He also participates in an Explorer unit through Chip Ganassi Racing in Indianapolis, learning how to work on race cars as part of his Scouting experience. “Meeting new friends makes it even more fun,” Valerio says. “I like camping. Progressing through the Scout ranks as a part of Troop 303 in Fishers, Valerio also enjoyed watching older Scouts in the troop earn Eagle and began to understand he could do it too if he worked hard enough. He received encouragement from Chris Wilson, an Eagle Scout who serves as a care provider and mentor for young adults with special needs, including A.J. “I don’t think he got his Eagle despite his disability, or because of it. He got this far because he’s a good Scout,” Wilson says. “He struggles with some things, but he’s not afraid to ask questions. He’s earned his Eagle faster than I did. He definitely worked hard.” For his Eagle project — a Scout-led community service effort requiring significant planning and execution — Valerio tore down a shed at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve that had been destroyed by weather and animals, then rebuilt it with a shelter and a bench that allows visitors to relax and enjoy nature. “The City of Fishers is proud of A.J. Valerio, who has earned the achievement of Eagle Scout rank,” says Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness. “His dedication to community and service was evident in the work he did at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve that will have a lasting impact for all who visit. We congratulate AJ, and we know his journey is just beginning.” Valerio is aware of the rarity of his accomplishment but downplays the impact of achieving Eagle with a disability. “I don’t think of myself as having special needs,” he says. “But a lot of Scouts never make it to Eagle. I’m proud I earned it.”

GREEN DISTRICT New Chopped Salads & Wraps Eatery Celebrates Grand Opening In Fishers
Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
Green District Salads, a Louisville-based chopped salad and wrap eatery, has come to town with edgy slogans and a cast of athletically fit characters with vegetable heads. Among its marketing logos are a tomato-topped sprinter and a prize fighter sporting a head of broccoli. They promise “The best GD salad in town” and suggest “Eat your GD salad.” For James and Nicole Plenty, owners of the Green District Salad location at 8350 East 96th Street, what’s most compelling is that the salads and wraps the restaurant serves up to the Fishers community are delicious and filling yet healthy. Before opening the restaurant, James, who has a doctorate in education, served as the Conducting Fellow and Education Specialist for the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Nicole is an Obstetrics/Gynecology MD specializing in Fetal Medicine. Together they had the idea of opening a business that would contribute to the Fishers community, so James began researching options. “We were interested in starting a business that would be fulfilling to both of us,” he says. “I looked at a lot of franchises and nothing made sense. Nicole wanted to do something with salads. I was researching online when I saw Green District Salads. I loved what I saw. “I visited both of the locations in Louisville. I tasted the food, talked with the owners and ended up loving the brand. The concept is healthy salads but any of our salads can be made into a wrap. Or people can customize anything and build their own.” Each of the 11 signature salads offered has a catchy name and fresh ingredients that include vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. The salads and wraps are priced at $9.99, but the build-your-own option starts at $6.99. One option is the “Romaine Calm” which includes chicken, Parmesan cheese, bacon, red onion and red pepper.
Another example is the combination of quinoa, beets, shredded carrots, grilled asparagus and chickpeas that are among the ingredients of the “You Are What You Beet.” “The response so far has been great,” Plenty says. “We are beginning to have repeat customers that come back one or two times a week to have their favorite salad. Our top sellers have been Tequila Mocking Bird made of shrimp, corn, feta cheese, black beans, peppers and onion and Thai One On which is chicken or shrimp, chow mein noodles, cabbage, carrots, edamame and peanuts.” Green District Salads also has a catering menu. Six of its most popular salads are available in bulk quantities. Prices range from $40 to $70 and feeds up to 12 people. Wrap trays start at $32 for four servings. Two varieties of pasta salad made to serve eight are available at a cost of $12. “We looked for a location in Fishers that was affordable and fit the footprint of the restaurant,” Plenty adds. “I came across the space where the Which Wich Sandwiches shop had moved from. It had easy access and was the perfect place. We are so glad to contribute a healthy option of a fast-casual eatery to the community.” Visit Green District Salads at 8350 East 96th Street in Fishers. You can give them a call at 317-288-7402 or visit them online at GDSalads.com for more information. NOVEMBER 2019

BETHLEHEM UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CELEBRATES 175TH BIRTHDAY Writer / Matt Keating Photography provided
Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Fishers recently celebrated its 175th birthday. The church was founded by pioneers in 1844. “It’s very exciting to be part of a house of worship that has lasted this long,” says Pat Johnston, administrative board chair. “Our congregation is the oldest continuing worship community in Hamilton County housed in a frame. The church was built in 1851 and added on to, and refreshed over the years, but it’s the oldest religious building still in use.” Johnston loves the church. “My husband Dave and I were drawn here from the church where we raised our kids,
a mega United Methodist congregation, where we were active for 40 years or so when we moved to the lake on retirement,” Johnston says. “We had passed the pretty little building and admired it while visiting our grandkids in the area and wondered what it was like inside. We were hooked on our first visit!” There are several things that stand out to Pat about the history of the church. “Well, we started in the Crook family’s log barn at 136th and Prairie Baptist Rd as a ‘class’ of the United Brethren church,” Johnston says. “Over several mergers between denominations, we (later) ultimately became a United Methodist Church. Our second building was a log church just a bit south of where we are now located, but that was quickly replaced in 1851 by the frame church with a NOVEMBER 2019
cemetery at the current location. In 1912, we expanded by moving the building forward several feet, digging a basement, and hauling the building onto its new foundation (using horses).” The church’s founding families (with the last names Crook, Patterson, Steffy, Cahil, Carverick, Wertz, Allen, Kinnaman, and Wyant) still have descendants in Hamilton County, and Wyant descendants still worship there. “Our historic cemetery (we recently had an open house, talk, and tour there) includes several Civil War vets, and even from right around the time of the Revolutionary War,” Johnston says. “It’s amazing to think that we are still using the walnut pews made from huge logs donated from a founding member’s farm. And to think, we were here long before an interstate, Avalon and
Saxony, and the Hamilton Southeastern Schools, and Hamilton Town Center joined us in our corner of the world!” Bethlehem United Methodist Church has members from Fishers, Geist, and Lawrence Township. “Our missions over the years have included raising money for a number of local charities,” Johnston says. “For several years we ran an after-school homework help program in a nearby lower-income apartment complex. We support Man 4 Man Ministries, The Good Samaritan Network, The Indiana UM Children’s Home in Lebanon, UMCOR (The United Methodist Committee on Relief), Damar, The Boys and Girls Club Noblesville, and The Thorpe Creek School Library. We’ve also sent supplies to tornado victims, generators to a mission in Central America, and more. Quarterly, we provide lunch at Ronald McDonald House at Riley for families of patients there.” Bethlehem United Methodist Church raises that charity money primarily by having participated in what is now Fishers Spark (started as Fishers Fest), since it began over 10 years ago. “We are the source for the ‘heavenly corndogs,’ there, and most of the congregation serves shifts cooking dogs and selling soft drinks,” Johnston says. “And of course, we have generous congregants, too.” Johnston noted that every church has its ebb and flow of congregational size.
“As children grow and move away from the area, we lose some, so the average age of a congregation tends to rise and fall, (and then rise and fall again) over 175 years,” Johnston says. “While there can be some comfort in being all ‘of an age,’ we know that won’t keep us going. In recent years, we’ve worked on not becoming only a congregation of retirees. “We’ve drawn in younger members, and there are really probably two reasons for that,” Johnston says. “The first is that we have a young, energetic pastor, the Rev. Angela Gafford-Asmus, who keeps us open to new ideas and gives a little shove now and then to move outside the box. The second is that we are well known for being among the friendliest congregations around. We are small enough to recognize a visitor, and almost all of us enjoy welcoming those,
NOVEMBER 2019
urging them to come back. And most do!” Because they are not a megachurch, (and don’t want to be), members can keep things personal. “We have dinners together, either pitch-ins at the church or ‘on the road,’ at an area restaurant, nearly every month of the year,” Johnston says. “Our youth group is small right now, but we keep our kids busy. For example, as part of one of the 175th birthday events, they will participate in giving out 175 free Bibles to all comers on a Saturday afternoon before taking off for a hike and a picnic at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.” Bethlehem United Methodist Church is located at 13550 Olio Road. World War II Veteran’s Memory Lives On Through His Son Writer / Kara Kavensky Photography Provided
Veteran’s Day, or Armistice Day as it was originally named, was declared to honor the 11th hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the end of World War I. Veteran’s Day is a day of gratitude and remembrance of those who have served our country. This Veteran’s Day and every day for that matter, Fishers resident David M. Delafield honors his father, David D. Delafield, who served during World War II. David D. Delafield was born in 1920 and grew up in East Aurora, New York just outside of Buffalo. While away studying
art at Miami of Ohio, his father plunged the family car into a lake. This suicidal episode was mainly due to the impact the Great Depression had upon his jewelry business. He not only drowned himself but his younger daughter and granddaughter. Delafield’s mother and older sister survived. Delafield’s older brother, Will, like himself, was away at the time. Delafield left college to help his family get through this rough time before he transferred to Ohio State University to earn his Bachelors of Fine Art. In 1939, a professor of Delafield’s at Ohio State, Hoyt Sherman, creatively engaged in the war effort by helping the U.S. Navy identify enemy ships and planes through NOVEMBER 2019
drawing classes. Unbeknownst to Delafield, his classes at OSU with Sherman prepared him to be a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator. In January of 1942, Delafield enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. In August of 1943, he was a member of the 727th Squadron of the 451st Bomb Group. The 727th was stationed in Tunisia. Delafield’s new B24H Bomber had a nickname borrowed from Snuffy Smith, the “Bodacious Critter.” Delafield was a crew member of the Bodacious Critter II, as the original Bodacious Critter was shot down by the Germans in late June 1944. Delafield designed and painted the nose art on the plane. The job of the bombardier
Self-Portrait of David D. Delafield
is to accurately target the aerial bombs to their destination. The visual techniques that Delafield learned at OSU enabled him to be one of the most successful at his craft. The Bodacious Critter completed 51 missions over Germany, France, Italy, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. The 52nd mission was thwarted by a crash immediately after take-off. After serving in the war, Delafield returned stateside to complete his degree. His war experiences impacted his priorities and created artwork to reflect the awareness of poverty that he had encountered in Europe. Delafield not only earned his BFA at OSU but also an MA and a PhD. He taught at Washington State University for three years, then he spent most of his career at the University of Northern Iowa. It was in Cedar Falls, Iowa where he met and fell in love with a student named Marianna. Marianna had returned to school at UNI to earn her teaching certificate. A single mom with three young children, Delafield not only married Marianne but adopted her three children. The youngest is David M. Delafield. “It was this act of love and generosity that endeared me to my dad,” David M says. “My dad already had four kids of his own and it was amazing how well the seven of us kids blended.” David M. and his adopted father bonded NOVEMBER 2019
over many things, not the least of which was baseball. They were both Cincinnati Reds fans and David M played baseball through high school, and today is an athletic clothing rep for baseball apparel. Delafield would pass in December of 2003 after battling a decade of Alzheimer’s-related illnesses. While his life was cut short, Delafield leaves behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated. However, the most enduring legacy of Delafield’s is the love that he had for his family. Delafield was many things: a son, an artist, a husband, a father, a grandfather and a hero to all.

FISHERS POLICE DEPARTMENT IMPROVES CRIMEWATCH APP Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided
The Fishers Police Department recently announced its new and improved Fishers CrimeWatch app – Relay, a community engagement and crime prevention app. The app, which has served residents since 2016, is used to report non-emergency crimes. Relay is free to download via the Apple and Google Play stores.
Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart says the The officer can connect back with the Relay app is designed to improve citizen and citizens to ask any questions about the officer safety. report and to let the citizens know when their report has been resolved.” “If you see a suspicious vehicle, erratic driving, have an animal concern or The Relay app improves communications. anything that seems out of place, you can It now includes a streamlined user interface take a picture and submit it through the and improved feedback and updates to app,” Gebhart says. “A nearby officer will residents who submit issues. receive your report immediately, and then they will self-dispatch themselves to solve “Our app is unique because it gives citizens the incident in the most timely manner. a direct way to connect with nearby law NOVEMBER 2019
enforcement,” Gebhart adds. “If citizens give permission, officers can message them to ask any relevant questions and to send updates on when the incident is resolved. Citizens can now receive alerts from local law enforcement to highlight trends in the area so they can feel safer wherever life takes them. The Relay app is available to citizens across the country and will route incidents to the appropriate agencies. The software is integrated with existing police dispatch systems to make it easier for officers to view and respond to reports while in their patrol vehicle.” The Relay app is also easy to use. “When you launch the app, a map pops up and it will show you any incidents that have been submitted near you,” Gebhart says. “So even if you are not planning on submitting incidents, the app is still extremely useful for citizens to stay in-theknow on what is going on in the area that they are in at any given time.” More than 6,000 Fishers residents use the app to report non-emergency crimes to the Fishers Police Department. “Our number one goal is to serve and protect our community, which we believe this does,” Gebhart says. “The app allows citizens to not only submit nonemergency incidents directly to nearby law enforcement, but it also allows citizens to see what type of reports are submitted and where. On top of that, the app has a feature so citizens can receive realtime alerts from local law enforcement. Officers can push notifications to alert their community of threats in their area, locations to avoid from accidents and much more.”
to navigate through. They like being able to self-dispatch themselves so they can solve any incident in the most efficient manner. On top of all of this, officers enjoy having the ability to connect back with the citizens to ask any relevant questions about the incident and to send them updates on the report so they can close the loop with the citizens.”
“By giving citizens the opportunity to take a picture of an incident and directly send it to nearby law enforcement, Relay truly is the future of keeping communities safe,” Gebhart says. “Relay is unique because it allows citizens with communication and accessibility issues to more easily report incidents. It is the only app on the market that has this innovative software.”
Fishers residents have also enjoyed using the app and bridging the connection with local law enforcement.
For more information, follow the Fishers Police Department on Twitter, Facebook and Nextdoor.
Fishers police officers have responded positively to it. “Our officers really enjoy using it,” Gebhart says. “They like it for a variety of reasons. First, they love how citizens can send them a picture of the incident reported to allow them to better prepare for the situation at hand. Second, they like using the app because it is so simple NOVEMBER 2019

The new northside location offers a design unlike other Pizza King locations.
Austin Prather, assistant director of marketing for Pizza King, knows Geist and Fishers residents are excited about the opening of the newest location.
“This location is one of the most modern and unique store designs in our entire company,” Prather says. “We wanted to give the community a dining room as beautiful as the community itself. The store features exposed ductwork, black ceilings and an attached patio for outdoor dining. We also wanted to commemorate how we’ve grown through the years by displaying custom artwork about our history and brand throughout the store.”
The new restaurant officially opened in October. “Our new location is located at 11228 Fall Creek Road, Indianapolis, right next to the 3 Sails Sculpture and Roundabout,” Prather says. “Our ownership group is made up of several families that own and operate 48 Pizza King locations across East Central Indiana. We have locations in cities such as Muncie, Noblesville, Anderson, Richmond and Fort Wayne. There are other Pizza King chains on the western half of the state that aren’t associated with our stores.
Prather adds that there has been a lot of community excitement about the new Pizza King. “We have been blown away by the overwhelmingly positive public response to the news of this new store,” he says. “We’ve NOVEMBER 2019
had numerous residents leave us messages about how they got hooked on Pizza King during their time at Ball State University in Muncie. Many of these graduates have moved to this area now, and they are ecstatic to have a pizza brand they love within such close proximity. We are looking forward to becoming an active member of this community through sponsorships and other forms of community outreach as well.” The menu at the new Pizza King will feature well-known pizzas and other delicious options. “We are best known for our ‘Feast’ specialty pizzas,” Prather says. “Our traditional pizzas come with a thin, crispy crust. We also have a thicker, pan crust option as well. For those that want something other than pizza, we have plenty of other menu options to choose from. We have a wide variety of
submarines, pastas, breadsticks, wrap-ups and salads. Our dill butter brushed ‘bread stix’ are also a fan favorite.” Some of the Pizza King customer favorites will include their Royal Feast pizza, which has been the most popular menu item for decades. “It features a special blend of pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions and red and green peppers atop a crispy crust,” Prather says. “Customers also love our bread stix, which come lightly brushed with dill butter and are served with nacho cheese or your choice of sauce.”
Prather has his own favorites. “I love everything on the menu, but the Royal Feast continues to be my go-to pizza,” he says. Highest Quality Products Prather adds that, “Over the last 60 years, our overarching goal has been to serve the highest quality products with fast, friendly service. Every time a customer decides to ‘Ring the King,’ we want to ensure that they are happy with the food and service they receive. This continues to be our goal as we grow and expand over time.”
Prather and the Pizza King staff are thrilled about being in the Geist and Fishers area. “We just want the community to know how excited we are to be opening a location here,” Prather says. “We want to make sure every customer is taken care of and satisfied when they order from us. With that being said, we have comment cards at pizzaking. com and every table at our store. We encourage everyone to fill one out and let us know if we are meeting their expectations.” Pizza King is located at 11228 Fall Creek Road. SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY EVENT RETURNS NOVEMBER 30 Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photographer / Brian Brosmer
For the sixth year in a row, Fishers will celebrate its version of Small Business Saturday with Shop Fishers. The local celebration is an all-day event on Saturday, November 30. Local shops and restaurants from around the city will have some of their biggest sales of the year, just in time for the holiday shopping season.
“It is our local celebration of Small Business Saturday, which is a nationwide initiative by American Express to celebrate and support small businesses across the country,” says Stephanie Perry, assistant director of public relations for the City of Fishers. “Fishers started its own celebration in 2014 right when it launched, and it’s really grown over the past six years with new businesses coming on board. It used to be more centrally located just around the downtown district, the Nickel Plate District, but we really worked to expand NOVEMBER 2019
it to be city-wide.” Perry is especially proud of how many businesses from across Fishers participated in Shop Fishers. It has had shops participate from Olio Road to the east and Allisonville to the west, embracing all aspects of the city. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season here in Fishers and show support for our local small businesses,” Perry adds.
Shop Fishers will be an all-day celebration but will vary depending on the hours of participating businesses. Shops and their hours will be available to the public once the lineup has been secured.
WE’RE REALLY PROUD OF ALL OF OUR SMALL BUSINESSES HERE IN FISHERS “We’re really proud of all of our small businesses here in Fishers,” Perry says. “Everything from locally-owned restaurants and boutiques, to fitness studios. We have such a variety of businesses here across the city, and so we’re really lucky to have such a mix, especially here in the downtown area of small businesses and larger corporations. It’s a great blend for the city and for our residences.” Compared to last year, there are a few changes to Shop Fishers in 2019. Last year, there was a winter farmers market that started in November and went through March. This year, there will just be a holiday market. “The market might have a little different feel than in the past,” Perry says. In addition to the market, there will also be a handful of new businesses in the downtown area thanks to the addition of Spark Apartments. Some of those businesses include Blush Salon and Roman & Leo. Angela Castelli, owner of Roman & Leo,
Angela Castelli of Roman & Leo will be open in the Spark Apartment building selling her one-of-a-kind boys apparel and gifts.

has been participating in Shop Fishers since its first year in Fishers. “I have participated in it every single year,” Castelli says. “I think 2014 was the first year they did it, and that was the first year that I did it. Someone from the city had reached out and said they were going to be promoting the Shop Fishers and doing a big event. That year is the first year that I opened my store and I wanted to participate and do something with Small Business Saturday. It was awesome that the city was already going to be doing some sort of event that day to help support all the local businesses.” For Castelli, she loves small businesses and Small Business Saturday because of its community feel and how a lot of people in the community come out and support local businesses, some who’ve never shopped local before. Overall, it brings a lot of great exposure to the community and highlights new businesses in the community. I just think shopping small and local, you get more of a personalized experience,” Castelli says. “A lot of the owners physically work in their businesses. There’s a lot of time and effort spent on what they put into their stores, how the shopping experience is for the customers, that personal experience is really important. And you can really see all of the effort that the business owners put in.”

have responded to that. They show their support by coming back to get fresh donuts.”
Travis Roseberry, a former stockbroker, had a dream to start his own business. He thought it was worth the risk to leave his old job, and strike out on his own.
“We are still growing,” Roseberry says. “I see new faces in the shops all the time, and I love it. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Customer favorites include the cake donuts, the fried danishes, custard donuts and the glazed ones.
Roseberry is glad he followed his dream and pursued his passion.
“Our powdered sugar French Cream donuts and Apple Fritters are also popular,” Roseberry says. “We get a lot of customers coming in asking for those all the time.”
His gamble paid off. His business, Krenolies Donuts, has prospered with two locations: Noblesville and recently in Fishers. “Our hand-cut donuts are very popular,” Roseberry says. “I think they have taken off and become a very popular treat for both Fishers and Noblesville residents.”
“I was a stockbroker for 10 years, and I came to realize that I wanted to own my own business and do this,” he says. “I really wanted to be an entrepreneur.” Roseberry has a positive theory why Krenolies Donuts have been such a big hit.
Roseberry opened the Noblesville Krenolies Donuts at 14300 Mundy Drive in 2015, and “We make the donuts fresh daily,” Roseberry the Fishers location at 11513 Allisonville says. “We make our own icing. Roseberry’s personal favorite is the glazed donut. “It’s definitely our number one seller, without a doubt,” he says. “Sometimes I’ll eat one myself when I’m making a lot of them. They are a staple here. I get a lot of nice compliments from the customers telling me they really like them.”

Other delicious donut choices include the cinnamon twists, white iced raspberry jelly, powdered sugar raspberry jelly, Maple bacon, blueberry cake and raspberry danishes. Roseberry noted that his newer location in Fishers has been well received, too. “Fishers is a growing community, and I’m very excited to be a part of it,” Roseberry says. “We get a lot of traffic in here from people driving down Allisonville Road. I like the number of people who say they see us from the road and stop in for some donuts.” Krenolies also makes specialty donuts. “We have a donut of the month, and we rotate the menu, but we still keep the popular staples that people ask for on a regular basis,” Roseberry says. Coffee lovers have also responded favorably to Krenolies’ delicious hot java. “We tried out 30 different blends before we decided on a ‘Breakfast Blend’ by Farmers Brothers,” Roseberry adds. “We grind fresh coffee every day. We have a lot of people who just stop in for the coffee. I love seeing repeat customers. It makes my day.” Krenolies Donuts is located at 14300 Mundy Drive, Suite 500 in Noblesville and 11513 Allisonville Road in Fishers. You can visit them online at krenolies.com.

it’s gratifying seeing favorite successes strut their stuff.
Some say Keira is a liability. Really, she is a purebred Dogue de Bordeaux, a breed name that makes her sound worthy of the fanciest pedigree. But her breeder was an amateur at best and led to Keira’s inability to walk.
The Humane Society pays an average of $225 in medical fees per animal, a number kept low by volunteer veterinarians. Then, it costs around $13 per day that an animal resides in the facility. The average stay is 27 days.
Tinsel & Tails also showcases the HSHC’s program Pets Healing Vets. It pairs war veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder with therapy animals. The program pays for the pets’ expenses for the animals’ lifetime.
Keira was transferred to a rescue in southern Indiana that found itself overwhelmed at Keira’s needs. The staff called the Humane Society For Hamilton County for help, because not just anyone can take on a dog like Keira.
Funding from Hamilton County municipalities provides 20% of the annual budget or around seven days shelter for each animal. The rest is fundraised through the website and various events.
“We try to remove the barrier of cost for the veterans because healing is so important,” Bousley adds. “We see the animals heal as well.”
For individuals and rescues in surrounding cities, the Humane Society For Hamilton County (HSHC) is a beacon for providing homes to animals. HSHC didn’t save Keira because she was purebred. The Humane Society doesn’t care about the dog’s status, only its potential for companionship. “If an animal can be treated, we’re there for
Bousley puts together annual events as well as partnership events. She says it seems like there’s an event every weekend during the warmer months. There’s a 5K race and a concert called Woofstock each fall, a wine tasting in the spring and a gala for the holidays. This year’s Tinsel & Tails gala is Nov. 21. Staff dresses to the nines and lays a runway for pets and their new owners. Bousley says atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2019 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 35
Animals come to the Humane Society from a variety of places. They can be surrendered by their owner, picked up as a stray, rehomed by law enforcement or rescued from cruel conditions. “It’s an emotional job but for most of us, it’s the best job we could ask for,” Bousley says. The staff schedules enrichment, from cuddle time to long walks, for the animals. If the dog or cat needs more help, HSHC
provides training, daycare and foster care.
animals other organizations can’t handle.
Each cat must properly use a litter box, and dogs must pass a temperament test before they are considered ready for adoption. This way, they’re ready for their forever home.
It’s not rare for rescues to turn to HSHC for help, like in Keira’s case. In addition to serving Hamilton County, the Humane Society helps provide homes to pets others deem too difficult.
HSHC is surely ready with programs and lots of love for every animal looking for a home, but the Humane Society itself is looking forward to its next location.
The Humane Society For Hamilton County is located at 1721 Pleasant St. in Noblesville. For more information, visit hamiltonhumane.com or give them a call at 317-773-4974 for more information.
HSHC will move from Noblesville to Fishers once the new facility is built. They are set to start building this spring, but President and CEO Rebecca Stevens says fundraising is ongoing. The new building will be able to hold more than 200 animals. It will have indoor and outdoor kennels for dogs to enjoy and walking paths for dedicated walk times. To cut back on the spread of disease, there will be better isolation for sick animals, too. There’s a space for educating the community planned as well. The Humane Society currently visits elementary schools for awareness but can’t currently have sessions in house. The current space packs a punch, as it manages to serve the whole county. But as more animals fill the kennels, HSHC is eager for room to grow. This way, it can take in a lot more

Make-A-WishÂŽ Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana granted the wish of Kammy Hiner in October 2019. Her wish to give back and provide a swing was a perfect way for her to combine many of the things she loves: playgrounds, swings, and watching kids smile and have fun together! Kammy and her family hope that the equipment brings joy to many children and their families for many years to come and will spark a passion for there to be more inclusive playgrounds throughout our communities.
