TEXAS ROADHOUSE
Texas Roadhouse has been a part of Fishers for 20 years now. When the popular restaurant first opened along State Road 37 nearly 20 years ago, the surroundings were much different.
“We have remained true to what we were in 1993,” he says. “There are definitely changes we have had to make. Curbside pickup has been big. Carryout is probably two to three times more of our sales now.”
“We were on an island,” says Managing Partner Dan Keilman. “There was nothing else around. You could see all the way up to Noblesville if you wanted to. This area has really grown.”
Keilman says their location off State Road 37 has been better than they could have expected when they first chose the spot 20 years ago. Even with the recent construction on 37, Texas Roadhouse has remained busy.
When Keilman first started with Texas Roadhouse there were only about 13 locations, today there are more than 650 locations across the U.S. He says it was the food that drew him to the business.
“We knew this area was going to be growing,” Keilman says. “We are fortunate to have been here and are established, so people know where we are and still find us. ED MARTIN NISSAN
The Ed Martin Automotive Group has been a staple in Indiana since the company began in 1955. Mark Harrison has been a part of the company since 1976. Today, he serves as President of the Ed Martin Automotive Group, running the popular automotive business with his wife Kathy Martin Harrison. “The summer of 1976, after I got home from college, Ed asked me what I was doing for the summer,” Harrison says. “He said, ‘Why don’t you come work for me?’ So, I did and by 1978 I was working there full time. That first summer it was washing cars, cleaning the lots, helping with whatever he asked me to do.” Today, the company has grown to nine locations and 12 franchises across Anderson, Noblesville, Fishers, Carmel and Indianapolis. When COVID-19 hit the country, Harrison, like any other business owner, wondered how it would affect his industry. So far, business
has continued fairly smoothly. “There was a lot of talk with COVID that no one was going to want to go to car dealerships,” Harrison says. “We have not found that to be true. Nothing has really changed. The price of cars has escalated with the new technology and safety features. So, leasing has become more prevalent.” Ed Martin Nissan, being located along State Road 37, has seen the changes throughout the construction on the 37 Thrives project. “We haven’t been impacted very much yet,” he says. “We will go through some heartburn as the construction moves further north. But it is definitely going to help thoroughfare and congestion.” Ed Martin Nissan is located at 13397 Britton Park Rd. in Fishers. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY RESTORE IS LEAVING A LASTING IMPACT IN HAMILTON COUNTY Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
The Habitat for Humanity Restore, located at 7998 Centerpoint Drive, is a win-win situation for Hamilton County residents. Not only does the home improvement thrift store sell donated and gently used merchandise at a significant discount to the general public, it benefits Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity. Funds raised make it possible for families in need to own an affordable home. “The benefits of this model abound: through donated product, the ReStore reduces waste and helps tons of material avoid the landfill each year. The quality home goods are typically 50-75% below retail, making home improvement possible for many who could not otherwise afford it,”
says Abri Hochstetler, Associate Director of Communications and Annual Giving. “The stores provide local jobs, and the ReStore can pick up your large or bulk donations from your home or business, making donating a breeze.”
to their home. This could be as big as a set of cabinets or as small as a set of screws. Contractors and landlords visit looking for tools and building materials. Because the ReStore is filled with new and used donated products, every visit is a new adventure.
Donations to the store are tax-deductible and make up the store’s inventory. Items for sale range in variety from outdoor garden tools to chandeliers. It’s a place where both practical and off-beat objects become gems for people who enjoy repurposing materials or do it yourself projects. There is no doubt that customers can find some unusual items.
“Donated product comes from all types of places. If you’re completing a kitchen remodel or replacing your washer and dryer, the ReStore can come to your home to pick up the usable items: cabinets, stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer, etc. Or, if you’re cleaning out your garage or home and discover items that have more life, you can donate those home goods as well.”
“We often get unique art such as paintings or posters,” Hochstetler says. “The most interesting thing I’ve seen was a red, heartshaped hot tub. Many times, customers are looking for an affordable fix or improvement 8 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atFishers.com
Both full and part-time employees work at the store as drivers, cashiers and donation processors. Regular volunteers are gladly accepted. Additionally, commercial
partnerships are welcome and regular pick-ups can be set-up at businesses, churches, company warehouses or other places of work. The merchandise sold at the restore enables Habitat for Humanity to provide low-income, first-time homebuyers with the life-changing opportunity of homeownership. Neighborhoods and the communities benefit as well by providing places to live that are well built. “In a time when home has taken on even more meaning and importance, we are grateful that the ReStore provides a connection between usable home goods and those who need them, all while helping Habitat build safe, stable, and affordable homes for our neighbors who need them,” Hochstetler says. Habitat for Humanity Restore is located at 7998 Centerpoint Drive in Fishers. To donate, visit IndyRestore.com/Pick-up or call 317896-9423. They also have a new location, West Washington ReStore, at 4129 West Washington Street in Indianapolis.

STATE OF PLAY ROOTS’ SCHOOL OF THEATRE WELCOMES ALL AGES Writer / Trisha Turner Photography Provided
Even as high school sweethearts at Lawrence Central in Indianapolis, Brad and Mindy Root knew they wanted to pursue acting. They did so together, studying the craft at Ball State University and then heading to New York City to work toward their dream. But along the way, they developed another goal together. One day, they decided, they would focus their work on teaching children about theater. That one day came sooner than expected. The couple now owns a theater school for children. Roots’ School of Theatre draws nearly 150 students from Fishers and surrounding areas to learn everything from acting to improv to piano.
“We’ve been really blessed to have the Fishers community to work in,” Mindy says. “Everyone is really supportive.” After graduating from Ball State - Mindy in 2012 and Brad in 2013 - the Roots began careers in New York. They came back to Indianapolis each summer to lead an acting class at Mud Creek Theater, which inspired them to expand their focus on teaching theater to children - a plan they thought they’d pursue well into the future. The couple returned to Indiana in 2016, when Mindy began her master’s degree work. Then a mutual friend introduced them to Michele Shetter, who was looking for someone to buy Michele’s Studio Theater House. With their passion for teaching theater to children in mind, the Roots took the plunge and bought the studio. “It seemed like the right move,” Brad says. 10 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2020 / atFishers.com
“We didn’t think an opportunity like this would come up again.” Roots’ School of Theatre opened in August 2017 near 116th and Lantern Road in Fishers, where Shetter’s business had been. The couple liked the small studio but thought they might eventually outgrow the space. They needed a larger facility within one year and moved to their current
location between 126th and 131st streets near Texas Roadhouse in 2018. Children from kindergarten through grade 12 attend Roots’ School of Theatre to perform in musical and non-musical plays, learn improv and write sketches, take part in a summer camp, and receive private lessons in voice, piano and auditioning. Led by six instructors including the Roots, students rehearse and present shows for family and friends in the school’s 80-seat theater. Past productions include “Mary Poppins” and “101 Dalmatians” (Mindy’s favorites), as well as “Into the Woods Jr.” and “Peter Pan” (Brad’s favorites). Regardless of the given program, the Roots say there’s one aspect of the school’s training that stands apart - its inclusive approach. Sure, Roots’ School of Theatre fueled its rapid growth in part with students who originally attended Shetter’s studio. The couple also credits Mud Creek Theater with lending a hand in getting out the word about the Roots’ school. The couple believes their insistence that each student be accepted to perform has also been important to the school’s growth. “Theater shouldn’t just be for the kids who know somebody, or are seen as talented or worthy,” Brad says. Students audition for parts after they enroll. The school places all students in roles that are intensive and might require atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 11

everything from scene changes to solo performances. Roots’ School of Theatre keeps cast numbers low for each production, to give every student an opportunity for significant roles and individualized instruction. “This is about fostering a love of theater,” Mindy says.
HAVE YOU GAINED WEIGHT? HAS EATING RIGHT GONE WRONG? WE GET IT!
The couple understands that not every child is Broadway-bound and not every child wants to be. They believe that what students learn at theater school will pay dividends in a range of settings from the classroom to the boardroom. Children who attend can gain confidence and foster skills in teamwork, empathy and public speaking. Improv students, in particular, become adept at thinking on their feet. “I love when I hear a parent say, ‘Their teacher says they speak up more in class and have more confidence in their voice,’” Mindy says. The school’s popularity has led to awards from Hulafrog, a national network of websites for parents.

Over the course of his life, Scott Burton has enjoyed several careers. He began as an attorney before transitioning to commercial real estate investment. Next, he opened a business that ran youth sports leagues and tournaments. When he retired seven years ago, only a few weeks had passed before his wife Laura lovingly told him, “You need to find something to do. You’re driving me crazy.” After contemplating what might be a good fit, the couple thought about how much they enjoyed wine tasting trips to Napa, California. “We wanted to do something fun and different,” Scott Burton says. “We thought, ‘Why not create the Napa experience back here at home?’” When they first mentioned the idea to friends, they were met with skepticism.
“A lot of people thought we were crazy, but we kind of swam upstream with the idea,” Burton recalls.
says. “That area of Fishers is so unique, full of restaurants and entertainment destinations.”
In 2015 the Burtons opened Peace Water Winery in Carmel, Indiana’s only locallyowned California winery - meaning the owners handcraft wines in Napa Valley and bring them to Indiana. They followed up on that venture by opening another location in downtown Indianapolis in 2017. Around that time a property developer approached them to ask if they would be interested in some real estate in Fishers District. The Burtons didn’t want to bite off more than they could chew so they passed at the time. They revisited the idea this year and were thrilled that there was space available.
Earlier this year the pair had been plugging along in the building process when the governor issued the lockdown order, forcing Burton to do the majority of the construction himself in order to get it done on time. Though some people may have been scared of committing to a new business venture during a pandemic, the Burtons weren’t fazed.
“It’s a perfect fit for what we do,” Burton NOVEMBER 2020
“We were committed to this,” Burton says. “Someday this pandemic will go away and we’ll get back to normal.” In the meantime, the owners are happy to see people with masks social distancing.
They held a soft opening in late June and have been pleased by turnouts. They draw people in with live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as partnerships with several local establishments including the HC Tavern + Kitchen, 1933 Lounge and Sangiovese Ristorante. The couple is devoted to giving back to the community, and they created a Giving Wall that highlights eight local and global charities, each selected by one of their eight grown children. They donate 50% of proceeds to these charities. When a customer buys a bottle of wine they receive a token, which they deposit next to the nonprofit of their choice. The owners purposefully designed the Giving Wall to be an interactive experience so customers can feel good about giving. Burton says many organizations do great things for charities but it’s often behind the scenes. Here, the giving is front and center. “The idea is that hopefully the giving will have a lasting effect,” he says. “If they do it at Peace Water Winery, maybe they’ll do it somewhere else down the road.” Employees at Peace Water Winery don’t accept tips, so any tips customers wish to give are also passed on to charities. In addition, since the Burtons want to help as many nonprofits as possible, they regularly host fundraisers and donate 10% of each night’s sales to a particular nonprofit. The Burtons created a monthly wine club called the Peace Posse, which has grown to 1,500 members. For a monthly fee, members get one or two bottles of wine each month. When members pick up their bottles, they can enjoy a free glass of wine or free wine tasting. In addition, when a winemaker from Napa comes to town, they do meet-and-greet nights as well as special dinners with the club. Some of the owners’ favorite gatherings center around community service. “Laura often volunteers at the soup kitchen downtown,” Burton says. NOVEMBER 2020
“Sometimes when there’s nobody to staff it, we’ll put calls out to our Peace Posse and they get to participate in those give-back opportunities.” Burton says Laura is always doing things for other people.
With a successful business, eight children, two grandchildren (and three more on the way), as well as three dogs, three horses, two cats and a cow, the couple doesn’t have a ton of free time. They often spend it practicing yoga and going to the Bridgewater Club. Mostly, they’re simply happy making people happy.
“Her philosophy on life is, ‘We’re all in this together. Let’s help each other out,’” he says.
“We didn’t open the winery with any grand ideas to become some huge, mass-

SHOP FISHERS POPULAR EVENT RETURNS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES DURING TRYING TIMES Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Kerch Creative
The City of Fishers will once again host Shop Fishers on Saturday, Nov. 28 to highlight local businesses. “Everyone knows Black Friday,” says Stephanie Perry, Assistant Director of Public Relations for the City of Fishers. “This event is a great way to get many of the same deals, but here at the local level.”
The initiative will offer discounts and promotions from more than 50 different local businesses and restaurants to promote shopping locally. “Our community has been great about supporting local businesses either through curbside pickup, carry out or online ordering,” Perry says. “I think this year it’s especially important to come together and support our local community. These business owners are our neighbors, NOVEMBER 2020
our friends and residents here in our community as well. This event is about showing them some extra support this year and shopping local as much as possible during the holiday season.” Many businesses participate year after year. Four Day Ray Brewing will offer a 15% discount on items purchased online. “This is a great way to support the local community,” says Brooke Killey, Marketing
& Events Director at Four Day Ray Brewing. “It’s a great way to not only push traffic to our business but other local businesses near us.”

“It’s our brown ale with cinnamon and nutmeg,” Killey says. “It has hints of malty sweetness, nuts, honey and biscuit. It’s like a warm hug in a glass. It’s a fan favorite we bring back each year.”
“The Fisher’s community is so entrepreneurial,” says Brooke Wyatt, CEO of Rosie Boutique. “I’m one of the younger participants so it’s very cool for me as a CEO and as an entrepreneur to look up to other business owners in the area. I’m a huge fan of the other boutiques and local businesses here. It’s an honor for me to be in the entrepreneur community and helping other people with this the support shop small.”

Wispy Pine will offer shoppers $10 off every $50 spent in-store. “One of the wonderful things about this
community is there are so many small, local places to eat and shop,” Griffith says. “The fact that Fishers wants to showcase those places for the community is really special. Unplug Soy Candles will participate for the first time this year and will offer 20% off November 25-30. Exclusions apply. Additionally, during Shop Fishers, shoppers will receive a free Gold Tin candle with every $50 spent. “We sell candles that not only smell great but are also home decor pieces,” says Jessica Matson, Sales and Marketing Manager at Unplug Soy Candles.

10 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR HOSTING THANKSGIVING Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Can you smell the turkey and stuffing already? Thanksgiving dinners are not something that happens without preparation and strategy. If the day doesn’t flow just right, you could be in for disaster. But here are a few helpful tips for hosting your big dinner with ease of execution.
1. BAKE DESSERTS EARLY
Or buy them pre-made. Honestly, this is one thing that you don’t NEED to worry about if you don’t want to. If there’s that one pie that you make every year, then make it, but make it early. Make it a day (or two) before and it will still taste just as good, if not better!
2. SET THE TABLE PRIOR
If you can, set the table at least the day before, do it. Gather your florals, your plates, your flatware and arrange them how you like. Not only will you be able to enjoy the table setting for a day or two longer, you will have taken one more thing off your plate for the big day and given yourself more time!
3. WRITE OUT A SCHEDULE
The key to hosting Thanksgiving like a boss is execution. So the best way to execute
flawlessly is to know how you want the day to go down. Write out a schedule showing the order you’ll be putting things in the oven and include how long and what temperature. Leave spaces in between where you can add in what you’ll be doing on the stove during those cooking times. A schedule will really help the day go much smoother and prevent forgetting things.
4. EMPTY EVERYTHING
Trashes, Dishwasher, Fridge. Lots of things are going to be happening in the kitchen and you don’t want to have the extra stress of needing to unload the dishwasher and shove things in the fridge when you should be checking the turkey. Remember, there will be LOTS of dirty dishes and LOTS of leftovers so make sure there is room for both before you even start the day. This is a perfect task to do the night before.
5. MAKE BREAKFAST EASY
This will give you a nice, quiet time before the other guests arrive.
6. DON’T DENY HELP
It can be hard to open up your kitchen and allow others in, especially when you have a plan or idea of how everything is going to go. But if you’ve written it all down, don’t deny someone asking to help. Take all the help you can get! This might even allow you to sneak in a shower which you probably haven’t taken yet. With the morning schedule being written out, others can see your plan and can help without hindering. If you don’t have it all written out, make sure when you accept the help from others that you give specific tasks so no one is feeling in the way.
7. DON’T FRET OVER THE APPETIZERS
Look, there’s going to be a lot of food, so don’t fret the small stuff. Appetizers can be kept to easy charcuterie boards, fruits and veggies. If you are famous for certain appetizers, feel free to still make them, but try to make them ahead of time so all you have to worry about on the big day is setting them out.
With all the food that’s going to be available in just a few short hours, don’t worry too much about preparing breakfast for everyone. Grab store bought muffins, donuts, or cinnamon rolls to set out early in the morning that the kids and husband can grab as they like. Or, if you have houseguests 8. If you don’t NOVEMBER 2020
want to have a full self-serve bar, pre-mix a seasonal drink for everyone to enjoy. Maybe keep the alcohol to the side so your guests can add if they choose. Grab juice boxes for the kids so you don’t have spills all over the place too!
9. PLAN FOR EARLY ARRIVALS
No matter what time you set the start of dinner, people will arrive earlier than you expect. Make sure you are ready. Have football on in one room and Thanksgiving parades in another. This is also where premade appetizers are perfect! Just pull them out as the doorbell rings and you are sure to be on the top hostess list.
10. EXPRESS YOUR GRATEFULNESS
No matter how you spend your day, be sure to share how grateful you are for the amazing gifts you are all sharing. Whether everyone writes something down or you go around the table and share what you are grateful for out loud, make sure you do this. It’s always great to come together and share the good things we are blessed to have. Whether it is your first time hosting or you are a seasoned pro, with all these tips, you are sure to be the hostess with the most-ess and sparkle throughout the day! Just remember not to sweat the small stuff and enjoy the little things, after all, we are celebrating all the things we are thankful for and there’s no reason to stress if something doesn’t go just the way you planned. Give yourself grace and you are sure to have the best Thanksgiving yet.

NEW LOCAL GROUP GIVES OPPORTUNITIES TO THOSE WITH DISABILITIES Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Kelli White
Fishers recently welcomed a new organization that adds to the city’s ongoing efforts to make the city accessible and inclusive for all residents. Thrive Social Club offers adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) the opportunity to connect with their peers through activities and events sponsored by the city. The idea for the club was set into motion by Mari Kennedy, who has a son with IDD and is a member of the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability (FACD).
With the exception of highly structured entities such as the Special Olympics or integrated employment, adults with IDD have few opportunities for social interaction with anyone outside their family. Thrive Social Club seeks to fill that void. The goal is to facilitate positive interactions and the chance to develop friendships within the support of the club. “Since my son Ryan has Down syndrome, the idea of something like this has been mulling around in my mind for years,” Kennedy says. “I feel there is a post-high school ‘cliff ’ where after leaving school, NOVEMBER 2020
there is little opportunity to find a social group. I always knew something like this was needed. “At first I considered starting the club through my church, but then I discussed the idea with Cecilia Coble, Fishers city councilor and chairman of FACD. She said, ‘Why don’t we make it a city club under the umbrella of FACD?’ The club was launched in the last few months from there,” Kennedy says. Thrive Social Club is guided by an advisory board consisting of members with a strong interest in the club’s mission. Joining

“Although the club membership is for those 18 and older, we envision the club to be focused on individuals with IDD in their 20s and 30s,” Kennedy adds. “Of course, we will follow COVID guidelines and follow social distancing procedures. Thrive Fishers provides an available and welcoming opportunity for people of all abilities to have social interaction while participating in activities connected to our city.” For more information, visit facebook.com/Thrive.FishersIN, and email ThriveFishers@gmail.com.

UNPLUG SOY CANDLES MOVES TO NEW FISHERS LOCATION Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Jennifer Sturgill has always adored interior design and décor. She has also loved candles. “I think there’s something special when you go into someone’s home and they have candles burning,” Sturgill says. “It creates such a warm, cozy environment.” In 2015, Jennifer began making soy candles in her home. After perfecting the candle making process, she started selling her hand-poured 100% pure soy wax candles at the Noblesville Farmers Market, which
enabled her to gauge customer likes and dislikes. If she found there was a fragrance that flopped, she discontinued it. At the same time, if people repeatedly requested a scent, as they did with Hazelnut Coffee, Sturgill responded accordingly. Sturgill also started selling her products via Etsy and at local boutiques. Before long, her business really started booming, prompting her husband Joe to come on board full-time. “It went from making candles in our kitchen, down to the basement bar, then up to the guest bedroom, our 3-car garage, all our spare bedrooms. After a year and a half, atFishers.com / NOVEMBER 2020 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / 29
candles took over our entire house,” Sturgill says. “That’s when we decided it was time to open up our own shop and manufacturing facility in Fortville.” Though they remained in that location for three years, they quickly outgrew the space. When a location became available in Fishers earlier this year, the husband and wife duo felt fate intervening as a lot of their customers live in Fishers, Carmel, Westfield and Zionsville. Being centrally located was a huge plus, not to mention the extra square footage. The new location has three times the manufacturing capacity and twice the retail space as the previous shop.
They made the big move to Fishers this July, smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. When COVID-19 hit, Jennifer and Joe did what every other business owner around the country did — they pivoted. “We decided we needed to pivot and put the majority of our eggs into our online presence during the shut-down,” Sturgill says. “Since we had a workshop room full of vessels, we started offering limited edition vessels to our online community with the option for discounted shipping prices or curbside pickup. Customers absolutely loved it and would come back to shop with us online each week to snatch the unique vessels up!” Long-time customer Dianna Kennedy has always been impressed with the owners’ passion and commitment to their products and customers. “Jennifer and Joe are so friendly that when you walk in the door as a first-timer, you walk out feeling like an old friend,” Kennedy says. Unplug Soy Candles are made of the most environmentally-friendly wax possible, hand-poured in small batches, and use only premium natural fragrance oils with leadfree cotton wicks. “Pure soy wax candles burn about 60% longer than a candle with paraffin in it so you get a nice long burn,” Sturgill adds. “The lead-free cotton wicks mean you’re not burning lead into the air. Plus, we highly fragrance our candles so they smell great when they are not lit but even stronger when you light them.” They sell a total of 19 scents, including holiday fragrances like Balsam & Cedar, which is available year-round due to its popularity. Hazelnut Coffee is hugely popular, as is Sugared Citrus. Sturgill introduces one or two new fragrances a year and will occasionally retire a fragrance to keep things fresh. They now sell in more than 400 stores nationwide, as well as Canada. Though wholesale is their bread-and-butter, the retail, candle workshops, and the online side of the business have substantially grown these last

Customers are thrilled about the company’s move to Fishers. “The new store is top-notch,” Kennedy says. “I feel like a kid in a candy store, pursuing the huge wall of vessels for pouring my own candles.” Sturgill feels very grateful to be where she is today. “If you had told me six or seven years ago that I was going to start and own a successful candle company in five years, I would have laughed,” Sturgill says. “But if you work hard, have a great product and treat people with kindness, that’s how a small business grows.” Open Monday through Saturday, Unplug Soy Candles is located at 12550 Promise Creek Lane, Suite 108 in Fishers. GREAT STRIDES FIREFIGHTER BRANDON ANDERSON IS HELPING OTHER AMPUTEES AROUND THE WORLD ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY
ince suffering an injury in 2016 that resulted in the amputation of his right leg above the knee, Brandon Anderson has not only returned to full-time work with the Fishers Fire Department, but he’s also helped other individuals throughout the country and the world who have suffered similar injuries and became determined not to let those injuries prevent them from continuing their careers. After Anderson, who has now been with the department for nearly 20 years, received some press for his achievement in returning to work after his injury, he found himself connecting with others around the world in similar situations. “I don’t always have the right answer for everybody, but I can share what I went through and how I got to where I am today,” says Anderson, who returned to work in June of 2017 with a nine-pound prosthetic leg after 10 months of therapy. “I’m happy to share any resources — whether it’s how my leg was built and how we worked on that or the workouts that I did to prepare myself to be able to do my job today.” Anderson connected with Michael Laughlin, a Canada-based firefighter, three years ago when Anderson was still working hard and looking eagerly forward to the day when he’d be on the clock again with the Fishers Fire Department.
“I was actually trying to find somebody who had been in my situation, and thought he had made it back to work — when I contacted him he hadn’t quite made it back yet,” says Anderson, who has been promoted to captain since returning to the department as a lieutenant in 2017. “As I pushed through and made it back to doing my job full time, he ran into some hiccups and I was able to share some things with him.” During Anderson’s correspondence with Laughlin, he and his wife decided to meet
up with Laughlin in person, and Anderson says the face-to-face connection benefitted both men. “We really helped each other out after we were able to meet up,” Anderson says. “With all the connections I’ve made, it’s never only been about me helping them. It’s been about sharing with each other and taking pieces to learn myself. If I’m struggling, myself, with a technique or something like that, just talking to someone else might bring up something that they do a little differently, and ultimately makes me rethink how I do it.” Laughlin has since made the jump back into full-duty work in his firefighting job and, according to Anderson, he became the first Canadian firefighter to work as an abovethe-knee amputee in the process. This spring, a firefighter based in Sweden named Christian, who had suffered a motorcycle injury that resulted in the amputation of his leg, reached out to Anderson to learn about his journey, during Christian’s own attempt to get back to work. “Christian’s wife had become aware of my story of trying to come back and making it back to work and was looking for someone like him,” Anderson says. “She reached out to the department to get in contact with

me. He and I have spoken several times now, and FaceTimed back and forth, like I’ve done for other folks around here.” Anderson received word in late July that Christian’s efforts to resume his career as a firefighter have paid off. “He sent me a text saying that he’s able to do a little bit of his job again,” Anderson says. “He’s working at about 50% capacity and doing some training with his other guys. He still has some hiccups that I’m trying to help him work through, but that was great to hear.”
Have a Honey Baked Holiday!
Anderson adds that the Amputee Walking School, a nationwide organization run by Paralympic gold medalists Dennis Oehler and Todd Schaffhauser, provides free physical therapy sessions for any amputee who wishes to attend, and helped him during his own road to recovery and resumption of full-time firefighting work. “For me, the Walking School was a huge help,” he says. “It also provides continuing education credits for therapists, so if you’re a physical therapist you can work in conjunction with them and also provide help for any amputee who needs it.” Anderson says he’s willing to help any additional individuals who are in the situation he found himself in four years ago. He’s not entertained the idea of creating an official nonprofit organization or foundation but says he’ll always take the time to share his story and lessons learned with anyone who might be able to benefit. “It’s not something that I’m actively promoting or anything like that, but I made the decision along with my family that this was something for us to share,” he says. “If it helps one other person along the way, it’s worth sharing what we’ve been through and what I’ve been through to get where I’m at today. After all, you can’t get through something like this alone.”

Francis and Lori Wong’s passion for Korean food and fresh dishes led them to open Tiger Lily 2 in Fishers. Francis says his love for delicious cultural cuisine began when he was a child. “Growing up in Hong Kong, my mother always prepared fresh, local ingredients, and exposed us to eating out with all sorts of cultural dishes,” Wong says. “When I was between the ages of eight to ten, my palate had grown tremendously. Later, when I met my wife Lori, who is Korean, she would always make Korean-style soups and dishes.” In the early 1980s, Wong entered the United States and began his career in the restaurant industry. “I started from the bottom, with not much in hand to build a dream,” he says. “I started at Dunkin’ Donuts in Indianapolis as a dish
washer, and then moved from various jobs to other jobs. I took every job with pride, and worked my way up by having good people skills and good connections.” Wong’s first restaurant was Tiger Lily, which he opened in 2010 at 86th Street and Michigan Road in Indianapolis. The Wongs decided to set their sights on Fishers for Tiger Lily 2, and both are glad they made the decision. “Fishers is such a supportive neighborhood and has such a great atmosphere,” Wong says.

We have a sanitation station for guests to use, and ensure all carry-outs are handled with care and safety. We also offer delivery services through DoorDash.”

Wong has enjoyed working in the restaurant industry, and has learned a lot through the years. “I am originally from Hong Kong, and Lori is from Seoul, South Korea,” Wong says. “Together we used to manage a restaurant overseas, but since moving to the United States, we have both been fine-dining servers, serving steaks, sushi and seafood. We worked at St. Elmo and Mikado.” Wong is grateful to Fishers residents for their continued business. “We are excited to serve authentic Pan-Asian delicacies, and get to know people in our neighborhood,” he says. Tiger Lily 2 is located at 7262 Fishers Crossing Drive in Fishers. For more information, call 317-516-1914 and visit facebook.com/ tigerlily2restaurant.
