CELEBRATING INCLUSION

FISHERS HONORING DISABILITY AWARENESS WITH EVENTS THROUGHOUT MARCH Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Amy Payne & the City of Fishers

Every March, the Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities sends out information and resources throughout the state to heighten awareness about intellectual and physical disabilities. Ever since Fishers became a city in 2016, the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability (FACD) and the City of Fishers celebrate Disability Awareness Month with a series of special events and programs, designed to let the public know what life is like for those with disabilities. This year’s theme is “Building Our Inclusive Community.” To celebrate, the FACD is producing a video montage that spotlights

the collaborations occurring among city leaders, business owners, community partners, the disability community, and direct-service providers. “We’re highlighting the things we’ve done to build awareness and bring more opportunities for employment, social life, accommodations, and accessibility for the people of Fishers who have intellectual and developmental disabilities,” says Cecilia Coble, Fishers City Council president and FACD co-chair. “As a community, we lean into being vibrant, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking and inclusive,” adds Kelly Hartman, FACD co-chair. “I think it’s really an amazing testament to the leadership of our city MARCH 2021

that we take the time to celebrate that and see the goodness in folks with disabilities, people who employ those with disabilities, and people who include people with disabilities in all facets of our community. Fishers is a place all people get to live, play, love, and be a part of a community that celebrates all that.” Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic, most of the month-long events are virtual, including the kickoff event on March 1, which includes keynote speaker Ben Trockman, diversity and inclusion specialist at Old National Bank. The FACD has partnered with OneZone, the local Chamber of Commerce, to empower local employers to hire individuals

with disabilities. “We’ve had relationships with employers here in Fishers, but this opens it up even deeper to the Hamilton County community at large,” Coble says. “We’re super excited about that.” According to Hartman, the pre-COVID unemployment rate among citizens in Fishers was well under 3% month after month. Hamilton County is typically in the bottom five or six counties in the state for unemployment. “What people don’t realize is that we have folks with disabilities who have skills and are employable, and the unemployment rate amongst folks who are qualified to be working is around 70%,” Hartman says. “In these times folks definitely have gaps in the jobs they are able to accomplish with their current workforce - particularly in the service industry like hotels and restaurants.” In 2018 the Advisory Committee formed the Fishers Disability Inclusion in the Workplace Business Networking

Group, to connect Fishers businesses to potential job candidates. On March 10, members of the Advisory Committee and the Networking Group will present “Expanding Your Applicant Pool: Exploring the Untapped Workforce” at OneZone’s business luncheon. Kylee Hope, the director of Indiana’s Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services, will share a global perspective on employing individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. “We’ll share success stories of employers and employees around the Fishers and Carmel areas,” Coble says. To celebrate Disability Awareness Month, the Fishers PRISM Project (developed by Ball State University) will perform a virtual show. In addition, an inclusive rhythmic gymnastics group will perform. “We work together to provide opportunities, whether it’s through the arts, athletics, education, or social,” Coble says. “We want the community to know we have a lot of resources here in Fishers.”

MARCH 2021

On March 12 there will be a “Celebration of Inclusion through Art” event at Conner Prairie. There’s a reverse job fair scheduled at Grace Church on March 23. This is an opportunity for people with disabilities to pass their resumes along to employers in the community. Another popular event is “My Point of View Day,” where people with disabilities have breakfast with the mayor, elected officials and city staff to participate in a roundtable discussion about the challenges they face. “It’s very impactful,” Coble says. “Through those discussions, the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability works on initiatives and collaborations with all of our partners to try and move the ball forward.” In addition to Hamilton East Public Library’s events and programs that celebrate Disability Awareness Month, the City of Fishers has launched a city lifestyle website called “This is Fishers.” Every Wednesday in March, it will highlight a different story of an organization or individual related to inclusion. The city’s social media network will also share statistics related to

disabilities, frequently asked questions, resources, videos and photos. In September of 2020 the Thrive Social Club, an inclusive social club for individuals 18 and older, was formed due to the stress and isolation of the pandemic. “Once someone with a disability ages out of high school, they can feel a lot of isolation because those friendships and organized events are no longer available as an adult,” says Coble, noting that the club, which meets weekly via Zoom, has been hosting lots of fun events like dance parties, bingo and scavenger hunts. Throughout the past year, the FACD and the City of Fishers have helped to solidify the first-ever affordable and accessible housing initiative in Fishers - SouthPointe Village Apartments. “We were able to do that through making a commitment between the developer of that affordable housing and the disability community, providing a specific number of units set aside for the workforce and a specific number of units set aside for people with disabilities,” Hartman says. “People can age in their own community and not have to move to Marion County because they want to move out of their parents’ house. This is just another way that Fishers is looking to be a city for all people.” The City of Fishers offices are located at 1 Municipal Drive. LET’S GET COOKIN’ NEW SAHM EATERY HOSS BAR & GRILL OPENS ON EAST 96TH STREET

Owner Eddie Sahm

“We had to consolidate a little bit, and get our bearings at that point,” says Sahm, who, along with his father Ed, co-owns and operates a family of restaurants including The Roost, Rockstone Pizzeria & Pub, Big Lug Can-teen and several Sahm’s eatery locations. “We knew it was going to change the way our business functions. We’re pretty well represented in Fishers, so we had to consolidate as we were changing to focus more on delivery and carry-out, and the marketplace we put together.” Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Hoss Bar & Grill, the new establishment at East 96th Street and Hague Road that opened in February, is named after coowner Eddie Sahm’s grandfather William Sahm’s nickname. In addition to this homage to his family legacy, Sahm says the restaurant itself is a reflection of what his grandfather represented. “My grandfather passed away before I was born, and my dad was about 13 at that time, so I never knew him, but he’s kind of this

larger-than-life figure that everybody knew,” Sahm explains. “He was head of the Catholic Youth Organization in Indianapolis, and did a lot of work with local parks. They named a park after him when he passed away. He meant a lot to a lot of people in Indianapolis because of his kindness. I wanted to con-tinue his sense of generosity and contribution with the restaurant.” Shortly after the pandemic took hold in March of 2020, Sahm says he and his team permanently closed Sahm’s Bar & Grill, the establishment that formerly operated where Hoss now sits. MARCH 2021

Sahm describes the food at Hoss, headed up by Chef Blake Ellis, as hav-ing an “elevated highway pit-stop feel,” and the menu includes some unique creations like a Captain Crunch fried chicken sandwich with a crisp and lightly sweet crust, as well as a vegetarian casserole, smothered chicken, mashed potatoes and more. The dessert menu features peach cobbler, soft serve, and a Hoss Sundae, which is made with Count Chocu-la and Cocoa Puffs cereals. “We have a really unique burger - what you see right now at a lot of places is a smashed

burger with a thin, crisp patty, and they’re great, but we’re doing our Hoss Burger, which is big, thick and juicy,” Sahm says. “There’s a vegetarian substitute too. We’re making our roll in-house, which very few people do. Hattie McDaniel, a baker here in Indy who’s awesome, is leading the charge developing that.” The 100% indoor capacity at Hoss tops out at 196, while outdoor dining can accommodate up to 48 people at full capacity. “We’ll be operating according to city mandates for seating, of course,” Sahm adds. Sahm had begun to visualize the Hoss concept back in 2015, and after closing the doors to the 96th Street Sahm’s location, it was a matter of making that vision a reality. “I had a rough vision for the design, and what the service style would be like,” he says. “I had ideas for how we would portray my grandfather’s legacy, and the style of food that was a little bit more upscale than what we were doing - a more elevated type of bar food - and was an homage to the highway diner style that we all know, with big plates of food with no frills.” He feels that despite the pandemic, the timing is favorable for the eatery’s opening. “We’re hoping that as we open up and when we move into April and May, we’ll get a lot more outdoor activity where people want to space out out-side,” Sahm says. “We have a good patio here and we’ll have it ready to go by the end of March, with some additions.” Sahm says COVID-19 has brought many challenges to all of his and his father’s

locations, but he and his staff members have adapted along the way. “We’ve been able to maintain a good amount of our staff through all of this, and were able to receive some Paycheck Protection Program money, and now it’s just time to get this new concept going as the summer comes,” he says. “I think the timing lines up pretty well.” Sahm hopes Hoss Bar & Grill contributes to the ongoing growth of the Fishers area as what he feels is a diverse, vibrant community. “Whether it’s places like Four Day Ray, or organizations like The Yard, so many people are putting so much effort into creating this movement around identifying Fishers as a unique place that’s gearing for the future and growing,” he says. “That’s something I’ve admired, and was something my dad did back in the 80s. He was always promoting Fishers and doing what he could to help schools and churches here. I consider this res-taurant just part of my contribution to that.” Hoss Bar & Grill is located at 7870 East 96th Street in Fishers. For more information, call 317-841-3014 or visit hossbarandgrill.com.

SMITH FAMILY REALTY 317-690-2524 smithfamilyrealtyindy.com

SMITH FAMILY REALTY create our own brand and have control of the marketing and business decisions.

Mother-Daughter Duo Paula & Melissa Smith

“Melissa joining in 2018 made starting my own business an easy decision as we were able to work flawlessly together even while she maintained another career at the beginning,” Paula adds.

Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

this is not the case for one local motherdaughter duo.

Hard work and putting their clients first over the past 17 years is turning their real estate business into a new brand – their own brokerage firm. After spending their entire lives on the northeast side of Indianapolis and giving back to this wonderful community, this mother-daughter duo has started their own real estate company and are working together full time. Now, they are ready to add you to their real estate family!

Paula Smith has been a Realtor for the past 17 years to include being awarded the Angie’s List Super Service Award for the past 11 years as well as the 5 Star Real Estate Award. A few years ago, her daughter, Melissa Smith, joined her real estate group. In 2020, they decided they were ready to venture out and create their own local real estate company, Smith Family Realty.

The mother-daughter bond can be strong but starting a business together can introduce a whole new fabulous dimension to their relationship. Although a business relationship can be challenging at times,

“I was already doing the majority of the work of a managing broker and now had my daughter working at my side,” Paula says. “I just didn’t have the credentials. So, I took the managing broker class and as a family, we decided it made the most sense for us to start our own company, where we could MARCH 2021

“Previously, I was teaching and, at first, I loved it,” Melissa says. “With time, I decided I wanted to do something different. Naturally, after some thought and many conversations, I took the summer of 2018 to get my real estate license. For a few years, I did both. Eventually, after teaching during the day and coming home in the evening to work my real estate job, I decided that I wanted to do real estate full time.” Melissa believes her background in teaching carries over into her real estate career. “Real estate doesn’t feel like work to me,” Melissa says. “I enjoy the whole process including teaching people about buying and selling a home. A lot of my friends are still buying their first home, so in a way, I am able to teach them about the process and show them beautiful homes at the same time. I love being a source of information and educating people. I have been training to do this job since the age of 12 and didn’t even realize it.” Paula is proud of starting her woman-owned business. Smith Family Realty is a small, woman-owned business with homegrown, Central Indiana Realtors who will provide

personal, professional and authentic service throughout your home buying and/or selling experience that is easy, comfortable and ultimately enjoyable.

have joined our family for years to come.”

“I feel this is extremely important because I am showing my daughters and others in my life what can be accomplished,” Paula says. “The fact that I began and am managing Smith Family Realty on my own is very important to me and exhibits setting a goal and going after it.”

“David recently started in the industry after previously working in the EMS field,” Paula says. “His primary area of focus is the southside of Indianapolis. Melissa and I have been working in the entire greater Indianapolis metropolitan area but hope to hone in our services to Marion, Hamilton, Hancock, Boone, and other northern surrounding counties.”

The company’s motto is “Personal Real Estate Service, from Start to Finish.” “We want everyone we work with to become part of our Smith Family Realty family,” Paula says. “We’re not going to just stop communication once the deal is done. We continue that relationship throughout all aspects of our clients’ lives. And we hope that those who work with us feel like they

The company also includes David Lehenbauer.

The mother and daughter are eager to continue working together as a team at Smith Family Realty for years to come. “It’s been really fun working together,” Paula says. “We’re a really good team. We communicate with each other very well. I think we’re willing to say things to each

other that sometimes co-workers would feel uncomfortable saying, we always have each other’s back and are willing to help out whenever and wherever needed.” Melissa enjoys the team aspect of working with her mother, too. “It’s really nice knowing you have someone who is always on your side,” she says. “Mom knows I am always on her side and I know she’s on mine. It’s not always like that in all businesses. There can be a lot of competition. When working with my mother, we are certainly a dynamic duo and a force to be reckoned with.” Paula, Melissa and David look forward to further deepening their roots in Central Indiana, getting to know more clients in the years to come and growing their business to be one of the most recognizable and reliable real estate brokerage firms in the area.

THE WISPY PINE BOUTIQUE

INDEPENDENT CLOTHING SHOP OPENS SECOND LOCATION IN FISHERS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Kerch Creative

The Wispy Pine Boutique is a welcome addition to the Fishers small-business community. Located on South Street, the shop is near several other stores, has plenty of parking, and is filled with fashionable yet affordable women’s clothing.

lives in Fishers and I spend about half of my time here,” she says. “Fishers is a second home for me. Gas City really needed a boutique, so I began by opening a shop in my home. In 2019 I opened The Wispy Pine Boutique in Gas City, and a year later, in Fishers. Both of my shops are in old houses. I found the Fishers location when I was going to the nearby Starbucks.”

Owner Amanda Shields has always been interested in fashion. She was working as a dental hygienist and teaching in the dental hygiene clinic at Purdue University Fort Wayne when back issues made her rethink her career. She decided to put her master’s degree in business to good use by opening a clothing boutique.

When customers walk into The Wispy Pine Boutique, they find comfortable and casual everyday wear, with a few dressy items as well. The cozy, boho-chic styles come in sizes ranging from small to 3X. The store also carries outerwear pieces and lots of ontrend jewelry.

“I live in Gas City, but a lot of my family

“Anyone can come in and find something they like,” Shields says. “We have clothes 26 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MARCH 2021 / atFishers.com

for all ages, from 16-year-olds to a 90-yearold woman. One of our biggest sellers is KanCan jeans. They fit very well and the ladies love them. We carry skinny, relaxed fit, bell bottoms and other styles. At this time, there is nothing in the boutique that is over $50.” Customers can shop in-store or online via the boutique website. Shipping is free on orders over $50, and otherwise there is a flat $6 fee. Purchases can also be picked up locally. “When I was trying to come up with a name for the boutique, I wanted one that fit my personality,” Shields adds. “I love to hike and be outdoors. One night,

ARTISTIC PATH

THE ARTWORK OF HUGH SYME TO BE FEATURED AT THE ART GALLERY AT CITY HALL “My father would always engage with me about anything I drew,” Syme says. “He taught me that you can’t throw a pencil drawing together in an afternoon. It might take a week or six weeks to finish. I was always encouraged and instructed on the merits of discipline. The same was true of practicing the piano and everything else. I felt grateful for my mom and dad for being so inclined. I just had a natural passion for it.” Syme’s formal art training took place in Canada and England.

The Fishers Arts Council will showcase the artwork of legendary artist Hugh Syme during the month of March on the second level of The Art Gallery at City Hall. Syme, a Hoosier, is a painter, illustrator and graphic artist. The exhibit “Music Art of RUSH” will showcase 25 prints. Syme’s love of art and music started at a young age. “I started drawing at a young age,” Syme says. “Even though my father was passionate about his career as a mechanical engineer in the pulp and paper industry, he also took 10 years of violin. His sister, my aunt, was a world-renowned concert pianist. I was fortunate to grow up around people who were graphically and musically astute.” His father’s influence helped shape his work ethic in art.

“My father’s work took us to the Niagara Region and I attended New School of Art in Toronto,” Syme says. “Then we moved to England and I attended York University in York, England. We lived in England during the British Invasion. It was a great time to be alive.” Syme was hitchhiking in Toronto after returning from England when he found his first gig in the art world. “As luck would have it, I was picked up by the promoter for the Toronto Symphony,” Syme says. “He asked me in passing what I did for work and without missing a beat I said I was an artist. He questioned me a little further and asked what I would charge for five illustrations. I blurted out $500 each. It ended up being the first $2,500 I’ve ever made enjoying myself so much.” His working relationship with the band Rush also happened by luck. “I just happened to play in a band on the same label as Rush,” Syme says. “The management for our respective bands called me into the office and asked me if I’d like to do an album cover for them. I thought I’d give it a shot.”

Fast forward to today, and Syme has created artwork for more than 100 other artists. “L.A. always seemed to be a place where you could find the work if you wanted it,” Syme says. “I ended up living in New York for a few years in the ’80s. Again, I got very lucky. My father knew someone who made it feasible for me to live in a condo I wouldn’t have been able to afford. I got to be a pretend Manhattan native on my budget.” New York is where Syme met his former wife, an Indiana native. “She was modeling in New York when

we met,” Syme says. “We were married for 19 years and lived in New Castle, Indiana. We both still live in the town and are great friends. My three daughters live close by, too. I just love the pace and the affordability.” Syme’s work evolved into advertising campaigns for national brands such as Disney, Time Warner, Eli Lilly, Pfizer and Samuel Adams.

says. “I loved the lighting Ramirez used. It was insane. Then I discovered Dali. I was excited to see you could have what I have now dubbed my work to be as improbable reality.” Syme credits his father all those years ago for giving him some sage advice about his chosen path. “I remember my father once told me, ‘Don’t ever undervalue what you do,’” he says. “People perceive your work based on what you say about it. There is a certain degree to what art can become in a lifetime. You don’t have to die first to be valuable.”

“Doing an album cover and doing an advertising campaign isn’t all that different,” Syme says. “You’re still bringing the same skill set. Oddly enough, the pharmaceutical realm started growing into imagery that wasn’t just pills on a table, or a doctor. It was The Art Gallery at City Hall, located at 1 Municipal Drive in Fishers, is open much more creative.” Mon. through Fri. 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Syme’s artwork will be on display and Syme describes his art as representational, and takes inspiration from artists before him. also for sale. For more information, visit fishersartscouncil.org. “I always was challenged by Escher and people who painted what they see,” Syme
