CRUMBL COOKIES OPENS FIRST INDIANA LOCATION IN FISHERS Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Robby Berry
When Crumbl Cookies opened on January 14, people were lined up all the way down the street to be the first customers. For the next four days, customers swamped the new business to try the store’s unique and delicious cookies. Tyson Barrett, co-owner of the 1,300-square-foot shop, said it was a nice
problem to have. “We sold 26,000 cookies in four days,” Barrett says. “It was crazy busy, but it was also wonderful. I loved it. There was a lot of excitement and anticipation from people before we opened. I enjoyed it when we saw people lined up out the door on opening day. That’s a great feeling.” Barrett, a franchisee of Crumbl Cookies who co-owns the business with his brother, 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2021 / TownePost.com
Chad Barrett, says curbside pickup, takeout and delivery business has also been strong. “People have responded to our cookies because they are so hot and fresh,” he says. “Crumbl Cookies is really becoming popular as a chain. We are really expanding. There has been a lot of positive growth. This is our first Indiana store. Crumbl Cookies is based in Utah, and the fresh-baked cookies have taken off since the business started. We have over 140 locations nationwide. It’s a great franchise.”
The franchise was started by cousins Sawyer are Milk Chocolate Chip and a Chilled Hemsley and Jason McGowan. They opened Sugar cookie. They are always here.” their first Crumbl Cookies in Logan, Utah. Crumbl Cookies also offers ice cream in half-pint containers. Barrett believes the store’s unique, rotating menu and delicious cookie-of-the-day “We have been selling a lot of ice cream offerings have made them very popular. too,” Barrett adds. “We have flavors like “We are located in the Fishers Town Center, Chocolate Cake, Lemon Poppyseed, S’mores, Buckeye Brownie, Salted Caramel, which gets a lot of traffic,” Barrett says. Cookies and Cream, and Raspberry “People have told us they love the different Cheesecake. We have had a lot of business cookies, and are planning to come back. A lot of families have come in. We have a good for that as well, which is a nice way to get things started.” cookie menu that rotates weekly. You can get four different specialty flavors, and we have different kinds of cookies. Our cookies Barrett has big plans for Crumbl Cookies. are also about 4.5” in diameter. People have “We are going to have a store at 3329 East told us they really like the variety. We also have our popular trademark cookies, which 86th Street in the Keystone Shoppes, near
Keystone at the Crossing, that we are very excited about,” he says. “We are also going to have stores in Greenwood, Carmel and Zionsville. We are planning more stores as well. Things are really taking off.” To get your next fresh cookie, check out Crumbl Cookies at 8395 East 116th Street in Fishers. BROWSE LOCAL FISHERS FARMERS MARKET RETURNS
to offer this to the community. We feel we can offer it safely for people to interact and shop local.”

Jackie Leeuw, Fishers Farmers Market Manager
The Fishers Farmers Market is back and better than ever. The market is presented by Fishers Parks and hosts local producers, makers and growers every Saturday from May 1 to September 25. It runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater in downtown Fishers.
“We love that our market is outdoors,” says Sarah Sandquist, director of parks and recreation. “Even if you are vaccinated and outside, we still encourage guests to wear masks and to maintain social distance. We have so much space and we’re excited we’re able
The market hosts around 65 vendors each week, which is 15 more than in previous years. Products include local plants, beverages, baked goods, ready-toeat concessions and dog treats. “One of the wins we had last year coming out of COVID was that we fully expanded the footprint around the entire Nickel Plate Amphitheater space,” Sandquist says. “We realized that that layout works well for us and has allowed us to seek more vendors.” Fishers Parks leaders know that local food is more important now than ever.
JUNE 2021
“Think about when you purchase a tomato from our farmers market,” Sandquist says. “You know the farmer’s name who grew the tomato and the farm it came from, and you know all the details about their growing practices. That tomato is going to be ripe when you buy it, and it’s going to have ripened in the sun, whereas with a tomato from the grocery store, it might have traveled 1,500 miles to get to you.” Additionally, the market leaders focus on going green. “This is an initiative we started a couple of years ago and then paused last year,” Sandquist says. “We do feel strongly that we’d like to be a plastic-free market, so we encourage people to bring their own reusable bags.” Specialty days feature extra vendors that are specific to a theme. “Themed days are an enhancement to our regular market,” Sandquist says. “We have our green fair day featuring businesses that promote sustainability, conservation, environmental protection and health. We have our Fishers Freeboards Day and that typically takes place during national senior citizen week.” Each Saturday, yoga is provided at 8 a.m. on the stage. “The yoga class is free for residents,” Sandquist says. “It’s a partnership with local yoga studios. Those interested can check our web page for the studio schedule.” Kids aren’t left out of the fun or the selling. “This year we’re expanding our Biz Kids Day,” Sandquist says. “We invite youth vendors to participate in the market. We usually have about 40 to 45 vendors. These kids are so creative. Their booths are professional-looking, and there is incredible diversity in their products. We’ve had such a great response from that, so we’re still going to do our big day in July, but each week we’re offering three to five additional kid vendors.” Every week there is a different activity for kids to take advantage of at the market.
JUNE 2021
“Our Farm Hands kids program allows kids to participate in an activity throughout the market, collect stamps at each spot, and then turn the card back in for market bucks,” Sandquist says. “They’re little wooden nickels that work like real money. It’s a great way to encourage kids to try new foods, and also purchase things at the market to take home with them as well.” The market accepts SNAP benefits to provide an equitable experience for all. “A majority of our vendors can accept SNAP benefits,” Sandquist says. “We want to make sure we’re inclusive to all, and this is one way we’re able to do so.” Sandquist notes the Fishers Farmers Market is not able to work without the help of local volunteers. “We have two different opportunities to volunteer,” Sandquist says. “One is to be a singular volunteer, and that would be to come in the morning early and help with setup and teardown, or to be an ambassador at our park tent, or helping to take our attendance counts. Additionally, we have our Market Muscle opportunity, which is such a great way for businesses to help volunteer and have a booth. We’re seeking volunteers for the whole summer.” Local musicians provide live music each week. “We have such a beautiful space there with the renovated stage at the amphitheater,” Sandquist says. “We have local talent booked each week. It’s always a surprise and a delight to see who is playing each week.” The Fishers Farmers Market is located at 6 Municipal Drive. For more information about the market, visit playfishers.com/FARMERSMARKET.

HOME SWEET HOME ALLEN WILLIAMS REALTY GROUP IS HERE FOR YOU
The Allen Williams team, most of whom reside in Fishers and Geist, know the area well and embrace technology to help promote their listings to the public on several different platforms, both in print and online. While most real estate agents have one real estate website, Allen’s team owns 20 — for instance, fishersrealestate.com, fishersluxuryhomes.com, geistluxuryhomes. com, carmelluxuryhomes.com, indyluxuryhomes.com, and zionsvillefinehomes.com — to name a few.
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided by Amy Payne & Allen Williams Realty Group
Another lifetime ago, Allen Williams was literally living in a firehouse in upstate New York. In 1993, he moved to Indianapolis to be closer to his sister. He had every intention of joining the Indianapolis Fire Department when his sister, who was in real estate, introduced him to the profession. “I caught the bug and have never looked back,” says Williams, who began as a new home salesperson before getting into the residential real estate market. He now has a team of eight working with him at Allen Williams Realty Group. In July 2020, they joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Indiana Realty. Berkshire Hathaway is one of the top real estate companies not only in Central Indiana, but nationally as well. In fact, more than one in 10 homes sold in Hamilton County are sold with a Berkshire Hathaway agent. “We have been blown away by their marketing, technology, client support and leadership,” Williams says.
“Our team has a large footprint in Central Indiana real estate, and we’ve found that having several targeted websites allows us to reach a multitude of local and relocation buyers,” says Williams, who’s nearly 30 years of experience has allowed him to develop strong relationships in the real estate community that he draws on when connecting clients with their dream homes. “We combine new-age technology with old-school customer service,” he adds. Most of his team has been with Williams for several years, and two have been with him for more than 15. “We support one another and have the same goals, to make sure our clients are taken care of and get amazing service,” Williams says. The team has received numerous awards, most recently, Berkshire Hathaway’s Diamond Award, presented to the top half percent of Berkshire agents in the nation. In addition, Allen’s group has been named as one of the premiere teams in Central Indiana for several years and was recognized by the Indianapolis Business Journal as one of the top real estate teams in all of Central Indiana. For nine years, the Indianapolis Monthly Magazine has also honored Allen with the Five-Star Agent Award for Excellence in Customer Service.
JUNE 2021
“The Five-Star Agent Award is determined by client surveys from sales the previous year, so we love this metric,” Williams says. “This is really an award given to us by our clients and it means more to us than any sales achievement.” Though they sell a number of high-end luxury properties, they sell homes at all price points. “We sell first-time homebuyers all the way up to Super Bowl champions,” Williams says. “We help with new construction, existing homes, single-family residences and condos.” And while it’s a hot seller’s market right now, Williams and his team can still help buyers find inventory.
“We have developed a real knack for finding our clients’ inventory that’s not necessarily on the market,” Williams says. “Sometimes that means knocking on doors or using our vast REALTOR® network, both within our company and even outside of it. We use social media regularly and aren’t afraid to pick up the phone to ask past clients, ‘Hey, have you thought of selling and taking advantage of this market?’” Williams and his wife Becky have a blended family, sharing five beautiful children: Ross (21), Morgan (19), Nick (18), Brooke (16) and Ava (15). Ross attends Butler University, Morgan goes to Indiana University, Nick will be starting at Indiana University this fall, Brooke will be a high school junior, and Ava will be a sophomore.

DIFFERENT DADS, DIFFERENT GIFTS FATHER’S DAY GIFTING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A CHALLENGE Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
That’s right, Father’s Day is right around the corner. Are you ready? Men can be so hard to buy for — is there anything he hasn’t gotten for himself already? And it’s hard to find something that will make him feel loved, appreciated, and surprised on his special day. But because those dads and grandpas out there do so much for us, we must try to nail it! So, here’s a few ideas of ways to spoil all those different dudes in your life!
THE GOLF LOVER DAD Whether this is the man who can’t leave the golf course himself, or the one who always has the golf channel on the TV, it’s time to tee up a perfect Father’s Day for him. If you want to spend time playing golf with him, surprise him with a Father’s Day tee time at your favorite golf course or at a place like TopGolf. You might also consider getting him some fun golf socks and/or personalized golf balls.
THE OUTDOORSY DAD This is the dad who loves being outside doing things like camping, fishing, hiking, etc. He probably has just about everything he needs but consider a gift card to his favorite shop like Cabella’s or a new cooler filled with his favorite brew. If gifting isn’t your thing, maybe go on a hike with your dad and spend some quality time doing what he likes. It could be spending an entire day fishing, but whatever it is, just make sure you have an agenda of which he approves.
THE GRILL MASTER DAD This dad loves to be outside by the grill with a beer in his hand and tongs or a spatula in the other. If you want to get him something special, consider personalized grill tools, an apron, and an order of some good steaks. The grill master dad probably has a lot of grill tools already, but ask a few questions: Does he need a new grill? Or maybe some new accessories? Or does he want to try something new? Feel him out a few weeks before Father’s Day and you’ll find something that’ll make him smile. And then enjoy a backyard cookout celebrating him with your family and friends! JUNE 2021
THE ‘HAS IT ALL DAD’ This is the dad who has it all. If he wants something, he buys it. They are the hardest to shop for and they are difficult to surprise. For this dad, you might need coordination amongst family members to keep him from buying things or to know what the latest must-have is that’s on his list. There are three routes to go with this guy. You can try tried and true treats you know he loves that are edible like candy, dinners, etc. You can try to buy something that is completely different but unique like a cool bottle opener, a personalized etched growler, or maybe customized art. Or in the end, these guys always like gift cards for their next impromptu purchase.
THE ‘ALL WORK/NO PLAY DAD’ It might sound silly, but these hard-working dads need some “me” time just like moms do. Check with him first, but he might appreciate a spa day! There’s nothing wrong with a day spent relaxing and enjoying a little bit of pampering on top of it. Or, if he’s not into those things, consider a nice beverage — maybe a top-
notch whiskey and you can even get whiskey glasses and whiskey balls to go with it! It’s another way to relax that he’ll appreciate. Here’s to all the dads out there who help change the diapers, tie the shoes, drive the kids to school, make dinners, play in the backyard, and so much more. There are so many great things you can do with your dad and it’s not always about the gifting. Spending good quality time with them is even more special. Whether it’s fishing all afternoon, having a movie marathon, or spending an afternoon on the porch catching up, your father will love the memories made and the bonding time.

CHANGING THE BARBER GAME Owner Antwain Booker Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Michael Durr
For Antwain Booker, there’s a lot more to being a good barber than cutting hair. “Guys come in, and they may have been broken up with,” says Booker, who’s known to many by his nickname, Kuts. “There’s always something that a guy wants to come in and talk to you about, but when they leave the chair they feel like a different person. That’s what I like about cutting hair.” The owner and founder of New Element Barber, Booker cuts hair around the city in his own mobile barbershop. In addition to Booker’s professional barber setup, his stripped-out RV features its own
NEW ELEMENT BARBER PROVIDES AN EXPERIENCE UNLIKE ANY OTHER bathroom and waiting room, providing customers with a unique barbershop experience. Each week Booker stations his mobile barbershop at different locations around central Indiana, including Broad Ripple on Mondays, Fountain Square on Thursdays, Fishers on Fridays, Carmel on Saturdays and Zionsville on Sundays. Having cut hair since the age of 13, Booker realized he wanted to be a barber while attending college at Indiana State University. While there, he was also given the nickname Kuts, which has stuck ever since.
JUNE 2021
“I was at Indiana State, and I used to have flyers called ‘Kuts by Twain,’” Booker says. “I was at football practice one day, and they said, ‘We’re just going to start calling you Kuts. You cut everybody’s hair on campus.’ ” When Booker moved to Indianapolis, he first started cutting hair professionally in 2002 at Craig’s Creations at 49th Street and College Avenue.
“That’s always been my area,” Booker says of the Broad Ripple neighborhood. After working at several other barbershops around the area, however, he eventually decided it was time to start his own business. “A good friend told me, ‘Go home. Save your money up. You have good clientele. You’ll do fine,’” Booker says. With this notion in mind, Booker started New Era Barber out of his home in 2010 before eventually deciding to build his own mobile barbershop in 2015. Dr. Yvonne Stokes is replacing Dr. Allen Bourff as Superintendent of Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) Schools on July 1. Stokes currently serves as assistant superintendent for the School Town of Munster. Before her role in Munster, she worked in the associate superintendent’s department at Indianapolis Public Schools, where she served as an academic improvement officer. Stokes credits her parents for her desire to be a child advocate.

of passion, opportunity, and an internal drive to support. And it didn’t hurt that I used to live here, because I always knew about the great things HSE schools were doing. I just thought in such a time as this, why not me?” Stokes was selected from a pool of 25 candidates. She was chosen because of her comprehensive education experience, her collaborative approach to addressing challenges and her approachable communication style. She received her doctorate in educational leadership from Purdue University in 2013. Stokes has already started what she calls her “pre-work” but has ambitions in mind for her first 100 days in the role. “During my first 100 days, I want to do what I call a listening tour,” says Stokes. “I want to make sure I’m moving throughout the community and building support. I want to find out where there might be areas where we need to make some shifts or not make any shifts at all.” Stokes will focus on four critical areas. “I want to look at organizational efficiency and effectiveness,” says Stokes. “I also want to look at teaching and learning to make sure our students are having their needs met. I will look at culture and context in regard to a virtual environment versus an in-person environment. Lastly, I will look at operations and finance because we need to continue to have a healthy budget. Those key areas are critical to success for the schools.” What sets Stokes apart is her passion for supporting students. “I know sometimes it’s almost a cliche, but I’m always going to support children. I’m a true champion for them. I’m truly passionate about supporting students.” For more information, visit hseschools.org. 34 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JUNE 2021 / TownePost.com

SPARK! FISHERS RETURNS JUNE 22-26

After being canceled last year, Spark!Fishers is returning with even more ways to get involved in the celebration. The event is hosted by First Internet Bank and begins June 22 through June 26. “This year, we’re pulling the activities out across the week of June 22,” says Sarah Sandquist, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Fishers. “We decided to split up the activities to encourage spacing and social distancing.” This year’s theme is Hometown Heroes. “We want to honor Fishers residents who served our community and our country throughout the past year,” Sandquist says. “Our theme honors those from the US Armed Forces, to those who worked the front lines directly with COVID-19, public safety officials, teachers, doctors, nurses and medical staff who had a tremendously busy year dealing with the pandemic. This event honors all of those people who helped to get back to a place where we can have this celebration.” The activities kick off June 22 at 7 p.m. with a concert at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. “The Tuesday night show is part of our Tuesday night concert series,” Sandquist says. “The Midtown Madmen will perform. Their song list includes songs from the ’50s and ’60s.” On June 23 at 7 p.m., attendees can participate in a 5K run.
“I’m excited to have a different kind of 5K,” Sandquist says. “It will be family-friendly. We have a half-pint race for kids. It’s hosted in partnership with Geist Half Marathon and Fishers YMCA. It will be nice to have in the evening, so it’s not too hot for participants.” Car enthusiasts will love the Spark!Fishers Car and Art Show around the Municipal Complex June 24 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. “We previewed this event in 2019, and it was very successful,” Sandquist says. “We had about 65 cars at the show. Tons of people were interested in coming to view the cars and participate. So, we wanted to expand this event and offer it almost as a standalone event. But still under the family of Spark!Fishers. Throughout the years with planning Spark!Fishers, we’ve tried to celebrate and incorporate art into the festival. We feel like this collaboration of art and cars will be a lot of fun for everyone. It takes place on the central green right in front of City Hall.” The artwork at the event showcases local Fishers’ artists and other surrounding communities. “We have a variety of art that will be on display along with some artisan crafts,” says Tom Rich, Fishers Arts Council president. “Our featured artist is Gary Dausch, (who creates) automotive fine art. He will have prints as well as apparel in a mobile gallery. We have about five to six artists who specialize in car racing or car-themed art and photography. In total, we should have about 25 to 30 artists and artisans displaying their art and crafts. We also will have two artists, Greg Clack and Walt Thacker, painting at the show. “We’re excited for a high-energy show with such a recognizable band,” Sandquist says. “They have a few hits everybody will be waiting to hear along with some of their new music.” The week culminates with the Spark!Fishers Street Fair, parade and fireworks at dusk on June 26. “We’ll have the Farmers Market in the morning, but that’s not officially part of Spark!Fishers,” Sandquist says. “Starting at 3 p.m., we’ll have music on the amphitheater stage. There will be local vendors with food and art. Community groups will have tables to share information. There will be a kids’ zone with inflatables, and we’ll even have a Ferris wheel right on 116th Street.” The parade route changed this year to ensure spacing and safety. “The parade goes right through the middle of the festival,” Sandquist says. “In previous years, we’d see a mass exodus of people leaving the street fair to go see the parade. Now people can stay where they are and still see the parade.” The evening concludes with fireworks. “We’re so happy to be back this year after not having the event last year,” Sandquist says. “The event is very well spaced out, and we have plenty of space. We’ll have hand washing stations throughout the area. We’re looking forward to a great year.” All the events are free to attend. For more information, visit sparkfishers.com.

Matt Schleuter and two partners are opening the Parks Place Pub later this summer in the former Brixx Pizza location in downtown Fishers. Schleuter visited the Towne Post Network studios to talk about the history behind the name which harkens back 140 years to the original saloon that opened where the Nickel Plate Bar is located. Plans are in the works to add a smart pergola over the outdoor dining area, install open-air garage doors, and have 46 televisions to give downtown Fishers a local hangout to watch live sporting events.
