WESTMINSTER VILLAGE NORTH 11050 Presbyterian Drive Indianapolis, IN 317-823-6841 westminstervillage.com

Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Westminster Village North, a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), offers a continuum of options for elder care that can ease anxiety for seniors and their families. Located on 57 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, the complex includes options for independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care. “As individuals and couples retire and get older, they often consider moving into a smaller house,” says Laura Roman, director of marketing and public relations. “But what is the step after that? Once we get older, we know our health will change. If people give some thought to what is down the pike they may think, ‘Do I want my kids to make the choice for my care in case my needs become complex, or is it something I’d like to consider now?’” As a CCRC, the supportive community at Westminster Village North ensures that as health needs change, individuals can move seamlessly into a different living situation. Independent living choices include cottages, luxury apartments and ranch homes, in which occupants never have to worry about yard work or maintenance. The staff is diligent about making sure everything is in tip-top

shape and in working order. As situations change, additional steps to meet individual needs include assisted living, memory care or the skilled nursing community. “Sometimes people get overwhelmed,” Roman says. “Seniors themselves, or children of seniors, are concerned about safety. Fears about not taking medication regularly, not eating properly, or even carrying baskets of laundry down basement stairs to the washing machine are very real worries.”

Our oldest Roman says a CCRC provides a safety net resident is 105 and we have six residents for all residents, and nurses are on duty over the age of 100. I truly believe that around the clock. they have lived so long in part because they “Most residents wear a lanyard, and all they made the choice to reside in a place where they received necessary support when their have to do is push a button for immediate help,” she says. “For those recovering from health needs changed.”

JOY IN A BASKET

Goodness Gracious Picnic Basket Catering is a Big Hit Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Kelli White

When Tobi Mares moved to Carmel, she was impressed by all the community had to offer - especially outdoor events like concerts in the park. A season ticket holder to Conner Prairie’s Symphony on the Prairie, she began putting together picnic baskets to take to the popular event. Fellow concertgoers soon noticed her baskets and asked if they could purchase one.

When people learn of her picnic basket business, reactions tend to be positive. “They’re in love with the picnic and the whole idea behind it,” Mares says. “That motivates me even more.”

Mares has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, and began doing “Families were getting off of work and apprenticeship work in local eateries to grabbing something quick at Kroger to learn the ropes. Last spring she was set to take to these outdoor events,” says Mares, sign a lease for her own place when the who was eventually inspired to launch coronavirus led to government-mandated Goodness Gracious, a picnic basket shutdowns. Though the restaurant dream catering business. was temporarily on hold, she continued Mares delights in crafting dishes like lemon making picnic baskets all summer for folks who were eager to have picnics in their dill tuna salad sandwiches, teriyaki tofu front yards while socially distancing club sandwiches, Italiano skewers, Greek with neighbors. salads and more. Every sandwich comes with fruit, a side, and a fun, fancy fortune cookie with an inspirational message. Side With fall approaching, Mares has launched a new line of homemade soups, which she choices include sweet potato chips, white delivers to customers’ doors in glass jars bean hummus, German potato salad and so they can simply heat and eat. Options more. include Hungarian mushroom, a ketofriendly sweet potato puree, chicken and Mares, who can easily spend six hours pasta, a dense beef bourguignon, and her a day in her own kitchen creating food, grandpa’s recipe for cream of onion. maintains that simple is better when it comes to cooking. In addition, Mares has a wellness basket that includes a homemade, high-nutrient “I’m not into foo-foo cooking and while I bone broth, which can be enhanced with appreciate culinary cuisine, honestly one noodles, chicken or vegetables. This basket of my favorite meals is a fried bologna sandwich,” Mares says. “But I do add Cajun also includes coffee cups, antioxidant green tea, vitamins and more. seasoning.” 6 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atFishers.com

“I took the concept of mind, body and spirit, and put it in a basket,” says Mares, who credits her husband Brad for providing the love and support she needs to always forge ahead. “Honestly, 2020 would have been disastrous were it not for Brad, my biggest cheerleader.” During the pandemic, Mares has used her spare time to pen a book called “Goodness Gracious,” which is a memoir about food, struggle and perseverance. She hopes the launch of her book will coincide with the opening of her restaurant, as she’s considering opening her own eatery after all - at 146th Street and Hazel Dell Parkway. It would offer breakfast, brunch, lunch and baskets. For Mares, Goodness Gracious is about keeping her grandmother’s spirit alive with picnics and comfort food, by way of old family recipes. “The whole concept of Goodness Gracious is really about keeping the quilt of America alive through the sharing of food,” Mares says. believed in their mission and offered to volunteer time to edit segments.

Last fall Kelly Young realized that she missed writing, so she decided to start a blog called “Badassery Life”, all about connecting with ordinary women doing extraordinary things.

“This is a personal passion project for all involved,” Young says. “None of us are getting paid.”

thing with my badass friend?” says Young, president of Baise Communications.

They launched the podcast in January of 2020 and began sharing stories of resilience, strength, bravery and transformation. One story chronicled a domestic violence survivor whose estranged husband came to her house “I didn’t care if anybody read it,” Young and asked, “Are you ready to die today?” says. “It was more for me because I get He proceeded to brutally murder their so inspired, motivated and moved by toddler, then came after her. empowering women. If we can change one life or impact one person by a story we’ve told, that’s the purpose.” The initial idea for the concept came after Young wrote her first blog highlighting a friend’s accomplishment of running three half-marathons in three days, in three national parks. Her friend confided that being an accomplished runner is not what she felt made her a badass - that came from the fact that she had overcome sexual abuse as a child. “If you want to share that story, I think that makes me more of a badass,” the friend said. Young and Stoesz Kersh believe that every woman has a story, and they are happy to provide a platform in which females can share those stories. They keep the podcasts between 30 and 35 minutes in length so that commuters can listen on their drive to or from work. The podcasts are aired every two weeks on Monday mornings.

In one of the podcasts, a woman chronicles leaving her job and volunteering her way around the world for an entire year. In another, a mother talks about her son, who had been a victim of gun violence. Shot in the head at the age of 16, his skull was shattered, taking away his ability to walk or talk again. Young maintains that the greatest thing about the interviews is the way listeners connect with the females in purposeful, relatable, meaningful ways. Young and Stoesz Kersh’s hope is that they are not only empowering the women they are interviewing, but also empowering those experiencing the podcasts. October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and these friends are proud to celebrate such an accomplishment. “Women play so many different roles,” Young says. “We are entrepreneurs, coaches, moms, taxi drivers and advocates. Each role is equally important, but to be a womanowned business is a challenge that should be celebrated and recognized.” Born in Savannah, Georgia, Stoesz Kersh was raised by her grandparents in Linton, Indiana, after her military father died in a helicopter crash one month before she was born. Young, a mother of two, is glad her podcast serves to inspire her daughter. “She’s even opened my eyes to some girls and women we should feature,” Young says. The pair feel the podcast may be especially healing right now, when people might be suffering after months of social isolation. “People are feeling alone,” Stoesz Kersh says. “Hearing these stories enables women to identify with others on some level.” Young adds that feel-good stories are perhaps what many people might need at the moment. “We want to find the positive beauty in the world,” she says. rand Champion Janel Keesling knows what it’s like to walk into a car dealership as a woman and feel pressured and overwhelmed. “We’d like to think the world treats women equally, but there are presumed biases,” says Keesling, who, along with her husband Cole, owns CarSnoop, an innovative way to buy, lease or trade-in a vehicle from your phone, or computer. The beauty of CarSnoop is that dealerships don’t have any idea of the customer’s gender or race—only the city in which they reside. Hence, the buying experience is simplified. “In light of the pandemic, we’ve all changed the way we buy everything,” says Keesling, noting that consumers would rather browse for cars while relaxing on their back porch than wander countless dealerships. “We do all the legwork and even have a full concierge service to find the car you desire,” says Keesling. “Want a blue 2020 Honda Accord with XYZ features? We’ll find the best offers from dealerships.” CarSnoop enables the buyer to do all the paperwork from home and then they deliver the car directly to your home. “You literally don’t have to go anywhere,” says Keesling. “It’s a stress-free experience all the way around.”

TIPS FOR HOSTING THE PERFECT

PARTY

Writer / Abigail Hake

pooky days are on their way, and many of us are in need of any reason to decorate or party lately. While the times continue to be a little hairy, there’s still room to have fun, especially during the Halloween season. Here are a few tips on how to throw a spook-tacular Halloween party for you and your friends.

have to be fancy, but it can be. The biggest factors to consider are restrooms and overall space. This year especially, make sure that whatever venue you choose has enough room for your guests to spread out a little. If the party won’t be at your own home, check to make sure the venue owners allow decorations, because that’s up next…

INVITATIONS

DECORATIONS

This might be the year to indulge in creative invites. With fewer social opportunities to see friends and family in person, an actual mailed invite to your guests would be appreciated. Depending on the guest list, create your own or order pre-made invitations and add your own little touch. Throw in something spooky like a slimy crawler or tiny spiders so that when your guests open it, they’ll really be wowed!

LOCATION

Will the gathering be outside or inside? At your house or another location? It doesn’t

First, you might want to decide whether your party will be full-on scary, or just a little spooky yet family friendly. Regardless, a party is always more fun when the location is decorated so don’t skimp. You can keep it simple with spiderwebs, pumpkins and bats, or go a little crazier by adding mischievous skeletons to every room. Maybe include a skeleton that guests can pose with for a photo. Add some haunted decorations outside to welcome your guests in. Don’t be afraid to do something unconventional. If there is ever a time to try something crazy, it’s during Halloween. OCTOBER 2020

COSTUMES

Encourage your guests to dress up, and make sure this is included on the invite so there’s no confusion. Maybe even note that there will be a costume contest, with a few different categories and a prize. You can even make your own trophy to give out at the end of the night. Once people know there is a prize involved, they’ll really up their costume game.

GAMES AND ACTIVITIES

Make sure there’s something available to entertain your guests as well. If you are partying outside, indulge in yard games like spooky cornhole with ghosts added to the boards. Pumpkin ring toss is a great game that’s super easy too. Use glow necklaces or bracelets as rings to play after dark. Consider a craft station where kids can make their own trick-or-treat bags to take home.

FOOD

This is where it can get really fun. Try a hand

ice cube floating in your punch bowl, witches’ fingers or band-aid biscuits, to name just a few. Research websites like Pinterest, and you’ll find loads of horrific and blood-curdling treat ideas.

MUSIC

This is key for any party. Curate your own playlist to ensure continued spooky sounds for the entire night. Make sure you include classics like “Monster Mash” and “Thriller” on there. Once you’ve completed it, make sure to put it on repeat so you don’t run out of mood music throughout the evening. Your guests will love the theme music and it will keep everyone feeling good. With these tips, you should be well on your way to throwing a memorable party that will be the talk of October. Remember, this is a time to be silly and creative, so don’t hold back. As always, stay safe and have fun!

A FRESH START BLUEPEPPERMINT BOUTIQUE FINDS THE PERFECT FIT AT NEW FISHERS DISTRICT LOCATION Writer / Julie Yates . Photographer / Amy Payne

Owner Jessica Landez

“I WANT TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE FEEL COMFORTABLE WHEN THEY COME IN TO BLUEPEPPERMINT.”

The new setting for BluePeppermint Boutique is what Owner Jessica Landez always envisioned for her business. Now located at The Yard at Fishers District, the on-trend women’s clothing shop is nestled amidst a variety of shops and eateries. Landez’s relocation comes after several years of experience offering the community both a brick-and-mortar store and online shopping. “As a kid, I loved to shop with my mom,” Landez says. “It was a special time for us. I used to dream about getting locked inside a mall and having to live there. I was also fascinated with cash registers. I loved the OCTOBER 2020

whole experience, from finding something to buy that I really liked, to the connection with people in general.” After a series of jobs unrelated to retail, Landez eventually took the necessary steps to educate herself on running a retail business. “I taught for a year, got my real estate license, married and had a family,” Landez says. “I would think, ‘What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail?’ The answer was always, ‘Own a boutique.’ But I had no experience in retail and no idea where to begin. Then I got a start by renting a bit of square footage in another Fishers boutique, MJ Layne.”

Her time renting space inside an established store gave her the confidence to lease a house near Commercial Drive and 116th Street. After being there for five years, she was ready for the move to Fishers District. “We appeal to a wide age range,” Landez says. “An 18-year-old daughter shopping with her 40-year-old mom, or a 25-year-old daughter shopping with her 60-year-old mother, will all find something they love. I do the buying and I’m always looking for the best quality at the most affordable price. When we first started out in the little green house, I sensed that people didn’t feel confident they should be in there. I want to make sure people feel comfortable when they come in to BluePeppermint.” BluePeppermint’s online store is always open, and offers free shipping and free returns. New merchandise arrives daily, and

sales and giveaways change often. Items and special promotions can be seen on the boutique’s social media platforms, which are constantly updated. “Our new location is such a fun place,” Landez says. “The focal point of the store is a mural painted by local artist Laura Dro. The whole development is the perfect location to go with a girlfriend. There are so many things to do right there such as get breakfast, work out, get a massage or go to the hair salon. We were on board ever since we heard about The Yard at Fishers District. It’s perfect for our customers, and what I always hoped for.” BluePeppermint Boutique is located at 9705 Fishers District Drive in Fishers. THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN RIDES AGAIN AT CONNER PRAIRIE FALL FESTIVAL It takes a lot more than a pandemic to keep the Headless Horseman down. He rides again this year at Conner Prairie in Fishers, just in time to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This Halloween season, however, the Headless Horseman will have to follow the social distancing guidelines in place at Conner Prairie’s annual fall festival. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Conner Prairie has made several changes to Headless Horseman operations in order to ensure public safety while still delivering a fun family event,” says Christine DeJoy, director of public affairs at Conner Prairie. “These changes have been made in accordance with CDC guidelines, and have been approved by the Fishers Department of Health.” The Conner Prairie staff has multiple activities planned. “Guests will receive a complimentary bag of a ball and a ring necessary to play games,” DeJoy says. “Bounce houses, the corn sandbox, karaoke, and other games and activities not conducive to social distancing have been replaced with more suitable activities.” The Apple Store at Conner Prairie is currently closed, but apple cider slushies will be available in select food tents. “Access to the corn maze and haunted corn maze will be limited to groups of 10 every three minutes, to ensure adequate spacing,” DeJoy says. “The crowds will only be a maximum of 2,000 people per night.” Guests, staff members, volunteers and vendors are required to wear masks except when consuming food or drinks. All shows at the festival will be performed on open-air stages or in open-sided pavilions. OCTOBER 2020

“Guests do not have to submit to a temperature check, but are asked to stay home if they are sick or part of a vulnerable population,” DeJoy says. “Staff, volunteers and vendors are required to pass a daily temperature check and health questionnaire.” Guests are required to purchase tickets for specific event dates. Tickets are only available online in advance of desired event dates. “There’s always a lot of excitement for our Headless Horseman festival,” DeJoy says. “This year we had to make revisions to festival staples, but we think the outcome will leave our guests happily satisfied with some of our changes.” DeJoy says this year marks the 37th Headless Horseman fall festival. Festival activities will run throughout the month of October. Many families enjoy the haunted hayride, during which they are chased down by the Headless Horseman. Attendees can also check out a Legend of Sleepy Hollow theatrical show, a monster museum and much more. The midway will feature games including Ghost Pitch, Cauldron Toss, Pirate Ring Toss, Plinko, Monster Long Jump and Soccer Putt-Putt. Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Road in Fishers. Fore more info, call 317-776-6000. For festival event dates, ticket info, an activities list and more, visit connerprairie.org.

Founder Rebecca Colone

Writer / Julie Yates . Photography Provided by Amy Payne & Michele’s Mission of Love OCTOBER 2020

ichele’s Mission of Love began as a way for Founder Rebecca Colone to honor the memory of her mother while aiding her own healing journey. The organization, which became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in March of 2020, gained national attention after being featured on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” One of its programs, which provides mats made out of recycled plastic bags for the homeless, caught the attention of the show’s producer. “Kelly’s producer contacted me last February,” Colone says. “They wanted me to be a guest on the show and talk about the mat mission. I was on a flight to L.A. that Friday.” The organization has 50 active volunteers, and more than 1,700 members comprise its Facebook group. While activities have slowed down due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organization continues to help those in need. It occupies a special niche in comforting cancer patients. “My mom’s name was Michele and she passed away in 2014,” Colone says. “She taught me that relationships, as well as providing acts of kindness, are more important than anything. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. I had a double mastectomy and it took me five months to heal. I thought about what my mom had taught me, and I started making bags to give to cancer patients. It made me feel better.” After receiving a heart-shaped pillow during her mastectomy recovery, Colone began sewing and donating them. After that, when a woman from her church told her about making mats out of plastic bags, she began producing mats and arranged distribution through two organizations - So Others Can Survive, and God’s Open Arms Ministry. “Even though I had never crocheted before, I figured out how,” Colone says. “First the bags have to be cut into strips and made into plarn, or plastic yarn. It takes about eight hours and 500 to 700 bags to make one mat. I posted on Facebook asking for used bags and it really blew up. We have three bag collection sites - Fishers, Noblesville and Avon. We are currently looking for a business that would donate some unused office space or a storage unit.” Each month the organization focuses on a special project, and often projects become an OCTOBER 2020

ongoing part of the charity. One such project is luggage donation, as a considerable number of children that enter foster care transport their possessions in garbage bags. There are several ways to assist Michele’s Mission of Love. The group’s Facebook page has a link for purchasing wish-list items. Since the organization is registered as a nonprofit, monetary gifts are tax deductible. “What’s amazing is that it helps those who help,” Colone says of her organization. “One volunteer has made over 50 mats since February. She was dealing with depression. This has given her a purpose. We hope to make someone smile. We want them to know we are thinking of them and they are never alone.” Visit facebook.com/groups/MMof L for more information. Monetary gifts can be sent to Michele’s Mission of Love, c/o Rebecca Colone, P.O. Box 211, McCordsville, IN, 46055.

On a Saturday afternoon in 1965, three men and their families decided to play a game of badminton. Unable to find a shuttlecock, they improvised. They lowered the net, poked holes in a plastic ball and crafted paddles out of spare plywood. Pickleball was born.

“As soon as I played it for the first time I was hooked,” he says. “I grew up playing After 55 years, this combination of ping-pong. Me and my brother are super badminton, table tennis and traditional competitive. It reminded me of shrinking tennis is one of the fastest-growing sports in yourself down to a ping-pong table. Marcus Woodhouse, president and cofounder of Indy Pickleball Club (IPC) says he fell in love with the game about five years ago.

It was at these tournaments where Woodhouse says he was inspired to create IPC. “I travel for pickleball tournaments all over,” OCTOBER 2020

he says. “All the tournaments are held by the clubs in all the bigger cities. I noticed the need in our city to get one voice in one place. It seems like more of the small towns are getting pickleball courts and the bigger cities haven’t caught up to the smaller cities. I wanted to get tournaments here. I wanted to do something for the city - to do something for kids and grow the sport in the Indianapolis area.” IPC officially launched in August of 2019, and the club’s stated mission is “to grow the sport of pickleball in central Indiana

by developing and promoting recreation, league and tournament opportunities for players of all ages and ability.” In its brief existence, IPC membership has grown to more than 100 pickleball players. Woodhouse says he expects that number to continue to grow. “Our ultimate goal, obviously, would be to have well over 1,000-plus members,” he says. The number of people who play pickleball increased 650% between 2013 and 2019 according to the USA Pickleball Association. 2020 has seen the postponement or cancellation of pickleball tournaments all over the country, but Woodhouse says he believes the coronavirus pandemic is bringing more people to the sport. “I think COVID has really helped bring families to the game,” he says. “Once they

opened up the courts I saw a bunch of families learning to play at the parks and doing that as a family.”

also procures courts for beginner classes where newcomers can learn the game. The proceeds from these events are put back into the club to fund its long-term goals.

Woodhouse attributes pickleball’s increasing popularity to the game’s accessibility. The club is working towards becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. “Everyone can play it,” he says. “You can be 90 years old or eight years old and play. Day Ray Brewing, IPC provides pickleball players the opportunity to compete “Our ultimate goal is to host a national against players at similar skill levels. It championship,” he says. OCTOBER 2020

In addition to the IPCC, Woodhouse says he wants IPC to help build pickleball courts throughout central Indiana. “We’re just trying to find places for that to be organized, and to just keep growing the sport so that we can introduce more and more people to it,” he says. “One of my ultimate goals is to be able to have pickleball in every school. Having facilities where schools can bring their kids would be one of my absolute dreams. Hopefully one day we’ll see it as a competitive sport in high schools.” IPC’s next event is the “IPC BEST. SPORT. EVER.” tournament, scheduled to take place October 2 through October 4. There will be a youth scramble on Friday, men’s and women’s doubles on Saturday, and mixed doubles on Sunday. Woodhouse says IPC is currently working to secure indoor locations for three pickleball tournaments this winter. FISHERS WOMEN-OWNED SALON FLOURISHING FOUR YEARS LATER Radiate 60 Hair Collective isn’t your typical hair salon. The salon was founded in 2016 by two friends and longtime stylists Carly Rush and Krystal Brown. Rush and Brown became friends while working to launch Antioch Indianapolis, a church that now meets at its location in Castleton. Through their church community, the two quickly became friends and discovered they shared the same passion for hair and people. After Rush’s previous salon, MakeFresh on Maple, had to relocate due to the city’s demolitions and new construction

surrounding the Nickel Plate District, Rush brought up the idea to Brown about the two opening a new salon in Fishers. The idea quickly became reality. The result is Radiate 60 Hair Collective, located inside The Edge Building in Fishers, around the corner from The Well Coffeehouse. Today, the salon’s nearly 3,000 square-feet space is flourishing with 19 stylists, making it one of the bigger salons in Fishers. “Our space was custom created, by my husband, Chris, with a purpose,” Rush

says. “We wanted an open concept not to critique the stylists but to inspire and encourage each other daily. The concept of booth rent salons is not new, but we took our own approach by changing how we operate day-to-day and interact, personally, with our stylists.” The name of the salon itself also has a special meaning. Radiate 60 comes from the Bible verse Isaiah 60:5 and highlights Brown and Rush’s overall mission for their space to be a place of light and encouragement to their clients and stylists. “Our personal life is devoted to having a relationship with Jesus and wanting to love and serve others well, like he did,” Brown says. “We didn’t want to separate that mission from our work. We wanted to create a place where people feel welcomed, encouraged and served by us.”

36 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / atFishers.com

Being a booth rent salon, Radiate 60 also supports its 19 stylists who are all experts in custom color, creative cutting, extensions and much more. Not being commissioned allows each stylist more freedom creatively as well as setting their own schedules and rates for each appointment. “We get to not only run our own business, but we get to support, encourage and watch these other female-owned businesses grow within our space,” Rush says. “All of our stylists, female and male, are so enjoyable to work beside. and we are honored to have each of them on our team.” With October being National Women’s Small Business Month, both Rush and Brown are thankful and proud to be a women-owned business located in the heart of Fishers. “A rewarding part of being a female business owner is the ability to create balance between being a mother and having a career,” Brown says. “Carly and I both have three children and, yes, sacrifices have been made in certain seasons, but we learned to dig our heels into our calling of both roles and have found success in our home life and work life. We are thankful to live in a time where women are empowered to make moves towards their goals and celebrated for their success.” Radiate 60 Hair Collective is located at 8890 E 116th St SUITE 150 in Fishers, around the corner from The Well. HEALTHIES OPENS FISHERS LOCATION Healthies, a smoothie and juice bar, has opened a new location in Fishers.

Dewald, 26, says he initially struggled to stay consistent with any type of healthy routine, but that changed when his sister introduced him to meal-replacement shakes like the ones offered at Healthies.

The opening is the culmination of Healthies Owner Garrett Dewald’s personal journey toward improved health, and his desire to help others.

“With exercise and diet, sticking to it is the part that matters,” Dewald says. “I think that just having something that tasted good helped me and my sister a lot.”

Dewald, who says he used to drink a twoliter bottle of Mountain Dew every day, decided to start improving his health when he was about 20 years old.

Healthies opened in June of 2019 and Dewald says the decision to expand to Fishers was easy.

“That’s when I started getting real serious with my health,” he says. “I started getting more into eating the right things, supplements and working out.”

“We knew that the Fishers area was fairly health conscious,” he says. “Lots of parks, lots of sidewalks - it’s just obvious that the city invests in making things easier for the citizens to be healthy. We thought that would be a good fit for us. We love the

neighborhoods. We love the community.” The community, according to Dewald, loves Healthies back. He credits the positive community response to superior customer service. “Product aside, regardless of what we sell, we have a mission and we want to provide an excellent, above-and-beyond customer experience that is unique.” Dewald says the positive response from Fishers residents is also due to the Healthies menu, which includes tasty and effective products that will fill customers up without expanding their waistline. “People are just really excited that they can tell from drinking our drinks that they’re getting results,” he says. “We have some

“We do meal-replacement shakes,” he says. “No one else really does it except for us - meal-replacement shakes that have all the vitamins, fiber, protein and things that make you feel full.” The beverages on the menu all contain 300 calories or fewer, with 24 grams of protein and low levels of fat and sugar. Healthies also offers Energy Bombs, which Dewald says are sugarfree, healthy energy drinks that boost metabolism, concentration and focus without the crashes or jittery feelings that can result from many other energy drinks.
