“OUR WORLD WAS TURNED TOPSY-TURVY, AND STUDENTS HAVE TO REENGAGE BACK INTO SCHOOL. YMI WILL BE CRITICAL IN SUPPLYING MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS. — BRITTANY RAYBURN
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Amy Payne
Local resident Brittany Rayburn is the new executive director of Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI). Since 2008, the organization has partnered with the Hamilton Southeastern School Corporation to provide a mentoring program that benefits intermediate through high school students. Although this is a new position to Rayburn, she has a 10-year history of serving the area.

anasa Nagraj never expected her love of do-it-yourself projects to lead to a full-time business.
“I’ve been doing DIY stuff for a long time,” Nagraj says. “My friends all said I should teach other people how to do projects, but I didn’t necessarily know how to operate a business.” Nagraj obtained a license with Hammer and Stain Inc. to open Hammer and Stain Central Indiana in Fishers, in December of 2019. Nagraj is a Fishers resident and felt Hammer and Stain is precisely the kind of entertainment missing in the area. “I live in Fishers, and I wanted to open my business in Fishers,” Nagraj says. “I felt it was significant for the residents in the area to have different varieties of ways to create.” Clients book private parties to create one specific item, chosen from a project list. Each person then customizes their piece of decor. “We offer projects creating personalized wood planks, pillows, doormats, pallet signs, farmhouse trays, home shutters, noodle boards, oversized porch planks, centerpiece boxes, beer and wine chillers, and so many other things,” Nagraj says.

materials, tools and step-by-step instruction,” Nagraj says. “A lot of people think they need to have artistic ability to do this, but anyone can do it, no matter their level of expertise.” Most adult projects range in price from $35 to $85. “Most parties range from an hour and a half to three hours,” Nagraj says. “It just depends on the group and the project they choose.” Hammer and Stain Central Indiana also offers public workshops for those who don’t want to host a private party. “We offer many workshops each month,” Nagraj says. “Each one is a different theme or a different project. It’s great for people who don’t want to host a whole party.” Nagraj had to close the studio during the shutdown of 2020. She had to learn how to keep her business running while not having bodies in the studio. “I came up with the idea for the Hammer at Home take-home kits,” Nagraj says. “Customers can order everything online and then do curbside pickup. Each kit is completely customizable. That includes an unfinished wood plank, paint colors and stain colors. We include all the items and instructions they need to complete the project at home. Now that the studio is open again, we do still offer the kits for those who feel more comfortable not being in the studio.” It’s vital for Nagraj to give back to the community by hosting fundraisers. “We host these fundraising events as a way to help the Fishers community,” Nagraj says. “I live here, so it’s important to me to offer them. Hammer and Stain Central Indiana will donate proceeds directly to the organization at the end of the event. We give $10 for every project and 15% of all retail sales during the event.” Hammer and Stain Central Indiana is located at 11508 Lantern Road in Fishers. Adrienne Evans, Director of Marketing + Client Experience
Alex Rice, Project Interior Designer
Many working women struggle to find a work-life balance. In 2016 Briana Dunkin founded Parallel Design Group (PDG) to achieve a symbiosis between her family and her career. “When Briana was pregnant with her first daughter, she felt she had to choose between having a family and having a career,” says Adrienne Evans, director of marketing and client experience. “For the time being at her last place of employment, she pumped the brakes and focused inward towards her family. After her second daughter was born, she had the opportunity to work with a previous client on a one-off project. That continued to lead to more projects and more clients. She built Parallel Design Group after working on those projects.” Dunkin’s focus was creating a family-centric business.

“She built the business with the intent of putting family first,” Evans says. “In her previous role, she felt she had to choose between having a family or a business. She wanted to create this opportunity for herself, but for other women too. Currently we have a staff of 10, and the majority of our 14 / OCTOBER 2021
employees are female. I think what attracts them to PDG is serving with integrity and the culture that has been created.” The PDG staff creates beautiful interior designs for businesses and residential properties. “We were primarily doing commercial spaces up until COVID,” Evans says. “Then several of our previous commercial clients contacted us needing help with creating solutions for their home. They had the whole family including their kids working from home.” PDG’s local projects include Sangiovese Ristorante, Sangrita Grill + Cantina, Flexware Innovation, Hub & Spoke, INCOG BioPharma Services, Engel and Völkers, and more. “The Sangrita at Fishers District is a second location, and one of the owners, Tarek Mercho, knew the clientele would be different from the Broad Ripple location,” Evans says. “We wanted to put a spin on the first restaurant. We wanted to bring the authenticity of the Spanish and Mexican flavors and vibes, while also elevating it for a more elegant feel.” Sangiovese is the second location for Owner

Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn co-host the new “Paranormal X Road” show
EXPLORING THE UNEXPLAINED NEW SHOW TACKLES LOCAL STORIES OF THE PARANORMAL
18 / OCTOBER 2021
Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided
Losing a loved one is an unfortunate part of life. Some people claim to feel their loved ones communicating with them even after they’ve died. A new, all-female show called “Paranormal X Road” aims to help bring peace to alleged paranormal experiences. Kitsie Duncan and KJ McGlinn co-host “Paranormal X Road.” Duncan is an author, writer, producer, director and paranormal researcher. McGlinn is a local radio personality who uses her voice to help the local community. Tiffany Rice, a spirit medium, rounds out the cast. “In the first episode, I had some things happening in my home,” McGlinn says. “I was pretty sure it was my grandmother coming through. I don’t want to give too much away, but it ended up being way more than just my grandmother communicating with me.” Being an all-female show was essential to both women. OCTOBER 2021 / 19

me, and that was important for this show.” The duo funded the show through a Kickstarter campaign, meeting their goal in just three days. “The beauty about Kickstarter is the person who gave $5 has the same effect as the person who donated $500,” McGlinn says. “It’s all or nothing, which is terrifying. If you don’t hit your goal, you get nothing.” Duncan’s vision for the show is to help as many people as she can and provide a sense of comfort. “I got into this because I was missing my dad,” Duncan says. “Bringing these people peace has been magical. I want to help people all over the world.” Duncan and McGlinn are hopeful for a second season, to bring even more paranormal stories. “Right now we’re just enjoying the show airing,” Duncan says. “We’re really hopeful we can create a second season with an even bigger budget so we can help even more people.” “First and foremost - girl power,” Duncan says. “I believe females, in general, are a little more empathetic. I feel like the female energy helps the spirits communicate. Paranormal shows are all over television. I feel like it’s time for an all-female team. We’ve gone into homes of people we don’t know and received messages that we don’t necessarily understand, but it makes complete sense to the homeowner. That’s been pretty cool. We understand how
meaningful it is to them.” McGlinn, an Indianapolis resident, felt compelled to put the normal in the paranormal, as she says. “When I moved to Indy, it was really a lastditch effort,” McGlinn says. “To be here 20plus years later in a community that I love, seeing them embrace this new show, is just amazing. I feel like the community trusts in 20 / OCTOBER 2021
While Season 1 is almost done filming, KJ & Kitsie continue to be available to assist homeowners experiencing the paranormal or just hoping to make a connection with a loved one who’s passed. A contact form is available through their website. The show airs locally on WNDY-TV 23 on Saturdays at midnight, and on YouTube. For more information, visit paranormalcrossroad.com.

When the time came for Amy Harris to look for an assisted living facility for her deaf clients in the Fishers area, she had important specifications that needed to be met. As a child of deaf adults, she grew up within the deaf community. When her parents got older, she joined the health care world in order to understand the processes involved with admissions, rehabilitation, long-term care and assisted living. She realized that working with deaf seniors was her passion and became employed by Archibald Memorial Home, an organization whose mission is to assist deaf and hard of hearing seniors. “The things that are key for Archibald are

ishers resident Mackenzie Baker-Robinson felt a calling to make a change in her career in 2020. Baker-Robinson was a teacher but wanted a more flexible job that allowed her to express her creativity.
Baker-Robinson’s parents own 80 acres of land just north of 106th Street and Allisonville Road.
“I quit teaching last fall and ended up working at a local florist shop,” Baker-Robinson says. “Working in the shop was really fun, and it got me thinking about the whole idea of starting a local flower farm.”
“We started playing around with the idea of opening a flower farm,” Baker-Robinson says. “Fishers doesn’t have one, which is crazy to me because Fishers has grown so much. I thought it would be awesome for our community to have. My parents said I could use a portion of their land to start Fishers Flower Farm. Back in January we started with thousands of seeds in a sunroom, which we use as a greenhouse. That’s where the process starts. Once they get big enough and the weather is warm enough, we can plant them out on the farm. It takes about 50 to 60 days to bloom flowers.”
While working at the florist, Baker-Robinson noticed the flowers were coming from Ecuador, and were often filled with chemicals to keep them alive longer. “I used to work at a shop called Global Gifts,” BakerRobinson says. “Fair trade is everything made sustainably and handmade, so you know exactly who is making it. There is no slave labor. Global Gifts is a nonprofit, and all the proceeds go directly to the artisans. I already had that mindset of being mindful about where the things you buy originate. I really loved the creative part of working as a florist and making the customers happy, but I was noticing
The flowers don’t have to be local to grow on the farm. “For example, if you take a basic flower like a zinnia, you could grow those for much longer if we had a climate OCTOBER 2021 / 33

that was lovely year-round like California,” Baker-Robinson says. “For us here in Indiana, we just grow them in the heat of summer.” Fishers Flower Farm participates in the Fishers Farmers Market each Saturday. “The farmers market has been really awesome,” Baker-Robinson says. “I was excited they chose us to participate in the first place because I didn’t know if they already had enough flower vendors. Obviously it’s our first year in business too, but it has become one of my favorite things. We work until midnight Friday, because we have to cut the flowers when it’s cool enough out. It’s kind of last-minute to make sure they’re as fresh as possible. Then we arrange them and then let them condition in the fridge overnight. Then they’re taken to the market on Saturday.” Baker-Robinson co-owns the farm with her 34 / OCTOBER 2021
mother, Kayti. “My mom and I are very close,” BakerRobinson says. “Before we started working together, we saw each other every day. Obviously now we do too. We’re often on the same wavelength. We’re both very creative, go-with-the-flow and spontaneous. She’s really good at arranging the flowers, and I’m really good at researching. She has a day job so this is a lot for her, but it’s been awesome to work together.” Fishers Flower Farm offers a monthly flower subscription in addition to bouquets for those who love fresh blooms. “You can subscribe for a month of your choosing, and each week of that month you get fresh flowers delivered to your doorstep,” Baker-Robinson says. “We cut them either the morning of, or the night before, so they’re super fresh. Then we arrange them and deliver them to your door. It’s all

It’s fun because you never know what you’re going to get.” Baker-Robinson looks at her first year as a learning year for the business, and has big plans for the future. “In the future I would love to get my own land separate from their home,” BakerRobinson says of her parents’ property. “Obviously more land means more flowers. I would love to be able to host events on the property. I would love to have professional photographers use the flower farm to take photos of their clients too.” Fishers Flower Farm offers floral arrangements, bouquet bar workshops, wreath workshops, wreath and flower delivery, and more. Dr. Harper, Dr. Kaytlynn Toering & team
FAMILY CARE CHIROPRACTIC Writer / Renee Larr Photographyer / Sam Zachrich
Dr. Kim Harper has always been interested in health care even as a young child, especially pediatrics. In high school, she suffered a sports injury and went to see a chiropractor for relief. That trip opened her eyes to natural health care and a career in chiropractic. “The doctor started talking to me about chiropractic care and natural health care,” Harper says. “I had always been interested in health care, especially with children. I had thought about becoming a pediatrician, but after talking with him, I thought chiropractic care sounded like a great avenue to work with kids, just in a different way. I immediately made that my career path as a freshman.” Harper did her pre-med education at the University of Iowa and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1993. She opened Family Care Chiropractic in Fishers in 1995. “I have patients that range in age from one day old to 99 years old,” Harper says. “The birth process is so strenuous for mothers and babies. Many times the mother will bring the baby in right after birth to have their spine and nervous systems checked. We work with people of all ages utilizing chiropractic care which removes interference to the nervous system. By helping the nervous system work as well as it possibly can, it allows the rest of the body to function properly.” In addition to chiropractic care, Harper focuses on total body health. “We do lifestyle coaching where we’re
teaching people about exercise, nutrition, stress reduction and better ways to sleep,” Harper says. “We encourage families to make healthy choices for themselves. We offer some physical therapy modalities, muscle rehab, and massage therapy to go along with chiropractic care. ” The practice employs an all-female staff whose camaraderie keeps their working relationship successful. They will also be welcoming a new doctor to the practice, Dr Kaytlynn Toering will be joining the team at the beginning of October. “We are a very close team,” Harper says. “We do things together outside the office as well. We support each other, which I believe is important in a female-owned business. I know I could call any one of my staff on any given day, and if I had a problem, they would be there to help me and vice versa. It’s important to us to have that support system.” Being an entrepreneur, mom and wife is a juggling act for Harper. “When my kids were younger, there were some days I would have to bring them into the office with me,” Harper says. “It’s a bit easier now, but I still have to balance patient care with the business side of things.”

shop in the area, and it’s frequented by a community of weavers. Some drive from as far as Fort Wayne to purchase fibers and attend classes. Former owner Linda Adamson knows all the names of the regular customers. Lemons was once one of the weavers attending classes and learning from Adamson. Now, she is the teacher. Lemons bought Tabby Tree Weaver from Adamson in 2019 but continued to seek advice from Adamson as a temporary instructor. It made the transition much smoother for Lemons. Lemons loves being located in Fishers. “This is a great time to be in Fishers. It’s really dynamic and cutting-edge advancements are being brought in with a focus on the arts and technology,” Lemons says. “That’s the kind of community I really enjoy being involved in.” It’s also just a five-minute drive from home to the store. Not every part of the business is so quick, however. Sometimes it can take up to 10 hours to set up her largest looms—a task she does for some of her one-day classes. Tabby Tree Weaver offers classes for beginners to advanced weavers. Classes can last up to three all-day sessions, like the towel workshop that creates six towels per person. For Lemons, this is a dream profession. She grew up learning to crochet and playing with textiles. At one point, she imagined opening a yarn shop.
“It was just when I left my full-time job that I had time to really weave,” Lemons says. “I love textiles — it’s something that has always attracted me.” Lemons hopes to attract young weavers with new classes. She wants to create a bracelet class or bring more into a class where they make bands for camera straps, belts or dog collars. Lemons wants people to pop in and check
out the looms, just to look. Then, maybe they’ll return to learn how to make a rug, dog collar, camera strap, towel or more. Tabby Tree Weaver is located at 9832 N by NE Blvd in Fishers. It’s open Wednesday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. It’s closed Sunday – Tuesday. The price of classes varies but are usually around $100 - $250. FISHERS AGRIPARK BRINGS BACK FALL FESTIVAL
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Robby Berry
On Saturday, October 16, Fishers AgriPark will again host its Fall Festival. Unlike last year, preregistration is not required, and patrons can attend the event any time during the hours of 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Admission for the day full of activities is free. Information about the festival including a schedule and map will be available at a check-in tent. The park, which spans more than 30 acres, will have a pumpkin giveaway on one side and food trucks on the other. In between, attendees can enjoy inflatables, a corn maze, music and games. Around 1,000 people attended the 2020 festival, and at least that many are expected this year. 40 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
The purpose of the festival is to showcase the park’s goal of educating and inspiring people of all ages to learn about our agricultural roots, as well as current farming practices. Visitors can tour the wildflower garden and view native Indiana plants. Children can enjoy the nature play area that was developed in a partnership with Reynolds Farm Equipment, and play in the mud kitchen, which is a discovery area with little sinks and running water.

THE TOT SPOT INDEPENDENT CHILD-CARE CENTER PLANS SECOND LOCATION IN FISHERS Writer / Megan Arszman Photography Provided TownePost.com / OCTOBER 2021 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 43

amily knows your child best, and can provide the best care for your child. That’s how the team at The Tot Spot Early Education Academy in Fishers sees its mission. The Tot Spot was founded in 2007 when Alisha Ramsey couldn’t find the type of care she wanted for her daughter.
“Parents tell us that what sets The Tot Spot apart from other childcare facilities is the sense of family you feel when you walk in the door,” Ramsey says. “Our whole thing is that we’re a family and we love partnering with our families, to not only enrich the education of our children, but their hearts as well.”
“We started out as a home day care because I wanted to be with my daughter,” Ramsey says. “I pretty much made up my curriculum, and initially started with only the children of teachers.”
As a former seventh-grade math teacher, Ramsey saw firsthand how traditional learning drained the passion out of most children. This is why she started to incorporate as much fun as she could into learning, so her educational approach isn’t like a typical classroom setting.
Now, after receiving national accreditation and caring for many Fishers families, a second location is planned to be open in 2022 to care for and educate more children.
“Hence our tagline, ‘Where fun and education meet,’” she says.
44 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2021 / TownePost.com
The Tot Spot focuses on education through play, but it’s an individualized focus. For example, Ramsey says that while playing with blocks, teachers try to incorporate other skills such as math and science. Snack time can include a lesson on fractions, or addition and subtraction. Outside play time can see broken sticks turned into math lessons as well. “We do a lot of natural teaching within the environment, so by the time they’re in school they easily get the concept,” Ramsey says. “Because of that, our kids are more advanced by the time they head to school.” The passion for education is equaled by the passion Ramsey has for serving her community through her facility. “I love the fact that we make a difference in not only our children’s
lives, but in our parents’ lives,” Ramsey says. Open communication and flexibility allows parents to check in on their children throughout the day, thanks to technology. Phone applications allow for instant messages between teachers and parents, and the ability to live-stream the classroom gives them peace of mind. Newborns to 5-year-olds are welcome at the original Tot Spot location, while the new location will allow for after-school care for school-aged children up to age 12. To find out more information on The Tot Spot, schedule a visit at 11540 Fishers Drive in Fishers, call 317-849-3235, or visit ilovethetotspot.com.

Story & Photos Provided by Painting with a Twist
After the stress of a global pandemic, everyone could use a night out with friends, a loved one, or just a night away from the house, add a glass of wine, beer or soda, music, throw in paint and a canvas, and you have Painting with a Twist. Painting with a Twist, located in Carmel, is America’s original and largest paint n’ sip franchise brand. “We’re an instructor-led party with paint, canvas or wood board and a beverage,” says Kerry Sawyer, owner of the Carmel location. “We have studio painting classes that are open to the public that includes family classes, blacklight, trivia nights, ladies and date nights, as well as offering private parties, team-building events, virtual classes, take-home kits, and off-site events. Guests, after reserving online, come in, have a glass

perfect match for Ms. Sawyer.
“Our private parties are a great way to celebrate birthdays, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, anniversaries, company parties or team-building events,” Sawyer says. “They get to choose their painting from our art gallery of more than 11,000 paintings. Then our instructor guides them step-by-step through the entire process.”
“Once a month, my studio hosts a painting event that raises funds for local nonprofit organizations,” Sawyer says. “It’s a fun and creative way to give back and support the causes I love.”
Sawyer knows from experience that teambuilding events are a great way to improve company culture and engage with them outside of work. Prior to purchasing Painting with a Twist, Sawyer was one of the studio’s best clients. Sawyer owned 45 haircut locations and would host her Team Appreciation Events at the studio. She not only brought her team to the studio, but her children, family, cheer moms and friends. “Every Time I was at Painting with a Twist, it was always an amazing experience,” she says. “My guests and I always had a blast painting and socializing. We left happy and with a painting that we created.” After unforeseen life-changing events, Sawyer sold her haircut locations and wanted to pursue something that makes a difference in people’s lives, something she could make profitable but also make her soul happy. She found another surprising benefit of ownership, Painting with a Purpose.
Painting with a Twist has donated more than $5M to nonprofit organizations across the nation. Sawyer is committed to giving back to the local community, one painting at a time. “Painting builds self-esteem and is very therapeutic,” Sawyer adds. “Painting with a Twist produces a relaxing, open environment where painters feel safe to explore their own creativity. We truly are helping people. “Customers come into my studio, and they literally transform in the two hours they’re here. They come in unsure, not thinking they can create the artwork chosen and they leave ecstatic, relaxed and revived. We’re creating a carefree escape for people to reconnect, de-stress, rejuvenate and rekindle spirits, at the same time I’m allowing artists that I employ to pursue their passion.” They also offer Twist at Home kits. “With COVID, we wanted to continue
to extend that sense of peace to our community by offering them the opportunity to do that from home,” Sawyer says. ‘Our kits allow our customers to paint from the safety of their own home. Whether you choose to have a moment to yourself, plan a date night, or make it into a familyfun event, Twist at Home kits are a great way to shift into that imaginative mode where worries seem to fade. Inside your Twist at Home kit, you’ll have everything you need to create your very own masterpiece including an instructed video. Painting with a Twist also offers many different outlets for people to escape from the daily grind. “You can find all of our information online at paintingwithatwist.com/carmel,” Sawyer says. “It’s time to plan something fun, therapeutic and out of the ordinary. Sip, socialize and create. Come in and give your night a Twist.”
