A HOMEGROWN LEADER: SCOTT SPILLMAN TAKES OVER AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT S.P.O.R.T.S.

Things have certainly come full circle for Scott Spillman. As a kid growing up in Fishers and attending Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) schools, Spillman participated in various baseball, soccer and basketball leagues under the umbrella of S.P.O.R.T.S. (Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports), a community-based youth athletics organization founded in 1987. At the time he had little expectation that he’d eventually assume the mantle of executive director of that same organization years later.

Trevor and Kata Ewigleben officially adopted their daughter Tasha in May, 2017.

S A N D C R E E K I N T E R M E D I A T E S TA F F SHARE ADOPTION JOURNEYS Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Provided Photography

Lindsay Cortelyou, an art teacher at Sand Creek Intermediate (SCI), and her husband Anthony, a fifth-grade math teacher at the same school, desperately wanted to start a family. After struggling with infertility and several failed attempts at IVF, they began researching adoption.

In 2015, they got in touch with Adoptions of Indiana, located in Carmel. The birth mom, who chose the Cortelyous to be the parents, was gracious enough to include the couple in her pregnancy. She also insisted Lindsay and Anthony name the baby.

a T name, too — Taizly Grace.”

During their adoption journey, the Cortelyous learned that within their school building several other families were going through (or had been through) the adoption process as well. “The birth mom had six other children, all From the start of their marriage, Trevor with names that began with a T,” Lindsay and Kata Ewigleben knew that they wanted says. “We honored her tradition by choosing to grow their family through adoption. atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7

After doing some research, the Ewiglebens’ hearts broke for the nearly 10,000 children who are currently placed in Indiana’s foster care. They became licensed therapeutic foster parents through The Villages, and Tasha was placed in their home. Though they adored loving on their little girl, the slowness of the court system and the constant uncertainty surrounding foster care made some days unbearable. “As you and the child begin to bond, there’s constant fear that they’ll be pulled from your home and will have to go back into an unstable living situation,” says Kata, a music teacher at SCI who was overjoyed when Tasha officially joined their family in May 2017. The SCI colleagues have found that adoption often has a negative stigma attached to it, and they want to help change that perception. People sometimes make condescending comments like, “It’s a shame the mom didn’t want her baby,” or judgmental ones like, “How could she give her baby away?”

Chris and Katie Hamon adopted their daughter, Nina, from Nicaragua.

“We’re not heroes. We didn’t rescue a child,” Lindsay says. “We’re just ordinary people wanting a family.” In 2016, Chris and Katie Hamon traveled to Nicaragua to adopt their daughter, Nina, who was six months old at the time. Chris (a science teacher at SCI) and Katie (a math and language arts teacher) were initially disappointed when the typical three-month process stretched into nine months. “Despite the many ups and downs, we look at the time spent in Nicaragua as a special time of bonding and experiencing our daughter’s birth country and culture,” Katie says. Sixteen years ago, Cathy Short, an art teacher at SCI, consulted the Adoption Support Center in Broad Ripple. “The process was stressful,” Cathy says. “We were lined up a couple of times with a birth mother only to find that they had decided to keep their unborn child.” Ultimately, Evelyn Alexis Kassandra (Lexi) became Cathy’s daughter, and from the start, Cathy has been open and honest with Lexi.

Lindsay Cortelyou and her husband Anthony adopted Taizly Grace in 2015 through Adoptions of Indiana.

8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atFishers.com

“Adoption is a wonderful process and I never wanted to hide that from Lexi,” Cathy says. “It took a great amount of love and courage from her birth mother to put her up for adoption. I’ll forever keep Lexi’s birth mother in my heart for she put Lexi in my arms forever to love.” The Cortelyous agree.

Sixteen years ago, the Short family adopted Evelyn Alexis Kassandra after being connected with her through the Adoption Support Center in Broad Ripple.

“We know that our birth mom’s greatest void is our biggest joy,” Lindsay adds. The same could be said for the adopted children. Bryan Alig, Assistant Principal at SCI, always tells his students, whom he knows were adopted, that he was adopted, too. “That gives us a connection and helps them know that it’s something not to be ashamed of, but to be proud of, because somebody chose us.” Alig says. For those who are looking to adopt, these teachers provide wise council. “For anyone interested in adopting from foster care, find a support system and daily choose peace for there is great joy ahead,” Kata says. Randy and Cindi Curnutt, who adopted son Matthew in the spring of 1993 preach perseverance when starting down the adoption path. “My persistent husband checked each month with the agency to make sure our profile was being presented to birth moms,” says Cindi, a sixthgrade language arts and social studies teacher at SCI. When Matthew joined the family, their lives were brightened exponentially. “There will be difficulties, lots of paperwork and times of waiting and uncertainty,” Katie says. “But the joys can far outweigh these temporary struggles.” “The key is finding patience and peace,” Lindsay says. atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 9

HSE WOMEN’S SOCCER COACH, GREG DAVIDSON, REFLECTS ON INTERNATIONAL COACHING EXPERIENCE Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Greg Davidson has many coaching achievements under his belt – he’s won more than 275 games throughout his 19 years and counting as head coach of the Hamilton Southeastern High School (HSE) women’s varsity soccer team, holds multiple conference, sectional and regional titles and has coached 38 players who went on to play Division I soccer. Still, one accolade that will always hold a special place in his heart is having had the chance to coach the USA men’s Under-18 soccer team at last June’s 2017 United World Games (UWG), an annual youth sporting event held in Europe with teams from all over the globe in more than 10 sports categories.

Last May, just as he began contemplating plans for his brief time off in the summer from coaching and guidance counselor duties at HSE, Davidson got an intriguing phone call from a colleague. Apparently the college coach who was scheduled to lead the U.S. men’s U-18 team at the 13th annual UWG had chosen to step away from the position due to a family matter. Davidson was asked point blank if he would fill the role and learned that, should he accept, he would be the only non-college coach in the history of the UWG to lead a U.S. team at the event. “I knew it would be a great opportunity,” says Davidson, who played four years of semi-pro soccer in Indiana from 1989 through 1992, and currently serves as president of the Indiana Soccer Coaches atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11

Association. “The U.S.A. organizational group did a one-hour phone interview with me, and the next thing I know I’m asking my wife if it would be okay if I went to Europe for 10 days. I was thankful they were willing to branch out and have a high school coach with some experience.” After a meeting in New York where Davidson got to know his team, which consisted of soccer standouts from California, New York, Florida, Dallas and several points in between, the group boarded a plane for Munich, Germany, for several days of training and teambuilding exercises. “One of the highlights was this really long team bike ride we did through Munich with a tour guide,” says Davidson, who had never been overseas prior to the event. “We got

to know each other a little bit and got some fitness at the same time. It was a really good team bonding atmosphere.” After only a few formal practices during which Davidson had an opportunity to observe his players and figure out game formations, the team headed for the Austria-based UWG, the structure of which he says is similar to the Pan American games. Despite limited time for practice and game preparation, Davidson says the U.S. team put in a reasonably strong performance, advancing past the first round with a 1-1-1 record before losing to Italy 2-1 in a close match. “I think we played our best against Italy,” he recalls. “We got better every game, and I think if we’d had a little more time we could have shown better. But it’s surprising how quickly we came together.” Davidson was struck by the level of sportsmanship and respect displayed by young athletes from 38 countries who participated at the World Games, both on and off the field. “My team played hard, and I think we showed that American soccer is better than what it has been in past years,” he says. “What I saw after every game was a mutual respect. It was different than what you get sometimes in our environment here in America with competition – whether you won or lost, the respect was very mutual and all the kids honored the game.”

HSE coach, Greg Davidson got to coach the USA men’s Under-18 soccer team at last June’s 2017 United World Games (UWG).

Looking back, Davidson feels the entire experience, from the initial gathering in New York to a post-tournament team sightseeing trip through Venice, Milan and Lake Como, Italy, before returning to the states, was edifying in both a coaching and a personal capacity. “I’m now on the national board with United Soccer Coaches, which has afforded me some opportunities to do seminars and some coaching and clinics throughout America,” Davidson says. “So I’ve been privileged to be able to do some things in the U.S., but to be able to do it at an international level, I feel very privileged. It’s a feather in my cap that I didn’t think I would ever be able to place there.” 12 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2018 / atFishers.com

FRESH BREW

Della Leva Espresso Bar Brings a Touch of Italy to Fishers Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Just five years after graduating from Ball State University, Bridget Edgeworth is already fulfilling a goal. For years she had dreamed of opening an upscale Italianstyle coffee shop. When property became available in a sought-after area of Fishers, real estate developer John Edgeworth,

Bridget’s father, built a strip center. Father and daughter then joined forces and partnered together to bring the Della Leva Espresso Bar to life. They opened their doors initially the first week of December and held a grand opening in early January. Located at the bustling corner of 106th and Lantern Road, Della Leva is part of

new development in the area. Plans for the Italian-style coffee shop were tweaked a bit when Bridget discovered that the coffee shop could accommodate a drive-through. “Since we were able to get a drive-thru in this space, we tried to find the balance between having a comfortable sit-down vibe, while balancing speed and getting people out the door,” she says.

To prepare for co-ownership of Della Leva, after graduation Bridget started working full time at a coffee shop in Chicago to immerse herself in the business. It was truly an artisanal learning experience. She was instructed on how to properly care for coffee beans and tea leaves, while studying the back-end operations of the business too. Bridget Edgeworth co-owns Della Leva Espresso Bar located at 8220 E 106th St Suite 200, Fishers.

Bridget took all that experience and applied it to Della Leva. The shop, named after Bridget’s Italian grandmother, carries a full line of high-end coffee sourced from the Midwest under the Della Leva brand name. It also offers Mighty Leaf teas. In addition, the espresso bar features breakfast and lunch fare including pastries and scones made inhouse and salads and sandwiches. Naturally, you can’t be immersed in coffee for years without becoming obsessed with it. “I have a huge caffeine kick because I started working in these coffee shops, and I stated drinking espresso, really getting into the espresso a couple of years ago,” she says. That obsession was only fed by a trip to Ybor City, Florida, where Bridget discovered the famous strip filled with a long line of quirky espresso shops with Havana Cuban coffee. “I’ve never had such a caffeine kick in my life. I don’t think I’ve ever come down,” she says. Indeed, right now Bridget’s favorite coffee drink is a cortado, a mix of equal parts espresso and steamed milk. To young adults like herself who would like to start a business, Bridget advises surrounding themselves with positive and supportive people. She also emphasized the importance of a long-term view. “Keep your eye on the big picture because it will be a rocky road,” she says. “But everything in life that is really memorable and wonderful has its up and downs. The big picture helps you get through all that.”

GALLERY AT FISHERS CITY HALL SHOWCASES MORE THAN 50 PIECES OF ART Writer / Jocelyn Vare Artwork by Chase Cannon

If you have shopped at the Fishers Farmers Market in the summer or attended a Tuesday night show at the Amphitheater, you’ve been steps away from a hidden art gallery. This gallery displays artwork from local and regional artists in new exhibits throughout the year and is free to visit. From the outside, the art gallery doesn’t look like an art gallery at all. It looks like City Hall.

“Art in City Hall” is the appropriatelynamed art gallery presented by Nickel Plate Arts, Fishers Arts Council and the City of Fishers. The gallery space is both floors of the Fishers City Hall’s large atrium and showcases about 50 different pieces of art, each one usually available for purchase. The 2018 gallery schedule features nine different art exhibits to celebrate the creativity and diversity of the entire community. The February exhibit is a part of the community’s recognition of Black History atFishers.com / FEBRUARY 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 19

Month and showcases presentations from Fall Creek Junior High students. Seventh and eighth graders have created displays that celebrate the stories and impact of African-Americans in our country. The exhibit shares the history and triumphs of Black Americans beginning with the roots of slavery from Africa. Art in City Hall gives students the opportunity to present their work outside of school and connect with Fishers residents. The March exhibit coincides with this year’s

local art celebration of American Disabilities Act Awareness Month, an initiative led by Cecilia Coble, Fishers City Councilor and Chairperson of the Fishers ADA Roundtable. The Art in City Hall exhibit in March will feature the work of Central Indiana artists with disabilities. A special reception will be held on Friday, March 2, to welcome Fishers residents to Art in City Hall to view this art exhibit, meet the artists and enjoy performances, too. The annual “High School Senior Showcase” will open in April and run through the spring. This exhibit is one of the favorite Art in City Hall exhibits each year and features the work of graduating seniors from Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School. Students are guided by their art teachers to prepare their work for this exhibit and price for sale. A free public reception will be scheduled to meet the artists, view their artwork and celebrate HSE Schools’ art teachers. After six seasons, Art in City Hall has proven to be a springboard for local artists to pursue their craft. Chase Cannon is a Fishers resident and participated in Art in City Hall’s Senior Showcase just before she graduated from HSE High School in 2016. Cannon participated as a featured artist in an Art in City Hall exhibit again in 2017. In her second exhibit, she presented photography about her life in Paris after she graduated from high school. Today, Cannon is back in Indiana and will be attending Herron School of Art and Design this fall. “The part I liked most about exhibiting at Art in City Hall was the sense of affirmation that came with realizing that I am good enough to exist as an artist beyond high school,” Cannon says. “Exhibiting in a community space led to meeting so many citizens who recognized me as an artist and that really strengthened my sense of accomplishment.” The month of June is devoted to an exhibit featuring professional Indiana artists who are members of Indiana Artists. Originally founded in 1917 as the Indiana Artists Club, Indiana Artists (IN/A) will display the work of more than 60 artists at Art in

Local artists will be featured at Art in City Hall during the month of July as well. The Hamilton County Artists’ Association is a long-standing membership organization of artists from Hamilton County. The organization’s juried exhibit will be a highlight during the annual Arts Crawl event in the Nickel Plate District. In August, the Art in City Hall exhibit will be devoted to life on the prairie. Conner Prairie will present artwork and artifacts to bring the interactive historical museum experience out to Fishers residents.

Because personal care matters.

Art in City Hall’s fall and winter exhibits will have a seasonal flair. Bountiful harvests of Indiana will be the theme of artwork showcased in September and October and will feature the beautiful landscape, agriculture and forestry imagery of the state. A winter wonderland art exhibit will be presented in December as a perfect complement to the holiday light displays that surround City Hall that time of year.

Central Indiana Orthopedics is currently accepting patients at our Fishers practice, located within St. Vincent Fishers. Next time you suffer a strain, feel something pop or are just tired of pain, we can help. Our commitment to personalized care guides our surgeons, physicians and staff to develop a treatment plan that works for you. We offer a full range of orthopedic services, provided by our supportive team who is dedicated to getting you back to being active.

As residents explore the Nickel Plate District in Fishers this year, Art in City Hall will greet them with creative artwork and diverse exhibits. Art in City Hall coordinator and Fishers Arts Council board member, Tom Rich, invites Fishers residents and artists to connect at the special exhibit space. “Fishers Arts Council is reaching out to a number of visual and performing groups to expand opportunities for artists to share their work with the Fishers community,” Rich says. “We will engage artists, community and schools together at Art in City Hall every month of the year. In 2018, ‘art in Fishers’ is a given, not a question.”

With 12 different leagues and 13 sports including track, volleyball, cheerleading and lacrosse under its umbrella, S.P.O.R.T.S. has been a non-profit entity from day one, founded by volunteer parents and school administrators 30 years ago to pool resources toward more efficient planning and structuring of local youth sports. All participants, from players to coaches to board members, must reside within the HSE school district. Spillman says S.P.O.R.T.S. had approximately 10,000 registrants in 2017 against about 21,000 HSE school attendees, and he plans to intensify marketing of the organization in an attempt to increase participation. “We understand not everybody loves sports, and there’s arts and theater and plenty of other activities that kids like to get involved in, but we’d like to up that number,” he says. Spillman considers it an honor to assume the role formerly occupied by Carlino, who

was given the Key to the City of Fishers by Mayor Scott Fadness on December 6 for her dedication to improving HSE youth sports programs. After 18 years with S.P.O.R.T.S., Carlino says she’ll miss working with many of the 2,000-plus annual volunteers who help make each team and league operate smoothly for the kids. “Some of the volunteers have full-time jobs and then put in an extra 30-40 hours a week helping to make sure everybody’s kid has a place to go to play ball,” says Carlino, who plans to spend more time volunteering after stepping down from the executive director role and currently serves as a board member with the Fishers Youth Assistance Program. “They’re amazing people.” With the rise in travel-related youth sports leagues, Spillman says promoting the benefits of a locally focused sports organization is more crucial than ever.

“Volunteerism is down across the country, not just in youth sports but in general,” he explains. “We’re seeing more and more people wanting to spend their non-work time on experiences for themselves, so the thought process of giving back to your community is not as top-of-mind as maybe it once was. So I’m going to really work hard on trying to give back

to the volunteers and stress that this can be as much a social thing as a community volunteer type of situation.” For additional info on S.P.O.R.T.S including volunteer opportunities and registration information, visit hsesports.org. S.P.O.R.T.S. is located at 12690 Promise Road or give them a call at 317-845-5582.

Technology Interiors recently relocated its showroom to 8977 East 116th Street in Fishers, where customers can learn firsthand about its various video, audio and automation options and services. Customers will also be able to check out the company’s brand-new video wall, a first of its kind in the U.S., at the new showroom. “This showroom will have five movie theaters, a video wall, a grand piano and so much more than most people have ever imagined in an electronic store boutique,” says owner Rick Goren. Since 1998, Technology Interiors has served Central Indiana with home theater audio and video installations and is currently the state’s No. 1 seller of home theater screens and projectors, according to Goren. The company’s new showroom will also be home to the first JBL Synthesis in the Midwest — a 22-channel, 180-inch screen theater. “The new laser projectors will blow your mind when you see how spectacular the image is, and the new paradigm Personna, the pinnacle of the audio-video industry, will be prominently displayed in our showroom too,” Goren adds. Technology Interiors will also highlight the newest and latest technologies for video conferencing and huddle rooms. The camera system is a state-of-the-art 4K analytic and forensic tracking camera system. “It’s a high level of learning every day to keep up with thousands of brands, as technology exponentiates,” Goren says. “We have to stay educated, and we do that through attending trade shows multiple times a year in San Diego and Orlando.” As for Technology Interiors’ new showroom, Goren says you’ll have to see it to believe it. “I really let the designer go wild with the showroom, and the creativity flows throughout the new facility from the moment you walk in,” Goren says.
