SWEET MELISSA HONEY & HIVE LOCAL BUSINESS SPECIALIZES IN ALL-NATURAL PRODUCTS

Writer / Megan Arszman Photographer / Robby Berry

What was born out of necessity has now blossomed into a rich and rewarding venture for Melissa Wrin. After her daughter suffered a seizure in the middle of the night, she started researching potential environmental causes for seizures. The former registered dietician already understood the importance of nutrition, but she started to look at natural applications for the body and home. “I wanted to provide all-natural skin-care products that were healthier for my family,” Wrin says. Wrin’s husband Bill had just started to research beekeeping. It just so happens that the name Melissa means honeybee in Greek - an insect that had always captured her attention.

lotion bars. Because of this novel approach, the lotion bars took off thanks to word of mouth among family and friends. Wrin began selling products on social media and setting up a table at small events.

“I had always liked honeybees, but had never thought about keeping them until my husband had suggested it back in 2017,” she Sweet Melissa Honey & Hive has grown from just a backyard says. “He challenged me to start looking at ways we could utilize the venture to include approximately 40 hives around central Indiana, each maintained by Bill. beeswax.” An online search gave Wrin inspiration for a multitude of products that she could make at home including lip balms, paw balms and

“It’s a fun hobby for both of us,” Wrin says. “We love learning more about honeybees as well as educating others about them.” In fact, the couple cares for hives at some schools in Fishers, where they introduce the insect’s worth to teachers and students. They work with homeowners to keep hives on their property to help maintain the honeybee population, as well as pollenate local flower beds. In addition to the common application of honey as a natural sweetener or as a way to help battle seasonal allergies, the Wrins have come up with an all-natural beeswax product line for a variety of purposes. “Our lotion bars are very popular,” Wrin says. “Now we have bug repellent balm and itch balm. People really love our intensive heel balm, especially diabetics or anyone with dry, cracked heels.” For more info and to shop products online, visit beesweetmelissa.com.

customer success manager for May Mobility. “Recently we did a similar trial in downtown Indianapolis. That trial was very successful, but we wanted to try the program in a more suburban setting. Fishers was perfect for our next partnership.” The fleet consists of five hybrid Lexus RX 450h vehicles and one fully electric, wheelchair-accessible Polaris GEM vehicle. The free hop-on and hop-off service is part of the Together in Motion Indiana initiative, and is available Monday

through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with shuttles arriving every 10 to 15 minutes on a rotating loop. The threemile loop connects Pullman Pointe and SouthPointe Village apartments to the commercial district along Commercial Drive, Fishers Corner Boulevard, Municipal Drive and 116th Street, including a stop along the new Nickel Plate Trail.

“Our first goal was to showcase the technology behind autonomous vehicles,” Tucker says. “We also wanted to make an impact for the folks who live, work and play in the downtown Fishers area.” While the cars are autonomous, a trained person will be in each vehicle at all times to ensure safety for riders. This allows for intervention when necessary and route changes. Riders can see live updates on the shuttle’s locations on the Together in Motion Indiana website. “With our commitment to innovation, technology and entrepreneurship, it was a natural fit for Fishers to serve as the first suburban site for May Mobility’s autonomous vehicle fleet,” says Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. “Our Nickel Plate cultural district is the perfect test site for this technology as our partners identify the nuances of a suburban environment for autonomous technology.”

Each stop along the route is clearly marked with route information, and a QR code with information about May Mobility’s technology. “The cars operate on what is called a route network,” Tucker says. “Basically that is an internal map our engineers spend time building in each city where we have partnerships. Owner Shawn Jackson

Try It On

LOCAL RESIDENT OPENS FINERY BRIDAL BOUTIQUE Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Sam Zachrich

She applied for the job and never looked back.

Shawn Jackson never thought a suit for church would lead her to a career in the bridal industry, much less her own bridal boutique. Jackson opened Finery Bridal Boutique in Fishers on November 5.

Jackson worked with women who supported and encouraged her growth in the bridal industry along the way. She moved to Atlanta where she took an entry-level corporate job. She soon realized she missed the fun of working in a bridal boutique.

“I noticed a beautiful suit in the window of a boutique called the Posie Patch in Castleton,” Jackson says. “I went back a few times to look at it and see if it ever went on sale. The last time, I noticed a sign saying ‘Now Hiring.’ ”

“I ended up getting a part-time at Bridals by Lori from ‘Say Yes to the Dress’ fame,” Jackson says. “Lori Allen inspired me to have my own boutique someday.”

14 / TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022

Finery Bridal offers dresses by up-andcoming designers, along with well-known national and international brands. Jackson is particularly proud to bring on Pantora Bridal, recently featured on the Amazon series ‘Making the Cut.’ Her dresses range in price from $500 to $2,500. “I try to find moderately-priced vendors who can get dresses to me within six months,” Jackson says. “I would rather have fewer lines where I know I can get the dresses with a certain time frame. I offer Elly Couture, Moonlight Tango, Moonlight-Val Stefani, LuceSposa, and my private label, Finery by

Shawn Marie. I design the dresses and have a production team who makes them.” The boutique is nestled in downtown Fishers. Jackson chose the area based on the lack of options for brides in Fishers. “I loved the idea of being in an old, antique house with the floors that creak and the bigger bedrooms,” Jackson says. “The bedrooms serve as bridal suites where brides can try on dresses. It just gives our store a more intimate, family-like environment.”

Jackson waited to open her dream store until her son was in college. She felt she needed to focus all her time and attention on him until he graduated from high school. “I was poised to open last year but chose not to because of COVID,” Jackson says. “During that time I was selling veils and accessories online. I was just saving up and waiting. I started hearing from brides that they were ready to start having their weddings, so I thought now was a perfect time.” Jackson is a Fishers resident who finds joy in being a small part of a bride’s big day. loves watching families come in together and bond over choosing the perfect dress. “I love building relationships with my brides and I can tell you from experience, the day they buy their dress isn’t the last time I hear from them,” Jackson says. “They will call me and update me on their life or new babies. It’s just a great feeling to help someone.” Finery Bridal Boutique is located at 11500 Lantern Road in Fishers. For more information, call 317-537-2136 or visit finerybridal.com.

Welcome to Tony’s Café NEW EATERY IS BECOMING A LOCAL FAVORITE ON 96TH STREET

Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photographer / Kerch Creative

Tony’s Café is one of the newer breakfast and lunch spots in the Geist and Fishers area. The spot opened in 2020. “We wanted to open that June but we

couldn’t,” says Owner Martin Cuautlatl, referring to pandemic-related business shutdowns and restrictions. “So we opened August 2020.” Cuautlatl knows all too well the havoc that the shutdowns have wreaked on the TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / 17

restaurant industry. Prior to Tony’s Café, Cuautlatl, who has worked in restaurant industry for 20 years, owned Sherwood Cafe at the intersection of 56th Street and Post Road. March 2020, as businesses all over the world were shutting

Owner Martin Cuautlatl with his wife

down, he closed the doors to that cafe indefinitely. On April 4, 2020 he announced via Facebook that those doors would never reopen. Cuautlatl says he began looking for a new location immediately.

Along with the new location came a new name. Cuautlatl says he thought about naming the place after himself, but didn’t like the sound of Martin’s Café. He decided instead to name it after his son.

He found that location on East 96th Street, just west of Fall Creek Road.

“My son, his name is Tony - Antonio in Spanish - but we shortened it to Tony because we liked the sound of it,” he says.

“I think it’s much better,” he says of the new location. “I didn’t see any breakfast place around here.” Cuautlatl says he believes the visibility of Tony’s Café, which can be seen by drivers on 96th Street, is an advantage over the old location. “At our place on Post Road, it was very hard to see us,” he says. 18 / TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022

The name reflects the familial nature of the restaurant itself. His family helps him run it, and Cuautlatl cooks the food himself. “We do breakfast, lunch, and everything is made from scratch - homemade,” he says. Breakfast at Tony’s Café is served all day. The menu features 16 different types of omelets and 17 different skillets. When

asked what his favorite item on the menu is, Cuautlatl doesn’t have to think about it. “Chicken tenders,” he says. “Hand-breaded.” Five months after Sherwood Cafe closed, Tony’s Café opened to the public. Cuautlatl says the response has been positive over the last year. In addition to new customers, regulars from Sherwood Cafe have shown up to support the new establishment, which is open for dine-in and carry-out. “The response has been very good,” Cuautlatl says. “They love it.” Tony’s Café is located at 10600 East 96th Street in Fishers. Hours of operation are Tue. through Sat. 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sun. & Mon. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit tonyscafefishers. com, or give them a call at 317-731-4512, for more information including a menu page and updates on special events.

“As our numbers grew when the (2020) season started, our coaching staff of three grew to five by adding two volunteer coaches,” Ziino says. “This proved vital, because we were able to group kids into smaller numbers and space them out throughout the workouts. Some of the practices included working groups on certain sections of the course, where kids did not really see each other until the end of practice.”

The teams eventually had successful seasons. “In 2020 the girls team was HSE district champion for the third year in a row,” Ziino says. “They were third at the Riverside invite, and were fifth place at the Hamilton County Middle School Cross Country Championship. The boys team was second place at the HSE district meet, first place at the Riverside invite, and first place at the Hamilton County Middle School Cross Country Championship.” When he is not busy coaching, Ziino is also a teacher. “I actually teach at Fishers Junior High (FJH), and I am the ENL (English as a new language) teacher in the building,” Ziino says. “I came to coach at Fall Creek Junior High because when the building opened, they had an opportunity to build a program from scratch, plus FJH already had their coaching staff in place.”

Ziino says the cross country program at Fall Creek Junior High is successful because of the parents, athletes and coaches. “It needs all three to come together to be competitive year in and year out,” Ziino says. “We can’t thank our parents enough for their trust to work with their athletes. I’m telling people to look for a call-out meeting next spring, and during the summers we host the Summer Runnin’ series as well as Camp Iwannarun (for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade students).” During the 2021 season, Coach Ziino’s track and field team swept the district meet, for both the boys and girls. help you lose weight?” The answer is yes as long as the patient commits to living a nontoxic lifestyle. “If you live on beer, Ding Dongs and Twinkies, that weight won’t go away,” Dr. Seland says. However, they have a new weight-loss program that combines red light therapy with healthy eating that does wonders. “People who [follow a healthy nutritional protocol] and come in three times a week for red light therapy and do that for 90 days will lose some serious weight,” Dr. Seland says. How often patients receive these treatments is dependent on their needs. Some come in once a week while others may require a pit stop three times a week, which again involve quick 15-minute sessions. “I have chronic joint pain from all the lifting I’ve done over the years as well as some disc issues, and I come out feeling energized,” Dr. Seland says. “It’s like a battery charger for the body.” Red light therapy is especially great for peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain such as joint arthritis. Many patients have even reported positive side effects from the treatment — for instance, relief from

hand pain. “So many people are typing away in front of a computer all day long so they get neck pain, hand pain, shoulder pain,” Dr. Seland says. “This is the best red light therapy for pain and it compliments our Chiropractic Care perfectly” Each red light therapy session costs $50 though packages of three are available for $129. They’re also offering other promotions and discounts for regular chiropractic and weight-loss patients. Though insurance does not pay for treatment, patients can tap into their medical savings accounts. Nauticus Laser Therapy and Wellness Center is unquestionably unique. Because while you can go anywhere to see a chiropractor for relief, not all chiropractors can send you on a Nordic adventure in your pilgrimage for better health. “My success as a Chiropractic Physician has been that I take a structural approach to people,” Dr. Seland says. “I use X-rays like blueprints and I remodel them for a living.” That remodel includes restoring hope to those who have all but lost it. According to Dr. Seland, many people have come to the end of their rope where their health is TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 25

D1 CUSTOMS HSE STUDENT STARTS CUSTOM SHOE BUSINESS

As the world shut down in 2020 and retreated into quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people found themselves with plenty of free time on their hands. Some people took up baking, some decided to learn an instrument, and then 13-year-old Dillon O’Rourke of Fishers started his own business. “D1 Customs is a shoe customization business, where I customize and paint shoes for people who order them through my website or through my social platforms,” says O’Rourke, founder of D1 Customs. “I’ve always liked shoes and I thought that this would be a cool way to expand upon that interest.” O’Rourke, an eighth grader at Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Intermediate & Junior High School, has no formal art or design training, and he’s used the time afforded to him by the shutdowns to teach himself. “I just did a lot of research,” O’Rourke says. “I just watched a lot of videos about it, and used trial and error. I watched a few videos about it and I got interested, and so I decided I should try it on some old pairs of shoes. Then after that it kind of just kicked off, and I started making them for real customers.” The first pair of shoes O’Rourke sold was a pair of Hamilton Southeastern Nike Air Force 1 shoes. The project took him about 10 hours to complete. O’Rourke says customers usually have an idea of what kind of design they want when they approach him about ordering a pair of shoes. He walks them through the design process, perfecting the design idea and then working out how he’s going to pull it off. “Usually the customer will contact me and order them,” O’Rourke says. “Then I will make a few mock-ups on a device, and send it back to them and discuss designs with them. I usually get the shoes from Finish Line or Dick’s Sporting Goods, or the Nike website.” TownePost.com / JANUARY 2022 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 27

After that, O’Rourke applies acetone to the shoe and then tapes off all of the parts he doesn’t want to get paint on. “I usually hand-paint or use my airbrush for most of the shoes I do,” O’Rourke says. “I also create and use custom stencils, which help me with a lot of my designs and detailed patterns.” From there, he laces the shoes up and then delivers them to the customer. “I prefer to deliver them in person so I can see the customer’s response,” he says. “Since I like to involve the customer in the design process, they are usually really excited to see the final product, and I like to see that my work has made someone happy. I usually deliver the shoes to the customers by either setting up a time to meet with them, or if they do not live close, I also can ship the shoes.” O’Rourke says that depending on the design, it can take him six to 20 hours of

“ SINCE I LIKE TO INVOLVE THE CUSTOMER IN THE DESIGN PROCESS, THEY ARE USUALLY REALLY EXCITED TO SEE THE FINAL PRODUCT, AND I LIKE TO SEE THAT MY WORK HAS MADE SOMEONE HAPPY.” — DILLON O’ROURKE work to complete a pair of shoes. Because he’s normally working on multiple orders at a time, he says it can take two to three weeks to get a pair of shoes to a customer. Demand, he says, is highest around the holidays. D1 Customs has garnered interest from a variety of people. “It’s pretty much everyone,” O’Rourke says. “Some parents order for their kids, and some students at HSE and Fishers order for themselves. I’ve had some professional athletes that I’ve made shoes for, and some coaches.” O’Rourke designed a pair of shoes for star lacrosse player and co-founder of the Premier Lacrosse League, Paul Rabil. O’Rourke says the blue and white Nikes adorned with a Johns Hopkins University logo are his favorite pair of shoes that he’s designed. What started as a quarantine hobby has become a full-fledged entrepreneurial endeavor, and O’Rourke hopes to continue bringing people joy in the form of custom shoes. “I’d like to continue to grow my business, get more customers, and offer people one-of-a-kind shoes that are made to represent their interests and styles, because I really enjoy doing that,” he says. “I also enjoy seeing people’s reactions when I give them their shoes. It’s my 100% favorite part.” For more info on D1 Customs including product images and more, visit instagram. com/d1customs.studio/.

Her passion for the studio and love of yoga propelled her to make the change.

As a student at Honor Yoga in Fishers, local resident Kayla Marando was devastated to learn her favorite yoga studio was closing in 2021. The owner couldn’t sustain the business during the height of the 2020 business shutdowns. Initially Marando thought she’d buy the studio, but quickly shut the idea down.

“I’ve been in management for years,” Marando says. “Even in management, you always have at least one person above you. I had wanted to own my own business, but I didn’t have any radical new ideas so I just thought it wasn’t happening any time soon.” Marando says yoga has done much for health, not only physically but also mentally. As soon as she started learning the pillars of yoga like meditation and chakras, she could center herself. She felt like a better wife, parent and community member.

“I was a member at the studio and I loved it,” Marando says. “I had been looking for a yoga community for a long time and finally felt like I found my place when I became a member at Honor Yoga. I connected with the instructors and other members immediately.” Honor Yoga offers 12 different yoga classes catering to everyone from beginners to Marando tabled the idea of buying the advanced yoga devotees. It’s one of the only studio because she knew it was a franchise studios in the area to provide aerial yoga. and thought someone would purchase it The class uses aerial silk to create poses immediately. She hoped that meant the with less gravitational pull on the body than studio would only be closed for a short traditional yoga, and a more compressionperiod. Then she received an email stating free practice. I interviewed with the founder of Honor Yoga, and here I am as the new owner.”

“I would take my yoga class on Saturday mornings, then drive home and get my kids and bring them back for their class,” Marando says. “Now we’re offering the kids class at the same time as the adults class to make it a little easier for parents.”

Marando worked for five years as the office manager of a local chiropractic clinic. At the same time, she was happy with what she was doing but felt compelled to do more. She had always wanted to own her own business, but she didn’t know what that business would be.

Marando wants Fishers residents to experience the calming effect yoga has had on her. She is hosting a grand opening on January 15 beginning at noon. There will be activities for kids and adults, in addition to 30-minute sample classes.
