emember when the library was a place for scholars to work on projects, spread out with their books and materials and have access to resources they didn’t have at home? It is once again thanks to the Ignite Studio a 15,000 square foot makerspace located in the basement of the Fishers library. A makerspace is a new trend in education where people with shared interests come together in order to share ideas, knowledge and work on projects. While the Ignite Studio is an arts-focused makerspace, others around the country are focused on science and other disciplines.

“The Ignite Studio came out of focus groups in the community that expressed an overwhelming desire to have more opportunity for folks to explore their creative side, complete arts-related academic projects, dabble in new interests and teach others,” says Katelyn Coyne, the

The Ignite Studio has it all including both clean and messy areas in which to spread out and work, cleaning supplies that can be used by patrons, long-term storage space that can be checked out just like a library book as well as four digital media labs. The studio also has a fabrication lab

decided to take on this challenge, which is a natural evolution of library services and a way to help the brick and mortar building continue to have relevance in the community,” Coyne says. One of the hallmarks of the Ignite Studio are the plastic totes and other supplies (such as sewing machines) that can be checked out and used during an Ignite session. The plastic totes contain all the supplies one might need to discover a new area of interest or enjoy a favorite one that you may not have the room at home to pursue. “We do not offer classes in these specific activities, but our totes include books, supplies and suggested projects so that you can explore an interest without having to make a big investment,” Coyne says. For example, someone who is interested in oil pastels can check out a tote, which contains a wide range of chalk-like pastels, the specific type of paper geared for the medium and a book that outlines a few techniques one can try out during their twohour session. “Ignite had its soft opening on June 25 before our grand opening on July 21 and so far, the reception has been very positive,” Coyne says. “I think people are very surprised by the concept, and we’ve been working hard to help people understand the intended use of the space and what can be accomplished there.” Coyne says that as patrons have toured the new makerspace, their jaws drop at the possibilities, and she expects those possibilities will change as the Ignite Studio grows and evolves over time. “We want to be a user organized space so that we respond to the needs of those who use the studio to complete their work and discover new passions,” she says. “It’s the natural progression of what a library can be.” For more information on the Ignite Studio, visit hepl.lib.in.us/ignite. Hoosier Road Elementary Welcomes New Principal Jenifer Ricketts Writer / Josh Brown Photographer / Ron Wise

She’s only been on the job for about three months, but Jenifer Ricketts feels right at home and is learning rather quickly. Ricketts is the new principal at Hoosier Road Elementary, where she officially started on July 1 after a busy summer of meeting staff and getting prepared for the school year. She has since shaken off those first-day-of-school jitters and fully settled into her new role. “I’m really excited to be here,” Ricketts says.

“It is a great fit for so many reasons. I have felt so welcomed. All the staff has been inviting and open about their experiences here. I’ve gotten to meet parents and families, and they love the school. They’ve done their research on me and have been very welcoming.” Ricketts knows a thing or two about education, and it’s no surprise where she is today. She says education runs in her blood. Her father taught for more than 40 years and her grandparents were teachers as well. So, she’s grown up with teacher role models and it was always a career path that stuck in the back of her mind as she got older atFishers.com / OCTOBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11

and developed a passion of her own for education. Her resume doesn’t hurt, either. Ricketts taught for nearly a decade, including eight years at Durbin Elementary in Noblesville. She then became assistant principal at Noblesville in 2014 before serving as assistant principal at Fishers Elementary from 2016 to 2018. “I love working with kids, and I love working with people,” she says. “Education has been a really good fit for me and what drives me as far as an opportunity to impact people. Every day is different and

flies by. It has been busy. I’ve been in administration for nearly 15 years and have always heard great things about Hoosier Road Elementary. The school is very innovative in how they are teaching the kids and that drew me too.”

With her first year underway, Principal Ricketts says she is mainly focused on connecting with the community, faculty and students. Her main goal is establishing those relationships and building upon them as she looks toward the future of the school. “I want to build on the momentum HRE has had in past years,” Ricketts says. “We want our students to be kind, caring and confident as they grow. The academics are obviously important, but any impact we can make on children and who they are is very important, too. I always keep in the back of my mind: ‘If my kids went to school here, what would I want for them?’ “Education is always changing,” she adds. “As we learn more and reflect, we change our practices. We will be reflective of what we already have in place here. I’m sure that will drive changes in the future, but there is nothing I’m coming in looking to change right away.” The topic of school safety continues to be at the forefront for administrators. HRE is no different. Ricketts says the school will continue to have, as they have in the past, a Student Resource Officer on hand at the campus. This year, the police officer will spend some time around the school, and during lunch, building rapport with students and answering any questions they might have. Ricketts says HSE’s mental health initiative, which provides a certified mental health therapist through Community North, is another critical piece to student safety and well being. “We are able to serve so many families and so many kids in that

way,” Ricketts says. “When you think about a long-term solution of kids feeling safe, feeling valued and that they have a place, those things, hopefully, will slow down this epidemic of school violence. Those kids that might be struggling will have a support system in place.” As for Ricketts personally, she grew up in Peru, Indiana and is now a Fishers resident with her husband Hank and three kids of her own — one stepson, Dylan, in college at IU and two girls, Claire, who is heading to kindergarten next year, and Kate, who is two years old. “We love the Fishers community,” Ricketts says. “It is a great place to raise a family. My husband has lived here virtually his whole life. Overall, I have an open door policy at school. So I encourage parents to stop by or feel free to email or call me with any questions or concerns. I want to encourage that communication with families and students. We are here to help them.”

Principal Jenifer Ricketts previously served as assistant principal at Fishers Elementary from 2016 to 2018.

Halloween is the best, but there is one big challenge that comes with this spooky holiday — figuring out what to do with all of the leftover candy. I’ve had those years when you think four jumbo bags will be enough and still end up sending my husband to the store because we’ve gone through it in 30 minutes. But inevitably, you end up with too much whether from your own stash or your trick-or-treater’s. So that’s why you’ll find a number of Hamilton County area Candy Buyback options at the end of this article. First, here is a recipe for my favorite way to use up a little extra Halloween candy. Halloween Candy Cookie Pizza Ingredients:

• Chocolate chip cookie dough • 1/4 c peanut butter • 3/4 c Milk Chocolate Morsels • Candy bars of your choice • Candy eyes and Halloween sprinkles {optional} Directions:

Let the cookie dough sit out of the fridge for a half hour. Spread out cookie dough on a pizza pan, being sure to use cookie spray on the pan. Bake according to directions on the packaging. I used the shortest amount of time to start and kept an eye until it was the perfect golden brown. While the cookie is warm out of the oven, dollop the peanut butter and sprinkle the chocolate morsels evenly. Smear the two together to make the ‘pizza sauce.’ If you’re a peanut butter lover, switch the ratio of chocolate to peanut butter. Chop the candy bars into chunks and sprinkle evenly throughout the pizza. Add the candy eyes and Halloween sprinkles for a festive flair. Cut and serve. Best eaten warm from the oven and with a glass of cold milk. 14 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atFishers.com

LEARNINGRX 9767 Fall Creek Road Indianapolis, IN 46256 317-845-1999 learningrx.com

How LearningRx Transformed a Young Girl’s Self Image At nine years old, Callie Pinkley was already feeling defeated in school. “Callie had been struggling with reading, comprehension, spelling, memory and processing information,” says her mother Kendra. “She had been receiving tutoring from her teacher, but it wasn’t making an impact. At home, it was always a fight. Fighting to get her to read, to do homework, fighting because she couldn’t remember a word she read two sentences earlier. She hated reading and would often say, ‘I’m stupid.’ She continually struggled despite interventions which never worked. Due to low reading skills, her teacher was suggesting that Callie repeat the second grade. Callie was not on track to pass the IRead and IStep testing. I didn’t know what to do. Then I heard the LearningRx commercial, and it was speaking directly to us, offering hope for Callie’s struggle.” Licensed LearningRx staff tested Callie to pinpoint the exact cause of Callie’s learning struggles.

include improved grades (now on honor roll), advancing three reading levels, greatly improved comprehension, better focus and attention, higher self-confidence and her greatest accomplishment this year — easily passing the IRead test. “Though every student is different, Callie’s improvements are typical at LearningRx,” says Heather Koenig. “On average, we see at least a 3-year increase in reading and comprehension and an IQ score increase of 15-21 points. That is life changing for a struggling student. Parents come to LearningRx not for a band-aid, but for a permanent fix. About 80 percent of learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain processes information. “We are able to pinpoint the underlying cause of the struggle and create a customized brain training solution that makes learning easier and faster. Students

come in struggling and are transformed in as little as four to six months. The learning skills were already there, we just needed to get to them to unlock the full potential.” Callie graduated from her program several months ago and Kendra is continually amazed at how well Callie is doing and still improving. “We are truly grateful for LearningRx for the permanent changes in our daughter and would highly recommend it to anyone who is struggling in school, home or life skills,” Kendra adds. It’s time to find out why your student continues to struggle despite teaching and tutoring. Find a solution that lasts a lifetime. Brain Training is Life Changing! Call LearningRx today at 317-845-1999 and mention Callie’s story to get $50 off cognitive testing.

“Callie showed severe deficits in certain cognitive skills that are necessary to learn, read and comprehend information,” says Heather Koenig, Director of LearningRx Indianapolis. “Callie had weaker skills like attention, processing speed, auditory processing, memory, logic and reasoning, keeping her from reaching her full potential.” Callie’s action plan was a six-month oneon-one cognitive brain training program at LearningRx. The transformation became obvious by all, including Callie’s teacher, Sarah Miller, who came to Callie’s program graduation. Callie’s amazing improvements

THE ACADEMY VOLLEYBALL CLUB 6635 E 30th St. Suite B Indianapolis IN, 46219 theacademyvolleyball.com 317-545-3880 Writer / Julie Young

If your child is looking to learn a new sport or is eager to take their skills to the next level, The Academy Volleyball Club is ready to serve you. Founded in 2014 by a group of parents and coaches passionate about volleyball and possessing a desire to share the sport with others, The Academy Volleyball Club is a place where athletes of all ages learn to play, train and love volleyball. Headquartered in a 70,000 square-foot facility on the near eastside of Indianapolis, The Academy has additional locations at Grand Park in Westfield and Legacy Courts in Lafayette. “We offer opportunities to every player regardless of their experience or skill level,” says Executive Director Emily Hawthorne. “We know that every athlete is coming to us with a different story and background with the sport, so we provide several different ways for them to get involved, whether that be through one of our club teams, summer camps, beach program, little spikers or even private lessons." A quality experience is at the heart of every program at The Academy. Players ages 4 through 9 can take part in a Little Spikers clinic to learn the fundamentals of the game, while boys and girls ages 6-18 can take part in a variety of training opportunities offered year-round that will continue to build on their skills. The fall youth league is one of the club’s top youth programs, with more than 500 young athletes training each week in the fall, between the three locations. While building youth players is a focus at The Academy, their success in advancing their top players into the collegiate ranks is also a priority. Club teams allow athletes with several months of focused training, strong competition and ongoing development.

Each year, more than a dozen upperclassmen commit to continue their playing careers at the college level, a dream come true for many of them. This past season, Freshman Raven Colvin committed to Purdue University, marking the first Big Ten commitment for the young club. “We are not a one-size-fits-all organization,” Hawthorne adds. “We pride ourselves on our personalized service, welcoming atmosphere, caring staff and knowledgeable coaches who care about player development both on and off the court." Although they are one of the largest volleyball clubs in the state, they maintain the feel of a smaller, intimate club. The Academy cares about keeping costs affordable for families. while providing an exceptional experience. With its extensive fundraising programs, non-travel teams and extended payment plans, The Academy is one of the most budget-friendly clubs in Indiana and committed to making every dollar go as far as possible. “The Academy has been a home away from home for my daughter and family these past few years,” says Robin Snyder, mother of Jill, a club player. Not only have her skills improved, but her confidence, knowledge and love of the game have increased as well. We can really tell that the coaches care about their athletes and the gyms have such a welcoming atmosphere. Being a part of The Academy family has been such a positive thing for us.” For those wanting to become a part of a club team at The Academy, your opportunity is quickly approaching. Club tryouts for 2nd to 8th graders begin in mid-October at all locations. Tryouts for 9th– 12th graders begin in early November. All locations also provide free pre-tryout open gyms this fall, to encourage athletes and their families to visit the facilities, meet coaches and train with some of their top youth and club coaches. The Academy Volleyball Club is located at 6635 E 30th St. Suite B, Indianapolis. Information on all three locations can be found online at theacademyvolleyball.com or by giving them a call at 317-545-3880.

CANDLELIGHT THEATRE at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site 1230 N. Delaware Indianapolis, IN 46202 317-631-1888 candlelighttheatre.org

CHANGING THE WAY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HISTORY AND THE THEATRE When you visit Candlelight Theatre at a stunning Italianate mansion in historic downtown Indianapolis, you experience a piece of history that will likely stick with you forever. As a guest, you get to sit in the same room former U.S. president Benjamin Harrison sat in when he lived in the home.

More than 15 years ago, Creative Director Donna Wing performed at the Harrison’s national historic landmark residence for a Halloween event. She had dreamt of starting her own theatre company, and she had been looking for a distinctive venue. Wing, a former dancer, actor and model in New York and Tulsa, had an epiphany walking through the home. “This would be an awesome place to perform theatre,” she realized.

It is a unique partnership between the theatre company and the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Candlelight Theatre is the only program in the country performing staged theatre in a former U.S. President’s home.

Instantly Wing began to visualize an audience immersed in the rooms and what it would look like to perform there. It all came together in her mind. Her dreams were further validated when she later realized that President Harrison’s wife, Caroline, actually

hosted theatre performances in the home. “Caroline had a wagon placed in the library and they were performing by candlelight,” says Wing in regards to the inspiration for the theatre’s name. After a 90-minute meeting with the former Presidential Site CEO Phyllis Geeslin, Candlelight Theatre opened its curtains a year later in 2004. Since that time, the partnership has continued to flourish and grow. In 2014, Wing and new CEO Charles Hyde discussed how to further increase Candlelight Theatre’s impact. That conversation resulted in doubling annual productions.

Wing is proud of the partnership and the success that the Candlelight Theatre has experienced in the last 15 years. “As a national landmark, the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site attracts people from all over the globe,” she says. “This venue is unlike any other in the world.” For more information about the Candlelight Theatre and where you can purchase tickets, visit CandlelightTheatre.org or call 317-631-1888 and make plans to attend a performance during the 2018-2019 season. All proceeds go right back to the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site.

Wing, joined by Playwright in Residence James Trofatter, along with seasoned actors, now produce four plays a year at the Candlelight Theatre. They offer a combination of distinctive mysteries, comedies and historically-inspired plays brought together with ambient candlelight. It all comes together to create a one of a kind experience that keeps patrons coming back. These high quality productions are unique in style and theme, and almost always sell out. Fall performances have a ghostly, Halloween theme where audiences experience the entire mansion. Winter features favorite holiday traditions and folklore. The spring production includes a full evening of theatre with three short-act mysteries performed intimately, each using a room in salon style. Summer is hosted either at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site or a specially selected satellite location where guests are seated in a traditional theatre setting for a full-length play. With a nationally-significant collection of over 10,000 artifacts, and 75-80% of the furnishings in the home original to the Harrison family, this accredited museum exudes special authenticity as a theatre venue. The original furniture in the home has been maintained and is kept in the rooms for guests to see during the performances. The furnishings serve as a stage unlike any other, and add a deep layer of history to the overall experience. The combination of venue and unique theatre offerings have built a strong local following. Season ticket holder Marian Haerle is one of many who keep coming back. “I enjoy theater as well as history,” Haerle says. “Candlelight Theatre allows me to combine great acting in a historical setting. I am always excited to share the experience with family and friends. I have gone so far as to become a member of the Benjamin Harrison [Presidential Site] and a season ticket holder for the theatre. The theatre is not only entertaining but gives me a chance to learn as well.”

future seasons to come!

With the hot summer days comes a slight tendency to desire her to come to an end. Fall brings such a welcome relief to Indiana gardeners. It is the most glorious season for Hoosiers, what with the fall color and fun autumn weekends with tailgates and bonfires. If autumn were a family member, she would most certainly be your mom. She is beautiful, full of activity, brings a wonderful harvest to the family dinner table and swift to teach us to prepare for the

Autumn rains and chilly nights bring on a quick shift in the amount of time left to complete our many outdoor tasks before the hustle of the holiday season begins. This is the time to pack it up, folks! Putting the garden to ‘bed’ for a long winter’s nap is important to her health and important to the abundance of success for the following spring growing season. Remove any plant foliage that has gone to INDY METRO / OCTOBER 2018 / TownePost.com

seed and died back, if left in the garden it will create disease and fungus. No one likes fungus among us! Mulch over any tender perennials so that the winter’s freezing and thawing won’t make the root balls of the plants heave up close to the surface, which then allows them to freeze and die. One of my favorite tasks is planting an abundance of spring flowering bulbs, do you know why? Because I constantly forget what I have planted and where, then when spring comes it is a wonderful surprise.

Croms, however, I make sure I lift and sort out the old from the new croms, let them dry a bit and store them in a box of sawdust indoors, away from varmints. This allows the flowers, like your gladioli and begonias, to stay healthy for the spring planting season to come. Now, a quick word on chemicals, not all are terrible and some are utterly necessary if you want to grow flowers, like roses. But find organic types if you can. And please note that using last year’s chemicals only creates a stronger infestation, due to the fact that a weakened, older chemical is easier to survive as a beetle and strengthens the insect’s resolve, manifesting in a resistant strain of insect that can beat the system. Water features, ponds and fountains need to be cleaned out of autumn falling leaves, drained and covered. I keep our pond running with a heater for the winter, it is always so beautiful when the ground is covered in snow. I use nice hunter green tarps with elastic cords to cover our fountains for the winter, this way it is not too unsightly. Cuttings from the plants you love are a wonderful way to keep the garden growing indoors during the long winter months. I bring indoors some tender annuals and make cutting of my Coleus, Salvia and Hydrangeas. I place the cutting in a terra cotta pot and place in a sunny window. Keeping everything well watered. You will have new garden family members in no time. Enjoy these glorious months ahead, get outdoors and get busy. Wash windows to let in the abundant sunshine and fill your family harvest table with delicious meals of soups and stews. Keep visiting the farmer’s markets as they come to a close and mostly give thanks. Be proud to be a Hoosier, because we truly live in one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Just all a part of helping you all, “Grow a More Beautiful Life!”

FALL GARDEN CHECK LIST • Compost your annuals • Plant a multitude of spring flowering bulbs • Save seeds from flower heads, dry on newspaper and store airtight • Journal the year’s successes, failures and needed changes • Keep up with leaf removal • Fall application of lawn weed and feed • Empty gardening containers, disinfect well and store • Cut dried Hydrangeas and bring indoors for fall arrangements • Service outdoor equipment • Sharpen, oil and store gardening tools • Add good compost to the garden beds & turn under • Wash windows to let as much sunshine in for winter months • Drain hoses and turn off spigots to prevent freeze • Make any outdoor repairs now • Roast some marshmallows

DUKE ENERGY, IVY TECH PARTNER TO BRING UNIQUE SCHOLARSHIP FOR HSE STUDENTS Writer / Benjamin Lashar Photography Provided

It is hardly news that college can be a financial strain, but now Fishers students can rest a little easier. Two titans of Indiana business, Ivy Tech and Duke energy, have partnered to create a truly unique scholarship. The Duke Energy Scholarship is rewarded to students of Hamilton Southeastern High School and Fishers High School who are taking Ivy Tech’s high school program. During afternoons, these high school students would take Ivy Tech classes about either STEM fields or high-pay, highdemand positions. If high schoolers wish to continue pursuing the Ivy Tech classes, then the Duke Energy scholarship allows them to become full-time students. From 2017 to 2018, the scholarship has raised $41,000 to help 21 Hamilton County students enroll in Ivy Tech. Dr. Dan Clark, Vice Chancellor of Ivy Tech Noblesville, notes the value of students

attending full time. “Most community college students have a hard time going full time,” Dr. Clark says. “These students, because of the scholarships, are able to go full time.” Between the high school program and the scholarship, most of these students will earn an associate’s degree within two years while accumulating minimal debt. From there, students have the freedom to either continue toward their bachelor’s degree or head straight into the workforce. While classes offer a variety of subjects, including cybersecurity and architecture, some of Dr. Clark’s favorite programs are informatics and construction. Informatics, the study of processing information, is useful because it allows a variety of job choices nowadays. Dr. Clark also says construction is useful because, “the construction industry is strong right now, so there’s a big demand for carpenters and electricians.” The scholarship’s most interesting aspect 26 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atFishers.com

is recruitment. Instead of requiring essays or arduous application processes, school counselors spearhead the effort. They identify eligible students and offer them the scholarship. From there, Dr. Clark notes how inclusive the scholarship is. “The students themselves select it,” Dr. Clark says. “We don’t reject anybody. We give any student who wants to participate an opportunity to participate.” Without a doubt, the biggest advantage of Ivy Tech and Duke Energy’s scholarship is low-cost trial and error. We live at a time where people are questioning the four-year college path. A plethora of graduates take up the burden of college debt to spend four years of their life for a degree they might not even use. Ivy Tech and Duke energy allow people to try out a practical career at little cost. Afterward, every student can decide if their individual path leads to a bachelor’s degree or a fast track to the workforce. Either way, Ivy Tech and Duke Energy are making a strong investment in local students.

14th Annual Indiana Renaissance Faire Returns Oct. 6-7 Writer / Jocelyn Vare Photography Provided By Jason Fivush, Stan Seigla

Fourteen years ago, Adam and Andrea Fivush made a U-turn. The Fishers couple spontaneously turned their car around and – Huzzah! Ever since, they’ve served as leaders at one of our community’s largest and beloved events – the Indiana Renaissance Faire. The couple had moved to Fishers from North Carolina, where Adam had been involved with a renaissance faire event. “One day, in 2004, Andrea and I were driving near the Fishers library and we saw a sign for auditions to participate in the first Fishers Renaissance Faire,” Adam says. “We

immediately turned the car around, walked into the audition and volunteered to help with the planning of the event. We’ve been a part of our community’s annual renaissance faire ever since.” As the event has grown over the years, so has the role that Adam and Andrea have played in its production and planning. The Fishers residents are the volunteer directors of the country’s largest one-weekend renaissance faire, now called the Indiana Renaissance Faire. The 14th annual Indiana Renaissance Faire will be held on Saturday-Sunday, October 6-7 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center in Noblesville. The event is held rain or shine and has grown to an annual 28 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2018 / atFishers.com

attendance of more than 15,000 visitors. “About half of the attendees arrive in Elizabethan era costumes,” Andrea says. “About 40 percent of attendees travel from outside Indiana to attend the event.” The first Fishers Renaissance Faire was held at Heritage Park in Fishers. The faire was an idea of Diane Eaton and Walt Bagot, who were participants of Sister Cities Association of Fishers Indiana. This local non-profit organization cultivated a relationship between the City of Fishers and its international sister city, Billericay, England. Billericay (pronounced Bill-er-ICK-ee) is a northeast suburb of London, just like Fishers is a northeast suburb of

Indianapolis. Billericay Park at 126th Street and Promise Road is named for Fishers’ sister city in Essex, UK. Eaton and Bagot’s idea was to create a signature event to connect Fishers residents to the culture of Billericay, an English community that has proudly preserved their centuries of history. The Indiana Renaissance Faire transports visitors to Billericay in the year 1579, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. In fact, actual names of establishments and people who lived in Billericay in the 1500s are featured at the faire. Billericay is believed to be the site of the first open-air market which was held during the fall harvest centuries ago. The Indiana Renaissance Faire replicates Billericay’s market by presenting more than 70 artisans and merchants and plentiful food vendors in a vibrant, open-air environment. “There will also be an over-21 beer garden, roving entertainers and activities just for

Every renaissance faire is known for costumed performers and the Indiana Renaissance Faire is no exception.

These volunteer performers are trained in street theater and create their own historically-inspired costumes. Like Conner Prairie interpreters, the cast members stay in character as they interact with visitors to entertain and bring the historical era to life.

“There will be 150 cast members at this year’s faire,” says Andrea, who serves as the event’s cast director.

“Visitors will encounter Queen Elizabeth I and her court, Billericay villagers and English-folklore fairies,” Andrea says.

Jousting competitions are a favorite part of the event, too. Knights of Valor is a professional jousting troupe who rides large war horses while wearing authentic armor and wielding real lances. These are true, full-contact jousts that take place in the arena twice each day during the Indiana Renaissance Faire. Other performers are a fire-breather, The Rogue Blades swordfighting comedy, Punch & Judy puppet show and Chaste Treasure, a trio of upper class ladies who sing and sass. Adam and Andrea are not just the leaders of the renaissance faire, they are performers too. They take the stage as musicians in Fishers’ only pirate band. The Fivushes teamed up with an accomplished musician, Tim Hoke, to form the ensemble years ago. Together, the trio is Red Rum, a costumed pirate folk band that entertains audiences with sea shanties, pub classics and nautical tunes. Red Rum just released their second album, “Save the Ales,” and was a featured performer at GenCon Indy recently. At the 2018 Indiana Renaissance Faire, a new front gate will be unveiled. The gate was designed, constructed and installed just for the Indiana Renaissance Faire and will transport visitors from 2018 Fishers to 1579 England as they enter. A new partnership debuts this year with the Indiana Blood Center, who will be on-site accepting blood donations. Legions of volunteers have joined the Fivush family to create the Indiana Renaissance Faire for each of the past 14 years. Adam and Andrea’s son, Jason, attended his first faire when he was five years old. He is now a student at HSE High School and contributes to many facets of the event, including set-up and photography. It is a family affair and a labor of love. “Andrea and I have been married for many years and we are best friends,” Adam says. “We are good partners in the things we enjoy together, like the Indiana Renaissance Faire and the Red Rum band. We have fun together and that’s more important than anything else.”

MAX CHALLENGE OF FISHERS Client Profile: Tom Britt While I wanted to lose some stubborn fat that had slowly crept into my beltline over the past five years, I also wanted to make some dietary changes. When I met Chad Tunison with the Max Challenge of Fishers back in February, he was in our conference room talking about their unique approach to diet and exercise. Over the years, I guess I’ve become a bit jaded by the fitness industry in general. I was ready for something different, so I signed up to be their first client in Fishers. At the kick-off event on Sunday, June 24, the founder of Max Challenge, Bryan Klein, came and spoke to approximately 100 people that had signed up for the inaugural 10-week challenge. He explained the importance and timing of eating right along with the five-days-a-week commitment to come to a 45-minute exercise class. The only “group” exercise I’ve ever done was with the Geist Jazzercise wearing a “suns out, guns out” t-shirt for charity. One thing Bryan said stuck with me, and honestly it motivated me throughout the 10 weeks. “For every pound you lose, you’ll gain two pounds of confidence,” he said. So, Monday morning rolls around, I weigh in at 189 pounds and snap a few photos. It’s hard to “see” weight coming off, but it’s easy to see the numbers on a digital scale decrease. The 10-week challenge was “on like Donkey Kong.” I found the classes fun - the atmosphere of positive energy and motivation far surpassed the agony of burpees or planking. My “home” class was the 5:30 pm time slot, but I visited the 9:45 am class quite often when I had evening schedule conflicts. Everyone was there for the same reason: to get healthier.

As the weeks progressed, the soreness subsided, my stamina increased and I started grabbing heavier weights. Oh, and the fat started coming off, too. On the last Friday of the challenge, I woke up and anxiously weighed in at 173 pounds, down 16 pounds from where I started. I snapped some photos again and started trying on old blue jeans that I haven’t been able to wear in more than 4 years. Not only did they fit again, they were loose! What makes Max Challenge different is their approach to a healthy lifestyle by helping you tackle both diet and exercise. In my opinion, they accomplish this through their “secret sauce” – positive reinforcement. One of my new Max Challenge friends, Patrick Warner, said it best when he said, “I had a membership to the gym, now I have a family.” After the 10-week challenge is over, you have the option to join their Legacy program. For $99/month, you can come to as many classes as you want and follow their Legacy dietary guidelines. For those that have more weight to lose, they typically do the 10-week program again and again until they reach their goal. For me, I’m going back to stay in shape and keep up with my new diet and hang out with my new Max Challenge family. My “secret weapon” was having my wife,

Jeanne, following the diet plan with me. We both changed a lot of bad eating habits and found a new love of vegetables, lean meats and Ezekiel bread. I tease Jeanne that she needs to pay for half of my challenge since she lost weight, too. Special thanks to Chad, Charly, Sheila and Steve Tunison for bringing this awesome experience to Fishers. Also, a big “thank you” to my group trainer for most of those 10-week classes, Rachel Schaller. And to all my fellow inaugural class challengers – keep “clapping it up.”

THE CHALLENGE STARTS Sept. 24th Can’t start on the 24th? That’s okay, we have members starting their own 10 week challenge every week, and you can join us at any time. Every day, tens of thousands of people nationwide are working towards reaching their health and fitness goals with THE MAX Challenge. Our combination of exciting fitness classes, nutrition coaching, and motivation help our members to achieve INCREDIBLE results in JUST 10 WEEKS!

If you’ve been a car buyer in the Indianapolis area over the years, there’s a good chance you’ve visited an Ed Martin dealership along the way. The Ed Martin Automotive Group has two Indianapolis dealerships, two Carmel dealerships, three Anderson dealerships, one in Fishers, and, recently, the company expanded its operations on the north side with Ed Martin Toyota in Noblesville. The new location is located off State Road 37. Though Ed Martin Toyota has The company celebrated the grand opening a Noblesville address, it is right down the on August 16 with a ribbon cutting road from Pinheads and Burritos & Beer in ceremony then kept the party going on Fishers. The new dealership is sure to draw August 18 as the celebration was opened up customers from all over the north side and to the public with food trucks and a large surrounding Indianapolis areas.

“When Toyota was in Anderson, people were coming from this side of town to buy cars from us,” Kathy adds. “It is exciting now to be in their backyard. People are thrilled that we are closer to them with these locations.”

Being a family-owned company for more than 60 years, it is no surprise that a sense of community and giving back is important to the Harrisons. Mark and Kathy are north side residents as well, living in the Geist area. Over the years, they have stayed involved with local organizations and charities and that will continue to be a focus with Ed Martin Toyota as well. “We have supported Lawrence Township Schools with well over a million dollars,” Kathy says. “We do that through our Ed Martin Legacy Fund Scholarship Program, The McKenzie Career Center, Ed Martin Automotive Careers Training Center, the Lawrence Township Foundation and general support of all of the Lawrence Township Schools. We’ve also made donations to HSE and Noblesville in various ways. We are big supporters of the school systems and that will continue.” Ed Martin has also supported Conner Prairie and sponsored Spark!Fishers this year. The automotive group has already reached out to the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce with plans to get involved in more Noblesville organizations and events as well. When you look back on the history of the company, Ed Martin’s life was seemingly mapped out for him at an early age. Martin’s parents were both successful attorneys, and his father was a Supreme Court Justice for Indiana. It was an afterthought that Ed too would go on to law school and carry the mantle, but he had different plans.

- MARK HARRISON, PRESIDENT OF THE ED MARTIN AUTOMOTIVE GROUP

At just 16 years old, Ed bought his first car in 1946 and later sold it in his parent’s front yard and, just like that, he was hooked. “My dad was such an amazing man,” Kathy says. “He lived the American dream. The reason we are here today is because of one man and his dream. He grew up on Delaware Street in Indianapolis selling ice in the neighborhood and delivering groceries, but he wanted to sell cars. He loved cars. He slowly built this thing, and here we are today.” atFishers.com / OCTOBER 2018 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 33

More than 60 years later, the Ed Martin Automotive Group is now made up of 12 franchises in nine locations. Ed Martin’s legacy lives on through his daughter Kathy and his son in law Mark at the helm as president. Ed passed away in May of 2005, but Kathy says if her father were here today she believes he would be proud. “My dad now has his name on the largest Toyota dealership in Indiana,” Kathy says. “My heart swells with pride and joy thinking about that. I didn’t realize growing up what a pillar of Indianapolis that he was. It makes me so proud today. I am happy to carry on his dream.”

amenities here in Fishers.”

The Towne Post Live series continued August 10 at Cyntheanne Park for the monthly Fishers Friday live show. This time, Fishers Magazine publisher Tom Britt was joined by former pro wrestler turned realtor, Kevin Fertig, Steve Cage with Cage Campus and former Director of Parks & Recreation Tony Elliot.

“Fishers is committed to developing these courts,” Elliot adds. “We reached out to the community and raised a lot of money. Steve Cage is arguably one of the most passionate people in our community when it comes to pickleball. His donation was very generous and helped us reach our goal.”

In early August, Cage, a local entrepreneur, made a $63,000 donation to the Fishers Parks Foundation for the addition of two challenge courts at Cyntheanne Park. The eight courts at the park will be renamed Cage Pickleball. The additional courts are scheduled to open this fall.

Pickleball, a game that resembles a mixture of tennis and ping pong, is one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. The courts, layout wise, are quite similar to tennis courts albeit much smaller. The game is server-based scoring, uses a wiffleball with a large paddle, and the first person or team to reach 11 points wins.

“About a year ago, two friends got me into pickleball,” Cage says. “It is a lot of fun and gives opportunities for people of any age to stay fit and play. I am grateful for the opportunity to help expand the world-class

Because the courts are smaller, matches aren’t that long and pickleball requires more finesse, which has made the sport popular with all ages but especially those over 40 or 50 years old.

If you haven’t stopped by the courts yet, make sure to visit Cyntheanne Park in Fishers and try out pickleball. A special thanks to all guests who joined us for the show. Just a few short weeks after this Towne Post Live show, the City of Fishers announced the resignation of Parks & Recreation Director Tony Elliot. Elliot now resides in California as the Parks & Recreation Director for the City of Santa Cruz. Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness named Sarah Sandquist as the new Director of Parks & Recreation. She officially started on August 31. For more Towne Post Live shows, be sure to visit live.townepost.com or subscribe to the YouTube channel — TownePost LIVE.
