Located in Fishers near Target at 11680 Commercial Drive, Village Playcare offers parents a unique and flexible service. It is a childcare solution for infants up to 12 years old, that is upscale yet affordable and meets the needs of today’s parents. Children play, learn and socialize in an enjoyable, safe environment either for a few hours or a parent’s entire workday. Co-owners Sarah and Kevin Negangard came up with the concept of Village Playcare after experiencing the need for quality, on-demand daycare. Sarah, who is certified in Pre-K and Elementary and has 10 years teaching experience, holds a degree in fine arts along with a master’s with a specialization in cross-cultural teaching. While working in the field of educational publishing, she had a home office but needed child care while she had appointments. cheerful burst of color with a playful message recently appeared on the side of the Verizon Store in the Fishers District. As the first location in a series of four murals, the installation can be found among the dining, retail and hotel development owned and operated by Thompson Thrift Retail Group. The unique artwork is the result of a collaboration between Thompson Thrift, the Fishers Arts and Cultural Commission and Nickel Plate Arts. The City of Fishers referred Thompson Thrift to Nickel Plate Arts to facilitate their wish to create memorable and exceptional artwork to set their development apart. Nickel Plate Arts had the system in place to send a callout to regional art councils and more than 1,000 artists. With an understanding of how mural art would be able to build the sense of place Thompson Thrift desired, Nickel Plate Arts assisted the company in narrowing the submissions down to the four artists who were ultimately chosen.
atFishers.com / JULY 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 9
“We were looking for a modern blend of styles that was vibrant but not too much like graffiti or informal street art,” says Aili McGill, Nickel Plate Arts Executive Director. “We wanted whimsy and a fun message in a social area. The installations will have permanence so it was important to choose artists that were the cream of the crop. We were looking for personal experience and a well-established reputation.” Local artist Koda Witsken was chosen to paint the first installation. With the brightly hued words, “Thanks for being weird with me” alongside a large yellow flower, the mural is hard to miss. As the City of Fishers reopens after the spring season of COVID-19 shutdowns, the colorful background will be the perfect spot for social media posts as residents return to the nearby retail establishments. Witsken is excited and thankful for the opportunity to display her art in her hometown. I grew up in the HSE school system, so being able to give back to my hometown means the world to me as an artist,” Witsken says. “‘Thanks for being weird with me’ was inspired by Fisher’s brand as a city - entrepreneurial, smart and vibrant. My hometown embraced me and all my quirks to help me feel confident in my career track as an artist and helped me feel like taking an entrepreneurial leap of faith could be worth it.” Three other murals are slated to be painted within the Fishers District in the coming months. Dan Toro from Laramie, Wyoming has already begun working on the Sun King Building. Also chosen to install murals are Indianapolis artists Megan Jefferson and Travis Neal. “Public art is important to build communities and local economies. It is walkable, outdoor, aesthetically pleasing, easy to implement, cost-effective, vibrant and socially-distanceappropriate,” Witsken says. “Fishers can be proud of these murals,” McGill adds. “Businesses that are willing to take the risk of providing public art should be applauded and celebrated. Shout out to Thompson Thrift for taking that leap.” 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atFishers.com

DREAMCHASERS HARVEY HARRINGTON’S POPULAR BASKETBALL CAMP RETURNS JULY 20-23 Writer / Seth Johnson Photography Provided by Freckles Photography
Growing up, Harvey Harrington has very fond memories of a Vacation Bible School that his aunt put on. “I think it was the best Vacation Bible School, bar none. We loved it,” Harrington says. “Even talking to my friends today, they’re like, ‘Remember the time we had Vacation Bible School?’” With this longstanding memory still fresh
in his mind, Harrington aims to create an equally noteworthy experience for Central Indiana youths with his DreamChasers Basketball Camp. “That’s fueled my camps,” Harrington says. “I was like, ‘How can I put something together where kids can be themselves?’” Set to take place from July 20-23 at Mt. Vernon Middle School, Harrington’s DreamChasers Basketball Camp is open to kids from first through eighth grades, no matter their previous basketball experience. JULY 2020
The brother of much-loved Indiana Pacers player Al Harrington, Harvey focuses on fundamentals like shooting, defense and ball handling with his camp, while hopefully teaching some lasting life lessons as well. Like the Vacation Bible School from his childhood, Harrington strives to make his DreamChasers Basketball Camp stand out. Camp participants can expect all sorts of fun activities, as well as a live DJ. “Every time we have a camp, we have a dance area with a DJ set up,” Harrington
says. “When kids are sitting out from doing drills and stuff, we don’t want them just sitting there. Every year, I think hard about how I can make this different and how I can make it the favorite camp of any kid out there, even if they don’t play basketball.” Harrington’s DreamChasers Basketball Camp also receives an occasional visitor from time to time, whether it’s Indiana Pacers mascot Boomer or a former NBA basketball player. “I get guys to just pop in,” Harrington says. “Rodney Carney came in and sat in. Al [his brother] came in and spoke. Bonzi Wells has dropped by. These are friends. They care about what I’m doing, and they just pop in.”
Harvey Harrington with his mom and site director Mona Lawton.
With this year in particular, Harrington also plans to implement new health-related policies due to the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, he says that the camp will not happen unless he feels absolutely comfortable that no one else’s health will be at risk. “I feel the same way about everybody else’s kids as I do my own,” Harrington says. “If I’m not going to put my kids in a situation, then I’m not going to put yours in a situation.” In addition to teaching kids about the game of basketball, Harrington aims to impact lives on a more personal level. “The response I’ve gotten back from this camp has been unbelievable,” he says. “I’ve had people write me personal letters saying, ‘Harvey Harrington. My son felt like he didn’t have a friend in the world, but now you’re his friend.’” While hooping may be at the heart of it all, DreamChasers Basketball Camp ultimately exists to change lives. “Everybody is not going to be able to play in the NBA, but that’s not what it’s about,” Harrington says. “Sports is about life. Sports instilled confidence and made me into who I am.” To learn more about DreamChasers Basketball Camp, visit DreamChasersBBall. com or find them on Facebook at Dream Chasers Basketball Indy. I believe my education and those experiences will combine to help me lead Today, the Fishers Health Department is this into something really unique. Right now, fully operational and providing a bevy of I’ve been busy meeting with community services to residents. Dr. Indy Lane, a Fishers stakeholders, organizations, our workers and resident, is the Chief Medical Director for the trying to develop our programming while Fishers Health Department. In June, Monica making sure we have our rules, regulations Heltz was officially named the Public Health and policies in place. My role is quite broad Director of the department. I’ve JULY 2020
That is where I fit in. I still work fulltime as a physician and administrator at Community Health Network, but Monica and I meet on a regular basis and talk about whatever issues arise with the Fishers Health Department.” When the Fishers Health Department started, the major function was to provide free, drive-thru testing for Fishers residents, which continues to run smoothly today. Testing is easily accessible for residents and follows a simple process. Those looking to get tested simply visit fishersrecovery.com/ testing and take the online assessment. Then an appointment can be scheduled with an arrival time to the drive-thru testing site located at 3 Municipal Dr. Residents drive up, have the nasal swab test done, leave and test results become available within three business days. The easy access and quick drive-thru availability have made the testing run efficiently. For those who have seen the, seemingly painful, nasal swab tests where the swab is going quite far up the nose, Dr. Lane says not to worry because the Fishers COVID-19 testing is a simple and much less uncomfortable nasal swab.
As of June 16, 3.12% of Fishers (2,918 people) have been tested for COVID-19 with just 48 positive results. Although a small spike was detected in June, the overall results have been encouraging and such a spike could have occurred with more residents coming out to be tested. In terms of testing, the long-term goal for the Fishers Health Department is that all residents eventually get tested at some point. Unlike many county or state
“I WANT TO COMMEND MAYOR FADNESS AND HIS INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND BOLDNESS TO DECIDE THAT THIS IS SOMETHING IMPORTANT FOR OUR CITY.” - DR. INDY LANE -
“Our testing is a simple swab in both nostrils,” Dr. Lane says. “It is not painful and it is quick. It is a super easy process. You COVID-19 testing sites, Fishers does not don’t even have to get out of your car.” require residents to meet certain criteria, such as having symptoms, to get a test done. The testing is also available for Fishers Heltz is encouraging any and all residents to businesses and their employees. be tested.
“I would like to see an even bigger response in terms of testing,” Heltz says. “If you are just worried, want peace of mind or maybe you want to go visit a grandparent soon, then please come by and get tested. If there is anyone on the fence about getting tested, I would encourage them to do it.” Antibody testing is also becoming more available to the public. While the Fishers Health Department doesn’t currently provide that testing, Riverview Health’s new Fishers Urgent Care facility announced in June that they are now providing the antibody testing. “The antibody testing suggests that, if you are positive, you’ve had exposure to [the coronavirus],” Dr. Lane says. “What we don’t know for sure yet is if that translates into immunity. That is the difficulty. There is a lot we are still learning about it.” Mayor Fadness said in a statement back in April that, “The launch of the Fishers Health Department goes beyond a localized approach to COVID-19 but extends into the future where we can better support our community.” The COVID-19 testing is just one piece of the department’s responsibilities and is, of course, one of the main functions right now. The concept of a town or city having its own health department is still new. According to in.gov, Fishers is only the third city in the state of Indiana to implement its own health department. In most states, including Indiana, county health departments are the standard.
JULY 2020
So, what all does the Fishers Health Department entail? Beyond the testing, the health department also serves residents through vital records, immunizations, food and safety permitting, swimming pools, mosquito and rodent control, private water well and septic systems. The Fishers Health Department website details a full, bullet-point list of all that the department manages. So, is the Fishers Health Department crucial for the community? Both Dr. Lane and Heltz say yes. “We are in the middle of a pandemic, which might actually seem like a bad time to start a health department,” Heltz says. “However, it also highlights the importance of integrating public health into a lot of other policies. Our nation’s public health center was not prepared for this. Having a bit more control over our local situation can help our residents and our local businesses. It is a bold move and certainly not one that is seen very often. I believe it offers an opportunity to
create something unique and important that is tailored to the needs of the Fishers community.” “I want to commend Mayor Fadness and his innovative ideas and boldness to decide that this is something important for our city,” Dr. Lane adds. “As it relates to COVID-19, I also believe this department will set us up to vaccinate Fishers residents once there is a vaccine. My hope is that Monica and I can help identify what everybody in Fishers needs. This is a great city. It is exciting to be a part of something new and something, hopefully, that we can create as a model for other cities.” With some cities again seeing spikes in COVID-19, a general consensus, especially seen and heard on some national news outlets, is that a “second-wave” of COVID-19 could be on the horizon. Dr. Lane says we can’t and won’t know for sure until that happens, but she encourages residents to stick to the guidelines that have been laid out since Indiana began reopening.
“We want to encourage people to still wear a mask when they are out in public and do the appropriate social distancing,” Dr. Lane says. “Obviously, protesting, for example, is an important right that we have. But, if you are doing that, we recommend that you still wear a mask and distance as much as possible so we can keep COVID-19 numbers down and keep people safe. “We’ve talked about the importance of handwashing from the beginning and that really can reduce the risk of infection. We don’t know yet if the fall or winter months will impact what we see in terms of infection rates. But it is important that everyone exercise caution, wear masks out in public. If you have symptoms, please get tested. Protect your children and make sure they are washing their hands, too. I know it is difficult sometimes with children, especially social distancing, but it is to keep everyone safe.” For more information on the Fishers Health Department, visit them online at fishersrecovery.com/health-department.

Brooks School Park Art Wall Inspires Fishers Community Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Local artist Travis Neal wants everyone to know “we are all in this together.” It’s a message he likes so much he painted it on the new Fishers Art Wall at Brooks School Park.
“I (painted it) when I was on site the weekend of May 30 and 31,” Neal says. “The 40 by 5 wall took about 16 hours, from start to finish.” It was a job Neal was personally selected for. “Marissa Deckert of the Fishers Parks Department contacted me about the JULY 2020
project,” Neal says. “They were looking for someone to create the inaugural mural for their new art wall. As for the concept, their only request was that the hashtag be included in the design somehow, but the rest was left to me. I decided to make that message the primary focus and build the rest of the design around that message.”
I was mostly just honored to be the first artist featured on the art wall. Neal is pleased with his work. “I always try to incorporate some element of depth and perspective into my walls, with some parts drifting away, while others jump right out at you,” Neal says. “I also wanted this wall to grab people’s attention, so I used a lot of vivid colors and hard lines to help make that happen.” Neal is happy he was chosen to paint the park wall. “I was mostly just honored to be the first artist featured on the art wall,” Neal says. “2020 has not been a great year, no doubt about that. At the time the wall was commissioned and designed, this was simply a message about recovery in the struggle with COVID 19. Now we are seeing even more challenges, so I think it puts the piece into a larger context and gives a deeper meaning of optimism, hope and togetherness.” Neal has already had positive feedback from the public for his artwork. “The wall has barely been completed a week, and the response has already been incredible,” he says. “It seems to have really struck a chord. I didn’t realize the enthusiasm people would have for this message. It’s an amazing feeling to have one of my walls speak to so many people on that level.” Neal is currently busy with numerous art projects. “I’ve been an artist all my life but found JULY 2020
my true passion of large-scale work right after my wife and I moved into our Broad Ripple home,” Neal says. “I painted my first mural, a 12-inch reproduction of Van Gogh’s Starry Night, as a tribute to my mother, and I have been painting murals ever since. For the ‘Monday through Friday gig,’ I manage a sign shop in Carmel (Signarama). It works out well, giving me a day-to-day exercise in creativity and leaving my nights and weekends for my other artistic endeavors.” One of those endeavors was his traffic control box, Aquarium Surprise, at Pocket Park, 8700 E. 116th St. in Fishers. “I was also one of the four artists chosen to paint murals around the new development, Fishers District, on 116th Street,” Neal says. “That will be my next project, and I expect to begin work soon. It took local artist Travis Neal 16 hours to complete the Brooks School Park project.

The Road to Indy ELY NAVARRO HAS HIS SIGHTS SET ON THE FINISH LINE TO INDYCAR Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Elysiah Navarro is on the road to IndyCar, and he isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The Hamilton Southeastern High School student is barely legal to drive a car, but he has dreams of one day racing in the Indy 500. So far, Navarro is on the fast track to that dream. Last December, Navarro took first place in the Second Annual Lucas Oil School of Racing Scholarship Shootout at Sebring International Raceway in Florida, besting a pool of 26 other drivers. The coveted
scholarship guarantees him a fully paid entry into the 2020 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series, which had a delayed start in June, due to COVID-19, with races continuing throughout this summer and into the fall. The entry into the 2020 Lucas Oil Formula Race Series is a giant step toward Navarro’s goal of taking the wheel in IndyCar. “I’m very excited,” he says. “I’ve written down my goals for this year, and I read them every day. I want to get a podium in every race of the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series, with the ultimate goal of winning the championship for that series JULY 2020
and be a contender and win the Team USA Scholarship for racing. I know I am capable of doing it.” Probably the most impressive part of Navarro’s victory at the Scholarship Shootout is the fact that it was only the second time he had gotten behind the wheel of a Formula Car. The karts Navarro has been racing typically top out at around 72 miles per hour. The Formula cars hit speeds of more than 120 miles per hour. Many of the drivers Navarro was pitted against had also raced a series in Formula

before and already had a good feel of how to drive the cars. Ages of the drivers ranged from 12 to 25 years old, with Navarro taking home the win at just 15 years old. “We had the two-day school event to learn how to drive the cars,” Navarro says. “It was only my second time driving one, though. They are very different from karts. The aerodynamics and engine are all different. It is like a training car, a slower version of IndyCar. Coming in, many of the people I competed against had driven in this series before and driven these cars. So, when they
called my name as the winner, I couldn’t believe it.” Navarro’s passion for racing started at a young age. His father, Josh, raced motorcycles. Ely wanted to follow his dad’s footsteps, but his parents felt that it was far too dangerous. Around seven years old, Josh got Ely and his sister a go-kart. But it sat for almost three years because of a fear he had to drive it, mainly because of the noise with how loud the karts are. But, at 10 years old, Ely got over his fear and started racing in 2014. As Navarro started winning and earning honors like Rookie of the Year at Michiana Raceway Park in Southbend, he realized that this hobby was a full-on passion. So, the Navarro family relocated to the Indianapolis area in 2017, knowing that it was the place their son would need to be to chase his dreams. Along the way, Ely says his family has been as supportive as any teenager could hope for. “They have really influenced me a lot and their support is everything,” he says. “I want to learn how to get better and they want to see me reach my dreams. My dad has no background in mechanics. He and I have learned all of this along the way. From when JULY 2020
I first started in a junk kart, we just showed up and I drove. We have fun. That is really what it is about.” “Michelle and I are extremely proud of Ely, and all our children,” Josh says. “We teach them to have fun, work hard and do your best. Our primary goal is for each of them to grow up living and working their dream job, but they must have the passion and pour their heart and soul into those dreams. If they focus on the present moment and have fun, the happiness in their success will follow. As parents, we have structured our lives to help support their dreams as long as they are enjoying themselves.” Over the years, Navarro has gained several crucial mentors in the race world, including Jimmy Simpson — a successful kart racer who has also competed in Indy Lights & USAC Midget National Championship as well as Formula Atlantic — and former IndyCar driver Mark Dismore owner of
I WANT TO WIN THE INDY 500 AND THE INDYCAR CHAMPIONSHIP, MULTIPLE TIMES, AND PROVE THAT I AM A GREAT DRIVER. New Castle Motorsports Speedway. Today, Navarro continues races and practices weekly in New Castle. “They have all helped me out a lot and really helped me be a better driver,” Navarro says. “Alexander Rossi is someone I look up to a lot, too. I want to do what he did and win the Indy 500 on my first try.” In the long term, Navarro’s goal is also to gain more sponsorships. The sponsorship world can be tough, but with the advent of social media in the last decade, the possibilities are there. One way to accomplish that though is to simply keep winning and that continues to be the main focus for Navarro. “They say the money and sponsorships are out there,” Michelle says. “It is just a matter of making connections with people and winning enough races to get noticed.” Overall, Navarro wants to look back on his journey and know that he has left nothing on the table. He continues to put forth full effort on his road to Indy, and he hopes to inspire other young, would-be drivers as well. “I want to leave a big footprint in the motorsports world,” he says. “I want to win the Indy 500 and the IndyCar Championship, multiple times, and prove that I am a great driver. I also want to show other kids that you don’t have to already be in the motorsports industry to do this. If you work hard, you can do it, if you really want to.” For more information about Ely’s journey, or to find sponsorship opportunities, visit elymotorsports.com. JULY 2020

Patient-Centered Care Because Central Indiana Orthopedics is physician-owned and physician-managed, the doctors are able to make their own local, hands-on decisions about caring for their patients rather than having care dictated by a corporation. “My interest in medicine came from my dad who was a family doctor in a small town. I think his patients really loved him,” Dr. Kay says. “I wanted to be like that, and I think we strive to do that here at the whole practice.” Experience personalized, expert care in one convenient location. Grab a Scoop! JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH Writer / Abigail Hake
I remember going out every Sunday with my grandparents for dinner and afterward enjoying a special treat. We’d head over to Baskin Robbins and pick one (or two) of the 32 flavors to enjoy as a family. Ice cream is an American tradition and something that is always in our freezers. It’s a national staple, especially during those summer months, which is why July is the perfect time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month.
The Old Custard Stand near 141st and St. Rd. 37 is a drive-thru oasis for commuters and locals alike.
In 1984, a Senator from Kentucky introduced a resolution to proclaim the month of July 1984 National Ice Cream Month. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law that same year and the rest is history! While the bill only specified July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month, the tradition carries on all these years later. Ice cream itself has no known inventor, but it’s said that as far back as 618697AD in China, an ice cream-like food was enjoyed. The first dish is said to be made of flour, buffalo milk and camphor. Not quite the ice cream we know today, but it’s fun to think that even way back when, people were looking for a refreshing frozen treat! Even Alexander the Great is said to have enjoyed snow flavored with honey and nectar. Culinary folks though do point to Naples as the birthplace of the first ice cream. Americans have a rich history with ice cream. The first mention of ice cream in the US was in a letter in 1744. Then, it’s said, that George Washington spent $200 for ice cream in the summer of 1790. That’s something like $5,500 today - Can you imagine? Even Thomas Jefferson made his own ice cream recipe which is said to be the oldest known ice cream recipe here in the states. FUN FACTS ABOUT ICE CREAM: • First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the 1813 Inaugural Ball • Vanilla is the most popular flavor • It takes about 50 licks to finish one ice cream cone JULY 2020
• The U.S. is the largest producer of ice cream • A Dreyer’s Ice Cream tester actually insured his tongue for $1M • In 1920, Harry Burt put the first ice cream truck on the streets SO HOW CAN YOU CELEBRATE? With ice cream of course! Enjoy this cold, delicious treat with friends and family. Head to your local ice cream shop and grab a scoop! Maybe even try a few different and unique flavors before you settle on your tried and true favorite! You could also host a fun ice cream themed party. Have an “I Scream for Ice Cream” bar where everyone can make their own amazing concoction!. Make sure to have plenty of toppings including things like pretzels, M&M’S, fruits, sprinkles and nuts! You can also provide all different types of cones and even cute little bowls for your guests to create in. Maybe even offer fun decorations like wands, cupcake toppers and mini umbrellas. Think outside the box and take photos of everyone’s custom treats. Then have prizes for most creative, best looking and most daring. Your guests are sure to enjoy this fun event!
CRAVE Ice Cream Social is a popular spot during the busy boating season at the Geist Marina.
Or, if you are feeling ambitious, try your hand at making your own ice cream. Here’s a really easy recipe you can make at home in a bag. All you need is half & half (1 cup), sugar (2 tbsp), vanilla extract (½ tsp), ice (3 cups), salt (⅓ cup), and two plastic bags (one large and one small). Put the cream, sugar, and flavor inside the smaller bag and push out all the extra air. Put the ice and salt in the bigger bag and then add the small bag with ingredients. Lock well and shake for 7-10 minutes until the ingredients have hardened. Once it’s done, you can let it set a little more in the freezer while you make homemade chocolate chip cookies to create your own homemade ice cream sandwiches! There are lots of fun ways to celebrate this month, but, if in the end, you’d rather just try a different kind of ice cream each day of the month of July, we get it. Because remember, we all scream for ice cream!
For over 20 years, Sundae’s Homemade Ice Cream & Coffee has been a local favorite with their fresh homemade frozen treats.

EXPERTS PREDICT STUDENTS COULD RETURN TO SCHOOL A FULL GRADE LEVEL BEHIND
A fast, easy way to know if your child’s learning skills are behind, and what you can do to help advance them NOW The ‘summer slide’ (a.k.a. the ‘summer setback’) refers to students’ decline in reading, math, and other academic skills over the typical two months of summer, when school is not in session. But because the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered thousands of schools much earlier than usual, some learners will lose as much as five months of live classroom instruction. Experts predict this extreme absence could have a devastating effect on academic achievement for America’s 55.1 million students. In one study,* experts predict students returning to school this fall could display:
is comprehensive, affordable, and as parents tell us, clearly identifies if and how much learning skill loss their child has experienced.” The test pinpoints which of the brain’s core learning skills—like memory, attention, processing speed, and more—are on-point, and which skills need strengthening. Following the Assessment,
• A 50% loss in math skills
families can choose to enroll
• A 30% loss in reading skills

Haleigh DeVoe was in preschool when she first gave gymnastics a try, immediately gravitating to tumbling and floor routines. “My mom said, ‘Maybe we should put you in cheerleading,’ and I’ve loved it ever since,” DeVoe says. Though she briefly quit cheer when she was in kindergarten because she was frustrated that she couldn’t do a back walkover, she have the potential to win a national title,” soon missed the sport and returned to it as a says DeVoe, who got her wish when she won first-grader. UCA Nationals in 2007 when she was in second grade. DeVoe trained most of her preteen and teen years at Indiana Elite Gymnastics in “After that, I was hooked and in it for the long Noblesville, the largest cheer and tumbling haul,” says DeVoe, who won UCA Nationals gym in Indiana. She chose Indiana Elite again in 2013 when she was a freshman in because she was looking for a more high school. As a sophomore, DeVoe gave competitive atmosphere, and they had high school cheer a try when she cheered for a great reputation for producing highly Hamilton Southeastern (HSE). competitive athletes. “I wanted to go somewhere where I would

cheerleading at the same time and since I’m competitive, I chose competitive cheer because I wanted to compete year-round,” DeVoe says. Competition cheer has competitions every few weeks. And that’s precisely how DeVoe improved her skill set as she learned flipping and inversion skills. Though she adored cheerleading, she had no plans to continue doing it in college. She changed her mind, however, and freshman year at Indiana University she
tried out and made the Crimson all-girls team, a squad that incorporates football, basketball and competition. “It was the best experience of my life,” says DeVoe, noting that she and her Hoosier teammates practiced for 2.5-plus hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, in addition to mandatory weightlifting on Mondays and Wednesdays. Games on Friday and Saturday meant that every day she was working out. “That’s why some days my legs felt like Jello,” DeVoe says. Her freshman year at IU was wildly exciting as the university won the national cheerleading title. The following morning, DeVoe tried out for and landed a spot on Team USA, a collection of 32 of the best cheerleaders from around the country. After making Team USA, the girls don’t see one another again until two weeks before the world competition. At that point, they get together for brutally long practices — two-adays, sometimes three-a-days. “I’ve never practiced so much in my life,” DeVoe says. In 2017, her team won Gold at the International Cheer Union (ICU) World Cheerleading Championships (the cheerleading version of the Olympics). No doubt about it — she was on top of the world and at the top of her game. Though she was having a blast, was also tired and on the verge of burnout. Plus, she felt she needed to focus on her studies to ensure she kept her grades up. Therefore, DeVoe chose to not try out for the cheer team her sophomore year. Prior to her junior year, however, her coach and program directors both asked her to go out for the team again. Though she was enjoying having downtime, the year off brought a new perspective as she realized how much she appreciated being a part of something bigger than herself. “I missed being around like-minded 38 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atFishers.com
individuals with the same attitude and goals,” she says.
truly grew to love game day cheer.”
The year off also gave her a renewed appreciation for performing in front of a crowd.
DeVoe, who graduated in May with a degree in exercise science, plans to attend graduate school as she’s interested in pursuing a career in pediatric physical therapy.
“I realized how lucky I was to be able to wear Indiana across my chest and cheer on game day in Assembly Hall & Memorial Stadium,” she says. “All these little girls would come up to me asking for pictures. I
“I love helping people, and I want a job where I feel like I have a purpose,” DeVoe says. “That’s what cheerleading has been for me — the opportunity to represent my university.”
Ultimately, DeVoe made the USA cheerleading squad three times during her collegiate career and was set to compete for another Gold at the ICU Worlds at the end of April 2020. Sadly, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, but DeVoe is thrilled with how her cheer career evolved through the years. “Cheer is something I enjoy and am blessed to be good at,” DeVoe says.

For many restaurants, the coronavirus pandemic has created some very difficult hurdles. In the case of Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar in Fortville, however, these hurdles were made more manageable, thanks in large part to the restaurant’s faithful patrons. “We did pretty good during COVID-19, making carryout and delivery,” says Cortona’s owner Simone Lucarini. “Now, we’re back on track. We can’t wait to open at 100% capacity on July 4.” Located at 209 S. Main Street in the heart of Fortville, Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar serves up authentic Italian food, with
dishes inspired by Lucarini’s hometown of Cortona in Tuscany, Italy. In staying true to this regional Italian theme, Cortona’s also carries a myriad of Italian wines, including many that are specifically from the Tuscany region of Italy. Started back in December 2018, Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar is a lifelong achievement for Lucarini, who’s spent much of his life in the kitchen. “I was born and raised in Cortona, in Tuscany, and I started to cook when I was 16 or 17, looking at my mom and grandma and how they used to cook,” Lucarini says. “My grandma passed away, so my mom kept the tradition alive. And then, it was my time.” 40 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atFishers.com
The menu at Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar reflects Lucarini’s authentic Italian roots. Customers won’t find items like spaghetti and meatballs or fettuccine alfredo on the menu. Instead, Cortona’s offers uniquely crafted Italian dishes inspired by Lucarini’s hometown. Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar serves up homemade pasta daily. Entrees typically feature pasta paired with a handcrafted, specialty sauce and either veal, chicken breast or seafood. When asked about standouts on the menu, Lucarini lists off several. “We have Tortellacci, which is tortellini but bigger,” he says. “They’re filled with ground veal and it comes with a bourbon truffle sauce. We also have the Crab Ravioli,
and that comes with a cherry bourbon red pepper sauce.” When scouting out a location for his restaurant, Lucarini says he was drawn to the small-town feel of Fortville. So far, he’s been rewarded for his decision to start a fine dining establishment in the area. “We were looking for a nice, up-and-
coming area — a village town,” Lucarini says. “We found Fortville, and now we’re here. We’re happy with this community, the Fishers community, and Geist. The Geist community especially has been a big boost for us. Fishers as well.” Going forward, Lucarini hopes to continue on his successes with Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar.

Cortona’s Italian Cuisine & Wine Bar offers DOP products that are locally grown and packaged in Italy, giving customers a truly authentic experience. Cortona’s also supports local businesses in the area such as Sunrise Bakery, 2Morrow’s Farms, Becker Farms and Piazza Produce. Owner Simone Lucarini grew up in the small town of Cortona, Italy. He alongside his partner and wife, Elizabeth Lucarini, bring a deep understanding of Italian culinary traditions and delicious family recipes. Cooking Italian means knowing the Italian culinary traditions and the most tasty and fresh ingredients. It is not just a quick trip to Italy or a hasty search on google. Traditions are only passable – and these traditions are what we love to share.

Nate Haugh loves sweet stuff, and he is doing his best to make sure the Fishers community can satisfy cravings for custom doughnuts, homemade ice cream and delicious coffee beverages . When Ohana Donuts & Ice Cream opened in February on Brooks School Road, word quickly spread about the unique customer experience the shop provides. Now, through online ordering for curbside service, carryout, and delivery services such as Uber Eats, customers of all ages can design a doughnut of their choosing or select ice cream treats to be enjoyed at home.
For each doughnut purchased, customers can choose one of the seven icings available. The next step is to select from 14 toppings, and the creation is then completed with one of five drizzle options. Savvy parents can turn the experience into a delicious math probability problem. “I’ve been looking for a business to start for the last 15 years,” Haugh says. “My wife Katy, our three children and I have wonderful memories of vacationing in Hawaii, and ohana means family in Hawaiian. I love sweets and doughnuts are my favorite food. They are great in the morning, but I wanted an all-day concept. Ice cream is also a favorite of mine, so I decided to combine the two. Surprisingly, when people come for ice 42 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atFishers.com
cream, they often end up taking doughnuts home for the next day.” Products sold by Ohana Donuts & Ice Cream are made in Indiana. The doughnuts are baked onsite, and the ice cream is sourced from Sundae’s Homemade Ice Cream in Indianapolis. The shop’s coffee beans are processed in small batches by locally-based Roti Coffee Roasters. The shop also offers specialty popcorns, chocolate covered peanuts, and caramels from Good’s Candy Shop in Anderson. Cups and bracelets are available from Warsaw-based company MudLOVE. “People rave about the coffee, and some customers come just for a great cup of
coffee,” Haugh says. “Of all the espresso-based beverages, caramel macchiato is the favorite. One of the biggest surprises is that I had to buy a second milkshake mixer. Any flavor of our ice cream can be made into a milkshake, and people even combine two flavors. The most popular ice cream flavors are Lemon Oreo and Graham Central Station.” A full list of doughnut options, coffee and tea beverages, and ice cream treats can be found on the shop’s official website. E-gift cards are also available for purchase, and can make great gifts for friends and family members. Orders for curbside service can also be submitted via the store website. “We are all about families, and we hope to share the spirit of Ohana with Fishers and the surrounding community,” Haugh says. Ohana Donuts & Ice Cream is located at 11640 Brooks School Road, Suite 100 in Fishers. Call 317-288-0922 for carry-out, and visit OhanaIndy. com to submit an order for curbside pickup.

A Sip of Paradise Tropical Smoothie Café Debuts Tasty Drinks & Sandwiches at The Yard Writer / Seth Johnson Photographer / Eli Beaverson
local franchisee James Volpert, with the first being located at The Bridges in Carmel.
When dreaming of days on the beach, Central Indiana may not be the first place that comes to mind. Take a step into Fishers’ new Tropical Smoothie Café, however, and you may just find a slice of paradise.
Back in its early days, the Tropical Smoothie brand simply served smoothies at a beachside shop in Destin, Fla. In 1997, however, the first Tropical Smoothie Café opened in Tallahassee, Fla., and the rest was history.
Located at 11545 IKEA Way Ste. 620, the new Tropical Smoothie Café location brings all the franchise’s delicious sandwiches and smoothies to The Yard at Fishers District. Now with hundreds of locations across the U.S., this Fishers franchise marks the second Central Indiana location opened by
“About one-seventh of the 750 stores are now up in Michigan, so it’s even doing pretty well in a colder climate than Indianapolis,” Volpert says. “Even the CEO was kind of astonished with how well they’ve done up in Michigan.” 44 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JULY 2020 / atFishers.com
With the Fishers location marking his second franchise in Central Indiana, Volpert has already witnessed firsthand how much old and new customers alike enjoy the Tropical Smoothie Café brand. “There’s kind of a cult following,” he says. “People who have experienced it in other
states have immediately embraced us. And people that have come in who know nothing about us have enjoyed the smoothies and the food and returned again and again.” When it comes to the Tropical Smoothie Café menu, Volpert says a popular smoothie option is the Detox Island Green, which blends together spinach, kale, mango, pineapple, banana and fresh ginger. “It’s like a salad in a cup, and you don’t know that you’re drinking a salad,” Volpert says. “It tastes so good even though you’ve got kale and spinach in there. It’s been a very popular item.” Owner James Volpert
As for the food, Volpert says their flatbreads and quesadillas are popular, as well as their chicken Caprese and chicken jerk sandwiches. “The food has a tropical flair to it,” Volpert says. “You’ve always got a spice or something on it that makes it stand out.” From the beginning, The Yard was a targeted location for Tropical Smoothie Café.
“The vibe of The Yard is tremendous.”
“Our real estate team worked with Thompson Thrift and basically, they said, ‘We’ve gotta be at The Yard,’” he says. “It’s kind of like the crown jewel of Fishers like the Palladium is to Carmel.” With fellow business neighbors like the Hyatt Place hotel and St. Elmo’s 1933 Lounge, Volpert couldn’t be more excited about having this Tropical Smoothie Café franchise located in The Yard. “The vibe of The Yard is tremendous,” Volpert says. “I have met a lot of the owners of the stores, and the synergy has been great. It’s a destination place with all the restaurants and bars.” Tropical Smoothie Café’s Fishers store is located at 11545 IKEA Way Ste. 620.
