HOMETOWN HEALTH CARE HEROES: SALUTING LOCAL HEALTH CARE WORKERS ON THE FRONTLINES FIGHTING COVID-19

We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a way that perhaps we never have been in our lifetime because we know the blood, sweat and tears that these men and women have shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept through our country, leaving confusion, uncertainly, and blind fear in its wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and other businesses shut down, those on the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, many put in overtime, both physically and mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow man.

SHOW MOM HOW MUCH YOU APPRECIATE HER THIS MOTHER’S DAY Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Mother’s Day will soon be upon us, and it’s time to start thinking about how to make your mom feel special on her day. Most moms in our lives deserve an award for all the amazing things they do, from cooking dinners to catching tears and giving the best hugs - but if you don’t have the time or money to erect a statue or create an award just for her, we’ve got your back with these easy and unique ways to show your appreciation.

BOUQUETS Ok, we know a floral bouquet is not so unique, but if you take this basic idea and run with it, there are many possibilities. Find something she loves or something that makes her smile, and pull it together in bouquet form. Maybe it’s cookies, balloons or even candy. Try something a little outside of the box by creating a vintage brooch bouquet and placing it in a handmade vase that she can look at all the time (both available on Etsy.com). Some of these ideas you can find at retailers around town, and others you atFishers.com / MAY 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 7

might have to create on your own. Either way, any unique take on a normal bouquet is sure to bring an ear-to-ear grin.

HANDWRITTEN LETTERS When was the last time you wrote your mom a handwritten letter? Maybe second grade? Well, the time has come to consider doing this again. Not only will she love hearing about all the things that are important to you that involve her, but this is also a surefire way to get an almost endless hug from her.

DONATIONS

PICTURE BOOKS

Chat your mom up a little to figure out which cause might be the best fit for a donation in her name. Was she a successful businesswoman? If so, Dress for Success might be a good fit. Was she a teacher? Consider Girls Inc. Wherever you donate in her name, it’s sure to touch her heart.

GET-TOGETHERS As we grow older, getting together with family gets harder. Many moms enjoy having the entire family around the dinner table, in the living room or on the back porch. Try to schedule a family brunch or lunch. If your family members are scattered across the country, schedule a time to gather on FaceTime for a bit to catch up with your mom, and laugh like families do when they are together.

It’s very easy these days to pull photos from social media and create magical photo memories. Shutterfly, Chatbooks and even Walgreens have easy-to-use platforms. The best part is that these last forever. Not only will your mom love looking at the photos while awaiting your next visit, but it will also allow her to relive meaningful moments over and over. Don’t be afraid to add in photos of drawings your kids made, or maybe something you made as a kid. Sprinkling in nods to the past really takes this to the next level.

might also try a city scavenger hunt or go geocaching. It might even be fun to rent your mom’s dream car and go on a road trip. Whatever crazy, fun activity you choose, make those memories and remind your mom that you love her very much.

DO SOMETHING CRAZY

Remember to get started on your ideas with enough time to make the next Mother’s Day No, this doesn’t mean do something that will get you in trouble. Simply do something a memorable one. Our mothers sacrifice many things for us so that we can grow and with your mom that’s perhaps outside prosper, so take the time to make them of your comfort zone, and just plain fun. feel special. Remember that mothers are a Sign up for a fun 5K race - there are tons blessing, and deserve to be showered with of 5K opportunities out there, and you can choose to walk or run in many of them. You amazing love all year long.

Michael Slate, founder of VendorJump, and John Wechsler, founder of Launch Fishers, have been at the forefront of the initiative.

As medical professionals all over the world have worked to combat the coronavirus and faced supply shortages in the process, several local individuals and organizations on Indy’s Northside have joined the fight by raising money to provide necessary face masks for local hospitals, first responders and senior care facilities. Back in March, Michael Slate, founder of Fishers-based e-commerce retailer VendorJump, launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for much-needed masks used by health care professionals dealing with the rising number of COVID-19 cases throughout area hospitals.

When John Wechsler, founder of coworking space Launch Fishers and a friend of Slate’s, heard about what Slate was doing, he immediately starting thinking about how he and other local residents could get involved. “In late March, my wife saw Michael’s Facebook post saying that he had started the GoFundMe to get some masks,” Wechsler says. “Michael is a member at Launch Fishers, and his sister-in-law is a nurse up at Riverview who got moved into the COVID unit there. She was telling him that they were basically being told to reuse the same mask all day, which is completely not protocol. So he wanted to start doing something about it.” MAY 2020

Wechsler and Slate reached out to Darryn Scheske at Heartland Church in Fishers regarding the prospect of collecting donations and ordering masks, and Scheske reached out to some fellow pastors. “Darryn Scheske at Heartland Church said that he’d been looking for ways to support frontline medical workers, and he committed the first check and sent out a text to local pastors,” Wechsler says. “The next thing you know it snowballed, and we quickly reached several hundred thousand dollars raised by the end of March.” The team began sourcing KN95 masks, a less expensive alternative to the traditional N95 masks that are currently in drastically short supply in hospital facilities throughout

The KN95 masks are being donated directly to Indianapolis-area hospitals, senior facilities and first responders. Donations can be made directly to Slate’s GoFundMePage which is linked at: Covidsupport.life.

the country. The masks and other protective equipment help to reduce the risk of exposure to viruses like the novel coronavirus that has spread worldwide since December. Many hospitals locally and throughout the country have exhausted their own supply of necessary masks and other protective supplies. Slate, Wechsler and their colleagues have purchased more than 200,000 KN95 masks, sourced directly from China-based factories. Slate’s own business is centered on direct importing from China, and his contacts with Chinese factories helped to facilitate supply needs.

“Michael has employees on the ground, and they have friends that run the factories so they can literally be there and order what we need,” Wechsler says, adding that all of the masks will be distributed to hospitals and senior care facilities from the Hamilton County Emergency Management logistics hub. Delivery times for the masks range from seven to 14 days from China depending on quantity and availability. “The rare component here is that we actually have the supply, but we need the money to buy it because you have to pay for everything up front,” Wechsler adds. “It surpasses our abilities individually to commit that kind of money, and that’s what has had us all together spreading the work. So it’s great to see a lot of people coming together and rallying around this urgent cause.”

Institutions interested in making a donation request or purchase inquiry for masks can complete and submit a form directly on the site home page. The site also includes a link to a detailed comparison of KN95 masks and traditional N95 masks, which are typically more expensive to manufacture, and the scarcity of which has led to shortages in manufacturing materials. “While it’s taken a massive effort by everyone involved to pull this off, I am extremely grateful to have an opportunity to help our health care and other front line workers in such a meaningful way,” Slate says. In addition to Heartland Church, several area organizations including Enigma Marketing and Travel Solutions, Traders Point Christian Church, Indiana Technology and Innovation Association, Heavenly Hearts Foundation and others have donated to the cause, as well as tech entrepreneurs and other individual donors. “It’s been a passion project for all of us,” Wechsler says. “It’s a ton of work sourcing this stuff. Every single donor and recipient wants to do their due diligence, so we’re spending unbelievable amounts of time. We all need to respond during this time of emergency and answer the call. We’re happy to try to make a difference.” For more details, frequently asked questions, direct contact info and a direct GoFundMe donation page link, visit Covidsupport.life. GoFundMe contributions are tax-deductible.

The RotoShovel is far from Goren’s first marketable creation. He’s been brainstorming and inventing products for decades now including the Qube, a cotton swab dispenser that made its way into Bed Bath & Beyond, and the Micro Vision Pro, which allows the user to move around freely using a laptop computer via a harnessed chassis. When he’s not tinkering, Goren stays busy as owner of Fishers-based Technology Interiors, which offers home audio and video installation as well as home automation products for lighting, security, HVAC monitoring and more. He founded Technology Interiors 22 years ago, and in 2017 the company was included in CE Pro Magazine’s top 100 custom home technology integration companies in the U.S. Goren says working with various engineers and entrepreneurs throughout his career has been the main inspiration for his continued interest in inventing his own products. “I think it was just the influence of all those individuals that I was around my whole life that inspired me to see things a little bit differently and look a little deeper into products that are already out there,” Goren says. Starting September 23, RotoShovel TV ads will appear on AMC networks and NewsWatch, and Goren recently launched the official product website as well. The product will also appear at the MAY 2020

Sahm’s Restaurant Group Owner Ed Sahm and Co-Owner Eddie Sahm have turned many of their restaurants into market places for the community.

NORTHSIDE EATERIES ADJUST, GIVE BACK DURING COVID-19 OUTBREAK Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided

As restaurants and retailers across the country and the world deal with the toll that the coronavirus is taking on their businesses, proprietors at a few northside Indy eateries have taken some creative measures to help out their staff, customers and the local community.

some of our restaurants into full grocery store marketplaces with curbside service. We figured this would be helpful for guests who don’t think grocery stores are the best outlet and are trying to limit their time out each week.”

Sahm’s Restaurant Group has been selling non-food staples such as cleaning supplies and toilet paper, in addition to food items, at Sahm’s Place at 65th Street and Keystone Since the virus prompted temporary dine-in Avenue, Half Liter BBQ in Broad Ripple, shutdowns for Indiana restaurants in March, Big Lug Canteen in Nora, Sahm’s Restaurant several establishments under the umbrella in Fishers, and Sahm’s Ale House in of Sahm’s Restaurant Group began offering Carmel’s Village of West Clay. hundreds of grocery items, in addition to carry-out food orders. Sahm says his company was initially forced “I think it’s been kind of a tumultuous time for everyone in the restaurant industry, and everyone has had to pivot to a slightly new model to keep themselves going,” says Eddie Sahm, director of operations with Sahm’s Restaurant Group. “For us, that was turning

to lay off approximately 80% of Sahm’s Restaurant Group employees but has been able to bring back nearly half of his staff.

“We have family meals available and smaller individual meals as well for sale,” adds Sahm, who operates Sahm’s Restaurant MAY 2020

Group alongside his father Ed. “For the marketplace, and especially the non-food stuff that we wouldn’t normally carry, the hardest part was figuring out inventories and how much money we could spend building up the right amount. We basically pivoted our entire business in about 72 hours.” On March 22, Sahm’s also launched a Second Helpings satellite kitchen in downtown Indy, which began feeding up to 30,000 adults and children in need weekly, according to Sahm. Wolfies Grill has also stepped up during the Coronavirus outbreak. The restaurant group partnered with Versiti Blood Center to host blood drives at its locations in Fishers, Noblesville and Indianapolis. The blood drives ran from March 21 through 22 and anyone who donated was able to receive 20% off any carryout order at Wolfies. The American Red Cross has addressed

blood shortages due to blood drive cancellations. That being said, Wolfies Grill owner Scott Wolf saw the opportunity to give back. “It’s time for our community to step up,” Wolf says. “With so many discouraging stories lately, I wanted our family, staff and our customers to have the opportunity to be a part of something bigger and make a difference for others in our community.” Tony Kwiatkowski, co-owner of Ale Emporium Fishers, says his eatery has been able to weather the storm of having to close to dine-in customers and even paid his entire Ale staff their full-time pay for the first two weeks of the closure — averaging his servers’ weekly tips to approximate their full-time pay amount — regardless of whether they worked hours at the restaurant. “It was our way of thanking our staff, and we thought it was the right thing to do,” Kwiatkowski says, adding that Ale Emporium’s ability to stay open and keep most of the staff employed stems from historically strong carry-out sales. “We’re kind of a close-knit family here. We also have offered all of our employees a daily meal for them and their family since March 17, if they choose to come in and get it.” Kwiatkowski says he’s been able to keep all of his cooks working close to 40 hours per week since midMarch, thanks to a steady stream of carry-out business. “Most of our hosts are high school kids, and with a lot of them it’s their first job as sophomores or juniors, so a lot of those kids opted not to work during this time,” he says. “And with servers, we’ve been able to keep them on for about 70 to 75% of their normal weekly work time to help with the decent amount of carry-out business.”

“It took us a few days to perfect it but I think we figured it out pretty good,” Kwiatkowski says. “We’ve tried to figure out how to make it the most efficient for our guests. My hope is that the other restaurants around Indianapolis have done OK with carryouts too since the closures.”

“I think people will be more aware, even after this current situation is over, about hygiene and washing hands,” he adds. “I think you might see more places trying to open patios, as more people might want to dine out in an open space instead of inside. It’ll be interesting to see if there are permanent, lasting changes or trends in how restaurants operate moving forward.” Sahm says the pandemic could have a permanent effect on both seating capacities in restaurants and the way food is priced. “I think dining experiences will change pretty significantly, but who’s to say for how long - it could be somewhat temporary,” he says. “It could change how restaurants staff too because overhead doesn’t change even if seating capacity has to. We’ll just have to roll with it.”

Staying Safe With Smart911 DIGITAL SERVICE PROVIDES EMERGENCY WORKERS WITH EXTRA INFORMATION ON 911 CALLS Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Smart911

With the global COVID-19 pandemic, communities around the world are working through ways to ensure the public safety of individuals and families. In Hamilton County, one way residents can better equip 9-1-1 and first responders with all the information they need is by creating a free account with the Smart911 national safety profile registry. “Participants can self-identify if they are under quarantine, and whether it is self-imposed or directed by a health professional,” says Jeff Schemmer, executive director of Hamilton County Public Safety Communications. “The Smart911 app also allows quarantined individuals to receive

check-in messages on their health status. Individuals who sign up will receive tailored alerts based on their specific needs and geographic location.” Individuals can create a Smart911 Safety Profile for their household at Smart911. com or on the Smart911 App. The signup process is quick and easy, while also giving first responders crucial information on you and your family that they may not otherwise have. “It acts as a database for the public to provide us information that we can utilize in emergency situations,” Schemmer says. “It can be something as simple as descriptions of their home, how many people live in their house or if they have any family members that have medical conditions.” MAY 2020

In many cases, Schemmer explains that an individual’s phone number may not even tell 9-1-1 responders where exactly they’re calling from. This is where Smart911 comes in handy. “80 to 85% of our 9-1-1 calls are cellular,” Schemmer says. “We have no way to pinpoint a phone, so what they can do is link their home address, or even work address, to their cellphone number.” In signing up for a Smart911 account, Hamilton County residents can also ensure they’re receiving any and all public safety announcements from county officials. “We just also added Rave Alert, which is part of the Smart911 suite,” Schemmer adds. “It allows us to push out notifications

to people. So if there are severe weather warnings, we can push that out. And since it’s done over a cellphone, the likelihood of us reaching people with an emergency notification is better than a tornado siren because people don’t necessarily hear those inside or at night.”

When it comes to what information individuals share with Smart911, Schemmer states it’s ultimately up to the individual. Hamilton County citizens can do as much as sharing a photo of their home, or as little as linking their cellphone number to their home address. Regardless, privacy is always ensured. “If you go into your profile, you can add additional notes, and that’s what we would see,” Schemmer says. “It gives us a lot of information we can use, and we only have access to it when you call.”

All in all, Schemmer hopes to continue getting the word out about this helpful public safety tool. “We’re gradually increasing [the number of sign-ups], but a lot of it is getting the word out and reminding people about it,” Schemmer says. “It will provide the first responders with more information to better serve the citizens of Hamilton County in an emergency.”

HOMETOWN Health Care Heroes Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Remember the days when the notion of shaking hands with a rock-n-roll star or rubbing elbows with an NBA player made your heart aflutter? Remember the way your children watched superhero movies with their eyes wide and their mouths agape as they sat, mesmerized, at the notion of being able to fly, deflect bullets and neutralize the bad guys? Remember the times you had a random encounter with an A-list Hollywood actress at an airport or a legendary musician while vacationing in an exotic location? We remember such encounters because we, as a society, have elevated Hollywood superstars, sports icons, music legends and fictitious comic book characters as heroes in our minds.

It wasn’t until this spring when an insidious, highly contagious disease swiftly and jarringly upended our routines, our lives, our families and our world that our definition of “hero” was sharply redefined. Suddenly we looked to doctors, nurses, hospital staff, first responders and emergency personnel with fresh eyes of gratitude and a renewed sense of awe as we recognized the grand and personal sacrifices they were making, daily, for the sake of their communities.

its wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and other businesses shut down, those on the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, many put in overtime, both physically and mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow man.

This strange and surreal experience has brought many lessons, the greatest of which is that we have heroes living among us. And for that, we are all eternally grateful. Therefore, we wanted to take We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a this opportunity to thank these beautiful way that perhaps we never have been in our people for their ceaseless sacrifice, lifetime because we know the blood, sweat unwavering commitment to serve and and tears that these men and women have boundless love of humankind. shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept through our country, leaving Donetta Gee-Weiler, RN, MBA-MSN, confusion, uncertainly, and blind fear in Hospital Administrator and Chief MAY 2020

Nursing Officer for Community Heart and Vascular Hospital has worked for Community Health Network for 25 years and says she’s always known it was a special place. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven that point as teamwork has taken on a new meaning. “Caregivers are moving from areas that are no longer open to help support areas of greater need,” she says. “This means learning new roles, moving to a new site of care and even changing shifts. During such a time of uncertainty, our team is adjusting to make sure we continue to deliver the best possible care to those in need.” Nevertheless, this is the field these men and women have chosen, and they feel driven to step up and care for humanity just as they always have. “I view the role of the caregiver as something that cannot be replaced,” says Gee-Weiler, noting that they are welcomed into their patients’ lives during the best moments (e.g., the birth of a baby, cure from disease) and worst moments (e.g., terminal diagnosis, loss of a loved one).

“I VIEW THE ROLE OF THE CAREGIVER AS SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE REPLACED.” - DONETTA GEE-WEILER -

“We are part of the family’s story as these memories are some they carry with them for the remainder of their life,” GeeWeiler adds. “Now I think the community is finally seeing just how much these moments also mean to us. We are showing that health care is truly a career of passion to help others, regardless of the need.” Dr. William Harvey, pulmonary critical care specialist and medical director of the intensive care unit (ICU) at IU Health North Hospital, has been practicing critical care medicine for two decades. As medical director of the ICU, he provides calm reassurance to the nursing staff and communicates with administration to ask for and receive the necessary resources to treat patients. “Although there is more stress and longer hours than usual, I feel very blessed that I have been trained to do this job and that I have an opportunity to help the citizens of Hamilton County,” says Dr. Harvey, MAY 2020

who is thankful to the Hamilton County residents for their sacrifices. “We will get through this time. It will not last forever. Fortunately, at IU Health we have the resources, the manpower and the will to respond to this crisis and ultimately defeat the virus.” Just as the community appreciates our hometown heroes, they, too, appreciate the love and support they have received in return. “We have seen the community show up in so many ways by sending loving messages via social media, donating meals to feed our busy teams and planning large driveby parades to show support,” Gee-Weiler says. “This is such a difficult time in health care, but it will pass. In the end, my hope is that the community continues to remember how important the caregivers are and that we keep an even stronger bond we have built with one another.”

I FEEL VERY BLESSED THAT I HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO DO THIS JOB AND THAT I HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP THE CITIZENS OF HAMILTON COUNTY. - DR. WILLIAM HARVEY -

When every day brings a new series of harrowing headlines, it can be easy to slip into sadness or flounder in fear. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to this army of men and women as they are the heartbeat of hope that now, always has, and always will work tirelessly to relieve pain, save lives and restore health. These individuals dedicate their lives to helping us, as a society, live our best lives. Because, as the saying goes, “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.” Thank you to all our local health care heroes for what you do each day!

Whether you are a small business owner, a health care worker, have school-aged children, or simply have had to adjust your lifestyle, we have all had to endure change. In my open letter to the community I released in April, I wrote about how fear and anger are natural emotions for the times in which we find ourselves. That sentiment can certainly continue to ring true. But what I hope you took away from the letter is that our community can do better. We can take these emotions and turn them into action. You answered that call. Whether you checked in on your neighbors, donated to health care workers or drew positive messages in sidewalk chalk on your property, many of you took that challenge to heart. Those stories fill the pages of this magazine. In times like these, we are often presented with the true character of those around us. IGNITE.TRANSFORM LOCAL NONPROFIT HELPS WOMEN ACHIEVE PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL WELLNESS Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Growing up in an abusive household, Mary Beth Woehrle fell into addiction and experienced many rough years as a teen and young adult. At age 25, she began seeing a counselor. At 26, she started an AA program to get sober. She also had bariatric surgery and hit the gym in order to improve her physical fitness. As she worked out and shed weight, however, suddenly a wave of unexpected emotions began rising to the surface. “I found myself in tears because I couldn’t contain what was happening emotionally,” says Woehrle, who had a revelation. “I thought, ‘This is why so many people fail at bariatric procedures. They start losing their buffer and the past trauma issues that so many obese people have bottled up come rushing back. As a result, they go back to what’s comfortable in order to avoid dealing with the emotion.’”

Though Woehrle worked hard to become physically and emotionally healthy, she admits to being late to the party in recognizing that she needed to improve her spiritual health. For years, Woehrle worked as an optometrist. Though her career was fulfilling, she felt a tugging at her heart to help women who were experiencing some of the same struggles she had in her youth. In 2017 she launched the registered nonprofit IGNITE.TRANSFORM, a mental health program that blends spiritual and physical wellness in order to empower women to become stronger in mind, body and spirit. “This is a mental health program that uses counseling and physical wellness as a tool, but also uses the love of Christ to transform lives,” says Woehrle, noting that the multidimensional program utilizes various professionals all working together to create powerful healing. atFishers.com / MAY 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 33

“As far as I know, our mission is unlike any other in our community,” Woehrle says. “No other program is doing mental health as we are.” According to Woehrle, many of the program participants have experienced significant abuse, trauma, addiction or depression in their past, leading to social isolation. All of these issues can keep women from living their best lives. “Everybody has a story, and every story matters to God,” Woehrle says. “If we would spend more time listening to other people’s stories and sharing our own, we would have much less division in our world.”

Woehrle describes the one-year program as a deep dive, not a superficial fix. “You have to be willing to spend the time to receive the services fully, as it’s not offered à la carte,” says Woehrle, who sits down with each potential client during an initial meeting to determine if they are a good match for the program.

Every week participants meet with a mental health specialist, and work with a certified nutritionist to teach them healthy eating habits. Finally, there is the spiritual growth aspect. “We are deeply committed to the fact that this program works because God works in their lives,” says Woehrle, adding that any denomination or faith is welcome.

The program includes a Christian component with Christian music played in the gym, but participation in bible studies is not mandatory. “We try to meet people where they are, and to talk further in their faith to whatever degree they want to walk,” Woehrle says. Though the program is scheduled to last one year, each individual’s timeline can vary due to specific circumstances. For example, during the first six weeks of starting at IGNITE.TRANSFORM,

one woman grieved the loss of three important people in her life. “She was shut down for a bit so it ended up taking her 16 months to finish instead of 12,” Woehrle says. “I tell the ladies on the first day that this is not going to be a straight-line path. It’s more like Chutes and Ladders.” Woehrle is grateful to have the opportunity to change women’s lives for the better. Time and again she has witnessed complete transformations. “When they first come in, they have no hope,” Woehrle says. “Over time, that flicker of hope emerges.” Woehrle recalls the time she received an application from a woman who sought out IGNITE. TRANSFORM after losing her sight, and who was beginning to feel lost. As a former optometrist, Woehrle couldn’t help feeling that this woman was God-sent. “This is why we do what we do,” Woehrle says. “Everyone has a purpose in life, and when you find it and live it, there’s nothing that feels more fulfilling.” May is U.S. Mental Health Awareness month. If you would like to donate to IGNITE.TRANSFORM or learn more about the program, visit ignitetransform.org and call 317567-9667.

COTTINGHAM CONCRETE 201 E. Griffith St. Galveston, IN 765-437-2977 CottinghamConcrete.com

Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Jim Hunt

In the concrete realm, Cottingham can tackle just about any project.

Founded in 2014, Cottingham Concrete services a wide range of concrete needs including decorative and stained concrete, outdoor living areas and more. In addition to concrete work, the company can also handle projects like facility maintenance, snow removal, site cleanup and more making the business a one-stop shop for contracting needs.

“I can do anything with concrete,” Cottingham says. “On the decorative end, it’s open to anything.”

Originally from Kokomo, Owner Brad Cottingham is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to home maintenance. Nevertheless, he ultimately considers himself a concrete guy. “I’m just kind of a handyman all around, but concrete is my passion,” he says. “That’s where my heart is. I just love doing it.”

At the moment, Cottingham says he’s been busy with concrete overlays, which can have a range of benefits. “For the customer, it saves on the charge for coming in and tearing up the yard - I don’t have to do that,” Cottingham says. “It also saves on the charge of hauling away all the existing concrete that I’ve busted out.” When it comes to the locations he services, Cottingham says he tends to stay within a 60mile radius of his Galveston headquarters. “I’ve been to Geist, Wabash, Marion and even two hours north, almost to Goshen,” he says. “It all depends on the job.” With every project, Cottingham Concrete takes pride in using the best products while ensuring every customer is satisfied. “I’m pretty straightforward,” Cottingham says. “What I say is what I say, and if I tell you I’ll do it, then I’ll do it.” atFishers.com / MAY 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 37

Cottingham himself is always ready to get his hands dirty throughout the various jobs his company undertakes. “You’re not going to see me pull up in my truck and point fingers to my guys,” he says. “I’m going to be on your project. That’s a big difference between us and your bigger companies.”

PARENTING DURING COVID-19

6 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR PARENTS AT HOME WITH KIDDOS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Most of us are finding an unlimited amount of time on our hands during these fairly uncertain times. While it can be a stressful time for many of us, especially parents, we will all get through it and have memories to last a lifetime. Let’s hope that these few survival tips can cut down on stress and also bring a few more smiles into your life while we all stay safe at home.

1. DISNEY+ If you don’t have it, sign up now. It’s super affordable and gives you access to the entire Disney movie library, which you are going to need because the days are very, very long and screen time rules flew out the window weeks ago. Old movies are fun to share with your kids so maybe try to get them to sit down and watch Swiss Family Robinson (a personal fave yet I still can’t get my child to watch the whole thing) or hunker down and watch all the Star Wars one after another or have a Marvel movie marathon.

share with your neighbors by leaving a piece on their doorstep and ask them to get in on the fun too!

3. PARTICIPATE IN A CHALLENGE There are lots of social media and viral challenges out there and while I’m not a huge tech fan, the social aspect of it has given way to some really creative things happening. Maybe do a lip sync challenge video with your entire family, try the garage door challenge (if you are needing a drink and a great laugh), or participate in the plank or push up challenge. You can even come up with your own challenge if you are really feeling creative! Whatever you choose, make sure to nominate another family to try it after you do!

4. ONE-ON-ONE TIME

With us all having quite a few extra moments hanging at our homes these days, we are typically all up in each other’s business. But now is the time to make sure to carve out a little one-on-one time with your loved ones if you can. About 15 minutes here and there can go a long way. 2. CHALK Spend it snuggling in the morning before Time to start hoarding sidewalk chalk. As rolling out of bed if you have early risers, the weather begins to show more signs of playing a video game, or going on a walk. It’s spring, more people will be out walking also important to keep in mind that as adults soon and with limited paths available during you might need to find some alone time too. this time, why not sass up the walkways It feels like there are really no breaks during with some art. The best thing about chalk this crazy time, so no judgment if that is though is that it can go so many different time spent hiding in the bathroom. directions…get creative! Draw up inspiring messages, create something giant that takes 5. TALENT SHOWS over entire driveways or cul-de-sacs, make up extra-large game boards, or even create We all have hidden talents, like knowing art galleries! The possibilities are endless the entire rap portion of TLC’s Waterfalls and remember, adults can have fun with song or spinning a basketball on our finger chalk too. And, if you have a ton of chalk, for way longer than normal. Whatever your 38 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atFishers.com

hidden talent, it’s time to let that cat out of the bag and show off your skills! Gather your immediate family and each share your talents one by one in the living room or make it a family challenge and invite other families and friends to participate in a virtual event! By utilizing the amazing social tools out there like FaceTime or Zoom, the possibilities are endless!

6. WINE DELIVERY You are gonna need it. Pick a local winery and you will probably be happily surprised to find out they are delivering during this time! While I don’t encourage drinking in excess, the days can be really quite emotionally draining and a cocktail hour once a week (or every day - you choose) isn’t going to hurt anyone! There are also quite a few Mexican restaurants selling their non-alcoholic margarita mix on their takeout menus now too. Who doesn’t need a Margarita Monday (or Tuesday & Wednesday too)? It’s ok, we get it. After this, we’ll all be drinking Ina Garten style, and if you don’t know what this is referring to, Google it. Remember, this is a special time we’ve been given to slow down and reconnect. Make sure to take it all in. Stay in bed a little longer, try to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish or try a new recipe you’ve been meaning to make. Whatever you do, make sure to check in on friends and family, especially those who are stuck home during this time alone. Some of you were maybe meant for these moments, but for others, this is a real challenge. Thankfully, we are able to still stay connected with technology. Whatever you do to get through this time staying safe at home, cherish it. Remember this too shall pass.
