family, and the other reason I get out of bed every morning,” Rowe says.
Owners, Shannon & John Row
“FISHERS IS A GROWING CITY WITH A SMALLTOWN FEEL. THIS IS A PLACE WHERE YOUR KIDS CAN GROW UP TO BE WHATEVER THEY WANT.” - JOHN ROWE
Rowe added that Tijuana Flats is based out of Orlando, Florida and has been a highly successful franchise. “We have the honor to be the only franchise location outside the state of Florida,” Rowe says. “We have grown the business so much over all these years that in 2019 we will be opening another Tijuana Flats in Hamilton County at an undetermined location. I believe that the rest of the county needs a taste of what the awesome people of Fishers have known for years.” Tijuana Flats is located at 7834 E. 96th Street in Fishers. Owner, Esta Denny
LOCAL MOM GRANTS PET OWNERS’ WISHES THROUGH A PURRFECT PET SERVICE Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photography Provided
One woman in the greater Indianapolis area has earned the reputation as being the “Furry Godmother,” and she is changing the quality of life for pet owners. Esta Denny could be described both as a Cinderella for her work ethic and as a godmother for her ability to make everything better for pet owners. Over the past nine years, she has established the premier professional pet service into a trusted role as a “The Godmother” to both pets and their owners. As it turns out, Denny’s path to becoming the owner of Furry Godmother started at a young age. Denny’s entire childhood offered more
proof that she would one day own her own business. In the first grade, Denny achieved the top level of selling Girl Scout Cookies. She had a lemonade stand that produced $300-$500 in profits to pay for a family trip to Kings Island. She was also one of the first bloggers as she watched soap operas and wrote about it and sold them door to door. Her competitive spirit led her to earn 10 varsity letters for athletics in high school, too. It was clear that Denny’s work ethic would one day lead her to own her own business. For 15 years she worked as a server and bartender and enjoyed helping others. One day a friend called and asked her to walk her dog, she jumped in and she began to refer her to other friends that needed help. This became her side job alongside working as a bartender. 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
As if the universe was trying to nudge her in the right direction, a dog bit her in the wrist making it impossible to work as a bartender. So, while she was doing physical therapy to recover from her injury, she took on more four-legged clients. She completed her physical therapy and eventually returned to work as a bartender but never stopped caring for the dogs. After two years of doing this work on the side, she was able to quit being a bartender and focus her attention full-time to growing her pet business. Denny, a single mother, officially opened her doors for business in 2010 and worked solo for four years. The Furry Godmother offers pet services, dog walking, cat care and pet sitting in and around the Indianapolis area. Her business continued to grow
steadily to the point where the single mother was logging 250 miles a day driving to her clients' homes working as she shared “from sun up to sun down.” In 2014, she began bringing in employees she felt would have the same meticulous attention to detail. The business continued growing through word of mouth and her business recently achieved their 300,000th visit with more than nine years of 5-star reviews. Working with Denny is a magical click away. The business was established as a mobile service. To start the process, dog and cat owners need to fill out an online profile which, upon acceptance, the Furry Godmother team will help each client determine what the best service for their pet is. They will forward a link to help each pet owner complete the registration process. There is an online scheduling feature to help you find the service that suits your pet needs, too. Each visit is documented through a feature Denny calls “The Daily Adventure” which confirms to the client that their pet was seen that day, what happened and what service was provided. In addition, Denny provides a photo of the pet during the visit as a way to ease the pets’ parents. “Sometimes emergency situations arise and those requests can be handled over the phone,” Denny says. Denny also donates gift baskets with toys and treats and offers services from her business to many charities throughout the city. She has created fun social events for a variety of communities through fun social pet events like “Doggy Pool”, “Yappy Hours”, “Mutts n’ Mimosas” and more. Denny credits her employees for helping her achieve her success. “My team is everything to me,” she says. “I love to cheer people on, and I am deeply grateful for all that they do because I could not do it without them.”

Fishers Couple Closes In On 40 Years As HSE Bus Drivers Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Ron Wise
“I’ve always loved the idea of being a bus driver ever since I was a child,” she says. “My dad was a bus driver for a city bus line. He drove a route from Sheridan to Westfield to Downtown Indy. He was dressed up every day in uniform, and I always thought it was cool.”
There’s a Fishers couple who’ve been keeping the wheels on the bus going, and there’s a good chance your kids know who they are. Meet Stan and Betty Clark. Betty has been driving for 40 years now, and Stan for about 35. Together, they work hard Betty drove the route as a contractor to keep kids safe on their journeys to and for five years, then was hired on with from school. Hamilton Southeastern Schools as a fulltime driver in 1983. Stan continued his Stan’s family owned a farm in Fishers, and in farming duties, and when the family sold the 1970s, farmers often were bus drivers and the farm, he began driving in 1987. The owned their own buses. Stan’s uncle owned a pair soon realized it wasn’t just a fun way bus, and he drove a route to supplement the to supplement their income, the insurance family income. When he needed a substitute and benefits, like PERF (public employee driver, he called upon Betty to fill in. She was benefit fund) began to pay off. only too happy to fill in. 12 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atFishers.com
A lot has changed through the years since Stan and Betty began driving. They’ve seen the city of Fishers transform, and they’ve seen the job and the kids transform. Betty recalls how the Fishers landscape grew before their eyes. “In the beginning, Cumberland road was a very narrow, two-lane road,” she says. “You barely had room to pass the car going the opposite direction. At 126th Street and Olio Road, right by the high school, there was a pole in the way. We used to have to swing our buses wide to avoid it. Now Olio is a major thoroughfare.” The developing landscape and expanding population directly impacted Stan’s and Betty’s jobs.
“When we started, there was just one high school, one junior high and three elementary schools,” Betty says. “We started with 18 routes and grew to over 300 routes.” New technology has provided added tools to enhance the job, like GPS tracking and the ability to notify parents of a late bus arrival or other changes. “Before the new school year began, we used to sit as a group, take our paper and pencil and choose our routes and draw them out. We worked it out between ourselves,” she says. “Now, the computer does all the routes automatically.”
At the end of the day, no matter what the changes are, our main goal will stay the same... Our job is to get the kids to and from school safely. BETTY CLARK
The change that’s perhaps the most near and dear to Stan and Betty’s hearts is the change in the faces of the kids. “We’ve been driving so long, we’re on our second generation of kids,” Betty says. “Some of the parents we see were the kids we used to drive, and now we’re driving their kids. Several parents ask us if we remember them. They all touch our hearts. When we see these kids on their very first day of school, it brings a tear to our eyes just as it does mom and dad. It’s amazing to see them change. We take care of all of them like they’re our own.” As much as Stan and Betty love their jobs, there are challenges just like with any job. Any Fishers residents with kids are more than a little familiar with the redistricting initiative that resulted in some kids changing schools and bus routes. The changes had Stan and Betty hopping to keep the routes and times balanced. But they took it in stride and kept rolling with the changes. “At the end of the day, no matter what the changes are, our main goal will stay the same,” Betty says. “Our job is to get the kids to and from school safely.” After 40 years of driving the bus for Hamilton Southeastern Schools, the Clarks aren’t ready to slow down just yet. Betty says they’re considering 2020 as a tentative goal for retirement. But in the

meantime, she’s got some words of advice to pass along to the next generation of prospective drivers. “It’s really hard for the schools to recruit good bus drivers and keep them because the job isn’t eight hours a day,” she says. “But it’s a great job for a mom not just for the benefits, but because you can take your kids with you and you’re finished when your kids are out of school. It’s not just a job, it’s a profession. Many people don’t realize that to become a licensed bus driver requires training and passing a test for their commercial driver’s license. That means we’re held to a higher standard for driving skills, staying in good health and taking care of the kids.” Congratulations to the Clarks for keeping Hamilton Southeastern School children safe and their buses rolling along for nearly 40 years. The school district, the children and their parents are fortunate to have such special bus drivers at the wheel.

“Our biggest priority is to help children,” says Bill Smith, Charter Member of Greater Fishers Kiwanis. “We needed to make this happen.” The charter members of the new chapter who came from the old one began the task by calling local businesses and corporations to ask for their help in encouraging their employees to join the new chapter. So, just over a year after its closing, the club was resurrected and reorganized. Already, the chapter is up to 30 members, but they would like to reach 40 to 45 members by the fall or winter. “We have to get the word out,” Smith says. “We need people who can dedicate their time and effort to help, not just to help your resume, but out of your passion to help children. There’s lots Kiwanis does that people don’t even know about. We will always be focused on making things better for children in the community.”
Kiwanis International has raised $100M dollars for UNICEF for their efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders. They’re currently working to raise money to eliminate childhood tetanus worldwide. Along with their own projects, Kiwanis has joined in service projects with countless other organizations that support children’s interests including the US Army, Nickelodeon Network, Boy Scouts of America, the March of Dimes, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Children’s Miracle Network and countless others.

is out there,” Gatz says. “With January being National Mentoring Month, we’re trying to really showcase what we do here in Fishers. We want to remind people that everyone can help and give an hour a week to a Fishers student.” YMI officials will be posting stories and testimonials from mentors and mentees on the official website throughout January, highlighting past successes of the program and underscoring the importance of community mentoring. Fishers Fire Chief Steve Orusa, who serves on the YMI board of directors and currently mentors an eighth-grader and a high school sophomore, says mentoring for as little as one hour a week can have a long-term impact on a young person. “It’s a great opportunity to make a difference,” he says. “And the longer you do it the better you get. Once you can build trust with a kid, that kid is going to empower you to coach them into making good choices as they go out into the world.”

Gatz says one of YMI’s ongoing challenges is convincing local business owners to give their employees an hour of paid time for volunteer mentoring since mentor sessions occur during the school day. “We feel like what we do fits in with today’s trend of businesses wanting their employees to give back, as well as Mayor Fadness’s recent focus on mental health,” she says. “Hopefully, as we get the word out more and more, businesses will embrace the idea of making time for kids in Fishers.” YMI also hosts an annual fundraiser each August to generate money for mentor training and assistance to Hamilton Southeastern schools throughout the academic year. The event is typically open to the public, and individuals can visit the organization’s website for additional event details or to donate directly. “I personally feel like every one of our kids is at risk in some way,” Gatz adds. “YMI was conceived as an extension of the guidance departments in schools, for kids who are at
risk of not graduating or having disciplinary problems. But today, kids have so many things coming at them, as far as who they should be and how they should act, and it’s almost like we have to counterbalance all of those messages. It takes a village, and everyone can give an hour to help.” Orusa says making a difference in a young person’s life can be a reward in and of itself for volunteers. “Helping to transform a young person’s life is huge,” he says. “There are always moments in life that touch our hearts and bring a tear to our eye, and we put those slides in our life’s slide tray. With this, being just a one-hour-a-week investment, you can have a lifetime of slides in your slide tray of your heart being touched when you deal with these kids.” For more info on Youth Mentoring Initiative, call 317-558-9641 or visit them online at ymionline.org.

FISHERS CALLS ON COMMUNITY FOR NICKEL PLATE TRAIL IDEAS Writer / Kelsey Musick Photographer / Brian Brosmer
While the concept of the Nickel Plate Trail was announced back in February 2017, its construction is finally set to begin this spring. The trail will start at 96th street and stretch up to Noblesville Square, according to Fishers’ City Councilman John Weingardt, co-chairman of the trail’s Master Planning Committee.
section, which will comprise of the downtown area, according to Weingardt. Weingardt also mentioned that the City of Indianapolis is even considering extending the trail further south in the future. “My role is to give people a voice and allow them to express themselves as to what they want the trail to be,” Weingardt says. “I think this should be an opportunity people can openly discuss.”
“Mayor Fadness asked me to put together a group of stakeholders from the community,” Weingardt says. “And so far, it’s been a pretty interesting experience. We’ve had amazing input from the community, but there are a few who don’t want the trail built – they want the railroad tracks to remain.”
Weingardt, who is a business owner with his own Certified Public Accountant (CPA) firm, said that his employees are excited to be able to finally enjoy this trail. And they’re not the only ones. Several schools near where the trail will be have classrooms working on Nickel Plate Trail projects with their students as part of its idea phase.
According to Weingardt, the overall response to the creation of the trail has been overwhelmingly positive though, and most of those who have voiced their complaints and concerns about it being built aren’t even from the Fishers community.
“There is a particular elementary school that’s along the trail, where the students and teachers are wanting to give their personal touch to the trail,” Weingardt says. “Even down toward the trail’s 106th street section, where eventually a humane society will be located, we’ll add things for it as well.”
The first order of business surrounding the trail’s construction will be its middle

with residents and visitors once it’s built – and that’s exactly what Weingardt and the rest of the trail’s Master Planning Committee are hoping for. “It’s not ‘hey, here’s your trail, see you later,’” he says. “We want people from all over Indiana and the Midwest to be attracted to it, and we want them to come and enjoy it.” For more information, visit nickelplatetrail.com/faqs.

FISHERS MOMS GROUP PROVIDES FORUM FOR LOCAL MOMS TO SHARE ADVICE & CREATE FRIENDSHIPS Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Kerch Creative
All moms of children of all ages can use an ally, even if they don’t realize it. That’s what Fishers Moms Group, a Facebook forum for Fishers Moms, is all about. Founder Melissa Haller set up the Facebook group discussion forum almost five years ago to provide a place where Fishers moms could come to for support when they need advice or recommendations on a variety of topics. Amy Nobbe took over as the group’s administrator for Melissa in 2017 when she moved out of state.
“The Facebook group has been a really safe place to come and share feelings or seek advice,” Nobbe says. “We only have two rules for the group. We ask that everyone be nice and respectful towards each other and their opinions, and no soliciting.” Eighty percent of the discussion posts are moms looking for recommendations or asking for advice on not only parenting topics but tips on running the household, improving their marriage, sharing medical experiences, recommendations for restaurants, pediatricians or date night activities. But the Fishers Moms Group has provided a forum for new residents too.
“We get a lot of questions from people about schools in the area and neighborhoods because there are always new families moving into the area or are in the process of it,” Nobbe says. “The group provides valuable information to those families. Getting advice about the area from current residents has helped them make their transition more smoothly.” But the forum quickly grew into a place where people could make connections and friendships, too. “Lots of moms really wanted a friendship that was more than just online,” Nobbe adds. “So, we started having Girls/Moms Nights Out dinners, play dates, 5K signups, winery tours and other activities. It’s great to be able to connect in person. I’ve made some really great friendships by attending some of the events.” Since it started in 2014, the group has grown to almost 3,100 members, and

Nobbe receives more than 100 new member requests each week. “It’s a great group,” she says. “These moms are in all stages of life. We have new moms all the way through grandmothers. Wherever you are in motherhood, chances are, there’s someone in the group who’s been through it.” Besides providing support and fostering friendships, Nobbe would like to see the group become involved in even more things in the Fishers community. “I’d love to try and get the group involved in more community outreach type programs like volunteer work and fundraising,” she says. “We are such a huge group and I know we could do a lot of good for the community.” To join this group of cool moms, visit the group’s Facebook page by searching “Fishers Moms Group” and click “join.” As soon as your membership is approved, you’ll be able to see all the posts, advice and the latest happenings and events with the group.

Geist-Fishers Aktion Club Launches Local Kiwanis Leaders Seek to Empower Citizens With Disabilities, Promote Inclusion Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Glenda White
National service organization Kiwanis Club has announced the forming of one if its sponsored clubs. The Geist-Fishers Aktion Club just launched in October bringing a whole new level of involvement in the community. Aktion Club is a Kiwanis Program for adults with disabilities and has thousands of members worldwide in more than 500 locations. Aktion Club is the newest of Kiwanis sponsored club and joins several other Kiwanis sponsored clubs like Key Club for the high school level and Circle K for collegians. The program brings community service into focus by teaching and encouraging adults with disabilities to become actively involved in community service projects. Talks to form the Geist-Fishers Aktion Club had been ongoing for months. Local Kiwanis leaders and members used other
Aktion Clubs like the Noblesville Aktion Club, which is a very active club, as a model for the new one. To put all the pieces in place, Kiwanis leaders enlisted the help of some key people and businesses in the Geist and Fishers community who are already involved in the disabilities field, like Opportunities for Positive Growth (OPG), Outside the Box, Behavior Analysis Center for Autism (BACA) and Hamilton Southeastern Schools. Opportunities for Positive Growth, an organization which provides support to individuals with intellectual disabilities, was tapped early on for assistance and will serve as host for the meetings. Since OPG already works with individuals with disabilities, the organization was a direct fit for a partnership for the Geist-Fishers Aktion Club. OPG lent some of their talent to the venture as well. Michelle Steltz, Director of Operations for OPG, is on a Fishers advisory committee on disability and played a big role not only in making the launch happen but in forming the partnership with OPG. Once the pieces were in place, Steltz handed the reins to her

colleague, Dana Pottschmidt, a Behavior Support Specialist for Opportunities for Positive Growth. Pottschmidt was an easy pick to take on the lead role as Kiwanis Advisor to the club. She has a strong background in working with people with disabilities. With two autistic family members, she has a personal interest in the welfare of individuals with behavioral disabilities. Professionally, she has been a direct support caregiver to individuals with disabilities prior to joining OPG. “Becoming involved with Aktion Club was a natural gravitation,” she says. “I just want to help these people see they have an important role in society and they can make a difference. These people are learning valuable skills through volunteerism and it gives them a purposeful life. The club brings to light and creates awareness that people with disabilities are employable. We want this club to make a difference in the lives of our members and promote inclusion.” The Geist-Fishers Aktion Club may be in the beginning phase, but they’ll be able to get rolling quickly, thanks to the Kiwanis Club’s already established connections for fundraising and community service projects. Dave Humes, member of the Kiwanis Club of Geist and other Kiwanis Club members provided their assistance in organizing the club. Aktion Club members will provide the same quality community service as in all other Kiwanis sponsored clubs.
“We’re hoping to grow to 25, and it would be great to get closer to the average number of 40 to 50 members,” Pottschmidt says. Members must be 18 years of age or older to join Aktion Club. Annual dues are $8, and the club meets twice a month at Opportunities for Positive Growth at 10080 East 121st Street in Fishers, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To learn more about becoming involved and joining, contact Dave Humes at davehumes@comcast.net.
“The difference for these members who live with disabilities is that they often have skills but little opportunity to develop or apply them,” Humes adds. “Now they’ll have opportunities to interact socially with other adults with disabilities while making a positive contribution to society.” In September, the club held a launch fundraiser and silent auction at the Geist Yacht Club. Proceeds went to purchase playground equipment for a local school and to help launch Aktion Club. Members will participate in community service projects throughout 2019, like visits to a nursing home, park beautification projects, fundraising projects like car washes and other community needs projects like food drives. Members will have an opportunity to participate in social and educational components like a trip to a museum or the zoo and listening to guest speakers. “It’s all in an effort to help these individuals gain independence,” Pottschmidt says. Kiwanis Club is working through their channels to help promote and recruit membership to the Geist-Fishers Aktion Club. The club already recruited the minimum number of 15 allowing them to establish a charter. atFishers.com / JANUARY 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 29

The Canning family learned the benefits of pet therapy firsthand. Their oldest daughter has a chronic illness, requiring a number of lengthy hospitalizations. During their stays, they saw how pet therapy lifted their daughter’s spirit. Pet therapy made her smile, and it helped her more fully engage with her care. “When we got Quigley, we would take her with us for walks and on various errands,” Peter says. “She seemed to truly enjoy meeting people and folks responded positively to her, so we thought she might be a good therapy dog candidate. We worked on training her for about a year, and then went through the process of getting her registered.” Peter and Nancy say they are excited about establishing a pet therapy program at IU Health Saxony Hospital and look forward to sharing Quigley with Fishers residents visiting the hospital. IU Health Saxony Hospital is located at 13000 E 136th St in Fishers. For more information, visit iuhealth.org.
