FISHERS GIRL IS DANCING AGAIN AFTER 7 SURGERIES & 4-YEAR BATTLE WITH RARE KIDNEY DISEASE Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger Photographer / Amy Payne
Imagine four years of your childhood spent at hospitals and doctors’ offices, missing out on school, playing with your friends and doing all the fun things your friends are doing. Now imagine getting progressively sicker as you wait for doctors to determine a diagnosis. That was the reality for one brave, little nine-year-old Lydia Check of Fishers. Though, to call her brave would be an extreme understatement. Lydia’s journey began in 2014 at age four.
That summer she became sick, tired and weak. Visits to the family doctor failed to produce answers. By winter, her weight loss was so severe, it became clear to her parents that they needed to seek the help of specialists. A visit to the gastroenterologist in early 2015 produced a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, because of evidence of bleeding ulcers in her stomach and colon. By fall 2015, monthly blood tests had revealed there was a deeper issue causing Lydia’s illness. Doctors suspected kidney disease, and a Labor Day weekend stay at Riley gave 6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019 / atFishers.com
the family the answers they needed. After a biopsy surgery, Lydia was officially diagnosed with nephronophthisis, a genetic kidney disease leading to renal failure. The disease meant irreversible scarring and damage to the kidneys, and the only solution would be a kidney transplant. “It was such a relief to have a diagnosis,” says Paula Check, Lydia’s mom, “But, we knew we had a long road ahead of us.” While Lydia’s parents fought through the red tape of getting insurance approval
for the transplant, doctors addressed the urgent issue of dehydration and medication by placing a GI tube directly to her stomach to deliver critical fluids and medications. Finally, in 2017, Lydia’s insurance approved her for placement on the national transplant list. During that time, Lydia did her best to carry on as any other second grader would. She went to school as much as she could and usually missed only one day of school a week. Lydia wanted to play on the playground like her other classmates, but it was difficult. “My friends were afraid I was too sick to play,” she says. “And I was a little afraid to play on some of the equipment because I might get hurt.” The Checks got a call in November that a kidney had been found for Lydia. Unfortunately, she developed a fever along with vomiting, signaling that her immune system was too weak to withstand the transplant surgery.
The summer of 2018 presented more challenges. Lydia became weaker. At the end of the summer, her labs revealed that she needed to be admitted to the hospital overnight for medications. Doctors advised the Checks that Lydia would need to start dialysis. What should’ve been a routine process got complicated. Lydia underwent surgery to insert a Hemo Dialysis port. The surgery caused her to lose a lot of blood, and she needed a blood transfusion. Then, after a couple of days, doctors discovered a problem with her central line, requiring yet another surgery to remove it and replace it with a new one. With that, Lydia began dialysis three days a week for four hours and proceeded to start third grade. Four years into the journey, the Check’s finally got the miracle they were praying for. They had just returned home from dialysis, and Riley Children’s Hospital called with the news that a kidney match had been found. On September 1, 2018, Lydia underwent successful kidney transplant surgery.
The norm to the family meant Paula not being able to remain on full-time status at work so that she could have the flexibility to be home with Lydia as needed. She and Lydia’s dad, David, often traded days to take off work.
In all, Lydia endured seven surgeries before embarking on the road to recovery. She returned full-time to school in January 2019 and returned to dancing at her favorite dance studio where she’d attended since “When we got the news, we felt every emotion,” Paula says. “We laughed, we cried, age four. Now, at nine years old, Lydia was eligible to join the hip-hop class. The class and we were scared.” was already eight weeks into rehearsals for the spring recital, but Lydia joined them and An eight-and-one-half-year-old Lydia, so caught up quickly. young to process the reality of what was about to happen, tried to be strong. “She was delighted to be able to participate in the recital in May,” Paula says. “It still makes me sad that someone lost their life and I can live,” Lydia says. “But Though Lydia’s recovery is mostly when I was the saddest and scared, I tried to make myself feel better by listening to my complete now, she still has a bit to go before hitting that milestone one-year favorite songs by Taylor Swift and wrap up mark in September. The Check family isn’t just looking forward to the one-year milestone, they’re waiting to hear some very exciting news. “We’re hoping to be approved for a Make a Wish trip to Paris or to meet Lydia’s idol, Taylor Swift,” Paula says. As soon as Lydia completes her essay, they’ll submit the paperwork. The family is unsure how soon they would find out if Lydia’s wish is approved.
Lydia paid it forward by being a mentor to another Riley child with kidney disease. “She helped him get through his struggles and now he’s doing much better,” Paula says. Lydia hopes to become involved with mentoring other Riley Kids by sharing her experience.
“WE CAN’T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE STAFF AT RILEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL.”
With the bulk of the challenges behind them, the Checks are trying to focus on being grateful for the things that helped them get through the tough times. “We can’t say enough about the staff at Riley Children’s Hospital,” Paula says. “All of their support, as well as their program for Lydia to receive get-well cards and wishes, got us through those rough days. We relied on a lot of prayer, music, meditation and lots of advice from others on how to cope.”

For Larry Harnish, a good cigar is more than just something to smoke. For him, a cigar is a physical representation of celebration, relaxation and community — a symbol of unity and triumph for all to enjoy and something he has loved for much of his adult life. It was this belief in what a cigar means and a longtime interest in the culture that surrounds them that led Harnish to open his own cigar shop. Maduro on Main, Harnish’s cigar shop, recently opened in March and occupies a space in the heart of Fortville to serve the community by providing a unique business unlike anything else nearby. After years of working in a variety of different professional fields, Harnish decided it was time to step into the world of entrepreneurship and open his own business doing something he loved.
“A cigar makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something,” Harnish says. “When champions win the Super Bowl or hoist the NBA trophy, they smoke cigars, when you get married you have cigars, at the birth of a child, you pass out cigars. Those are all good moments that you like to share, and I want to share that feeling to those that aren’t familiar with cigars. My shop is a little different than most cigar shops. When people think of cigar shops they think of a smoky place or white tile floors with cigarettes on the wall, and this isn’t like that. It’s more of a lifestyle setting and a relaxing type of environment.” While there are other cigar shops in Indianapolis, Indiana as a whole has a limited number of cigar shops, and Harnish hopes that his shop is able to work in collaboration with other shops in the area
to help grow cigar popularity in Indy, as well as provide a new option for those looking for quality cigars on the Northeast side. Each store has its own set of unique and distinguishing characteristics, and Maduro on Main finds its identity through a welcoming atmosphere, broad selection of cigars and an in-store inventory that stretches beyond just cigars and into apparel, smoking accessories and even the occasional “Cigars 101” class. Going forward, Harnish hopes to expand the shop with a smoking patio while continuing to serve the Fortville community. “I want to have a place that’s comfortable and becomes a destination for cigar shoppers on the Northeast side of town who maybe don’t want to fight the Indianapolis traffic, and I’ve tapped into that I think,” Harnish adds. Maduro on Main is located at 11 S Main St in downtown Fortville. The shop is open Tuesday through Sunday for those seeking a unique atmosphere and a quality cigar. For more information, call 317-505-9216 or visit them online at MaduroOnMain.com.

Oak & Ivy Boutique is a women’s clothing store in Fishers, Indiana. Owner Kim Kwiatkowski first dipped her toes into the world of retail when she was in college. In 2015, she opened Oak & Ivy Boutique, and just one year later, the store was awarded as one of “Indy’s Best New Boutiques” in the Indianapolis Monthly.
“[Receiving the award] was truly an honor,” Kwiatkowski says. “I was so excited to see that my customers loved having a fun, local place to shop from. It encouraged me to reopen my doors.”
“We found the location in the Spark Apartments building, and it really just seemed to be a good fit for us,” Kwiatkowski says. “I love the downtown feel of the growing area.”
Kwiatkowski’s site was once torn down for renovation leaving her without a permanent location for about two years, running her store online.
According to Kwiatkowski, many small local businesses are opening recently, and she believes it makes the Nickel Plate District more of a destination, rather than a one-stop location. You can park your car and have

coffee, lunch or dinner, go shopping, see a concert or visit the farmers’ market, all in one area. Kwiatkowski believes in quality, classic pieces that stand the test of time, as well as mixing in some trendy pieces. She strives to ensure that her customers are able to enjoy unique finds at affordable prices. The boutique dream began when Kwiatkowski and a friend started out together doing trunk shows and pop-up events. For more than 20 years now, Kwiatkowski has been a hair stylist. Currently, she divides her time between the hair salon and boutique, spending three days a week at each. She has always had her passion for beauty and fashion-related things, which is why she made the decision to incorporate fashion into her business life.
“I love finding unique pieces and helping others evolve their personal style,” Kwiatkowski adds. “I believe everyone already has a sense of what makes them feel good about themselves. I would only want to help someone add fashion pieces that help compliment their style.” According to Kwiatkowski, the love of beauty and fashion, as well as the passion to want to help others feel good about themselves, is what sets Oak & Ivy Boutique apart in the saturated retail market. “I started this for a love of what I do and a need to be able to provide for
my family and help put my kids into college,” Kwiatkowski says. “I am a small business that still very much runs as a small business. My goal is not to build a franchise of stores but only to develop this one into the best one it can be. I just want to love what I do, provide for my family and make sure that when someone does come into my store, it gives them a good feeling and makes them want to come back.” Oak & Ivy Boutique is located at 8800 North Street in Fishers. You can visit them online at oakandivyboutique.com or give them a call at 317-507-3709 for more information.

Steve Cage’s collection includes more than 50 luxury, racing and muscle cars.
Behind the Wheel of Local Entrepreneur Steve Cage’s Private Car Collection Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Michael Durr
Steve Cage has been a car aficionado pretty much his entire life. In 1980, Cage garnered success in creating a business that looked for defects in automobiles. The company was wildly successful. “Cars were built very poorly in the 80s,” Cage says. “I had the opportunity, back then, to work with all the big automotive
manufacturers. We provided a service that helped stop the interruption of defects that suppliers might make. Unfortunately, we did find problems through that and ended up being the largest company in the world providing that service.”
In 2017, Cage sold his business yet again.
Cage sold the company in 2004, but five years later, the company he sold it to went out of business. So, in 2009, Cage started another company providing the same service, Stratosphere Quality. His love for cars and the automotive industry only continued to grow throughout his journey.
Cage’s love for cars began well before he started his businesses. It was his father’s career path that initially sparked his interest in cars as a kid.
AUGUST 2019
“We sold it to a great company out of Japan,” he says. “They are doing wonderfully and we are happy for them. Throughout all those years, I started collecting cars.”
“When I was growing up, my dad was a Chrysler executive,” Cage says. “He helped
develop some of their engines back in the day. We were fortunate to have about two new cars every year in high school and college growing up. I was pretty blessed. That gave me a chance to get in those cars though, drive around and get a feel for them. Being around it all my life, that gave me the fever. As I had the chance to work with all these manufacturers over the years, I decided to collect different types of cars.” The result today is Cage’s private car collection: The RPM Collection: American Muscle Car Museum. The collection includes more than 50 luxury, racing and muscle cars. “I enjoy it, always have,” Cage says. “The newer cars I’ve been able to procure myself. You call all over the country and try to find the best deals. The older cars, and ones with unique stories, take more searching. But once you get them in, it is a lot of fun.” Cage has quite the collection. Among his favorites includes the Plymouth Road Runner. Cage’s Road Runner previously belonged to none other than MLB Hall of Famer and New York Yankees legend Reggie Jackson. “The Road Runner was a tough one to get,” Cage says. “But we were able to procure it from Reggie. It is pretty cool. It still has the nice ‘beep, beep’ to it that you used to hear.” Others in his collection include seven Dodge Demons (which can go 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.3 seconds, 1998 and 2017 Dodge Vipers, an award-winning 70s Mopar restoration collection, multiple Ferraris, several 1970 Plymouth ‘Cudas, multiple Dodge Challenger T/As and Shelby Cobras and much more. “The Hemi Cuda was the car of the day,” Cage says. “It was technologically way ahead of competitors at the time. Chrysler had a lot of great engineers at the time. Those are as sweet as it gets.” Probably the most unique and rare part of Cage’s collection sits in the back corner in a display all to its own. Cage was able to obtain the 1971 Indy 500 Pace Car, famous
for crashing at the beginning of the race. He also owns the backup pace car from that race and the 2019 No. 2 Indy 500 Pace Car which was featured in Simon Pagenaud’s victory lap this year. “That 1971 race is the only IndyCar race that has ever had a major accident with a pace car,” Cage says. “It was coming into the pits at 125 miles per hour and the brakes locked, the car hit the photography stand and, thankfully, no one was killed. Years later, I got the chance to buy it from Eldon Palmer, a local car dealer who was the one driving it the year it crashed. He passed away a couple years ago and was a great guy. So, I’ve got the most famous pace car in the world.” Typically, the pace car goes to the winner of the Indy 500. That year, in 1971, since the pace car crashed, IndyCar allowed the winner, Al Unser, to request a “victory” car he would like. Today, believe it or not, Cage owns that unique car in his collection as well.
“They asked Unser what he wanted and he said, ‘I want a Dodge Charger,’” Cage says. “It was the first time in history that has happened. He asked for a yellow one with a black top. We got it from his family, that he sold it to, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was totally trashed, kind of like the Dukes of Hazard. We put it back together, and we know the car was his because we have all the documentation.” Cage also owns a 1968 Ford Mustang Eleanor. There are several recreations of the popular car featured in the movie “Gone In 60 Seconds.” Cage’s Eleanor is one built by the famous George Barris himself and was actually driven around and used to promote the movie. The car is loaded up with a dual quad 428 engine, modified to 650 horsepower and a film-accurate interior.
Barris is famous for building one-of-akind cars used in TV and movies like The Batmobile from the Adam West Batman TV series in the late 60s, The Munster Koach from the 60s sitcom “The Munsters” and many more. “I got a chance to buy the car from Barris, and it is a really cool car,” Cage says. “It is as fast as can be, but it will shake your teeth out of your head.” Not all of the cars in Cage’s collection are just for show only. One of the questions Cage often gets asked is, “How often do you drive these cars?” “I do drive some of these,” Cage says. “I actually drove the Eleanor once to The Original Pancake House in Fishers. It is street legal, but it sounds like it is a race car. I pulled up and everyone came out of the restaurant to see it because they could hear it from inside. It’s a lot of fun.” Cage’s car collection is private — mainly reserved for family, friends and colleagues. He has, however, hosted fundraisers, galas and other events at his garage in the past and is open to more of those in the future to be able to highlight his collection some in the community and provide a unique venue for those looking to rent a space out for a big event. “We do host events where you pay to host the event, have food catered here and see the
AUGUST 2019
cars,” Cage says. “We have also done team-building events in the past as well.” Beyond his car collection, Cage stays busy with his latest venture — Cage Campus. Cage Campus, located in Fishers, includes “workspaces designed to maximize engagement and productivity.” Cage’s goal with Cage Campus is to empower local startups and other entrepreneurs with resources to sustain steady growth in their young companies.
join us for a
Remodeling Seminar
“Once I retired, I wanted to provide entrepreneurs a space at an economical cost,” he says. “We tried to come up with a concept to help these young entrepreneurs.” Cage, a Geist resident, also gives back to the community in a variety of ways. His most recent contribution in the last year includes donating more than $60,000 to the City of Fishers for brand new pickleball courts at Cyntheanne Park. The park continues to be a busy place for a sport that Cage loves and a sport that continues to grow in popularity across the country. “The sport is a lot of fun and it gives people the opportunity to do something for their wellness,” he says. “Now, we also have two of the nicest pickleball courts in the country right here at Cage Campus, too. Currently, they have listings for dwellings that range from $140,000 for a three-bedroom home in Anderson to more than $1.5M for expansive estates in Hamilton Proper. AMPED UP FISHERS SUMMER CONCERT SERIES RETURNS TO THE NICKEL PLATE DISTRICT AMPHITHEATER WITH NEW FEATURES & AMENITIES Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided City of Fishers & Brian Brosmer
If you’ve passed by the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater this summer on a Tuesday or Friday evening, chances are you’ve heard The Fishers Summer Concert Series. The Concert Series is hosted by Fishers Parks & Recreation. It offers free concerts three days a week — Tuesday and Friday evenings, which are presented by IU Health Saxony, and Wednesday during lunchtime, presented by Meyer Najem. Most shows feature local performers and artists.
Sandquist, Fishers Director of Parks & Recreation. “At some point in the future we look to have maybe a comedy show or Shakespeare in the Park kind of activities or musical theater.” Other new amenities include a sensoryfriendly area, which is located within the Pavilion building, and kids’ activities in the grass in front of the Pavilion building as well.
“It’s an area of activation for children with sensory issues, as well as a respite area,” Sandquist adds. “So, if it’s too loud in the concert area, if they need to come into the Changes this season include new Pavilion for a calm down area, that’s a spot showtimes, a refreshed venue and both local for them.” and national performing acts. “We’re so excited that the construction on the amphitheater is done. We have this new and renovated space with a deeper stage, so we can have some bigger acts,” says Sarah
Kids activities will be on a rotating schedule and will be available every Tuesday night, as well as most Friday nights. It will be close enough so parents can still have a view of their children playing in the grass. AUGUST 2019
All performances from The Fishers Concert Series are free, with the exception of two dates. All shows start at 8 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. Food and beverage vendors will be available on-site at both shows. Outside food and drink is allowed and encouraged. However, no outside food or beverages will be permitted at the two ticketed shows. “All the businesses in the Nickel Plate District are open for business. We encourage people to grab to-go options from there and bring it to the show,” Sandquist says. The first ticketed show is Friday, August 9. The amphitheater will welcome Jade Bird and Ruston Kelly in partnership with 92.3 WTTS. Jade Bird is a new and exciting British voice in the alternative music world. Ruston Kelly is a Nashville-based artist who will debut his first full-length album later this year. Tickets for this show are available now for $9.23 at npdamp.com/Tickets.
“There’s tons of families — everyone is coming to just chill out and enjoy good music,” Sandquist says. “Just sitting on the lawn on a summer night, it’s kind of your perfect evening and to have that opportunity to do that every Tuesday and Friday is really fun.” The second ticketed show, and final performance of the season at Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, will be Friday, September 20, featuring Grammy awardwinning artist, Van Hunt, whose music style is R&B soul, funk, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll. His nearly 15-year music career has earned him opportunities to headline alongside Kanye West, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band and more. Tickets for this show are $10.
“You can bring your lawn chair,” Sandquist says. “You can bring in food. We also have food and beverage vendors on-site — it rotates nightly. 5280 Bistro and MashCraft are there every Tuesday, and Four Day Ray will be there for the ticketed shows. They rotate and there is some consistency. We don’t necessarily advertise who or put that out on social because it changes so frequently.” For Tuesday night performances, Sandquist says there will always be about 2-3 vendors. On Friday nights, there will typically be 3-4 vendors at the amphitheater. Additionally, the Fishers Summer Concert Series will host its fifth annual Blues Fest on August 30 and August 31. The free, twoday event will feature performances from
renowned blues artists like B.B. King Blues Band featuring Michael Lee, John Ford, The Blues Ambassadors and more. “We’re excited about the season and we’re about a quarter of the way in,” Sandquist says. “There is still plenty of time to come see some great music and round out the second half of the summer with concerts at the amp.” A full list of performances is available online on the Nickel Plate Amphitheater website at npdamp.com. All performances are at the amphitheater, located at 6 Municipal Dr. All performances are free, with the exception of the two ticketed events on August 9 and September 20. All shows start at 8 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m.
The Bucket List MIDWEST BALLOON RIDES TO HOST BUCKET LIST SHOW SEPTEMBER 12 Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Brian Brosmer
A “Bucket List” is a number of experiences that one wants to do in their lifetime before they die and is something people think about but often don’t act on. Some individuals are not even sure what to put on it. Tony Sandlin, owner and chief pilot of Midwest Balloon Rides has come up with a way people can create their own bucket list, cross a couple things off of it and add even more. On Thursday, September 12, Sandlin is hosting the Bucket List Show, a fun evening that includes not only a tethered hot air balloon ride and a helicopter ride but also music, food, drinks, entertainment and booths staffed with representatives knowledgeable about other bucket-list-worthy activities. The event will be held at Tom Wood Aviation at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Airport, 9913 Willow View Road in Fishers, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $135 until August 30. After that date, the price is $150. For most attendees, the highlight of the
event will be the opportunity to experience not only a balloon ride but a helicopter ride as well. Sandlin’s company, Midwest Balloon Rides, will have its colorful balloons on site and ready to take riders up on a tether to a height of about 80 feet. Freedom Helicopters will be on hand to provide flights that will soar up to 500 feet above the airport. A professional photographer will be snapping photos to commemorate these once-in-a-lifetime experiences all throughout the evening. “During the balloon ride, people are in a basket with a door,” Sandlin says. “A tethered, 80-foot ride is an easy way to try it out. For some, the balloon ride and helicopter ride might offer enough of the experience that they can check it off their bucket list right then. But if someone wants a longer experience at a different time, we are there to give them more information.”
local disc jockey, Sunny Moon, while small plates from Barbecue & Bourbon and Tijuana Flats are enjoyed. Two drinks are included from the onsite cash bar plus unlimited soft drinks. Guests will be treated to a special dessert, too. Participants will be enlightened on other opportunities available for adding to a bucket list when they visit information stalls staffed with knowledgeable activity representatives. Planes and helicopters from Tom Wood Aviation will be on display and instructors will be on hand to answer questions on learning to fly both vehicles. Other booths may include scuba diving, exotic travel, sky diving and even ballroom dance lessons. In addition, exotic car rentals will be on display. “A typical balloon ride costs $250 per person, per hour,” Sandlin says. “The $135 price of the Bucket List Show offers guests a huge value. They can experience a balloon and helicopter ride in addition to having an entertaining and enlightening evening – all centered around their bucket list.”
The evening will provide plenty of opportunity to socialize and meet other like-minded people while being entertained. At least three acts by the Cincinnati Circus will be strolling through For more information and to purchase the crowd, such as fire throwing and stilt walking. Music will be provided by popular tickets visit 4BucketList.com. AUGUST 2019

INDIANA STATE FAIR RETURNS AUGUST 2-18 WITH NEW THEME, FOOD & FAMILY FUN Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided
Three of the most highly anticipated weeks in Indiana are almost here — the Indiana State Fair. The Indiana State Fair runs from Friday, August 2, through Sunday, August 18. This year’s theme, Heroes in the Heartland, which is presented by the Indiana Donor Network, salutes the countless Hoosiers who keep our country safe and make residents proud. Those heroes include farmers, first responders, educators, members of the Armed forces and cultural heroes as well. “The theme is always really important because it helps us develop all the activation and all the programming from year to year, from fair to fair,” says Sharon Smith, Director of Communications for the Indiana State Fair Commission.
Smith adds that when planning the state fair, it was important that it aligned well with an organization or business that really complimented the Heroes of the Heartland theme, such as the Indiana Donor Network. “The theme serves as a touchpoint to so many individuals and organizations and has such a broad appeal, again, with the balance between superheroes and cultural heroes,” Smith says. “It will touch a lot of Hoosiers and a lot of lives, and that’s why we selected that particular theme.” In addition to a new theme, the fair also has a wide selection of new features for guests to enjoy. “We’re bringing back the Big Top Circus, which was wildly popular last year,” Smith says. “It’s returning with new acts, though we will be bringing back Bello Nock, who is a kind of comic daredevil. He was extremely popular last year. I think people will be AUGUST 2019
happy to see him back again.” Other new amenities include a $5 fast pass for reserved seating at the Big Top. It will allow folks to have premium seating, so they won’t have to wait in line for first-come, first-served seating. However, free seating will also be offered for those who won’t wish to pay and are able to wait. Another new feature this year is a popular trend from across the country — goat yoga. Sixty-minute sessions will be offered at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Folks can register on the Indiana State Fair website for one of the $20 sessions. Also returning this year is Animal Town, which features eight different barnyard animals from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. each day of the fair. It’s located east of the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand next to the Communications Building.
“It was very popular last year,” Smith says. “It allowed folks to get up close and personal with barnyard animals and learn about them. Animal Town makes it a lot more user-friendly to get up close and personal with a variety of animals and learn all about them in a user-friendly way. There is a lot of posted information about the animals that you can take in at your leisure.” The Indiana State Fair also has new menu items. For Smith, her favorite part of the fair is its food. “We always offer some crazy, whacky and always delicious kind of extraordinary food item,” Smith says. Some new items include the Indiana Pork BBQ Split, which is offered by Indiana Pork Producers. The menu item is served just like a banana split — three scoops of pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, and coleslaw all served on top of a baked potato. Monroe’s Big Dog Diner is also offering fairgoers its Monroe’s Midwest Hero — a handbreaded tenderloin with cheese, bacon and Monroe’s special sassy sauce. The Dairy Bar is also debuting its Hoosier Hometown Hash — two grilled hash brown patties surrounded by four types of cheese: Muenster, pepper jack, cheddar and Swiss. Urick Concessions will be serving up deepfried cookie ice cream sandwiches, while Red Frazier Bison is featuring bison hush puppies. To have the best fair experience, Smith suggests going on $2 Tuesday. “If you come on $2 Tuesday, you can sample a lot of different food items for $2,” Smith says. “Admission is $2, parking is $2, and food samples are $2. That’s a great way to experience the fair. Use $2 Tuesday to go around and sample some things, not just the food and activities. You can come back another day and focus more on what you really love.” The Indiana State Fair runs from Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 18. It’s located at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, 1202 E. 38th St. For additional information, such as a list of vendors and hours of operation, visit them online at indianastatefair.com/state-fair. The City of Fishers is stepping up to the plate when it comes to strengthening its art and cultural district. One way it’s doing so is through the Fishers Arts Crawl, which is presented in partnership with the Fishers Arts Council. The Fishers Arts Crawl is a night where residents can wander around and shop
at businesses within the Nickel Plate District, which was recently designated as a Statewide Cultural District. While there, visitors will see local and regional artwork and performances. Traditionally, the Arts Crawl is a one-day event in July. However, this year there are three Arts Crawls – the recent July 19 one and another on August 16, both from 6-9 p.m., and September 14 from 4-9 p.m. Two additional Arts Crawls were added this year AUGUST 2019
to commemorate its fifth anniversary. “Our July and August Arts Crawl are very traditionally what Arts Crawl usually is, which is different artists or performers around the Nickel Plate District inside local businesses. It’s a collaboration between businesses and artists,” says Stephanie Perry, Assistant Director of Public Relations for the City of Fishers. “Our September one will be that, but we’re hoping that it’s so much more and
that we’ll have almost a street festival feel around the Municipal Complex.” For visitors wanting to bring children, the September Arts Crawl will be the anniversary celebration, which will be more family-oriented. The other two, July and August, will be more adult-oriented. Mixed Mediums This year, the Arts Crawl has the most artists they’ve ever had participating. Visitors can expect to see a variety of mediums and styles of art around the Nickel Plate District. They will also hear blues bands, acoustics and Acapella groups. “We have visual artists and we have performing artists,” says Tom Rich, Vice President of the Fishers Arts Council. “They can expect to enjoy what the businesses offer them, with some of the businesses offering some specials. And then in addition, they’ll be able to experience some of the artwork from the artists and hear some music.” Several businesses will offer special promotions during Arts Crawl. Deals range from complimentary services and refreshments to discounts on purchases. “The businesses are really embracing it and trying to expand their role as well,” Perry says. The Fishers Arts Council hopes to get people to understand that the Arts Crawl is dynamic and not static. To make it more dynamic, the Arts Crawl will have live performances by VOCE Indianapolis, an Acapella group, and Anthony Boler, a magician, as they travel around the Nickel Plate District throughout the evening. “It’s more than just going out to dinner or going to a business,” Rich says. Leveraging Arts and Culture With Arts Crawl expanding over three dates and three months’ time, it’s showcasing how the city is leveraging its arts and cultures. When Fishers became a Statewide Cultural District in December, it started an arts commission.
“We’re stepping up to the plate when it comes to art and culture — we want to be known for that,” Perry says. “But along with that, it’s a beautiful evening to enjoy downtown Fishers, discover new local artists and performers that maybe you’re not familiar with and also discover new businesses.” Rich says that for local artists, the Arts Crawl is a chance for them to display their work. “That’s really exciting for us because Fishers artists, they really don’t have a lot of places to exhibit their art and this is one of the few chances throughout the year where they can showcase their art and have it seen by their friends and their neighbors,” Rich says. “It’s nice for artists to exhibit, but this also gives them the chance to sell, too.” The Fishers Arts Crawl has two remaining dates, August 16 from 6-9 p.m., and September 14 from 4-9 p.m. The Arts Crawl is free to attend. For more information about the event, such as participating businesses, artists and performers, visit playfishers.com/184/Arts-Crawl.

2ND ANNUAL KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. KICKBALL TOURNAMENT RETURNS SEPTEMBER 21 Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography provided
HSE S.P.O.R.T.S. will hold its 2nd annual KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. kickball tournament on September 21 at Billericay Park. The event will host teams made up of six to 10 players to compete in a double elimination, bracketed kickball tournament starting at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome to register for the tournament — businesses, sports leagues, friends, neighborhoods and community groups. Teams will then be divided into separate divisions based on age and team makeup.
“Our goal in putting together KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. was to create an event that is unique to the Fishers community, that includes participants of all ages, in a fun sport that everyone can play,” says Beth Lawrence, development coordinator for HSE S.P.O.R.T.S. There are several new changes to the tournament this year, such as its new location at Billericay Park, which is also where the S.P.O.R.T.S. office is located. “Holding the kickball tournament at our new location will allow us to utilize two AUGUST 2019
more fields than we had during our first year — so we can bring on more teams,” Lawrence says. “We look forward to having close to 30 teams battle it out on eight fields throughout the park.” There is a fee for each team to register. Every team will have one captain who will serve as the team’s main contact to communicate game times, tournament rules and updates. However, children’s teams (junior high school or younger) must have a parent team captain. Teams can register at kickforsports.org/events/ kick-for-s-p-o-r-t-s.
“Funds raised during the tournament will provide youth sports scholarships for underprivileged families in Fishers,” Lawrence adds. “These scholarships give families access to programs offered by S.P.O.R.T.S. for any or all of the fall, winter and spring seasons during the school year. The money raised from this event also allows S.P.O.R.T.S. to provide background checks and key training for more than 2,000 coaches involved in its leagues and assist with maintenance efforts for our fields and facilities.” Each game will run approximately a half hour, and teams are encouraged to wear costumes or corporate branding shirts. Each participating player will also receive an official KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. T-shirt during the event. “Under the new 2019 format, the games will run every half-hour and teams will be able to participate with a minimum of six players and a maximum of 11,” Lawrence says. “In planning for this year, we wanted to give participants more flexibility to join us on a busy Saturday and the new six-person minimum caters to this. If a participant needs to leave to coach or play a game, they can do so and rejoin their kickball team afterward.” She also says that the tournament is “truly a community event.” Residents who are not playing in the event are still encouraged to come out and cheer on the teams. Food and drink vendors will be onsite, as will music and other activities. Medals will be given to division champs.
“Last year, we had teams ranging from elementary school age children through adults and everything in between,” Lawrence says. “We had sports teams and companies use KICK as a team-building event. We had families play alongside their neighbors and church youth groups compete against each other all in the spirit of having fun on a Saturday. The team pride was off the charts and we loved seeing all of the clever themes.”
KICK FOR S.P.O.R.T.S. is September 21 at Billericay Park beginning at 9 a.m. Divisions will be formed once all teams have registered to allow for ideal matching between adult and kids teams. More information including team registration can be found at KICKFORSPORTS.org. Event updates will be shared on Facebook @HSE Sports and on Twitter @SPORTSHSE. HSE JUNIOR EARNS 2019 NATIONAL STUDENT POET HONORS Writer / Matt Keating . Photographer / Josh Brown
Salma Mohammad, a junior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, recently won the 2019 National Student Poet contest, a prestigious award given to just a handful of students. She was chosen from among thousands of award-winning poets to serve for a year as a National Student Poet, one of the nation’s highest honors for youth poets presenting original work. “It feels amazing,” Mohammad says. “When I first heard the news, I had to make sure I was understanding everything correctly, and I really couldn’t believe I had won. This contest means everything to me, because I’ve always kind of suppressed my love for poetry. I always viewed it as a hobby or something that can always be put off. I never prioritized it, even though it was something I enjoyed doing.” Mohammad noted that after winning the contest, she felt as though her poetry wasn’t just a hobby anymore. “I thought it was something that I should better prioritize, and use as a tool to change the world,” she says. Mohammad has been writing poetry since she was a young child. “The first time I wrote a poem was in the third grade, when a girl on the playground decided to do a twirl, and banged her head into my nose,” she says. Prestigious Award Mohammad was one of just five students in the nation to be appointed a National Student Poet.
Awards. The awards program, which is nearly 100, is known for its recognition and celebration of the country’s most creative teens. Mohammad won the contest for a poem she entered called “White Noise.” “My poem outlines the lack of attention given by Americans to the state of Palestine,” Mohammad says. “My mother is Palestinian, and so I’ve prioritized educating myself on the politics of what is going on.”
“They pick one student from each region (of Mohammad added that, “Although it is the country),” Mohammad says. about Palestine, the theme of the poem still reaches to the many other countries in the Mohammad noted that the National world who face humanitarian crisis. The Poets’ 2018 Appointment Events were hosted in cooperation with the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and held in conjunction with The National Book Festival. “The winners perform their poems to the senators and representative of Indiana, as well as the states of the other four winners,” Mohammad says. Mohammad credits Karin Foster, the HSE librarian, for telling her to enter the contest. “Without her, I wouldn’t even have a chance at this amazing opportunity,” Mohammad says. “I want to give another thanks to all my English teachers who have supported my writing, despite (my) being an unfocused student.”

HEART & HUSTLE HSE BASEBALL COACH REFLECTS ON HISTORIC SEASON WINNING SCHOOL’S FIRST-EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography Provided
Jeremy Sassanella’s first year as head coach of Hamilton Southeastern High School’s (HSE) varsity baseball team was, quite literally, one for the record books. In June, Sassanella’s squad brought home the school’s first Class 4A baseball state championship, overcoming Columbus East 3-2 at Indy’s Victory Field. Hamilton Southeastern won their last 11 games of the season in the process of capturing the state title, and strong pitching performances played a key role in the final game. Royals pitchers allowed Columbus East just five total hits, with starter Michael Dillon going four innings allowing two runs on four hits, and Tyler Schweitzer finishing

In the bottom of Due to inclement weather, the the seventh, Grayson Droste hit a ground championship game didn’t start until nearly ball into a fielder’s choice, which led to a 10:00 p.m., and the late start, combined throwing error by East’s shortstop, resulting with what Sassanella describes as an “awful” in the winning run by Anthony Eggers. pregame warmup, might have rattled many a squad. However, Sassanella says the Dewolf went two of three with two RBIs, Royals kept their composure as the first and Cam Bolling, Matthew Buckingham, pitch was thrown. Harrison, DeWael and Eggers all had hits in the game. “I pulled them into the dugout after that bad pregame and asked them if we’ve exorcized “There were so many great things that those demons, and they answered ‘yes’ individual guys did in that game, but I think almost in unison,” he says. “I knew we were the one that stands out more than anything focused after that, and when they stepped else is Tyler Schweitzer coming in in a really on the field in the first inning, it was on.” tough spot in the fifth inning and just being an absolute bulldog,” Sassanella says. Columbus East tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning after HSE senior Cole DeWael scored HSE compiled an overall record of 23-8 on the last three innings with five strikeouts and zero runs.

the season and finished 10-4 in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference. While he didn’t necessarily envision an eventual state title toward the beginning of the season, Sassanella recalls a feeling of what he calls “cautious optimism” setting in early on as he became familiar with the players on his first roster as HSE’s head coach. “As I got to meet the kids at the start of the year I started getting the feeling like we had some real potential,” he recalls. “We had a couple of kids who were going to be committing to the Division I level, which is always a good thing. As we dug in and I got to know the kids and went to work, we knew there was a good foundation.” Sassanella was drafted out of DeKalb High School in 1997 by the Detroit Tigers and played minor league ball for three seasons before embarking on a coaching career. Prior to the 2018-2019 academic year, he served as the head coach for three years at Brebeuf Jesuit and previously served in various coaching capacities at Fort Wayne Northrop and Fort Wayne South Side high schools, as well as several youth programs in central and northern Indiana. The state championship comes two years after HSE officially named its field after Ken Seitz, who won 514 games over a 25-year career as varsity coach. After retiring upon completion of the 2001 season, at which time he was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame, Seitz came back to be a part of the team in 2010 and still serves on the coaching staff with his son Kory. “It feels really special to have pulled off the win, and I’m so happy for the Seitzes and the HSE community,” Sassanella says. “I said to the kids the first day I met them, ‘Guys, you determine who we become.’ They really took that upon themselves and decided to become great.”

and we both agreed Fishers would be the best place to start,” Black says.
When Damien Black, the trainer at High Octane Boxing, 9022 E. 126th Street, located at Fishers Fuel Tank, opened his business, he wanted to share his enthusiasm for sports he loves.
He has already received a positive response from new members after the business opened recently.
“I had experience in boxing and in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and wanted to share my passion for the sports as well as help people get in to shape, no matter what level they are at,” Black says. “I had been working with Chad Hallett, the general manager of the Fishers Fuel Tank, for a couple of years, and we collaborated on our own idea of cardio boxing classes.” So they started High Octane Boxing. Choosing Fishers as the location of High Octane Boxing was an easy decision. “I developed a great relationship with Chad,
“Thus far, the Fishers community response has been overwhelming,” Black says. “All of our members and guests have been very accepting, but we are still in our growth phase. We are not sure if being behind the Fishers YMCA (9012 E. 126th Street) has helped or hurt us. We don’t have storefront property where people can see what we do.” So far, things have been positive. “Most of our members are just from word of mouth,” Black says. “We have not done any marketing, other than our social media pages on Facebook and Instagram.” Black noted that High Octane Boxing offers multiple cardio boxing classes, 42 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019 / atFishers.com
Monday-Friday. “Each class is 50 minutes, and there is just one class on Saturday and Sunday,” Black says. “There are a lot of one-on-one personal training sessions, and we also have small group training sessions, kids’ Boxing classes and Boxing for beginners.” Black enjoys teaching people everything about boxing. “I’ve always had an interest in the sport,” he says. “I love the training and competitive aspect. While I was in grad school, my professor and mentor ( Jason Winkle), was a former combative instructor at West Point Military Academy. I learned from him until I graduated and didn’t pick it back up until I started working at Butler University.” While at Butler, he started boxing and doing mixed martial arts competitively.
“I won the Golden Gloves tournament two times, and I racked up a 10-win record in Mixed Martial Arts,” Black says. After graduate school, Black took an internship at the University of Florida to work with the Gators football program and that led to a job at Purdue University as a strength coach for football. “After being at Purdue University for a year, I was offered a job at Ohio State University (OSU), to work with the football team as a strength coach, when (OSU) Coach Urban Meyer was hired in.”

Not only do you get a great workout, but you have fun and meet great people.” Black adds that inside the Fuel Tank, there are two full-size hockey rinks and the Fuel Fitness Center. “The fitness center is a state-of-the-art sports performance facility, open to the public and athletes of all age groups,” he says. when you get in the building,” White says. “You aren’t going to find that in our industry.”
Jerry White, General Manager of the Hamilton Town Center Crew Carwash, 13425 Tegler Drive, Noblesville, says the new Xpress Interior Carwash is quite different from what most customers would envision.
The process is unique to watch.
“Instead of pulling into a parking spot while a service advisor would clean the vehicle, the customer pulls into a state-of-the-art complex that utilizes two conveyor belts to move the vehicle to each cleaning station,” White says. An efficient team takes over from there.
“Aside from our great service and friendly people, it is something worth seeing,” White says. “It’s so different than anything most people have seen before. It’s a quality cleaning in its own building, with separate stations. It’s very cool.” The Hamilton Town Center Crew Carwash has various specials that have been enticing customers. “We have a one-time interior cleaning that costs $20 and our unlimited plan usually starts at $29.99,” White says. “We are currently offering the unlimited cleaning plan at only $19.99 a month. It really is a fantastic offer that you can go unlimited for the same price as one cleaning.”
“Our friendly team begins a quick and efficient process to clean the specific areas that we focus on,” White says. “We take out and clean the floor mats. We also wipe the windows, vacuum the inside, wipe the dash, door jams, and use special air-powered cleaning guns that help clean cup holders White has worked for Crew Carwash for and get into areas that are tough to reach.” 22 years. White noted that the Hamilton Town Center Crew Carwash location has been very successful.
“I actually started with the company at the last full-service Mike’s Carwash that closed in
“We opened in November 2018,” White says. “We have had a lot of really positive feedback from the community, and we have been getting a lot of people.” White adds that it’s the Crew Carwash quality that customers have come to love, with a twist on interior cleaning. “Rather than waiting 45 minutes to an hour for a clean car, we provide a great clean experience that takes only 10 minutes or less 44 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2019 / atFishers.com
1998,” White says. “I have managed multiple Crew Carwash exterior locations over the years and have been very excited to be part of this new venture for the company.” White notes that the Xpress Interior Clean service in Noblesville is special. “The service is really great for the price, and it’s worth a visit just for the experience,” White says. “This is the only one of its kind in Indiana and the surrounding areas.” White and Nate Weaver, the operations manager at Hamilton Town Center Crew Carwash, have had a lot of experience with the Xpress Interior Clean service. “Nate and I actually trained on how to do this in Manheim, Germany so it is truly worldwide, and we bring a good part of that German process and speed to Noblesville,” he says. BLUSH SALON BOUTIQUE CELEBRATES REOPENING IN NEW FISHERS LOCATION Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Glenda White
Melanie Stoddard represents everything positive about living and running a small business in Fishers. Recently moving her business to the Spark Apartments Building in the heart of the Nickel Plate District in May of this year, you would never know that less than a year ago, she was faced with the possibility of closing her doors for good. But with a deep desire to continue working in Fishers, along with a bit of ingenuity, her business now thrives in its new location. Four years ago, Stoddard opened the doors to her business, Blush Salon Boutique in a quaint cottage directly behind Handel’s Ice Cream. The former corporate employee enjoyed the quiet street and everything about her business. But the road to becoming a small business owner almost came to an end when she received notice that her building would be demolished
to make room for new buildings and businesses. What looked like the end was given new life from an unsuspecting ally. As a small business owner, Stoddard knew that the landscape and skyline of Fishers was rapidly progressing, but she did not know how it would affect her until she was informed in November of last year that her building was set to be demolished. She began searching for a new location right away and realized that this was not going to be an easy process. “I was literally panicked, and everything I found was either too small and expensive, too large and expensive and was going to be a struggle because all of the development, but I really did not want to leave Fishers,” she says. She wondered if she should just accept her fate and close her doors. But in her mind, she knew she had to keep fighting for a atFishers.com / AUGUST 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 45
solution. She decided to reach out to the Mayor’s office and sent Mayor Scott Fadness a letter explaining her situation and asked for help. Within 24 hours, she had received an email from Megan Baumgartner, Director of Economic Development, letting her know that Mayor Fadness had forwarded her email to her. Baumgartner shared information with her about the Spark Apartments Building, which offered a solution well-suited to her business. Stoddard was shocked that she received a call so quickly. She was very encouraged to see that even in a development boom that Fishers still cared enough to help a small business. Baumgartner introduced Stoddard to the Spark Apartments Building which provided a larger space than her old location, in prime real estate that provides a higher traffic footprint, and it was in her budget. By January, she had signed the lease, the space
was built and she reopened her doors on May 10. “The location is perfect. I could not have asked for a better solution,” Stoddard says. The design and style of Blush Salon Boutique offers a modern, clean and peaceful space. The salon was impeccably designed to create a relaxing environment. This lends itself well to the philosophy of Stoddard’s salon, which is “to provide the best products, positive and relaxing atmosphere that will put you at ease as soon as you walk in the door.” Stoddard, a wife, mother of two and a Fishers resident, is amazed how well everything worked out as she reflects back on the journey that brought her here. “I went to college, got a degree, worked at jobs I didn’t love until one day, I decided it was time to take a chance on my happiness,” Stoddard says. Starting Blush Salon Boutique was worth the risk, she says, and she is grateful she pursued her passion. She encourages others to believe in their dreams. “Take a chance and follow your heart even if you have to do something scary because it just might lead you to something you love,” she adds. For Stoddard, that means she will be staying in Fishers for a long time. “The people of Fishers are very welcoming,” she says. “It is a great place to live and own a business.” Along with hair services, Blush Salon Boutique offers a small boutique to celebrate the work of other local small businesses from local artisans and offer unique gifts for her customer’s convenience. For a list of products and services visit them online at blushsalonboutique.com. Blush Salon Boutique is located at 8880 North Street, #118 or call 317-523-1635.
