each day to take pride in what we do, so we can stand out.”
Paul Arechiga, co-owner/operator of the new Verde, Flavors of Mexico, 1111 W. Main Street, Carmel, goes the extra mile to make sure his guests have the freshest ingredients when they dine at his restaurant.
Manager Hugo Sanchez says the trip to Mexico to research different types of Mexican cuisine was well worth it.
Arechiga also co-owns the highly successful Verde, Flavors of Mexico, in Fishers at 11680 Commercial Drive. The restaurant, originally opened as Friacos, but Arechiga wanted to rebrand both his Fishers restaurant and his new Carmel location.
“In order for us to be the best Mexican restaurant in the state, we needed to start Arechiga and members of his Verde staff from scratch,” Sanchez says. “We went to went to Mexico last year to look for different Mexico for a few weeks, spent some time in kinds of authentic meats and food items. small towns enjoying different types of food and bring them back to Indiana.” “The word ‘Verde’ means green, which means that everything is fresh,” Arechiga Sanchez says he and the Verde staff love says. “We only choose the best local going out of their way for their customers. products, and that is what our guests love. “We wanted to really focus on the amount of time and energy we put into making sure everyone enjoys their meals, and the rebranding with the emphasis on freshness was a big part of that,” Arechiga says. “We are still a family-owned restaurant, and people have told us they like that. We have loved the positive response we have received from both the Carmel and Fishers communities. The restaurants have been a dream come true for me.”
Arechiga, who originally hails from Jalisco, Mexico, has been with the Fishers Verde for seven years. He and his wife, Deborah, and their daughter, Paulina, live in Fishers. He enjoys working at both restaurants. He says his staff also enjoys the positive reception from guests. “We are beyond delighted to now be part of the Carmel community too,” Sanchez says. “Our new restaurant features two dining rooms, a private room and a fresh upscale atmosphere. We cannot wait to have warm weather for guests to enjoy our patio. We also want people to come and join us for a fresh hand-shaken Margarita or for our well- known Mexican street tacos.” Verde customers at the new Carmel location should also check out the handmade water fountain and unique glassware, while they enjoy Spanish music, comfortable handmade furniture and the exquisite horse sculptures above the bar. Sanchez noted that the restaurant tables are hand-carved and were imported from Mexico. Verde has also partnered with Patron Spirits, to make a special blend of reposado tequila, specially for the restaurant. “It is the base of our ‘Verde select Barrell Margarita,” Sanchez says. Executive Chef Luis Aguilar says popular lunch specials include the Lunch Fajitas with a choice of steak or chicken, with sautéed onions and bell peppers. They are served which refuted beans, Mexican rice, lettuce, sour cream, tomato, guacamole, pico de gallo and a choice of corn or flour tortillas. Other selections include fajitas, chimichangas, burritos, etc. The lunch and dinner selections are numerous. “We have 102 unique meals to choose from,” Aguilar says. “The Molcajete Mar y Tierra is very popular.” It has marinated steak, shrimp,

Arechiga agrees. “We will go as far as Kokomo and Bloomington. We will even go to Ohio,” he says. “We are very popular for corporate lunches, weddings from 20 to 550 guests, private parties, special events and more. From the outside, Hoosier Pediatric Dental Group’s Fishers office on Olio Road looks like any other office space, but one look inside and you will immediately be convinced otherwise. The bright and colorful playhouse campground theme includes life-size games and game systems, the décor that will help preoccupy small children will associate their dental visits with a fun, positive environment.
That is exactly what owner and Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Ajay Joshi had in mind — to put his young patients at ease in a fun, kid-friendly environment. The practice offers normal preventative care, restorative care, oral surgery, sedation and hospital dentistry, but it is how these services are provided that make all the difference in the experience. With the opening of the practice at the end of March, the response to Hoosier Pediatric has been positive. Because of 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atFishers.com
the unique environment and Dr. Joshi’s dedication to treating his young patients with compassion, children that once were fearful not only enjoy their visits, they want to come back. “Good oral health for a lifetime is established when children are young,” Dr. Joshi says. “Because one bad experience can literally alter the future of children’s dental health.” Born and raised in Marion, Indiana, Dr. Joshi was influenced by watching his father,
who worked in the medical field, as he served his community. He observed the relationship he had with his patients and knew at a young age that he would one day work in healthcare. Dr. Joshi also has a sister with Down Syndrome, which he says played a role in becoming passionate about pediatric care. “Pediatric Dentistry is not my job, it is my calling,” he says. “You could even say it is my hobby because that is how much I love what I do.” He vividly remembers watching his mother travel out of their community just to find organizations that would provide medical care because no one offered patient care for children or adults with special needs. He is exceptionally patient and aware of the impact that healthcare providers can have on children with special needs. As a result, he participates in many outreach programs. This even had an impact on where he chose to continue his studies in pediatric dentistry. He attended Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he not only got his Master's Degree in Pediatric Dentistry but spent extensive time at Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital and learned from some of the best pediatric healthcare professionals in the world. A resident of Fishers, Dr. Joshi is currently an adjunct faculty and an assistant clinical professor in the Pediatric Dentistry department at Indiana University School of Dentistry as well. Dr. Joshi has gone to great lengths to create a fun and inviting environment for his patients. There is a life-size light bright on the wall, television with kids programming, gaming and a gumball machine that dispenses toys for free to reward a good visit. Hoosier Pediatric Dental Group is located at 11876 Olio Road in front of Kroger. businesses that I frequent,” Mucha says. “It’s an honor to serve the people here.”
When Detective Dean Mucha of the Fishers Police Department needs inspiration to continue the work he does day in and day out, he simply looks around at the town he calls home.
Born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Mucha spent a brief stint in Baltimore before relocating to the Hoosier state to pursue a psychology degree at Anderson University. Initially intending to start a career in psychological research after graduating, he soon found himself drawn to law enforcement and took a job with the

Fishers Police Department, spending his first 10 years in the Patrol Division where he served as a field training officer, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) officer and evidence technician. “Every young kid wants to grow up being the good guy, and I think that stuck with me when it was time to move into my career,” Mucha recalls.
After a decade with patrol, Mucha was chosen to join the department’s Investigations Division and has since specialized in fraud cases and become passionate about fraud prevention and detection. Last year, he organized and spoke at eight fraud seminars for businesses, churches and retirement homes as well as the general public. Mucha says rapidly evolving technology presents perhaps his biggest challenge from a fraud specialist perspective - from email phishing scams to credit card fraud and identity theft. He recently tackled credit card skimming, whereby credit cards used at gas station pumps are harvested for personal information via devices known as skimmers that are inserted inside credit card machines right there at the gas pump. “With the way technology evolves so quickly it’s hard to keep up with the criminal aspects of how criminals are perpetrating crimes,” he says. “Once we catch up to a new technology and are working with it, they’ve already gone on to the next one. It goes in waves - the credit card skimmers will be big for a while and then go away, and then it’ll come back around.” Back in 2013 Mucha began a partnership with the City of Fishers Department of Public Works (DPW) for the Fleet Watch Program, through which drivers of Public Works vehicles receive training and are in direct communication with law enforcement. Registered Public Works vehicles are given a distinctive Fleet Watch logo so residents can report crime or suspicious activity to the police via the DPW, and last year the program was expanded to include building inspector vehicles. Eager to help the Fishers community in a variety of capacities, last July Mucha organized Pack the Cruiser, a food drive event benefitting the Hamilton Southeastern Summer Lunch Program, which launched last year with help from the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank. His objective for the event was to fill three police vehicles with donated food, and he struck up a partnership with Kroger to help promote and host the drive. atFishers.com / JUNE 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11
“What motivates me is to keep ever yone safe and make Fishers a great place for their families to live and enjoy ever ything that the city gives them."
At the end of the four-hour event Mucha, along with a group of fellow officers and volunteers, found themselves with 11 vehicles filled with food donated from residents in and around Fishers, as well as gift cards and a $4,500 total donation from Kroger. “In my hometown up in Green Bay they did a food drive like that in every jurisdiction up there, and I thought why not do something like that down here,” Mucha says. “Fortunately it went well the first time around.” On June 2 Mucha will head up the second annual Pack the Cruiser event, and he’s expanding it considerably to include every law enforcement agency throughout Hamilton County. Fifteen years into his law enforcement career, Mucha says the city of Fishers and its residents continue to provide him with all the professional motivation he needs to do the best he can serving the city he’s passionate about. That passion led to a special distinction in February when Mucha received the 2017 Chief ’s Award for outstanding service and community involvement. “I was very humbled and honored to receive the Chief’s Award, and didn’t expect it,” he says. “What motivates me is to keep everyone safe and make Fishers a great place for their families to live and enjoy everything that the city gives them. I want this to be a safe place for everyone to come and visit, work, live and play.” 12 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atFishers.com

The idea really began long before that lecture at IU. Partlow remembers how his grandparents farmed their own vegetables, and he realized how much food was wasted in industrial farming. Lettuce simply shipped from the West coast will use dozens of gallons of water and are caked with chemicals and preservatives. To Partlow, there had to be a better way.
simply cut and watch the vegetable or fruit grow back.
Over the years, Jonathan developed and patented a hydroponic system that grows plants not in soil but in water. No expensive lighting techniques, chemicals, planters, or watering systems needed. Within each box grows an individual plant, and there is no competing root system from other plants 14 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atFishers.com
so very little water is needed. The plants he tested in his nutrient-rich water weren’t genetically modified and they thrived on water straight from the tap. His house was full of growing plants - from lettuce and kale to bok choy and carrots. Eventually, Partlow set up shop in Launch Fishers. After developing the prototype, he and his team were ready for a beta test. In each Aggressively Organic box was planted seeds and nutrient-filled water. Growers need just water the box, keep it close to light, and watch it grow. Partlow was amazed to hear that some customers are still reaping the bounty of just one head of lettuce - months after the shipment. “Imagine having a three month supply of baby greens growing on your countertop, ripe for a salad?” says Partlow, who notes

that many places around the world have a food deficit due to poor soil. He hopes that Aggressively Organic could ship its system across the world to places like the Virgin Islands, which imports more than 90 percent of its food. Aggressively Organic will soon be taking more orders for its boxes. Partlow anticipates selling plants in packs, some pre-grown and some ready to be planted. He hopes to begin an exchange program allowing for people to use their lettuce or kale until the plant’s supply dwindles and then exchange the old box for a new, fresh plant. Partlow is also working to provide a low cost, LED light that will cover all the plants in a pack. Each pack of plants will come with special directions for watering and lighting. Partlow is especially proud of the educational work of Aggressively Organic. He looks to further educate the community with work in local schools. Partlow provides the plants and is often a guest speaker in some local classrooms. Recently, Brooks School Elementary students were able to watch tomato plants grow while learning math concepts of measurement and arithmetic and science concepts of photosynthesis and watering. In the future, Partlow hopes to become a part of the Internet of Things: each box might be wifi enabled, sending messages to people’s phones with special instructions or alerts. Each box might feature QR codes that unlock virtual educational lessons and activities for a family to learn and enjoy together. “We want to end food insecurity in my lifetime,” Partlow says. “So many people don’t know they can grow their own organic food. And they haven’t been given a way to do so until now.” Through their unique system, Aggressively Organic aims to give food security back to, as its website says, We the People. How LearningRx Transformed a Young Girl’s Self Image At nine years old, Callie Pinkley was already feeling defeated in school. “Callie had been struggling with reading, comprehension, spelling, memory and processing information,” says her mother Kendra. “She had been receiving tutoring from her teacher, but it wasn’t making an impact. At home, it was always a fight. Fighting to get her to read, to do homework, fighting because she couldn’t remember a word she read two sentences earlier. She hated reading and would often say, ‘I’m stupid.’ She continually struggled despite interventions which never worked. Due to low reading skills, her teacher was suggesting that Callie repeat the second grade. Callie was not on track to pass the IRead and IStep testing. I didn’t know what to do. Then I heard the LearningRx commercial, and it was speaking directly to us, offering hope for Callie’s struggle.”

Callie’s action plan was a six-month oneon-one cognitive brain training program at LearningRx. The transformation became obvious by all, including Callie’s teacher, Sarah Miller, who came to Callie’s program graduation. Callie’s amazing improvements include improved grades (now on honor roll), advancing three reading levels, greatly improved comprehension, better focus and attention, higher self-confidence and her greatest accomplishment this year — easily passing the IRead test.
Callie graduated from her program several months ago and Kendra is continually amazed at how well Callie is doing and still improving. “We are truly grateful for LearningRx for the permanent changes in our daughter and would highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling in school, home or life skills,” Kendra adds. It’s time to find out why your student continues to struggle despite teaching and tutoring. Find a solution that lasts a lifetime. Brain Training is Life Changing!
Licensed LearningRx staff tested Callie to pinpoint the exact cause of Callie’s learning struggles.

F I S H E R S Y O U T H A S S I S TA N C E P R O G R A M H E L P S F E E D KIDS IN NEED THROUGH SUMMER MEALS PRO GRAM Writer / Josh Brown Photography provided by Brian Brosmer & FYAP
More kids than you might think go hungry each summer in Fishers, but one organization is changing that. The Fishers Youth Assistance Program (FYAP) started in 2014 and has been supporting local families and youth through programs like family education, tutoring, mentoring, camps and more. More than 11 percent of kids in the Hamilton Southeastern School District are on free or reduced lunch. Last year, a group involved with local food banks, churches and the school system began brainstorming how to provide food to those kids in the summer that were in need with school out.
The Summer Meals Program was born and quickly became a program offered by the FYAP. “That almost 12 percent does not sound like a lot, but that is still 3,400 kids in the HSE School District,” says Lynda Carlino, FYAP Board Member and head of this year’s Summer Meals Program. “Once May hits and school is out, those kids get nothing. That group, last year, thought, ‘Well that is really scary. What happens to these kids during the summer?’” There was clearly a need. Last year, the first Summer Meals Program served breakfast and lunch to about 165 students, which comes out to 12,000 meals served. After the success and turnout for the first program, JUNE 2018 / FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE
Carlino and the FYAP has its sights set on an even higher goal this summer. The group is aiming to serve about 36,000 meals to 400 students in the 9-week program beginning June 4-July 23. So, how does the Summer Meals Program work and how can you help? Each week the FYAP committee for the Summer Meals Program gets together and puts orders in for ingredients and food. They work closely with the HSE Schools dietician, who comes up with a menu for the children. “The dietician puts together a menu of things that the kids can make themselves,” Carlino says. “Things like macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, spaghetti, cereal and more. For each child each week we put
together a bag for the week of groceries that they need to go along with that menu.” Aside from monetary donations, which are always welcome and appreciated, Carlino says a critical need for the Summer Meals Program is simply volunteers. Volunteers are needed throughout the summer to pack all the meal bags for the children and to meet on Mondays to deliver the bags to the kids and their families. This year, the FYAP will be distributing the Summer Meals bags every Monday at Fishers Junior High School between 1:307:30 p.m. and parents who have signed up for the program will be able to come during that time to get food for their kids. “People want to help, which is great,” Carlino says. “We will need about 40 people each Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. to get things set up all the way to shifts of people from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. when we will be handing out the bags.” Carlino, who recently retired as the Executive Director of the Southeastern Program of Recreational Team Sports (S.P.O.R.T.S.), was approached by Fishers Deputy Mayor Leah McGrath about joining the FYAP board and helping out with the Summer Meals Program. Despite being barley a month into her retirement, Carlino says the opportunity to serve and help others through the program was too enticing.

“It is a lot of work, but it is a really amazing program for the community,” Carlino says. The community response to the Summer Meals Program has already been overwhelming as local businesses and parents have jumped in to help out. “Most people, when I talk to them about this program, are shocked and surprised,” Carlino says. “No one stops to think that in a community like Fishers there are still some people who are struggling. The second response from people is, ‘How can I help?’” Serving 36,000 meals sounds like a daunting task, and, according to Carlino, the costs for each meal comes out to $1.85 or $66,600 FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018
total. It is a big number, but through the help of donations from local businesses and those in the community, Carlino says it is a reachable goal. One event that is an extension of the FYAP is Pack the Cruiser, which comes up June 2 at all Kroger stores in Hamilton County. Those who come out to the event are given a grocery list of needs for the Summer Meals Program and are asked to make donations for those items. Fishers Police Department cruisers are then literally packed full with the groceries and those donations go back into the Summer Meals Program. Last year, the first Pack the Cruiser event filled nine cruisers up. “Much of that $66,000 goal we are hoping to get donated through events like Pack the Cruiser,” Carlino says. “Even families just asking us how they can help. J.L. HUPP JEWELERS CLOSING DOORS AFTER 41 YEARS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Ron Wise
After more than 40 years in business, J.L. Hupp Jewelers, Fishers, will be closing its doors later this summer. The store, which is independently owned and operated by Jerry and Lynn Hupp, has a lot of loyal customers. Lynn says that she and Jerry felt the time was right to close the store. “It’s going to be very difficult, but also, it is exciting to know that we will be able to
take some vacations and travel and spend more time with family and friends,” Lynn says. “Anyone who has owned their own business, especially retail, knows that you are on the job 24/7, whether you are working or at home.” Hupp Jewelers will be open until August 31, with many great items on sale. “Because we do not have anyone to buy or take over the business, virtually everything will be on sale,” Lynn says. “Jewelry, watches and clocks as well as all our jewelry cases, equipment and office furniture.” FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018
Jerry and Lynn are looking forward to talking to many of their loyal customers over the next couple of months. “The memories are endless,” Lynn says. “We have built our business relationships with our customers. We have customers that have been coming to us since we opened our doors 41 years ago. We have watched our customers come in with their children, and now those children are adults who are coming in with their children. J.L. Hupp Jewelers started out in the Galleria at Glendale Shopping Center in 1977.
“We were in that location until 1992,” Lynn says. “We really liked it at Glendale and were able to meet a lot of great customers. We opened our doors in this Fishers location in June of 1991, and it was a good move.” The Hupps are members of the Retail Jewelers Organization, which is strictly for the small independent jeweler, as well as Jewelers of America and the Indiana Jewelers Association of which they have been board members for several years.
“We will be starting our celebration of retirement on June 9,” Lynn says. “We invite everyone to stop in and say goodbye over the next two to three months and take advantage of some great bargains. Make plans to buy some of your Christmas gifts early this year at great savings to you. We will continue to serve our customers until we close the doors.
“Larger stores won't repair or service jewelry or watches that weren't purchased there,” Jerry says. “We have been able to survive because we have always based our business on service and taking care of all the needs of our customers when it concerns jewelry.” An item doesn't need to be purchased at Hupp Jewelers for store employees to repair or service the item. “Our motto has always been, ‘If it is important to you, it is important to us,’” Lynn says. “So no matter the monetary value, we will do our best to serve our customers. We have continued to design and create custom Jewelry as well. And we have the largest selection of Estate Jewelry in the area.” Jerry says he and Lynn are looking forward to enjoying their free time and being free from the day-to-day operation. “We will travel, enjoy our many hobbies and continue to enjoy our Church and organizations for which we volunteer,” Lynn says. In the meantime, the Hupps want to say goodbye to all of their loyal customers and friends and thank them for their support and friendship all these years. JUNE 2018 / FISHERS & GEIST MAGAZINE
We are going to miss our customers, and I am sure it will be a very sad day when we lock the doors for the very last time.” J.L. Hupp Jewelers is located at 7808 E. 96th Street. You can give them a call at 317-845-0777 or visit them online at jlhuppjewelers.com.
FROM START TO FINISH GEIST HALF MARATHON, FISHERS YMCA PARTNER UP FOR INAUGURAL SPARK!FISHERS 5K Writer / Josh Brown . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
f you haven’t heard by now, Spark!Fishers is coming, and it’s sure to be a jam-packed event. The inaugural Fourth of July celebration will not lack in entertainment with everything from a national concert at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, street fair, community parade, fireworks and more. For those looking to get their feet moving, the Spark!Fishers 5K will be right up your alley. The 5K will be organized by a dynamic duo partnership in its first year — the Geist Half Marathon and the Fishers YMCA. It’s a partnership that has both organizations excited to join together for the inaugural race. “When we started discussing this partnership possibility, it really made a lot of sense,” says Geist Half Marathon President Mike Napariu. “The YMCA does a race in the fall, and we do our event in the spring. The Spark!Fishers 5K is right in between, so it made a lot of sense to try and work together as opposed to compete.” “The relationship with us that was already preexisting laid the groundwork for this,” adds Fishers YMCA Executive Director Jake Reardon-McSoley. “We’ve always enjoyed helping promote the Geist Half here in our community. We had discussions early on about how we could come together and join forces for this event. It’s a perfect partnership for us.”
honor the past, present and future of Fishers with the start/finish line in the heart of the Nickel Plate District in front of the Liberty Plaza statue on Municipal Dr. Runners and walkers will complete a course that flows counterclockwise from 116th Street to Lantern Road, then west on 126th Street, back through Roy G. Holland Memorial Park to conclude at the start/finish line on 116th Street in front of Liberty Plaza.
The 5K race will kick-off a full-day of Spark!Fishers events and festivities on June 30 and will begin at 8:00 a.m. The course is sure to be exciting for runners and bring another premier race to Fishers each year.
“This is a unique opportunity for runners,” Reardon-McSoley says. “They will be able to run right down the middle of 116th Street, which has never been done before. It will be a really nice way to showcase some of the immediate downtown areas of our thriving community. We will get to show off one of our marquee parks over at Holland Park, which is a great way to honor the past. There has been an intentional effort to pay some respects to our roots, to the past and all the good work that has gotten us to where we are — moving into a new, innovative future.”
The Spark!Fishers 5K race course will

people another option for the year,” Napariu adds. “Runners don’t like to run just one race a year. This race will really showcase the city of Fishers and what it is becoming — a place where people want to be.” The Geist Half Marathon and Fishers YMCA are 50/50 partners for the Spark!Fishers 5K event, which means the proceeds from the race will go back into the mission of each organization in promoting health and fitness throughout the community equally. The partnership also means the two organizations will split the duties of the race. The Geist Half Marathon hosts its 13.1 mile, 10K and 5K race on the third Saturday of May each year, while the Fishers YMCA hosts its Wishbone 5K race on Thanksgiving morning every year. So, both organizations have plenty of experience and a solid track record on how to organize successful race events. That experience will be crucial to the success of the inaugural Spark!Fishers 5K event. “The Fishers YMCA will handle most of the logistics and running the course, which they’ve done in the past,” Napariu says. “The Geist Half Marathon will take care of a lot of the marketing and promotion of the event. With the experience that we have, we don’t think it is an event that is going to tax either of us too much splitting the duties. We are looking forward to a great event.” “There are probably more people than we’d
like to admit that don’t even know that the Geist Half Marathon and the Fishers YMCA are nonprofit organizations,” Reardon-McSoley says. “We are able to really join together and raise a lot of money that is going right back into this community.” Volunteers will, of course, be needed for the 5K and throughout the entire Spark!Fishers event as well. There will be more than 500 volunteer opportunities available for the Spark!Fishers event and about 55 of those positions will be solely for the 5K race. “I serve on the volunteer community for Spark!Fishers at large, and there is a lot going on behind the scenes,” ReardonMcSoley says. “There literally is something for everyone. If you have a group of friends or co-workers that want to serve together, we have plenty of opportunities for that. Adults, students, all ages are welcome. There are a variety of shifts and most are 4-hour shifts. For the 5K, we will need
people helping us at the start/finish line, people manning the water stations and lots of other opportunities.” “Volunteers are critical,” Napariu adds. “Anyone who says they want to volunteer, we will find a spot for you. There are all sorts of opportunities, whether it is with us and the 5K or Spark!Fishers in general.” To register for the inaugural Spark!Fishers 5K visit sparkfishers.com/5k. For volunteer opportunities, visit sparkfishers.com/
volunteer. Volunteer applications are due by June 15. “This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of history,” Reardon-McSoley says. “With this being the inaugural Spark!Fishers 5K, we are going to have some outstanding medals and shirts for every participant. Those will be great keepsakes for everyone to mark the occasion. This really is the turning of a chapter, and we are going to make this a very special and memorable race.”

Knocking on doors trying to get anyone to take a chance on his business took a while, but once he did, he was able to build one of only a few jewelers that had a full-time staff dedicated to creating custom jewelry, working on repairs and creating custom molds. Once his wholesale business was developed, he took the next step of opening up a retail store in 1998. Achieving his dream of creating a successful jewelry business over a 20-year period is what gave him the ability to recognize the hard work, vision and effort that Mann was doing to fulfill her dream. The partnership was formed and along

The social media contest will result in one lucky winner receiving a $500 shopping spree at Master Jewelers. The contest was announced on Facebook and is also on Instagram and Twitter. Mann has selected seven different pieces of jewelry that she will be wearing throughout May. All that the public needs to do is “catch” Pippa wearing jewelry in the month of May and snap a photo. These pictures or videos can come from any media outlet, including news, websites and Pippa’s social media networks. The only catch is that the picture or video must have been posted or published in the month of May. Most important, the entries must include the hashtag #SpottingPippasPicks to be eligible. In addition to providing beautiful jewelry to one of the most widely recognized female race car drivers in the world, Master Jewelers is also dedicated to offering beautiful jewelry, custom and designer, along with modifying any custom jewelry that you already own. Jennifer Suskovich, sixth-grade teacher at Sand Creek Intermediate
Sixth Graders Are Lighting Up Sand Creek Intermediate With Solar Energy Writer / Matt Keating Photography provided by Sand Creek Intermediate & Matt Keating
Sixth graders at Sand Creek Intermediate, 11550 E. 131st Street, Fishers, are lighting up their school. Literally. Jennifer Suskovich, a sixth grade teacher, says the school has received grant money to make the building solar friendly, and many of the kids have been so excited about the project they are staying after school to work on it.
She says her students have already begun creating small-scale solar panel prototypes. This will help them understand how the panels would need to move in order to follow the sun. Their completed project will be located on the front lawn of the school grounds. “The students tested the prototypes’ ability to move towards the sun with a winter and summer sun simulation,” Suskovich says. “After the initial test, students will be required to redesign and test their prototypes after they have made atFishers.com / JUNE 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 41
improvements on the initial designs.” Once the panels arrive and are wired into the building, students from each of Suskovich’s classes are going to manually move the panels each hour and document and record the angle of measurement and locations of the panels and record the location of the sun in the sky. “This will give them a better understanding of the daily and seasonal movements of the sun,” Suskovich says. “These hands-on activities and studies will cover the Indiana
State Science Standard Design Models to describe how Earth’s rotation, revolution, tilt and interaction with the sun and moon cause seasons and changes in daylight hours.” Suskovich says that as Sand Creek students gain an understanding on how the panels have to move to receive the maximum amount of sunlight to power the classrooms, students will begin designing a solar tracking system to move the panels. “Students are currently researching online resources to obtain a better understanding of how the solar tracking systems work,” Suskovich says. “We also have a contract at Indiana Municipal Power Agency, a company that has built 13 solar panels in communities across Indiana.” The solar activities will also provide Suskovich’s students with a four-month real world study of all four components of STEM. It will also include an art component. “This project will challenge students to use their science-based knowledge on the daily/ seasonal solar movements to find the ideal location to place solar panels and increase the amount of time our class is powered by solar energy,” Suskovich says. “Finally, students will collaborate with the art department to ensure that the designs for the solar panel tracking systems are aesthetically pleasing on our school grounds.” Grant Money Suskovich says her first grant was awarded in November. “Our class received $1,192 through The Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation Zimmerman/Moeller Fund,” Suskovich says. “The second grant we received in the middle of November was a PPG worth $1,000.” Suskovich and school staff members have begun the purchasing process for the monies awarded from the first two grants. “We are buying nine Sun King Home 120 Solar Lamp System kits with three lamps,” Suskovich says. “This will provide us with nine solar panels and 27 lamps, which will 42 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atFishers.com
light two classrooms. We will compare the amount of time both of our classes are powered by solar power using the two different brands of solar lamp system kits. “At the beginning of January, we were selected for ‘The Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant,’ worth $4,000,” Suskovich adds. “I am currently completing ‘The Toshiba America Foundation’ Grant for $48,000 in hopes that I can use both grants to continue to convert more of the classrooms in Sand Creek Intermediate to solar energy.” In addition to helping the environment, Suskovich says the project will also have an economic effect on the school district. “The energy bill is the second largest budget item for HSE schools,” Suskovich says. “Our utility bill is the second largest budget item for HSE schools. Our utility bill is paid out of the general fund. This means that if we reduce our utility bill, we will have more money to put back into our children’s education.” The project should be completed by May, and Suskovich hopes the visibility of the project on the school’s front lawn will start conversations and encourage others in the district to also consider converting their classrooms to solar energy, and serve as a pilot program for others. “Energy conservation in a quickly growing community is one of the challenges we face in Fishers,” Suskovich says. “The need for local businesses to use alternative, clean energy systems is important to our environment.” atFishers.com / JUNE 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 43

When the Fishers YMCA first opened in 2002, it created opportunities for residents to try new activities. Kelley Richards approached the Fishers YMCA with an idea. She wanted to offer dance lessons to children and the new YMCA could be the perfect partner to make that dream come true. “Fifteen years ago, the Y welcomed my idea with open arms,” Richards says. Her first dance classes were held at the facility and 40 students participated. The first dance recital of her YMCA dance students was called “Wishes.” “Dance is my passion,” says Richards, who was a professional singer and dancer before moving to Fishers and raising her family. As a follow up to her performing life, she started a new career as
an instructor and dance school owner. Her experience as a dance class teacher at the Fishers YMCA led her to open her own studio in 2010, which she named Wishes Dance Studio. Today, Wishes Dance Studio teaches more than 1,000 students the art of dance at a large studio facility near 126th Street and SR 37. Richards and her staff teach ballet, pointe, tap, modern, jazz, contemporary and hip hop to students from 18 months old to adults. “Our tremendous teaching staff is the reason why Wishes has grown so much over the years,” Richards says. “They believe as I do that we have just one rule for our students – to have fun.” Wishes offers the fun of dance in multiple classes for pre-school, youth, teen and adult and for all skill levels. Wishes also offers dance instruction, but Richards feels that it is more than that.

“We believe in three S’s,” Richards says. “We want our students to grow in their self-confidence, be sweating and be smiling.” Performances are an important part of Wishes’ approach to dance because they help the students grow as dancers and as confident individuals. Each performance includes exciting dance costumes that enhance the performance and the dancers’ enjoyment, too. “The students feel great when they are on stage and hear the applause,” she says. “They feel validated and blossom into strong dancers, both inside and out.” Wishes Dance Studio will be performing for the entire community at the first Spark!Fishers event held on June 30. Students will be dancing on the performance stage during the event as well as in the parade that evening. Wishes will be partnering with School of Rock to create a special parade performance. School of Rock students will be playing live music on a float while Wishes Dance Studio students dance to the music. This is the first time the two arts education businesses will team up for a parade experience.
performances specifically. Twilights are dancers ages eight to 12 and Dream Catchers are dancers 13 and over. Starlettes are an auditionbased dance company and Synergy is a pre-professional company of a few high school dancers who may be pursuing dance as a career. These four companies travel for special performances. They have performed at Disney World and will be traveling to New York City this summer to dance at the Statue of Liberty and Central Park. Other Wishes performances include Pacer games, Fever games and Youth America Grand Prix, the world's largest international student dance competition. The most unique performance that Wishes Dance Studio offers to the Fishers community takes place in the fall. The Wishes facility is transformed into the Haunted Dance Studio, a dance-themed haunted house for the Halloween season. The event begins with a ballerina awaking from a coffin to dance en pointe and concludes with a dance-filled masquerade ball. The experience is new each year so that community visitors can be surprised by the scares the haunted house creates but little ones can have a “lights-on” experience instead.
“We are excited to be selected to perform at Spark!Fishers,” Richards says. “This is a brand new community event that celebrates As Richards looks to the future for her Wishes Dance Studio, she sees greater performance opportunities for the students and the creative ideas and our students from all different levels have the Fishers community. She is inspired by the new Spark!Fishers event chance to become a part of it all.” to try something new and keep improving and reinventing, for the sake of her students - and for the love of dance. Bikers Hit the Road to Raise Money, Awareness for Riley Kids Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photography Provided by Miracle Ride
Put on that leather jacket, fasten your helmet, get ready for a wild ride. It’s time for the 25th Anniversary Miracle Ride benefiting the Riley Children’s Foundation. The foundation makes it possible to provide important treatments and programs for Riley patients. Over 3,000 biker dudes and biker babes will be taking to the streets June 2-3 for the Miracle Ride. The event starts Saturday with the poker runs. Riders registered for the poker runs start from various points outside of Indy, including Ft. Wayne, Muncie, Bloomington and Munster. On their way to Indy, they’ll make stops at various prescribed points to have their poker run passport stamped with a poker hand. The “Big Ride” is Sunday, June 3. Bikers will depart from Allison Transmission, wind through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, past Riley Hospital for Children and return to the 8 Seconds Saloon.
The 2018 ride will feature some exciting attractions to commemorate the 25th Anniversary milestone. A nationally known artist and employee of Allison Transmission, the Title Sponsor, will be performing. Don’t miss other headliners including a performance from The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Motorcycle Drill Team. Bob and Tom Show’s Tom Griswold and Kristi Lee will be there to introduce the 2018 Miracle Ride Ambassador Families and Miracle Ride Sponsors. One of the Harley motorcycles that will be given away will be on display for photo opportunities. Miracle Ride is the nation’s largest and longest running motorcycle charity event, and it’s Riley’s largest independent fundraiser, raising almost $6M since the first ride in 1994.
To drive home the impact of Miracle Ride on kids, the foundation selects Ambassador Families as spokespeople. The 2018 Ambassador Families are the Davis Family of Fishers and the Theisen family of Noblesville. The Davis family became connected to Riley when their son, Lucas, developed a severe respiratory infection as a newborn. Although it seemed at first that the doctors had gotten to the bottom of the issues, Lucas continued to experience relapses, saddling him with ear infections, sinus infections and even pertussis.
Through it all, the Davises have remained hopeful because the doctors and other caregivers have remained hopeful. During the process, the Riley doctors have guided Lucas through his care by keeping unwavering focus on the most important “If there is ever an easy charity to raise money part of the care plan: giving Lucas a voice. for, it’s Riley Kids,” says Laura Buckner, As for being an Ambassador Family, the Senior Communications Officer for Riley Davises say there are so many reasons Kids Foundation. “Without this ride event, they’re grateful to have been chosen. we would never reach this audience.” 46 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atFishers.com
“We can’t thank people enough for their generosity,” Nicole says. “Their donations provide things for the patients that allow them to lead normal lives. Lucas now lives a normal life. He’s able to pursue his dream of becoming an Olympic gymnast.” “I’m going to go to College and get a degree in linear genetics,” Lucas adds. “I’m not going to let this define me.” The Theisen family is the second Ambassador Family, and they’re also hoping to use the platform to spread the good word about the Miracle Ride and about Riley. The Theisen’s daughter, Emily, was born with GA1, a rare genetic metabolic disorder. Emily has endured a pancreatectomy and spleen removal, and her whole intestinal system has been reworked to allow for the transplant of islet cells that deliver insulin to her liver. Like Lucas, Emily spent a lot of time as an

The percussion ensemble from Fishers High School took top honors at the annual WGI (Winter Guard International) World Championship competition on April 20 in Dayton, Ohio. The competition is the penultimate of championships for indoor color guard, percussion and winds. The percussion ensemble took tops in the Percussion Concert Class beating Ayala High School from Chino Hills, California.
The percussion ensemble, led by Mr. Chad Kohler, Director of Athletic Bands and Percussion at Fishers High School, took on 30 other schools in their class from all over the country, beating them out with a special arrangement called “Geometrick.” “Geometrick” was specially arranged for the Fishers High School Percussion Ensemble by Matt Ridge, an FHS alumnus and current student in Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.

“It occurred to me that the 2018 WGI competition was on the 20th, and it marked the 20th anniversary of my mom’s passing, so, I wanted to honor her in a special way,” Kohler says. “My mother was an avid piano player, and her favorite tune was Anitra’s Dance by Edvard Grieg, so that was the foundation of our show.”
show, Kohler put even more thought into planning the show. “My mom was a Math teacher most of her life, and she often used geometric shapes to teach,” he says. “Naming the new arrangement ‘Geometrick' was the perfect way to honor her.” The Fishers High School Percussion Ensemble performed the piece, which consists of four separate movements, for

“The third movement slowed things down a notch with a soft, ballad-like interpretation, and the fourth movement closed the show with the original melody in a fast-paced

talented and dedicated group I’ve ever had.” When Kohler registered the Percussion Ensemble for the 2018 WGI World Competition, there was no question that they belonged in the concert class. But the students didn’t expect the win. “Ayala has taken the win for the last four years,” Kohler says. “We practiced the piece on average six hours a week since December, so, our group expected to score well. But they were very surprised to beat the defending champs.” The students had another unexpected reaction at the competition. “When the students heard about the inspiration behind the piece, they got very emotional,” Kohler says. “They all said they felt like they knew my mom through the piece. There were lots of tears.” The Percussion Ensemble wasn’t Fishers’ only success story of the competition. In the Scholastic World Class in the movement category, the indoor drumline placed in the finals with their rendition of “Mask,” a theatric rendition of a tribal dance telling the story of how the new leader takes the tribe on a journey with percussion. “It was an epic tribal show,” Kohler says. There is a lot more in store for this incredible band program. “We’ll plan to enter the competition again next year,” Kohler says. “The students have such amazing talent. For a program in only its 12th year in existence to win the title is phenomenal. We’ve gotten such support for the program from parents, the community and especially our administrators, Principal Jason Urban and Superintendent of the Hamilton Southeastern School District, Dr. Alan Bourff. We can’t thank everyone enough for their support.” As Fishers High School wraps up another school year, Kohler will be looking ahead to next year and his band program of more than 400 students. NEW MEXICAN RESTAURANT DEBUTS AT FISHERS STATION SHOPPING CENTER
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Jamie Sangar
Celso Gonzalez, general manager of Tequila Sunrise Mexican Cuisine near 116th Street and Allisonville Road in Fishers, says a key element to the establishment’s success so far, with regard to food and customer satisfaction, is the avoidance of complacency. “We’re always trying hard to make ourselves different from any other Mexican
restaurant,” Gonzalez says. “I want it to be unique. Our menu is probably 75 percent different than any other Mexican restaurant. All the love and passion that we put into the food is what makes the difference between us and other restaurants. I want to offer the best service and really earn every dollar that comes into my door.” Gonzalez says the recently opened restaurant, like its popular sister store in Brownsburg, offers a unique take on 52 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2018 / atFishers.com
Mexican fare with traditional dishes like carne asada, mole con pollo and tamales, along with more customized offerings including portobello mushroom tacos, chicken and spinach taquitos, seafood nachos and chicken zucchini. “If a member of your family doesn’t want anything Mexican, we have things like ribs, burgers and fish on the menu,” says Gonzalez, an Indy resident since 1999. “And we create our own mixes for a couple of our
cocktails – the roasted pineapple orange margarita is popular, and our grilled mango and fresh ginger margarita is very good.” Several years after opening their successful Brownsburg location in 2010, Gonzalez and his brother, owner Gerardo, started searching for the right spot to expand their culinary concept. Last fall, space became available in the Fishers Station shopping center, which is being redeveloped to include a new Kroger and also houses a Jason’s Deli, and the Tequila Sunrise team decided to capitalize on the growing Fishers market. The Tequila Sunrise staff hosted a public ribboncutting ceremony in the fall attended by local officials and Chamber of Commerce members. Gonzalez says the community response thus far has been positive and hopes to gain a following akin to Brownsburg through a continued commitment to quality cuisine. The establishment’s modern, minimalistic visual aesthetic, with understated black and silver accents throughout two separate dining areas, was chosen – like everything else about the restaurant – with the customer in mind. “I want people to feel at home and relaxed, and we thought a contemporary type of look, with neutral colors, would be the right thing to do,” says Gonzalez, adding that the restaurant currently operates with 32 part-time and full-time employees. While Gonzalez is excited at the possibility of future expansion and would like to eventually see four or five Tequila Sunrise stores throughout Indy, his team’s focus right now is on making their Fishers location the best it can be. “We want to make sure we’re doing a great job here for the customers before starting to take another step,” he says. “Again, I would like to earn every dollar that comes in here. That makes me happier than having a lot of money in my pocket but not having great results at the restaurant.” Tequila Sunrise Mexican Cuisine is located at 11653 Fishers Station Drive.
