Owner, Bill Starkey
NEW MOTORSPORTS MEGASTORE DRAWING INTEREST ACROSS INDY
Bill Starkey’s love for motorsports was kindled early - very early. By the age of 13, the Indianapolis native and Ben Davis High School grad already had a job at Dreyer Motorsports removing motors for the inhouse techs to work on.
Small wonder, then, that Starkey decided to launch his own powersport megastore in March of 2017. Flat Out Motorsports offers motorcycles, watercraft, dirt bikes, ATVs and more, and the location of his establishment, off of I-69 and previously occupied by General Motors, is one of several factors he feels contributes to the store’s success so far.
Starkey’s foray into the motorsport industry began in the mid-1990s when he opened a 400-square-foot shop buying and selling motorcycle parts. A few years later, he graduated to selling used motorcycles and, by 2007, was operating an east-side Suzuki dealership, a Yamaha and Polaris dealership in Martinsville and a Yamaha store in Greenwood.
“I was always fixing my own dirt bikes as a kid and buying my own parts with money that I earned from detasseling corn and a paper route,” Starkey recalls. “By my senior year in high school I was doing full engine builds and diagnostic work. Motorcycles, dirt bikes, motocross — I loved all that stuff as a kid and did races through my early 20s. I just love the industry.”
“Our market is one-third of one percent of the population, so I knew I needed to build in the right place at the right time with the right products,” says Starkey, whose wife Amy also works at Flat Out. “That’s what brought me to the I-69 corridor. I think having a large selection helps in this industry too, because brand popularity changes a lot and you have to evolve with that.”
After the economic downturn of 2008-2009, Starkey decided it was time to close several of his smaller establishments and build out a megastore in an optimal location that would allow him to modify his selection of products according to ever-changing consumer preferences.

6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
“I knew that to have a chance in this
business you have to have a large selection and good exposure to internet traffic and interstate traffic,” he says. Keeping his Martinsville location, Starkey embarked on a complete floor-to-ceiling renovation in the latter half of 2016 following the purchase of his northside facility. Flat Out’s expansive showroom now houses Polaris, Indian, Slingshot, CanAm, Yamaha and Sea-Doo products among others, and Starkey has doubled his staff since opening to meet increasing sales and service demand. “Our growth is 100 percent this year, and, again, I think that’s due to the right location, products and people,” says Starkey, who has also operated an online sister auto parts company for the last 12 years. “The powersports industry is not actually in very good shape, but things have been going well for us because we can adapt our inventory to a business that’s consistently changing every day,” he adds. “Indian and Slingshot have been big sellers, and in this market near Geist and Morse, Sea-Doo does great.” Starkey works full-time for the Indianapolis Fire Department at Station 44 - a position he’s held for 22 years since completing a four-year stint in the Army after high school. He says the job helps to balance the stress of operating within the motorsports industry — an industry he says will likely be as unrecognizable in 10 to 15 years as it was when he was a youngster. “Ten years from now, honestly I don’t know how many motorcycles we’ll be selling — millennials aren’t buying them,” he says, adding that Flat Out Motorsports sponsors several fundraisers each year including the Indianapolis Miracle Ride supporting Riley Hospital. “We’ll have to continue to mold our product line based on what the consumer wants. You just have to adapt and overcome.” Flat Out Motorsports is located at 7525 East 88th Place in Indianapolis. For more information, call 317-890-9110 and visit flatoutmotorcycles.com.

VARDAGEN FISHERS EXPERIENCING SUCCESS WITH WEST COAST EXPANSION
Owner Jared Ingold recently expanded the store with a pop-up shop in L.A.
Writer / Julie Young Photographer / Brandy Hornback
When Jared Ingold began designing and printing custom t-shirts in a friend’s garage, the Ohio native was not planning to take the fashion world by storm. In 2006, he was merely having fun creating his first ugly Christmas sweater t-shirt. He didn’t expect it to be sold in 45 countries around the world. “It kind of grew from there,” he says. “It” is Vardagen, a graphic t-shirt brand and the creative arm of The Art Press
(Ingold’s print shop located near downtown Indianapolis) that has been in Fishers for the past eight years and has recently begun making its mark on the west coast. According to Ingold, Vardagen designs have been featured on the Urban Outfitters blog, been worn in a national Starbucks commercial and have even been spotted in Hot Topic. “Everything we make is unique,” Ingold says. “We do the entire process ourselves. We hand draw everything. We mix our own inks. We print our designs on the softest garments. We are not just the same old mass
produced mainstream logos and graphics.” Vardagen is a Swedish word meaning “every day” and Ingold says people can interpret the term any way they choose to. A t-shirt is something people wear every day, but a Vardagen shirt is a crazy mix of style, quality and design, with plenty of humor thrown in for good measure. One of their more popular graphics features a skeleton laboring in the fields with the caption, “Working ourselves to death.” It’s an ironic nod to the idea that although we may need to work in order to live, the constant toil can lead to an early grave.
“We are not a ‘Life is good’ brand but a crazy mix of things that come together in one place,” Ingold says “Our designer, Daniel Jewett, started with me about two or three years after I got the business going and everything you see now is his artwork. There is no shortage to his creativity.” Of course, it’s not easy to start a brand out of nowhere or to blaze a trail in the Midwest, but Ingold feels there is no limit to what Vardagen can do. In 2015, Ingold added a Sure Shot espresso bar to his Fisher’s store after seeing them in New York boutiques. It’s something unique for the Midwest, but Ingold felt strongly that the community needed a coffee bar that was not a traditional franchise and when none opened up he said he’d do it himself. “It’s an idea that is ahead of its time,” he says. Of course his most ambitious project to date was Vardagen’s expansion into the Los Angeles marketplace. In 2017, Ingold was determined to see how his brand might fare in a new market. He found a spot in the world-renowned shopping district of Abbot Kenney and created a pop-up store that was only intended to be open for 30 days. “It was expensive but I had a hunch that it would do well,” he says. “We made back all of our money on the project as well as a profit so we extended it until December and now we’ve extended it again for another year.” It was a hunch that paid off and while both stores continue to do well, Ingold says Vardagen is a communitycentered, earth-friendly brand that will never cater to a specific market. “Authenticity is very important to us,” he says. “If we don’t love it, we don’t sell it.” Vardagen is located at 8684 E. 116th St. in Fishers. You can visit them online at shop.vardagen.com or call 317-572-5570.

MAMA NITA'S C E L E B R AT E S G R A N D O P E N I N G I N F I S H E R S Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Michael Durr
The secret to a great local pizza place is having a wide variety of pizza options and other entrées to choose from. Everything also needs to taste fresh and delicious.
Mama Nita’s Pizza, which opened recently, meets that criteria and the staff ensure they have a large selection of other food options. Patrick Finn, co-owner of Mama Nita’s, 11007 N. Allisonville Road, says he and his staff are looking forward to being your local pizza shop. He believes Fishers is an ideal location for another successful restaurant in the Mama Nita’s lineup.
Customers want to know they are getting excellent crust, which is not just the heart of the pizza but also one of the most important ingredients. The toppings also need to be “We are one of three Mama Nita locations,” fresh, and above all, taste delicious. Finn says. “The first one was established 12 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
in 2008 in New Palestine, and we opened the second location in Greenfield in 2017. Now we are here in Fishers. We found an opening here and believe it will be a good fit with good food and a great environment.” The pizza at Mama Nita’s is outstanding, but that’s not their only delicious item. They offer a wide variety of menu options. “We specialize in a variety of subs and wings, as well as our pizza,” Finn says. “We
get a lot of requests for our chicken bacon ranch pizza and our bacon cheeseburger pizza.” Finn says that the staff at Mama Nita’s has already made many new friends. “The community response has been great,” Finn says. “The customers are positive and supportive. We enjoy the Fishers atmosphere and the welcoming local businesses around us.” Customers already have their favorites. Finn stressed that the Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza, the BBQ chicken and The Cinnamon Roll Pizza are frequently ordered. Finn’s personal favorites are the wings and the Buffalo Chicken Pizza. “We also have a good salad variety and offer appetizers, such as made-from-scratch Potato Skins, Mozzarella Sticks and Chicken Fingers,” he adds.

SUN KING CANVITATIONAL CANNED CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS SEPT. 8 The Midwest’s largest canned craft beer festival is back. The 6th annual Sun King CANvitational will return to downtown Indianapolis on Sept. 8. Located on the west block of Georgia Street, known for Super Bowl XLVI festivities and the famed Pan Am Plaza, this year’s CANvitational will showcase more than 55 craft breweries from across America that can their beers. Award-winning breweries will offer samples of craft beer, and patrons can enjoy local food trucks and music, all in an urban downtown atmosphere. All proceeds from the event will benefit six central Indiana not-for-profits. “For our 6th year hosting the Sun King CANvitational, six central Indiana charities will benefit from the festival proceeds,” says Sun King Brewery co-founder and
head brewer Dave Colt. “Sun King has invited over 55 can craft beer friends from near and far to join us in celebration, and we are excited to announce this year’s CANlaboration is with Founders Brewing of Grand Rapids, Mich. Founders has been instrumental in the craft beer movement and our CANlaboration will be released during CANvitational.” Sun King Brewing Company is the brainchild of Dave Colt and Clay Robinson. With the help of family and friends, the first keg of Sun King beer rolled out the door for delivery in July 2009. Now available on tap and in cans at hundreds of locations statewide, Sun King has grown into a leader in the craft brewing movement in Indiana. Sun King’s brewers handcraft flagship, seasonal and specialty beers that atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 19
have been rewarded with multiple medals at the Indiana Brewers Cup, the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup competitions, and the brewery donates to hundreds of community organizations throughout Indiana. Sun King has three locations: A downtown Indianapolis brewery and tasting room, a small batch brewery and tasting room in Fishers and Sun King Spirits, a distillery in Carmel that opened in July 2018. Tickets are on sale now and available at all Sun King locations (135 N. College Ave., downtown Indianapolis; 7848 E. 96th St., Fishers; 351 Monon Blvd, Carmel) or at canvitational.com. were awarded through the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation and have been used for special projects that will benefit many students throughout the 21-school district. Those projects include drawing and painting projects, an Explore the World teacher grant, support of the Black Student Association, the Exceptional Learners program, wellness programs and nature trails behind Fall Creek Elementary School, says Executive Director of the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Education Foundation Justin Hirnisey. “Without this generous support form Tri Kappa, many of these innovative, teacher-led projects that directly impact student learning in the HSE School district would not have been possible,” Hirnisey says. In addition to funding grants through the Hamilton Southeastern Education Foundation, Fishers Tri Kappa serves the community in several other ways including Adopt-a-Road, a Geist Half Marathon water stop, a Prom Dress Resale project, volunteering at Riley Children’s Hospital and hosting a photography contest for intermediate level students at Hamilton Southeastern schools. The sorority also donates funds to several charities including Special Olympics, Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope, Third Phase, Indy Snack Attack, the Roy Holland Backpack for Kids program and many more. Confirmed vendors for the 2018 Fishers Tri Kappa Donut Festival include Taylor’s Bakery, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market, The Well Coffeehouse and Titus Bakery, but Tri Kappa plans to add several more to the lineup leading up to the event. Those interested in tickets can email Fishers Tri Kappa at fisherstkdonutfestival@gmail.com or visit the group’s Facebook page facebook. com/fisherstkdonutfestival. HSE School s Receive Gold Star Designation By Indiana Department of Education Writer / Kelly Wallace Photography Provided by HSE Schools
Counselor Association Fall Conference in November.
The Indiana Department of Education has announced all 21 Hamilton Southeastern Schools have been designated as Gold Star Schools.
It’s a remarkable achievement, and it’s one that can be credited largely to the $2 million, 4-year Lily Endowment Comprehensive Counseling Initiative grant, and a lot of hard work by about 600 educators and volunteers.

American Student Achievement Institute’s Guiding All Kids survey, establishing goals for student outcomes, aligning efforts to counseling standards and committing to maximizing the time school counselors spend in direct service of students, says Freedom Kolb, who is serving as the Special Projects Officer for the Student Success Team at Hamilton Southeastern Schools and spearheading the school district’s counseling improvement efforts. The goal of the school district’s efforts is to help students “master standards in the areas of academic, career and citizenship development, overcome personal and/or social concerns that are interfering with learning and make sound educational choices like choosing to come to school, turn in homework, enroll in tough courses and enroll in extra-help programs,” according to the American Student Achievement Institute. Southeastern Schools is these efforts are simply improving upon great systems already in place. Earning the Gold Star designation for all schools is an indication of “always keeping students at our core,” Kolb says. “For students to be successful, we need to give every individual student what they need.” With this effort, Hamilton Southeastern Schools wants everyone in the community involved. “It’s every adult’s responsibility in the community to guide students,” Kolb says. “Collectively, we work together to reach a student’s highest potential.” Kolb says many business owners and other professionals have been a fantastic resource for students in giving opportunities for internships, coming to schools to teach lessons and in many other ways.
Parents are also great stakeholders, Kolb says. Jodi Osmun, a parent who serves on the Riverside Intermediate School steering committee, has two children in the Hamilton Southeastern Schools system. Osman says she is excited to see a greater focus on the emotional and social well being of all Hamilton Southeastern Students, as well as efforts to guide students into careers or trades after high school. “So many times we focus on standardized tests,” Osmun says. “There's so much testing done, sometimes I feel we might miss the whole of the child. This is a game changer in that regard.” Osmun says she has already noticed changes in the classroom and looks forward to seeing new techniques and processes implemented in coming years. Gaither Family Resources Fall Festival Coming Up Sept. 21-22 Writer / Nicole Sipe Photography Provided
The Gaither Family Resources Fall Festival is as much a celebration of gospel music and family as it is a celebration of the small town of Alexandria, Indiana, where Bill and Gloria Gaither built their home 54 years ago. The weekend-long festival includes live entertainment and tours of the Gaither Recording Studio, opportunities to dine with the Gaithers and gospel concerts at a nearby church in Anderson. “Our grounds will be full of great food, concerts everywhere and all kinds of friends to meet from every state and several countries,” says Gloria Gaither. “We will turn our bus barn — where we keep our tour buses — into a theater, our big
shipping warehouse into a giant food space and our big grassy field into a home for two huge tents where there will be other concerts and all kinds of craftsmen and artists. We will give tours of our little town and tell about the places both Bill and I have loved through the years.” Music has always been an important part of the Gaithers’ lives. From the start of their marriage, they wrote, sang, recorded and marketed their own music, first as the Bill Gaither Trio for more than 20 years, then as the Gaither Vocal Band for another two decades. After 40 years of making music together, plus two Grammy Awards and more than a dozen Dove Awards to their name, the couple considered winding down their career in the music business. However, life had other plans for them. atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 25
“The Gaither Vocal Band decided to make a tribute album to the groups and singers that enchanted them when they were growing up, inviting several of these aging heroes to join them in the studio to sing an old Gospel favorite by Stuart Hamblin, ‘Where Could I Go But to the Lord?’” Gaither says. “Little did they or we know, what began as a three-minute DJ cut for television would spawn a phenomenon called the Gaither Homecoming video series. Now, 300, 90-minute videos later, people come to our town to see where all this started.” The idea for the fall festival sprang from the Gaithers’ desire to reunite each year with the friends they have made that stop in their town to visit Gaither Recording Studio, shop at the Gaither Family Resources retail store and eat at their restaurant, Pure and Simple.
“About 10 years ago, we decided to have a ‘homecoming’ and invited our friends from all over the world to come visit our little town of Alexandria,” Gaither says. “We wanted to fill our campus with music, Midwest artists and craftsmen and all kinds of fun activities and food that reflect this great heartland we call the ‘breadbasket of the world.’ And what better time to bring people who love our music than harvest time, when the apples are ripe and the grains are being gathered from the field?”
With their festival, the Gaithers hope to meet, share a meal and enjoy great music and art with other people who enjoy gospel music and small-town Midwestern living. “We want people to experience our small town where Bill was born and where we have raised our family,” Gaither says. “We want visitors to feel as if they are family and that this Midwest heartland is way more than a ‘fly-over zone.’ It’s a place where people still take care of each other

and go the extra mile when there is a need. We want people to know that music about the God who is the center of our lives still brings encouragement and gives perspective when times are hard and keeps us singing when life is good.” The Gaither Family Resources Fall Festival takes place September 21-22. Matt Best and his son Jeremiah.
LOCAL FATHER & SON TALK IMPACT OF BOY SCOUTS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
Matt Best and his son, Jeremiah, Fishers, have found that “doing a good turn daily” as Eagle Scouts has greatly enriched their lives and vastly improved their community.
Scout, we figured out the value of ‘Be Prepared’ and ‘Do a Good Turn Daily’ that leads to service to others. Then the Scouts’ Oath and Law add the characteristics of what we call Scout Spirit.
Jeremiah, 16, became an Eagle Scout on Dec. 21, 2017, exactly 23 years to the day after Matt became one.
“Through life, living with that spirit has helped me in every aspect, whether it be my time in the military, being a good husband and father, a good friend or a strong citizen and employee.”
“Becoming an Eagle Scout has helped me grow and do good things in my life and for others,” Jeremiah says. “I have made good friends and had some amazing adventures.”
In order to be an Eagle Scout, Matt explained that individuals have to be registered with the Boy Scouts of America, and work their way through the ranks.
Matt, a Scoutmaster, says being an Eagle Scout has had a profound impact on his life as well.
The ranks are Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle.
“Having the values instilled in me from Scouts has guided my life,” Matt says. “From an early age in Cub Scouts, we are taught to ‘Do Your Best.’ Later, as a Boy
“You first learn as a Scout what it means to be a Scout, including the Oath and Law that we live by,” Matt says. “You build on that and become proficient in scout skills like cooking, citizenship, camping and outdoor 28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2018 / atFishers.com
ethics, first aid, family life and fitness, among many other things.” The next ranks focus on leadership, according to Matt. Scouts learn to lead themselves and others while building on their skills and developing strong moral character. “Along the way, you must also show your proficiency in learning new skills by completing Merit Badges, some that are required of every Eagle Scout, and others that you can elect to learn based on your personal interests,” Matt adds. Finally, after a Scout has completed the required merit badges, worked their way through the ranks and served their unit in a series of leadership positions, it's time for the Eagle Scout project. “The Eagle Scout project is chosen by the Eagle Scout candidate and must benefit the community outside of scouting,”
Matt says. “The project is planned and executed at the leadership of the Eagle Scout candidate and approved and assisted by the scout's mentors.” After the project is complete, the Scout appears before a board of review to assess every aspect of the Scout’s career and project for testament of the character of an Eagle Scout. “Finally, the scout's records are reviewed by the Boy Scouts of America for the Scout to be recognized as an Eagle Scout,” Matt says.
“It’s knowing that they can learn new skills and be a leader,” Matt says. “They are a person that can be trusted, courteous and will add value. They will do their best, and they will most likely exceed any expectation you may have.” Jeremiah agrees and encourages other kids to join The Boy Scouts. “I would tell them that Scouts is a lot of fun, and there are a lot of good people in Scouts that will teach you things,” Jeremiah says.
Jeremiah noted that his dad has been a positive influence. “Dad has taught me that I can do what I dream of if I try hard and don't give up,” Jeremiah says. “ I know how people depend on me to help and that it is up to me to make a difference. I recommend Scouts to everyone, and if you can't be a Scout, you can still change what you can to make things better. I'm going to continue to be Scout-like all my life because what I do matters.”
Being aware that Jeremiah has a strong foundation to grow from gives Matt a sense of security about Jeremiah’s future. “Knowing that he has had the positive impact of so many Scouters in his life tells me that he has those influences to build his life on,” Matt says. “He is an amazing young man who has already given so much, and now he is working at a Boy Scout summer camp, passing the spirit on to the next generation and building a legacy of his own. Now I get the pleasure of helping my daughter, Amber, who is currently working on her silver award in Girl Scouts, working on becoming an Eagle Scout, along with her Girl Scout Gold Award.” Matt says the best part about working as a Scoutmaster is being a servant to young people and their families. “To see a Scout become a person of strong character and spirit gives me assurance in the future,” Matt says. “The best feeling in the world is seeing the pride in a young person when that moment of accomplishment happens. Building a legacy that I will never know the extent of and is so much larger than myself.” Matt added that the value of an Eagle Scout is knowing the measure of the person in front of you and the strength of their character. atFishers.com / SEPTEMBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 29
